तौ रजन्यां प्रभातायां स्नातौ हुतहुताशनौ ।
यथोक्तमृषिणा पूर्वं तत्र तत्राभ्यगायताम् ॥१॥

1. When the night had dawned, those two, having bathed and performed a Vedic fire ritual, sang as previously instructed by the sage, in various places.
तां स शुश्राव काकुत्स्थः पूर्वचर्यां ततस्ततः ।
अपूर्वां पाठ्य जातिं च गेयेन समलंकृताम् ॥२॥
2. tāṃ sa śuśrāva kākutsthaḥ pūrvacaryāṃ tatastataḥ ,
apūrvāṃ pāṭhya jātiṃ ca geyena samalaṃkṛtām.

2. Rāma (Kākutstha) heard that ancient history, here and there, a novel kind of recitation, embellished with melody.
प्रमाणैर्बहुभिर्बद्धां तन्त्रीलयसमन्विताम् ।
बालाभ्यां राघवः श्रुत्वा कौतूहलपरो ऽभवत् ॥३॥
3. pramāṇairbahubhirbaddhāṃ tantrīlayasamanvitām ,
bālābhyāṃ rāghavaḥ śrutvā kautūhalaparo'bhavat.

3. Having heard (the song), structured with many (metrical) measures and accompanied by string instruments and rhythm, from the two boys, Rāma (Rāghava) became filled with great curiosity.
अथ कर्मान्तरे राजा समानीय महामुनीन् ।
पार्थिवांश्च नरव्याघ्रः पण्डितान्नैगमांस्तथा ॥४॥
4. atha karmāntare rājā samānīya mahāmunīn ,
pārthivāṃśca naravyāghraḥ paṇḍitānnaigamāṃstathā.

4. Then, during another part of the ritual, the king, a tiger among men, having gathered the great sages, as well as princes, learned scholars, and those versed in the Vedic traditions.
पौराणिकाञ् शब्दवितो ये च वृद्धा द्विजातयः ।
एतान् सर्वान् समानीय गातारौ समवेशयत् ॥५॥
5. paurāṇikāñ śabdavito ye ca vṛddhā dvijātayaḥ ,
etān sarvān samānīya gātārau samaveśayat.

5. ...as well as experts in the Purāṇas, grammarians, and elderly Brahmins (dvija). Having assembled all of them, he then seated the two singers.
हृष्टा ऋषिगणास्तत्र पार्थिवाश्च महौजसः ।
पिबन्त इव चक्षुर्भ्यां राजानं गायकौ च तौ ॥६॥
6. hṛṣṭā ṛṣigaṇāstatra pārthivāśca mahaujasaḥ ,
pibanta iva cakṣurbhyāṃ rājānaṃ gāyakau ca tau.

6. There, the delighted groups of sages and the greatly energetic kings gazed upon the king and the two singers, as if drinking them in with their eyes.
परस्परमथोचुस्ते सर्व एव समं ततः ।
उभौ रामस्य सदृशौ बिम्बाद्बिम्बमिवोद्धृतौ ॥७॥
7. parasparamathocuste sarva eva samaṃ tataḥ ,
ubhau rāmasya sadṛśau bimbādbimbamivoddhṛtau.
7. parasparam atha ūcuḥ te sarve eva samam tataḥ
ubhau rāmasya sadṛśau bimbāt bimbam iva uddhṛtau
7. tataḥ atha te sarve eva samam parasparam ūcuḥ
ubhau rāmasya sadṛśau bimbāt bimbam iva uddhṛtau
7. Then all of them spoke to each other simultaneously, saying: "Both of them resemble Rāma, as if one image (bimba) were taken out from another image (bimba)."
जटिलौ यदि न स्यातां न वल्कलधरौ यदि ।
विशेषं नाधिगच्छामो गायतो राघवस्य च ॥८॥
8. jaṭilau yadi na syātāṃ na valkaladharau yadi ,
viśeṣaṃ nādhigacchāmo gāyato rāghavasya ca.
8. jaṭilau yadi na syātām na valkaladharau yadi
viśeṣam na adhigacchāmaḥ gāyataḥ rāghavasya ca
8. yadi jaṭilau na syātām,
yadi valkaladharau na syātām,
gāyataḥ rāghavasya ca viśeṣam na adhigacchāmaḥ
8. If they did not have matted hair and were not wearing bark garments, we would not discern any difference between them and Rāghava (Rāma) as he sings.
तेषां संवदतामेवं श्रोतॄणां हर्षवर्धनम् ।
गेयं प्रचक्रतुस्तत्र ताव् उभौ मुनिदारकौ ॥९॥
9. teṣāṃ saṃvadatāmevaṃ śrotṝṇāṃ harṣavardhanam ,
geyaṃ pracakratustatra tāv ubhau munidārakau.
9. teṣām saṃvadatām evam śrotṝṇām harṣavardhanam
geyam pracakratuḥ tatra tau ubhau munidārakau
9. evam teṣām śrotṝṇām saṃvadatām,

9. As the listeners were thus conversing, those two young ascetics (muni-dārakau) then began to sing the song that delights the audience.
ततः प्रवृत्तं मधुरं गान्धर्वमतिमानुषम् ।
न च तृप्तिं ययुः सर्वे श्रोतारो गेय संपदा ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ pravṛttaṃ madhuraṃ gāndharvamatimānuṣam ,
na ca tṛptiṃ yayuḥ sarve śrotāro geya saṃpadā.
10. tataḥ pravṛttam madhuram gāndharvam atimānuṣam
na ca tṛptim yayuḥ sarve śrotāraḥ geya sampadā
10. tataḥ madhuram atimānuṣam gāndharvam pravṛttam.
sarve śrotāraḥ ca geya sampadā tṛptim na yayuḥ
10. Then began the sweet, superhuman Gandharva music. Yet, all the listeners did not reach satisfaction, captivated by the richness of the song.
प्रवृत्तमादितः पूर्वं सर्गान्नारददर्शनात् ।
ततः प्रभृति सर्गांश्च यावद्विंशत्यगायताम् ॥११॥
11. pravṛttamāditaḥ pūrvaṃ sargānnāradadarśanāt ,
tataḥ prabhṛti sargāṃśca yāvadviṃśatyagāyatām.
11. pravṛttam āditaḥ pūrvam sargāt nāradadarśanāt
tataḥ prabhṛti sargān ca yāvat viṃśati agāyatām
11. āditaḥ pūrvam nāradadarśanāt sargāt pravṛttam.
tataḥ prabhṛti yāvat viṃśati sargān ca agāyatām
11. The narrative (referring to the song) began from the very start, from the canto (sarga) describing Nārada's visit. From that point, they sang through the cantos up to the twentieth.
ततो ऽपराह्णसमये राघवः समभाषत ।
श्रुत्वा विंशतिसर्गांस्तान्भरतं भ्रातृवत्सलः ॥१२॥
12. tato'parāhṇasamaye rāghavaḥ samabhāṣata ,
śrutvā viṃśatisargāṃstānbharataṃ bhrātṛvatsalaḥ.
12. tataḥ aparāhṇasamaye rāghavaḥ samabhāṣata śrutvā
viṃśatisargān tān bharataṃ bhrātṛvatsalaḥ
12. tataḥ bhrātṛvatsalaḥ rāghavaḥ viṃśatisargān
tān śrutvā aparāhṇasamaye bharataṃ samabhāṣata
12. Then, Rama (rāghava), who was very affectionate towards his brother, having heard those twenty cantos, addressed Bharata in the afternoon.
अष्टादश सहस्राणि सुवर्णस्य महात्मनोः ।
ददस्व शीघ्रं काकुत्स्थ बालयोर्मा वृथा श्रमः ॥१३॥
13. aṣṭādaśa sahasrāṇi suvarṇasya mahātmanoḥ ,
dadasva śīghraṃ kākutstha bālayormā vṛthā śramaḥ.
13. aṣṭādaśa sahasrāṇi suvarṇasya mahātmanoḥ dadasva
śīghraṃ kākutstha bālayoḥ mā vṛthā śramaḥ
13. kākutstha aṣṭādaśa sahasrāṇi suvarṇasya mahātmanoḥ

13. O Rama (kākutstha), give eighteen thousand [coins] of gold quickly to the two great-souled boys; let their effort not be in vain.
दीयमानं सुवर्णं तन्नागृह्णीतां कुशीलवौ ।
ऊचतुश्च महात्मानौ किमनेनेति विस्मितौ ॥१४॥
14. dīyamānaṃ suvarṇaṃ tannāgṛhṇītāṃ kuśīlavau ,
ūcatuśca mahātmānau kimaneneti vismitau.
14. dīyamānaṃ suvarṇaṃ tat na agṛhṇītām kuśīlavau
ūcatuḥ ca mahātmānau kim anena iti vismitau
14. dīyamānaṃ tat suvarṇaṃ kuśīlavau na agṛhṇītām

14. Kuśa and Lava, those two noble-souled (mahātman) boys, did not accept the gold being offered, and astonished, they said, 'What is the use of this?'
वन्येन फलमूलेन निरतु स्वो वनौकसौ ।
सुवर्णेन हिरण्येन किं करिष्यावहे वने ॥१५॥
15. vanyena phalamūlena niratu svo vanaukasau ,
suvarṇena hiraṇyena kiṃ kariṣyāvahe vane.

suvarṇena hiraṇyena kim kariṣyāvahe vane
15. svau vanaukasau vanyena phalamūlena niratu

15. Our own two forest dwellers sustain themselves with forest fruits and roots. What shall we do with gold or treasure in the forest?
तथा तयोः प्रब्रुवतोः कौतूहलसमन्विताः ।
श्रोतारश्चैव रामश्च सर्व एव सुविस्मिताः ॥१६॥
16. tathā tayoḥ prabruvatoḥ kautūhalasamanvitāḥ ,
śrotāraścaiva rāmaśca sarva eva suvismitāḥ.
16. tathā tayoḥ prabruvatoḥ kautūhalasamanvitāḥ
śrotāraḥ ca eva rāmaḥ ca sarva eva suvismitāḥ

16. As those two narrated, all the listeners, along with Rama, became deeply curious and completely astonished.
तस्य चैवागमं रामः काव्यस्य श्रोतुमुत्सुकः ।
पप्रच्छ तौ महातेजास्ताव् उभौ मुनिदारकौ ॥१७॥
17. tasya caivāgamaṃ rāmaḥ kāvyasya śrotumutsukaḥ ,
papraccha tau mahātejāstāv ubhau munidārakau.
17. tasya ca eva āgamam rāmaḥ kāvyasya śrotum utsukaḥ
papraccha tau mahātejāḥ tau ubhau munidārakau
17. ca eva mahātejāḥ rāmaḥ tasya kāvyasya āgamam
śrotum utsukaḥ tau ubhau munidārakau papraccha
17. And Rama, the exceedingly glorious one, eager to hear the full account of that epic poem, asked those two sons of the (muni) sage.
किंप्रमाणमिदं काव्यं का प्रतिष्ठा महात्मनः ।
कर्ता काव्यस्य महतः को वासौ मुनिपुंगवः ॥१८॥
18. kiṃpramāṇamidaṃ kāvyaṃ kā pratiṣṭhā mahātmanaḥ ,
kartā kāvyasya mahataḥ ko vāsau munipuṃgavaḥ.
18. kimpramāṇam idam kāvyam kā pratiṣṭhā mahātmanaḥ
kartā kāvyasya mahataḥ kaḥ vā asau munipuṅgavaḥ
18. idam kāvyam kimpramāṇam mahātmanaḥ pratiṣṭhā kā
mahataḥ kāvyasya kartā asau kaḥ munipuṅgavaḥ vā
18. What is the scope of this poem? What is the renown (pratiṣṭhā) of the great soul? And who is that excellent (muni) sage, the author of this magnificent poem?
पृच्छन्तं राघवं वाक्यमूचतुर्मुनिदारकौ ।
वाल्मीकिर्भगवान् कर्ता संप्राप्तो यज्ञसंनिधिम् ।
येनेदं चरितं तुभ्यमशेषं संप्रदर्शितम् ॥१९॥
19. pṛcchantaṃ rāghavaṃ vākyamūcaturmunidārakau ,
vālmīkirbhagavān kartā saṃprāpto yajñasaṃnidhim ,
yenedaṃ caritaṃ tubhyamaśeṣaṃ saṃpradarśitam.
19. pṛcchantam rāghavam vākyam ūcatuḥ
munidārakau vālmīkiḥ bhagavān kartā
samprāptaḥ yajñasaṃnidhim yena idam
caritam tubhyam aśeṣam sampradarśitam
19. munidārakau pṛcchantam rāghavam vākyam

yajñasaṃnidhim samprāptaḥ yena idam
aśeṣam caritam tubhyam sampradarśitam
19. To Rama, who was thus questioning, the two sons of the (muni) sage replied with these words: 'The venerable Valmiki is the author. He has arrived at the site of the (Vedic ritual) (yajña), and it is by him that this entire narrative has been fully presented to you.'
आदिप्रभृति राजेन्द्र पञ्चसर्ग शतानि च ।
प्रतिष्ठा जीवितं यावत्तावद् राजञ् शुभाशुभम् ॥२०॥
20. ādiprabhṛti rājendra pañcasarga śatāni ca ,
pratiṣṭhā jīvitaṃ yāvattāvad rājañ śubhāśubham.
20. ādi-prabhṛti rājendra pañcasarga-śatāni ca
pratiṣṭhā jīvitam yāvat tāvat rājan śubhāśubham
20. rājan rājendra ādi-prabhṛti pañcasarga-śatāni
ca yāvat pratiṣṭhā jīvitam tāvat śubhāśubham
20. O king of kings, from the very beginning, and through hundreds of fivefold creations, as long as existence and life endure, O king, both good and bad things manifest.
यदि बुद्धिः कृता राजञ् श्रवणाय महारथ ।
कर्मान्तरे क्षणी हूतस्तच्छृणुष्व सहानुजः ॥२१॥
21. yadi buddhiḥ kṛtā rājañ śravaṇāya mahāratha ,
karmāntare kṣaṇī hūtastacchṛṇuṣva sahānujaḥ.
21. yadi buddhiḥ kṛtā rājan śravaṇāya mahāratha
karmāntare kṣaṇī hūtaḥ tat śṛṇuṣva sahānujaḥ
21. rājan mahāratha yadi buddhiḥ śravaṇāya kṛtā
karmāntare kṣaṇī hūtaḥ tat sahānujaḥ śṛṇuṣva
21. If, O king, O great warrior, your mind is set on listening, and you have been called at an opportune moment between other actions (karma), then listen to that, along with your younger brother.
बाढमित्यब्रवीद् रामस्तौ चानुज्ञाप्य राघवम् ।
प्रहृष्टौ जग्मतुर्वासं यत्रासौ मुनिपुंगवः ॥२२॥
22. bāḍhamityabravīd rāmastau cānujñāpya rāghavam ,
prahṛṣṭau jagmaturvāsaṃ yatrāsau munipuṃgavaḥ.
22. bāḍham iti abravīt rāmaḥ tau ca anujñāpya rāghavam
prahṛṣṭau jagmatuḥ vāsam yatra asau munipuṅgavaḥ
22. rāmaḥ iti bāḍham abravīt ca tau rāghavam anujñāpya
prahṛṣṭau yatra asau munipuṅgavaḥ vāsam jagmatuḥ
22. Rāma said, 'Very well.' And those two, having taken leave of Rāghava, went highly delighted to the abode where that foremost of sages (muni-puṅgava) resided.
रामो ऽपि मुनिभिः सार्धं पार्थिवैश्च महात्मभिः ।
श्रुत्वा तद्गीतमाधुर्यं कर्मशालामुपागमत् ॥२३॥
23. rāmo'pi munibhiḥ sārdhaṃ pārthivaiśca mahātmabhiḥ ,
śrutvā tadgītamādhuryaṃ karmaśālāmupāgamat.
23. rāmaḥ api munibhiḥ sārdham pārthivaiḥ ca mahātmabhiḥ
śrutvā tadgītamādhuryam karmaśālām upāgamat
23. rāmaḥ api munibhiḥ ca mahātmabhiḥ pārthivaiḥ
sārdham tadgītamādhuryam śrutvā karmaśālām upāgamat
23. Rāma also, along with sages (muni) and noble kings, having heard the sweet melody of that song, approached the performance hall (karma-śālā).
