एतत्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा सीता रामस्य दुःखिता ।
प्रसक्ताश्रुमुखी मन्दमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. etattu vacanaṃ śrutvā sītā rāmasya duḥkhitā ,
prasaktāśrumukhī mandamidaṃ vacanamabravīt.

1. Hearing these words of Rāma, Sītā, distressed, her face streaming with tears, slowly spoke this statement.
ये त्वया कीर्तिता दोषा वने वस्तव्यतां प्रति ।
गुणानित्येव तान् विद्धि तव स्नेहपुरस्कृतान् ॥२॥
2. ye tvayā kīrtitā doṣā vane vastavyatāṃ prati ,
guṇānityeva tān viddhi tava snehapuraskṛtān.
2. ye tvayā kīrtitā doṣāḥ vane vastavyatām prati
guṇān iti eva tān viddhi tava snehapuraskṛtān
2. tvayā vane vastavyatām prati ye doṣāḥ kīrtitāḥ,
tān tava snehapuraskṛtān guṇān iti eva viddhi
2. Those difficulties (doṣāḥ) that you mentioned regarding dwelling in the forest - know them to be nothing but virtues (guṇāḥ), prompted by your affection.
त्वया च सह गन्तव्यं मया गुरुजनाज्ञया ।
त्वद्वियोगेन मे राम त्यक्तव्यमिह जीवितम् ॥३॥
3. tvayā ca saha gantavyaṃ mayā gurujanājñayā ,
tvadviyogena me rāma tyaktavyamiha jīvitam.
3. tvayā ca saha gantavyam mayā gurujanājñayā
tvadvayogena me rāma tyaktavyam iha jīvitam
3. mayā gurujanājñayā ca tvayā saha gantavyam
rāma tvadvayogena me iha jīvitam tyaktavyam
3. I must go with you, and it is by the command of my elders (guru-janāḥ). O Rāma, by separation from you, my life (jīvitam) here must be abandoned.
न च मां त्वत्समीपस्थमपि शक्नोति राघव ।
सुराणामीश्वरः शक्रः प्रधर्षयितुमोजसा ॥४॥
4. na ca māṃ tvatsamīpasthamapi śaknoti rāghava ,
surāṇāmīśvaraḥ śakraḥ pradharṣayitumojasā.
4. na ca mām tvatsamīpastham api śaknoti rāghava
surāṇām īśvaraḥ śakraḥ pradharṣayitum ojasā
4. rāghava,
surāṇām īśvaraḥ śakraḥ ca mām tvatsamīpastham api ojasā pradharṣayitum na śaknoti
4. O Rāghava, not even Śakra (Indra), the lord of the gods, can overpower (pradharṣayitum) me with his might (ojasā), even if I am near you.
पतिहीना तु या नारी न सा शक्ष्यति जीवितुम् ।
काममेवंविधं राम त्वया मम विदर्शितम् ॥५॥
5. patihīnā tu yā nārī na sā śakṣyati jīvitum ,
kāmamevaṃvidhaṃ rāma tvayā mama vidarśitam.
5. patihīnā tu yā nārī na sā śakṣyati jīvitum
kāmam evamvidham rāma tvayā mama vidarśitam
5. rāma yā patihīnā nārī tu sā jīvitum na śakṣyati
tvayā mama evamvidham kāmam vidarśitam
5. Indeed, a woman without her husband cannot survive. O Rāma, you have truly shown me such a fate.
अथ चापि महाप्राज्ञ ब्राह्मणानां मया श्रुतम् ।
पुरा पितृगृहे सत्यं वस्तव्यं किल मे वने ॥६॥
6. atha cāpi mahāprājña brāhmaṇānāṃ mayā śrutam ,
purā pitṛgṛhe satyaṃ vastavyaṃ kila me vane.
6. atha ca api mahāprājña brāhmaṇānām mayā śrutam
purā pitṛgṛhe satyam vastavyam kila me vane
6. atha ca api mahāprājña mayā brāhmaṇānām purā
pitṛgṛhe śrutam satyam me vane vastavyam kila
6. Now, moreover, O highly wise one, I also heard from Brahmins long ago, when I was in my father's house, that I was truly destined to dwell in the forest.
लक्षणिभ्यो द्विजातिभ्यः श्रुत्वाहं वचनं गृहे ।
वनवासकृतोत्साहा नित्यमेव महाबल ॥७॥
7. lakṣaṇibhyo dvijātibhyaḥ śrutvāhaṃ vacanaṃ gṛhe ,
vanavāsakṛtotsāhā nityameva mahābala.
7. lakṣaṇibhyaḥ dvijātibhyaḥ śrutvā aham vacanam
gṛhe vanavāsakṛtotsāhā nityam eva mahābala
7. mahābala aham gṛhe lakṣaṇibhyaḥ dvijātibhyaḥ
vacanam śrutvā nityam eva vanavāsakṛtotsāhā
7. O mighty one, having heard the words from the expert Brahmins (dvijāti) in my home, I have always indeed been inspired with enthusiasm for dwelling in the forest.
आदेशो वनवासस्य प्राप्तव्यः स मया किल ।
सा त्वया सह तत्राहं यास्यामि प्रिय नान्यथा ॥८॥
8. ādeśo vanavāsasya prāptavyaḥ sa mayā kila ,
sā tvayā saha tatrāhaṃ yāsyāmi priya nānyathā.
8. ādeśaḥ vanavāsasya prāptavyaḥ saḥ mayā kila sā
tvayā saha tatra aham yāsyāmi priya na anyathā
8. priya vanavāsasya saḥ ādeśaḥ mayā kila prāptavyaḥ
sā aham tvayā saha tatra yāsyāmi na anyathā
8. O dear one, that command for forest-dwelling must certainly be fulfilled by me. I will go there with you, and not otherwise.
कृतादेशा भविष्यामि गमिष्यामि सह त्वया ।
कालश्चायं समुत्पन्नः सत्यवाग्भवतु द्विजः ॥९॥
9. kṛtādeśā bhaviṣyāmi gamiṣyāmi saha tvayā ,
kālaścāyaṃ samutpannaḥ satyavāgbhavatu dvijaḥ.
9. kṛtādeśā bhaviṣyāmi gamiṣyāmi saha tvayā kālaḥ
ca ayam samutpannaḥ satyavāk bhavatu dvijaḥ
9. aham kṛtādeśā bhaviṣyāmi,
tvayā saha gamiṣyāmi ca.
ayam kālaḥ samutpannaḥ,
dvijaḥ satyavāk bhavatu.
9. I will fulfill the command and will go with you. This time has indeed arrived, so let the Brahmin's words prove true.
वनवासे हि जानामि दुःखानि बहुधा किल ।
प्राप्यन्ते नियतं वीर पुरुषैरकृतात्मभिः ॥१०॥
10. vanavāse hi jānāmi duḥkhāni bahudhā kila ,
prāpyante niyataṃ vīra puruṣairakṛtātmabhiḥ.
10. vanavāse hi jānāmi duḥkhāni bahudhā kila
prāpyante niyatam vīra puruṣaiḥ akṛtātmabhiḥ
10. vīra,
aham vanavāse hi bahudhā duḥkhāni niyataṃ jānāmi,
[yāni] akṛtātmabhiḥ puruṣaiḥ prāpyante kila.
10. Indeed, I know that during a forest dwelling, sorrows are certainly encountered in many ways, O hero, by men whose (ātman) inner self is not disciplined.
कन्यया च पितुर्गेहे वनवासः श्रुतो मया ।
भिक्षिण्याः साधुवृत्ताया मम मातुरिहाग्रतः ॥११॥
11. kanyayā ca piturgehe vanavāsaḥ śruto mayā ,
bhikṣiṇyāḥ sādhuvṛttāyā mama māturihāgrataḥ.
11. kanyayā ca pituḥ gehe vanavāsaḥ śrutaḥ mayā
bhikṣiṇyāḥ sādhuvṛttāyāḥ mama mātuḥ iha agrataḥ
11. ca mayā kanyayā pituḥ gehe vanavāsaḥ,
iha agrataḥ mama sādhuvṛttāyāḥ bhikṣiṇyāḥ mātuḥ śrutaḥ.
11. While still a maiden (kanyā) in my father's house, I heard about forest dwelling from my mother, a virtuous female mendicant (bhikṣiṇī), right here in her presence.
प्रसादितश्च वै पूर्वं त्वं वै बहुविधं प्रभो ।
गमनं वनवासस्य काङ्क्षितं हि सह त्वया ॥१२॥
12. prasāditaśca vai pūrvaṃ tvaṃ vai bahuvidhaṃ prabho ,
gamanaṃ vanavāsasya kāṅkṣitaṃ hi saha tvayā.
12. prasāditaḥ ca vai pūrvam tvam vai bahuvidham
prabho gamanam vanavāsasya kāṅkṣitam hi saha tvayā
12. ca vai prabho tvam pūrvam bahuvidham prasāditaḥ vai.
hi vanavāsasya gamanam tvayā saha kāṅkṣitam.
12. Indeed, you were appeased in many ways before, O Lord. My journey to the forest (vanavāsa) with you was certainly desired.
कृतक्षणाहं भद्रं ते गमनं प्रति राघव ।
वनवासस्य शूरस्य चर्या हि मम रोचते ॥१३॥
13. kṛtakṣaṇāhaṃ bhadraṃ te gamanaṃ prati rāghava ,
vanavāsasya śūrasya caryā hi mama rocate.
13. kṛtakṣaṇā aham bhadram te gamanam prati rāghava
vanavāsasya śūrasya caryā hi mama rocate
13. rāghava kṛtakṣaṇā aham te bhadram gamanam prati
[asti] hi vanavāsasya śūrasya caryā mama rocate
13. O Rāghava, I am ready; may good fortune be with you on your journey. Indeed, the way of life (carya) of a brave person during forest exile pleases me.
शुद्धात्मन्प्रेमभावाद्धि भविष्यामि विकल्मषा ।
भर्तारमनुगच्छन्ती भर्ता हि मम दैवतम् ॥१४॥
14. śuddhātmanpremabhāvāddhi bhaviṣyāmi vikalmaṣā ,
bhartāramanugacchantī bhartā hi mama daivatam.
14. śuddhātman premabhāvāt hi bhaviṣyāmi vikalmaṣā
bhartāram anugacchantī bhartā hi mama daivatam
14. śuddhātman hi premabhāvāt bhartāram anugacchantī [sati]
vikalmaṣā bhaviṣyāmi hi bhartā mama daivatam [asti]
14. O pure-souled one (ātman), indeed, by virtue of my feeling of love, I shall become free from sin by following my husband; for truly, my husband is my deity.
प्रेत्यभावे ऽपि कल्याणः संगमो मे सह त्वया ।
श्रुतिर्हि श्रूयते पुण्या ब्राह्मणानां यशस्विनाम् ॥१५॥
15. pretyabhāve'pi kalyāṇaḥ saṃgamo me saha tvayā ,
śrutirhi śrūyate puṇyā brāhmaṇānāṃ yaśasvinām.
15. pretyabhāve api kalyāṇaḥ saṅgamaḥ me saha tvayā
śrutiḥ hi śrūyate puṇyā brāhmaṇānām yaśasvinām
15. api pretyabhāve tvayā saha me saṅgamaḥ kalyāṇaḥ [bhavati]
hi puṇyā śrutiḥ yaśasvinām brāhmaṇānām [sādhu] śrūyate
15. Even in the afterlife, my union with you will be auspicious. For indeed, a sacred teaching (śruti) is heard from renowned Brahmins.
इह लोके च पितृभिर्या स्त्री यस्य महामते ।
अद्भिर्दत्ता स्वधर्मेण प्रेत्यभावे ऽपि तस्य सा ॥१६॥
16. iha loke ca pitṛbhiryā strī yasya mahāmate ,
adbhirdattā svadharmeṇa pretyabhāve'pi tasya sā.
16. iha loke ca pitṛbhiḥ yā strī yasya mahāmate
adbhiḥ dattā svadharmeṇa pretyabhāve api tasya sā
16. mahāmate ca iha loke pitṛbhiḥ yā strī yasya adbhiḥ svadharmeṇa dattā,
api pretyabhāve sā tasya [bhavati]
16. O great-minded one, the woman who is given by her parents with water in this world to a man, according to proper custom (dharma), she belongs to him even in the afterlife.
एवमस्मात् स्वकां नारीं सुवृत्तां हि पतिव्रताम् ।
नाभिरोचयसे नेतुं त्वं मां केनेह हेतुना ॥१७॥
17. evamasmāt svakāṃ nārīṃ suvṛttāṃ hi pativratām ,
nābhirocayase netuṃ tvaṃ māṃ keneha hetunā.
17. evam asmāt svakām nārīm suvṛttām hi pativratām
na abhirocayase netum tvam mām kena iha hetunā
17. tvam evam asmāt svakām suvṛttām hi pativratām
nārīm mām netum na abhirocayase iha kena hetunā
17. For what reason, then, do you not wish to take me, your own wife, who is indeed virtuous and devoted to her husband (pativratā), with you?
भक्तां पतिव्रतां दीनां मां समां सुखदुःखयोः ।
नेतुमर्हसि काकुत्स्थ समानसुखदुःखिनीम् ॥१८॥
18. bhaktāṃ pativratāṃ dīnāṃ māṃ samāṃ sukhaduḥkhayoḥ ,
netumarhasi kākutstha samānasukhaduḥkhinīm.
18. bhaktām pativratām dīnām mām samām sukhaduḥkhayoḥ
netum arhasi kākutstha samānasukhaduḥkhinīm
18. kākutstha tvam bhaktām pativratām dīnām samām
sukhaduḥkhayoḥ samānasukhaduḥkhinīm mām netum arhasi
18. O Kakutstha (Kākutstha), you ought to take me, your devoted (bhaktām), chaste (pativratā), and distressed wife, who is constant in both happiness and misery and shares equally in your joys and sorrows.
यदि मां दुःखितामेवं वनं नेतुं न चेच्छसि ।
विषमग्निं जलं वाहमास्थास्ये मृत्युकारणात् ॥१९॥
19. yadi māṃ duḥkhitāmevaṃ vanaṃ netuṃ na cecchasi ,
viṣamagniṃ jalaṃ vāhamāsthāsye mṛtyukāraṇāt.
19. yadi mām duḥkhitām evam vanam netum na ca icchasi
viṣam agnim jalam vāham āsthāsye mṛtyukāraṇāt
19. yadi tvam evam duḥkhitām mām vanam netum na ca icchasi,
(tada) viṣam agnim jalam vāham mṛtyukāraṇāt āsthāsye
19. If you do not wish to take me, thus distressed, to the forest, then I shall resort to poison, fire, water, or a fall, for the sake of ending my life.
एवं बहुविधं तं सा याचते गमनं प्रति ।
नानुमेने महाबाहुस्तां नेतुं विजनं वनम् ॥२०॥
20. evaṃ bahuvidhaṃ taṃ sā yācate gamanaṃ prati ,
nānumene mahābāhustāṃ netuṃ vijanaṃ vanam.
20. evam bahuvidham tam sā yācate gamanam prati
na anūmene mahābāhuḥ tām netum vijanam vanam
20. sā evam bahuvidham tam gamanam prati yācate (kintu)
mahābāhuḥ tām vijanam vanam netum na anūmene
20. In this manner, she implored him in many ways concerning her going (with him). However, the mighty-armed (mahābāhu) [Rama] did not consent to take her to the solitary forest.
एवमुक्ता तु सा चिन्तां मैथिली समुपागता ।
स्नापयन्तीव गामुष्णैरश्रुभिर्नयनच्युतैः ॥२१॥
21. evamuktā tu sā cintāṃ maithilī samupāgatā ,
snāpayantīva gāmuṣṇairaśrubhirnayanacyutaiḥ.
21. evam uktā tu sā cintām maithilī samupāgatā
snāpayantī iva gām uṣṇaiḥ aśrubhiḥ nayanacyutaiḥ
21. sā maithilī evam uktā tu cintām samupāgatā
nayanacyutaiḥ uṣṇaiḥ aśrubhiḥ gām snāpayantī iva
21. Thus addressed, Maithili (Sita) became deeply distressed, as if bathing the earth with the hot tears falling from her eyes.
चिन्तयन्तीं तथा तां तु निवर्तयितुमात्मवान् ।
क्रोधाविष्टां तु वैदेहीं काकुत्स्थो बह्वसान्त्वयत् ॥२२॥
22. cintayantīṃ tathā tāṃ tu nivartayitumātmavān ,
krodhāviṣṭāṃ tu vaidehīṃ kākutstho bahvasāntvayat.
22. cintayantīm tathā tām tu nivartayitum ātmavān
krodhāviṣṭām tu vaidehīm kākutsthaḥ bahu asāntvayat
22. ātmavān kākutsthaḥ krodhāviṣṭām tathā cintayantīm
tām vaidehīm nivartayitum tu bahu asāntvayat
22. To dissuade her, who was thus worrying and overcome by anger, the self-possessed (ātman) Kakutstha (Rama) greatly consoled Vaidehī.
