विसृज्य लक्ष्मणं रामो दुःखशोकसमन्वितः ।
पुरोधसं मन्त्रिणश्च नैगमांश्चेदमब्रवीत् ॥१॥

1. Having dismissed Lakṣmaṇa, Rāma, filled with sorrow and grief, spoke this to the chief priest, the ministers, and the townspeople.
अद्य राज्ये ऽभिषेक्ष्यामि भरतं धर्मवत्सलम् ।
अयोध्यायां पतिं वीरं ततो यास्याम्यहं वनम् ॥२॥
2. adya rājye'bhiṣekṣyāmi bharataṃ dharmavatsalam ,
ayodhyāyāṃ patiṃ vīraṃ tato yāsyāmyahaṃ vanam.

ayodhyāyām patim vīram tataḥ yāsyāmi aham vanam

2. Today I shall enthrone Bharata, who is devoted to (dharma) and heroic, as the ruler in Ayodhya. Thereafter, I shall go to the forest.
प्रवेशयत संभारान्मा भूत् कालात्ययो यथा ।
अद्यैवाहं गमिष्यामि लक्ष्मणेन गतां गतिम् ॥३॥
3. praveśayata saṃbhārānmā bhūt kālātyayo yathā ,
adyaivāhaṃ gamiṣyāmi lakṣmaṇena gatāṃ gatim.

3. Bring in the provisions immediately, so that there is no delay. Today itself, I shall follow the path taken by Lakṣmaṇa.
तच्छ्रुत्वा राघवेणोक्तं सर्वाः प्रकृतयो भृशम् ।
मूर्धभिः प्रणता भूमौ गतसत्त्वा इवाभवन् ॥४॥
4. tacchrutvā rāghaveṇoktaṃ sarvāḥ prakṛtayo bhṛśam ,
mūrdhabhiḥ praṇatā bhūmau gatasattvā ivābhavan.
4. tat śrutvā rāghaveṇa uktam sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ bhṛśam

4. Having heard that which was spoken by Rāghava, all the subjects bowed down greatly to the ground with their heads, as if they had become bereft of spirit.
भरतश्च विसंज्ञो ऽभूच्छ्रुत्वा रामस्य भाषितम् ।
राज्यं विगर्हयामास राघवं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥५॥
5. bharataśca visaṃjño'bhūcchrutvā rāmasya bhāṣitam ,
rājyaṃ vigarhayāmāsa rāghavaṃ cedamabravīt.
5. bharataḥ ca visañjaḥ abhūt śrutvā rāmasya bhāṣitam
rājyam vigarhayām āsa rāghavam ca idam abravīt
5. bharataḥ ca rāmasya bhāṣitam śrutvā visañjaḥ abhūt

5. And Bharata became senseless upon hearing Rāma's words. He condemned the kingdom and spoke this to Rāghava (Rāma).
सत्येन हि शपे राजन् स्वर्गलोके न चैव हि ।
न कामये यथा राज्यं त्वां विना रघुनन्दन ॥६॥
6. satyena hi śape rājan svargaloke na caiva hi ,
na kāmaye yathā rājyaṃ tvāṃ vinā raghunandana.

6. Indeed, I swear by truth, O King, that I do not desire the kingdom without you, O delight of the Raghus, not even in the heavenly realm.
इमौ कुशीलवौ राजन्नभिषिञ्च नराधिप ।
कोसलेषु कुशं वीरमुत्तरेषु तथा लवम् ॥७॥
7. imau kuśīlavau rājannabhiṣiñca narādhipa ,
kosaleṣu kuśaṃ vīramuttareṣu tathā lavam.

kosaleṣu kuśam vīram uttareṣu tathā lavam

7. O King, O Lord of men, enthrone these two, Kuśa and Lava: the heroic Kuśa in Kosala, and similarly Lava in the northern regions.
शत्रुघ्नस्य तु गच्छन्तु दूतास्त्वरितविक्रमाः ।
इदं गमनमस्माकं स्वर्गायाख्यान्तु माचिरम् ॥८॥
8. śatrughnasya tu gacchantu dūtāstvaritavikramāḥ ,
idaṃ gamanamasmākaṃ svargāyākhyāntu māciram.
8. śatrughnasya tu gacchantu dūtāḥ tvaritavikramāḥ
idam gamanam asmākam svargāya ākhyāntu mā ciram
8. tu tvaritavikramāḥ dūtāḥ śatrughnasya gacchantu

8. Indeed, let swift-footed messengers go to Shatrughna. Let them announce this departure of ours to heaven without delay.
तच्छ्रुत्वा भरतेनोक्तं दृष्ट्वा चापि ह्यधो मुखान् ।
पौरान्दुःखेन संतप्तान् वसिष्ठो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. tacchrutvā bharatenoktaṃ dṛṣṭvā cāpi hyadho mukhān ,
paurānduḥkhena saṃtaptān vasiṣṭho vākyamabravīt.
9. tat śrutvā bharatena uktam dṛṣṭvā ca api hi adho mukhān
paurān duḥkhena saṃtaptān vasiṣṭhaḥ vākyam abravīt
9. bharatena uktam tat śrutvā ca api hi duḥkhena saṃtaptān
adho mukhān paurān dṛṣṭvā vasiṣṭhaḥ vākyam abravīt
9. Having heard what Bharata said, and seeing the citizens with their faces cast down, tormented by sorrow, Vasiṣṭha spoke.
वत्स राम इमाः पश्य धरणीं प्रकृतीर्गताः ।
ज्ञात्वैषामीप्सितं कार्यं मा चैषां विप्रियं कृथाः ॥१०॥
10. vatsa rāma imāḥ paśya dharaṇīṃ prakṛtīrgatāḥ ,
jñātvaiṣāmīpsitaṃ kāryaṃ mā caiṣāṃ vipriyaṃ kṛthāḥ.
10. vatsa rāma imāḥ paśya dharaṇīm prakṛtīḥ gatāḥ jñātvā
eṣām īpsitam kāryam mā ca eṣām vipriyam kṛthāḥ
10. vatsa rāma imāḥ dharaṇīm gatāḥ prakṛtīḥ paśya eṣām

10. My son, Rama, behold these subjects (prakṛti), who have fallen to the ground. Understand their desires, and do not do anything displeasing to them.
वसिष्ठस्य तु वाक्येन उत्थाप्य प्रकृतीजनम् ।
किं करोमीति काकुत्स्थः सर्वान् वचनमब्रवीत् ॥११॥
11. vasiṣṭhasya tu vākyena utthāpya prakṛtījanam ,
kiṃ karomīti kākutsthaḥ sarvān vacanamabravīt.
11. vasiṣṭhasya tu vākyena utthāpya prakṛtījanam
kim karomi iti kākutsthaḥ sarvān vacanam abravīt
11. tu vasiṣṭhasya vākyena prakṛtījanam utthāpya

11. Prompted by the words of Vasiṣṭha, and having raised the populace (prakṛti-jana), Rama (kākutstha) addressed everyone, saying, 'What shall I do?'
ततः सर्वाः प्रकृतयो रामं वचनमब्रुवन् ।
गच्छन्तमनुगच्छामो यतो राम गमिष्यसि ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayo rāmaṃ vacanamabruvan ,
gacchantamanugacchāmo yato rāma gamiṣyasi.
12. tataḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ rāmam vacanam abruvan
gacchantam anugacchāmaḥ yataḥ rāma gamiṣyasi
12. tataḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ rāmam vacanam abruvan
rāma yataḥ gamiṣyasi gacchantam anugacchāmaḥ
12. Then all the citizens (prakṛti) spoke to Rāma: 'We will follow you wherever you go, O Rāma.'
एषा नः परमा प्रीतिरेष धर्मः परो मतः ।
हृद्गता नः सदा तुष्टिस्तवानुगमने दृढा ॥१३॥
13. eṣā naḥ paramā prītireṣa dharmaḥ paro mataḥ ,
hṛdgatā naḥ sadā tuṣṭistavānugamane dṛḍhā.
13. eṣā naḥ paramā prītiḥ eṣa dharmaḥ paraḥ mataḥ
hṛdgatā naḥ sadā tuṣṭiḥ tava anugamane dṛḍhā
13. naḥ eṣā paramā prītiḥ eṣa paraḥ dharmaḥ mataḥ
tava anugamane naḥ hṛdgatā tuṣṭiḥ sadā dṛḍhā
13. This is our highest joy, and this is considered our supreme natural law (dharma). Our heartfelt satisfaction in following you will always be steadfast.
पौरेषु यदि ते प्रीतिर्यदि स्नेहो ह्यनुत्तमः ।
सपुत्रदाराः काकुत्स्थ समं गच्छाम सत्पथम् ॥१४॥
14. paureṣu yadi te prītiryadi sneho hyanuttamaḥ ,
saputradārāḥ kākutstha samaṃ gacchāma satpatham.
14. paureṣu yadi te prītiḥ yadi snehaḥ hi anuttamaḥ
saputradārāḥ kākutstha samam gacchāma satpatham
14. kākutstha yadi te paureṣu prītiḥ yadi hi anuttamaḥ
snehaḥ saputradārāḥ samam gacchāma satpatham
14. O Kakutstha, if you truly have affection for your citizens, and if your love for them is unsurpassed, then let us, with our children and wives, go together on the righteous path.
तपोवनं वा दुर्गं वा नदीमम्भोनिधिं तथा ।
वयं ते यदि न त्याज्याः सर्वान्नो नय ईश्वर ॥१५॥
15. tapovanaṃ vā durgaṃ vā nadīmambhonidhiṃ tathā ,
vayaṃ te yadi na tyājyāḥ sarvānno naya īśvara.
15. tapovanam vā durgam vā nadīm ambhonidhim tathā
vayam te yadi na tyājyāḥ sarvān naḥ naya īśvara
15. īśvara yadi vayam te na tyājyāḥ tapovanam vā
durgam vā nadīm ambhonidhim tathā sarvān naḥ naya
15. Whether it be a forest hermitage, an inaccessible fort, a river, or an ocean, if we are not to be abandoned by you, O Lord, then lead all of us there.
स तेषां निश्चयं ज्ञात्वा कृतान्तं च निरीक्ष्यच ।
पौराणां दृढभक्तिं च बाढमित्येव सो ऽब्रवीत् ॥१६॥
16. sa teṣāṃ niścayaṃ jñātvā kṛtāntaṃ ca nirīkṣyaca ,
paurāṇāṃ dṛḍhabhaktiṃ ca bāḍhamityeva so'bravīt.
16. saḥ teṣām niścayam jñātvā kṛtāntam ca nirīkṣya ca
paurāṇām dṛḍhabhaktim ca bāḍham iti eva saḥ abravīt
16. saḥ teṣām niścayam kṛtāntam ca paurāṇām dṛḍhabhaktim
ca jñātvā nirīkṣya saḥ bāḍham iti eva abravīt
16. Having understood their firm resolve, and observing both fate (kṛtānta) and the unwavering devotion of the citizens, he simply said, "Indeed."
एवं विनिश्चयं कृत्वा तस्मिन्नहनि राघवः ।
कोसलेषु कुशं वीरमुत्तरेषु तथा लवम् ॥१७॥
17. evaṃ viniścayaṃ kṛtvā tasminnahani rāghavaḥ ,
kosaleṣu kuśaṃ vīramuttareṣu tathā lavam.
17. evam viniścayam kṛtvā tasmin ahani rāghavaḥ
kosaleṣu kuśam vīram uttareṣu tathā lavam
17. rāghavaḥ evam viniścayam kṛtvā tasmin ahani

17. Having thus made this firm decision, on that very day, Rama (rāghava) appointed the heroic Kusha over the Kosala kingdom and Lava over the northern territories.
अभिषिञ्चन्महात्मानाव् उभावेव कुशीलवौ ।
रथानां तु सहस्राणि त्रीणि नागायुतानि च ॥१८॥
18. abhiṣiñcanmahātmānāv ubhāveva kuśīlavau ,
rathānāṃ tu sahasrāṇi trīṇi nāgāyutāni ca.
18. abhiṣiñcan mahātmānau ubhau eva kuśīlavau
rathānām tu sahasrāṇi trīṇi nāga āyutāni ca
18. abhiṣiñcan ubhau eva mahātmānau kuśīlavau,
tu rathānām trīṇi sahasrāṇi ca nāga āyutāni
18. Consecrating both the magnanimous Kusha and Lava, he then bestowed three thousand chariots and ten thousand elephants.
दश चाश्वसहस्राणि एकैकस्य धनं ददौ ।
बहुरत्नौ बहुधनौ हृष्टपुष्टजनावृतौ ॥१९॥
19. daśa cāśvasahasrāṇi ekaikasya dhanaṃ dadau ,
bahuratnau bahudhanau hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanāvṛtau.
19. daśa ca aśvasahasrāṇi ekaikasya dhanam dadau
bahuratnau bahudhanau hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanāvṛtau
19. ekaikasya daśa ca aśvasahasrāṇi dhanam dadau
bahuratnau bahudhanau hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanāvṛtau
19. He also gave ten thousand horses to each, ensuring that both (Kusha and Lava) would be rich in many jewels and abundant wealth, and surrounded by joyful, well-nourished people.
अभिषिच्य तु तौ वीरौ प्रस्थाप्य स्वपुरे तथा ।
दूतान् संप्रेषयामास शत्रुघ्नाय महात्मने ॥२०॥
20. abhiṣicya tu tau vīrau prasthāpya svapure tathā ,
dūtān saṃpreṣayāmāsa śatrughnāya mahātmane.

20. Having consecrated those two heroes and sent them to their own city, he (Rama) then dispatched messengers to the great-souled (mahātman) Shatrughna.
