कृतोद्वाहे गते तस्मिन्ब्रह्मदत्ते च राघव ।
अपुत्रः पुत्रलाभाय पौत्रीमिष्टिमकल्पयत् ॥१॥

1. O Rāghava, after Brahmadatta had departed, having concluded his marriage, (Kuśanābha), being childless, performed a sacrifice to obtain a grandson.
इष्ट्यां तु वर्तमानायां कुशनाभं महीपतिम् ।
उवाच परमप्रीतः कुशो ब्रह्मसुतस्तदा ॥२॥
2. iṣṭyāṃ tu vartamānāyāṃ kuśanābhaṃ mahīpatim ,
uvāca paramaprītaḥ kuśo brahmasutastadā.

2. Then, while the sacrifice (iṣṭi) was ongoing, Kuśa, the son of Brahmā, highly pleased, spoke to King Kuśanābha.
पुत्रस्ते सदृशः पुत्र भविष्यति सुधार्मिकः ।
गाधिं प्राप्स्यसि तेन त्वं कीर्तिं लोके च शाश्वतीम् ॥३॥
3. putraste sadṛśaḥ putra bhaviṣyati sudhārmikaḥ ,
gādhiṃ prāpsyasi tena tvaṃ kīrtiṃ loke ca śāśvatīm.
3. putraḥ te sadṛśaḥ putra bhaviṣyati sudhārmikaḥ
gādhim prāpsyasi tena tvam kīrtim loke ca śāśvatīm
3. putra,
te sadṛśaḥ sudhārmikaḥ putra bhaviṣyati.
tvam tena gādhim (ca) loke śāśvatīm kīrtim prāpsyasi
3. O son, you will have a son just like yourself, who will be exceedingly righteous. You will beget Gādhi, and through him you will attain eternal fame in the world.
एवमुक्त्वा कुशो राम कुशनाभं महीपतिम् ।
जगामाकाशमाविश्य ब्रह्मलोकं सनातनम् ॥४॥
4. evamuktvā kuśo rāma kuśanābhaṃ mahīpatim ,
jagāmākāśamāviśya brahmalokaṃ sanātanam.

jagāma ākāśam āviśya brahmalokam sanātanam
4. rāma,
evam mahīpatim kuśanābham uktvā,
kuśaḥ ākāśam āviśya sanātanam brahmalokam jagāma
4. Having spoken thus to King Kuśanābha, Kuśa (O Rāma), having entered the sky, went to the eternal abode of Brahmā (brahmaloka).
कस्य चित्त्वथ कालस्य कुशनाभस्य धीमतः ।
जज्ञे परमधर्मिष्ठो गाधिरित्येव नामतः ॥५॥
5. kasya cittvatha kālasya kuśanābhasya dhīmataḥ ,
jajñe paramadharmiṣṭho gādhirityeva nāmataḥ.
5. kasya cit tu atha kālasya kuśanābhasya dhīmataḥ
jajñe paramadharmiṣṭhaḥ gādhiḥ iti eva nāmataḥ
5. atha kasya cit kālasya tu dhīmataḥ kuśanābhasya

5. Then, after some time, an exceedingly righteous son was born to the intelligent Kuśanābha, by the very name of Gādhi.
स पिता मम काकुत्स्थ गाधिः परमधार्मिकः ।
कुशवंशप्रसूतो ऽस्मि कौशिको रघुनन्दन ॥६॥
6. sa pitā mama kākutstha gādhiḥ paramadhārmikaḥ ,
kuśavaṃśaprasūto'smi kauśiko raghunandana.
6. saḥ pitā mama kākutstha gādhiḥ paramadhārmikaḥ
kuśavaṃśaprasūtaḥ asmi kauśikaḥ raghunandana
6. kākutstha raghunandana mama pitā saḥ gādhiḥ
paramadhārmikaḥ (aham) kuśavaṃśaprasūtaḥ kauśikaḥ asmi
6. O Kakutstha, my father is Gadhi, who is extremely righteous (paramadhārmika). O delight of the Raghu dynasty, I am a Kaushika, born in the lineage of Kuśa.
पूर्वजा भगिनी चापि मम राघव सुव्रता ।
नाम्ना सत्यवती नाम ऋचीके प्रतिपादिता ॥७॥
7. pūrvajā bhaginī cāpi mama rāghava suvratā ,
nāmnā satyavatī nāma ṛcīke pratipāditā.

nāmnā satyavatī nāma ṛcīke pratipāditā

7. O Raghava, my elder sister, of noble vows (suvrātā), named Satyavatī, was also given to Ṛcīka.
सशरीरा गता स्वर्गं भर्तारमनुवर्तिनी ।
कौशिकी परमोदारा सा प्रवृत्ता महानदी ॥८॥
8. saśarīrā gatā svargaṃ bhartāramanuvartinī ,
kauśikī paramodārā sā pravṛttā mahānadī.

8. bhartāram anuvartinī sā saśarīrā svargam

8. Following her husband, she ascended to heaven with her physical body. That same extremely generous (paramodārā) Kaushikī transformed into a great river.
दिव्या पुण्योदका रम्या हिमवन्तमुपाश्रिता ।
लोकस्य हितकामार्थं प्रवृत्ता भगिनी मम ॥९॥
9. divyā puṇyodakā ramyā himavantamupāśritā ,
lokasya hitakāmārthaṃ pravṛttā bhaginī mama.
9. divyā puṇyodakā ramyā himavantam upāśritā
lokasya hitakāmārtham pravṛttā bhaginī mama
9. mama bhaginī divyā puṇyodakā ramyā himavantam

9. Divine, with sacred (puṇya) waters, beautiful, and situated at the foot of the Himalayas, my sister flowed forth for the sake of the world's welfare.
ततो ऽहं हिमवत्पार्श्वे वसामि नियतः सुखम् ।
भगिन्याः स्नेहसंयुक्तः कौशिक्या रघुनन्दन ॥१०॥
10. tato'haṃ himavatpārśve vasāmi niyataḥ sukham ,
bhaginyāḥ snehasaṃyuktaḥ kauśikyā raghunandana.
10. tataḥ aham himavatpārśve vasāmi niyataḥ sukham
bhaginyāḥ snehasaṃyuktaḥ kauśikyā raghunandana
10. raghunandana tataḥ aham niyataḥ sukham himavatpārśve
vasāmi bhaginyāḥ kauśikyā snehasaṃyuktaḥ
10. Therefore, O Rama (raghunandana), I dwell happily and with self-restraint (niyata) on the slopes of the Himalayas, bound by affection for my sister Kauśikī.
सा तु सत्यवती पुण्या सत्ये धर्मे प्रतिष्ठिता ।
पतिव्रता महाभागा कौशिकी सरितां वरा ॥११॥
11. sā tu satyavatī puṇyā satye dharme pratiṣṭhitā ,
pativratā mahābhāgā kauśikī saritāṃ varā.
11. sā tu satyavatī puṇyā satye dharme pratiṣṭhitā
pativratā mahābhāgā kauśikī saritām varā
11. tu sā kauśikī satyavatī puṇyā satye dharme
pratiṣṭhitā pativratā mahābhāgā saritām varā
11. Indeed, that Kauśikī, named Satyavatī, is pure and steadfast in truth and in the natural law (dharma). She is a chaste wife, greatly fortunate, and the foremost among rivers.
अहं हि नियमाद् राम हित्वा तां समुपागतः ।
सिद्धाश्रममनुप्राप्य सिद्धो ऽस्मि तव तेजसा ॥१२॥
12. ahaṃ hi niyamād rāma hitvā tāṃ samupāgataḥ ,
siddhāśramamanuprāpya siddho'smi tava tejasā.
12. aham hi niyamāt rāma hitvā tām samupāgataḥ
siddhāśramam anuprāpya siddhaḥ asmi tava tejasā
12. rāma hi aham tām hitvā niyamāt samupāgataḥ
siddhāśramam anuprāpya tava tejasā siddhaḥ asmi
12. Indeed, O Rama, having left her (Kauśikī) due to a sacred observance (niyama), I came, and having reached Siddhashrama, I am now perfected (siddha) by your power.
एषा राम ममोत्पत्तिः स्वस्य वंशस्य कीर्तिता ।
देशस्य च महाबाहो यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ॥१३॥
13. eṣā rāma mamotpattiḥ svasya vaṃśasya kīrtitā ,
deśasya ca mahābāho yanmāṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi.
13. eṣā rāma mama utpattiḥ svasya vaṃśasya kīrtitā
deśasya ca mahābāho yat mām tvam paripṛcchasi
13. rāma mahābāho eṣā mama svasya vaṃśasya ca deśasya
utpattiḥ kīrtitā yat tvam mām paripṛcchasi
13. O Rama, O mighty-armed one, this (eṣā) is the account of my origin (utpatti) and that of my own lineage (vaṃśa), and also of the region, which has been recounted (kīrtitā) as you questioned me.
गतो ऽर्धरात्रः काकुत्स्थ कथाः कथयतो मम ।
निद्रामभ्येहि भद्रं ते मा भूद्विघ्नो ऽध्वनीह नः ॥१४॥
14. gato'rdharātraḥ kākutstha kathāḥ kathayato mama ,
nidrāmabhyehi bhadraṃ te mā bhūdvighno'dhvanīha naḥ.
14. gataḥ ardharātraḥ kākutstha kathāḥ kathayataḥ mama nidrām
abhyēhi bhadram te mā bhūt vighnaḥ adhvanī iha naḥ
14. kākutstha mama kathāḥ kathayataḥ ardharātraḥ gataḥ te
bhadram nidrām abhyēhi iha naḥ adhvanī vighnaḥ mā bhūt
14. O Kakutstha, half the night has passed as I was narrating stories. Please go to sleep; may you be well. May there be no obstacle to our journey here.
निष्पन्दास्तरवः सर्वे निलीना मृगपक्षिणः ।
नैशेन तमसा व्याप्ता दिशश्च रघुनन्दन ॥१५॥
15. niṣpandāstaravaḥ sarve nilīnā mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ ,
naiśena tamasā vyāptā diśaśca raghunandana.
15. niṣpandāḥ taravaḥ sarve nilīnāḥ mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ
naiśena tamasā vyāptāḥ diśaḥ ca raghunandana
15. raghunandana sarve taravaḥ niṣpandāḥ mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ
nilīnāḥ ca diśaḥ naiśena tamasā vyāptāḥ
15. All the trees are motionless, and the deer and birds are hidden. And, O scion of Raghu (Rama), the directions are covered by the darkness of night.
शनैर्वियुज्यते संध्या नभो नेत्रैरिवावृतम् ।
नक्षत्रतारागहनं ज्योतिर्भिरवभासते ॥१६॥
16. śanairviyujyate saṃdhyā nabho netrairivāvṛtam ,
nakṣatratārāgahanaṃ jyotirbhiravabhāsate.
16. śanaiḥ viyujyate saṃdhyā nabhaḥ netraiḥ iva
āvṛtam nakṣatratārāgahanaṃ jyotibhiḥ avabhāsate
16. saṃdhyā śanaiḥ viyujyate netraiḥ iva āvṛtam
nakṣatratārāgahanaṃ nabhaḥ jyotibhiḥ avabhāsate
16. Slowly, the twilight (saṃdhyā) departs. The sky, covered as if with countless eyes, dense with constellations and stars, shines brightly with its luminaries.
उत्तिष्ठति च शीतांशुः शशी लोकतमोनुदः ।
ह्लादयन्प्राणिनां लोके मनांसि प्रभया विभो ॥१७॥
17. uttiṣṭhati ca śītāṃśuḥ śaśī lokatamonudaḥ ,
hlādayanprāṇināṃ loke manāṃsi prabhayā vibho.
17. uttiṣṭhati ca śītāṃśuḥ śaśī lokatamonudaḥ
hlādayan prāṇinām loke manāṃsi prabhayā vibho
17. ca vibho lokatamonudaḥ śītāṃśuḥ śaśī loke
prāṇinām manāṃsi prabhayā hlādayan uttiṣṭhati
17. And the cool-rayed moon (śaśī) rises, dispelling the darkness of the world and gladdening the minds of beings (prāṇinām) in the world with its light, O Lord (vibho).
नैशानि सर्वभूतानि प्रचरन्ति ततस्ततः ।
यक्षराक्षससंघाश्च रौद्राश्च पिशिताशनाः ॥१८॥
18. naiśāni sarvabhūtāni pracaranti tatastataḥ ,
yakṣarākṣasasaṃghāśca raudrāśca piśitāśanāḥ.
18. naiśāni sarvabhūtāni pracaranti tatastataḥ
yakṣarākṣasasaṃghāḥ ca raudrāḥ ca piśitāśanāḥ
18. naiśāni sarvabhūtāni yakṣarākṣasasaṃghāḥ ca
raudrāḥ ca piśitāśanāḥ tatastataḥ pracaranti
18. All nocturnal creatures wander about here and there, as do hosts of Yakṣas and Rākṣasas, fierce beings, and flesh-eaters.
एवमुक्त्वा महातेजा विरराम महामुनिः ।
साधु साध्विति तं सर्वे मुनयो ह्यभ्यपूजयन् ॥१९॥
19. evamuktvā mahātejā virarāma mahāmuniḥ ,
sādhu sādhviti taṃ sarve munayo hyabhyapūjayan.
19. evam uktvā mahātejāḥ virarāma mahāmuṇiḥ sādhu
sādhu iti tam sarve munayaḥ hi abhyapūjayan
19. evam uktvā mahātejāḥ mahāmuṇiḥ virarāma sarve
munayaḥ hi tam sādhu sādhu iti abhyapūjayan
19. Having spoken thus, the immensely glorious great sage (mahāmuṇi) fell silent. All the sages (munayaḥ) then praised him, exclaiming, 'Excellent! Excellent!'
रामो ऽपि सह सौमित्रिः किं चिदागतविस्मयः ।
प्रशस्य मुनिशार्दूलं निद्रां समुपसेवते ॥२०॥
20. rāmo'pi saha saumitriḥ kiṃ cidāgatavismayaḥ ,
praśasya muniśārdūlaṃ nidrāṃ samupasevate.
20. rāmaḥ api saha saumitriḥ kim cit āgatavismayaḥ
praśasya muniśārdūlam nidrām samupasevate
20. rāmaḥ api saumitriḥ saha kim cit āgatavismayaḥ
muniśārdūlam praśasya nidrām samupasevate
20. Even Rama, along with Saumitra (Lakṣmaṇa), feeling a little surprised, praised the eminent sage and then prepared for sleep.
