सर्वे ते त्वरितं गत्वा किष्किन्धां वालिपालिताम् ।
वृक्षैरात्मानमावृत्य व्यतिष्ठन् गहने वने ॥१॥
1. sarve te tvaritaṃ gatvā kiṣkindhāṃ vālipālitām ,

1. All of them, having quickly gone to Kishkindha, which was protected by Vali, concealed themselves among the trees and remained in the dense forest.
विचार्य सर्वतो दृष्टिं कानने काननप्रियः ।
सुग्रीवो विपुलग्रीवः क्रोधमाहारयद्भृशम् ॥२॥
2. vicārya sarvato dṛṣṭiṃ kānane kānanapriyaḥ ,
sugrīvo vipulagrīvaḥ krodhamāhārayadbhṛśam.

2. The broad-necked (vipulagrīva) Sugriva, who was fond of forests (kānanapriya), cast his gaze all around the forest, and then intensely felt anger (krodha).
ततः स निनदं घोरं कृत्वा युद्धाय चाह्वयत् ।
परिवारैः परिवृतो नादैर्भिन्दन्निवाम्बरम् ॥३॥
3. tataḥ sa ninadaṃ ghoraṃ kṛtvā yuddhāya cāhvayat ,
parivāraiḥ parivṛto nādairbhindannivāmbaram.
3. tataḥ saḥ ninadam ghoram kṛtvā yuddhāya ca āhvayat
parivāraiḥ parivṛtaḥ nādaiḥ bhindan iva ambaram

3. Then, surrounded by his retinue, he (Sugriva) let out a terrible roar, as if splitting the sky with his sounds, and challenged (Vali) to battle.
अथ बालार्कसदृशो दृप्तसिंहगतिस्तदा ।
दृष्ट्वा रामं क्रियादक्षं सुग्रीवो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. atha bālārkasadṛśo dṛptasiṃhagatistadā ,
dṛṣṭvā rāmaṃ kriyādakṣaṃ sugrīvo vākyamabravīt.

4. Then, Sugriva, resembling the rising sun and with the gait of a proud lion, having seen Rama who was skilled in action, spoke these words.
हरिवागुरया व्याप्तं तप्तकाञ्चनतोरणाम् ।
प्राप्ताः स्म ध्वजयन्त्राढ्यां किष्किन्धां वालिनः पुरीम् ॥५॥
5. harivāgurayā vyāptaṃ taptakāñcanatoraṇām ,
prāptāḥ sma dhvajayantrāḍhyāṃ kiṣkindhāṃ vālinaḥ purīm.

5. We have arrived at Kishkindha, the city of Vali, which is teeming with monkeys, adorned with arches of shining gold, and rich with banners and mechanical devices.
प्रतिज्ञा या त्वया वीर कृता वालिवधे पुरा ।
सफलां तां कुरु क्षिप्रं लतां काल इवागतः ॥६॥
6. pratijñā yā tvayā vīra kṛtā vālivadhe purā ,
saphalāṃ tāṃ kuru kṣipraṃ latāṃ kāla ivāgataḥ.
6. pratijñā yā tvayā vīra kṛtā vālivadhe purā
saphalām tām kuru kṣipram latām kālaḥ iva āgataḥ
6. vīra yā pratijñā tvayā purā vālivadhe kṛtā,
tām saphalām kṣipram kuru,
kālaḥ latām iva āgataḥ
6. O hero, quickly fulfill that promise which you made previously regarding the slaying of Vali, just as the proper time (kāla) causes a creeper to bear fruit.
एवमुक्तस्तु धर्मात्मा सुग्रीवेण स राघवः ।
तमथोवाच सुग्रीवं वचनं शत्रुसूदनः ॥७॥
7. evamuktastu dharmātmā sugrīveṇa sa rāghavaḥ ,
tamathovāca sugrīvaṃ vacanaṃ śatrusūdanaḥ.
7. evam uktaḥ tu dharmātmā sugrīveṇa saḥ rāghavaḥ
tam atha uvāca sugrīvam vacanam śatrusūdanaḥ
7. sugrīveṇa evam uktaḥ tu saḥ dharmātmā śatrusūdanaḥ
rāghavaḥ atha tam sugrīvam vacanam uvāca
7. When Sugrīva had thus spoken, the righteous (dharma) Rāma, the slayer of enemies, then said these words to Sugrīva.
कृताभिज्ञान चिह्नस्त्वमनया गजसाह्वया ।
विपरीत इवाकाशे सूर्यो नक्षत्र मालया ॥८॥
8. kṛtābhijñāna cihnastvamanayā gajasāhvayā ,
viparīta ivākāśe sūryo nakṣatra mālayā.
8. kṛta abhijñāna cihnaḥ tvam anayā gajasāhvayā
viparīta iva ākāśe sūryaḥ nakṣatra mālayā
8. tvam anayā gajasāhvayā kṛta abhijñāna cihnaḥ (bhaviṣyasi),
ākāśe nakṣatra mālayā viparīta iva sūryaḥ (iva)
8. You (Sugrīva) will be furnished with distinguishing marks by her (Sītā), whose majestic gait resembles that of an elephant, just as the sun appears unusually in the sky accompanied by a garland of constellations.
अद्य वालिसमुत्थं ते भयं वैरं च वानर ।
एकेनाहं प्रमोक्ष्यामि बाणमोक्षेण संयुगे ॥९॥
9. adya vālisamutthaṃ te bhayaṃ vairaṃ ca vānara ,
ekenāhaṃ pramokṣyāmi bāṇamokṣeṇa saṃyuge.
9. adya vālisamutthám te bhayam vairam ca vānara
ekena aham pramokṣyāmi bāṇamokṣeṇa saṃyuge
9. vānara,
adya aham ekena bāṇamokṣeṇa saṃyuge te vālisamutthám bhayam ca vairam pramokṣyāmi
9. O Vanara (Sugrīva), today I will free you from the fear and enmity caused by Vālī, by releasing just one arrow in battle.
मम दर्शय सुग्रीववैरिणं भ्रातृरूपिणम् ।
वाली विनिहतो यावद्वने पांसुषु वेष्टते ॥१०॥
10. mama darśaya sugrīvavairiṇaṃ bhrātṛrūpiṇam ,
vālī vinihato yāvadvane pāṃsuṣu veṣṭate.
10. mama darśaya sugrīvavairiṇam bhrātṛrūpiṇam
vālī vinihataḥ yāvat vane pāṃsuṣu veṣṭate
10. mama sugrīvavairiṇam bhrātṛrūpiṇam (vālim) darśaya,
yāvat vālī vinihataḥ (san) vane pāṃsuṣu veṣṭate
10. Show to me Sugrīva's enemy, who takes the guise of a brother, so that Vālī, when struck down, will roll in the dust in the forest.
यदि दृष्टिपथं प्राप्तो जीवन् स विनिवर्तते ।
ततो दोषेण मा गच्छेत् सद्यो गर्हेच्च मा भवान् ॥११॥
11. yadi dṛṣṭipathaṃ prāpto jīvan sa vinivartate ,
tato doṣeṇa mā gacchet sadyo garhecca mā bhavān.
11. yadi dṛṣṭipatham prāptaḥ jīvan saḥ vinivartate
tataḥ doṣeṇa mā gacchet sadyaḥ garhet ca mā bhavān
11. yadi saḥ jīvan dṛṣṭipatham prāptaḥ vinivartate
tataḥ doṣeṇa mā gacchet ca bhavān sadyaḥ mā garhet
11. If, having come into sight, he returns alive, then may I not incur any fault, and may your honor not blame me immediately.
प्रत्यक्षं सप्त ते साला मया बाणेन दारिताः ।
ततो वेत्सि बलेनाद्य बालिनं निहतं मया ॥१२॥
12. pratyakṣaṃ sapta te sālā mayā bāṇena dāritāḥ ,
tato vetsi balenādya bālinaṃ nihataṃ mayā.
12. pratyakṣam sapta te sālāḥ mayā bāṇena dāritāḥ
tataḥ vetsi balena adya bālinaṃ nihataṃ mayā
12. te sapta sālāḥ mayā bāṇena pratyakṣam dāritāḥ
tataḥ adya mayā balena bālinaṃ nihataṃ vetsi
12. You have seen directly how those seven sāla trees were pierced by me with an arrow. Therefore, today you know that Bali was killed by me through my strength.
अनृतं नोक्तपूर्वं मे वीर कृच्छ्रे ऽपि तिष्ठता ।
धर्मलोभपरीतेन न च वक्ष्ये कथं चन ॥१३॥
13. anṛtaṃ noktapūrvaṃ me vīra kṛcchre'pi tiṣṭhatā ,
dharmalobhaparītena na ca vakṣye kathaṃ cana.
13. anṛtam na uktapūrvam me vīra kṛcchre api tiṣṭhatā
dharmalobhaparītena na ca vakṣye katham cana
13. vīra me anṛtam kṛcchre api tiṣṭhatā na uktapūrvam
ca dharmalobhaparītena katham cana na vakṣye
13. O hero, I have never spoken an untruth, not even when I was in distress. Nor will I ever speak one, being overcome by greed for material gain (dharma).
सफलां च करिष्यामि प्रतिज्ञां जहि संभ्रमम् ।
प्रसूतं कलमं क्षेत्रे वर्षेणेव शतक्रतुः ॥१४॥
14. saphalāṃ ca kariṣyāmi pratijñāṃ jahi saṃbhramam ,
prasūtaṃ kalamaṃ kṣetre varṣeṇeva śatakratuḥ.
14. saphalām ca kariṣyāmi pratijñām jahi saṃbhramam
prasūtam kalamam kṣetre varṣeṇa iva śatakratuḥ
14. ca (aham) pratijñām saphalām kariṣyāmi saṃbhramam
jahi śatakratuḥ iva varṣeṇa kṣetre prasūtam kalamam
14. And I shall make my pledge (pratijñā) fruitful, so abandon your apprehension. (I will do this) just as Śatakratu (Indra) causes the ripened rice (kalama) in the field to yield its produce by means of rain.
तदाह्वाननिमित्तं त्वं वालिनो हेममालिनः ।
सुग्रीव कुरु तं शब्दं निष्पतेद् येन वानरः ॥१५॥
15. tadāhvānanimittaṃ tvaṃ vālino hemamālinaḥ ,
sugrīva kuru taṃ śabdaṃ niṣpated yena vānaraḥ.
15. tadāhvāna-nimittam tvam vālinaḥ hema-mālinaḥ
sugrīva kuru tam śabdam niṣpatet yena vānaraḥ
15. sugrīva tvam vālinaḥ hema-mālinaḥ tadāhvāna-nimittam
tam śabdam kuru yena vānaraḥ niṣpatet
15. Sugriva, in order to challenge Vali, the one adorned with a golden garland, utter that sound by which that monkey will rush out.
जितकाशी जयश्लाघी त्वया चाधर्षितः पुरात् ।
निष्पतिष्यत्यसंगेन वाली स प्रियसंयुगः ॥१६॥
16. jitakāśī jayaślāghī tvayā cādharṣitaḥ purāt ,
niṣpatiṣyatyasaṃgena vālī sa priyasaṃyugaḥ.
16. jita-kāśī jaya-ślāghī tvayā ca adharṣitaḥ purāt
niṣpatiṣyati asaṅgena vālī saḥ priya-saṃyugaḥ
16. saḥ vālī jita-kāśī jaya-ślāghī tvayā ca purāt
adharṣitaḥ priya-saṃyugaḥ asaṅgena niṣpatiṣyati
16. Vali, who boasts of victory and praises triumph, having been provoked by you previously, will rush out without hesitation, for he is fond of combat.
रिपूणां धर्षणं शूरा मर्षयन्ति न संयुगे ।
जानन्तस्तु स्वकं वीर्यं स्त्रीसमक्षं विशेषतः ॥१७॥
17. ripūṇāṃ dharṣaṇaṃ śūrā marṣayanti na saṃyuge ,
jānantastu svakaṃ vīryaṃ strīsamakṣaṃ viśeṣataḥ.
17. ripūṇām dharṣaṇam śūrāḥ marṣayanti na saṃyuge
jānantaḥ tu svakam vīryam strī-samakṣam viśeṣataḥ
17. tu śūrāḥ ripūṇām dharṣaṇam saṃyuge na marṣayanti
svakam vīryam jānantaḥ viśeṣataḥ strī-samakṣam
17. Indeed, heroes do not tolerate the insult of enemies in combat, especially when they know their own strength and are in the presence of women.
स तु रामवचः श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवो हेमपिङ्गलः ।
ननर्द क्रूरनादेन विनिर्भिन्दन्निवाम्बरम् ॥१८॥
18. sa tu rāmavacaḥ śrutvā sugrīvo hemapiṅgalaḥ ,
nanarda krūranādena vinirbhindannivāmbaram.
18. saḥ tu rāma-vacaḥ śrutvā sugrīvaḥ hema-piṅgalaḥ
nanarda krūra-nādena vinirbhindan iva ambaram
18. tu saḥ hema-piṅgalaḥ sugrīvaḥ rāma-vacaḥ śrutvā
krūra-nādena nanarda ambaram iva vinirbhindan
18. Indeed, upon hearing Rama's words, that golden-brown Sugriva roared with a fierce sound, as if tearing apart the sky.
तस्य शब्देन वित्रस्ता गावो यान्ति हतप्रभाः ।
राजदोषपरामृष्टाः कुलस्त्रिय इवाकुलाः ॥१९॥
19. tasya śabdena vitrastā gāvo yānti hataprabhāḥ ,
rājadoṣaparāmṛṣṭāḥ kulastriya ivākulāḥ.
19. tasya śabdena vitrastāḥ gāvaḥ yānti hataprabhāḥ
rājadoṣaparāmṛṣṭāḥ kulastriyaḥ iva akulāḥ
19. tasya śabdena vitrastāḥ hataprabhāḥ gāvaḥ
rājadoṣaparāmṛṣṭāḥ akulāḥ kulastriyaḥ iva yānti
19. Terrified by his roar, the cows flee, deprived of their luster, distressed like noble women afflicted by royal misdeeds.
द्रवन्ति च मृगाः शीघ्रं भग्ना इव रणे हयाः ।
पतन्ति च खगा भूमौ क्षीणपुण्या इव ग्रहाः ॥२०॥
20. dravanti ca mṛgāḥ śīghraṃ bhagnā iva raṇe hayāḥ ,
patanti ca khagā bhūmau kṣīṇapuṇyā iva grahāḥ.
20. dravanti ca mṛgāḥ śīghram bhagnāḥ iva raṇe hayāḥ
patanti ca khagāḥ bhūmau kṣīṇapuṇyāḥ iva grahāḥ
20. ca mṛgāḥ śīghram raṇe bhagnāḥ hayāḥ iva dravanti
ca khagāḥ bhūmau kṣīṇapuṇyāḥ grahāḥ iva patanti
20. And the deer quickly flee, like horses defeated in battle. And birds fall to the ground, like planets whose accumulated merit is exhausted.
ततः स जीमूतगणप्रणादो नादं व्यमुञ्चत्त्वरया प्रतीतः ।
सूर्यात्मजः शौर्यविवृद्धतेजाः सरित्पतिर्वानिलचञ्चलोर्मिः ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ sa jīmūtagaṇapraṇādo nādaṃ vyamuñcattvarayā pratītaḥ ,
sūryātmajaḥ śauryavivṛddhatejāḥ saritpatirvānilacañcalormiḥ.
21. tataḥ saḥ jīmūtaganapraṇādaḥ
nādam vyamuñcat tvarayā pratītaḥ
sūryātmajaḥ śauryavivṛddhatejāḥ
saritpatiḥ vā anilacañcalaūrmiḥ
21. tataḥ saḥ sūryātmajaḥ jīmūtaganapraṇādaḥ
pratītaḥ śauryavivṛddhatejāḥ
tvarayā nādam vyamuñcat
saritpatiḥ vā anilacañcalaūrmiḥ
21. Then, the son of Sūrya, whose roar was like the rumble of a cloud formation, confident and with his valor-enhanced splendor, quickly let out a cry, like the lord of rivers (the ocean) with waves made restless by the wind.
