स्निग्धगम्भीरघोषेण स्यन्दनेनोपयान्प्रभुः ।
अयोध्यां भरतः क्षिप्रं प्रविवेश महायशाः ॥१॥

1. The highly renowned Bharata, arriving by his chariot with a soft and deep rumble, swiftly entered Ayodhya.

2. It was like a dark, unlit night, overcome by gloom, where only cats and owls roamed, and men and elephants were hidden away.
राहुशत्रोः प्रियां पत्नीं श्रिया प्रज्वलितप्रभाम् ।
ग्रहेणाभ्युत्थितेनैकां रोहिणीमिव पीडिताम् ॥३॥
3. rāhuśatroḥ priyāṃ patnīṃ śriyā prajvalitaprabhām ,
graheṇābhyutthitenaikāṃ rohiṇīmiva pīḍitām.

3. like Rohini, the beloved wife of the Moon (the enemy of Rahu), who was brilliant with splendor, yet tormented and isolated by a rising planet.
अल्पोष्णक्षुब्धसलिलां घर्मोत्तप्तविहंगमाम् ।
लीनमीनझषग्राहां कृशां गिरिनदीमिव ॥४॥
4. alpoṣṇakṣubdhasalilāṃ gharmottaptavihaṃgamām ,
līnamīnajhaṣagrāhāṃ kṛśāṃ girinadīmiva.

4. Like a meager mountain river, its waters slightly warm and disturbed, its birds distressed by the summer heat, and its fish and large aquatic creatures hidden or shrunken.
विधूमामिव हेमाभामध्वराग्निसमुत्थिताम् ।
हविरभ्युक्षितां पश्चाच्छिखां विप्रलयं गताम् ॥५॥
5. vidhūmāmiva hemābhāmadhvarāgnisamutthitām ,
havirabhyukṣitāṃ paścācchikhāṃ vipralayaṃ gatām.

5. (The king's destiny is) like a smokeless, golden-hued flame that rose from the Vedic ritual fire (yajña), was sprinkled with oblations, and afterwards went to dissolution.
विध्वस्तकवचां रुग्णगजवाजिरथध्वजाम् ।
हतप्रवीरामापन्नां चमूमिव महाहवे ॥६॥
6. vidhvastakavacāṃ rugṇagajavājirathadhvajām ,
hatapravīrāmāpannāṃ camūmiva mahāhave.

6. Like an army in a great battle, its armor shattered, its elephants, horses, chariots, and banners broken, its principal warriors slain, and itself plunged into distress.
सफेनां सस्वनां भूत्वा सागरस्य समुत्थिताम् ।
प्रशान्तमारुतोद्धूतां जलोर्मिमिव निःस्वनाम् ॥७॥
7. saphenāṃ sasvanāṃ bhūtvā sāgarasya samutthitām ,
praśāntamārutoddhūtāṃ jalormimiva niḥsvanām.

praśāntamārutoddhūtām jalormim iva niḥsvanām

7. Like a wave that, having risen from the ocean foamy and noisy, is then agitated by a calm wind, and becomes silent.
त्यक्तां यज्ञायुधैः सर्वैरभिरूपैश्च याजकैः ।
सुत्याकाले विनिर्वृत्ते वेदिं गतरवामिव ॥८॥
8. tyaktāṃ yajñāyudhaiḥ sarvairabhirūpaiśca yājakaiḥ ,
sutyākāle vinirvṛtte vediṃ gataravāmiva.
8. tyaktām yajñāyudhaiḥ sarvaiḥ abhirūpaiḥ ca
yājakaiḥ sutyākāle vinirvṛtte vedim gataravām iva
8. sutyākāle vinirvṛtte sarvaiḥ yajñāyudhaiḥ ca

8. (The king's destiny is) like an altar that, after the Soma pressing ritual (yajña) has concluded, has been abandoned by all the ritual implements (yajñāyudha) and by the skilled priests, and is now silent.
गोष्ठमध्ये स्थितामार्तामचरन्तीं नवं तृणम् ।
गोवृषेण परित्यक्तां गवां पत्नीमिवोत्सुकाम् ॥९॥
9. goṣṭhamadhye sthitāmārtāmacarantīṃ navaṃ tṛṇam ,
govṛṣeṇa parityaktāṃ gavāṃ patnīmivotsukām.
9. goṣṭhamadhye sthitām ārtām acarantīm navam tṛṇam
govṛṣeṇa parityaktām gavām patnīm iva utsukām

9. Like the anxious cow, the mate of a bull, standing in the cow-shed, not grazing on fresh grass, abandoned by the bull.
प्रभाकरालैः सुस्निग्धैः प्रज्वलद्भिरिवोत्तमैः ।
वियुक्तां मणिभिर्जात्यैर्नवां मुक्तावलीमिव ॥१०॥
10. prabhākarālaiḥ susnigdhaiḥ prajvaladbhirivottamaiḥ ,
viyuktāṃ maṇibhirjātyairnavāṃ muktāvalīmiva.
10. prabhākarālaiḥ susnigdhaiḥ prajvaladbhiḥ iva uttamaiḥ
viyuktām maṇibhiḥ jātyaiḥ navām muktāvalīm iva

10. Like a new pearl necklace, stripped of its excellent, genuine gems, which were exceedingly smooth, intensely brilliant, and as if shining brightly.
सहसा चलितां स्थानान्महीं पुण्यक्षयाद्गताम् ।
संहृतद्युतिविस्तारां तारामिव दिवश्च्युताम् ॥११॥
11. sahasā calitāṃ sthānānmahīṃ puṇyakṣayādgatām ,
saṃhṛtadyutivistārāṃ tārāmiva divaścyutām.
11. sahasā calitām sthānāt mahīm puṇyakṣayāt gatām
saṃhṛtadyutivistārām tārām iva divaḥ cyutām
11. tārām iva,
sthānāt sahasā calitām,
divaḥ cyutām,
puṇyakṣayāt mahīm gatām,

11. Like a star that has suddenly moved from its position in the sky, fallen to earth due to the exhaustion of its merit (karma), and whose radiant expanse has diminished.
पुष्पनद्धां वसन्तान्ते मत्तभ्रमरशालिनीम् ।
द्रुतदावाग्निविप्लुष्टां क्लान्तां वनलतामिव ॥१२॥
12. puṣpanaddhāṃ vasantānte mattabhramaraśālinīm ,
drutadāvāgnivipluṣṭāṃ klāntāṃ vanalatāmiva.
12. puṣpanaddhām vasanta-ante matta-bhramara-śālinīm
druta-dāvāgni-vipluṣṭām klāntām vanalatām iva
12. vanalatām iva,
vasanta-ante puṣpanaddhām matta-bhramara-śālinīm,

12. Like a wild creeper, which, though covered with flowers at the end of spring and adorned with intoxicated bees, has been swiftly ravaged by a forest fire and is now withered.
संमूढनिगमां सर्वां संक्षिप्तविपणापणाम् ।
प्रच्छन्नशशिनक्षत्रां द्यामिवाम्बुधरैर्वृताम् ॥१३॥
13. saṃmūḍhanigamāṃ sarvāṃ saṃkṣiptavipaṇāpaṇām ,
pracchannaśaśinakṣatrāṃ dyāmivāmbudharairvṛtām.
13. saṃmūḍha-nigamām sarvām saṃkṣipta-vipaṇāpaṇām
pracchanna-śaśi-nakṣatrām dyām iva ambudharaiḥ vṛtām
13. sarvām dyām iva,
ambudharaiḥ vṛtām,
saṃmūḍha-nigamām,
saṃkṣipta-vipaṇāpaṇām,
pracchanna-śaśi-nakṣatrām
13. Like the entire sky, whose celestial pathways are obscured, whose various stellar "markets" are diminished, and whose moon and stars are hidden, being covered by clouds.
क्षीणपानोत्तमैर्भिन्नैः शरावैरभिसंवृताम् ।
हतशौण्डामिवाकाशे पानभूमिमसंस्कृताम् ॥१४॥
14. kṣīṇapānottamairbhinnaiḥ śarāvairabhisaṃvṛtām ,
hataśauṇḍāmivākāśe pānabhūmimasaṃskṛtām.
14. kṣīṇa-pāna-uttamaiḥ bhinnaiḥ śarāvaiḥ abhisaṃvṛtām
hata-śauṇḍām iva ākāśe pānabhūmim asaṃskṛtām
14. ākāśe asaṃskṛtām pānabhūmim iva,
hata-śauṇḍām,
kṣīṇa-pāna-uttamaiḥ bhinnaiḥ śarāvaiḥ abhisaṃvṛtām
14. Like a neglected drinking ground, with its revelers vanished, completely covered in the open by broken shards of excellent drinking vessels from which the drinks have been depleted.
वृक्णभूमितलां निम्नां वृक्णपात्रैः समावृताम् ।
उपयुक्तोदकां भग्नां प्रपां निपतितामिव ॥१५॥
15. vṛkṇabhūmitalāṃ nimnāṃ vṛkṇapātraiḥ samāvṛtām ,
upayuktodakāṃ bhagnāṃ prapāṃ nipatitāmiva.
15. vṛkṇa-bhūmi-talām nimnām vṛkṇa-pātraiḥ samāvṛtām
upayukta-odakām bhagnām prapām nipatitām iva
15. nipatitām bhagnām prapām iva,
nimnām,
vṛkṇa-bhūmi-talām,
upayukta-odakām,
vṛkṇa-pātraiḥ samāvṛtām
15. Like a collapsed and broken public drinking-fountain (prapā), its ground-surface torn, sunken, completely covered by broken vessels, and its water consumed.
विपुलां विततां चैव युक्तपाशां तरस्विनाम् ।
भूमौ बाणैर्विनिष्कृत्तां पतितां ज्यामिवायुधात् ॥१६॥
16. vipulāṃ vitatāṃ caiva yuktapāśāṃ tarasvinām ,
bhūmau bāṇairviniṣkṛttāṃ patitāṃ jyāmivāyudhāt.
16. vipulām vitatām ca eva yuktapāśām tarasvinām
bhūmau bāṇaiḥ viniṣkṛttām patitām jyām iva āyudhāt
16. vipulām vitatām ca eva yuktapāśām tarasvinām
bāṇaiḥ viniṣkṛttām bhūmau patitām āyudhāt jyām iva
16. Extensive and stretched, with its loops attached, belonging to powerful warriors, fallen on the ground, severed by arrows, just like a bowstring from a weapon.
सहसा युद्धशौण्डेन हयारोहेण वाहिताम् ।
निक्षिप्तभाण्डामुत्सृष्टां किशोरीमिव दुर्बलाम् ॥१७॥
17. sahasā yuddhaśauṇḍena hayāroheṇa vāhitām ,
nikṣiptabhāṇḍāmutsṛṣṭāṃ kiśorīmiva durbalām.
17. sahasā yuddhaśauṇḍena hayāroheṇa vāhitām
nikṣiptabhāṇḍām utsṛṣṭām kiśorīm iva durbalām

17. Suddenly driven by a warrior skilled in battle, a horseman, having dropped its burden and then abandoned, like a weak, young mare.
प्रावृषि प्रविगाढायां प्रविष्टस्याभ्र मण्डलम् ।
प्रच्छन्नां नीलजीमूतैर्भास्करस्य प्रभामिव ॥१८॥
18. prāvṛṣi pravigāḍhāyāṃ praviṣṭasyābhra maṇḍalam ,
pracchannāṃ nīlajīmūtairbhāskarasya prabhāmiva.
18. prāvṛṣi pravigāḍhāyām praviṣṭasya abhra maṇḍalam
pracchannām nīlajīmūtaiḥ bhāskarasya prabhām iva
18. prāvṛṣi pravigāḍhāyām abhra maṇḍalam praviṣṭasya

18. Like the radiance of the sun, concealed by dark clouds when the rainy season has deeply set in, having entered the cloud mass.
भरतस्तु रथस्थः सञ् श्रीमान्दशरथात्मजः ।
वाहयन्तं रथश्रेष्ठं सारथिं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१९॥
19. bharatastu rathasthaḥ sañ śrīmāndaśarathātmajaḥ ,
vāhayantaṃ rathaśreṣṭhaṃ sārathiṃ vākyamabravīt.
19. bharataḥ tu rathasthaḥ san śrīmān daśarathātmajaḥ
vāhayantam rathaśreṣṭham sārathim vākyam abravīt
19. tu śrīmān daśarathātmajaḥ bharataḥ rathasthaḥ san
rathaśreṣṭham vāhayantam sārathim vākyam abravīt
19. But Bharata, the illustrious son of Daśaratha, seated in his chariot, spoke words to the charioteer who was driving the excellent chariot.
किं नु खल्वद्य गम्भीरो मूर्छितो न निशम्यते ।
यथापुरमयोध्यायां गीतवादित्रनिःस्वनः ॥२०॥
20. kiṃ nu khalvadya gambhīro mūrchito na niśamyate ,
yathāpuramayodhyāyāṃ gītavāditraniḥsvanaḥ.
20. kim nu khalu adya gambhīraḥ mūrcchitaḥ na niśamyate
yathāpuram ayodhyāyām gītavāditraniḥsvanaḥ
20. adya yathāpuram ayodhyāyām gambhīraḥ mūrcchitaḥ
gītavāditraniḥsvanaḥ kim nu khalu na niśamyate
20. What, indeed, has happened? Today, the deep and resounding sound of singing and musical instruments is not heard in Ayodhya as it was before.
वारुणीमदगन्धाश्च माल्यगन्धश्च मूर्छितः ।
धूपितागरुगन्धश्च न प्रवाति समन्ततः ॥२१॥
21. vāruṇīmadagandhāśca mālyagandhaśca mūrchitaḥ ,
dhūpitāgarugandhaśca na pravāti samantataḥ.
21. vāruṇīmadagandhāḥ ca mālyagandhaḥ ca mūrcchitaḥ
dhūpitāgarugandhaḥ ca na pravāti samantataḥ
21. mūrcchitaḥ vāruṇīmadagandhāḥ ca mālyagandhaḥ
ca dhūpitāgarugandhaḥ ca samantataḥ na pravāti
21. The pervasive fragrances of intoxicating liquor (vāruṇī-madā), and of garlands, as well as the pervasive scent of fumigated agarwood, do not waft all around.
यानप्रवरघोषश्च स्निग्धश्च हयनिःस्वनः ।
प्रमत्तगजनादश्च महांश्च रथनिःस्वनः ।
नेदानीं श्रूयते पुर्यामस्यां रामे विवासिते ॥२२॥
22. yānapravaraghoṣaśca snigdhaśca hayaniḥsvanaḥ ,
pramattagajanādaśca mahāṃśca rathaniḥsvanaḥ ,
nedānīṃ śrūyate puryāmasyāṃ rāme vivāsite.

22. The sound of excellent conveyances, the gentle neighing of horses, the roar of intoxicated elephants, and the great rumble of chariots – these are no longer heard in this city now that Rama has been exiled.
तरुणैश्चारु वेषैश्च नरैरुन्नतगामिभिः ।
संपतद्भिरयोध्यायां न विभान्ति महापथाः ॥२३॥
23. taruṇaiścāru veṣaiśca narairunnatagāmibhiḥ ,
saṃpatadbhirayodhyāyāṃ na vibhānti mahāpathāḥ.
23. taruṇaiḥ ca cāruveṣaiḥ ca naraiḥ unnatagāmibhiḥ
saṃpatadbhiḥ ayodhyāyām na vibhānti mahāpathāḥ
23. ayodhyāyām mahāpathāḥ taruṇaiḥ ca cāruveṣaiḥ ca
naraiḥ unnatagāmibhiḥ saṃpatadbhiḥ na vibhānti
23. The main roads in Ayodhya do not appear splendid, (filled) with young men, men in charming attire, and men walking proudly, rushing about.
एवं बहुविधं जल्पन् विवेश वसतिं पितुः ।
तेन हीनां नरेन्द्रेण सिंहहीनां गुहामिव ॥२४॥
24. evaṃ bahuvidhaṃ jalpan viveśa vasatiṃ pituḥ ,
tena hīnāṃ narendreṇa siṃhahīnāṃ guhāmiva.
24. evam bahuvidham jalpan viveśa vasatim pituḥ
tena hīnām narendreṇa siṃhahīnām guhām iva
24. evam bahuvidham jalpan pituḥ vasatim viveśa
tena narendreṇa hīnām siṃhahīnām guhām iva
24. Speaking in this manner about many things, he entered his father's residence. It was devoid of the king, much like a cave without its lion.
