ततस्तु तमसा तीरं रम्यमाश्रित्य राघवः ।
सीतामुद्वीक्ष्य सौमित्रिमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१॥

1. Thereupon, Rāghava (Rāma), having resorted to the beautiful bank of the Tamasā [river], and having looked at Sītā and Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), spoke this statement.
इयमद्य निशा पूर्वा सौमित्रे प्रस्थिता वनम् ।
वनवासस्य भद्रं ते स नोत्कण्ठितुमर्हसि ॥२॥
2. iyamadya niśā pūrvā saumitre prasthitā vanam ,
vanavāsasya bhadraṃ te sa notkaṇṭhitumarhasi.
2. iyam adya niśā pūrvā saumitre prasthitā vanam
vanavāsasya bhadram te saḥ na utkaṇṭhitum arhasi

2. O Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), this is our first night, today, having departed for the forest. May good fortune (bhadram) be with you in your forest-dwelling (vanavāsasya). Therefore, you should not be anxious.
पश्य शून्यान्यरण्यानि रुदन्तीव समन्ततः ।
यथानिलयमायद्भिर्निलीनानि मृगद्विजैः ॥३॥
3. paśya śūnyānyaraṇyāni rudantīva samantataḥ ,
yathānilayamāyadbhirnilīnāni mṛgadvijaiḥ.
3. paśya śūnyāni araṇyāni rudanti iva samantataḥ
yathā nilayam āyadbhīḥ nilīnāni mṛgadvijaiḥ

3. Behold the desolate forests all around, as if they are weeping! They are [now] filled with deer and birds that are hidden away, having arrived at their respective abodes.
अद्यायोध्या तु नगरी राजधानी पितुर्मम ।
सस्त्रीपुंसा गतानस्माञ् शोचिष्यति न संशयः ॥४॥
4. adyāyodhyā tu nagarī rājadhānī piturmama ,
sastrīpuṃsā gatānasmāñ śociṣyati na saṃśayaḥ.
4. adya ayodhyā tu nagarī rājadhānī pituḥ mama
sa-strī-puṃsā gatān asmān śociṣyati na saṃśayaḥ
4. adya mama pituḥ rājadhānī ayodhyā nagarī tu

4. Today, the city of Ayodhya, my father's capital, with all its men and women, will undoubtedly grieve for us who have left.
भरतः खलु धर्मात्मा पितरं मातरं च मे ।
धर्मार्थकामसहितैर्वाक्यैराश्वासयिष्यति ॥५॥
5. bharataḥ khalu dharmātmā pitaraṃ mātaraṃ ca me ,
dharmārthakāmasahitairvākyairāśvāsayiṣyati.
5. bharataḥ khalu dharmātmā pitaram mātaram ca me
dharma-artha-kāma-sahitaiḥ vākyaiḥ āśvāsayiṣyati
5. khalu dharmātmā bharataḥ me pitaram mātaram ca

5. Indeed, the virtuous (dharma) Bharata will console my father and mother with words pertaining to righteousness (dharma), prosperity, and pleasure.
भरतस्यानृशंसत्वं संचिन्त्याहं पुनः पुनः ।
नानुशोचामि पितरं मातरं चापि लक्ष्मण ॥६॥
6. bharatasyānṛśaṃsatvaṃ saṃcintyāhaṃ punaḥ punaḥ ,
nānuśocāmi pitaraṃ mātaraṃ cāpi lakṣmaṇa.
6. bharatasya anṛśaṃsatvam saṃcintya aham punaḥ
punaḥ na anuśocāmi pitaram mātaram ca api lakṣmaṇa
6. lakṣmaṇa aham bharatasya anṛśaṃsatvam punaḥ punaḥ
saṃcintya pitaram mātaram ca api na anuśocāmi
6. O Lakshmana, having repeatedly reflected on Bharata's compassion, I no longer grieve for my father and mother.
त्वया कार्यं नरव्याघ्र मामनुव्रजता कृतम् ।
अन्वेष्टव्या हि वैदेह्या रक्षणार्थे सहायता ॥७॥
7. tvayā kāryaṃ naravyāghra māmanuvrajatā kṛtam ,
anveṣṭavyā hi vaidehyā rakṣaṇārthe sahāyatā.
7. tvayā kāryam naravyāghra mām anuvrajatā kṛtam
anveṣṭavyā hi vaidehyāḥ rakṣaṇa-arthe sahāyatā
7. naravyāghra tvayā mām anuvrajatā kāryam kṛtam

7. O tiger among men, you have accomplished a great deed by accompanying me. Indeed, assistance must now be sought for the protection of Vaidehī (Sita).
अद्भिरेव तु सौमित्रे वत्स्याम्यद्य निशामिमाम् ।
एतद्धि रोचते मह्यं वन्ये ऽपि विविधे सति ॥८॥
8. adbhireva tu saumitre vatsyāmyadya niśāmimām ,
etaddhi rocate mahyaṃ vanye'pi vividhe sati.
8. adbhiḥ eva tu saumitre vatsyāmi adya niśām imām
| etat hi rocate mahyam vanye api vividhe sati
8. saumitre tu adya imām niśām adbhiḥ eva vatsyāmi
hi etat vanye vividhe api sati mahyam rocate
8. But indeed, O Saumitra, I shall spend this night today subsisting only on water. For this is agreeable to me, even with various forest provisions available.
एवमुक्त्वा तु सौमित्रं सुमन्त्रमपि राघवः ।
अप्रमत्तस्त्वमश्वेषु भव सौम्येत्युवाच ह ॥९॥
9. evamuktvā tu saumitraṃ sumantramapi rāghavaḥ ,
apramattastvamaśveṣu bhava saumyetyuvāca ha.
9. evam uktvā tu saumitram sumantram api rāghavaḥ |
apramattaḥ tvam aśveṣu bhava saumya iti uvāca ha
9. rāghavaḥ tu evam uktvā saumitram api sumantram uvāca
ha (yat) saumya tvam aśveṣu apramattaḥ bhava iti
9. Having spoken thus to Saumitra and also to Sumantra, Rāma (Rāghava) then said, 'O gentle one, be attentive to the horses.'
सो ऽश्वान् सुमन्त्रः संयम्य सूर्ये ऽस्तं समुपागते ।
प्रभूतयवसान् कृत्वा बभूव प्रत्यनन्तरः ॥१०॥
10. so'śvān sumantraḥ saṃyamya sūrye'staṃ samupāgate ,
prabhūtayavasān kṛtvā babhūva pratyanantaraḥ.
10. saḥ aśvān sumantraḥ saṃyamya sūrye astam samupāgate
| prabhūtayavasān kṛtvā babhūva pratyanantaraḥ
10. sūrye astam samupāgate,
sumantraḥ saḥ aśvān saṃyamya,
prabhūtayavasān kṛtvā,
pratyanantaraḥ babhūva
10. Sumantra, having reined in the horses, and after the sun had set, provided them with abundant fodder, then stood nearby (Rāma).
उपास्यतु शिवां संध्यां दृष्ट्वा रात्रिमुपस्थिताम् ।
रामस्य शयनं चक्रे सूतः सौमित्रिणा सह ॥११॥
11. upāsyatu śivāṃ saṃdhyāṃ dṛṣṭvā rātrimupasthitām ,
rāmasya śayanaṃ cakre sūtaḥ saumitriṇā saha.
11. upāsya tu śivām sandhyām dṛṣṭvā rātrim upasthitām
| rāmasya śayanam cakre sūtaḥ saumitriṇā saha
11. tu sūtaḥ saumitriṇā saha śivām sandhyām upāsya,
upasthitām rātrim dṛṣṭvā,
rāmasya śayanam cakre
11. Then, after performing the auspicious evening (sandhyā) rites and seeing that night had arrived, the charioteer (Sūta), along with Saumitra, prepared Rāma's sleeping place.
तां शय्यां तमसातीरे वीक्ष्य वृक्षदलैः कृताम् ।
रामः सौमित्रिणां सार्धं सभार्यः संविवेश ह ॥१२॥
12. tāṃ śayyāṃ tamasātīre vīkṣya vṛkṣadalaiḥ kṛtām ,
rāmaḥ saumitriṇāṃ sārdhaṃ sabhāryaḥ saṃviveśa ha.
12. tām śayyām tamasātīre vīkṣya vṛkṣadalaiḥ kṛtām
rāmaḥ saumitriṇā sārdham sabhāryaḥ saṃviveśa ha
12. rāmaḥ sabhāryaḥ saumitriṇā sārdham tamasātīre

12. Having seen that bed, made of tree leaves, on the bank of the Tamasā River, Rāma, accompanied by his wife and Lakṣmaṇa, lay down.
सभार्यं संप्रसुप्तं तं भ्रातरं वीक्ष्य लक्ष्मणः ।
कथयामास सूताय रामस्य विविधान् गुणान् ॥१३॥
13. sabhāryaṃ saṃprasuptaṃ taṃ bhrātaraṃ vīkṣya lakṣmaṇaḥ ,
kathayāmāsa sūtāya rāmasya vividhān guṇān.
13. sabhāryam saṃprasuptam tam bhrātaram vīkṣya
lakṣmaṇaḥ kathayāmāsa sūtāya rāmasya vividhān guṇān
13. lakṣmaṇaḥ sabhāryam saṃprasuptam tam bhrātaram
vīkṣya rāmasya vividhān guṇān sūtāya kathayāmāsa
13. Having seen that brother, deeply asleep with his wife, Lakṣmaṇa narrated Rāma's various qualities to the charioteer.
जाग्रतो ह्येव तां रात्रिं सौमित्रेरुदितो रविः ।
सूतस्य तमसातीरे रामस्य ब्रुवतो गुणान् ॥१४॥
14. jāgrato hyeva tāṃ rātriṃ saumitrerudito raviḥ ,
sūtasya tamasātīre rāmasya bruvato guṇān.
14. jāgrataḥ hi eva tām rātrim saumitreḥ uditaḥ
raviḥ sūtasya tamasātīre rāmasya bruvataḥ guṇān
14. hi eva raviḥ uditaḥ tām rātrim tamasātīre
jāgrataḥ saumitreḥ sūtasya rāmasya guṇān bruvataḥ
14. Indeed, the sun rose while Lakṣmaṇa and the charioteer remained awake throughout that night on the bank of the Tamasā, as [the charioteer] narrated the qualities of Rāma.
गोकुलाकुलतीरायास्तमसाया विदूरतः ।
अवसत्तत्र तां रात्रिं रामः प्रकृतिभिः सह ॥१५॥
15. gokulākulatīrāyāstamasāyā vidūrataḥ ,
avasattatra tāṃ rātriṃ rāmaḥ prakṛtibhiḥ saha.
15. gokulākulatīrāyāḥ tamasāyāḥ vidūrataḥ avasat
tatra tām rātrim rāmaḥ prakṛtibhiḥ saha
15. rāmaḥ prakṛtibhiḥ saha tatra tām rātrim
gokulākulatīrāyāḥ tamasāyāḥ vidūrataḥ avasat
15. Rāma, along with his subjects (prakṛti), stayed there that night, not far from the Tamasā River, whose banks were crowded with herds of cattle.
उत्थाय तु महातेजाः प्रकृतीस्ता निशाम्य च ।
अब्रवीद्भ्रातरं रामो लक्ष्मणं पुण्यलक्षणम् ॥१६॥
16. utthāya tu mahātejāḥ prakṛtīstā niśāmya ca ,
abravīdbhrātaraṃ rāmo lakṣmaṇaṃ puṇyalakṣaṇam.
16. utthāya tu mahātejāḥ prakṛtīḥ tāḥ niśāmya ca
abravīt bhrātaram rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇam puṇyalakṣaṇam
16. mahātejāḥ rāmaḥ tu utthāya tāḥ prakṛtīḥ niśāmya
ca puṇyalakṣaṇam bhrātaram lakṣmaṇam abravīt
16. Having risen and observed those subjects (prakṛti), the greatly radiant Rāma then spoke to his brother Lakṣmaṇa, who possessed auspicious marks.
अस्मद्व्यपेक्षान् सौमित्रे निरपेक्षान् गृहेष्वपि ।
वृक्षमूलेषु संसुप्तान्पश्य लक्ष्मण साम्प्रतम् ॥१७॥
17. asmadvyapekṣān saumitre nirapekṣān gṛheṣvapi ,
vṛkṣamūleṣu saṃsuptānpaśya lakṣmaṇa sāmpratam.
17. asmadvyapekṣān saumitre nirapekṣān gṛheṣu api
vṛkṣamūleṣu saṃsuptān paśya lakṣmaṇa sāmpratam
17. saumitre lakṣmaṇa sāmpratam asmadvyapekṣān gṛheṣu

17. Lakṣmaṇa, O son of Sumitrā, see now those who are dependent on us, utterly indifferent even to their own homes, sleeping soundly at the foot of trees.
यथैते नियमं पौराः कुर्वन्त्यस्मन्निवर्तने ।
अपि प्राणानसिष्यन्ति न तु त्यक्ष्यन्ति निश्चयम् ॥१८॥
18. yathaite niyamaṃ paurāḥ kurvantyasmannivartane ,
api prāṇānasiṣyanti na tu tyakṣyanti niścayam.
18. yathā ete niyamam paurāḥ kurvanti asmad nivartane
api prāṇān asiṣyanti na tu tyakṣyanti niścayam
18. yathā ete paurāḥ asmad nivartane niyamam kurvanti,
api prāṇān asiṣyanti,
tu niścayam na tyakṣyanti
18. Just as these citizens (paurāḥ) are determined concerning our return, they will even give up their lives, but they will certainly not abandon their resolve.
यावदेव तु संसुप्तास्तावदेव वयं लघु ।
रथमारुह्य गच्छामः पन्थानमकुतोभयम् ॥१९॥
19. yāvadeva tu saṃsuptāstāvadeva vayaṃ laghu ,
rathamāruhya gacchāmaḥ panthānamakutobhayam.
19. yāvat eva tu saṃsuptāḥ tāvat eva vayam laghu
ratham āruhya gacchāmaḥ panthānam akutaḥbhayam
19. tu yāvat eva saṃsuptāḥ tāvat eva vayam laghu
ratham āruhya akutaḥbhayam panthānam gacchāmaḥ
19. As long as they are fast asleep, at that very moment, let us swiftly mount the chariot and proceed on a path free from all danger.
अतो भूयो ऽपि नेदानीमिक्ष्वाकुपुरवासिनः ।
स्वपेयुरनुरक्ता मां वृक्षमूलानि संश्रिताः ॥२०॥
20. ato bhūyo'pi nedānīmikṣvākupuravāsinaḥ ,
svapeyuranuraktā māṃ vṛkṣamūlāni saṃśritāḥ.
20. ataḥ bhūyaḥ api na idānīm ikṣvākupuravāsinaḥ
svapeyuḥ anuraktāḥ mām vṛkṣamūlāni saṃśritāḥ
20. ataḥ mām anuraktāḥ ikṣvākupuravāsinaḥ idānīm
vṛkṣamūlāni saṃśritāḥ bhūyaḥ api na svapeyuḥ
20. Therefore, it is not right that the residents of Ayodhya, who are devoted to me, should now sleep having taken shelter under trees again.
पौरा ह्यात्मकृताद्दुःखाद्विप्रमोच्या नृपात्मजैः ।
न तु खल्वात्मना योज्या दुःखेन पुरवासिनः ॥२१॥
21. paurā hyātmakṛtādduḥkhādvipramocyā nṛpātmajaiḥ ,
na tu khalvātmanā yojyā duḥkhena puravāsinaḥ.
21. paurāḥ hi ātmakṛtāt duḥkhāt vipramocyāḥ nṛpātmajaiḥ
na tu khalu ātmanā yojyāḥ duḥkhena puravāsinaḥ
21. hi nṛpātmajaiḥ paurāḥ ātmakṛtāt duḥkhāt vipramocyāḥ
tu khalu puravāsinaḥ ātmanā duḥkhena na yojyāḥ
21. For the citizens should be liberated by the king's sons from suffering (duḥkha) caused by their own actions. But certainly, the city residents should not be subjected to sorrow (duḥkha) by the king's son himself.
अब्रवील् लक्ष्मणो रामं साक्षाद्धर्ममिव स्थितम् ।
रोचते मे महाप्राज्ञ क्षिप्रमारुह्यतामिति ॥२२॥
22. abravīl lakṣmaṇo rāmaṃ sākṣāddharmamiva sthitam ,
rocate me mahāprājña kṣipramāruhyatāmiti.
22. abravīt lakṣmaṇaḥ rāmam sākṣāt dharmam iva
sthitam rocate me mahāprājña kṣipram āruhyatām iti
22. lakṣmaṇaḥ sākṣāt dharmam iva sthitam rāmam abravīt
iti he mahāprājña me rocate kṣipram āruhyatām
22. Lakshmana said to Rama, who stood there as if righteousness (dharma) personified: 'O greatly wise one, this pleases me; let us ascend quickly!'
सूतस्ततः संत्वरितः स्यन्दनं तैर्हयोत्तमैः ।
योजयित्वाथ रामाय प्राञ्जलिः प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥२३॥
23. sūtastataḥ saṃtvaritaḥ syandanaṃ tairhayottamaiḥ ,
yojayitvātha rāmāya prāñjaliḥ pratyavedayat.
23. sūtaḥ tataḥ saṃtvaritaḥ syandanam taiḥ hayottamaiḥ
yojayitvā atha rāmāya prāñjaliḥ pratyavedayat
23. tataḥ sūtaḥ saṃtvaritaḥ taiḥ hayottamaiḥ syandanam
yojayitvā atha prāñjaliḥ rāmāya pratyavedayat
23. Then, the charioteer, having quickly yoked the chariot with those excellent horses, thereupon, with folded hands, announced to Rama.
मोहनार्थं तु पौराणां सूतं रामो ऽब्रवीद्वचः ।
उदङ्मुखः प्रयाहि त्वं रथमास्थाय सारथे ॥२४॥
24. mohanārthaṃ tu paurāṇāṃ sūtaṃ rāmo'bravīdvacaḥ ,
udaṅmukhaḥ prayāhi tvaṃ rathamāsthāya sārathe.
24. mohanārtham tu paurāṇām sūtam rāmaḥ abravīt vacaḥ
| udaṅmukhaḥ prayāhi tvam ratham āsthāya sārathe
24. rāmaḥ paurāṇām mohanārtham sūtam vacaḥ abravīt
sārathe tvam ratham āsthāya udaṅmukhaḥ prayāhi
24. To deceive the citizens, Rama spoke these words to the charioteer: 'O charioteer, mount the chariot and go forth, facing north.'
मुहूर्तं त्वरितं गत्वा निर्गतय रथं पुनः ।
यथा न विद्युः पौरा मां तथा कुरु समाहितः ॥२५॥
25. muhūrtaṃ tvaritaṃ gatvā nirgataya rathaṃ punaḥ ,
yathā na vidyuḥ paurā māṃ tathā kuru samāhitaḥ.
25. muhūrtam tvaritam gatvā nirgataya ratham punaḥ |
yathā na vidyuḥ paurāḥ mām tathā kuru samāhitaḥ
25. tvaritam muhūrtam gatvā,
ratham punaḥ nirgataya paurāḥ mām yathā na vidyuḥ tathā samāhitaḥ kuru
25. After going a short distance quickly, turn the chariot back. Act attentively so that the citizens may not perceive me.
रामस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा तथा चक्रे स सारथिः ।
प्रत्यागम्य च रामस्य स्यन्दनं प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥२६॥
26. rāmasya vacanaṃ śrutvā tathā cakre sa sārathiḥ ,
pratyāgamya ca rāmasya syandanaṃ pratyavedayat.
26. rāmasya vacanam śrutvā tathā cakre sa sārathiḥ
| pratyāgamya ca rāmasya syandanam pratyavedayat
26. sa sārathiḥ rāmasya vacanam śrutvā tathā cakre

26. Having heard Rama's command, that charioteer acted accordingly. And after returning, he informed Rama that the chariot was ready.
तं स्यन्दनमधिष्ठाय राघवः सपरिच्छदः ।
शीघ्रगामाकुलावर्तां तमसामतरन्नदीम् ॥२७॥
27. taṃ syandanamadhiṣṭhāya rāghavaḥ saparicchadaḥ ,
śīghragāmākulāvartāṃ tamasāmatarannadīm.
27. tam syandanam adhiṣṭhāya rāghavaḥ saparicchadaḥ
| śīghragām ākulāvartām tamasām atarat nadīm
27. saparicchadaḥ rāghavaḥ tam syandanam adhiṣṭhāya,
śīghragām ākulāvartām tamasām nadīm atarat
27. Rama, with his retinue, mounted that chariot and crossed the swift-flowing Tamasā river, which had turbulent whirlpools.
स संतीर्य महाबाहुः श्रीमाञ् शिवमकण्टकम् ।
प्रापद्यत महामार्गमभयं भयदर्शिनाम् ॥२८॥
28. sa saṃtīrya mahābāhuḥ śrīmāñ śivamakaṇṭakam ,
prāpadyata mahāmārgamabhayaṃ bhayadarśinām.
28. saḥ saṃtīrya mahābāhuḥ śrīmān śivam akaṇṭakam
prāpadyata mahāmārgam abhayam bhayadarśinām
28. saḥ mahābāhuḥ śrīmān śivam akaṇṭakam saṃtīrya
bhayadarśinām abhayam mahāmārgam prāpadyata
28. He, the mighty-armed and glorious one, having successfully traversed [the difficulty], reached a great path that was auspicious and free from obstacles, offering security to those who perceive danger.
प्रभातायां तु शर्वर्यां पौरास्ते राघवो विना ।
शोकोपहतनिश्चेष्टा बभूवुर्हतचेतसः ॥२९॥
29. prabhātāyāṃ tu śarvaryāṃ paurāste rāghavo vinā ,
śokopahataniśceṣṭā babhūvurhatacetasaḥ.
29. prabhātāyām tu śarvaryām paurāḥ te rāghavaḥ
vinā śokopahatanisceṣṭāḥ babhūvuḥ hatacetasaḥ
29. tu śarvaryām prabhātāyām rāghavaḥ vinā te
paurāḥ śokopahatanisceṣṭāḥ hatacetasaḥ babhūvuḥ
29. But as the night dawned, those citizens, bereft of Rama, became motionless due to overwhelming sorrow and utterly disheartened.
शोकजाश्रुपरिद्यूना वीक्षमाणास्ततस्ततः ।
आलोकमपि रामस्य न पश्यन्ति स्म दुःखिताः ॥३०॥
30. śokajāśruparidyūnā vīkṣamāṇāstatastataḥ ,
ālokamapi rāmasya na paśyanti sma duḥkhitāḥ.
30. śokajāśruparidyūnāḥ vīkṣamāṇāḥ tatastataḥ
ālokam api rāmasya na paśyanti sma duḥkhitāḥ
30. duḥkhitāḥ śokajāśruparidyūnāḥ tatas tataḥ
vīkṣamāṇāḥ rāmasya ālokam api na paśyanti sma
30. Distressed and greatly weakened by tears born of grief, they looked anxiously in every direction but could not even catch sight of Rama.
ततो मार्गानुसारेण गत्वा किं चित् क्षणं पुनः ।
मार्गनाशाद्विषादेन महता समभिप्लुतः ॥३१॥
31. tato mārgānusāreṇa gatvā kiṃ cit kṣaṇaṃ punaḥ ,
mārganāśādviṣādena mahatā samabhiplutaḥ.
31. tataḥ mārgānusāreṇa gatvā kiṃ cit kṣaṇam
punaḥ mārganāśāt viṣādena mahatā samabhiplutaḥ
31. tataḥ punaḥ mārgānusāreṇa kiṃ cit kṣaṇam

31. Then, having gone a little while by following the path, [he] was again overcome by great despair due to the path being lost.
रथस्य मार्गनाशेन न्यवर्तन्त मनस्विनः ।
किमिदं किं करिष्यामो दैवेनोपहता इति ॥३२॥
32. rathasya mārganāśena nyavartanta manasvinaḥ ,
kimidaṃ kiṃ kariṣyāmo daivenopahatā iti.

kim idam kim kariṣyāmaḥ daivena upahatāḥ iti

32. The resolute people turned back because the chariot's tracks had disappeared, thinking, "What is this? What shall we do? We are afflicted by destiny."
ततो यथागतेनैव मार्गेण क्लान्तचेतसः ।
अयोध्यामगमन् सर्वे पुरीं व्यथितसज्जनाम् ॥३३॥
33. tato yathāgatenaiva mārgeṇa klāntacetasaḥ ,
ayodhyāmagaman sarve purīṃ vyathitasajjanām.
33. tataḥ yathāgatena eva mārgeṇa klāntacetasaḥ
ayodhyām agaman sarve purīm vyathitasajjanām
33. tataḥ sarve klāntacetasaḥ agaman ayodhyām
purīm vyathitasajjanām yathāgatena eva mārgeṇa
33. Then, all of them, with dispirited minds, returned to the city of Ayodhya, whose virtuous inhabitants were distressed, by the very same path they had traveled.
