श्रुत्वा हनुमतो वाक्यं प्रश्रितं धर्मसंहितम् ।
स्वामिसत्कारसंयुक्तमङ्गदो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. śrutvā hanumato vākyaṃ praśritaṃ dharmasaṃhitam ,
svāmisatkārasaṃyuktamaṅgado vākyamabravīt.

1. Having heard Hanumān's humble, righteous (dharma-saṃhitam), and master-respecting words, Aṅgada spoke.
स्थैर्यं सर्वात्मना शौचमानृशंस्यमथार्जवम् ।
विक्रमैश्चैव धैर्यं च सुग्रीवे नोपपद्यते ॥२॥
2. sthairyaṃ sarvātmanā śaucamānṛśaṃsyamathārjavam ,
vikramaiścaiva dhairyaṃ ca sugrīve nopapadyate.
2. sthairyaṃ sarvātmanā śaucam ānṛśaṃsyam atha ārjavam
vikramaiḥ ca eva dhairyaṃ ca sugrīve na upapadyate
2. Steadiness, complete purity, kindness, and straightforwardness, along with courage and valor, are not found in Sugrīva.
भ्रातुर्ज्येष्ठस्य यो भार्यां जीवितो महिषीं प्रियाम् ।
धर्मेण मातरं यस्तु स्वीकरोति जुगुप्सितः ॥३॥
3. bhrāturjyeṣṭhasya yo bhāryāṃ jīvito mahiṣīṃ priyām ,
dharmeṇa mātaraṃ yastu svīkaroti jugupsitaḥ.
3. bhrātuḥ jyeṣṭhasya yaḥ bhāryām jīvitaḥ mahiṣīm
priyām dharmeṇa mātaram yaḥ tu svīkaroti jugupsitaḥ
3. That despicable person who takes his elder brother's dear queen and wife, while his brother is still alive, and (then hypocritically) accepts her as a mother according to (dharma)...
कथं स धर्मं जानीते येन भ्रात्रा दुरात्मना ।
युद्धायाभिनियुक्तेन बिलस्य पिहितं मुखम् ॥४॥
4. kathaṃ sa dharmaṃ jānīte yena bhrātrā durātmanā ,
yuddhāyābhiniyuktena bilasya pihitaṃ mukham.
4. kathaṃ saḥ dharmam jānīte yena bhrātrā durātmanā
yuddhāya abhiniyuktena bilasya pihitam mukham
4. How can he (Sugrīva) know (dharma), that wicked-minded one, by whom, when his brother was engaged in battle, the mouth of the cave was closed?
सत्यात् पाणिगृहीतश्च कृतकर्मा महायशाः ।
विस्मृतो राघवो येन स कस्य सुकृतं स्मरेत् ॥५॥
5. satyāt pāṇigṛhītaśca kṛtakarmā mahāyaśāḥ ,
vismṛto rāghavo yena sa kasya sukṛtaṃ smaret.

5. By whom Rāma, who was truthful, accepted as an ally, and highly renowned for his great achievements, has been forgotten, how can such a person remember anyone else's good deeds?
लक्ष्मणस्य भयाद् येन नाधर्मभयभीरुणा ।
आदिष्टा मार्गितुं सीतां धर्ममस्मिन् कथं भवेत् ॥६॥
6. lakṣmaṇasya bhayād yena nādharmabhayabhīruṇā ,
ādiṣṭā mārgituṃ sītāṃ dharmamasmin kathaṃ bhavet.
6. lakṣmaṇasya bhayāt yena na adharma-bhaya-bhīruṇā
ādiṣṭā mārgitum sītāṃ dharmaḥ asmin kathaṃ bhavet
6. yena lakṣmaṇasya bhayāt na adharma-bhaya-bhīruṇā
sītāṃ mārgitum ādiṣṭā asmin dharmaḥ kathaṃ bhavet
6. How can righteousness (dharma) exist in this person, by whom Sītā was commanded to be searched for not out of fear of unrighteousness (adharma), but out of fear of Lakṣmaṇa?
तस्मिन्पापे कृतघ्ने तु स्मृतिहीने चलात्मनि ।
आर्यः को विश्वसेज्जातु तत् कुलीनो जिजीविषुः ॥७॥
7. tasminpāpe kṛtaghne tu smṛtihīne calātmani ,
āryaḥ ko viśvasejjātu tat kulīno jijīviṣuḥ.
7. tasmin pāpe kṛtaghne tu smṛtihīne calātmani
āryaḥ kaḥ viśvaset jātu tat kulīnaḥ jijīviṣuḥ
7. tu kaḥ āryaḥ tat jijīviṣuḥ kulīnaḥ vā tasmin
pāpe kṛtaghne smṛtihīne calātmani jātu viśvaset
7. Indeed, who among noble persons, or even among his own kin (kulīna) who desire to live, would ever trust that sinful, ungrateful, forgetful, and fickle-minded individual (calātman)?
राज्ये पुत्रं प्रतिष्ठाप्य सगुणो निर्गुणो ऽपि वा ।
कथं शत्रुकुलीनं मां सुग्रीवो जीवयिष्यति ॥८॥
8. rājye putraṃ pratiṣṭhāpya saguṇo nirguṇo'pi vā ,
kathaṃ śatrukulīnaṃ māṃ sugrīvo jīvayiṣyati.
8. rājye putraṃ pratiṣṭhāpya saguṇaḥ nirguṇaḥ api
vā kathaṃ śatru-kulīnaṃ māṃ sugrīvaḥ jīvayiṣyati

8. Having established his son in the kingdom, whether he (Sugrīva) possesses good qualities or not, how will Sugrīva keep me, who belong to an enemy's family, alive?
भिन्नमन्त्रो ऽपराद्धश्च हीनशक्तिः कथं ह्यहम् ।
किष्किन्धां प्राप्य जीवेयमनाथ इव दुर्बलः ॥९॥
9. bhinnamantro'parāddhaśca hīnaśaktiḥ kathaṃ hyaham ,
kiṣkindhāṃ prāpya jīveyamanātha iva durbalaḥ.
9. bhinnamantraḥ aparāddhaḥ ca hīnaśaktiḥ katham hi
aham kiṣkindhām prāpya jīveyam anāthaḥ iva durbalaḥ
9. aham bhinnamantraḥ aparāddhaḥ ca hīnaśaktiḥ durbalaḥ
anāthaḥ iva kiṣkindhām prāpya katham hi jīveyam
9. How indeed could I, with my plans thwarted, having committed a transgression, and deprived of power, survive in Kiṣkindhā, weak and helpless like an orphan?
उपांशुदण्डेन हि मां बन्धनेनोपपादयेत् ।
शठः क्रूरो नृशंसश्च सुग्रीवो राज्यकारणात् ॥१०॥
10. upāṃśudaṇḍena hi māṃ bandhanenopapādayet ,
śaṭhaḥ krūro nṛśaṃsaśca sugrīvo rājyakāraṇāt.
10. upāṃśudaṇḍena hi mām bandhanena upapādayet
śaṭhaḥ krūraḥ nṛśaṃsaḥ ca sugrīvaḥ rājyakāraṇāt
10. hi śaṭhaḥ krūraḥ nṛśaṃsaḥ ca sugrīvaḥ rājyakāraṇāt
mām upāṃśudaṇḍena bandhanena upapādayet
10. For the deceitful, cruel, and ruthless Sugrīva would surely subject me to secret punishment and imprisonment for the sake of the kingdom.
बन्धनाच्चावसादान्मे श्रेयः प्रायोपवेशनम् ।
अनुजानीत मां सर्वे गृहान् गच्छन्तु वानराः ॥११॥
11. bandhanāccāvasādānme śreyaḥ prāyopaveśanam ,
anujānīta māṃ sarve gṛhān gacchantu vānarāḥ.
11. bandhanāt ca avasādāt me śreyaḥ prāyopaveśanam
anujānīta mām sarve gṛhān gacchantu vānarāḥ
11. bandhanāt ca avasādāt me prāyopaveśanam śreyaḥ
sarve vānarāḥ mām anujānīta gṛhān gacchantu
11. For me, the practice of fasting unto death (prāyopaveśana) is preferable to imprisonment and despair. All of you vanaras, permit me, and return to your homes.
अहं वः प्रतिजानामि न गमिष्याम्यहं पुरीम् ।
इहैव प्रायमासिष्ये श्रेयो मरणमेव मे ॥१२॥
12. ahaṃ vaḥ pratijānāmi na gamiṣyāmyahaṃ purīm ,
ihaiva prāyamāsiṣye śreyo maraṇameva me.
12. aham vaḥ pratijānāmi na gamiṣyāmi aham purīm
iha eva prāyam āsiṣye śreyaḥ maraṇam eva me
12. aham vaḥ pratijānāmi,
aham purīm na gamiṣyāmi iha eva prāyam āsiṣye; me maraṇam eva śreyaḥ
12. I declare to you all that I will not return to the city. Right here, I will undertake the fast unto death (prāya); for me, death itself is preferable.
अभिवादनपूर्वं तु राजा कुशलमेव च ।
वाच्यस्ततो यवीयान्मे सुग्रीवो वानरेश्वरः ॥१३॥
13. abhivādanapūrvaṃ tu rājā kuśalameva ca ,
vācyastato yavīyānme sugrīvo vānareśvaraḥ.
13. abhivādanapūrvam tu rājā kuśalam eva ca
vācyaḥ tataḥ yavīyān me sugrīvaḥ vānarēśvaraḥ
13. First, you should offer respectful salutations to the king and also inquire about his welfare. Then, my younger brother, Sugrīva, the lord of monkeys, should be addressed.
आरोग्यपूर्वं कुशलं वाच्या माता रुमा च मे ।
मातरं चैव मे तारामाश्वासयितुमर्हथ ॥१४॥
14. ārogyapūrvaṃ kuśalaṃ vācyā mātā rumā ca me ,
mātaraṃ caiva me tārāmāśvāsayitumarhatha.
14. ārōgyapūrvam kuśalam vācyā mātā rumā ca me
mātaram ca eva me tārām āśvāsayitum arhatha
14. You should inquire about the welfare of my mother Rumā, beginning with her health. And you must comfort my mother Tārā.
प्रकृत्या प्रियपुत्रा सा सानुक्रोशा तपस्विनी ।
विनष्टं मामिह श्रुत्वा व्यक्तं हास्यति जीवितम् ॥१५॥
15. prakṛtyā priyaputrā sā sānukrośā tapasvinī ,
vinaṣṭaṃ māmiha śrutvā vyaktaṃ hāsyati jīvitam.
15. prakṛtyā priyaputrā sā sānukrōśā tapasvinī
vinaṣṭam mām iha śrutvā vyaktam hāsyati jīvitam
15. By her very nature (prakṛti), she is fond of her son, compassionate, and a pious woman (tapasvinī). Upon hearing that I am destroyed here, she will surely abandon her life.
एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं वृद्धानप्यभिवाद्य च ।
संविवेशाङ्गदो भूमौ रुदन्दर्भेषु दुर्मनाः ॥१६॥
16. etāvaduktvā vacanaṃ vṛddhānapyabhivādya ca ,
saṃviveśāṅgado bhūmau rudandarbheṣu durmanāḥ.
16. ētāvat uktvā vacanam vṛddhān api abhivādya ca
samvivēśa aṅgadaḥ bhūmau rudan darbheṣu durmanāḥ
16. Having spoken these words and also saluted the elders, Aṅgada, with a heavy heart, sat down on the ground amidst the darbha (kuśa) grass, weeping.
तस्य संविशतस्तत्र रुदन्तो वानरर्षभाः ।
नयनेभ्यः प्रमुमुचुरुष्णं वै वारिदुःखिताः ॥१७॥
17. tasya saṃviśatastatra rudanto vānararṣabhāḥ ,
nayanebhyaḥ pramumucuruṣṇaṃ vai vāriduḥkhitāḥ.
17. tasya saṃviśataḥ tatra rudantaḥ vānararṣabhāḥ
nayanebhyaḥ pramumucuḥ uṣṇam vai vāri duḥkhitāḥ
17. As he (Angada) sat down there, the distressed chief monkeys, weeping, shed hot tears from their eyes.
सुग्रीवं चैव निन्दन्तः प्रशंसन्तश्च वालिनम् ।
परिवार्याङ्गदो सर्वे व्यवस्यन्प्रायमासितुम् ॥१८॥
18. sugrīvaṃ caiva nindantaḥ praśaṃsantaśca vālinam ,
parivāryāṅgado sarve vyavasyanprāyamāsitum.
18. sugrīvam ca eva nindantaḥ praśaṃsantaḥ ca vālinam
parivārya aṅgadaḥ sarve vyavasyan prāyam āsitum
18. Criticizing Sugriva and praising Valin, all of them, having surrounded Angada, resolved to undertake a fast unto death (prāya).
मतं तद्वालिपुत्रस्य विज्ञाय प्लवगर्षभाः ।
उपस्पृश्योदकं सर्वे प्राङ्मुखाः समुपाविशन् ।
दक्षिणाग्रेषु दर्भेषु उदक्तीरं समाश्रिताः ॥१९॥
19. mataṃ tadvāliputrasya vijñāya plavagarṣabhāḥ ,
upaspṛśyodakaṃ sarve prāṅmukhāḥ samupāviśan ,
dakṣiṇāgreṣu darbheṣu udaktīraṃ samāśritāḥ.
19. matam tat vāliputrasya vijñāya
plavagarṣabhāḥ upaspṛśya udakam sarve
prāṅmukhāḥ samupāviśan dakṣiṇāgreṣu
darbheṣu udaktīram samāśritāḥ
19. Having understood that intention of Valin's son (Angada), all the chief monkeys, having purified themselves with water, sat down facing east, resorting to the northern bank upon darbha grass with tips pointing south.
स संविशद्भिर्बहुभिर्महीधरो
महाद्रिकूटप्रमितैः प्लवंगमैः ॥२०॥
20. sa saṃviśadbhirbahubhirmahīdharo
mahādrikūṭapramitaiḥ plavaṃgamaiḥ.
20. sa saṃviśadbhiḥ bahubhiḥ mahīdharaḥ
mahādrikūṭapramitaiḥ plavaṅgamaiḥ
20. He (Angada), appearing like a great mountain, was with many monkeys sitting down, who were themselves comparable to vast mountain peaks.
बभूव संनादितनिर्झरान्तरो
भृशं नदद्भिर्जलदैरिवोल्बणैः ॥२१॥
21. babhūva saṃnāditanirjharāntaro
bhṛśaṃ nadadbhirjaladairivolbaṇaiḥ.

nadadbhiḥ jaladaiḥ iva ulbaṇaiḥ

21. Its interior, resounding with the sound of waterfalls, became exceedingly loud, as if from the fierce roaring of mighty clouds.
