तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य स्नेहपर्याकुलाक्षरम् ।
समन्युः कौशिको वाक्यं प्रत्युवच महीपतिम् ॥१॥
1. tacchrutvā vacanaṃ tasya snehaparyākulākṣaram ,
samanyuḥ kauśiko vākyaṃ pratyuvaca mahīpatim.

1. Having heard that speech (vacanam) of his, whose words were agitated by (parental) affection (sneha), Kaushika (Vishwamitra), filled with anger, replied to the king (mahipati).
पूर्वमर्थं प्रतिश्रुत्य प्रतिज्ञां हातुमिच्छसि ।
रागवाणामयुक्तो ऽयं कुलस्यास्य विपर्ययः ॥२॥
2. pūrvamarthaṃ pratiśrutya pratijñāṃ hātumicchasi ,
rāgavāṇāmayukto'yaṃ kulasyāsya viparyayaḥ.
2. pūrvam artham pratiśrutya pratijñām hātum icchasi
rāgavāṇām ayuktaḥ ayam kulasya asya viparyayaḥ
2. pūrvam artham pratiśrutya pratijñām hātum icchasi

2. Having previously promised (pratiśrutya) my request, you now wish to abandon your promise (pratijñā). This reversal (viparyaya) is improper for this (Raghu) family (kula).
यदिदं ते क्षमं राजन् गमिष्यामि यथागतम् ।
मिथ्याप्रतिज्ञः काकुत्स्थ सुखी भव सबान्धवः ॥३॥
3. yadidaṃ te kṣamaṃ rājan gamiṣyāmi yathāgatam ,
mithyāpratijñaḥ kākutstha sukhī bhava sabāndhavaḥ.
3. yat idam te kṣamam rājan gamiṣyāmi yathāgatam
mithyāpratijñaḥ kākutstha sukhī bhava sabāndhavaḥ
3. rājan kākutstha te idam kṣamam yat [aham] yathāgatam gamiṣyāmi,
mithyāpratijñaḥ sabāndhavaḥ sukhī bhava
3. O King, if this is acceptable to you, I shall depart the way I came. O Kakutstha, you whose promise is false, be happy with your relatives.
तस्य रोषपरीतस्य विश्वामित्रस्य धीमतः ।
चचाल वसुधा कृत्स्ना विवेश च भयं सुरान् ॥४॥
4. tasya roṣaparītasya viśvāmitrasya dhīmataḥ ,
cacāla vasudhā kṛtsnā viveśa ca bhayaṃ surān.

cacāla vasudhā kṛtsnā viveśa ca bhayam surān

4. When that wise Viśvāmitra was overcome with wrath, the entire earth trembled, and fear seized the gods.
त्रस्तरूपं तु विज्ञाय जगत् सर्वं महानृषिः ।
नृपतिं सुव्रतो धीरो वसिष्ठो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥५॥
5. trastarūpaṃ tu vijñāya jagat sarvaṃ mahānṛṣiḥ ,
nṛpatiṃ suvrato dhīro vasiṣṭho vākyamabravīt.
5. trastarūpam tu vijñāya jagat sarvam mahānṛṣiḥ
nṛpatim suvrataḥ dhīraḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ vākyam abravīt
5. tu mahānṛṣiḥ suvrataḥ dhīraḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ trastarūpam
sarvam jagat vijñāya nṛpatim vākyam abravīt
5. However, the great sage Vasiṣṭha, who was resolute and of excellent vows, realizing that the entire world was in a state of terror, spoke these words to the king.
इक्ष्वाकूणां कुले जातः साक्षाद्धर्म इवापरः ।
धृतिमान्सुव्रतः श्रीमान्न धर्मं हातुमर्हसि ॥६॥
6. ikṣvākūṇāṃ kule jātaḥ sākṣāddharma ivāparaḥ ,
dhṛtimānsuvrataḥ śrīmānna dharmaṃ hātumarhasi.
6. ikṣvākūṇām kule jātaḥ sākṣāt dharmaḥ iva aparaḥ
dhṛtimān suvrataḥ śrīmān na dharmam hātum arhasi
6. ikṣvākūṇām kule jātaḥ sākṣāt dharmaḥ iva aparaḥ
dhṛtimān suvrataḥ śrīmān (tvam) dharmam hātum na arhasi
6. Born in the lineage of the Ikṣvākus, you are like another manifest form of natural law (dharma) itself. Possessing fortitude, pious, and glorious, you ought not to abandon your (dharma).
त्रिषु लोकेषु विख्यातो धर्मात्मा इति राघवः ।
स्वधर्मं प्रतिपद्यस्व नाधर्मं वोढुमर्हसि ॥७॥
7. triṣu lokeṣu vikhyāto dharmātmā iti rāghavaḥ ,
svadharmaṃ pratipadyasva nādharmaṃ voḍhumarhasi.
7. triṣu lokeṣu vikhyātaḥ dharmātmā iti rāghavaḥ
svadharmaṃ pratipadyasva na adharmaṃ voḍhum arhasi
7. rāghava triṣu lokeṣu dharmātmā iti vikhyātaḥ
svadharmaṃ pratipadyasva adharmaṃ voḍhum na arhasi
7. O Rāghava, you are renowned in the three worlds as a soul whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is righteousness. Therefore, uphold your own natural law (dharma); you ought not to bear unrighteousness (adharma).
संश्रुत्यैवं करिष्यामीत्यकुर्वाणस्य राघव ।
इष्टापूर्तवधो भूयात्तस्माद् रामं विसर्जय ॥८॥
8. saṃśrutyaivaṃ kariṣyāmītyakurvāṇasya rāghava ,
iṣṭāpūrtavadho bhūyāttasmād rāmaṃ visarjaya.
8. saṃśrutya evaṃ kariṣyāmi iti akurvāṇasya rāghava
iṣṭāpūrtavadhaḥ bhūyāt tasmāt rāmaṃ visarjaya
8. rāghava evaṃ kariṣyāmi iti saṃśrutya akurvāṇasya
iṣṭāpūrtavadhaḥ bhūyāt tasmāt rāmaṃ visarjaya
8. O Rāghava, for one who, having vowed 'I will do this,' fails to act, may there be the destruction of his merits (iṣṭāpūrta). Therefore, release Rāma.
कृतास्त्रमकृतास्त्रं वा नैनं शक्ष्यन्ति राक्षसाः ।
गुप्तं कुशिकपुत्रेण ज्वलनेनामृतं यथा ॥९॥
9. kṛtāstramakṛtāstraṃ vā nainaṃ śakṣyanti rākṣasāḥ ,
guptaṃ kuśikaputreṇa jvalanenāmṛtaṃ yathā.
9. kṛtāstraṃ akṛtāstraṃ vā na enaṃ śakṣyanti rākṣasāḥ
guptaṃ kuśikaputreṇa jvalanena amṛtaṃ yathā
9. raākṣasāḥ enaṃ kṛtāstraṃ vā akṛtāstraṃ vā na
śakṣyanti kuśikaputreṇa guptaṃ jvalanena amṛtaṃ yathā
9. Whether armed or unarmed, the Rākṣasas will not be able to overcome him, for he is protected by the son of Kuśika, just as ambrosia is protected by fire.
एष विग्रहवान्धर्म एष वीर्यवतां वरः ।
एष बुद्ध्याधिको लोके तपसश्च परायणम् ॥१०॥
10. eṣa vigrahavāndharma eṣa vīryavatāṃ varaḥ ,
eṣa buddhyādhiko loke tapasaśca parāyaṇam.
10. eṣaḥ vigrahavān dharmaḥ eṣaḥ vīryavatāṃ varaḥ
eṣaḥ buddhyādhikaḥ loke tapasas ca parāyaṇam
10. eṣaḥ vigrahavān dharmaḥ eṣaḥ vīryavatāṃ varaḥ
eṣaḥ loke buddhyādhikaḥ ca tapasas parāyaṇam
10. This (Rāma) is the personification of natural law (dharma); he is the best among the valiant. In the world, he is superior in intellect, and he is the ultimate refuge of spiritual austerity (tapas).
एषो ऽस्त्रान् विविधान् वेत्ति त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे ।
नैनमन्यः पुमान् वेत्ति न च वेत्स्यन्ति के चन ॥११॥
11. eṣo'strān vividhān vetti trailokye sacarācare ,
nainamanyaḥ pumān vetti na ca vetsyanti ke cana.
11. eṣaḥ astrān vividhān vetti trailokye sacarācare
na enam anyaḥ pumān vetti na ca vetsyanti ke cana
11. eṣaḥ trailokye sacarācare vividhān astrān vetti
anyaḥ pumān enam na vetti ca ke cana na vetsyanti
11. This one knows various weapons throughout the three worlds, including all moving and unmoving beings. No other man knows him, nor will anyone else ever know him.
न देवा नर्षयः के चिन्नासुरा न च राक्षसाः ।
गन्धर्वयक्षप्रवराः सकिंनरमहोरगाः ॥१२॥
12. na devā narṣayaḥ ke cinnāsurā na ca rākṣasāḥ ,
gandharvayakṣapravarāḥ sakiṃnaramahoragāḥ.
12. na devāḥ na ṛṣayaḥ ke cit na asurāḥ na ca rākṣasāḥ
gandharvayakṣapravarāḥ sakiṃnaramahoragāḥ
12. devāḥ na ṛṣayaḥ na ke cit asurāḥ na ca rākṣasāḥ
gandharvayakṣapravarāḥ sakiṃnaramahoragāḥ na
12. Neither gods nor sages, nor any asuras (demons), nor rākṣasas (demons), nor even the foremost among gandharvas and yakṣas, along with kiṃnaras and great uragas (serpents), know him.
सर्वास्त्राणि कृशाश्वस्य पुत्राः परमधार्मिकाः ।
कौशिकाय पुरा दत्ता यदा राज्यं प्रशासति ॥१३॥
13. sarvāstrāṇi kṛśāśvasya putrāḥ paramadhārmikāḥ ,
kauśikāya purā dattā yadā rājyaṃ praśāsati.
13. sarva-astrāṇi kṛśāśvasya putrāḥ parama-dhārmikāḥ
kauśikāya purā dattāḥ yadā rājyam praśāsati
13. sarva-astrāṇi kṛśāśvasya parama-dhārmikāḥ putrāḥ
kauśikāya purā dattāḥ yadā rājyam praśāsati
13. All these weapons (sarvāstrāṇi) are the sons of Kṛśāśva, who are supremely righteous (dharma). They were given to Kauśika formerly, when he was ruling the kingdom.
ते ऽपि पुत्राः कृशाश्वस्य प्रजापतिसुतासुताः ।
नैकरूपा महावीर्या दीप्तिमन्तो जयावहाः ॥१४॥
14. te'pi putrāḥ kṛśāśvasya prajāpatisutāsutāḥ ,
naikarūpā mahāvīryā dīptimanto jayāvahāḥ.
14. te api putrāḥ kṛśāśvasya prajāpatisutāsutāḥ
na ekarūpāḥ mahāvīryāḥ dīptimantaḥ jayāvahāḥ
14. te api kṛśāśvasya putrāḥ prajāpatisutāsutāḥ
na ekarūpāḥ mahāvīryāḥ dīptimantaḥ jayāvahāḥ
14. Those sons of Kṛśāśva, who are also the grandsons of Prajāpati's daughter, are not of a single form but possess great valor, are radiant, and bring victory.
जया च सुप्रभा चैव दक्षकन्ये सुमध्यमे ।
ते सुवाते ऽस्त्रशस्त्राणि शतं परम भास्वरम् ॥१५॥
15. jayā ca suprabhā caiva dakṣakanye sumadhyame ,
te suvāte'straśastrāṇi śataṃ parama bhāsvaram.
15. jayā ca suprabhā ca eva dakṣa-kanye sumadhyame
te suvāte astra-śastrāṇi śataṃ parama bhāsvaram
15. jayā ca suprabhā ca eva dakṣa-kanye sumadhyame
te śataṃ parama bhāsvaram astra-śastrāṇi suvāte
15. Jaya and Suprabhā, the slender-waisted daughters of Dakṣa, begot a hundred supremely brilliant divine missiles and weapons.
पञ्चाशतं सुतांल् लेभे जया नाम वरान्पुरा ।
वधायासुरसैन्यानाममेयान् कामरूपिणः ॥१६॥
16. pañcāśataṃ sutāṃl lebhe jayā nāma varānpurā ,
vadhāyāsurasainyānāmameyān kāmarūpiṇaḥ.
16. pañcāśataṃ sutān lebhe jayā nāma varān purā
| vadhāya asura-sainyānām ameyān kāma-rūpiṇaḥ
16. jayā nāma purā pañcāśataṃ varān sutān ameyān
kāma-rūpiṇaḥ asura-sainyānām vadhāya lebhe
16. Jaya, in the past, begot fifty excellent sons, immeasurable and capable of assuming any form at will, for the destruction of the asura armies.
सुप्रभाजनयच्चापि पुत्रान्पञ्चाशतं पुनः ।
संहारान्नाम दुर्धर्षान्दुराक्रामान्बलीयसः ॥१७॥
17. suprabhājanayaccāpi putrānpañcāśataṃ punaḥ ,
saṃhārānnāma durdharṣāndurākrāmānbalīyasaḥ.
17. suprabhā ajanayat ca api putrān pañcāśataṃ punaḥ
| saṃhārān nāma durdharṣān durākrāmān balīyasaḥ
17. suprabhā ca api punaḥ pañcāśataṃ putrān saṃhārān
nāma durdharṣān durākrāmān balīyasaḥ ajanayat
17. And Suprabhā also begot fifty more sons, named Saṃhāras, who were formidable, unassailable, and exceedingly powerful.
तानि चास्त्राणि वेत्त्येष यथावत् कुशिकात्मजः ।
अपूर्वाणां च जनने शक्तो भूयश्च धर्मवित् ॥१८॥
18. tāni cāstrāṇi vettyeṣa yathāvat kuśikātmajaḥ ,
apūrvāṇāṃ ca janane śakto bhūyaśca dharmavit.
18. tāni ca astrāṇi vetti eṣa yathāvat kuśikātmajaḥ
| apūrvāṇām ca janane śaktaḥ bhūyaḥ ca dharma-vit
18. eṣa kuśikātmajaḥ tāni ca astrāṇi yathāvat vetti
ca apūrvāṇām janane ca bhūyaḥ dharma-vit śaktaḥ
18. And this son of Kuśika (Viśvāmitra) knows those missiles and weapons precisely, and he is also capable of generating new, unprecedented ones. Furthermore, he is a knower of (natural) law (dharma).
एवं वीर्यो महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।
न रामगमने राजन् संशयं गन्तुमर्हसि ॥१९॥
19. evaṃ vīryo mahātejā viśvāmitro mahātapāḥ ,
na rāmagamane rājan saṃśayaṃ gantumarhasi.
19. evam vīryaḥ mahātejāḥ viśvāmitraḥ mahātapāḥ
na rāmagamane rājan saṃśayam gantum arhasi
19. rājan,
evaṃ vīryaḥ mahātejāḥ mahātapāḥ viśvāmitraḥ rāmagamane saṃśayam gantum na arhasi
19. O King, you should not harbor any doubt regarding Rāma's departure, for Viśvāmitra possesses such valor, great splendor, and immense ascetic power (tapas).
