अथ तां जातसंतापां तेन वाक्येन मोहिताम् ।
सरमा ह्लादयामास पृतिवीं द्यौरिवाम्भसा ॥१॥
1. atha tāṃ jātasaṃtāpāṃ tena vākyena mohitām ,
saramā hlādayāmāsa pṛtivīṃ dyaurivāmbhasā.

1. Then Sarama comforted her, who was distressed and bewildered by those words, just as the sky refreshes the earth with water.
ततस्तस्या हितं सख्याश्चिकीर्षन्ती सखी वचः ।
उवाच काले कालज्ञा स्मितपूर्वाभिभाषिणी ॥२॥
2. tatastasyā hitaṃ sakhyāścikīrṣantī sakhī vacaḥ ,
uvāca kāle kālajñā smitapūrvābhibhāṣiṇī.
2. tataḥ tasyāḥ hitam sakhyāḥ cikīrṣantī sakhī
vacaḥ uvāca kāle kālajñā smitapūrvābhibhāṣiṇī
2. tataḥ kālajñā smitapūrvābhibhāṣiṇī sakhī tasyāḥ sakhyāḥ hitam cikīrṣantī kāle vacaḥ uvāca.
2. Then, her friend, who knew the proper time and spoke with a prior smile, wishing to do what was beneficial for her friend, spoke these words at the opportune moment.
उत्सहेयमहं गत्वा त्वद्वाक्यमसितेक्षणे ।
निवेद्य कुशलं रामे प्रतिच्छन्ना निवर्तितुम् ॥३॥
3. utsaheyamahaṃ gatvā tvadvākyamasitekṣaṇe ,
nivedya kuśalaṃ rāme praticchannā nivartitum.
3. utsaheya aham gatvā tvadvākyam asitekṣaṇe
nivedya kuśalam rāme praticchannā nivartitum
3. asitekṣaṇe,
aham gatvā tvadvākyam rāme kuśalam nivedya praticchannā nivartitum utsaheya.
3. O dark-eyed one, I would be able to go and, having secretly conveyed your message and welfare to Rama, return without being seen.
न हि मे क्रममाणाया निरालम्बे विहायसि ।
समर्थो गतिमन्वेतुं पवनो गरुडो ऽपि वा ॥४॥
4. na hi me kramamāṇāyā nirālambe vihāyasi ,
samartho gatimanvetuṃ pavano garuḍo'pi vā.
4. na hi me kramamāṇāyāḥ nirālambe vihāyasi
samarthaḥ gatim anvetum pavanaḥ garuḍaḥ api vā
4. na hi pavanaḥ garuḍaḥ api vā me nirālambe
vihāyasi gatim anvetum samarthaḥ
4. Indeed, neither the wind nor even Garuda would be able to follow my flight as I traverse the unsupported sky.
एवं ब्रुवाणां तां सीता सरमां पुनरब्रवीत् ।
मधुरं श्लक्ष्णया वाचा पूर्वशोकाभिपन्नया ॥५॥
5. evaṃ bruvāṇāṃ tāṃ sītā saramāṃ punarabravīt ,
madhuraṃ ślakṣṇayā vācā pūrvaśokābhipannayā.
5. evam bruvāṇām tām sītā saramām punaḥ abravīt
madhuram ślakṣṇayā vācā pūrvaśokābhipannayā
5. sītā punaḥ saramām tām evam bruvāṇām madhuram
ślakṣṇayā pūrvaśokābhipannayā vācā abravīt
5. Sita again spoke to Sarama, who had just been speaking thus, addressing her with a sweet and gentle voice, though it was tinged with her enduring sorrow.
समर्था गगनं गन्तुमपि वा त्वं रसातलम् ।
अवगच्छाम्यकर्तव्यं कर्तव्यं ते मदन्तरे ॥६॥
6. samarthā gaganaṃ gantumapi vā tvaṃ rasātalam ,
avagacchāmyakartavyaṃ kartavyaṃ te madantare.
6. samarthā gaganam gantum api vā tvam rasātalam
avagacchāmi akartavyam kartavyam te mat-antare
6. tvam samarthā gaganam gantum api vā rasātalam (asi).
(aham) te mat-antare akartavyam kartavyam avagacchāmi
6. You are capable of going to the sky or even the netherworld. I understand what you should and should not do concerning me.
मत्प्रियं यदि कर्तव्यं यदि बुद्धिः स्थिरा तव ।
ज्ञातुमिच्छामि तं गत्वा किं करोतीति रावणः ॥७॥
7. matpriyaṃ yadi kartavyaṃ yadi buddhiḥ sthirā tava ,
jñātumicchāmi taṃ gatvā kiṃ karotīti rāvaṇaḥ.
7. mat-priyam yadi kartavyam yadi buddhiḥ sthirā tava
jñātum icchāmi tam gatvā kim karoti iti rāvaṇaḥ
7. yadi mat-priyam kartavyam,
yadi tava buddhiḥ sthirā,
(aham) tam gatvā rāvaṇaḥ kim karoti iti jñātum icchāmi
7. If my wish is to be fulfilled, and if your resolve is firm, I wish to know, by going to him, what Ravana is doing.
स हि मायाबलः क्रूरो रावणः शत्रुरावणः ।
मां मोहयति दुष्टात्मा पीतमात्रेव वारुणी ॥८॥
8. sa hi māyābalaḥ krūro rāvaṇaḥ śatrurāvaṇaḥ ,
māṃ mohayati duṣṭātmā pītamātreva vāruṇī.
8. saḥ hi māyābalaḥ krūraḥ rāvaṇaḥ śatrurāvaṇaḥ
mām mohayati duṣṭātmā pītamātrā iva vāruṇī
8. saḥ hi krūraḥ māyābalaḥ śatrurāvaṇaḥ duṣṭātmā
rāvaṇaḥ mām pītamātrā vāruṇī iva mohayati
8. Indeed, that cruel Rāvaṇa, whose strength lies in illusion (māyā) and who causes his enemies to cry out, that wicked-minded being bewilders me, just as intoxicating liquor does the moment it is consumed.
तर्जापयति मां नित्यं भर्त्सापयति चासकृत् ।
राक्षसीभिः सुघोराभिर्या मां रक्षन्ति नित्यशः ॥९॥
9. tarjāpayati māṃ nityaṃ bhartsāpayati cāsakṛt ,
rākṣasībhiḥ sughorābhiryā māṃ rakṣanti nityaśaḥ.
9. tarjāpayati mām nityam bhartsāpayati ca asakṛt
rākṣasībhiḥ sughorābhiḥ yāḥ mām rakṣanti nityaśaḥ
9. saḥ mām nityam tarjāpayati ca asakṛt bhartsāpayati
yāḥ sughorābhiḥ rākṣasībhiḥ mām nityaśaḥ rakṣanti
9. He constantly has me threatened and repeatedly has me rebuked by the very dreadful demonesses who always watch over me.
उद्विग्ना शङ्किता चास्मि न च स्वस्थं मनो मम ।
तद्भयाच्चाहमुद्विग्ना अशोकवनिकां गताः ॥१०॥
10. udvignā śaṅkitā cāsmi na ca svasthaṃ mano mama ,
tadbhayāccāhamudvignā aśokavanikāṃ gatāḥ.
10. udvignā śaṅkitā ca asmi na ca svastham manaḥ mama
tat bhayāt ca aham udvignā aśokavanikām gatāḥ
10. aham udvignā ca śaṅkitā asmi mama manaḥ ca svastham
na tat bhayāt ca aham udvignā aśokavanikām gatāḥ
10. I am agitated and apprehensive, and my mind is not at ease. It is due to that fear that I, being distressed, went to the Aśoka grove.
यदि नाम कथा तस्य निश्चितं वापि यद्भवेत् ।
निवेदयेथाः सर्वं तत् परो मे स्यादनुग्रहः ॥११॥
11. yadi nāma kathā tasya niścitaṃ vāpi yadbhavet ,
nivedayethāḥ sarvaṃ tat paro me syādanugrahaḥ.
11. yadi nāma kathā tasya niścitam vā api yat bhavet
nivedayethāḥ sarvam tat paraḥ me syāt anugrahaḥ
11. yadi nāma tasya kathā vā niścitam api yat bhavet
tat sarvam nivedayethāḥ me paraḥ anugrahaḥ syāt
11. If there is any news of him, or indeed whatever may be certain, you should report all of that. That would be a supreme favor to me.
सा त्वेवं ब्रुवतीं सीतां सरमा वल्गुभाषिणी ।
उवाच वचनं तस्याः स्पृशन्ती बाष्पविक्लवम् ॥१२॥
12. sā tvevaṃ bruvatīṃ sītāṃ saramā valgubhāṣiṇī ,
uvāca vacanaṃ tasyāḥ spṛśantī bāṣpaviklavam.
12. sā tu evam bruvatīm sītām saramā valgubhāṣiṇī
uvāca vacanam tasyāḥ spṛśantī bāṣpaviklavam
12. sā valgubhāṣiṇī saramā,
evam bruvatīm sītām spṛśantī,
tasyāḥ bāṣpaviklavam vacanam uvāca.
12. The sweet-speaking Sarama, touching Sītā as she was speaking thus, then spoke words to her, words that were choked with tears.
एष ते यद्यभिप्रायस्तस्माद्गच्छामि जानकि ।
गृह्य शत्रोरभिप्रायमुपावृत्तां च पश्य माम् ॥१३॥
13. eṣa te yadyabhiprāyastasmādgacchāmi jānaki ,
gṛhya śatrorabhiprāyamupāvṛttāṃ ca paśya mām.
13. eṣa te yadi abhiprāyaḥ tasmāt gacchāmi jānakī
gṛhya śatroḥ abhiprāyam upāvṛttām ca paśya mām
13. jānakī,
yadi eṣaḥ te abhiprāyaḥ,
tasmāt gacchāmi.
śatroḥ abhiprāyam gṛhya ca,
upāvṛttām mām paśya.
13. Jānakī, if this is your intention, then I will go. Having grasped the enemy's intention, you shall see me returned.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो गत्वा समीपं तस्य रक्षसः ।
शुश्राव कथितं तस्य रावणस्य समन्त्रिणः ॥१४॥
14. evamuktvā tato gatvā samīpaṃ tasya rakṣasaḥ ,
śuśrāva kathitaṃ tasya rāvaṇasya samantriṇaḥ.
14. evam uktvā tataḥ gatvā samīpam tasya rakṣasaḥ
śuśrāva kathitam tasya rāvaṇasya samantriṇaḥ
14. evam uktvā,
tataḥ tasya rakṣasaḥ samīpam gatvā,
tasya samantriṇaḥ rāvaṇasya kathitam śuśrāva.
14. Having spoken thus, and then having gone near that demon, she heard what was said by Rāvaṇa, who was with his ministers.
सा श्रुत्वा निश्चयं तस्य निश्चयज्ञा दुरात्मनः ।
पुनरेवागमत् क्षिप्रमशोकवनिकां तदा ॥१५॥
15. sā śrutvā niścayaṃ tasya niścayajñā durātmanaḥ ,
punarevāgamat kṣipramaśokavanikāṃ tadā.
15. sā śrutvā niścayam tasya niścayajñā durātmanaḥ
punar eva āgamat kṣipram aśokavanikām tadā
15. sā niścayajñā,
tasya durātmanaḥ niścayam śrutvā,
tadā kṣipram punar eva aśokavanikām āgamat.
15. That Sarama, who knew resolutions, having heard the resolve of that evil-minded one, then quickly returned again to the Aśoka grove.
सा प्रविष्टा पुनस्तत्र ददर्श जनकात्मजाम् ।
प्रतीक्षमाणां स्वामेव भ्रष्टपद्मामिव श्रियम् ॥१६॥
16. sā praviṣṭā punastatra dadarśa janakātmajām ,
pratīkṣamāṇāṃ svāmeva bhraṣṭapadmāmiva śriyam.
16. sā praviṣṭā punaḥ tatra dadarśa janakātmajām
pratīkṣamāṇām svām eva bhraṣṭapadmām iva śriyam
16. sā punaḥ tatra praviṣṭā janakātmajām svām eva bhraṣṭapadmām śriyam iva pratīkṣamāṇām dadarśa.
16. She, having entered there again, saw the daughter of Janaka, [Sita], waiting as if she were the goddess Śrī (Lakṣmī) herself, but with a withered lotus, bereft of her usual splendor.
तां तु सीता पुनः प्राप्तां सरमां वल्गुभाषिणीम् ।
परिष्वज्य च सुस्निग्धं ददौ च स्वयमासनम् ॥१७॥
17. tāṃ tu sītā punaḥ prāptāṃ saramāṃ valgubhāṣiṇīm ,
pariṣvajya ca susnigdhaṃ dadau ca svayamāsanam.
17. tām tu sītā punaḥ prāptām saramām valgubhāṣiṇīm
pariṣvajya ca susnigdham dadau ca svayam āsanam
17. sītā tu punaḥ prāptām tām valgubhāṣiṇīm saramām pariṣvajya ca susnigdham ca svayam āsanam dadau.
17. Sita, upon receiving that sweetly speaking Sarama again, embraced her very affectionately and herself offered her a seat.
इहासीना सुखं सर्वमाख्याहि मम तत्त्वतः ।
क्रूरस्य निश्चयं तस्य रावणस्य दुरात्मनः ॥१८॥
18. ihāsīnā sukhaṃ sarvamākhyāhi mama tattvataḥ ,
krūrasya niścayaṃ tasya rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ.
18. iha āsīnā sukham sarvam ākhyāhi mama tattvataḥ
krūrasya niścayam tasya rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ
18. iha āsīnā sukham sarvam tattvataḥ mama ākhyāhi,
tasya durātmanaḥ krūrasya rāvaṇasya niścayam [ca].
18. Sitting here comfortably, tell me everything truly, particularly the cruel decision of that evil-minded Rāvaṇa.
एवमुक्ता तु सरमा सीतया वेपमानया ।
कथितं सर्वमाचष्ट रावणस्य समन्त्रिणः ॥१९॥
19. evamuktā tu saramā sītayā vepamānayā ,
kathitaṃ sarvamācaṣṭa rāvaṇasya samantriṇaḥ.
19. evam uktā tu saramā sītayā vepamānayā
kathitam sarvam ācaṣṭa rāvaṇasya samantriṇaḥ
19. sītayā vepamānayā evam uktā tu saramā rāvaṇasya samantriṇaḥ kathitam sarvam ācaṣṭa.
19. Thus addressed by the trembling Sita, Sarama recounted everything that had been reported concerning Rāvaṇa and his ministers.
जनन्या राक्षसेन्द्रो वै त्वन्मोक्षार्थं बृहद्वचः ।
अविद्धेन च वैदेहि मन्त्रिवृद्धेन बोधितः ॥२०॥
20. jananyā rākṣasendro vai tvanmokṣārthaṃ bṛhadvacaḥ ,
aviddhena ca vaidehi mantrivṛddhena bodhitaḥ.
20. jananyā rākṣasendraḥ vai tvat-mokṣārtham bṛhat
vacaḥ aviddhena ca vaidehi mantrivṛddhena bodhitaḥ
20. O Vaidehī, the lord of rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa) was indeed advised with weighty words for your liberation (mokṣa), both by his mother and by a wise, aged minister.
दीयतामभिसत्कृत्य मनुजेन्द्राय मैथिली ।
निदर्शनं ते पर्याप्तं जनस्थाने यदद्भुतम् ॥२१॥
21. dīyatāmabhisatkṛtya manujendrāya maithilī ,
nidarśanaṃ te paryāptaṃ janasthāne yadadbhutam.
21. dīyatām abhisatkṛtya manujendrāya maithilī
nidarśanam te paryāptam janasthāne yat adbhutam
21. Having honored her, let Maithilī (Sītā) be returned to the lord of men (Rāma). The astonishing event that occurred in Janasthāna serves as a sufficient example for you.
लङ्घनं च समुद्रस्य दर्शनं च हनूमतः ।
वधं च रक्षसां युद्धे कः कुर्यान्मानुषो भुवि ॥२२॥
22. laṅghanaṃ ca samudrasya darśanaṃ ca hanūmataḥ ,
vadhaṃ ca rakṣasāṃ yuddhe kaḥ kuryānmānuṣo bhuvi.
22. laṅghanam ca samudrasya darśanam ca hanūmataḥ
vadham ca rakṣasām yuddhe kaḥ kuryāt mānuṣaḥ bhuvi
22. Who among mortals on earth could accomplish the crossing of the ocean, the sight of Hanūmān, and the slaying of rākṣasas in battle?
एवं स मन्त्रिवृद्धैश्च मात्रा च बहु भाषितः ।
न त्वामुत्सहते मोक्तुमर्तह्मर्थपरो यथा ॥२३॥
23. evaṃ sa mantrivṛddhaiśca mātrā ca bahu bhāṣitaḥ ,
na tvāmutsahate moktumartahmarthaparo yathā.
23. evam saḥ mantrivṛddhaiḥ ca mātrā ca bahu bhāṣitaḥ
na tvām utsahate moktum artahmarthaparaḥ yathā
23. Thus, though he was much advised by his aged ministers and by his mother, he does not dare to release you, just as one solely intent on gain (does not relinquish possessions).
नोत्सहत्यमृतो मोक्तुं युद्धे त्वामिति मैथिलि ।
सामात्यस्य नृशंसस्य निश्चयो ह्येष वर्तते ॥२४॥
24. notsahatyamṛto moktuṃ yuddhe tvāmiti maithili ,
sāmātyasya nṛśaṃsasya niścayo hyeṣa vartate.
24. na utsahati amṛtaḥ moktum yuddhe tvām iti maithili
sa-āmātyasya nṛśaṃsasya niścayaḥ hi eṣa vartate
24. maithili na amṛtaḥ yuddhe tvām moktum utsahati
sa-āmātyasya nṛśaṃsasya eṣaḥ niścayaḥ hi vartate
24. O Maithili, he, while not yet dead, does not dare to release you in battle. Indeed, this is the firm resolve of that cruel one, along with his ministers.
तदेषा सुस्थिरा बुद्धिर्मृत्युलोभादुपस्थिता ।
भयान्न शक्तस्त्वां मोक्तुमनिरस्तस्तु संयुगे ।
राक्षसानां च सर्वेषामात्मनश्च वधेन हि ॥२५॥
25. tadeṣā susthirā buddhirmṛtyulobhādupasthitā ,
bhayānna śaktastvāṃ moktumanirastastu saṃyuge ,
rākṣasānāṃ ca sarveṣāmātmanaśca vadhena hi.
25. tat eṣā su-sthirā buddhiḥ mṛtyu-lobhāt
upasthitā bhayāt na śaktaḥ tvām
moktum a-nirastaḥ tu saṃyuge rākṣasānām
ca sarveṣām ātmanaḥ ca vadhena hi
25. tat eṣā su-sthirā buddhiḥ mṛtyu-lobhāt upasthitā (saḥ) bhayāt tvām moktum na śaktaḥ,
tu saṃyuge a-nirastaḥ hi rākṣasānām ca sarveṣām ātmanaḥ ca vadhena (bhavati)
25. Therefore, this exceedingly firm resolve (buddhi) has manifested due to his greed (lobha) for his own demise. He is unable to release you out of fear, and he will not be overthrown (anirasta) in battle without the destruction of all the rākṣasas and indeed, his own.
निहत्य रावणं संख्ये सर्वथा निशितैः शरैः ।
प्रतिनेष्यति रामस्त्वामयोध्यामसितेक्षणे ॥२६॥
26. nihatya rāvaṇaṃ saṃkhye sarvathā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
pratineṣyati rāmastvāmayodhyāmasitekṣaṇe.
26. nihatya rāvaṇam saṃkhye sarvathā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
prati-neṣyati rāmaḥ tvām ayodhyām asita-īkṣaṇe
26. asita-īkṣaṇe rāmaḥ saṃkhye rāvaṇam niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
sarvathā nihatya tvām ayodhyām prati-neṣyati
26. O dark-eyed one, having completely slain Rāvaṇa in battle with his sharp arrows, Rāma will lead you back to Ayodhyā.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे शब्दो भेरीशङ्खसमाकुलः ।
श्रुतो वै सर्वसैन्यानां कम्पयन्धरणीतलम् ॥२७॥
27. etasminnantare śabdo bherīśaṅkhasamākulaḥ ,
śruto vai sarvasainyānāṃ kampayandharaṇītalam.
27. etasmin antare śabdaḥ bherī-śaṅkha-sam-ākulaḥ
śrutaḥ vai sarva-sainyānām kampayan dharaṇī-talam
27. etasmin antare bherī-śaṅkha-sam-ākulaḥ śabdaḥ
dharaṇī-talam kampayan sarva-sainyānām śrutaḥ vai
27. At this moment, a sound, tumultuous with the clamor of drums and conches, was indeed heard by all the armies, causing the surface of the earth to tremble.
श्रुत्वा तु तं वानरसैन्यशब्दं लङ्कागता राक्षसराजभृत्याः ।
नष्टौजसो दैन्यपरीतचेष्टाः श्रेयो न पश्यन्ति नृपस्य दोषैः ॥२८॥
28. śrutvā tu taṃ vānarasainyaśabdaṃ laṅkāgatā rākṣasarājabhṛtyāḥ ,
naṣṭaujaso dainyaparītaceṣṭāḥ śreyo na paśyanti nṛpasya doṣaiḥ.
28. śrutvā tu tam vānarasainyaśabdam
laṅkāgatāḥ rākṣasarājabhṛtyāḥ
naṣṭaujasaḥ dainyaparītaceṣṭāḥ
śreyaḥ na paśyanti nṛpasya doṣaiḥ
28. tu tam vānarasainyaśabdam śrutvā
laṅkāgatāḥ rākṣasarājabhṛtyāḥ
naṣṭaujasaḥ dainyaparītaceṣṭāḥ
nṛpasya doṣaiḥ śreyaḥ na paśyanti
28. Upon hearing that sound of the monkey army, the servants of the demon king residing in Laṅkā, having lost their strength and overwhelmed by despair, could not foresee any prosperity for their king, owing to his many flaws.
