अभिषिक्ते तु सुग्रीवे प्रविष्टे वानरे गुहाम् ।

1. But after Sugrīva, the monkey king, was consecrated and had entered his cave, Rāma, accompanied by his brother, came to Mount Prasravaṇa.
शार्दूलमृगसंघुष्टं सिंहैर्भीमरवैर्वृतम् ।
नानागुल्मलतागूढं बहुपादपसंकुलम् ॥२॥
2. śārdūlamṛgasaṃghuṣṭaṃ siṃhairbhīmaravairvṛtam ,
nānāgulmalatāgūḍhaṃ bahupādapasaṃkulam.

2. [The mountain was] resounding with tigers and deer, filled with lions whose roars were terrifying, concealed by various shrubs and creepers, and densely packed with many trees.
ऋक्षवानरगोपुच्छैर्मार्जारैश्च निषेवितम् ।
मेघराशिनिभं शैलं नित्यं शुचिजलाश्रयम् ॥३॥
3. ṛkṣavānaragopucchairmārjāraiśca niṣevitam ,
megharāśinibhaṃ śailaṃ nityaṃ śucijalāśrayam.

3. It was frequented by bears, monkeys, and baboons, as well as by cats; a mountain resembling a mass of clouds, which always offered shelter with its pure water sources.
तस्य शैलस्य शिखरे महतीमायतां गुहाम् ।
प्रत्यगृह्णत वासार्थं रामः सौमित्रिणा सह ॥४॥
4. tasya śailasya śikhare mahatīmāyatāṃ guhām ,
pratyagṛhṇata vāsārthaṃ rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha.

4. On the peak of that mountain, Rama, accompanied by Lakshmana (saumitri), accepted a large and spacious cave as their abode.
अवसत्तत्र धर्मात्मा राघवः सहलक्ष्मणः ।
बहुदृश्यदरीकुञ्जे तस्मिन्प्रस्रवणे गिरौ ॥५॥
5. avasattatra dharmātmā rāghavaḥ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ ,
bahudṛśyadarīkuñje tasminprasravaṇe girau.

bahudṛśyadarīkuñje tasmin prasravaṇe girau

5. There, the righteous (dharma-ātman) Rama (rāghava), accompanied by Lakshmana, dwelt on that mountain abundant with springs and featuring many picturesque caves and bowers.
सुसुखे ऽपि बहुद्रव्ये तस्मिन् हि धरणीधरे ।
वसतस्तस्य रामस्य रतिरल्पापि नाभवत् ।
हृतां हि भार्यां स्मरतः प्राणेभ्यो ऽपि गरीयसीम् ॥६॥
6. susukhe'pi bahudravye tasmin hi dharaṇīdhare ,
vasatastasya rāmasya ratiralpāpi nābhavat ,
hṛtāṃ hi bhāryāṃ smarataḥ prāṇebhyo'pi garīyasīm.
6. su-sukhe api bahu-dravye tasmin hi
dharaṇī-dhare vasataḥ tasya rāmasya
ratiḥ alpā api na abhavat hṛtām hi
bhāryām smarataḥ prāṇebhyaḥ api garīyasīm
6. hi tasmin su-sukhe bahu-dravye
dharaṇī-dhare api vasataḥ tasya rāmasya
alpā ratiḥ api na abhavat hi prāṇebhyaḥ

6. Even on that very pleasant mountain, abundant with many resources, Rama, dwelling there, felt no joy at all. He was constantly remembering his abducted wife, who was dearer to him even than his own life.
उदयाभ्युदितं दृष्ट्वा शशाङ्कं च विशेषतः ।
आविवेश न तं निद्रा निशासु शयनं गतम् ॥७॥
7. udayābhyuditaṃ dṛṣṭvā śaśāṅkaṃ ca viśeṣataḥ ,
āviveśa na taṃ nidrā niśāsu śayanaṃ gatam.
7. udaya-abhyuditam dṛṣṭvā śaśāṅkam ca viśeṣataḥ
āviveśa na tam nidrā niśāsu śayanam gatam
7. niśāsu śayanam gatam tam nidrā na āviveśa
viśeṣataḥ ca udaya-abhyuditam śaśāṅkam dṛṣṭvā
7. When Rama had gone to bed at night, sleep did not come to him, especially after he saw the moon risen in the sky.
तत् समुत्थेन शोकेन बाष्पोपहतचेतसं ।
तं शोचमानं काकुत्स्थं नित्यं शोकपरायणम् ।
तुल्यदुःखो ऽब्रवीद्भ्राता लक्ष्मणो ऽनुनयन् वचः ॥८॥
8. tat samutthena śokena bāṣpopahatacetasaṃ ,
taṃ śocamānaṃ kākutsthaṃ nityaṃ śokaparāyaṇam ,
tulyaduḥkho'bravīdbhrātā lakṣmaṇo'nunayan vacaḥ.
8. tat sam-utthena śokena bāṣpa-upahata-cetasam
tam śocamānam kākutstham
nityam śoka-parāyaṇam tulya-duḥkhaḥ
abravīt bhrātā lakṣmaṇaḥ anunayan vacaḥ
8. tulyaduḥkhaḥ bhrātā lakṣmaṇaḥ tat
sam-utthena śokena bāṣpa-upahata-cetasam
nityam śoka-parāyaṇam śocamānam
tam kākutstham anunayan vacaḥ abravīt
8. Then, with the sorrow that had arisen from that, his mind overwhelmed by tears, his brother Lakshmana, who shared his grief, spoke words of conciliation to Rama (Kākutstha), who was constantly immersed in lamentation.
अलं वीर व्यथां गत्वा न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि ।
शोचतो ह्यवसीदन्ति सर्वार्था विदितं हि ते ॥९॥
9. alaṃ vīra vyathāṃ gatvā na tvaṃ śocitumarhasi ,
śocato hyavasīdanti sarvārthā viditaṃ hi te.
9. alam vīra vyathām gatvā na tvam śocitum arhasi
śocataḥ hi avasīdanti sarva-arthāḥ viditam hi te
9. vīra alam vyathām gatvā tvam śocitum na arhasi
hi śocataḥ sarva-arthāḥ avasīdanti hi te viditam
9. "Enough, O hero! Do not yield to despair; you ought not to grieve. Indeed, all endeavors fail for one who grieves, and this is certainly known to you."
भवान् क्रियापरो लोके भवान्देवपरायणः ।
आस्तिको धर्मशीलश्च व्यवसायी च राघव ॥१०॥
10. bhavān kriyāparo loke bhavāndevaparāyaṇaḥ ,
āstiko dharmaśīlaśca vyavasāyī ca rāghava.
10. bhavān kriyāparaḥ loke bhavān devaparāyaṇaḥ
āstikaḥ dharmaśīlaḥ ca vyavasāyī ca rāghava
10. rāghava bhavān loke kriyāparaḥ devaparāyaṇaḥ
ca āstikaḥ ca dharmaśīlaḥ ca vyavasāyī
10. O Rāghava, you are active in the world, devoted to the deities, a believer, virtuous (dharma-śīla), and resolute.
न ह्यव्यवसितः शत्रुं राक्षसं तं विशेषतः ।
समर्थस्त्वं रणे हन्तुं विक्रमैर्जिह्मकारिणम् ॥११॥
11. na hyavyavasitaḥ śatruṃ rākṣasaṃ taṃ viśeṣataḥ ,
samarthastvaṃ raṇe hantuṃ vikramairjihmakāriṇam.
11. na hi avyavasitaḥ śatrum rākṣasam tam viśeṣataḥ
samarthaḥ tvam raṇe hantum vikramaiḥ jihmakāriṇam
11. hi na avyavasitaḥ samarthaḥ hantum śatrum tam rākṣasam
jihmakāriṇam viśeṣataḥ raṇe vikramaiḥ tvam samarthaḥ
11. For an irresolute person is surely not capable of killing that demon enemy, especially that deceitful one, in battle with (his) valor. You are capable.
समुन्मूलय शोकं त्वं व्यवसायं स्थिरं कुरु ।
ततः सपरिवारं तं निर्मूलं कुरु राक्षसं ॥१२॥
12. samunmūlaya śokaṃ tvaṃ vyavasāyaṃ sthiraṃ kuru ,
tataḥ saparivāraṃ taṃ nirmūlaṃ kuru rākṣasaṃ.
12. samunmūlaya śokam tvam vyavasāyam sthiram kuru
tataḥ saparivāram tam nirmūlam kuru rākṣasam
12. tvam śokam samunmūlaya ca vyavasāyam sthiram kuru
tataḥ tam rākṣasam saparivāram nirmūlam kuru
12. You, eradicate your grief, and make your resolve firm. Then, utterly destroy that demon along with his family.
पृथिवीमपि काकुत्स्थ ससागरवनाचलाम् ।
परिवर्तयितुं शक्तः किमङ्ग पुन रावणम् ॥१३॥
13. pṛthivīmapi kākutstha sasāgaravanācalām ,
parivartayituṃ śaktaḥ kimaṅga puna rāvaṇam.
13. pṛthivīm api kākutstha sasāgaravanācalām
parivartayitum śaktaḥ kim aṅga punaḥ rāvaṇam
13. kākutstha tvam api sasāgaravanācalām pṛthivīm
parivartayitum śaktaḥ kim aṅga punaḥ rāvaṇam
13. O Kakutstha, you are capable of overturning even the earth with its oceans, forests, and mountains; how much more so then Ravana?
अहं तु खलु ते वीर्यं प्रसुप्तं प्रतिबोधये ।
दीप्तैराहुतिभिः काले भस्मच्छन्नमिवानलम् ॥१४॥
14. ahaṃ tu khalu te vīryaṃ prasuptaṃ pratibodhaye ,
dīptairāhutibhiḥ kāle bhasmacchannamivānalam.
14. ahaṃ tu khalu te vīryaṃ prasuptaṃ pratibodhaye
dīptaiḥ āhutibhiḥ kāle bhasmacchannam iva analam
14. ahaṃ tu khalu te prasuptaṃ vīryaṃ dīptaiḥ āhutibhiḥ
kāle bhasmacchannam analam iva pratibodhaye
14. Indeed, I will awaken your dormant valor, just as one kindles a fire hidden by ash with bright oblations (āhutibhiḥ) at the proper time.
लक्ष्मणस्य तु तद्वाक्यं प्रतिपूज्य हितं शुभम् ।
राघवः सुहृदं स्निग्धमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१५॥
15. lakṣmaṇasya tu tadvākyaṃ pratipūjya hitaṃ śubham ,
rāghavaḥ suhṛdaṃ snigdhamidaṃ vacanamabravīt.
15. lakṣmaṇasya tu tat vākyaṃ pratipūjya hitaṃ śubham
rāghavaḥ suhṛdaṃ snigdham idam vacanam abravīt
15. rāghavaḥ lakṣmaṇasya hitam śubham tat vākyam
pratipūjya tu snigdham suhṛdam idam vacanam abravīt
15. Rāma (Rāghava), having greatly honored that beneficial and auspicious counsel of Lakṣmaṇa, then spoke these words to his affectionate friend.
वाच्यं यदनुरक्तेन स्निग्धेन च हितेन च ।
सत्यविक्रम युक्तेन तदुक्तं लक्ष्मण त्वया ॥१६॥
16. vācyaṃ yadanuraktena snigdhena ca hitena ca ,
satyavikrama yuktena taduktaṃ lakṣmaṇa tvayā.
16. vācyaṃ yat anuraktena snigdhena ca hitena ca
satyavikrama yuktena tat uktaṃ lakṣmaṇa tvayā
16. lakṣmaṇa anuraktena snigdhena ca hitena ca
satyavikrama yuktena yat vācyam tvayā tat uktam
16. Lakṣmaṇa, what ought to be spoken by a devoted, affectionate, and benevolent person, one endowed with true valor (satyavikrama), that has been declared by you.
एष शोकः परित्यक्तः सर्वकार्यावसादकः ।
विक्रमेष्वप्रतिहतं तेजः प्रोत्साहयाम्यहम् ॥१७॥
17. eṣa śokaḥ parityaktaḥ sarvakāryāvasādakaḥ ,
vikrameṣvapratihataṃ tejaḥ protsāhayāmyaham.
17. eṣaḥ śokaḥ parityaktaḥ sarvakāryāvasādakaḥ
vikrameṣu apratihataṃ tejaḥ protsāhayāmi aham
17. eṣaḥ sarvakāryāvasādakaḥ śokaḥ parityaktaḥ
aham vikrameṣu apratihataṃ tejaḥ protsāhayāmi
17. This sorrow, which paralyzes all actions, has been completely abandoned. I shall now inspire my unhindered spiritual energy (tejas) for acts of valor.
शरत्कालं प्रतीक्षे ऽहमियं प्रावृडुपस्थिता ।
ततः सराष्ट्रं सगणं राक्षसं तं निहन्म्यहम् ॥१८॥
18. śaratkālaṃ pratīkṣe'hamiyaṃ prāvṛḍupasthitā ,
tataḥ sarāṣṭraṃ sagaṇaṃ rākṣasaṃ taṃ nihanmyaham.
18. śaratkālam pratīkṣe aham iyam prāvṛṭ upasthitā
tataḥ sarāṣṭram sagaṇam rākṣasam tam nihanmi aham
18. aham śaratkālam pratīkṣe .
iyam prāvṛṭ upasthitā .
tataḥ aham tam rākṣasam sarāṣṭram sagaṇam nihanmi .
18. I await the autumn season; this rainy season has arrived. Then I will certainly kill that demon, along with his kingdom and his entire retinue.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा हृष्टो रामस्य लक्ष्मणः ।
पुनरेवाब्रवीद्वाक्यं सौमित्रिर्मित्रनन्दनः ॥१९॥
19. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā hṛṣṭo rāmasya lakṣmaṇaḥ ,
punarevābravīdvākyaṃ saumitrirmitranandanaḥ.
19. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā hṛṣṭaḥ rāmasya lakṣmaṇaḥ
punaḥ eva abravīt vākyam saumitriḥ mitranandanaḥ
19. rāmasya tat vacanam śrutvā,
mitranandanaḥ saumitriḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ hṛṣṭaḥ punaḥ eva vākyam abravīt.
19. Lakshmana, the son of Sumitrā (saumitri) and the delight of his friends, was gladdened upon hearing those words of Rāma. He then spoke again.
एतत्ते सदृशं वाक्यमुक्तं शत्रुनिबर्हण ।
इदानीमसि काकुत्स्थ प्रकृतिं स्वामुपागतः ॥२०॥
20. etatte sadṛśaṃ vākyamuktaṃ śatrunibarhaṇa ,
idānīmasi kākutstha prakṛtiṃ svāmupāgataḥ.
20. etat te sadṛśam vākyam uktam śatrunibarhaṇa
idānīm asi kākutstha prakṛtim svām upāgataḥ
20. śatrunibarhaṇa! te etat sadṛśam vākyam uktam.
kākutstha! idānīm svām prakṛtim upāgataḥ asi.
20. O destroyer of enemies, this statement uttered by you is indeed appropriate. Now, O descendant of Kakutstha, you have returned to your true intrinsic nature (prakṛti).
विज्ञाय ह्यात्मनो वीर्यं तथ्यं भवितुमर्हसि ।
एतत् सदृशमुक्तं ते श्रुतस्याभिजनस्य च ॥२१॥
21. vijñāya hyātmano vīryaṃ tathyaṃ bhavitumarhasi ,
etat sadṛśamuktaṃ te śrutasyābhijanasya ca.
21. vijñāya hi ātmanaḥ vīryam tathyam bhavitum arhasi
etat sadṛśam uktam te śrutasya abhijanasyaca
21. hi,
ātmanaḥ vīryam विज्ञाय,
तथ्यम् भवितुम् अर्हसि ते एतत् श्रुतस्य अभिजनस्य च सदृशम् उक्तम् ।
21. Indeed, having recognized your own valor, you ought to be true to it. This statement, spoken by you, is appropriate for both your vast knowledge and your noble lineage.
तस्मात् पुरुषशार्दूल चिन्तयञ् शत्रुनिग्रहम् ।
वर्षारात्रमनुप्राप्तमतिक्रामय राघव ॥२२॥
22. tasmāt puruṣaśārdūla cintayañ śatrunigraham ,
varṣārātramanuprāptamatikrāmaya rāghava.
22. tasmāt puruṣaśārdūla cintayan śatrunigraham
varṣārātram anuprāptam atikrāmaya rāghava
22. rāghava puruṣaśārdūla tasmāt śatrunigraham
cintayan anuprāptam varṣārātram atikrāmaya
22. Therefore, O best among men, O scion of Raghu, while contemplating the conquest of your enemies, spend this period of the rainy season that has now arrived.
नियम्य कोपं प्रतिपाल्यतां शरत् क्षमस्व मासांश्चतुरो मया सह ।
वसाचले ऽस्मिन्मृगराजसेविते संवर्धयञ् शत्रुवधे समुद्यतः ॥२३॥
23. niyamya kopaṃ pratipālyatāṃ śarat kṣamasva māsāṃścaturo mayā saha ,
vasācale'sminmṛgarājasevite saṃvardhayañ śatruvadhe samudyataḥ.
23. niyamya kopam pratipālyatām śarat
kṣamasva māsān caturaḥ mayā saha
vasa acale asmin mṛgarājasevite
saṁvardhayan śatruvadhe samudyataḥ
23. kopam niyamya śarat pratipālyatām.
mayā saha caturaḥ māsān kṣamasva.
asmin mṛgarājasevite acale śatruvadhe samudyataḥ saṁvardhayan vasa
23. Restrain your anger and let autumn (śarat) be awaited. Bear patiently with me for these four months. Live on this mountain, frequented by lions, while you prepare for the slaying of your enemies, increasing your strength.
