भर्तारमपि चाक्रन्दल् लक्ष्मणं चैव सायुधम् ॥२॥
2. prahṛṣṭā cānavadyāṅgī mṛṣṭahāṭakavarṇinī ,
bhartāramapi cākrandal lakṣmaṇaṃ caiva sāyudham.

2. Delighted, with faultless limbs and a complexion like burnished gold, she cried out to her husband and even to armed Lakshmana.
तयाहूतौ नरव्याघ्रौ वैदेह्या रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
वीक्षमाणौ तु तं देशं तदा ददृशतुर्मृगम् ॥३॥
3. tayāhūtau naravyāghrau vaidehyā rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
vīkṣamāṇau tu taṃ deśaṃ tadā dadṛśaturmṛgam.

3. Summoned by her, by Vaidehī, those two tiger-like men, Rāma and Lakshmana, then, as they looked at that place, saw the deer.
शङ्कमानस्तु तं दृष्ट्वा लक्ष्मणो राममब्रवीत् ।
तमेवैनमहं मन्ये मारीचं राक्षसं मृगम् ॥४॥
4. śaṅkamānastu taṃ dṛṣṭvā lakṣmaṇo rāmamabravīt ,
tamevainamahaṃ manye mārīcaṃ rākṣasaṃ mṛgam.
4. śaṅkamānaḥ tu tam dṛṣṭvā lakṣmaṇaḥ rāmam abravīt
tam eva enam aham manye mārīcam rākṣasam mṛgam

4. But Lakshmana, having seen him and suspecting, spoke to Rāma: 'I believe this very deer is the demon Maricha.'
चरन्तो मृगयां हृष्टाः पापेनोपाधिना वने ।
अनेन निहता राम राजानः कामरूपिणा ॥५॥
5. caranto mṛgayāṃ hṛṣṭāḥ pāpenopādhinā vane ,
anena nihatā rāma rājānaḥ kāmarūpiṇā.

5. O Rāma, kings who were happily hunting in the forest have been killed by this wicked one, this shapeshifter, by means of a disguise.
अस्य मायाविदो मायामृगरूपमिदं कृतम् ।
भानुमत्पुरुषव्याघ्र गन्धर्वपुरसंनिभम् ॥६॥
6. asya māyāvido māyāmṛgarūpamidaṃ kṛtam ,
bhānumatpuruṣavyāghra gandharvapurasaṃnibham.

bhānumat puruṣavyāghra gandharvapurasaṃnibham

6. O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), this radiant form of an illusory deer (māyāmṛgarūpam), created by this master of illusion, resembles a fleeting celestial city (gandharvapurasaṃnibham).
मृगो ह्येवंविधो रत्नविचित्रो नास्ति राघव ।
जगत्यां जगतीनाथ मायैषा हि न संशयः ॥७॥
7. mṛgo hyevaṃvidho ratnavicitro nāsti rāghava ,
jagatyāṃ jagatīnātha māyaiṣā hi na saṃśayaḥ.
7. mṛgaḥ hi evaṃvidhaḥ ratnavicitraḥ na asti rāghava
jagatyām jagatīnātha māyā eṣā hi na saṃśayaḥ
7. rāghava jagatīnātha evaṃvidhaḥ ratnavicitraḥ
mṛgaḥ hi jagatyām na asti eṣā māyā hi na saṃśayaḥ
7. O Rāghava (rāghava), such a jewel-studded deer (ratnavicitraḥ) truly does not exist on earth, O lord of the earth. This is certainly an illusion (māyā); there is no doubt about it.
एवं ब्रुवाणं काकुत्स्थं प्रतिवार्य शुचिस्मिता ।
उवाच सीता संहृष्टा छद्मना हृतचेतना ॥८॥
8. evaṃ bruvāṇaṃ kākutsthaṃ prativārya śucismitā ,
uvāca sītā saṃhṛṣṭā chadmanā hṛtacetanā.

8. Interrupting Rāma (kākutstha) who was speaking thus, Sītā, with a pure smile, spoke, appearing delighted (saṃhṛṣṭā), though her mind was captivated by the deception (chadmanā hṛtacetanā).
आर्यपुत्राभिरामो ऽसौ मृगो हरति मे मनः ।
आनयैनं महाबाहो क्रीडार्थं नो भविष्यति ॥९॥
9. āryaputrābhirāmo'sau mṛgo harati me manaḥ ,
ānayainaṃ mahābāho krīḍārthaṃ no bhaviṣyati.
9. āryaputra abhirāmaḥ asau mṛgaḥ harati me manaḥ
ānaya enam mahābāho krīḍārtham naḥ bhaviṣyati

9. O noble husband (āryaputra), this charming deer (abhirāmaḥ mṛgaḥ) captivates my mind. Bring him here, O mighty-armed one (mahābāho)! He will be for our sport.
इहाश्रमपदे ऽस्माकं बहवः पुण्यदर्शनाः ।
मृगाश्चरन्ति सहिताश्चमराः सृमरास्तथा ॥१०॥
10. ihāśramapade'smākaṃ bahavaḥ puṇyadarśanāḥ ,
mṛgāścaranti sahitāścamarāḥ sṛmarāstathā.
10. iha āśramapade asmākam bahavaḥ puṇyadarśanāḥ
mṛgāḥ caranti sahitāḥ camarāḥ sṛmarāḥ tathā
10. asmākam āśramapade iha puṇyadarśanāḥ bahavaḥ
mṛgāḥ camarāḥ sṛmarāḥ tathā sahitāḥ caranti
10. Here in our hermitage, many deer whose sight is considered meritorious roam together, as do yaks and sṛmara deer.
ऋक्षाः पृषतसंघाश्च वानराः किंनरास्तथा ।
विचरन्ति महाबाहो रूपश्रेष्ठा महाबलाः ॥११॥
11. ṛkṣāḥ pṛṣatasaṃghāśca vānarāḥ kiṃnarāstathā ,
vicaranti mahābāho rūpaśreṣṭhā mahābalāḥ.
11. ṛkṣāḥ pṛṣatasaṅghāḥ ca vānarāḥ kinnarāḥ tathā
vicaranti mahābāho rūpaśreṣṭhāḥ mahābalāḥ
11. mahābāho ṛkṣāḥ pṛṣatasaṅghāḥ ca vānarāḥ
kinnarāḥ tathā rūpaśreṣṭhāḥ mahābalāḥ vicaranti
11. O mighty-armed one, bears, groups of spotted deer, monkeys, and kinnaras - who are splendid in form and immensely strong - also roam about.
न चास्य सदृशो राजन्दृष्टपूर्वो मृगः पुरा ।
तेजसा क्षमया दीप्त्या यथायं मृगसत्तमः ॥१२॥
12. na cāsya sadṛśo rājandṛṣṭapūrvo mṛgaḥ purā ,
tejasā kṣamayā dīptyā yathāyaṃ mṛgasattamaḥ.
12. na ca asya sadṛśaḥ rājan dṛṣṭapūrvaḥ mṛgaḥ purā
tejasā kṣamayā dīptyā yathā ayam mṛgasattamaḥ
12. rājan purā asya sadṛśaḥ dṛṣṭapūrvaḥ mṛgaḥ na ca
yathā ayam mṛgasattamaḥ tejasā kṣamayā dīptyā
12. O king, no deer similar to this best among deer has ever been seen before, distinguished by such brilliance, endurance, and radiance.
नानावर्णविचित्राङ्गो रत्नबिन्दुसमाचितः ।
द्योतयन् वनमव्यग्रं शोभते शशिसंनिभः ॥१३॥
13. nānāvarṇavicitrāṅgo ratnabindusamācitaḥ ,
dyotayan vanamavyagraṃ śobhate śaśisaṃnibhaḥ.
13. nānāvarṇavicitrāṅgaḥ ratnabindusamācitaḥ
dyotayan vanam avyagram śobhate śaśisaṃnibhaḥ
13. nānāvarṇavicitrāṅgaḥ ratnabindusamācitaḥ

13. It possesses limbs wonderfully variegated with many colors and is adorned with jewel-like spots. Resembling the moon, it shines, illuminating the tranquil forest.
अहो रूपमहो लक्ष्मीः स्वरसंपच्च शोभना ।
मृगो ऽद्भुतो विचित्रो ऽसौ हृदयं हरतीव मे ॥१४॥
14. aho rūpamaho lakṣmīḥ svarasaṃpacca śobhanā ,
mṛgo'dbhuto vicitro'sau hṛdayaṃ haratīva me.
14. aho rūpam aho lakṣmīḥ svarasampat ca śobhanā
mṛgaḥ adbhutaḥ vicitraḥ asau hṛdayam harati iva me
14. aho asau adbhutaḥ vicitraḥ mṛgaḥ rūpam aho lakṣmīḥ
ca śobhanā svarasampat me hṛdayam harati iva
14. Oh, what beauty! Oh, what splendor! And its voice is so lovely. This marvelous, wondrous deer seems to captivate my heart.
यदि ग्रहणमभ्येति जीवन्नेव मृगस्तव ।
आश्चर्यभूतं भवति विस्मयं जनयिष्यति ॥१५॥
15. yadi grahaṇamabhyeti jīvanneva mṛgastava ,
āścaryabhūtaṃ bhavati vismayaṃ janayiṣyati.
15. yadi grahaṇam abhyeti jīvan eva mṛgaḥ tava
āścaryabhūtam bhavati vismayam janayiṣyati
15. yadi tava mṛgaḥ jīvan eva grahaṇam abhyeti,
(tadā) āścaryabhūtam bhavati,
vismayam janayiṣyati (ca).
15. If this deer comes into your possession (grahaṇa) alive, it will be an astonishing thing and will certainly cause wonder (vismaya).
समाप्तवनवासानां राज्यस्थानां च नः पुनः ।
अन्तःपुरविभूषार्थो मृग एष भविष्यति ॥१६॥
16. samāptavanavāsānāṃ rājyasthānāṃ ca naḥ punaḥ ,
antaḥpuravibhūṣārtho mṛga eṣa bhaviṣyati.
16. samāptavanavāsānām rājyasthānām ca naḥ punaḥ
antaḥpuravibhūṣārthaḥ mṛgaḥ eṣaḥ bhaviṣyati
16. punaḥ naḥ samāptavanavāsānām ca rājyasthānām
eṣaḥ mṛgaḥ antaḥpuravibhūṣārthaḥ bhaviṣyati
16. Furthermore, for us, who will have completed our forest exile and returned to our kingdom, this deer will serve as an adornment for the inner palace (antaḥpura).
भरतस्यार्यपुत्रस्य श्वश्रूणां मम च प्रभो ।
मृगरूपमिदं दिव्यं विस्मयं जनयिष्यति ॥१७॥
17. bharatasyāryaputrasya śvaśrūṇāṃ mama ca prabho ,
mṛgarūpamidaṃ divyaṃ vismayaṃ janayiṣyati.
17. bharatasya āryaputrasya śvaśrūṇām mama ca prabho
mṛgarūpam idam divyam vismayam janayiṣyati
17. prabho,
idam divyam mṛgarūpam bharatasya āryaputrasya ca mama śvaśrūṇām vismayam janayiṣyati
17. Oh Lord (prabhu), this divine deer-form will cause wonder (vismaya) to Bharata, to my noble husband (āryaputra), and to my mothers-in-law.
जीवन्न यदि ते ऽभ्येति ग्रहणं मृगसत्तमः ।
अजिनं नरशार्दूल रुचिरं मे भविष्यति ॥१८॥
18. jīvanna yadi te'bhyeti grahaṇaṃ mṛgasattamaḥ ,
ajinaṃ naraśārdūla ruciraṃ me bhaviṣyati.
18. jīvan na yadi te abhyeti grahaṇam mṛgasattamaḥ
ajinam naraśārdūla ruchiram me bhaviṣyati
18. naraśārdūla yadi mṛgasattamaḥ jīvan na te
grahaṇam abhyeti ruchiram ajinam me bhaviṣyati
18. O tiger among men, if this supreme deer does not come alive into your grasp, then its beautiful hide will be mine.
निहतस्यास्य सत्त्वस्य जाम्बूनदमयत्वचि ।
शष्पबृस्यां विनीतायामिच्छाम्यहमुपासितुम् ॥१९॥
19. nihatasyāsya sattvasya jāmbūnadamayatvaci ,
śaṣpabṛsyāṃ vinītāyāmicchāmyahamupāsitum.
19. nihatasya asya sattvasya jāmbūnadamayatvaci
śaṣpabṛsyām vinītāyām icchāmi aham upāsitum
19. aham nihatasya asya sattvasya jāmbūnadamayatvaci
vinītāyām śaṣpabṛsyām upāsitum icchāmi
19. I desire to sit upon the hide of this slain creature, a hide made of Jambūnada gold, spread out like a couch of fresh grass.
कामवृत्तमिदं रौद्रं स्त्रीणामसदृशं मतम् ।
वपुषा त्वस्य सत्त्वस्य विस्मयो जनितो मम ॥२०॥
20. kāmavṛttamidaṃ raudraṃ strīṇāmasadṛśaṃ matam ,
vapuṣā tvasya sattvasya vismayo janito mama.
20. kāmavṛttam idam raudram strīṇām asadṛśam matam
vapuṣā tu asya sattvasya vismayaḥ janitaḥ mama
20. idam raudram kāmavṛttam strīṇām asadṛśam matam
tu asya sattvasya vapuṣā mama vismayaḥ janitaḥ
20. This fierce, arbitrary conduct is considered unseemly for women. Yet, wonder has been produced in me by the body of this creature.
तेन काञ्चनरोम्णा तु मणिप्रवरशृङ्गिणा ।
तरुणादित्यवर्णेन नक्षत्रपथवर्चसा ।
बभूव राघवस्यापि मनो विस्मयमागतम् ॥२१॥
21. tena kāñcanaromṇā tu maṇipravaraśṛṅgiṇā ,
taruṇādityavarṇena nakṣatrapathavarcasā ,
babhūva rāghavasyāpi mano vismayamāgatam.
21. tena kāñcanaromṇā tu maṇipravaraśṛṅgiṇā
taruṇādityavarṇena
nakṣatrapathavarcasā babhūva rāghavasya
api manaḥ vismayam āgatam

21. Indeed, by that creature - which had golden hair, splendid jeweled horns, the hue of the rising sun, and the brilliance of the starry path - the mind of Rāghava (Rāma) too was filled with astonishment.
एवं सीतावचः श्रुत्वा दृष्ट्वा च मृगमद्भुतम् ।
उवाच राघवो हृष्टो भ्रातरं लक्ष्मणं वचः ॥२२॥
22. evaṃ sītāvacaḥ śrutvā dṛṣṭvā ca mṛgamadbhutam ,
uvāca rāghavo hṛṣṭo bhrātaraṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ vacaḥ.
22. evam sītā-vacaḥ śrutvā dṛṣṭvā ca mṛgam adbhutam
uvāca rāghavaḥ hṛṣṭaḥ bhrātaram lakṣmaṇam vacaḥ
22. evam sītā-vacaḥ śrutvā adbhutam mṛgam ca dṛṣṭvā
hṛṣṭaḥ rāghavaḥ bhrātaram lakṣmaṇam vacaḥ uvāca
22. Having heard Sita's words and seen the extraordinary deer, Rama, delighted, spoke to his brother Lakshmana.
पश्य लक्ष्मण वैदेह्याः स्पृहां मृगगतामिमाम् ।
रूपश्रेष्ठतया ह्येष मृगो ऽद्य न भविष्यति ॥२३॥
23. paśya lakṣmaṇa vaidehyāḥ spṛhāṃ mṛgagatāmimām ,
rūpaśreṣṭhatayā hyeṣa mṛgo'dya na bhaviṣyati.
23. paśya lakṣmaṇa vaidehyāḥ spṛhām mṛga-gatām imām
rūpa-śreṣṭhatayā hi eṣaḥ mṛgaḥ adya na bhaviṣyati
23. lakṣmaṇa paśya vaidehyāḥ imām mṛga-gatām spṛhām
hi eṣaḥ mṛgaḥ rūpa-śreṣṭhatayā adya na bhaviṣyati
23. Look, Lakshmana, at this longing of Vaidehi (Sita) for the deer. Surely, because of its exceptional beauty, this deer cannot be real.
न वने नन्दनोद्देशे न चैत्ररथसंश्रये ।
कुतः पृथिव्यां सौमित्रे यो ऽस्य कश्चित् समो मृगः ॥२४॥
24. na vane nandanoddeśe na caitrarathasaṃśraye ,
kutaḥ pṛthivyāṃ saumitre yo'sya kaścit samo mṛgaḥ.
24. na vane nandana-uddeśe na caitraratha-saṃśraye
kutaḥ pṛthivyām saumitre yaḥ asya kaścit samaḥ mṛgaḥ
24. saumitre,
na vane,
na nandana-uddeśe,
na caitraratha-saṃśraye (asti).
asya samaḥ kaścit mṛgaḥ pṛthivyām kutaḥ yaḥ (asti)?
24. Not in any ordinary forest, nor in the heavenly Nandanavana, nor even in the Chaitraratha garden, O son of Sumitra (Lakshmana). Where on earth could there be any deer equal to this one?
प्रतिलोमानुलोमाश्च रुचिरा रोमराजयः ।
शोभन्ते मृगमाश्रित्य चित्राः कनकबिन्दुभिः ॥२५॥
25. pratilomānulomāśca rucirā romarājayaḥ ,
śobhante mṛgamāśritya citrāḥ kanakabindubhiḥ.
25. pratiloma-anulomāḥ ca rucirāḥ roma-rājayaḥ
śobhante mṛgam āśritya citrāḥ kanaka-bindubhiḥ

25. The charming and variegated rows of hair, appearing both against and with the natural flow, adorn the deer, shining with golden spots.
पश्यास्य जृम्भमाणस्य दीप्तामग्निशिखोपमाम् ।
जिह्वां मुखान्निःसरन्तीं मेघादिव शतह्रदाम् ॥२६॥
26. paśyāsya jṛmbhamāṇasya dīptāmagniśikhopamām ,
jihvāṃ mukhānniḥsarantīṃ meghādiva śatahradām.
26. paśya asya jṛmbhamāṇasya dīptām agniśikhopamām
jihvām mukhāt niḥsarantīm meghāt iva śatahṛdām
26. asya jṛmbhamāṇasya mukhāt niḥsarantīm agniśikhopamām

26. Behold! See its tongue, blazing like a flame of fire, emerging from its gaping mouth, like a hundred flashes of lightning from a cloud.
मसारगल्वर्कमुखः शङ्खमुक्तानिभोदरः ।
कस्य नामानिरूप्यो ऽसौ न मनो लोभयेन्मृगः ॥२७॥
27. masāragalvarkamukhaḥ śaṅkhamuktānibhodaraḥ ,
kasya nāmānirūpyo'sau na mano lobhayenmṛgaḥ.
27. masāragalvarkamukhaḥ śaṅkhamuktānibhōdaraḥ kasya
nāma anirūpyaḥ asau na manaḥ lobhayet mṛgaḥ
27. masāragalvarkamukhaḥ śaṅkhamuktānibhōdaraḥ asau
anirūpyaḥ mṛgaḥ kasya manaḥ na nāma lobhayet
27. Whose mind, indeed, would this deer - with a face like a lustrous jewel and a belly resembling a conch shell or a pearl - not enchant? Truly, this indescribably beautiful deer would captivate anyone's mind.
कस्य रूपमिदं दृष्ट्वा जाम्बूनदमयप्रभम् ।
नानारत्नमयं दिव्यं न मनो विस्मयं व्रजेत् ॥२८॥
28. kasya rūpamidaṃ dṛṣṭvā jāmbūnadamayaprabham ,
nānāratnamayaṃ divyaṃ na mano vismayaṃ vrajet.
28. kasya rūpam idam dṛṣṭvā jāmbūnadamayaprabham
nānāratnamayam divyam na manaḥ vismayam vrajet
28. idam jāmbūnadamayaprabham nānāratnamayam divyam

28. Seeing this form, brilliant as pure gold, adorned with various divine jewels, whose mind would not be filled with wonder?
मांसहेतोरपि मृगान् विहारार्थं च धन्विनः ।
घ्नन्ति लक्ष्मण राजानो मृगयायां महावने ॥२९॥
29. māṃsahetorapi mṛgān vihārārthaṃ ca dhanvinaḥ ,
ghnanti lakṣmaṇa rājāno mṛgayāyāṃ mahāvane.
29. māṃsahetoḥ api mṛgān vihārārtham ca dhanvinaḥ
ghnanti lakṣmaṇa rājānaḥ mṛgayāyām mahāvane
29. lakṣmaṇa rājānaḥ dhanvinaḥ api māṃsahetoḥ ca
vihārārtham mṛgān mahāvane mṛgayāyām ghnanti
29. O Lakshmana, kings who are archers kill deer in the great forest, sometimes for meat, and other times for sport.
धनानि व्यवसायेन विचीयन्ते महावने ।
धातवो विविधाश्चापि मणिरत्नसुवर्णिनः ॥३०॥
30. dhanāni vyavasāyena vicīyante mahāvane ,
dhātavo vividhāścāpi maṇiratnasuvarṇinaḥ.

30. Wealth is accumulated through enterprise, even in a vast forest. Likewise, various minerals, rich in jewels, gems, and gold, are found.
तत् सारमखिलं नॄणां धनं निचयवर्धनम् ।
मनसा चिन्तितं सर्वं यथा शुक्रस्य लक्ष्मण ॥३१॥
31. tat sāramakhilaṃ nṝṇāṃ dhanaṃ nicayavardhanam ,
manasā cintitaṃ sarvaṃ yathā śukrasya lakṣmaṇa.
31. tat sāram akhilam nṝṇām dhanam nicayavardhanam
manasā cintitam sarvam yathā śukrasya lakṣmaṇa
31. lakṣmaṇa tat nṝṇām akhilam sāram nicayavardhanam
dhanam sarvam manasā yathā śukrasya cintitam
31. That wealth, which is the entire essence for human beings and which increases prosperity, is all conceived in the mind, O Lakṣmaṇa, just as Śukra's [wisdom is].
अर्थी येनार्थकृत्येन संव्रजत्यविचारयन् ।
तमर्थमर्थशास्त्रज्ञः प्राहुरर्थ्याश्च लक्ष्मण ॥३२॥
32. arthī yenārthakṛtyena saṃvrajatyavicārayan ,
tamarthamarthaśāstrajñaḥ prāhurarthyāśca lakṣmaṇa.
32. arthī yena arthakṛtyena saṃvrajati avicārayan tam
artham arthaśāstrajñaḥ prāhuḥ arthyāḥ ca lakṣmaṇa
32. lakṣmaṇa yena arthakṛtyena arthī avicārayan saṃvrajati
tam artham arthaśāstrajñaḥ arthyāḥ ca prāhuḥ
32. That purpose (artha), which a seeker (arthī) pursues through an economic activity without hesitation, is what the experts in the science of wealth (arthaśāstra) and those who desire wealth (arthyāḥ) refer to as a valid objective, O Lakṣmaṇa.
एतस्य मृगरत्नस्य परार्ध्ये काञ्चनत्वचि ।
उपवेक्ष्यति वैदेही मया सह सुमध्यमा ॥३३॥
33. etasya mṛgaratnasya parārdhye kāñcanatvaci ,
upavekṣyati vaidehī mayā saha sumadhyamā.

33. Upon the supremely valuable golden skin of this jewel-like deer, Vaīdehī, the slender-waisted one, will sit with me.
न कादली न प्रियकी न प्रवेणी न चाविकी ।
भवेदेतस्य सदृशी स्पर्शनेनेति मे मतिः ॥३४॥
34. na kādalī na priyakī na praveṇī na cāvikī ,
bhavedetasya sadṛśī sparśaneneti me matiḥ.
34. na kādalī na priyakī na praveṇī na ca āvikī
bhavet etasya sadṛśī sparśanena iti me matiḥ
34. me matiḥ iti kādalī na priyakī na praveṇī
na ca āvikī etasya sparśanena sadṛśī bhavet
34. My conviction is that neither a banana plant, nor the priyakī plant, nor a fine blanket, nor a woollen rug can be equal to this in softness to the touch.
एष चैव मृगः श्रीमान्यश्च दिव्यो नभश्चरः ।
उभावेतौ मृगौ दिव्यौ तारामृगमहीमृगौ ॥३५॥
35. eṣa caiva mṛgaḥ śrīmānyaśca divyo nabhaścaraḥ ,
ubhāvetau mṛgau divyau tārāmṛgamahīmṛgau.
35. eṣaḥ ca eva mṛgaḥ śrīmān yaḥ ca divyaḥ nabhaścaraḥ
ubhau etau mṛgau divyau tārāmṛgamahīmṛgau
35. eṣaḥ śrīmān mṛgaḥ ca eva yaḥ ca divyaḥ nabhaścaraḥ
ubhau etau divyau mṛgau tārāmṛgamahīmṛgau
35. This glorious deer, and indeed, that other one which is divine and moves in the sky - both of these are indeed divine 'deer': the star-deer (tārāmṛga) and the earth-deer (mahīmṛga).
यदि वायं तथा यन्मां भवेद्वदसि लक्ष्मण ।
मायैषा राक्षसस्येति कर्तव्यो ऽस्य वधो मया ॥३६॥
36. yadi vāyaṃ tathā yanmāṃ bhavedvadasi lakṣmaṇa ,
māyaiṣā rākṣasasyeti kartavyo'sya vadho mayā.
36. yadi vā ayam tathā yat mām bhavet vadasi lakṣmaṇa |
māyā eṣā rākṣasasya iti kartavyaḥ asya vadhaḥ mayā
36. lakṣmaṇa yadi vā ayam tathā yat mām vadasi eṣā
rākṣasasya māyā iti asya vadhaḥ mayā kartavyaḥ
36. O Lakshmana, if this is truly as you say - that it might be an illusion (māyā) created by a demon - then his slaying must be carried out by me.
एतेन हि नृशंसेन मारीचेनाकृतात्मना ।
वने विचरता पूर्वं हिंसिता मुनिपुंगवाः ॥३७॥
37. etena hi nṛśaṃsena mārīcenākṛtātmanā ,
vane vicaratā pūrvaṃ hiṃsitā munipuṃgavāḥ.
37. etena hi nṛśaṃsena mārīcena akṛtātmanā |
vane vicaratā pūrvaṃ hiṃsitāḥ munipuṅgavāḥ
37. hi etena nṛśaṃsena akṛtātmanā mārīcena
vane vicaratā pūrvaṃ munipuṅgavāḥ hiṃsitāḥ
37. For by this cruel, unrefined Maricha, while he was wandering in the forest, the foremost among the sages (munipuṅgavāḥ) were previously harmed.
उत्थाय बहवो येन मृगयायां जनाधिपाः ।
निहताः परमेष्वासास्तस्माद्वध्यस्त्वयं मृगः ॥३८॥
38. utthāya bahavo yena mṛgayāyāṃ janādhipāḥ ,
nihatāḥ parameṣvāsāstasmādvadhyastvayaṃ mṛgaḥ.
38. utthāya bahavaḥ yena mṛgayāyām janādhipāḥ
nihatāḥ parameṣvāsāḥ tasmāt vadhyaḥ tu ayam mṛgaḥ
38. yena mṛgayāyām bahavaḥ janādhipāḥ parameṣvāsāḥ nihatāḥ utthāya,
tasmāt ayam mṛgaḥ tu vadhyaḥ
38. Because many lords (janādhipāḥ), who were great archers, were killed by this (creature) during a hunt, therefore this deer must be slain.
पुरस्तादिह वातापिः परिभूय तपस्विनः ।
उदरस्थो द्विजान् हन्ति स्वगर्भो ऽश्वतरीमिव ॥३९॥
39. purastādiha vātāpiḥ paribhūya tapasvinaḥ ,
udarastho dvijān hanti svagarbho'śvatarīmiva.
39. purastāt iha vātāpiḥ paribhūya tapasvinaḥ
udarasthaḥ dvijān hanti svagarbhaḥ aśvatarīm iva
39. purastāt iha vātāpiḥ tapasvinaḥ paribhūya,

39. Here, in the past, Vātāpi would overpower ascetics (tapasvinaḥ) and kill Brahmins (dvijān) from within their bellies, just as a she-mule is killed by her own fetus.
स कदा चिच्चिराल् लोके आससाद महामुनिम् ।
अगस्त्यं तेजसा युक्तं भक्ष्यस्तस्य बभूव ह ॥४०॥
40. sa kadā ciccirāl loke āsasāda mahāmunim ,
agastyaṃ tejasā yuktaṃ bhakṣyastasya babhūva ha.
40. sa kadā cit cirāt loke āsasāda mahāmunim
agastyam tejasā yuktam bhakṣyaḥ tasya babhūva ha
40. sa kadā cit cirāt loke tejasā yuktam mahāmunim agastyam āsasāda,
(sa ca) tasya bhakṣyaḥ babhūva ha
40. One day, after a long time, he (Vātāpi) encountered the great sage Agastya (mahāmuni), who was endowed with immense spiritual power, and Vātāpi himself became his (Agastya's) prey.
समुत्थाने च तद् रूपं कर्तुकामं समीक्ष्य तम् ।
उत्स्मयित्वा तु भगवान् वातापिमिदमब्रवीत् ॥४१॥
41. samutthāne ca tad rūpaṃ kartukāmaṃ samīkṣya tam ,
utsmayitvā tu bhagavān vātāpimidamabravīt.
41. samutthāne ca tat rūpam kartukāmam samīkṣya
tam utsmayitvā tu bhagavān vātāpim idam abravīt
41. ca samutthāne tam tat rūpam kartukāmam samīkṣya,
tu bhagavān utsmayitvā vātāpim idam abravīt
41. And seeing him (Vātāpi) desiring to resume that form upon rising, the revered (Agastya), having smiled, spoke these words to Vātāpi.
त्वयाविगण्य वातापे परिभूताश्च तेजसा ।
जीवलोके द्विजश्रेष्ठास्तस्मादसि जरां गतः ॥४२॥
42. tvayāvigaṇya vātāpe paribhūtāśca tejasā ,
jīvaloke dvijaśreṣṭhāstasmādasi jarāṃ gataḥ.
42. tvayā avigaṇya vātāpe paribhūtāḥ ca tejasā
jīvaloke dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ tasmāt asi jarām gataḥ
42. vātāpe,
tvayā jīvaloke dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ avigaṇya tejasā ca paribhūtāḥ,
tasmāt jarām gataḥ asi.
42. O Vātāpi, because you, disregarding them, overpowered the best among the twice-born (dvija) in this world with your might, therefore you have become old.
एवं तन्न भवेद् रक्षो वातापिरिव लक्ष्मण ।
मद्विधं यो ऽतिमन्येत धर्मनित्यं जितेन्द्रियम् ॥४३॥
43. evaṃ tanna bhaved rakṣo vātāpiriva lakṣmaṇa ,
madvidhaṃ yo'timanyeta dharmanityaṃ jitendriyam.
43. evam tat na bhavet rakṣaḥ vātāpiḥ iva lakṣmaṇa
madvidham yaḥ atimanyeta dharmanityam jitendriyam
43. lakṣmaṇa,
yaḥ dharmanityam jitendriyam madvidham atimanyeta,
tat rakṣaḥ vātāpiḥ iva evam na bhavet.
43. O Lakshmana, a demon (rakṣas) who would disregard someone like me - who is always dedicated to natural law (dharma) and has conquered his senses - would not fare like Vātāpi (i.e., would meet a swift and dire end).
भवेद्धतो ऽयं वातापिरगस्त्येनेव मा गतिः ।
इह त्वं भव संनद्धो यन्त्रितो रक्ष मैथिलीम् ॥४४॥
44. bhaveddhato'yaṃ vātāpiragastyeneva mā gatiḥ ,
iha tvaṃ bhava saṃnaddho yantrito rakṣa maithilīm.
44. bhavet hataḥ ayam vātāpiḥ agastyena iva mā gatiḥ
iha tvam bhava sannaddhaḥ yantritaḥ rakṣa maithilīm
44. ayam vātāpiḥ agastyena iva hataḥ bhavet; mā gatiḥ.
iha tvam sannaddhaḥ yantritaḥ bhava,
maithilīm rakṣa.
44. May this (demon) be killed just as Vātāpi was by Agastya, so that such a fate (gati) does not befall me. Therefore, you remain here, vigilant and self-controlled, protecting Maithili (Sita).
अस्यामायत्तमस्माकं यत् कृत्यं रघुनन्दन ।
अहमेनं वधिष्यामि ग्रहीष्याम्यथ वा मृगम् ॥४५॥
45. asyāmāyattamasmākaṃ yat kṛtyaṃ raghunandana ,
ahamenaṃ vadhiṣyāmi grahīṣyāmyatha vā mṛgam.
45. asyām āyattam asmākam yat kṛtyam raghunandana
aham enam vadhiṣyāmi grahīṣyāmi atha vā mṛgam
45. raghunandana,
yat asmākam kṛtyam asyām āyattam.
aham enam mṛgam vadhiṣyāmi,
atha vā grahīṣyāmi.
45. O son of Raghu (Raghunandana), our entire endeavor (kṛtya) is dependent on her (Sita). Therefore, I will either kill this deer or capture it.
यावद्गच्छामि सौमित्रे मृगमानयितुं द्रुतम् ।
पश्य लक्ष्मण वैदेहीं मृगत्वचि गतस्पृहाम् ॥४६॥
46. yāvadgacchāmi saumitre mṛgamānayituṃ drutam ,
paśya lakṣmaṇa vaidehīṃ mṛgatvaci gataspṛhām.
46. yāvat gacchāmi saumitre mṛgam ānayitum drutam
paśya lakṣmaṇa vaidehīm mṛgatvaci gataspṛhām
46. saumitre lakṣmaṇa yāvat aham drutam mṛgam ānayitum
gacchāmi vaidehīm mṛgatvaci gataspṛhām paśya
46. O Saumitra, as long as I go quickly to bring the deer, Lakshmana, observe Vaidehi, who has developed a desire for the deer skin.
त्वचा प्रधानया ह्येष मृगो ऽद्य न भविष्यति ।
अप्रमत्तेन ते भाव्यमाश्रमस्थेन सीतया ॥४७॥
47. tvacā pradhānayā hyeṣa mṛgo'dya na bhaviṣyati ,
apramattena te bhāvyamāśramasthena sītayā.
47. tvacā pradhānayā hi eṣaḥ mṛgaḥ adya na bhaviṣyati
apramattena te bhāvyam āśramas_thena sītayā
47. hi eṣaḥ mṛgaḥ adya pradhānayā tvacā na bhaviṣyati

47. Indeed, this deer will cease to exist today because of its excellent skin. You must remain vigilant while staying in the hermitage with Sita.
यावत् पृषतमेकेन सायकेन निहन्म्यहम् ।
हत्वैतच्चर्म आदाय शीघ्रमेष्यामि लक्ष्मण ॥४८॥
48. yāvat pṛṣatamekena sāyakena nihanmyaham ,
hatvaitaccarma ādāya śīghrameṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa.
48. yāvat pṛṣatam ekena sāyakena nihanmi aham
hatvā etat carma ādāya śīghram eṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa
48. lakṣmaṇa yāvat aham ekena sāyakena pṛṣatam
nihanmi hatvā etat carma ādāya śīghram eṣyāmi
48. As soon as I kill this spotted deer with a single arrow, O Lakshmana, having killed it and taken this skin, I will return quickly.
प्रदक्षिणेनातिबलेन पक्षिणा जटायुषा बुद्धिमता च लक्ष्मण ।
भवाप्रमत्तः प्रतिगृह्य मैथिलीं प्रतिक्षणं सर्वत एव शङ्कितः ॥४९॥
49. pradakṣiṇenātibalena pakṣiṇā jaṭāyuṣā buddhimatā ca lakṣmaṇa ,
bhavāpramattaḥ pratigṛhya maithilīṃ pratikṣaṇaṃ sarvata eva śaṅkitaḥ.
49. pradakṣiṇena atibalena pakṣiṇā
jaṭāyuṣā buddhimatā ca lakṣmaṇa bhava
apramattaḥ pratigṛhya maithilīm
pratikṣaṇam sarvataḥ eva śaṅkitaḥ

49. O Lakshmana, with the auspicious, very powerful, and wise bird Jatayu (present), be vigilant, having taken Maithili into your care, and be constantly apprehensive from all directions.
