अथ राजन्महाबाहुर्विचरन् स महीतलम् ।
हिमवद्वनमासाद्य परिचक्राम रावणः ॥१॥

1. Then, O King, that mighty-armed Ravana, while wandering the earth, reached the Himavat forest and roamed there.
तत्रापश्यत वै कन्यां कृष्टाजिनजटाधराम् ।
आर्षेण विधिना युक्तां तपन्तीं देवतामिव ॥२॥
2. tatrāpaśyata vai kanyāṃ kṛṣṭājinajaṭādharām ,
ārṣeṇa vidhinā yuktāṃ tapantīṃ devatāmiva.
2. tatra apaśyata vai kanyām kṛṣṭājinajaṭādharām
ārṣeṇa vidhinā yuktām tapantīm devatām iva

2. There, he saw a maiden, indeed, who wore a black deer-skin and matted hair, engaged in the ascetic practice (tapas) following a sage's custom (vidhi), appearing like a goddess.
स दृष्ट्वा रूपसंपन्नां कन्यां तां सुमहाव्रताम् ।
काममोहपरीतात्मा पप्रच्छ प्रहसन्निव ॥३॥
3. sa dṛṣṭvā rūpasaṃpannāṃ kanyāṃ tāṃ sumahāvratām ,
kāmamohaparītātmā papraccha prahasanniva.

3. He, whose mind (ātman) was overwhelmed by desire (kāma) and delusion (moha), saw that maiden, who was endowed with beauty and observed great vows, and he asked her, as if with a smile.
किमिदं वर्तसे भद्रे विरुद्धं यौवनस्य ते ।
न हि युक्ता तवैतस्य रूपस्येयं प्रतिक्रिया ॥४॥
4. kimidaṃ vartase bhadre viruddhaṃ yauvanasya te ,
na hi yuktā tavaitasya rūpasyeyaṃ pratikriyā.
4. kim idam vartase bhadre viruddham yauvanasya te
na hi yuktā tava etasya rūpasya iyam pratikriyā
4. bhadre,
kim idam te yauvanasya viruddham vartase? hi tava etasya rūpasya iyam pratikriyā na yuktā.
4. O gentle lady, why are you engaging in this (vow) that is contrary to your youth? Surely, such a practice is not fitting for your beauty.
कस्यासि दुहिता भद्रे को वा भर्ता तवानघे ।
पृच्छतः शंस मे शीघ्रं को वा हेतुस्तपोऽर्जने ॥५॥
5. kasyāsi duhitā bhadre ko vā bhartā tavānaghe ,
pṛcchataḥ śaṃsa me śīghraṃ ko vā hetustapo'rjane.
5. kasyāḥ asi duhitā bhadre kaḥ vā bhartā tava anaghe
pṛcchataḥ śaṃsa me śīghram kaḥ vā hetuḥ tapaḥ arjane
5. bhadre,
kasyāḥ duhitā asi? anaghe,
vā kaḥ tava bhartā? pṛcchataḥ me śīghram śaṃsa,
vā kaḥ tapaḥ arjane hetuḥ?
5. O gentle lady, whose daughter are you? Or, O faultless one, who is your husband? Tell me quickly, as I ask, what is the reason for undertaking these austerities (tapas)?
एवमुक्ता तु सा कन्या तेनानार्येण रक्षसा ।
अब्रवीद्विधिवत् कृत्वा तस्यातिथ्यं तपोधना ॥६॥
6. evamuktā tu sā kanyā tenānāryeṇa rakṣasā ,
abravīdvidhivat kṛtvā tasyātithyaṃ tapodhanā.
6. evam uktā tu sā kanyā tena anāryeṇa rakṣasā
abravīt vidhivat kṛtvā tasya ātithyam tapodhanā
6. tena anāryeṇa rakṣasā evam uktā tu sā kanyā,
tasya ātithyam विधिवत् कृत्वा,
तपोधना अब्रवीत्।
6. But that maiden, thus addressed by that ignoble demon (rakṣas), replied after properly offering him hospitality, for she was one whose wealth was her austerities (tapas).
कुशध्वजो नाम पिता ब्रह्मर्षिर्मम धार्मिकः ।
बृहस्पतिसुतः श्रीमान्बुद्ध्या तुल्यो बृहस्पतेः ॥७॥
7. kuśadhvajo nāma pitā brahmarṣirmama dhārmikaḥ ,
bṛhaspatisutaḥ śrīmānbuddhyā tulyo bṛhaspateḥ.
7. kuśadhvajaḥ nāma pitā brahmarṣiḥ mama dhārmikaḥ
bṛhaspatisutaḥ śrīmān buddhyā tulyaḥ bṛhaspateḥ
7. mama pitā kuśadhvajaḥ nāma dhārmikaḥ brahmarṣiḥ
bṛhaspatisutaḥ śrīmān buddhyā bṛhaspateḥ tulyaḥ
7. My father, named Kuśadhvaja, was a righteous brahmin sage, the glorious son of Bṛhaspati, and equal to Bṛhaspati in intellect.
तस्याहं कुर्वतो नित्यं वेदाभ्यासं महात्मनः ।
संभूता वान्मयी कन्या नाम्ना वेदवती स्मृता ॥८॥
8. tasyāhaṃ kurvato nityaṃ vedābhyāsaṃ mahātmanaḥ ,
saṃbhūtā vānmayī kanyā nāmnā vedavatī smṛtā.
8. tasya aham kurvataḥ nityam vedābhyāsam mahātmanaḥ
saṃbhūtā vāṅmayī kanyā nāmnā vedavatī smṛtā
8. aham tasya mahātmanaḥ nityam vedābhyāsam kurvataḥ
vāṅmayī kanyā nāmnā vedavatī smṛtā saṃbhūtā
8. From that great-souled father of mine, who was constantly engaged in Vedic study, I was born as a daughter embodying speech (vāṅmayī kanyā), known by the name Vedavatī.
ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वा यक्षराक्षसपन्नगाः ।
ते चापि गत्वा पितरं वरणं रोचयन्ति मे ॥९॥
9. tato devāḥ sagandharvā yakṣarākṣasapannagāḥ ,
te cāpi gatvā pitaraṃ varaṇaṃ rocayanti me.
9. tataḥ devāḥ sa-gandharvāḥ yakṣa-rākṣasa-pannagāḥ
te ca api gatvā pitaram varaṇam rocayanti me
9. tataḥ devāḥ sa-gandharvāḥ yakṣa-rākṣasa-pannagāḥ
te ca api pitaram gatvā me varaṇam rocayanti
9. Then the gods, accompanied by the gandharvas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and pannagas, all went to my father and sought my hand in marriage.
न च मां स पिता तेभ्यो दत्तवान् राक्षसेश्वर ।
कारणं तद्वदिष्यामि निशामय महाभुज ॥१०॥
10. na ca māṃ sa pitā tebhyo dattavān rākṣaseśvara ,
kāraṇaṃ tadvadiṣyāmi niśāmaya mahābhuja.
10. na ca mām saḥ pitā tebhyaḥ dattavān rākṣaseśvara
kāraṇam tat vadiṣyāmi niśāmaya mahābhuja
10. rākṣaseśvara mahābhuja,
saḥ pitā ca tebhyaḥ mām na dattavān.
tat kāraṇam vadiṣyāmi; niśāmaya.
10. And that father did not give me to them, O lord of rākṣasas. I will tell you that reason; listen, O mighty-armed one.
पितुस्तु मम जामाता विष्णुः किल सुरोत्तमः ।
अभिप्रेतस्त्रिलोकेशस्तस्मान्नान्यस्य मे पिताः ॥११॥
11. pitustu mama jāmātā viṣṇuḥ kila surottamaḥ ,
abhipretastrilokeśastasmānnānyasya me pitāḥ.
11. pituḥ tu mama jāmātā viṣṇuḥ kila surottamaḥ
abhipretaḥ trilokeśaḥ tasmāt na anyasya me pitāḥ
11. mama pituḥ tu jāmātā viṣṇuḥ kila surottamaḥ
trilokeśaḥ abhipretaḥ tasmāt me pitāḥ anyasya na
11. Indeed, my father's son-in-law is Vishnu, the best among gods, the lord of the three worlds, whom he desired. Therefore, my father would not consider anyone else.
दातुमिच्छति धर्मात्मा तच्छ्रुत्वा बलदर्पितः ।
शम्भुर्नाम ततो राजा दैत्यानां कुपितो ऽभवत् ।
तेन रात्रौ प्रसुप्तो मे पिता पापेन हिंसितः ॥१२॥
12. dātumicchati dharmātmā tacchrutvā baladarpitaḥ ,
śambhurnāma tato rājā daityānāṃ kupito'bhavat ,
tena rātrau prasupto me pitā pāpena hiṃsitaḥ.
12. dātum icchati dharmātmā tat śrutvā
baladarpitaḥ śambhuḥ nāma tataḥ rājā
daityānām kupitaḥ abhavat tena
rātrau prasuptaḥ me pitā pāpena hiṃsitaḥ
12. dharmātmā dātum icchati.
tat śrutvā baladarpitaḥ śambhuḥ nāma daityānām rājā tataḥ kupitaḥ abhavat.
tena pāpena me pitā rātrau prasuptaḥ hiṃsitaḥ.
12. My father, a righteous soul (dharmātmā), wished to give (her hand in marriage). Having heard this, Shambhu, the king of the demons (daityas), arrogant with power, became enraged. By that wicked one, my father was killed while asleep at night.
ततो मे जननी दीना तच्छरीरं पितुर्मम ।
परिष्वज्य महाभागा प्रविष्टा दहनं सह ॥१३॥
13. tato me jananī dīnā taccharīraṃ piturmama ,
pariṣvajya mahābhāgā praviṣṭā dahanaṃ saha.
13. tataḥ me jananī dīnā tat śarīram pituḥ mama
pariṣvajya mahābhāgā praviṣṭā dahanam saha
13. tataḥ me dīnā mahābhāgā jananī mama pituḥ
tat śarīram pariṣvajya saha dahanam praviṣṭā
13. Then my distressed mother, the highly virtuous one, having embraced the body of my father, entered the pyre with him.
ततो मनोरथं सत्यं पितुर्नारायणं प्रति ।
करोमीति ममेच्छा च हृदये साधु विष्ठिता ॥१४॥
14. tato manorathaṃ satyaṃ piturnārāyaṇaṃ prati ,
karomīti mamecchā ca hṛdaye sādhu viṣṭhitā.
14. tataḥ manoratham satyam pituḥ nārāyaṇam prati
karomi iti mama icchā ca hṛdaye sādhu viṣṭhitā
14. tataḥ mama icchā ca hṛdaye sādhu viṣṭhitā iti
pituḥ nārāyaṇam prati satyam manoratham karomi
14. Then, my desire is firmly established in my heart, thinking, 'I will fulfill my father's genuine wish concerning Narayana.'
अहं प्रेतगतस्यापि करिष्ये काङ्क्षितं पितुः ।
इति प्रतिज्ञामारुह्य चरामि विपुलं तपः ॥१५॥
15. ahaṃ pretagatasyāpi kariṣye kāṅkṣitaṃ pituḥ ,
iti pratijñāmāruhya carāmi vipulaṃ tapaḥ.
15. aham pretagatasya api kariṣye kāṅkṣitam pituḥ
iti pratijñām āruhya carāmi vipulam tapaḥ
15. I shall fulfill my father's wish, even for the deceased. Having undertaken this vow, I practice great austerity (tapas).
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं मया राक्षसपुंगव ।
आश्रितां विद्धि मां धर्मं नारायणपतीच्छया ॥१६॥
16. etatte sarvamākhyātaṃ mayā rākṣasapuṃgava ,
āśritāṃ viddhi māṃ dharmaṃ nārāyaṇapatīcchayā.
16. etat te sarvam ākhyātam mayā rākṣasapuṃgava
āśritām viddhi mām dharmam nārayaṇapatīcchayā
16. O best of rākṣasas, all this has been recounted by me to you. Know that I am devoted to my constitution (dharma) by the will of my husband, Nārāyaṇa.
विज्ञातस्त्वं हि मे राजन् गच्छ पौलस्त्यनन्दन ।
जानामि तपसा सर्वं त्रैलोक्ये यद्धि वर्तते ॥१७॥
17. vijñātastvaṃ hi me rājan gaccha paulastyanandana ,
jānāmi tapasā sarvaṃ trailokye yaddhi vartate.
17. vijñātaḥ tvam hi me rājan gaccha paulastyanandana
jānāmi tapasā sarvam trailokye yat hi vartate
17. Indeed, you are known to me, O King. Go, O son of Pulastya. By my austerity (tapas), I know everything that exists in the three worlds.
सो ऽब्रवीद् रावणस्तत्र तां कन्यां सुमहाव्रताम् ।
अवरुह्य विमानाग्रात् कन्दर्पशरपीडितः ॥१८॥
18. so'bravīd rāvaṇastatra tāṃ kanyāṃ sumahāvratām ,
avaruhya vimānāgrāt kandarpaśarapīḍitaḥ.
18. saḥ abravīt rāvaṇaḥ tatra tām kanyām sumahāvratām
avaruhya vimānāgrāt kandarpaśarapīḍitaḥ
18. There, Rāvaṇa, afflicted by the arrows of Kāmadeva, having descended from the top of his aerial chariot, spoke to that maiden of great vows.
अवलिप्तासि सुश्रोणि यस्यास्ते मतिरीदृशी ।
वृद्धानां मृगशावाक्षि भ्राजते धर्मसंचयः ॥१९॥
19. avaliptāsi suśroṇi yasyāste matirīdṛśī ,
vṛddhānāṃ mṛgaśāvākṣi bhrājate dharmasaṃcayaḥ.
19. avalipā asi suśroṇi yasyāḥ te matiḥ īdṛśī
vṛddhānām mṛgaśāvākṣi bhrājate dharmasaṃcayaḥ
19. suśroṇi avaliptā asi yasyāḥ te matiḥ īdṛśī
mṛgaśāvākṣi vṛddhānām dharmasaṃcayaḥ bhrājate
19. O lady of beautiful hips, you are conceited, for your understanding is of this kind. O fawn-eyed one, the amassed natural law (dharma) shines among the elders.
त्वं सर्वगुणसंपन्ना नार्हसे कर्तुमीदृशम् ।
त्रैलोक्यसुन्दरी भीरु यौवने वार्धकं विधिम् ॥२०॥
20. tvaṃ sarvaguṇasaṃpannā nārhase kartumīdṛśam ,
trailokyasundarī bhīru yauvane vārdhakaṃ vidhim.
20. tvam sarvaguṇasaṃpannā na arhase kartum īdṛśam
trailokyasundarī bhīru yauvane vārdhakam vidhim
20. tvam sarvaguṇasaṃpannā na arhase īdṛśam vārdhakam
vidhim yauvane kartum trailokyasundarī bhīru
20. You, adorned with all virtues, ought not to act in such a way. O most beautiful one of the three worlds, O timid lady, [you should not adopt] a practice suited for old age in your youth.
कश्च तावदसौ यं त्वं विष्णुरित्यभिभाषसे ।
वीर्येण तपसा चैव भोगेन च बलेन च ।
न मयासौ समो भद्रे यं त्वं कामयसे ऽङ्गने ॥२१॥
21. kaśca tāvadasau yaṃ tvaṃ viṣṇurityabhibhāṣase ,
vīryeṇa tapasā caiva bhogena ca balena ca ,
na mayāsau samo bhadre yaṃ tvaṃ kāmayase'ṅgane.
21. kaḥ ca tāvat asau yam tvam viṣṇuḥ
iti abhibhāṣase vīryeṇa tapasā ca eva
bhogena ca balena ca na mayā asau
samaḥ bhadre yam tvam kāmayase aṅgane
21. bhadre aṅgane,
tvam yam viṣṇuḥ iti abhibhāṣase,
asau tāvat kaḥ ca? asau mayā vīryeṇa tapasā ca eva bhogena ca balena ca na samaḥ,
yam tvam kāmayase.
21. Who indeed is that whom you refer to as Viṣṇu? He is not equal to me in valor, asceticism (tapas), enjoyment, or strength, O auspicious lady, whom you desire, O woman.
म मैवमिति सा कन्या तमुवाच निशाचरम् ।
मूर्धजेषु च तां रक्षः कराग्रेण परामृशत् ॥२२॥
22. ma maivamiti sā kanyā tamuvāca niśācaram ,
mūrdhajeṣu ca tāṃ rakṣaḥ karāgreṇa parāmṛśat.
22. ma mā evam iti sā kanyā tam uvāca niśācaram
mūrdhajeṣu ca tām rakṣaḥ karāgreṇa parāmṛśat
22. sā kanyā tam niśācaram "ma mā evam" iti uvāca.
ca rakṣaḥ karāgreṇa tām mūrdhajeṣu parāmṛśat.
22. That maiden said to the night-wanderer (niśācara), "No, by no means!" And the demon then seized her by the hair with the tip of his hand.
ततो वेदवती क्रुद्धा केशान् हस्तेन साच्छिनत् ।
उवाचाग्निं समाधाय मरणाय कृतत्वरा ॥२३॥
23. tato vedavatī kruddhā keśān hastena sācchinat ,
uvācāgniṃ samādhāya maraṇāya kṛtatvarā.
23. tataḥ vedavatī kruddhā keśān hastena sācchinat
uvāca agnim samādhāya maraṇāya kṛtatvarā
23. tataḥ kruddhā vedavatī hastena keśān sācchinat
agnim samādhāya maraṇāya kṛtatvarā uvāca
23. Then, enraged, Vedavati cut off her hair with her hand. Having concentrated on the fire and eager to embrace death, she spoke.
धर्षितायास्त्वयानार्य नेदानीं मम जीवितम् ।
रक्षस्तस्मात् प्रवेक्ष्यामि पश्यतस्ते हुताशनम् ॥२४॥
24. dharṣitāyāstvayānārya nedānīṃ mama jīvitam ,
rakṣastasmāt pravekṣyāmi paśyataste hutāśanam.
24. dharṣitāyāḥ tvayā anārya na idānīm mama jīvitam
rakṣaḥ tasmāt pravekṣyāmi paśyataḥ te hutāśanam
24. anārya tvayā dharṣitāyāḥ mama jīvitam idānīm na
rakṣaḥ tasmāt te paśyataḥ hutāśanam pravekṣyāmi
24. O ignoble one, by you I have been violated, so my life is no longer worth living. Therefore, O demon, I will enter the fire while you watch.
यस्मात्तु धर्षिता चाहमपापा चाप्यनाथवत् ।
तस्मात्तव वधार्थं वै समुत्पत्स्याम्यहं पुनः ॥२५॥
25. yasmāttu dharṣitā cāhamapāpā cāpyanāthavat ,
tasmāttava vadhārthaṃ vai samutpatsyāmyahaṃ punaḥ.
25. yasmāt tu dharṣitā ca aham apāpā ca api anāthavat
tasmāt tava vadhārtham vai samutpatsyāmi aham punaḥ
25. yasmāt tu aham dharṣitā ca apāpā ca api anāthavat
tasmāt aham punaḥ tava vadhārtham vai samutpatsyāmi
25. Since I have been violated, and am innocent and helpless like one without a protector, therefore, I shall certainly be born again for your destruction.
न हि शक्यः स्त्रिया पाप हन्तुं त्वं तु विशेषतः ।
शापे त्वयि मयोत्सृष्टे तपसश्च व्ययो भवेत् ॥२६॥
26. na hi śakyaḥ striyā pāpa hantuṃ tvaṃ tu viśeṣataḥ ,
śāpe tvayi mayotsṛṣṭe tapasaśca vyayo bhavet.
26. na hi śakyaḥ striyā pāpa hantum tvam tu viśeṣataḥ
śāpe tvayi mayā utsṛṣṭe tapasaḥ ca vyayaḥ bhavet
26. pāpa hi tvam striyā hantum na śakyaḥ tu viśeṣataḥ
ca tvayi mayā śāpe utsṛṣṭe tapasaḥ vyayaḥ bhavet
26. Indeed, it is not possible for you to be killed by a woman, O wicked one, especially not in this manner. Furthermore, if a curse were to be uttered by me upon you, there would be a loss of my ascetic merit (tapas).
यदि त्वस्ति मया किं चित् कृतं दत्तं हुतं तथा ।
तेन ह्ययोनिजा साध्वी भवेयं धर्मिणः सुता ॥२७॥
27. yadi tvasti mayā kiṃ cit kṛtaṃ dattaṃ hutaṃ tathā ,
tena hyayonijā sādhvī bhaveyaṃ dharmiṇaḥ sutā.
27. yadi tu asti mayā kim cit kṛtam dattam hutam tathā
tena hi ayonijā sādhvī bhaveyam dharmiṇaḥ sutā
27. yadi tu mayā kim cit kṛtam dattam hutam tathā asti,
tena hi dharmiṇaḥ ayonijā sādhvī sutā bhaveyam
27. If anything at all has truly been performed, given, or offered by me, then through that merit, may I indeed be born not from a womb (ayoṇijā), a virtuous daughter of a man devoted to natural law (dharma).
एवमुक्त्वा प्रविष्टा सा ज्वलन्तं वै हुताशनम् ।
पपात च दिवो दिव्या पुष्पवृष्टिः समन्ततः ॥२८॥
28. evamuktvā praviṣṭā sā jvalantaṃ vai hutāśanam ,
papāta ca divo divyā puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ samantataḥ.
28. evam uktvā praviṣṭā sā jvalantam vai hutāśanam
papāta ca divaḥ divyā puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ samantataḥ
28. sā evam uktvā jvalantam hutāśanam vai praviṣṭā
ca divaḥ divyā puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ samantataḥ papāta
28. Having spoken thus, she indeed entered the blazing fire. And from the sky, a divine shower of flowers fell all around.
पूर्वं क्रोधहतः शत्रुर्ययासौ निहतस्त्वया ।
समुपाश्रित्य शैलाभं तव वीर्यममानुषम् ॥२९॥
29. pūrvaṃ krodhahataḥ śatruryayāsau nihatastvayā ,
samupāśritya śailābhaṃ tava vīryamamānuṣam.
29. pūrvam krodhahataḥ śatruḥ yayā asau nihataḥ
tvayā samupāśritya śailābham tava vīryam amānuṣam
29. pūrvam krodhahataḥ śatruḥ,
yayā asau tvayā nihataḥ,
[tvam] tava śailābham amānuṣam vīryam samupāśritya
29. Previously, the enemy who was overcome by wrath was slain by you through that (divine) power (śakti), by resorting to your mountain-like, superhuman prowess.
एवमेषा महाभागा मर्त्येषूत्पद्यते पुनः ।
क्षेत्रे हलमुखग्रस्ते वेद्यामग्निशिखोपमा ॥३०॥
30. evameṣā mahābhāgā martyeṣūtpadyate punaḥ ,
kṣetre halamukhagraste vedyāmagniśikhopamā.
30. evam eṣā mahābhāgā martyeṣu utpadyate punaḥ
kṣetre halamukhagraste vedyām agniśikhopamā
30. evam eṣā mahābhāgā agniśikhopamā punaḥ martyeṣu
kṣetre halamukhagraste vedyām utpadyate
30. Thus, this highly fortunate one (mahābhāgā) is born again among mortals, resembling a flame of fire on an altar (vedī) in a field furrowed by the ploughshare.
एषा वेदवती नाम पूर्वमासीत् कृते युगे ।
त्रेतायुगमनुप्राप्य वधार्थं तस्य रक्षसः ।
सीतोत्पन्नेति सीतैषा मानुषैः पुनरुच्यते ॥३१॥
31. eṣā vedavatī nāma pūrvamāsīt kṛte yuge ,
tretāyugamanuprāpya vadhārthaṃ tasya rakṣasaḥ ,
sītotpanneti sītaiṣā mānuṣaiḥ punarucyate.

yuge tretāyugam anuprapya vadhārtham
tasya rakṣasaḥ sītā utpannā
iti sītā eṣā mānuṣaiḥ punaḥ ucyate

āsīt tretāyugam anuprapya tasya
rakṣasaḥ vadhārtham sītā utpannā
iti eṣā sītā punaḥ mānuṣaiḥ ucyate
31. This woman, named Vedavatī, existed formerly in the Kṛta age (yuga). When the Tretā age (yuga) arrived, for the purpose of slaying that demon (rākṣasa), she was born as Sītā. Therefore, this Sītā is again referred to as Sītā by humans.
