भरद्वाजाश्रमं दृष्ट्वा क्रोशादेव नरर्षभः ।
बलं सर्वमवस्थाप्य जगाम सह मन्त्रिभिः ॥१॥

1. Having sighted Bharadvāja's hermitage (āśrama) from just a *krośa* away, Bharata, the best of men, made his entire army halt and proceeded with his ministers.
पद्भ्यामेव हि धर्मज्ञो न्यस्तशस्त्रपरिच्छदः ।
वसानो वाससी क्षौमे पुरोधाय पुरोहितम् ॥२॥
2. padbhyāmeva hi dharmajño nyastaśastraparicchadaḥ ,
vasāno vāsasī kṣaume purodhāya purohitam.

2. Indeed, Bharata, the knower of natural law (dharma), having laid aside his weapons and equipment, and wearing two silken garments, proceeded on foot, placing his family priest (purohita) ahead of him.
ततः संदर्शने तस्य भरद्वाजस्य राघवः ।
मन्त्रिणस्तानवस्थाप्य जगामानु पुरोहितम् ॥३॥
3. tataḥ saṃdarśane tasya bharadvājasya rāghavaḥ ,
mantriṇastānavasthāpya jagāmānu purohitam.

3. Then, upon seeing Bharadvāja, Rāghava, having stationed those ministers, followed the priest.
वसिष्ठमथ दृष्ट्वैव भरद्वाजो महातपाः ।
संचचालासनात्तूर्णं शिष्यानर्घ्यमिति ब्रुवन् ॥४॥
4. vasiṣṭhamatha dṛṣṭvaiva bharadvājo mahātapāḥ ,
saṃcacālāsanāttūrṇaṃ śiṣyānarghyamiti bruvan.
4. vasiṣṭham atha dṛṣṭvā eva bharadvājaḥ mahātapaḥ
sañcacāla āsanāt tūrṇam śiṣyān arghyam iti bruvan

4. Then, as soon as the great ascetic (mahātapaḥ) Bharadvāja saw Vasiṣṭha, he quickly stirred from his seat, instructing his disciples, "The respectful offering (arghya)!"
समागम्य वसिष्ठेन भरतेनाभिवादितः ।
अबुध्यत महातेजाः सुतं दशरथस्य तम् ॥५॥
5. samāgamya vasiṣṭhena bharatenābhivāditaḥ ,
abudhyata mahātejāḥ sutaṃ daśarathasya tam.

5. Having met Vasiṣṭha, and being greeted by Bharata, the immensely radiant (mahātejāḥ) sage understood him to be the son of Daśaratha.
ताभ्यामर्घ्यं च पाद्यं च दत्त्वा पश्चात् फलानि च ।
आनुपूर्व्याच्च धर्मज्ञः पप्रच्छ कुशलं कुले ॥६॥
6. tābhyāmarghyaṃ ca pādyaṃ ca dattvā paścāt phalāni ca ,
ānupūrvyācca dharmajñaḥ papraccha kuśalaṃ kule.
6. tābhyām arghyam ca pādyam ca dattvā paścāt phalāni
ca ānupūrvyāt ca dharmajñaḥ papraccha kuśalam kule
6. tābhyām arghyam ca pādyam ca dattvā paścāt phalāni

6. Having given to those two (Vasiṣṭha and Bharata) both the respectful offering (arghyam) and water for the feet (pādyam), and then fruits, the knower of natural law (dharmajñaḥ) subsequently inquired about the welfare of the family in due order.
अयोध्यायां बले कोशे मित्रेष्वपि च मन्त्रिषु ।
जानन्दशरथं वृत्तं न राजानमुदाहरत् ॥७॥
7. ayodhyāyāṃ bale kośe mitreṣvapi ca mantriṣu ,
jānandaśarathaṃ vṛttaṃ na rājānamudāharat.
7. ayodhyāyām bale kośe mitreṣu api ca mantriṣu
jānan daśaratham vṛttam na rājānam udāharat
7. daśaratham vṛttam ayodhyāyām bale kośe mitreṣu
mantriṣu api ca jānan rājānam na udāharat
7. Knowing the situation regarding Dasharatha in Ayodhya, its army, treasury, friends, and ministers, he did not refer to him as 'king'.
वसिष्ठो भरतश्चैनं पप्रच्छतुरनामयम् ।
शरीरे ऽग्निषु वृक्षेषु शिष्येषु मृगपक्षिषु ॥८॥
8. vasiṣṭho bharataścainaṃ papracchaturanāmayam ,
śarīre'gniṣu vṛkṣeṣu śiṣyeṣu mṛgapakṣiṣu.
8. vasiṣṭhaḥ bharataḥ ca enam papracchatuḥ anāmayam
śarīre agniṣu vṛkṣeṣu śiṣyeṣu mṛgapakṣiṣu
8. vasiṣṭhaḥ bharataḥ ca enam śarīre agniṣu vṛkṣeṣu
śiṣyeṣu mṛgapakṣiṣu anāmayam papracchatuḥ
8. Vasistha and Bharata asked him about his welfare concerning his body, the sacred fires, the trees, his disciples, and the animals and birds.
तथेति च प्रतिज्ञाय भरद्वाजो महातपाः ।
भरतं प्रत्युवाचेदं राघवस्नेहबन्धनात् ॥९॥
9. tatheti ca pratijñāya bharadvājo mahātapāḥ ,
bharataṃ pratyuvācedaṃ rāghavasnehabandhanāt.
9. tathā iti ca pratijñāya bharadvājaḥ mahātapāḥ
bharatam prati uvāca idam rāghavasnehabandhanāt
9. mahātapāḥ bharadvājaḥ tathā iti ca pratijñāya

9. And having assented with "So be it," Bharadvaja, the great ascetic, spoke this to Bharata, out of a bond of affection for Rama (Raghava).
किमिहागमने कार्यं तव राज्यं प्रशासतः ।
एतदाचक्ष्व मे सर्वं न हि मे शुध्यते मनः ॥१०॥
10. kimihāgamane kāryaṃ tava rājyaṃ praśāsataḥ ,
etadācakṣva me sarvaṃ na hi me śudhyate manaḥ.
10. kim iha āgamane kāryam tava rājyam praśāsataḥ
etat ācakṣva me sarvam na hi me śudhyate manaḥ
10. rājyam praśāsataḥ tava iha āgamane kim kāryam? etat sarvam me ācakṣva,
hi me manaḥ na śudhyate.
10. What is the purpose of your coming here, you who are ruling the kingdom? Tell me all this, for my mind is not clear.
सुषुवे यम मित्रघ्नं कौसल्यानन्दवर्धनम् ।
भ्रात्रा सह सभार्यो यश्चिरं प्रव्राजितो वनम् ॥११॥
11. suṣuve yama mitraghnaṃ kausalyānandavardhanam ,
bhrātrā saha sabhāryo yaściraṃ pravrājito vanam.
11. suṣuve yam mitraghnam kausalyānandavardhanam
bhrātrā saha sabhāryaḥ yaḥ ciram pravrājitaḥ vanam
11. kausalyā yam mitraghnam ānandavardhanam suṣuve
yaḥ sabhāryaḥ bhrātrā saha ciram vanam pravrājitaḥ
11. Kaushalya gave birth to him, the vanquisher of foes, who increased her joy, and who, with his brother and wife, was exiled to the forest for a long time.
नियुक्तः स्त्रीनियुक्तेन पित्रा यो ऽसौ महायशाः ।
वनवासी भवेतीह समाः किल चतुर्दश ॥१२॥
12. niyuktaḥ strīniyuktena pitrā yo'sau mahāyaśāḥ ,
vanavāsī bhavetīha samāḥ kila caturdaśa.
12. niyuktaḥ strīniyuktena pitrā yaḥ asau mahāyaśāḥ
vanavāsī bhavet iti iha samāḥ kila caturdaśa
12. yaḥ asau mahāyaśāḥ strīniyuktena pitrā iha
caturdaśa samāḥ vanavāsī bhavet iti niyuktaḥ kila
12. He (Rama), the highly renowned one, who was ordered by his father (Dasharatha), who himself was influenced by a woman (Kaikeyi), to become a forest dweller here for fourteen years.
कच्चिन्न तस्यापापस्य पापं कर्तुमिहेच्छसि ।
अकण्टकं भोक्तुमना राज्यं तस्यानुजस्य च ॥१३॥
13. kaccinna tasyāpāpasya pāpaṃ kartumihecchasi ,
akaṇṭakaṃ bhoktumanā rājyaṃ tasyānujasya ca.
13. kaccit na tasya apāpasya pāpam kartum iha icchasi
akaṇṭakam bhoktum manāḥ rājyam tasya anujasya ca
13. kaccit na iha tasya apāpasya pāpam kartum icchasi
akaṇṭakam tasya anujasya ca rājyam bhoktum manāḥ
13. Surely you do not wish to commit evil here against that faultless one (Rama), desiring to enjoy his kingdom and that of his younger brother (Lakshmana) without hindrance?
एवमुक्तो भरद्वाजं भरतः प्रत्युवाच ह ।
पर्यश्रु नयनो दुःखाद्वाचा संसज्जमानया ॥१४॥
14. evamukto bharadvājaṃ bharataḥ pratyuvāca ha ,
paryaśru nayano duḥkhādvācā saṃsajjamānayā.
14. evam uktaḥ bharadvājam bharataḥ pratyuvāca ha
paryaśru nayanaḥ duḥkhāt vācā saṃsajjamānayā
14. evam uktaḥ bharataḥ duḥkhāt paryaśru nayanaḥ
saṃsajjamānayā vācā bharadvājam pratyuvāca ha
14. Thus addressed, Bharata replied to Bharadvaja, his eyes filled with tears from sorrow, and with a faltering voice.
हतो ऽस्मि यदि मामेवं भगवानपि मन्यते ।
मत्तो न दोषमाशङ्केर्नैवं मामनुशाधि हि ॥१५॥
15. hato'smi yadi māmevaṃ bhagavānapi manyate ,
matto na doṣamāśaṅkernaivaṃ māmanuśādhi hi.
15. hataḥ asmi yadi mām evam bhagavān api manyate
mattaḥ na doṣam āśaṅker na evam mām anuśādhi hi
15. yadi bhagavān api mām evam hataḥ asmi manyate,
mattaḥ doṣam na āśaṅker,
hi evam mām na anuśādhi.
15. If even your venerable self (Bhagavān) considers me thus condemned, then you should not suspect any fault from me. Indeed, do not instruct me in this manner.
न चैतदिष्टं माता मे यदवोचन्मदन्तरे ।
नाहमेतेन तुष्टश्च न तद्वचनमाददे ॥१६॥
16. na caitadiṣṭaṃ mātā me yadavocanmadantare ,
nāhametena tuṣṭaśca na tadvacanamādade.
16. na ca etat iṣṭam mātā me yat avocan mat antare
na aham etena tuṣṭaḥ ca na tat vacanam ādadhe
16. me mātā yat mat antare avocan ca,
etat na iṣṭam.
aham etena ca na tuṣṭaḥ,
tat vacanam na ādadhe.
16. And this (action) that my mother spoke concerning me is not desired by me. I am not pleased by it, nor do I accept her words.
अहं तु तं नरव्याघ्रमुपयातः प्रसादकः ।
प्रतिनेतुमयोध्यां च पादौ तस्याभिवन्दितुम् ॥१७॥
17. ahaṃ tu taṃ naravyāghramupayātaḥ prasādakaḥ ,
pratinetumayodhyāṃ ca pādau tasyābhivanditum.
17. aham tu tam naravyāghram upayātaḥ prasādakaḥ
pratinetum ayodhyām ca pādau tasya abhivanditum
17. tu aham tam naravyāghram prasādakaḥ upayātaḥ,
ca ayodhyām pratinetum,
tasya pādau abhivanditum.
17. But I have come as an appeaser to that tiger among men (Rama), both to lead him back to Ayodhyā and to worship his feet.
त्वं मामेवंगतं मत्वा प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ।
शंस मे भगवन् रामः क्व संप्रति महीपतिः ॥१८॥
18. tvaṃ māmevaṃgataṃ matvā prasādaṃ kartumarhasi ,
śaṃsa me bhagavan rāmaḥ kva saṃprati mahīpatiḥ.
18. tvam mām evamgatam matvā prasādam kartum arhasi
śaṃsa me bhagavan rāmaḥ kva samprati mahīpatiḥ
18. tvam mām evamgatam matvā,
prasādam kartum arhasi.
bhagavan rāmaḥ,
me śaṃsa,
kva samprati mahīpatiḥ?
18. You, therefore, considering me to be in this state (of submission and distress), ought to show favor. Tell me, venerable sir (Bhagavān) Rama, where is the king (mahīpati) now?
उवाच तं भरद्वाजः प्रसादाद्भरतं वचः ।
त्वय्येतत् पुरुषव्याघ्र युक्तं राघववंशजे ।
गुरुवृत्तिर्दमश्चैव साधूनां चानुयायिता ॥१९॥
19. uvāca taṃ bharadvājaḥ prasādādbharataṃ vacaḥ ,
tvayyetat puruṣavyāghra yuktaṃ rāghavavaṃśaje ,
guruvṛttirdamaścaiva sādhūnāṃ cānuyāyitā.
19. uvāca tam bharadvājaḥ prasādāt
bharatam vacaḥ tvayi etat puruṣavyāghra
yuktam rāghavavaṃśaje guruvṛttiḥ
damaḥ ca eva sādhūnām ca anuyāyitā
19. bharadvājaḥ prasādāt tam bharatam
vacaḥ uvāca puruṣavyāghra rāghavavaṃśaje
tvayi etat guruvṛttiḥ damaḥ
ca eva sādhūnām ca anuyāyitā yuktam
19. Sage Bharadvaja, out of compassion, spoke these words to Bharata: "This conduct - respect for teachers (guru), self-control, and adherence to the path of righteous people - is indeed fitting for you, O tiger among men, born in the lineage of Raghu."
जाने चैतन्मनःस्थं ते दृढीकरणमस्त्विति ।
अपृच्छं त्वां तवात्यर्थं कीर्तिं समभिवर्धयन् ॥२०॥
20. jāne caitanmanaḥsthaṃ te dṛḍhīkaraṇamastviti ,
apṛcchaṃ tvāṃ tavātyarthaṃ kīrtiṃ samabhivardhayan.
20. jāne ca etat manaḥstham te dṛḍhīkaraṇam astu iti
apṛccham tvām tava atyartham kīrtim samabhivardhayan
20. jāne ca etat te manaḥstham dṛḍhīkaraṇam astu iti.
tvām tava kīrtim atyartham samabhivardhayan apṛccham.
20. "I know this sentiment is already in your heart, and let this (my statement) be a confirmation of it. I asked you (about it) in order to greatly enhance your renown."
असौ वसति ते भ्राता चित्रकूटे महागिरौ ।
श्वस्तु गन्तासि तं देशं वसाद्य सह मन्त्रिभिः ।
एतं मे कुरु सुप्राज्ञ कामं कामार्थकोविद ॥२१॥
21. asau vasati te bhrātā citrakūṭe mahāgirau ,
śvastu gantāsi taṃ deśaṃ vasādya saha mantribhiḥ ,
etaṃ me kuru suprājña kāmaṃ kāmārthakovida.
21. asau vasati te bhrātā citrakūṭe
mahāgirau śvaḥ tu gantā asi tam deśam
vasa adya saha mantribhiḥ etam me
kuru suprājña kāmam kāmārthakovida
21. te bhrātā asau mahāgirau citrakūṭe vasati.
śvaḥ tu tam deśam gantā asi.
adya mantribhiḥ saha vasa.

21. Your brother (Rama) dwells there on the great mountain Chitrakuta. Tomorrow, however, you will go to that region. Today, stay here with your ministers. O very wise one, skilled in matters of desire (kāma) and prosperity (artha), please fulfill this wish of mine.
ततस्तथेत्येवमुदारदर्शनः प्रतीतरूपो भरतो ऽब्रवीद्वचः ।
चकार बुद्धिं च तदा महाश्रमे निशानिवासाय नराधिपात्मजः ॥२२॥
22. tatastathetyevamudāradarśanaḥ pratītarūpo bharato'bravīdvacaḥ ,
cakāra buddhiṃ ca tadā mahāśrame niśānivāsāya narādhipātmajaḥ.
22. tataḥ tathā iti evam udāradarśanaḥ
pratītarūpaḥ bharataḥ abravīt
vacaḥ cakāra buddhim ca tadā mahāśrame
niśānivāsāya narādhipātmajaḥ
22. tataḥ udāradarśanaḥ pratītarūpaḥ narādhipātmajaḥ bharataḥ tathā iti evam vacaḥ abravīt.
ca tadā mahāśrame niśānivāsāya buddhim cakāra.
22. Then Bharata, who was of noble and confident appearance, replied with the words, 'So be it.' And the king's son then made the decision to stay overnight in the great hermitage.
