वाक्यमेतत्तु वैदेह्या व्याहृतं भर्तृभक्तया ।
श्रुत्वा धर्मे स्थितो रामः प्रत्युवाचाथ मैथिलीम् ॥१॥
1. vākyametattu vaidehyā vyāhṛtaṃ bhartṛbhaktayā ,
śrutvā dharme sthito rāmaḥ pratyuvācātha maithilīm.

1. This statement was indeed uttered by the Princess of Videha (Sītā), who was deeply devoted to her husband. Having heard this, Rāma, who was firm in his natural law (dharma), then replied to Maithilī.
हितमुक्तं त्वया देवि स्निग्धया सदृशं वचः ।
कुलं व्यपदिशन्त्या च धर्मज्ञे जनकात्मजे ॥२॥
2. hitamuktaṃ tvayā devi snigdhayā sadṛśaṃ vacaḥ ,
kulaṃ vyapadiśantyā ca dharmajñe janakātmaje.
2. hitam uktam tvayā devi snigdhayā sadṛśam vaćaḥ
kulam vyapadiśantyā ca dharmajñe janakātmaje
2. devi snigdhayā kulam vyapadiśantyā ca dharmajñe

2. O divine one, O daughter of Janaka, O knower of natural law (dharma), the beneficial and appropriate words have been spoken by you, who are affectionate and upholding your noble lineage.
किं तु वक्ष्याम्यहं देवि त्वयैवोक्तमिदं वचः ।
क्षत्रियैर्धार्यते चापो नार्तशब्दो भवेदिति ॥३॥
3. kiṃ tu vakṣyāmyahaṃ devi tvayaivoktamidaṃ vacaḥ ,
kṣatriyairdhāryate cāpo nārtaśabdo bhavediti.
3. kim tu vakṣyāmi aham devi tvayā eva uktam idam vacaḥ
kṣatriyaiḥ dhāryate ca cāpaḥ na ārtaśabdaḥ bhavet iti
3. devi aham kim tu idam vacaḥ tvayā eva uktam vakṣyāmi
iti kṣatriyaiḥ cāpaḥ ca dhāryate ārtaśabdaḥ na bhavet
3. But, O goddess, I will repeat this very statement that you yourself made: 'Bows (cāpa) are wielded by kshatriyas so that no cry of distress should ever be heard.'
ते चार्ता दण्डकारण्ये मुनयः संशितव्रताः ।
मां सीते स्वयमागम्य शरण्याः शरणं गताः ॥४॥
4. te cārtā daṇḍakāraṇye munayaḥ saṃśitavratāḥ ,
māṃ sīte svayamāgamya śaraṇyāḥ śaraṇaṃ gatāḥ.
4. te ca ārtāḥ daṇḍakāraṇye munayaḥ saṃśitavratāḥ
mām sīte svayam āgamya śaraṇyāḥ śaraṇam gatāḥ
4. sīte te ārtāḥ saṃśitavratāḥ munayaḥ daṇḍakāraṇye
svayam mām āgamya śaraṇyāḥ śaraṇam gatāḥ
4. O Sītā, those afflicted sages, firm in their vows (saṃśitavratāḥ), residing in the Daṇḍaka forest, came to me personally and sought refuge (śaraṇa), as they were deserving of protection.
वसन्तो धर्मनिरता वने मूलफलाशनाः ।
न लभन्ते सुखं भीता राक्षसैः क्रूरकर्मभिः ॥५॥
5. vasanto dharmaniratā vane mūlaphalāśanāḥ ,
na labhante sukhaṃ bhītā rākṣasaiḥ krūrakarmabhiḥ.
5. vasantaḥ dharmaniratāḥ vane mūlaphalāśanāḥ na
labhante sukham bhītāḥ rākṣasaiḥ krūrakarmabhiḥ
5. vane vasantaḥ dharmaniratāḥ mūlaphalāśanāḥ bhītāḥ
krūrakarmabhiḥ rākṣasaiḥ sukham na labhante
5. Those who dwell in the forest, devoted to righteous conduct (dharma) and subsisting on roots and fruits, do not experience happiness, being terrified by rākṣasas of cruel actions.
काले काले च निरता नियमैर्विविधैर्वने ।
भक्ष्यन्ते राक्षसैर्भीमैर्नरमांसोपजीविभिः ॥६॥
6. kāle kāle ca niratā niyamairvividhairvane ,
bhakṣyante rākṣasairbhīmairnaramāṃsopajīvibhiḥ.
6. kāle kāle ca niratāḥ niyamaiḥ vividhaiḥ vane
bhakṣyante rākṣasaiḥ bhīmaiḥ naramāṃsopajīvibhiḥ
6. vane ca kāle kāle vividhaiḥ niyamaiḥ niratāḥ
bhīmaiḥ naramāṃsopajīvibhiḥ rākṣasaiḥ bhakṣyante
6. And in the forest, even while engaged in various religious observances (niyamāḥ) from time to time, they are devoured by terrifying rākṣasas who live by consuming human flesh.
ते भक्ष्यमाणा मुनयो दण्डकारण्यवासिनः ।
अस्मानभ्यवपद्येति मामूचुर्द्विजसत्तमाः ॥७॥
7. te bhakṣyamāṇā munayo daṇḍakāraṇyavāsinaḥ ,
asmānabhyavapadyeti māmūcurdvijasattamāḥ.
7. te bhakṣyamāṇāḥ munayaḥ daṇḍakāraṇyavāsinaḥ
asmān abhyavapadya iti mām ūcuḥ dvijasattamāḥ
7. te dvijasattamāḥ daṇḍakāraṇyavāsinaḥ munayaḥ
bhakṣyamāṇāḥ iti asmān abhyavapadya mām ūcuḥ
7. Those excellent Brahmins, the sages residing in the Daṇḍaka forest, being devoured (by Rākṣasas), said to me, 'You should come to our aid.'
मया तु वचनं श्रुत्वा तेषामेवं मुखाच्च्युतम् ।
कृत्वा चरणशुश्रूषां वाक्यमेतदुदाहृतम् ॥८॥
8. mayā tu vacanaṃ śrutvā teṣāmevaṃ mukhāccyutam ,
kṛtvā caraṇaśuśrūṣāṃ vākyametadudāhṛtam.
8. mayā tu vacanam śrutvā teṣām evam mukhāt cyutam
kṛtvā caraṇaśuśrūṣām vākyam etat udāhṛtam
8. tu mayā teṣām mukhāt evam cyutam vacanam śrutvā
caraṇaśuśrūṣām kṛtvā etat vākyam udāhṛtam
8. Having heard their words thus uttered from their mouths, I indeed rendered service to their feet and then spoke this statement.
प्रसीदन्तु भवन्तो मे ह्रीरेषा हि ममातुला ।
यदीदृशैरहं विप्रैरुपस्थेयैरुपस्थितः ।
किं करोमीति च मया व्याहृतं द्विजसंनिधौ ॥९॥
9. prasīdantu bhavanto me hrīreṣā hi mamātulā ,
yadīdṛśairahaṃ viprairupastheyairupasthitaḥ ,
kiṃ karomīti ca mayā vyāhṛtaṃ dvijasaṃnidhau.
9. prasīdantu bhavantaḥ me hrīḥ eṣā hi
mama atulā yadi īdṛśaiḥ aham vipraiḥ
upastheyaiḥ upasthitaḥ kim karomi
iti ca mayā vyāhṛtam dvijasaṃnidhau
9. bhavantaḥ me prasīdantu hi eṣā mama
atulā hrīḥ yadi aham īdṛśaiḥ
upastheyaiḥ vipraiḥ upasthitaḥ ca kim
karomi iti mayā dvijasaṃnidhau vyāhṛtam
9. May you (sages) be gracious to me; for this is indeed an incomparable shame for me, that I am being attended by such venerable Brahmins. 'What can I do?' - this too was uttered by me in the presence of the Brahmins.
सर्वैरेव समागम्य वागियं समुदाहृता ।
राक्षसैर्दण्डकारण्ये बहुभिः कामरूपिभिः ।
अर्दिताः स्म भृशं राम भवान्नस्त्रातुमर्हति ॥१०॥
10. sarvaireva samāgamya vāgiyaṃ samudāhṛtā ,
rākṣasairdaṇḍakāraṇye bahubhiḥ kāmarūpibhiḥ ,
arditāḥ sma bhṛśaṃ rāma bhavānnastrātumarhati.
10. sarvaiḥ eva samāgamya vāk iyam
samudāhṛtā rākṣasaiḥ daṇḍakāraṇye
bahubhiḥ kāmarūpibhiḥ arditāḥ sma
bhṛśam rāma bhavān naḥ trātum arhati
10. eva sarvaiḥ samāgamya iyam vāk
samudāhṛtā rāma daṇḍakāraṇye bahubhiḥ
kāmarūpibhiḥ rākṣasaiḥ bhṛśam
arditāḥ sma bhavān naḥ trātum arhati
10. Then, all of them, having gathered together, uttered these words: 'O Rāma, we are severely tormented by numerous Rākṣasas in the Daṇḍaka forest, who can assume any form at will. You ought to protect us.'
होमकाले तु संप्राप्ते पर्वकालेषु चानघ ।
धर्षयन्ति स्म दुर्धर्षा राक्षसाः पिशिताशनाः ॥११॥
11. homakāle tu saṃprāpte parvakāleṣu cānagha ,
dharṣayanti sma durdharṣā rākṣasāḥ piśitāśanāḥ.
11. homakāle tu samprāpte parvakāleṣu ca anagha
dharṣayanti sma durdharṣāḥ rākṣasāḥ piśitāśanāḥ
11. anagha homakāle parvakāleṣu ca samprāpte
durdharṣāḥ piśitāśanāḥ rākṣasāḥ dharṣayanti sma
11. O blameless one, when the time for ritual offerings (homa) arrived and during auspicious times, formidable flesh-eating demons (rākṣasas) used to harass us.
राक्षसैर्धर्षितानां च तापसानां तपस्विनाम् ।
गतिं मृगयमाणानां भवान्नः परमा गतिः ॥१२॥
12. rākṣasairdharṣitānāṃ ca tāpasānāṃ tapasvinām ,
gatiṃ mṛgayamāṇānāṃ bhavānnaḥ paramā gatiḥ.
12. rākṣasaiḥ dharṣitānāṃ ca tāpasānāṃ tapasvinām
gatim mṛgayamāṇānāṃ bhavān naḥ paramā gatiḥ
12. rākṣasaiḥ dharṣitānāṃ ca tāpasānāṃ tapasvinām
gatim mṛgayamāṇānāṃ naḥ bhavān paramā gatiḥ
12. And for those ascetics who practice austerities (tapas), harassed by the demons (rākṣasas) and seeking refuge, you are our ultimate haven.
कामं तपः प्रभावेन शक्ता हन्तुं निशाचरान् ।
चिरार्जितं तु नेच्छामस्तपः खण्डयितुं वयम् ॥१३॥
13. kāmaṃ tapaḥ prabhāvena śaktā hantuṃ niśācarān ,
cirārjitaṃ tu necchāmastapaḥ khaṇḍayituṃ vayam.
13. kāmam tapaḥ prabhāvena śaktāḥ hantum niśācarān
cira-arjitam tu na icchāmaḥ tapaḥ khaṇḍayitum vayam
13. kāmam tapaḥ prabhāvena niśācarān hantum śaktāḥ.
tu vayam cira-arjitam tapaḥ khaṇḍayitum na icchāmaḥ.
13. Indeed, by the power of our asceticism (tapas), we are capable of killing the night-wandering demons. However, we do not wish to diminish our long-accumulated ascetic merit (tapas).
बहुविघ्नं तपोनित्यं दुश्चरं चैव राघव ।
तेन शापं न मुञ्चामो भक्ष्यमाणाश्च राक्षसैः ॥१४॥
14. bahuvighnaṃ taponityaṃ duścaraṃ caiva rāghava ,
tena śāpaṃ na muñcāmo bhakṣyamāṇāśca rākṣasaiḥ.
14. bahu-vighnam tapaḥ nityam duścaram ca eva rāghava
tena śāpam na muñcāmaḥ bhakṣyamāṇāḥ ca rākṣasaiḥ
14. rāghava tapaḥ bahu-vighnam nityam ca eva duścaram.
tena rākṣasaiḥ bhakṣyamāṇāḥ ca śāpam na muñcāmaḥ.
14. O Raghava, asceticism (tapas) is always fraught with many obstacles and is indeed difficult to practice. Therefore, we do not unleash a curse, even when we are being devoured by the demons (rākṣasas).
तदर्द्यमानान् रक्षोभिर्दण्डकारण्यवासिभिः ।
रक्षनस्त्वं सह भ्रात्रा त्वन्नाथा हि वयं वने ॥१५॥
15. tadardyamānān rakṣobhirdaṇḍakāraṇyavāsibhiḥ ,
rakṣanastvaṃ saha bhrātrā tvannāthā hi vayaṃ vane.
15. tat ardyamānān rakṣobhiḥ daṇḍakāraṇyavāsibhiḥ rakṣan
naḥ tvam saha bhrātrā tvannāthāḥ hi vayam vane
15. vayam hi vane tvannāthāḥ tat tvam saha bhrātrā
daṇḍakāraṇyavāsibhiḥ rakṣobhiḥ ardyamānān naḥ rakṣan
15. Therefore, you, along with your brother, must protect us who are being tormented by the demons dwelling in the Daṇḍaka forest. Indeed, in this forest, we have you as our protector.
मया चैतद्वचः श्रुत्वा कार्त्स्न्येन परिपालनम् ।
ऋषीणां दण्डकारण्ये संश्रुतं जनकात्मजे ॥१६॥
16. mayā caitadvacaḥ śrutvā kārtsnyena paripālanam ,
ṛṣīṇāṃ daṇḍakāraṇye saṃśrutaṃ janakātmaje.
16. mayā ca etad vacaḥ śrutvā kārtsnyena paripālanam
ṛṣīṇām daṇḍakāraṇye saṃśrutam janakātmaje
16. janakātmaje mayā ca etad vacaḥ śrutvā daṇḍakāraṇye
ṛṣīṇām kārtsnyena paripālanam saṃśrutam
16. O daughter of Janaka, having heard this request, I have indeed promised the sages in the Daṇḍaka forest their complete protection.
संश्रुत्य च न शक्ष्यामि जीवमानः प्रतिश्रवम् ।
मुनीनामन्यथा कर्तुं सत्यमिष्टं हि मे सदा ॥१७॥
17. saṃśrutya ca na śakṣyāmi jīvamānaḥ pratiśravam ,
munīnāmanyathā kartuṃ satyamiṣṭaṃ hi me sadā.
17. saṃśrutya ca na śakṣyāmi jīvamānaḥ pratiśravam
munīnām anyathā kartum satyam iṣṭam hi me sadā
17. ca saṃśrutya jīvamānaḥ munīnām pratiśravam
anyathā kartum na śakṣyāmi hi satyam me sadā iṣṭam
17. And having made a promise, I shall not be able to break that promise to the sages as long as I live. Indeed, truth is always dear to me.
अप्यहं जीवितं जह्यां त्वां वा सीते सलक्ष्मणाम् ।
न तु प्रतिज्ञां संश्रुत्य ब्राह्मणेभ्यो विशेषतः ॥१८॥
18. apyahaṃ jīvitaṃ jahyāṃ tvāṃ vā sīte salakṣmaṇām ,
na tu pratijñāṃ saṃśrutya brāhmaṇebhyo viśeṣataḥ.
18. api aham jīvitam jahyām tvām vā sīte salakṣmaṇām
na tu pratijñām saṃśrutya brāhmaṇebhyaḥ viśeṣataḥ
18. sīte api aham jīvitam vā tvām salakṣmaṇām jahyām
tu na pratijñām saṃśrutya viśeṣataḥ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ
18. O Sītā, I would even give up my life or you along with Lakṣmaṇa, but I would certainly not break a promise made, especially to Brahmins.
तदवश्यं मया कार्यमृषीणां परिपालनम् ।
अनुक्तेनापि वैदेहि प्रतिज्ञाय तु किं पुनः ॥१९॥
19. tadavaśyaṃ mayā kāryamṛṣīṇāṃ paripālanam ,
anuktenāpi vaidehi pratijñāya tu kiṃ punaḥ.
19. tad avaśyam mayā kāryam ṛṣīṇām paripālanam
anuktena api vaidehi pratijñāya tu kim punaḥ
19. vaidehi ṛṣīṇām paripālanam mayā avaśyam
kāryam anuktena api pratijñāya tu kim punaḥ
19. Therefore, the protection of the sages must certainly be carried out by me. O Vaidehi, what more needs to be said, considering it has already been promised, even if it were unspoken?
मम स्नेहाच्च सौहार्दादिदमुक्तं त्वया वचः ।
परितुष्टो ऽस्म्यहं सीते न ह्यनिष्टो ऽनुशिष्यते ।
सदृशं चानुरूपं च कुलस्य तव शोभने ॥२०॥
20. mama snehācca sauhārdādidamuktaṃ tvayā vacaḥ ,
parituṣṭo'smyahaṃ sīte na hyaniṣṭo'nuśiṣyate ,
sadṛśaṃ cānurūpaṃ ca kulasya tava śobhane.
20. mama snehāt ca sauhārdāt idam uktam
tvayā vacaḥ parituṣṭaḥ asmi aham
sīte na hi aniṣṭaḥ anuśiṣyate sadṛśam
ca anurūpam ca kulasya tava śobhane
20. sīte mama snehāt ca sauhārdāt tvayā
idam vacaḥ uktam aham parituṣṭaḥ
asmi hi aniṣṭaḥ na anuśiṣyate śobhane
ca tava kulasya sadṛśam ca anurūpam
20. These words were spoken by you, inspired by your affection (sneha) and friendship for me. I am greatly pleased, O Sita. Indeed, one who is disliked is not typically offered counsel. Moreover, this advice is fitting and proper for your noble lineage, O beautiful one.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा वचनं महात्मा सीतां प्रियां मैथिल राजपुत्रीम् ।
रामो धनुष्मान् सहलक्ष्मणेन जगाम रम्याणि तपोवनानि ॥२१॥
21. ityevamuktvā vacanaṃ mahātmā sītāṃ priyāṃ maithila rājaputrīm ,
rāmo dhanuṣmān sahalakṣmaṇena jagāma ramyāṇi tapovanāni.
21. iti evam uktvā vacanam mahātmā sītām priyām maithila rājaputrīm
rāmaḥ dhanuṣmān sahalakṣmaṇena jagāma ramyāṇi tapovanāni
21. mahātmā rāmaḥ maithila rājaputrīm priyām sītām iti evam vacanam
uktvā dhanuṣmān sahalakṣmaṇena ramyāṇi tapovanāni jagāma
21. Having thus spoken these words to his beloved Sita, the princess of Mithila, the great-souled (mahātman) Rama, bearing his bow, proceeded to the delightful forest hermitages (tapovana) with Lakshmana.
