1. On the very day the king performed that excellent cow-giving (godāna) (ceremony), on that same day, the heroic Yudhajit arrived.
पुत्रः केकयराजस्य साक्षाद्भरतमातुलः ।
दृष्ट्वा पृष्ट्वा च कुशलं राजानमिदमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. putraḥ kekayarājasya sākṣādbharatamātulaḥ ,

2. Bharata's own maternal uncle, the son of the King of Kekaya, having met the king and inquired about his well-being, spoke the following words.
केकयाधिपती राजा स्नेहात् कुशलमब्रवीत् ।
येषां कुशलकामो ऽसि तेषां संप्रत्यनामयम् ॥३॥
3. kekayādhipatī rājā snehāt kuśalamabravīt ,
yeṣāṃ kuśalakāmo'si teṣāṃ saṃpratyanāmayam.

3. The king, the ruler of the Kekayas, out of affection, asked about his well-being. [He then said]: 'For those whose well-being you desire, all is well at present.'
स्वस्रीयं मम राजेन्द्र द्रष्टुकामो महीपते ।
तदर्थमुपयातो ऽहमयोध्यां रघुनन्दन ॥४॥
4. svasrīyaṃ mama rājendra draṣṭukāmo mahīpate ,
tadarthamupayāto'hamayodhyāṃ raghunandana.

4. O King of kings, O ruler of the earth, O scion of Raghu, I have come to Ayodhya for the purpose of seeing my nephew.
श्रुत्वा त्वहमयोध्यायां विवाहार्थं तवात्मजान् ।
मिथिलामुपयातास्तु त्वया सह महीपते ।
त्वरयाभ्युपयातो ऽहं द्रष्टुकामः स्वसुः सुतम् ॥५॥
5. śrutvā tvahamayodhyāyāṃ vivāhārthaṃ tavātmajān ,
mithilāmupayātāstu tvayā saha mahīpate ,
tvarayābhyupayāto'haṃ draṣṭukāmaḥ svasuḥ sutam.
5. śrutvā tu aham ayodhyāyām vivāhārtham
tava ātmajān mithilām upayātāḥ tu

5. mahīpate,
aham tu ayodhyāyām śrutvā tava ātmajān vivāhārtham tvayā saha mithilām upayātāḥ,
aham svasuḥ sutam draṣṭukāmaḥ tvarayā abhyupayātaḥ.
5. However, O lord of the earth, when I heard in Ayodhya that your sons had gone to Mithila along with you for their marriage, I quickly set out, desiring to see my sister's son.
अथ राजा दशरथः प्रियातिथिमुपस्थिम ।
दृष्ट्वा परमसत्कारैः पूजार्हं समपूजयत् ॥६॥
6. atha rājā daśarathaḥ priyātithimupasthima ,
dṛṣṭvā paramasatkāraiḥ pūjārhaṃ samapūjayat.

6. Then King Dasharatha, upon seeing the dear guest who had arrived and was truly worthy of reverence, honored him with supreme hospitality.
ततस्तामुषितो रात्रिं सह पुत्रैर्महात्मभिः ।
ऋषींस्तदा पुरस्कृत्य यज्ञवाटमुपागमत् ॥७॥
7. tatastāmuṣito rātriṃ saha putrairmahātmabhiḥ ,
ṛṣīṃstadā puraskṛtya yajñavāṭamupāgamat.
7. tataḥ tām uṣitaḥ rātrim saha putraiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
ṛṣīn tadā puraskṛtya yajñavāṭam upāgamat

7. Thereafter, having spent that night with his great-souled sons, and then placing the sages (ṛṣi) at the forefront, he approached the sacrificial enclosure (yajñavāṭa).
युक्ते मुहूर्ते विजये सर्वाभरणभूषितैः ।
भ्रातृभिः सहितो रामः कृतकौतुकमङ्गलः ।
वसिष्ठं पुरतः कृत्वा महर्षीनपरानपि ॥८॥
8. yukte muhūrte vijaye sarvābharaṇabhūṣitaiḥ ,
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito rāmaḥ kṛtakautukamaṅgalaḥ ,
vasiṣṭhaṃ purataḥ kṛtvā maharṣīnaparānapi.

9. The venerable sage Vasishtha, having arrived, said this to the King of Videha.
राजा दशरथो राजन् कृतकौतुकमङ्गलैः ।
पुत्रैर्नरवरश्रेष्ठ दातारमभिकाङ्क्षते ॥१०॥
10. rājā daśaratho rājan kṛtakautukamaṅgalaiḥ ,
putrairnaravaraśreṣṭha dātāramabhikāṅkṣate.
10. rājā daśarathaḥ rājan kṛtakautukamaṅgalaiḥ
putraiḥ naravaraśreṣṭha dātāram abhikāṅkṣate
10. rājan naravaraśreṣṭha rājā daśarathaḥ
kṛtakautukamaṅgalaiḥ putraiḥ dātāram abhikāṅkṣate
10. O King (rājan), O best among men (naravaraśreṣṭha), King Dasharatha, along with his sons for whom auspicious ceremonies have been performed, desires a giver (of a bride).
दातृप्रतिग्रहीतृभ्यां सर्वार्थाः प्रभवन्ति हि ।
स्वधर्मं प्रतिपद्यस्व कृत्वा वैवाह्यमुत्तमम् ॥११॥
11. dātṛpratigrahītṛbhyāṃ sarvārthāḥ prabhavanti hi ,
svadharmaṃ pratipadyasva kṛtvā vaivāhyamuttamam.
11. dātṛpratigrahītṛbhyām sarvārthāḥ prabhavanti hi
svadharmam pratipadyasva kṛtvā vaivāhyam uttamam
11. hi dātṛpratigrahītṛbhyām sarvārthāḥ prabhavanti.
uttamam vaivāhyam kṛtvā svadharmam pratipadyasva.
11. Indeed, all matters (sarvārthāḥ) are accomplished through both the giver and the receiver. Therefore, you should perform your own duty (svadharma) by completing this excellent marriage ceremony.
इत्युक्तः परमोदारो वसिष्ठेन महात्मना ।
प्रत्युवाच महातेजा वाक्यं परमधर्मवित् ॥१२॥
12. ityuktaḥ paramodāro vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā ,
pratyuvāca mahātejā vākyaṃ paramadharmavit.
12. iti uktaḥ paramodāraḥ vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā
pratyuvāca mahātejāḥ vākyam paramadharmavit
12. vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā iti uktaḥ paramodāraḥ mahātejāḥ paramadharmavit vākyam pratyuvāca.
12. Thus addressed by the great-souled (mahātmanā) Vasiṣṭha, the extremely noble and greatly glorious (mahātejāḥ) one, who knew the supreme natural law (dharma), replied with these words.
कः स्थितः प्रतिहारो मे कस्याज्ञा संप्रतीक्ष्यते ।
स्वगृहे को विचारो ऽस्ति यथा राज्यमिदं तव ॥१३॥
13. kaḥ sthitaḥ pratihāro me kasyājñā saṃpratīkṣyate ,
svagṛhe ko vicāro'sti yathā rājyamidaṃ tava.
13. kaḥ sthitaḥ pratihāraḥ me kasya ājñā sampratīkṣyate
svagṛhe kaḥ vicāraḥ asti yathā rājyam idam tava
13. me kaḥ pratihāraḥ sthitaḥ,
kasya ājñā sampratīkṣyate? svagṛhe kaḥ vicāraḥ asti? yathā idam tava rājyam.
13. Who acts as my doorkeeper, and whose command (ājñā) is awaited? What deliberation (vicāraḥ) is needed in what is like your own home (svagṛhe)? Indeed, this entire kingdom is yours.
कृतकौतुकसर्वस्वा वेदिमूलमुपागताः ।
मम कन्या मुनिश्रेष्ठ दीप्ता वह्नेरिवार्चिषः ॥१४॥
14. kṛtakautukasarvasvā vedimūlamupāgatāḥ ,
mama kanyā muniśreṣṭha dīptā vahnerivārciṣaḥ.
14. kṛtakautukasarvasvāḥ vedi-mūlam upāgatāḥ mama
kanyāḥ muni-śreṣṭha dīptāḥ vahneḥ iva arciṣaḥ
14. muniśreṣṭha mama kanyāḥ kṛtakautukasarvasvāḥ
vahneḥ arciṣaḥ iva dīptāḥ vedi-mūlam upāgatāḥ
14. O best of sages, my daughters, for whom all auspicious rites have been performed, have arrived at the base of the altar, shining like bright flames of fire.
सज्जो ऽहं त्वत्प्रतीक्षो ऽस्मि वेद्यामस्यां प्रतिष्ठितः ।
अविघ्नं कुरुतां राजा किमर्थं हि विलम्ब्यते ॥१५॥
15. sajjo'haṃ tvatpratīkṣo'smi vedyāmasyāṃ pratiṣṭhitaḥ ,
avighnaṃ kurutāṃ rājā kimarthaṃ hi vilambyate.
15. sajjaḥ aham tvat-pratīkṣaḥ asmi vedyām asyām pratiṣṭhitaḥ
avighnam kurutām rājā kimartham hi vilambyate
15. aham sajjaḥ tvat-pratīkṣaḥ asyām vedyām pratiṣṭhitaḥ asmi.
rājā avighnam kurutām.
kimartham hi vilambyate?
15. I am ready, waiting for you, situated on this altar. May the king ensure there are no obstacles. Why indeed is there a delay?
तद्वाक्यं जनकेनोक्तं श्रुत्वा दशरथस्तदा ।
प्रवेशयामास सुतान् सर्वानृषिगणानपि ॥१६॥
16. tadvākyaṃ janakenoktaṃ śrutvā daśarathastadā ,
praveśayāmāsa sutān sarvānṛṣigaṇānapi.
16. tat vākyam janakena uktam śrutvā daśarathaḥ
tadā praveśayāmāsa sutān sarvān ṛṣi-gaṇān api
16. daśarathaḥ tadā janakena uktam tat vākyam
śrutvā sarvān sutān api ṛṣi-gaṇān praveśayāmāsa
16. Having heard that statement uttered by Janaka, Daśaratha then brought in all his sons and also the assembled sages.
अब्रवीज्जनको राजा कौसल्यानन्दवर्धनम् ।
इयं सीता मम सुता सहधर्मचरी तव ।
प्रतीच्छ चैनां भद्रं ते पाणिं गृह्णीष्व पाणिना ॥१७॥
17. abravījjanako rājā kausalyānandavardhanam ,
iyaṃ sītā mama sutā sahadharmacarī tava ,
pratīccha caināṃ bhadraṃ te pāṇiṃ gṛhṇīṣva pāṇinā.

iyam sītā mama sutā
saha-dharma-carī tava pratīccha ca enām
bhadram te pāṇim gṛhṇīṣva pāṇinā
17. rājā janakaḥ kausalyānandavardhanam abravīt: "iyam mama sutā sītā tava sahadharmacarī.

"
17. King Janaka said to him who increases Kauśalyā's joy (Rāma): 'This Sītā, my daughter, is your companion in natural law (dharma). Accept her. May there be welfare for you. Take her hand with your own hand.'
लक्ष्मणागच्छ भद्रं ते ऊर्मिलामुद्यतां मया ।
प्रतीच्छ पाणिं गृह्णीष्व मा भूत् कालस्य पर्ययः ॥१८॥
18. lakṣmaṇāgaccha bhadraṃ te ūrmilāmudyatāṃ mayā ,
pratīccha pāṇiṃ gṛhṇīṣva mā bhūt kālasya paryayaḥ.
18. lakṣmaṇa āgaccha bhadram te ūrmilām udyatām mayā
pratīccha pāṇim gṛhṇīṣva mā bhūt kālasya paryayaḥ
18. lakṣmaṇa āgaccha bhadram te.
mayā udyatām ūrmilām pratīccha.

18. Lakshmana, come! May good fortune be upon you. Accept Urmila, whom I offer. Take her hand; let there be no delay.
तमेवमुक्त्वा जनको भरतं चाभ्यभाषत ।
गृहाण पाणिं माण्डव्याः पाणिना रघुनन्दन ॥१९॥
19. tamevamuktvā janako bharataṃ cābhyabhāṣata ,
gṛhāṇa pāṇiṃ māṇḍavyāḥ pāṇinā raghunandana.
19. tam evam uktvā janakaḥ bharatam ca abhyabhāṣata
gṛhāṇa pāṇim māṇḍavyāḥ pāṇinā raghunandana
19. janakaḥ tam evam uktvā ca bharatam abhyabhāṣata.
"raghunandana,
māṇḍavyāḥ pāṇim pāṇinā gṛhāṇa.
"
19. Having spoken thus to him (Lakshmana), Janaka then addressed Bharata: "O delighter of the Raghu lineage, take Mandavi's hand with your hand."
शत्रुघ्नं चापि धर्मात्मा अब्रवीज्जनकेश्वरः ।
श्रुतकीर्त्या महाबाहो पाणिं गृह्णीष्व पाणिना ॥२०॥
20. śatrughnaṃ cāpi dharmātmā abravījjanakeśvaraḥ ,
śrutakīrtyā mahābāho pāṇiṃ gṛhṇīṣva pāṇinā.
20. śatrughnam ca api dharmātmā abravīt janakeśvaraḥ
śrutakīrtyā mahābāho pāṇim gṛhṇīṣva pāṇinā
20. ca api dharmātmā janakeśvaraḥ śatrughnam abravīt.
"mahābāho,
śrutakīrtyā pāṇim pāṇinā gṛhṇīṣva.
"
20. And the righteous (dharma) King Janaka also spoke to Shatrughna: "O mighty-armed one, take Shrutakirti's hand with your own hand."
सर्वे भवन्तः संयाश्च सर्वे सुचरितव्रताः ।
पत्नीभिः सन्तु काकुत्स्था मा भूत् कालस्य पर्ययः ॥२१॥
21. sarve bhavantaḥ saṃyāśca sarve sucaritavratāḥ ,
patnībhiḥ santu kākutsthā mā bhūt kālasya paryayaḥ.
21. sarve bhavantaḥ saṃyāḥ ca sarve sucaritavratāḥ
patnībhiḥ santu kākutsthāḥ mā bhūt kālasya paryayaḥ
21. kākutsthāḥ,
sarve bhavantaḥ saṃyāḥ ca sarve sucaritavratāḥ patnībhiḥ santu.
kālasya paryayaḥ mā bhūt.
21. O scions of Kakutstha, may all of you, having gathered here, and all of you, who have observed excellent vows (vrata), be united with your wives. Let there be no delay.
जनकस्य वचः श्रुत्वा पाणीन्पाणिभिरस्पृशन् ।
चत्वारस्ते चतसृणां वसिष्ठस्य मते स्थिताः ॥२२॥
22. janakasya vacaḥ śrutvā pāṇīnpāṇibhiraspṛśan ,
catvāraste catasṛṇāṃ vasiṣṭhasya mate sthitāḥ.
22. janakasya vacaḥ śrutvā pāṇīn pāṇibhiḥ aspṛśan
catvāraḥ te catasṛṇām vasiṣṭhasya mate sthitāḥ
22. janakasya vacaḥ śrutvā vasiṣṭhasya mate sthitāḥ

22. Upon hearing Janaka's words, those four (princes), abiding by the counsel of Vasiṣṭha, clasped the hands of the four (brides) with their own hands.
अग्निं प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा वेदिं राजानमेव च ।
ऋषींश्चैव महात्मानः सह भार्या रघूत्तमाः ।
यथोक्तेन तथा चक्रुर्विवाहं विधिपूर्वकम् ॥२३॥
23. agniṃ pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā vediṃ rājānameva ca ,
ṛṣīṃścaiva mahātmānaḥ saha bhāryā raghūttamāḥ ,
yathoktena tathā cakrurvivāhaṃ vidhipūrvakam.
23. agnim pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā vedim rājānam
eva ca ṛṣīn ca eva mahātmānaḥ saha
bhāryāḥ raghūttamāḥ yathā uktena
tathā cakruḥ vivāham vidhipūrvakam
23. mahātmānaḥ raghūttamāḥ saha bhāryāḥ
agnim vedim rājānam eva ca ṛṣīn ca
eva pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā yathā uktena
tathā vidhipūrvakam vivāham cakruḥ
23. The great-souled (mahātmānaḥ) princes, the best of Raghu's lineage (raghūttamāḥ), along with their wives, having circumambulated the fire, the altar, the king, and indeed the sages (ṛṣīn), then performed the marriage according to what was stated and by prescribed rituals.
पुष्पवृष्टिर्महत्यासीदन्तरिक्षात् सुभास्वरा ।
दिव्यदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैर्गीतवादित्रनिस्वनैः ॥२४॥
24. puṣpavṛṣṭirmahatyāsīdantarikṣāt subhāsvarā ,
divyadundubhinirghoṣairgītavāditranisvanaiḥ.
24. puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ mahatī āsīt antarikṣāt subhāsvarā
divyaduṃdubhinirghoṣaiḥ gītavāditranisvanaiḥ
24. antarikṣāt mahatī subhāsvarā puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ āsīt
divyaduṃdubhinirghoṣaiḥ gītavāditranisvanaiḥ
24. A great and exceedingly brilliant shower of flowers fell from the sky, accompanied by the resounding noise of divine drums and the sounds of song and musical instruments.
ननृतुश्चाप्सरःसंघा गन्धर्वाश्च जगुः कलम् ।
विवाहे रघुमुख्यानां तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥२५॥
25. nanṛtuścāpsaraḥsaṃghā gandharvāśca jaguḥ kalam ,
vivāhe raghumukhyānāṃ tadadbhutamivābhavat.
25. nanṛtuḥ ca apsaraḥsaṃghāḥ gandharvāḥ ca jaguḥ kalam
vivāhe raghumukhyānām tat adbhutam iva abhavat
25. apsaraḥsaṃghāḥ ca nanṛtuḥ gandharvāḥ ca kalam jaguḥ
raghumukhyānām vivāhe tat adbhutam iva abhavat
25. And groups of Apsaras danced, while the Gandharvas sang sweetly. At the marriage of the chief princes of Raghu's lineage, it was as if a miracle (adbhutam) had occurred.
ईदृशे वर्तमाने तु तूर्योद्घुष्टनिनादिते ।
त्रिरग्निं ते परिक्रम्य ऊहुर्भार्या महौजसः ॥२६॥
26. īdṛśe vartamāne tu tūryodghuṣṭaninādite ,
triragniṃ te parikramya ūhurbhāryā mahaujasaḥ.
26. īdṛśe vartamāne tu tūryaudghuṣṭaninādite triḥ
agnim te parikramya ūhuḥ bhāryāḥ mahaujasaḥ
26. te mahaujasaḥ īdṛśe vartamāne tūryaudghuṣṭaninādite
(sati) agnim triḥ parikramya bhāryāḥ ūhuḥ
26. While this event was occurring, amidst the resounding trumpets, those greatly energetic men, having circumambulated the fire three times, took their wives.
अथोपकार्यां जग्मुस्ते सदारा रघुनन्दनः ।
राजाप्यनुययौ पश्यन् सर्षिसंघः सबान्धवः ॥२७॥
27. athopakāryāṃ jagmuste sadārā raghunandanaḥ ,
rājāpyanuyayau paśyan sarṣisaṃghaḥ sabāndhavaḥ.
27. atha upakāryām jagmuḥ te sadārāḥ raghunandanaḥ
rājā api anuyayau paśyan saṛṣisaṃghaḥ sabāndhavaḥ
27. atha te raghunandanaḥ sadārāḥ upakāryām jagmuḥ
rājā api saṛṣisaṃghaḥ sabāndhavaḥ paśyan anuyayau
27. Then, the sons of Raghu, along with their wives, went to the reception hall. The king (Janaka) also followed, observing the scene, accompanied by the assembly of sages and his relatives.
