ततो जाम्बवतो वाक्यमगृह्णन्त वनौकसः ।
अङ्गदप्रमुखा वीरा हनूमांश्च महाकपिः ॥१॥
1. tato jāmbavato vākyamagṛhṇanta vanaukasaḥ ,

1. Then, the forest-dwelling monkeys (vanaukasaḥ), including the heroes led by Angada, and the great monkey Hanuman, accepted Jambavan's words.
प्रीतिमन्तस्ततः सर्वे वायुपुत्रपुरःसराः ।
महेन्द्राग्रं परित्यज्य पुप्लुवुः प्लवगर्षभाः ॥२॥
2. prītimantastataḥ sarve vāyuputrapuraḥsarāḥ ,
mahendrāgraṃ parityajya pupluvuḥ plavagarṣabhāḥ.

2. Then, all those best among the monkeys, joyful and led by the son of Vayu (Hanuman), sprang forth, leaving the peak of Mahendra mountain.
मेरुमन्दरसंकाशा मत्ता इव महागजाः ।
छादयन्त इवाकाशं महाकाया महाबलाः ॥३॥
3. merumandarasaṃkāśā mattā iva mahāgajāḥ ,
chādayanta ivākāśaṃ mahākāyā mahābalāḥ.

3. मेरुमन्दरसंकाशाः मत्ताः महागजाः इव,
आकाशम् इव छादयन्तः,
महाकायाः महाबलाः
3. They were like massive, intoxicated elephants, resembling Mount Meru and Mandara, with huge bodies and immense strength, appearing as if they were covering the sky.
सभाज्यमानं भूतैस्तमात्मवन्तं महाबलम् ।
हनूमन्तं महावेगं वहन्त इव दृष्टिभिः ॥४॥
4. sabhājyamānaṃ bhūtaistamātmavantaṃ mahābalam ,
hanūmantaṃ mahāvegaṃ vahanta iva dṛṣṭibhiḥ.
4. sabhājyamānam bhūtaiḥ tam ātmavantam mahābalam
hanūmantam mahāvegam vahantaḥ iva dṛṣṭibhiḥ

4. All beings, as if carrying him with their gazes, honored that self-possessed, immensely powerful, and exceedingly swift Hanumān.
राघवे चार्थनिर्वृत्तिं भर्तुश्च परमं यशः ।
समाधाय समृद्धार्थाः कर्मसिद्धिभिरुन्नताः ॥५॥
5. rāghave cārthanirvṛttiṃ bhartuśca paramaṃ yaśaḥ ,
samādhāya samṛddhārthāḥ karmasiddhibhirunnatāḥ.
5. rāghave ca arthanirvṛttim bhartuḥ ca paramam yaśaḥ
samādhāya samṛddhārthāḥ karmasiddhibhiḥ unnatāḥ

5. With their minds set on the accomplishment of Rāma's purpose and their master's supreme glory, they were elevated, their objectives fulfilled through the success of their actions (karma).
प्रियाख्यानोन्मुखाः सर्वे सर्वे युद्धाभिनन्दिनः ।
सर्वे रामप्रतीकारे निश्चितार्था मनस्विनः ॥६॥
6. priyākhyānonmukhāḥ sarve sarve yuddhābhinandinaḥ ,
sarve rāmapratīkāre niścitārthā manasvinaḥ.

6. All were eager to tell good news, all were delighting in battle, and all high-minded (manasvin) individuals were resolute in their purpose of retaliating for Rāma.
प्लवमानाः खमाप्लुत्य ततस्ते काननौक्षकः ।
नन्दनोपममासेदुर्वनं द्रुमलतायुतम् ॥७॥
7. plavamānāḥ khamāplutya tataste kānanaukṣakaḥ ,
nandanopamamāsedurvanaṃ drumalatāyutam.
7. plavamānāḥ kham āplutya tataḥ te kānanaokasaḥ
nandanopamam āseduḥ vanam drumalatāyutam
7. kham āplutya plavamānāḥ tataḥ te kānanaokasaḥ

7. Having leaped up into the sky and flying, those forest-dwelling (vanara) monkeys then reached a grove resembling Nandan (Indra's garden), filled with trees and creepers.
यत्तन्मधुवनं नाम सुग्रीवस्याभिरक्षितम् ।
अधृष्यं सर्वभूतानां सर्वभूतमनोहरम् ॥८॥
8. yattanmadhuvanaṃ nāma sugrīvasyābhirakṣitam ,
adhṛṣyaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ sarvabhūtamanoharam.
8. yat tat madhuvanam nāma sugrīvasya abhirakṣitam
adhṛṣyam sarvabhūtānām sarvabhūtamanoharam
8. That which is named Madhuvana, protected by Sugriva, is unassailable by all beings and charming to the minds of all creatures.
यद् रक्षति महावीर्यः सदा दधिमुखः कपिः ।
मातुलः कपिमुख्यस्य सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः ॥९॥
9. yad rakṣati mahāvīryaḥ sadā dadhimukhaḥ kapiḥ ,
mātulaḥ kapimukhyasya sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ.
9. yat rakṣati mahāvīryaḥ sadā dadhimukhaḥ kapiḥ
mātulaḥ kapimukhyasya sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ
9. That (forest) is always guarded by the mighty monkey Dadhimukha, who is the maternal uncle of the great-souled chief of monkeys, Sugriva.
ते तद्वनमुपागम्य बभूवुः परमोत्कटाः ।
वानरा वानरेन्द्रस्य मनःकान्ततमं महत् ॥१०॥
10. te tadvanamupāgamya babhūvuḥ paramotkaṭāḥ ,
vānarā vānarendrasya manaḥkāntatamaṃ mahat.
10. te tat vanam upāgamya babhūvuḥ parama utkaṭāḥ
vānarāḥ vānarendrasya manaḥkāntatamam mahat
10. Having approached that great forest, which was most pleasing to the mind of the lord of monkeys (Sugriva), those monkeys became exceedingly excited.
ततस्ते वानरा हृष्टा दृष्ट्वा मधुवनं महत् ।
कुमारमभ्ययाचन्त मधूनि मधुपिङ्गलाः ॥११॥
11. tataste vānarā hṛṣṭā dṛṣṭvā madhuvanaṃ mahat ,
kumāramabhyayācanta madhūni madhupiṅgalāḥ.
11. tataḥ te vānarāḥ hṛṣṭāḥ dṛṣṭvā madhuvanam mahat
kumāram abhyayācanta madhūni madhupiṅgalāḥ
11. Thereupon, those delighted monkeys, having seen the great Madhuvana, and being honey-colored (from excitement or prior consumption), entreated the prince for honey.
ततः कुमारस्तान् वृद्धाञ्जाम्बवत्प्रमुखान् कपीन् ।
अनुमान्य ददौ तेषां निसर्गं मधुभक्षणे ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ kumārastān vṛddhāñjāmbavatpramukhān kapīn ,
anumānya dadau teṣāṃ nisargaṃ madhubhakṣaṇe.
12. tataḥ kumāraḥ tān vṛddhān jāmbavatpramukhān
kapīn anumānya dadau teṣām nisargam madhubhakṣaṇe
12. tataḥ kumāraḥ jāmbavatpramukhān tān vṛddhān
kapīn anumānya teṣām madhubhakṣaṇe nisargam dadau
12. Then, the prince, having respectfully acknowledged those elder monkeys headed by Jambavat, granted them permission to consume honey.
ततश्चानुमताः सर्वे संप्रहृष्टा वनौकसः ।
मुदिताश्च ततस्ते च प्रनृत्यन्ति ततस्ततः ॥१३॥
13. tataścānumatāḥ sarve saṃprahṛṣṭā vanaukasaḥ ,
muditāśca tataste ca pranṛtyanti tatastataḥ.
13. tataḥ ca anumatāḥ sarve samprahṛṣṭāḥ vanaukasaḥ
muditāḥ ca tataḥ te ca pranṛtyanti tataḥ tataḥ
13. tataḥ ca sarve anumatāḥ samprahṛṣṭāḥ muditāḥ
vanaukasaḥ ca tataḥ te tataḥ tataḥ pranṛtyanti
13. And then, all the forest-dwelling monkeys, having been granted permission, became overjoyed and joyful. Subsequently, they danced vigorously everywhere.
गायन्ति के चित् प्रणमन्ति के चिन्नृत्यन्ति के चित् प्रहसन्ति के चित् ।
पतन्ति के चिद्विचरन्ति के चित् प्लवन्ति के चित् प्रलपन्ति के चित् ॥१४॥
14. gāyanti ke cit praṇamanti ke cinnṛtyanti ke cit prahasanti ke cit ,
patanti ke cidvicaranti ke cit plavanti ke cit pralapanti ke cit.

14. Some sing, some bow down, some dance, some laugh loudly. Some fall, some wander about, some leap, some babble incoherently.
परस्परं के चिदुपाश्रयन्ते परस्परं के चिदतिब्रुवन्ते ।
द्रुमाद्द्रुमं के चिदभिप्लवन्ते क्षितौ नगाग्रान्निपतन्ति के चित् ॥१५॥
15. parasparaṃ ke cidupāśrayante parasparaṃ ke cidatibruvante ,
drumāddrumaṃ ke cidabhiplavante kṣitau nagāgrānnipatanti ke cit.

15. Some lean upon each other, and some speak excessively to each other. Some leap from tree to tree, while others fall from the treetops to the ground.
महीतलात् के चिदुदीर्णवेगा महाद्रुमाग्राण्यभिसंपतन्ते ।
गायन्तमन्यः प्रहसन्नुपैति हसन्तमन्यः प्रहसन्नुपैति ॥१६॥
16. mahītalāt ke cidudīrṇavegā mahādrumāgrāṇyabhisaṃpatante ,
gāyantamanyaḥ prahasannupaiti hasantamanyaḥ prahasannupaiti.
16. mahītalāt ke cit udīrṇavegāḥ mahādrumāgrāṇi abhisaṃpatante
gāyantam anyaḥ prahasan upaiti hasantam anyaḥ prahasan upaiti
16. mahītalāt ke cit udīrṇavegāḥ mahādrumāgrāṇi abhisaṃpatante
anyaḥ gāyantam prahasan upaiti anyaḥ hasantam prahasan upaiti
16. Some, with great speed, leap from the ground to the tops of tall trees. One approaches another who is singing, laughing loudly, and another approaches one who is laughing, also laughing loudly.
रुदन्तमन्यः प्ररुदन्नुपैति नुदन्तमन्यः प्रणुदन्नुपैति ।
समाकुलं तत् कपिसैन्यमासीन्मधुप्रपानोत्कट सत्त्वचेष्टम् ।
न चात्र कश्चिन्न बभूव मत्तो न चात्र कश्चिन्न बभूव तृप्तो ॥१७॥
17. rudantamanyaḥ prarudannupaiti nudantamanyaḥ praṇudannupaiti ,
samākulaṃ tat kapisainyamāsīnmadhuprapānotkaṭa sattvaceṣṭam ,
na cātra kaścinna babhūva matto na cātra kaścinna babhūva tṛpto.
17. rudantam anyaḥ prarudan upaiti nudantam anyaḥ
praṇudan upaiti samākulam tat kapisainyam āsīt
madhuprapānotkaṭasattvaceṣṭam na ca atra kaścit na
babhūva mattaḥ na ca atra kaścit na babhūva tṛptaḥ
17. rudantam anyaḥ prarudan upaiti nudantam anyaḥ
praṇudan upaiti tat kapisainyam samākulam
madhuprapānotkaṭasattvaceṣṭam āsīt ca atra kaścit mattaḥ
na babhūva ca atra kaścit tṛptaḥ na babhūva
17. Another approaches one who is crying, crying loudly; another approaches one who is pushing, pushing vigorously. That monkey army was utterly chaotic, exhibiting extreme energy from their honey-drinking spree. And there was no one there who was not intoxicated, nor was there anyone who was not completely satisfied.
ततो वनं तत् परिभक्ष्यमाणं द्रुमांश्च विध्वंसितपत्रपुष्पान् ।
समीक्ष्य कोपाद्दधिवक्त्रनामा निवारयामास कपिः कपींस्तान् ॥१८॥
18. tato vanaṃ tat paribhakṣyamāṇaṃ drumāṃśca vidhvaṃsitapatrapuṣpān ,
samīkṣya kopāddadhivaktranāmā nivārayāmāsa kapiḥ kapīṃstān.
18. tataḥ vanam tat paribhakṣyamāṇam
drumān ca vidhvaṃsitapatrapuṣpān
samīkṣya kopāt dadhivaktranāmā
nivārayāmāsa kapiḥ kapīn tān
18. tataḥ dadhivaktranāmā kapiḥ vanam
tat paribhakṣyamāṇam ca drumān
vidhvaṃsitapatrapuṣpān samīkṣya
kopāt tān kapīn nivārayāmāsa
18. Then, observing that forest being entirely ravaged and the trees stripped of their leaves and flowers, the monkey named Dadhimukha, filled with anger, stopped those other monkeys.
स तैः प्रवृद्धैः परिभर्त्स्यमानो वनस्य गोप्ता हरिवीरवृद्धः ।
चकार भूयो मतिमुग्रतेजा वनस्य रक्षां प्रति वानरेभ्यः ॥१९॥
19. sa taiḥ pravṛddhaiḥ paribhartsyamāno vanasya goptā harivīravṛddhaḥ ,
cakāra bhūyo matimugratejā vanasya rakṣāṃ prati vānarebhyaḥ.
19. saḥ taiḥ pravṛddhaiḥ paribhartsyemānaḥ
vanasya goptā harivīravṛddhaḥ
cakāra bhūyaḥ matim ugratejāḥ
vanasya rakṣām prati vānarebhyaḥ
19. ugratejāḥ vanasya goptā harivīravṛddhaḥ
saḥ taiḥ pravṛddhaiḥ
paribhartsyemānaḥ bhūyaḥ vānarebhyaḥ
vanasya rakṣām prati matim cakāra
19. Being severely reprimanded by those numerous and unruly monkeys, he, the aged monkey hero and fierce guardian of the forest, once again firmly resolved to protect the forest from the other monkeys.
उवाच कांश्चित् परुषाणि धृष्टमसक्तमन्यांश्च तलैर्जघान ।
समेत्य कैश्चित् कलहं चकार तथैव साम्नोपजगाम कांश्चित् ॥२०॥
20. uvāca kāṃścit paruṣāṇi dhṛṣṭamasaktamanyāṃśca talairjaghāna ,
sametya kaiścit kalahaṃ cakāra tathaiva sāmnopajagāma kāṃścit.

asaktam anyān ca talaiḥ jaghāna
sametya kaiścit kalaham cakāra
tathā eva sāmnā upajagāma kāṃścit

anyān ca asaktam talaiḥ jaghāna
kaiścit sametya kalaham cakāra
tathā eva kāṃścit sāmnā upajagāma
20. He boldly spoke harsh words to some, and without hesitation, struck others with his palms. He started a quarrel with some, and similarly, approached others with conciliatory words.
स तैर्मदाच्चाप्रतिवार्य वेगैर्बलाच्च तेनाप्रतिवार्यमाणैः ।
प्रधर्षितस्त्यक्तभयैः समेत्य प्रकृष्यते चाप्यनवेक्ष्य दोषम् ॥२१॥
21. sa tairmadāccāprativārya vegairbalācca tenāprativāryamāṇaiḥ ,
pradharṣitastyaktabhayaiḥ sametya prakṛṣyate cāpyanavekṣya doṣam.
21. saḥ taiḥ madāt ca aprativārya vegaiḥ
balāt ca tena aprativāryamāṇaiḥ
pradharṣitaḥ tyaktabhayaiḥ sametya
prakṛṣyate ca api anavekṣya doṣam
21. saḥ sametya tyaktabhayaiḥ madāt ca
balāt ca aprativārya vegaiḥ tena
aprativāryamāṇaiḥ taiḥ pradharṣitaḥ
ca api anavekṣya doṣam prakṛṣyate
21. He (Hanumān), assailed by these monkeys (vānaras) who, gathered together and fearless, were irresistible due to their intoxication and force, and whom he himself could not restrain, was dragged away by them, though he found no fault in their actions.
नखैस्तुदन्तो दशनैर्दशन्तस्तलैश्च पादैश्च समाप्नुवन्तः ।
मदात् कपिं तं कपयः समग्रा महावनं निर्विषयं च चक्रुः ॥२२॥
22. nakhaistudanto daśanairdaśantastalaiśca pādaiśca samāpnuvantaḥ ,
madāt kapiṃ taṃ kapayaḥ samagrā mahāvanaṃ nirviṣayaṃ ca cakruḥ.
22. nakhaiḥ tudantaḥ daśanaiḥ daśantaḥ
talaiḥ ca pādaiḥ ca samāpnuvantaḥ
madāt kapim tam kapayaḥ samagrāḥ
mahāvanam nirviṣayam ca cakruḥ
22. samagrāḥ kapayaḥ nakhaiḥ tudantaḥ
daśanaiḥ daśantaḥ talaiḥ ca pādaiḥ
ca samāpnuvantaḥ madāt tam kapim
mahāvanam ca nirviṣayam cakruḥ
22. All those monkeys (vānaras), piercing with their nails, biting with their teeth, and assailing with their palms and feet, due to their intoxication, made that monkey (Hanumān) and the great grove (mahāvanam) devoid of all enjoyment.
