सुसंरब्धं तु सौमित्रिं लक्ष्मणं क्रोधमूर्छितम् ।
रामस्तु परिसान्त्व्याथ वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. susaṃrabdhaṃ tu saumitriṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ krodhamūrchitam ,
rāmastu parisāntvyātha vacanaṃ cedamabravīt.

1. But Rama, having greatly consoled Lakshmana, the son of Sumitra (Saumitri), who was thoroughly agitated and overcome with anger, then spoke these words.
किमत्र धनुषा कार्यमसिना वा सचर्मणा ।
महेष्वासे महाप्राज्ञे भरते स्वयमागते ॥२॥
2. kimatra dhanuṣā kāryamasinā vā sacarmaṇā ,
maheṣvāse mahāprājñe bharate svayamāgate.
2. kim atra dhanuṣā kāryam asinā vā sa-carmaṇā |
mahā-iṣvāse mahā-prājñe bharate svayam āgate

2. What is the use of a bow here, or a sword with its shield, when Bharata himself, the great archer and highly intelligent one, has arrived?
प्राप्तकालं यदेषो ऽस्मान्भरतो द्रष्टुमिच्छति ।
अस्मासु मनसाप्येष नाहितं किं चिदाचरेत् ॥३॥
3. prāptakālaṃ yadeṣo'smānbharato draṣṭumicchati ,
asmāsu manasāpyeṣa nāhitaṃ kiṃ cidācaret.
3. prāpta-kālam yat eṣaḥ asmān bharataḥ draṣṭum icchati
| asmāsu manasā api eṣaḥ na āhitam kim cit ācaret
3. yat eṣaḥ bharataḥ asmān draṣṭum icchati (tat) prāpta-kālam
(asti) eṣaḥ asmāsu manasā api kim cit āhitam na ācaret
3. It is timely that Bharata wishes to see us. He would not commit any harm to us, not even in his mind.
विप्रियं कृतपूर्वं ते भरतेन कदा न किम् ।
ईदृशं वा भयं ते ऽद्य भरतं यो ऽत्र शङ्कसे ॥४॥
4. vipriyaṃ kṛtapūrvaṃ te bharatena kadā na kim ,
īdṛśaṃ vā bhayaṃ te'dya bharataṃ yo'tra śaṅkase.
4. vi-priyam kṛta-pūrvam te bharatena kadā na kim |
īdṛśam vā bhayam te adya bharatam yaḥ atra śaṅkase
4. bharatena te kadā kim vi-priyam kṛta-pūrvam na? vā adya te īdṛśam bhayam (kim asti),
yaḥ atra bharatam śaṅkase
4. Has Bharata ever previously done anything disagreeable to you? Or what kind of fear do you have of Bharata today, that you suspect him here?
न हि ते निष्ठुरं वाच्यो भरतो नाप्रियं वचः ।
अहं ह्यप्रियमुक्तः स्यां भरतस्याप्रिये कृते ॥५॥
5. na hi te niṣṭhuraṃ vācyo bharato nāpriyaṃ vacaḥ ,
ahaṃ hyapriyamuktaḥ syāṃ bharatasyāpriye kṛte.
5. na hi te niṣṭhuram vācyaḥ bharataḥ na apriyam vacaḥ
| aham hi apriyam uktaḥ syām bharatasya apriye kṛte
5. hi te bharataḥ niṣṭhuram na vācyaḥ,
na apriyam vacaḥ (vācyaḥ) hi bharatasya apriye kṛte,
aham apriyam uktaḥ syām
5. Indeed, Bharata should not be spoken to roughly or with unpleasant words by you. For I myself would be considered to have been spoken to disagreeably if any unpleasantness were done to Bharata.
कथं नु पुत्राः पितरं हन्युः कस्यां चिदापदि ।
भ्राता वा भ्रातरं हन्यात् सौमित्रे प्राणमात्मनः ॥६॥
6. kathaṃ nu putrāḥ pitaraṃ hanyuḥ kasyāṃ cidāpadi ,
bhrātā vā bhrātaraṃ hanyāt saumitre prāṇamātmanaḥ.
6. kathaṃ nu putrāḥ pitaraṃ hanyuḥ kasyāṃ cit āpadi
bhrātā vā bhrātaraṃ hanyāt saumitre prāṇam ātmanaḥ
6. saumitre kasyāṃ cit āpadi putrāḥ pitaraṃ kathaṃ nu
hanyuḥ? vā bhrātā ātmanaḥ prāṇaṃ bhrātaraṃ hanyāt?
6. O son of Sumitrā (Soumitre), how indeed could sons kill their father, or a brother kill his own brother - who is like his very life (ātman) - even in some calamity?
यदि राज्यस्य हेतोस्त्वमिमां वाचं प्रभाषसे ।
वक्ष्यामि भरतं दृष्ट्वा राज्यमस्मै प्रदीयताम् ॥७॥
7. yadi rājyasya hetostvamimāṃ vācaṃ prabhāṣase ,
vakṣyāmi bharataṃ dṛṣṭvā rājyamasmai pradīyatām.
7. yadi rājyasya hetoḥ tvam imāṃ vācaṃ prabhāṣase
vakṣyāmi bharataṃ dṛṣṭvā rājyaṃ asmai pradīyatām
7. yadi tvaṃ rājyasya hetoḥ imāṃ vācaṃ prabhāṣase,
(tadā) bharataṃ dṛṣṭvā asmai rājyaṃ pradīyatām (iti) vakṣyāmi.
7. If you are uttering these words for the sake of the kingdom, I will see Bharata and tell him, 'Let the kingdom be given to him.'
उच्यमानो हि भरतो मया लक्ष्मण तत्त्वतः ।
राज्यमस्मै प्रयच्छेति बाढमित्येव वक्ष्यति ॥८॥
8. ucyamāno hi bharato mayā lakṣmaṇa tattvataḥ ,
rājyamasmai prayaccheti bāḍhamityeva vakṣyati.
8. ucyamānaḥ hi bharataḥ mayā lakṣmaṇa tattvataḥ
rājyaṃ asmai prayaccha iti bāḍhaṃ iti eva vakṣyati
8. lakṣmaṇa,
mayā tattvataḥ asmai rājyaṃ prayaccha iti ucyamānaḥ hi bharataḥ bāḍham iti eva vakṣyati.
8. O Lakṣmaṇa, when Bharata is truly told by me, 'Give the kingdom to him,' he will indeed say, 'Certainly!'
तथोक्तो धर्मशीलेन भ्रात्रा तस्य हिते रतः ।
लक्ष्मणः प्रविवेशेव स्वानि गात्राणि लज्जया ॥९॥
9. tathokto dharmaśīlena bhrātrā tasya hite rataḥ ,
lakṣmaṇaḥ praviveśeva svāni gātrāṇi lajjayā.
9. tathā uktaḥ dharmaśīlena bhrātrā tasya hite rataḥ
lakṣmaṇaḥ praviveśa iva svāni gātrāṇi lajjayā
9. dharmaśīlena bhrātrā tasya hite rataḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ tathā uktaḥ (san),
lajjayā svāni gātrāṇi praviveśa iva.
9. Lakṣmaṇa, who was devoted to the welfare of his (Rāma's) brother, thus addressed by his righteous (dharma-śīla) brother, seemed to shrink into his own limbs out of shame.
व्रीडितं लक्ष्मणं दृष्ट्वा राघवः प्रत्युवाच ह ।
एष मन्ये महाबाहुरिहास्मान्द्रष्टुमागतः ॥१०॥
10. vrīḍitaṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāghavaḥ pratyuvāca ha ,
eṣa manye mahābāhurihāsmāndraṣṭumāgataḥ.
10. vrīḍitam lakṣmaṇam dṛṣṭvā rāghavaḥ prati uvāca
ha eṣa manye mahābāhuḥ iha asmān draṣṭum āgataḥ
10. vrīḍitam lakṣmaṇam dṛṣṭvā rāghavaḥ ha prati uvāca
eṣaḥ mahābāhuḥ iha asmān draṣṭum āgataḥ manye
10. Seeing Lakshmana embarrassed, Rama replied, "I believe this mighty-armed one has come here to see us."
वनवासमनुध्याय गृहाय प्रतिनेष्यति ।
इमां वाप्येश वैदेहीमत्यन्तसुखसेविनीम् ॥११॥
11. vanavāsamanudhyāya gṛhāya pratineṣyati ,
imāṃ vāpyeśa vaidehīmatyantasukhasevinīm.
11. vanavāsam anudhyāya gṛhāya pratineṣyati imām
vā api eṣa vaidehīm atyanta sukha sevinīm
11. vanavāsam anudhyāya,
(eṣaḥ) gṛhāya pratineṣyati vā api eṣaḥ imām atyanta sukha sevinīm vaidehīm (neṣyati)
11. Considering our forest exile, he will lead us back home. Or, he might take this Vaidehī (Sītā), who is accustomed to extreme comfort.
एतौ तौ संप्रकाशेते गोत्रवन्तौ मनोरमौ ।
वायुवेगसमौ वीर जवनौ तुरगोत्तमौ ॥१२॥
12. etau tau saṃprakāśete gotravantau manoramau ,
vāyuvegasamau vīra javanau turagottamau.

12. O hero, those two, splendid and charming, appear before us; they are excellent horses, swift as the wind, and of noble breed.
स एष सुमहाकायः कम्पते वाहिनीमुखे ।
नागः शत्रुंजयो नाम वृद्धस्तातस्य धीमतः ॥१३॥
13. sa eṣa sumahākāyaḥ kampate vāhinīmukhe ,
nāgaḥ śatruṃjayo nāma vṛddhastātasya dhīmataḥ.
13. sa eṣa sumahākāyaḥ kampate vāhinī mukhe nāgaḥ
śatruñjayaḥ nāma vṛddhaḥ tātasya dhīmataḥ
13. sa eṣaḥ sumahākāyaḥ nāma śatruñjayaḥ nāgaḥ vṛddhaḥ dhīmataḥ tātasya,
vāhinī mukhe kampate
13. This is that elephant of immense body, named Śatruñjaya, who is old and belongs to my wise father; he trembles at the head of the army.
अवतीर्य तु सालाग्रात्तस्मात् स समितिंजयः ।
लक्ष्मणः प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा तस्थौ रामस्य पार्श्वतः ॥१४॥
14. avatīrya tu sālāgrāttasmāt sa samitiṃjayaḥ ,
lakṣmaṇaḥ prāñjalirbhūtvā tasthau rāmasya pārśvataḥ.
14. avatīrya tu sālāgrāt tasmāt sa samitiṃjayaḥ
lakṣmaṇaḥ prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā tasthau rāmasya pārśvataḥ
14. sa samitiṃjayaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ tasmāt sālāgrāt avatīrya
tu prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā rāmasya pārśvataḥ tasthau
14. Having descended from the top of that Sāla tree, Lakshmana, ever victorious in assemblies, stood by Rama's side with folded hands.
भरतेनाथ संदिष्टा संमर्दो न भवेदिति ।
समन्तात्तस्य शैलस्य सेनावासमकल्पयत् ॥१५॥
15. bharatenātha saṃdiṣṭā saṃmardo na bhavediti ,
samantāttasya śailasya senāvāsamakalpayat.
15. bharatena atha saṃdiṣṭā saṃmardaḥ na bhavet
iti samantāt tasya śailasya senāvāsam akalpayat
15. atha bharatena "saṃmardaḥ na bhavet" iti saṃdiṣṭā
(senā) tasya śailasya samantāt senāvāsam akalpayat
15. And then, as instructed by Bharata, (to ensure) there would be no crowding, the army encampment was arranged all around that mountain.
अध्यर्धमिक्ष्वाकुचमूर्योजनं पर्वतस्य सा ।
पार्श्वे न्यविशदावृत्य गजवाजिरथाकुला ॥१६॥
16. adhyardhamikṣvākucamūryojanaṃ parvatasya sā ,
pārśve nyaviśadāvṛtya gajavājirathākulā.
16. adhyardham ikṣvākucamūḥ yojanam parvatasya
sā pārśve nyaviśat āvṛtya gajavājirathākulā
16. gajavājirathākulā sā ikṣvākucamūḥ parvatasya
pārśve adhyardham yojanam āvṛtya nyaviśat
16. That Ikshvaku army, teeming with elephants, horses, and chariots, encamped on the side of the mountain, covering an area of one and a half yojanas.
सा चित्रकूटे भरतेन सेना धर्मं पुरस्कृत्य विधूय दर्पम् ।
प्रसादनार्थं रघुनन्दनस्य विरोचते नीतिमता प्रणीता ॥१७॥
17. sā citrakūṭe bharatena senā dharmaṃ puraskṛtya vidhūya darpam ,
prasādanārthaṃ raghunandanasya virocate nītimatā praṇītā.
17. sā citrakūṭe bharatena senā dharmam puraskṛtya vidhūya darpam
prasādanārtham raghunandanasya virocate nītimatā praṇītā
17. citrakūṭe nītimatā bharatena dharmam puraskṛtya darpam vidhūya

17. That army at Chitrakuta, led by the sagacious Bharata, appears splendid; it has cast off arrogance and upholds its intrinsic nature (dharma) for the appeasement of Rama (Raghunandana).
