1. When Sugrīva had retired to the cave and the sky was freed from clouds, Rāma, who had spent the nights of the rainy season there, was greatly afflicted by both desire and sorrow.
पाण्डुरं गगनं दृष्ट्वा विमलं चन्द्रमण्डलम् ।
शारदीं रजनीं चैव दृष्ट्वा ज्योत्स्नानुलेपनाम् ॥२॥

2. Having seen the pale sky, the clear disc of the moon, and also the autumnal night imbued with moonlight,
कामवृत्तं च सुग्रीवं नष्टां च जनकात्मजाम् ।
बुद्ध्वा कालमतीतं च मुमोह परमातुरः ॥३॥
3. kāmavṛttaṃ ca sugrīvaṃ naṣṭāṃ ca janakātmajām ,
buddhvā kālamatītaṃ ca mumoha paramāturaḥ.

3. Having realized that Sugrīva was indulging in his desires, that Janaka's daughter (Sītā) was lost, and that much time had elapsed, he became extremely distressed and fainted.
स तु संज्ञामुपागम्य मुहूर्तान्मतिमान्पुनः ।
मनःस्थामपि वैदेहीं चिन्तयामास राघवः ॥४॥
4. sa tu saṃjñāmupāgamya muhūrtānmatimānpunaḥ ,
manaḥsthāmapi vaidehīṃ cintayāmāsa rāghavaḥ.

4. But that intelligent Rāghava (Rāma), having regained consciousness after a moment, again began to contemplate Vaidehī (Sītā), who resided (even then) in his mind.
आसीनः पर्वतस्याग्रे हेमधातुविभूषिते ।
शारदं गगनं दृष्ट्व जगाम मनसा प्रियाम् ॥५॥
5. āsīnaḥ parvatasyāgre hemadhātuvibhūṣite ,
śāradaṃ gaganaṃ dṛṣṭva jagāma manasā priyām.

5. Seated on the mountain peak, adorned with golden ores, he saw the autumnal sky and his mind went to his beloved.
दृष्ट्वा च विमलं व्योम गतविद्युद्बलाहकम् ।
सारसारवसंघुष्टं विललापार्तया गिरा ॥६॥
6. dṛṣṭvā ca vimalaṃ vyoma gatavidyudbalāhakam ,
sārasāravasaṃghuṣṭaṃ vilalāpārtayā girā.

6. Seeing the clear sky, now free of lightning and clouds, and resonating with the calls of cranes, he lamented with a distressed voice.
सारसारवसंनादैः सारसारवनादिनी ।
याश्रमे रमते बाला साद्य मे रमते कथम् ॥७॥
7. sārasāravasaṃnādaiḥ sārasāravanādinī ,
yāśrame ramate bālā sādya me ramate katham.

āśrame ramate bālā sā adya me ramate katham

7. With the resounding calls of cranes, that young woman whose voice echoed the calls of cranes, who used to delight in the hermitage (āśrama) - how can she bring me joy today?
पुष्पितांश्चासनान्दृष्ट्वा काञ्चनानिव निर्मलान् ।
कथं स रमते बाला पश्यन्ती मामपश्यती ॥८॥
8. puṣpitāṃścāsanāndṛṣṭvā kāñcanāniva nirmalān ,
kathaṃ sa ramate bālā paśyantī māmapaśyatī.
8. puṣpitān ca āsanān dṛṣṭvā kāñcanān iva nirmalān
katham sā ramate bālā paśyantī mām apaśyatī

8. And having seen the blooming āśana trees, as pure as gold, how can that young woman delight, she who sees (all this beauty) yet does not see me?
या पुरा कलहंसानां स्वरेण कलभाषिणी ।
बुध्यते चारुसर्वाङ्गी साद्य मे बुध्यते कथम् ॥९॥
9. yā purā kalahaṃsānāṃ svareṇa kalabhāṣiṇī ,
budhyate cārusarvāṅgī sādya me budhyate katham.

9. She, who formerly, with her sweet voice and beautiful body, used to awaken to the sound of swans, how can she possibly awaken for me today?
निःस्वनं चक्रवाकानां निशम्य सहचारिणाम् ।
पुण्डरीकविशालाक्षी कथमेषा भविष्यति ॥१०॥
10. niḥsvanaṃ cakravākānāṃ niśamya sahacāriṇām ,
puṇḍarīkaviśālākṣī kathameṣā bhaviṣyati.

puṇḍarīkaviśālākṣī katham eṣā bhaviṣyati

10. Having heard the cries of the ruddy geese, her companions (in suffering separation), how will she, with her wide lotus-like eyes, be?
सरांसि सरितो वापीः काननानि वनानि च ।
तां विना मृगशावाक्षीं चरन्नाद्य सुखं लभे ॥११॥
11. sarāṃsi sarito vāpīḥ kānanāni vanāni ca ,
tāṃ vinā mṛgaśāvākṣīṃ carannādya sukhaṃ labhe.
11. sarāṃsi saritaḥ vāpīḥ kānanāni vanāni ca tām
vinā mṛgaśāvākṣīm caran adya sukham labhe
11. adya tām mṛgaśāvākṣīm vinā sarāṃsi saritaḥ

11. Without her, the deer-eyed one, I find no happiness today while wandering through lakes, rivers, ponds, groves, and forests.
अपि तां मद्वियोगाच्च सौकुमार्याच्च भामिनीम् ।
न दूरं पीडयेत् कामः शरद्गुणनिरन्तरः ॥१२॥
12. api tāṃ madviyogācca saukumāryācca bhāminīm ,
na dūraṃ pīḍayet kāmaḥ śaradguṇanirantaraḥ.
12. api tām madviyogāt ca saukumāryāt ca bhāminīm
na dūram pīḍayet kāmaḥ śaradguṇanirantaraḥ
12. api śaradguṇanirantaraḥ kāmaḥ madviyogāt ca

12. May Kāma (desire), constantly intensified by autumnal qualities, not greatly torment that beautiful woman (bhāminī), especially due to her separation from me and her inherent delicacy.
एवमादि नरश्रेष्ठो विललाप नृपात्मजः ।
विहंग इव सारङ्गः सलिलं त्रिदशेश्वरात् ॥१३॥
13. evamādi naraśreṣṭho vilalāpa nṛpātmajaḥ ,
vihaṃga iva sāraṅgaḥ salilaṃ tridaśeśvarāt.
13. evamādi naraśreṣṭhaḥ vilalāpa nṛpātmajaḥ
vihaṅgaḥ iva sāraṅgaḥ salilam tridaśeśvarāt

13. Thus lamented the best among men, the son of the king, just as a cātaka bird (sāraṅgaḥ) longs for water from the lord of the gods (Indra).
ततश्चञ्चूर्य रम्येषु फलार्थी गिरिसानुषु ।
ददर्श पर्युपावृत्तो लक्ष्मीवांल् लक्ष्मणो ऽग्रजम् ॥१४॥
14. tataścañcūrya ramyeṣu phalārthī girisānuṣu ,
dadarśa paryupāvṛtto lakṣmīvāṃl lakṣmaṇo'grajam.
14. tataḥ cañcūrya ramyeṣu phalārthī girisānuṣu
dadarśa paryupāvṛttaḥ lakṣmīvān lakṣmaṇaḥ agrajam
14. tataḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ lakṣmīvān phalārthī ramyeṣu
girisānuṣu cañcūrya paryupāvṛttaḥ agrajam dadarśa
14. Then, the fortunate (lakṣmīvān) Lakṣmaṇa, having returned after roaming in the beautiful mountain slopes in search of fruits, saw his elder brother.
तं चिन्तया दुःसहया परीतं विसंज्ञमेकं विजने मनस्वी ।
भ्रातुर्विषादात् परितापदीनः समीक्ष्य सौमित्रिरुवाच रामम् ॥१५॥
15. taṃ cintayā duḥsahayā parītaṃ visaṃjñamekaṃ vijane manasvī ,
bhrāturviṣādāt paritāpadīnaḥ samīkṣya saumitriruvāca rāmam.
15. tam cintayā duḥsahayā parītam visaṃjñam ekam vijane manasvī
bhrātuḥ viṣādāt paritāpadīnaḥ samīkṣya saumitriḥ uvāca rāmam
15. manasvī saumitriḥ bhrātuḥ viṣādāt paritāpadīnaḥ vijane ekam
visaṃjñam duḥsahayā cintayā parītam tam samīkṣya rāmam uvāca
15. The noble-minded (manasvī) Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), distressed and weakened by his brother's despair (viṣāda), having observed him (Rāma) in a solitary place (vijane), alone and unconscious, completely overcome by unbearable anxiety, then spoke to Rāma.
किमार्य कामस्य वशंगतेन किमात्मपौरुष्यपराभवेन ।
अयं सदा संहृइयते समाधिः किमत्र योगेन निवर्तितेन ॥१६॥
16. kimārya kāmasya vaśaṃgatena kimātmapauruṣyaparābhavena ,
ayaṃ sadā saṃhṛiyate samādhiḥ kimatra yogena nivartitena.
16. kim ārya kāmasya vaśaṃgatena kim ātmapauruṣyaparābhavena
ayam sadā saṃhṛiyate samādhiḥ kim atra yogena nivartitena
16. ārya kāmasya vaśaṃgatena kim ātmapauruṣyaparābhavena kim
ayam samādhiḥ sadā saṃhṛiyate atra nivartitena yogena kim
16. O noble one, what good is it to be overcome by desire? What good is the defeat of one's own manliness? This concentration (samādhi) is always being diminished. What purpose is there in this spiritual discipline (yoga) that is abandoned?
क्रियाभियोगं मनसः प्रसादं समाधियोगानुगतं च कालम् ।
सहायसामर्थ्यमदीनसत्त्व स्वकर्महेतुं च कुरुष्व हेतुम् ॥१७॥
17. kriyābhiyogaṃ manasaḥ prasādaṃ samādhiyogānugataṃ ca kālam ,
sahāyasāmarthyamadīnasattva svakarmahetuṃ ca kuruṣva hetum.

sahāyasāmarthyam adīnasattva svakarmahetum ca kuruṣva hetum

17. O you of unwavering spirit (adīnasattva), make diligent application to action, clarity of mind, a time conducive to meditative practice (yoga), the strength of allies, and the specific motive for your own actions (karma), as the essential factors.
न जानकी मानववंशनाथ त्वया सनाथा सुलभा परेण ।
न चाग्निचूडां ज्वलितामुपेत्य न दह्यते वीरवरार्ह कश्चित् ॥१८॥
18. na jānakī mānavavaṃśanātha tvayā sanāthā sulabhā pareṇa ,
na cāgnicūḍāṃ jvalitāmupetya na dahyate vīravarārha kaścit.
18. na jānakī mānavavaṃśanātha tvayā sanāthā sulabhā pareṇa na
ca agnicūḍām jvalitām upetya na dahyate vīravarārha kaścit
18. mānavavaṃśanātha tvayā sanāthā jānakī pareṇa na sulabhā ca

18. O Lord of the human lineage (mānavavaṃśanātha), Janaki, having you as her protector, is not easily obtainable by another. And, O worthy hero (vīravarārha), just as no one who approaches a blazing fire (agnicūḍā) escapes being burned.
सलक्ष्मणं लक्ष्मणमप्रधृष्यं स्वभावजं वाक्यमुवाच रामः ।
हितं च पथ्यं च नयप्रसक्तं ससामधर्मार्थसमाहितं च ॥१९॥
19. salakṣmaṇaṃ lakṣmaṇamapradhṛṣyaṃ svabhāvajaṃ vākyamuvāca rāmaḥ ,
hitaṃ ca pathyaṃ ca nayaprasaktaṃ sasāmadharmārthasamāhitaṃ ca.
19. salakṣmaṇam lakṣmaṇam apradhṛṣyam
svabhāvajam vākyam uvāca rāmaḥ
hitam ca pathyam ca nayaprasaktam

sasāmadharmārthasamāhitam ca vākyam uvāca
19. Rama spoke to the auspiciously marked and unassailable Lakshmana words that were inherently fitting. These words were beneficial and wholesome, pertaining to strategy, and encompassing conciliation, natural law (dharma), and practical purpose (artha).
निःसंशयं कार्यमवेक्षितव्यं क्रियाविशेषो ह्यनुवर्तितव्यः ।
ननु प्रवृत्तस्य दुरासदस्य कुमारकार्यस्य फलं न चिन्त्यम् ॥२०॥
20. niḥsaṃśayaṃ kāryamavekṣitavyaṃ kriyāviśeṣo hyanuvartitavyaḥ ,
nanu pravṛttasya durāsadasya kumārakāryasya phalaṃ na cintyam.
20. niḥsaṃśayam kāryam avekṣitavyam
kriyāviśeṣaḥ hi anuvaritavyaḥ
nanu pravṛttasya durāsadasya
kumārakāryasya phalam na cintyam
20. kāryam niḥsaṃśayam avekṣitavyam

20. Undoubtedly, the task (kārya) must be examined, and indeed, the specific action (kriyāviśeṣa) must be pursued. For surely, the outcome of the prince's formidable task (kumārakārya), once begun, should not be thought about [with worry].
अथ पद्मपलाशाक्षीं मैथिलीमनुचिन्तयन् ।
उवाच लक्ष्मणं रामो मुखेन परिशुष्यता ॥२१॥
21. atha padmapalāśākṣīṃ maithilīmanucintayan ,
uvāca lakṣmaṇaṃ rāmo mukhena pariśuṣyatā.
21. atha padmapalāśākṣīm maithilīm anucintayan
uvāca lakṣmaṇam rāmaḥ mukhena pariśuṣyatā

21. Then, Rama, contemplating Maithili (Sītā), who had eyes like lotus petals, spoke to Lakshmana with a face withered by sorrow.
तर्पयित्वा सहस्राक्षः सलिलेन वसुंधराम् ।
निर्वर्तयित्वा सस्यानि कृतकर्मा व्यवस्थितः ॥२२॥
22. tarpayitvā sahasrākṣaḥ salilena vasuṃdharām ,
nirvartayitvā sasyāni kṛtakarmā vyavasthitaḥ.

nirvartayitvā sasyāni kṛtakarmā vyavasthitaḥ

22. Having refreshed the earth with water and caused the crops to grow, the thousand-eyed (Indra), having accomplished his task (karma), became settled.
स्निग्धगम्भीरनिर्घोषाः शैलद्रुमपुरोगमाः ।
विसृज्य सलिलं मेघाः परिश्रान्ता नृपात्मज ॥२३॥
23. snigdhagambhīranirghoṣāḥ śailadrumapurogamāḥ ,
visṛjya salilaṃ meghāḥ pariśrāntā nṛpātmaja.

visṛjya salilam meghāḥ pariśrāntāḥ nṛpātmaja

23. O son of a king, the clouds, whose rumblings were soft and deep, and which appeared to lead mountains and trees, having released their water, are now exhausted.
नीलोत्पलदलश्यामः श्यामीकृत्वा दिशो दश ।
विमदा इव मातङ्गाः शान्तवेगाः पयोधराः ॥२४॥
24. nīlotpaladalaśyāmaḥ śyāmīkṛtvā diśo daśa ,
vimadā iva mātaṅgāḥ śāntavegāḥ payodharāḥ.

24. The clouds (payodharāḥ), dark like the petal of a blue lotus, having darkened the ten directions, appear like elephants (mātaṅgāḥ) devoid of ichor, with their force calmed.
जलगर्भा महावेगाः कुटजार्जुनगन्धिनः ।
चरित्वा विरताः सौम्य वृष्टिवाताः समुद्यताः ॥२५॥
25. jalagarbhā mahāvegāḥ kuṭajārjunagandhinaḥ ,
caritvā viratāḥ saumya vṛṣṭivātāḥ samudyatāḥ.

25. O gentle one, the rain-bearing winds, which were filled with water, extremely swift, and fragrant with the kutaja and arjuna trees, having arisen vigorously and blown, have now subsided.
घनानां वारणानां च मयूराणां च लक्ष्मण ।
नादः प्रस्रवणानां च प्रशान्तः सहसानघ ॥२६॥
26. ghanānāṃ vāraṇānāṃ ca mayūrāṇāṃ ca lakṣmaṇa ,
nādaḥ prasravaṇānāṃ ca praśāntaḥ sahasānagha.
26. ghanānām vāraṇānām ca mayūrāṇām ca lakṣmaṇa
nādaḥ prasravaṇānām ca praśāntaḥ sahasā anagha
26. lakṣmaṇa anagha ghanānām vāraṇānām ca mayūrāṇām
ca prasravaṇānām ca nādaḥ sahasā praśāntaḥ
26. O Lakṣmaṇa, O faultless one, the cries of the clouds, elephants, and peacocks, and the roar of the waterfalls have suddenly subsided.
अभिवृष्टा महामेघैर्निर्मलाश्चित्रसानवः ।
अनुलिप्ता इवाभान्ति गिरयश्चन्द्ररश्मिभिः ॥२७॥
27. abhivṛṣṭā mahāmeghairnirmalāścitrasānavaḥ ,
anuliptā ivābhānti girayaścandraraśmibhiḥ.
27. abhivṛṣṭāḥ mahāmeghaiḥ nirmalāḥ citrasānavaḥ
anuliptāḥ iva ābhānti girayaḥ candraraśmibhiḥ

27. The mountains, having been drenched by great clouds, now appear pure with their colorful peaks, shining as if anointed by moonbeams.
दर्शयन्ति शरन्नद्यः पुलिनानि शनैः शनैः ।
नवसंगमसव्रीडा जघनानीव योषितः ॥२८॥
28. darśayanti śarannadyaḥ pulināni śanaiḥ śanaiḥ ,
navasaṃgamasavrīḍā jaghanānīva yoṣitaḥ.

28. The autumn rivers slowly reveal their sandbanks, just as women, shy from a new union, gradually reveal their hips.
प्रसन्नसलिलाः सौम्य कुररीभिर्विनादिताः ।
चक्रवाकगणाकीर्णा विभान्ति सलिलाशयाः ॥२९॥
29. prasannasalilāḥ saumya kurarībhirvināditāḥ ,
cakravākagaṇākīrṇā vibhānti salilāśayāḥ.

cakravākagaṇākīrṇāḥ vibhānti salilāśayāḥ
29. saumya salilāśayāḥ prasannasalilāḥ kurarībhiḥ
vināditāḥ cakravākagaṇākīrṇāḥ vibhānti
29. O gentle one, the water reservoirs, with their clear waters, resound with the calls of ospreys, and teem with flocks of ruddy geese; they appear beautiful.
अन्योन्यबद्धवैराणां जिगीषूणां नृपात्मज ।
उद्योगसमयः सौम्य पार्थिवानामुपस्थितः ॥३०॥
30. anyonyabaddhavairāṇāṃ jigīṣūṇāṃ nṛpātmaja ,
udyogasamayaḥ saumya pārthivānāmupasthitaḥ.

30. O son of a king, O gentle one, the season for exertion has arrived for those kings who harbor mutual enmity and seek victory.
इयं सा प्रथमा यात्रा पार्थिवानां नृपात्मज ।
न च पश्यामि सुग्रीवमुद्योगं वा तथाविधम् ॥३१॥
31. iyaṃ sā prathamā yātrā pārthivānāṃ nṛpātmaja ,
na ca paśyāmi sugrīvamudyogaṃ vā tathāvidham.

31. O son of a king, this indeed is the primary campaign of kings, yet I see neither Sugrīva nor such an endeavor.
चत्वारो वार्षिका मासा गता वर्षशतोपमाः ।
मम शोकाभितप्तस्य सौम्य सीतामपश्यतः ॥३२॥
32. catvāro vārṣikā māsā gatā varṣaśatopamāḥ ,
mama śokābhitaptasya saumya sītāmapaśyataḥ.

32. O gentle one, four months of the rainy season, which felt like a hundred years, have passed for me, who am tormented by grief and am unable to see Sītā.
प्रियाविहीने दुःखार्ते हृतराज्ये विवासिते ।
कृपां न कुरुते राजा सुग्रीवो मयि लक्ष्मण ॥३३॥
33. priyāvihīne duḥkhārte hṛtarājye vivāsite ,
kṛpāṃ na kurute rājā sugrīvo mayi lakṣmaṇa.

33. Lakṣmaṇa, King Sugrīva shows no compassion towards me, who am separated from my beloved, afflicted by sorrow, deprived of my kingdom, and living in exile.
अनाथो हृतराज्यो ऽयं रावणेन च धर्षितः ।
दीनो दूरगृहः कामी मां चैव शरणं गतः ॥३४॥
34. anātho hṛtarājyo'yaṃ rāvaṇena ca dharṣitaḥ ,
dīno dūragṛhaḥ kāmī māṃ caiva śaraṇaṃ gataḥ.

34. This helpless (anātha) Sugrīva, whose kingdom was seized and who was oppressed by Rāvaṇa, a miserable (dīna) person with a distant home, filled with longing (kāmī), came to me for refuge.
इत्येतैः कारणैः सौम्य सुग्रीवस्य दुरात्मनः ।
अहं वानरराजस्य परिभूतः परंतप ॥३५॥
35. ityetaiḥ kāraṇaiḥ saumya sugrīvasya durātmanaḥ ,
ahaṃ vānararājasya paribhūtaḥ paraṃtapa.
35. iti etaiḥ kāraṇaiḥ saumya sugrīvasya durātmanaḥ
aham vānararājasya paribhūtaḥ paraṃtapa

35. O gentle one (saumya), O tormentor of foes (paraṃtapa), by these very reasons, I have been disregarded by that wicked-minded Sugrīva, the king of the Vānaras.
स कालं परिसंख्याय सीतायाः परिमार्गणे ।
कृतार्थः समयं कृत्वा दुर्मतिर्नावबुध्यते ॥३६॥
36. sa kālaṃ parisaṃkhyāya sītāyāḥ parimārgaṇe ,
kṛtārthaḥ samayaṃ kṛtvā durmatirnāvabudhyate.

36. Having estimated the time (kāla) for the search for Sītā, he, the wicked-minded (durmati) Sugrīva, having achieved his objective and made a solemn pledge, now fails to comprehend his responsibilities.
त्वं प्रविश्य च किष्किन्धां ब्रूहि वानरपुंगवम् ।
मूर्खं ग्राम्य सुखे सक्तं सुग्रीवं वचनान्मम ॥३७॥
37. tvaṃ praviśya ca kiṣkindhāṃ brūhi vānarapuṃgavam ,
mūrkhaṃ grāmya sukhe saktaṃ sugrīvaṃ vacanānmama.
37. tvam pravisya ca kiṣkindhām brūhi vānarapuṅgavam
mūrkham grāmya sukhe saktam sugrīvam vacanāt mama

37. You, having entered Kiṣkindhā, speak to Sugrīva, that foolish chief of monkeys who is attached to sensual pleasures, conveying my message.
अर्थिनामुपपन्नानां पूर्वं चाप्युपकारिणाम् ।
आशां संश्रुत्य यो हन्ति स लोके पुरुषाधमः ॥३८॥
38. arthināmupapannānāṃ pūrvaṃ cāpyupakāriṇām ,
āśāṃ saṃśrutya yo hanti sa loke puruṣādhamaḥ.

āśām saṃśrutya yaḥ hanti saḥ loke puruṣādhamaḥ

38. In this world, the one who, after having heard the pleas of those seeking help who have come to him, and also of those who were formerly benefactors, then destroys their hope, he is the lowest of persons (puruṣa).
शुभं वा यदि वा पापं यो हि वाक्यमुदीरितम् ।
सत्येन परिगृह्णाति स वीरः पुरुषोत्तमः ॥३९॥
39. śubhaṃ vā yadi vā pāpaṃ yo hi vākyamudīritam ,
satyena parigṛhṇāti sa vīraḥ puruṣottamaḥ.
39. śubham vā yadi vā pāpam yaḥ hi vākyam udīritam
satyena parigṛhṇāti saḥ vīraḥ puruṣottamaḥ
39. yaḥ hi udīritam vākyam śubham vā yadi vā pāpam

39. Indeed, he who truthfully accepts a spoken word, whether it is good or bad, he is a hero, the supreme person (puruṣa).
कृतार्था ह्यकृतार्थानां मित्राणां न भवन्ति ये ।
तान्मृतानपि क्रव्यादः कृतघ्नान्नोपभुञ्जते ॥४०॥
40. kṛtārthā hyakṛtārthānāṃ mitrāṇāṃ na bhavanti ye ,
tānmṛtānapi kravyādaḥ kṛtaghnānnopabhuñjate.
40. kṛtārthāḥ hi akṛtārthānām mitrāṇām na bhavanti ye
tān mṛtān api kravyādaḥ kṛtaghnān na upabhuñjate
40. ye kṛtārthāḥ hi akṛtārthānām mitrāṇām na bhavanti

40. Indeed, those who have achieved their goals but do not help their friends who have not yet achieved theirs, even flesh-eating creatures do not consume the corpses of such ungrateful individuals.
नूनं काञ्चनपृष्ठस्य विकृष्टस्य मया रणे ।
द्रष्टुमिच्छन्ति चापस्य रूपं विद्युद्गणोपमम् ॥४१॥
41. nūnaṃ kāñcanapṛṣṭhasya vikṛṣṭasya mayā raṇe ,
draṣṭumicchanti cāpasya rūpaṃ vidyudgaṇopamam.

41. Surely, they desire to see the form of the gold-backed bow, drawn by me in battle, which resembles a cluster of lightning flashes.
घोरं ज्यातलनिर्घोषं क्रुद्धस्य मम संयुगे ।
निर्घोषमिव वज्रस्य पुनः संश्रोतुमिच्छति ॥४२॥
42. ghoraṃ jyātalanirghoṣaṃ kruddhasya mama saṃyuge ,
nirghoṣamiva vajrasya punaḥ saṃśrotumicchati.

nirghoṣam iva vajrasya punaḥ saṃśrotum icchati

42. He also wishes to hear again the terrible sound of my enraged self's bowstring and hand-guard in battle, a sound like the roar of a thunderbolt.
काममेवंगते ऽप्यस्य परिज्ञाते पराक्रमे ।
त्वत्सहायस्य मे वीर न चिन्ता स्यान्नृपात्मज ॥४३॥
43. kāmamevaṃgate'pyasya parijñāte parākrame ,
tvatsahāyasya me vīra na cintā syānnṛpātmaja.

tvatsahāyasya me vīra na cintā syāt nṛpātmaja
43. vīra nṛpātmaja,

43. O hero, O prince, even though his valor and might have become fully known, there would certainly be no concern for me who has you as my helper.
यदर्थमयमारम्भः कृतः परपुरंजय ।
समयं नाभिजानाति कृतार्थः प्लवगेश्वरः ॥४४॥
44. yadarthamayamārambhaḥ kṛtaḥ parapuraṃjaya ,
samayaṃ nābhijānāti kṛtārthaḥ plavageśvaraḥ.

44. O conqueror of enemy cities, the lord of monkeys (Sugrīva), having achieved his objective, does not remember the agreement for which this endeavor was undertaken.
वर्षासमयकालं तु प्रतिज्ञाय हरीश्वरः ।
व्यतीतांश्चतुरो मासान् विहरन्नावबुध्यते ॥४५॥
45. varṣāsamayakālaṃ tu pratijñāya harīśvaraḥ ,
vyatītāṃścaturo māsān viharannāvabudhyate.

45. Although the lord of the monkeys (Sugrīva) had vowed to act after the rainy season, he is now enjoying himself, and does not even realize that four months have passed.
सामात्यपरिषत् क्रीडन्पानमेवोपसेवते ।
शोकदीनेषु नास्मासु सुग्रीवः कुरुते दयाम् ॥४६॥
46. sāmātyapariṣat krīḍanpānamevopasevate ,
śokadīneṣu nāsmāsu sugrīvaḥ kurute dayām.

46. He (Sugrīva) is amusing himself only with wine, accompanied by his council of ministers. Sugrīva shows no compassion for us, who are distressed by sorrow.
उच्यतां गच्छ सुग्रीवस्त्वया वत्स महाबल ।
मम रोषस्य यद्रूपं ब्रूयाश्चैनमिदं वचः ॥४७॥
47. ucyatāṃ gaccha sugrīvastvayā vatsa mahābala ,
mama roṣasya yadrūpaṃ brūyāścainamidaṃ vacaḥ.

mama roṣasya yat rūpam brūyāḥ ca enam idam vacaḥ

47. My dear Lakshmana, O mighty one, go and ensure Sugrīva is told. And you should convey to him these words, which reveal the nature of my wrath.
न च संकुचितः पन्था येन वाली हतो गतः ।
समये तिष्ठ सुग्रीवमा वालिपथमन्वगाः ॥४८॥
48. na ca saṃkucitaḥ panthā yena vālī hato gataḥ ,
samaye tiṣṭha sugrīvamā vālipathamanvagāḥ.
48. na ca saṃkucitaḥ panthāḥ yena vālī hataḥ gataḥ
samaye tiṣṭha sugrīva mā vālipatham anvagāḥ
48. ca yena vālī hataḥ gataḥ panthāḥ na saṃkucitaḥ.

48. And the path by which Vāli was killed and departed is not at all constricted. Sugrīva, abide by your promise! Do not follow Vāli's path!
एक एव रणे वाली शरेण निहतो मया ।
त्वां तु सत्यादतिक्रान्तं हनिष्यामि सबान्धवम् ॥४९॥
49. eka eva raṇe vālī śareṇa nihato mayā ,
tvāṃ tu satyādatikrāntaṃ haniṣyāmi sabāndhavam.

tu satyāt atikrāntam haniṣyāmi sa-bāndhavam

49. Vali alone was killed by me in battle with an arrow. But you, having transgressed the truth (dharma), I shall kill along with your relatives.
तदेवं विहिते कार्ये यद्धितं पुरुषर्षभ ।
तत्तद्ब्रूहि नरश्रेष्ठ त्वर कालव्यतिक्रमः ॥५०॥
50. tadevaṃ vihite kārye yaddhitaṃ puruṣarṣabha ,
tattadbrūhi naraśreṣṭha tvara kālavyatikramaḥ.
50. tat evam vihite kārye yat hitam puruṣarṣabha |
tat tat brūhi naraśreṣṭha tvara kāla-vyatikramaḥ
50. puruṣarṣabha,
evam kārye vihite yat hitam,
tat tat brūhi naraśreṣṭha,
tvara,
kāla-vyatikramaḥ
50. Therefore, with this task thus performed, O chief among men (puruṣarṣabha), tell me what is beneficial. O best among men (naraśreṣṭha), make haste, for time is passing swiftly.
कुरुष्व सत्यं मयि वानरेश्वर प्रतिश्रुतं धर्ममवेक्ष्य शाश्वतम् ।
मा वालिनं प्रेत्य गतो यमक्षयं त्वमद्य पश्येर्मम चोदितैः शरैः ॥५१॥
51. kuruṣva satyaṃ mayi vānareśvara pratiśrutaṃ dharmamavekṣya śāśvatam ,
mā vālinaṃ pretya gato yamakṣayaṃ tvamadya paśyermama coditaiḥ śaraiḥ.

51. vāṇareśvara,

adya mama coditaiḥ śaraiḥ vālinam paśyer
51. O lord of monkeys (vāṇareśvara), fulfill your promise (satya) to me, considering the eternal natural law (dharma). Lest, having died, you go to the abode of Yama and see Vali there today, [who was] struck by my arrows.
स पूर्वजं तीव्रविवृद्धकोपं लालप्यमानं प्रसमीक्ष्य दीनम् ।
चकार तीव्रां मतिमुग्रतेजा हरीश्वरमानववंशनाथः ॥५२॥
52. sa pūrvajaṃ tīvravivṛddhakopaṃ lālapyamānaṃ prasamīkṣya dīnam ,
cakāra tīvrāṃ matimugratejā harīśvaramānavavaṃśanāthaḥ.

52. That one, the fiercely radiant (ugratejāḥ) lord of the monkey-human lineage (harīśvaramānavavaṃśanāthaḥ), having carefully observed (prasamīkṣya) his elder brother (pūrvajam), who was lamenting (lālapyamānam) piteously (dīnam) with intensely growing anger (tīvravivṛddhakopam), made a strong resolve (tīvrāṃ matim cakāra).
