अथ तौ देशकालज्ञौ राजपुत्रावरिंदमौ ।
देशे काले च वाक्यज्ञावब्रूतां कौशिकं वचः ॥१॥
1. atha tau deśakālajñau rājaputrāvariṃdamau ,
deśe kāle ca vākyajñāvabrūtāṃ kauśikaṃ vacaḥ.

1. Then, those two princes, suppressors of enemies, knowledgeable of place and time, and knowing what to say, spoke these words to Kauśika (Viśvāmitra) at the right place and time.
भगवञ् श्रोतुमिच्छावो यस्मिन् काले निशाचरौ ।
संरक्षणीयौ तौ ब्रह्मन्नातिवर्तेत तत्क्षणम् ॥२॥
2. bhagavañ śrotumicchāvo yasmin kāle niśācarau ,
saṃrakṣaṇīyau tau brahmannātivarteta tatkṣaṇam.
2. bhagavan śrotum icchāvaḥ yasmin kāle niśā-carau
saṃrakṣaṇīyau tau brahman na ativarteta tat-kṣaṇam
2. bhagavan brahman,
yasmin kāle tau niśā-carau saṃrakṣaṇīyau (staḥ),
(tat) śrotum icchāvaḥ.
tat-kṣaṇam na ativarteta
2. “O Venerable One, O Brahmin, we wish to hear at what time the two night-stalkers should be protected (from harming your yajña). That moment should not be delayed.”
एवं ब्रुवाणौ काकुत्स्थौ त्वरमाणौ युयुत्सया ।
सर्वे ते मुनयः प्रीताः प्रशशंसुर्नृपात्मजौ ॥३॥
3. evaṃ bruvāṇau kākutsthau tvaramāṇau yuyutsayā ,
sarve te munayaḥ prītāḥ praśaśaṃsurnṛpātmajau.
3. evam bruvāṇau kākutsthau tvaramāṇau yuyutsayā
sarve te munayaḥ prītāḥ praśaśaṃsuḥ nṛpa-ātmajau
3. evam yuyutsayā tvaramāṇau bruvāṇau (tau) kākutsthau,

3. When the two Kakutstha princes, speaking thus with eagerness to fight, (said this), all those sages, pleased, praised the two sons of the king.
अद्य प्रभृति षड्रात्रं रक्षतं राघवौ युवाम् ।
दीक्षां गतो ह्येष मुनिर्मौनित्वं च गमिष्यति ॥४॥
4. adya prabhṛti ṣaḍrātraṃ rakṣataṃ rāghavau yuvām ,
dīkṣāṃ gato hyeṣa munirmaunitvaṃ ca gamiṣyati.
4. adya prabhṛti ṣaḍrātrām rakṣatam rāghavau yuvām
dīkṣām gataḥ hi eṣaḥ muniḥ maunitvam ca gamiṣyati
4. yuvām rāghavau adya prabhṛti ṣaḍrātrām rakṣatam
hi eṣaḥ muniḥ dīkṣām gataḥ ca maunitvam gamiṣyati
4. From today onwards, for six nights, you two Raghava brothers must protect (this place). For this sage has entered into a ritual initiation (dīkṣā) and will observe a vow of silence.
तौ तु तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राजपुत्रौ यशस्विनौ ।
अनिद्रौ षडहोरात्रं तपोवनमरक्षताम् ॥५॥
5. tau tu tadvacanaṃ śrutvā rājaputrau yaśasvinau ,
anidrau ṣaḍahorātraṃ tapovanamarakṣatām.

anidrau ṣaḍahorātrām tapovanam arakṣatām

5. Those two glorious princes, having heard his words, protected the hermitage for six days and nights without sleeping.
उपासां चक्रतुर्वीरौ यत्तौ परमधन्विनौ ।
ररक्षतुर्मुनिवरं विश्वामित्रमरिंदमौ ॥६॥
6. upāsāṃ cakraturvīrau yattau paramadhanvinau ,
rarakṣaturmunivaraṃ viśvāmitramariṃdamau.

rarakṣatuḥ munivaram viśvāmitram arindamau

6. The two heroic, attentive, and supreme archers, those subduers of foes, attended upon and protected the best of sages, Vishvamitra.
अथ काले गते तस्मिन् षष्ठे ऽहनि समागते ।
सौमित्रमब्रवीद् रामो यत्तो भव समाहितः ॥७॥
7. atha kāle gate tasmin ṣaṣṭhe'hani samāgate ,
saumitramabravīd rāmo yatto bhava samāhitaḥ.
7. atha kāle gate tasmin ṣaṣṭhe ahani samāgate
saumitram abravīt rāmaḥ yattaḥ bhava samāhitaḥ
7. atha tasmin kāle gate ṣaṣṭhe ahani samāgate

7. Then, when that time had passed and the sixth day arrived, Rama said to Saumitra (Lakshmana), "Be attentive and composed."
रामस्यैवं ब्रुवाणस्य त्वरितस्य युयुत्सया ।
प्रजज्वाल ततो वेदिः सोपाध्यायपुरोहिता ॥८॥
8. rāmasyaivaṃ bruvāṇasya tvaritasya yuyutsayā ,
prajajvāla tato vediḥ sopādhyāyapurohitā.
8. rāmasya evam bruvāṇasya tvaritasya yuyutsayā
prajajvāla tataḥ vediḥ sa-upādhyāya-purohitā
8. rāmasya evam bruvāṇasya tvaritasya yuyutsayā
tataḥ sa-upādhyāya-purohitā vediḥ prajajvāla
8. As Rāma, eager to fight, spoke in this manner, the sacrificial altar, accompanied by the preceptor and the priest, suddenly blazed up.
मन्त्रवच्च यथान्यायं यज्ञो ऽसौ संप्रवर्तते ।
आकाशे च महाञ् शब्दः प्रादुरासीद्भयानकः ॥९॥
9. mantravacca yathānyāyaṃ yajño'sau saṃpravartate ,
ākāśe ca mahāñ śabdaḥ prādurāsīdbhayānakaḥ.
9. mantravat ca yathānyāyam yajñaḥ asau sam-pravartate
ākāśe ca mahān śabdaḥ prādura-āsīt bhayānakaḥ
9. ca asau yajñaḥ mantravat ca yathānyāyam sam-pravartate
ākāśe ca mahān bhayānakaḥ śabdaḥ prādura-āsīt
9. And this sacrificial ritual (yajña) was being performed according to the sacred verses and proper procedure. Also, a great and terrifying sound arose in the sky.
आवार्य गगनं मेघो यथा प्रावृषि निर्गतः ।
तथा मायां विकुर्वाणौ राक्षसावभ्यधावताम् ॥१०॥
10. āvārya gaganaṃ megho yathā prāvṛṣi nirgataḥ ,
tathā māyāṃ vikurvāṇau rākṣasāvabhyadhāvatām.
10. āvārya gaganaṃ meghaḥ yathā prāvṛṣi nirgataḥ
tathā māyām vikurvāṇau rākṣasau abhi-a-dhāvatām
10. yathā meghaḥ gaganaṃ āvārya prāvṛṣi nirgataḥ
tathā māyām vikurvāṇau rākṣasau abhi-a-dhāvatām
10. Just as a cloud, having covered the sky, emerges during the rainy season, similarly, two demons, displaying their magical illusion (māyā), rushed forth.
मारीचश्च सुबाहुश्च तयोरनुचरास्तथा ।
आगम्य भीमसंकाशा रुधिरौघानवासृजन् ॥११॥
11. mārīcaśca subāhuśca tayoranucarāstathā ,
āgamya bhīmasaṃkāśā rudhiraughānavāsṛjan.
11. mārīcaḥ ca subāhuḥ ca tayoḥ anucarāḥ tathā
āgamya bhīmasaṃkāśāḥ rudhira-oghān ava-asṛjan
11. ca mārīcaḥ ca subāhuḥ tathā tayoḥ anucarāḥ
āgamya bhīmasaṃkāśāḥ rudhira-oghān ava-asṛjan
11. Mārīca and Subāhu, along with their followers, having arrived, and appearing terrifying, discharged torrents of blood.
तावापतन्तौ सहसा दृष्ट्वा राजीवलोचनः ।
लक्ष्मणं त्वभिसंप्रेक्ष्य रामो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१२॥
12. tāvāpatantau sahasā dṛṣṭvā rājīvalocanaḥ ,
lakṣmaṇaṃ tvabhisaṃprekṣya rāmo vacanamabravīt.
12. tāu āpatantau sahasā dṛṣṭvā rājīvalocanaḥ
lakṣmaṇam tu abhisaṃprekṣya rāmaḥ vacanam abravīt
12. rāmaḥ rājīvalocanaḥ tāu sahasā āpatantau dṛṣṭvā,
tu lakṣmaṇam abhisaṃprekṣya,
vacanam abravīt
12. Seeing those two (demons) suddenly approaching, the lotus-eyed Rāma, looking towards Lakṣmaṇa, spoke these words.
पश्य लक्ष्मण दुर्वृत्तान् राक्षसान्पिशिताशनान् ।
मानवास्त्रसमाधूताननिलेन यथाघनान् ॥१३॥
13. paśya lakṣmaṇa durvṛttān rākṣasānpiśitāśanān ,
mānavāstrasamādhūtānanilena yathāghanān.
13. paśya lakṣmaṇa durvṛttān rākṣasān piśitāśanān
mānavāstrasamādhūtān anilena yathā ghanān
13. lakṣmaṇa,
paśya durvṛttān piśitāśanān rākṣasān,
mānavāstrasamādhūtān,
yathā ghanān anilena
13. "Behold, Lakṣmaṇa, these wicked, flesh-eating demons (rākṣasas), scattered by the Manava missile just as clouds are dispersed by the wind."
मानवं परमोदारमस्त्रं परमभास्वरम् ।
चिक्षेप परमक्रुद्धो मारीचोरसि राघवः ॥१४॥
14. mānavaṃ paramodāramastraṃ paramabhāsvaram ,
cikṣepa paramakruddho mārīcorasi rāghavaḥ.
14. mānavam paramodāram astram paramabhāsvaram
cikṣepa paramakruddhaḥ mārīca urasi rāghavaḥ
14. paramakruddhaḥ rāghavaḥ,
paramodāram paramabhāsvaram mānavam astram mārīca urasi cikṣepa
14. Supremely enraged, Rāghava (Rāma) hurled the most excellent and supremely radiant Manava missile (astra) into Marīca's chest.
स तेन परमास्त्रेण मानवेन समाहितः ।
संपूर्णं योजनशतं क्षिप्तः सागरसंप्लवे ॥१५॥
15. sa tena paramāstreṇa mānavena samāhitaḥ ,
saṃpūrṇaṃ yojanaśataṃ kṣiptaḥ sāgarasaṃplave.
15. sa tena paramāstreṇa mānavena samāhitaḥ
sampūrṇam yojanaśatam kṣiptaḥ sāgarasaṃplave
15. sa tena mānavena paramāstreṇa samāhitaḥ,
sampūrṇam yojanaśatam sāgarasaṃplave kṣiptaḥ
15. Struck by that supreme Manava missile (astra), he (Marīca) was hurled a full hundred yojanas into the ocean (sāgara).
विचेतनं विघूर्णन्तं शीतेषुबलपीडितम् ।
निरस्तं दृश्य मारीचं रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत् ॥१६॥
16. vicetanaṃ vighūrṇantaṃ śīteṣubalapīḍitam ,
nirastaṃ dṛśya mārīcaṃ rāmo lakṣmaṇamabravīt.
16. vicetanam vighūrṇantam śiteṣubalapīḍitam
nirastam dṛśya mārīcam rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇam abravīt
16. rāmaḥ mārīcam vicetanam vighūrṇantam
śiteṣubalapīḍitam nirastam dṛśya lakṣmaṇam abravīt
16. When Rāma saw Mārīca unconscious, reeling, afflicted by the force of sharp arrows, and cast down to the ground, he spoke to Lakṣmaṇa.
पश्य लक्ष्मण शीतेषुं मानवं धर्मसंहितम् ।
मोहयित्वा नयत्येनं न च प्राणैर्वियुज्यते ॥१७॥
17. paśya lakṣmaṇa śīteṣuṃ mānavaṃ dharmasaṃhitam ,
mohayitvā nayatyenaṃ na ca prāṇairviyujyate.
17. paśya lakṣmaṇa śiteṣum mānavam dharmasaṃhitam
mohayitvā nayati enam na ca prāṇaiḥ viyujyate
17. lakṣmaṇa paśya śiteṣum mānavam dharmasaṃhitam
mohayitvā enam nayati ca na prāṇaiḥ viyujyate
17. "Observe, Lakṣmaṇa, this sharp arrow (śiteṣu), which is meant for human-like foes and functions according to its inherent natural law (dharma): it has merely bewildered him and carried him away, but he is not deprived of his life.
इमानपि वधिष्यामि निर्घृणान्दुष्टचारिणः ।
राक्षसान्पापकर्मस्थान्यज्ञघ्नान् रुधिराशनान् ॥१८॥
18. imānapi vadhiṣyāmi nirghṛṇānduṣṭacāriṇaḥ ,
rākṣasānpāpakarmasthānyajñaghnān rudhirāśanān.
18. imān api vadhiṣyāmi nirghṛṇān duṣṭacāriṇaḥ
rākṣasān pāpakarmasthānyajñaghnān rudhirāśanān
18. api imān nirghṛṇān duṣṭacāriṇaḥ rākṣasān
pāpakarmasthānyajñaghnān rudhirāśanān vadhiṣyāmi
18. I will also kill these merciless, evil-doing demons, whose actions are sinful and who obstruct Vedic rituals (yajña), and who devour blood.
विगृह्य सुमहच्चास्त्रमाग्नेयं रघुनन्दनः ।
सुबाहुरसि चिक्षेप स विद्धः प्रापतद्भुवि ॥१९॥
19. vigṛhya sumahaccāstramāgneyaṃ raghunandanaḥ ,
subāhurasi cikṣepa sa viddhaḥ prāpatadbhuvi.
19. vigṛhya sumahat ca astram āgneyam raghunandanaḥ
subāhuḥ asi cikṣepa sa viddhaḥ prāpatat bhuvi
19. raghunandanaḥ sumahat ca āgneyam astram vigṛhya
subāhuḥ asi cikṣepa sa viddhaḥ bhuvi prāpatat
19. Rāma (raghunandana), the joy of the Raghu dynasty, having taken up the very mighty Agneya missile, hurled it at Subāhu. Pierced by it, he (Subāhu) fell to the ground.
शेषान् वायव्यमादाय निजघान महायशाः ।
राघवः परमोदारो मुनीनां मुदमावहन् ॥२०॥
20. śeṣān vāyavyamādāya nijaghāna mahāyaśāḥ ,
rāghavaḥ paramodāro munīnāṃ mudamāvahan.
20. śeṣān vāyavyam ādāya nijaghāna mahāyaśāḥ
rāghavaḥ paramaudāraḥ munīnām mudam āvahan
20. rāghavaḥ mahāyaśāḥ paramaudāraḥ vāyavyam
ādāya śeṣān nijaghāna munīnām mudam āvahan
20. The greatly renowned (mahāyaśas) Rāghava, supremely noble, took the wind-weapon (vāyavya) and killed the remaining demons, thus bringing joy to the sages.
स हत्वा राक्षसान् सर्वान्यज्ञघ्नान् रघुनन्दनः ।
ऋषिभिः पूजितस्तत्र यथेन्द्रो विजये पुरा ॥२१॥
21. sa hatvā rākṣasān sarvānyajñaghnān raghunandanaḥ ,
ṛṣibhiḥ pūjitastatra yathendro vijaye purā.
21. saḥ hatvā rākṣasān sarvān yajñaghnān raghunandanaḥ
ṛṣibhiḥ pūjitaḥ tatra yathā indraḥ vijaye purā
21. raghunandanaḥ saḥ hatvā sarvān yajñaghnān rākṣasān
tatra ṛṣibhiḥ pūjitaḥ yathā purā vijaye indraḥ
21. Having killed all the demons, the obstructors of ritual Vedic rituals (yajña), Rāma (Raghunandana) was honored there by the sages, just as Indra was formerly worshipped in victory.
अथ यज्ञे समाप्ते तु विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
निरीतिका दिशो दृष्ट्वा काकुत्स्थमिदमब्रवीत् ॥२२॥
22. atha yajñe samāpte tu viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ ,
nirītikā diśo dṛṣṭvā kākutsthamidamabravīt.
22. atha yajñe samāpte tu viśvāmitraḥ mahāmuniḥ
nirītīkāḥ diśaḥ dṛṣṭvā kākutstham idam abravīt
22. atha tu yajñe samāpte viśvāmitraḥ mahāmuniḥ

22. Then, when the Vedic ritual (yajña) was completed, Vishvamitra, the great sage, seeing all directions free from danger, spoke these words to Kakutstha [Rama].
कृतार्थो ऽस्मि महाबाहो कृतं गुरुवचस्त्वया ।
सिद्धाश्रममिदं सत्यं कृतं राम महायशः ॥२३॥
23. kṛtārtho'smi mahābāho kṛtaṃ guruvacastvayā ,
siddhāśramamidaṃ satyaṃ kṛtaṃ rāma mahāyaśaḥ.
23. kṛtārthaḥ asmi mahābāho kṛtam guruvacaḥ tvayā
siddhāśramam idam satyam kṛtam rāma mahāyaśaḥ
23. mahābāho kṛtārthaḥ asmi tvayā guruvacaḥ kṛtam
rāma mahāyaśaḥ idam siddhāśramam satyam kṛtam
23. "O mighty-armed (mahābāhu) one, I am one whose purpose has been accomplished (kṛtārtha). The word of your preceptor (guru) has been fulfilled by you. O glorious (mahāyaśas) Rāma, this hermitage (āśrama) has truly become the Hermitage of Accomplishment (Siddhāśrama)."
