रामो ऽपि रात्रिशेषेण तेनैव महदन्तरम् ।
जगाम पुरुषव्याघ्रः पितुराज्ञामनुस्मरन् ॥१॥
1. rāmo'pi rātriśeṣeṇa tenaiva mahadantaram ,
jagāma puruṣavyāghraḥ piturājñāmanusmaran.

1. The tiger among men, Rama, also traveled a great distance during the very remainder of that night, remembering his father's command.
तथैव गच्छतस्तस्य व्यपायाद् रजनी शिवा ।
उपास्य स शिवां संध्यां विषयान्तं व्यगाहत ॥२॥
2. tathaiva gacchatastasya vyapāyād rajanī śivā ,
upāsya sa śivāṃ saṃdhyāṃ viṣayāntaṃ vyagāhata.
2. tathā eva gacchataḥ tasya vyapāyāt rajanī śivā
upāsya saḥ śivām sandhyām viṣayāntam vyagāhata
2. tathā eva gacchataḥ tasya śivā rajanī vyapāyāt.
saḥ śivām sandhyām upāsya viṣayāntam vyagāhata
2. Just as he continued on his way, the auspicious night passed. Having performed the auspicious twilight worship, he entered the limits of that region.
ग्रामान् विकृष्टसीमांस्तान्पुष्पितानि वनानि च ।
पश्यन्नतिययौ शीघ्रं शरैरिव हयोत्तमैः ॥३॥
3. grāmān vikṛṣṭasīmāṃstānpuṣpitāni vanāni ca ,
paśyannatiyayau śīghraṃ śarairiva hayottamaiḥ.
3. grāmān vikṛṣṭasīmān tān puṣpitāni vanāni ca
paśyan atiyayau śīghram śaraiḥ iva hayauttamaiḥ
3. tān vikṛṣṭasīmān grāmān puṣpitāni vanāni ca paśyan,
śaraiḥ iva hayauttamaiḥ śīghram atiyayau
3. Beholding those villages with extensive boundaries and the flowering forests, he passed swiftly, like arrows or excellent horses.
शृण्वन् वाचो मनुष्याणां ग्रामसंवासवासिनाम् ।
राजानं धिग्दशरथं कामस्य वशमागतम् ॥४॥
4. śṛṇvan vāco manuṣyāṇāṃ grāmasaṃvāsavāsinām ,
rājānaṃ dhigdaśarathaṃ kāmasya vaśamāgatam.
4. śṛṇvan vācaḥ manuṣyāṇām grāmasaṃvāsavāsinām
rājānam dhik daśaratham kāmasya vaśam āgatam
4. grāmasaṃvāsavāsinām manuṣyāṇām vācaḥ śṛṇvan

4. Hearing the words of the people residing in the village settlements, (he heard them saying,) "Shame on King Dasharatha, who has fallen under the sway of desire (kāma)!"
हा नृशंसाद्य कैकेयी पापा पापानुबन्धिनी ।
तीक्ष्णा संभिन्नमर्यादा तीक्ष्णे कर्मणि वर्तते ॥५॥
5. hā nṛśaṃsādya kaikeyī pāpā pāpānubandhinī ,
tīkṣṇā saṃbhinnamaryādā tīkṣṇe karmaṇi vartate.
5. hā nṛśaṃsā adya kaikeyī pāpā pāpānubandhinī
tīkṣṇā saṃbhinnamaryādā tīkṣṇe karmaṇi vartate
5. hā adya nṛśaṃsā pāpā pāpānubandhinī tīkṣṇā
saṃbhinnamaryādā kaikeyī tīkṣṇe karmaṇi vartate
5. Alas! Today, the cruel Kaikeyi, who is sinful and intrinsically bound to evil (karma), harsh and one who has violated all limits of propriety, is engaged in a severe act.
या पुत्रमीदृशं राज्ञः प्रवासयति धार्मिकम् ।
वन वासे महाप्राज्ञं सानुक्रोशमतन्द्रितम् ॥६॥
6. yā putramīdṛśaṃ rājñaḥ pravāsayati dhārmikam ,
vana vāse mahāprājñaṃ sānukrośamatandritam.
6. yā putram īdṛśam rājñaḥ pravāsayāti dhārmikam
vana vāse mahāprājñam sānukrośam atandritam
6. yā īdṛśam dhārmikam mahāprājñam sānukrośam
atandritam rājñaḥ putram vana vāse pravāsayāti
6. She who banishes such a righteous (dhārmika), profoundly wise, compassionate, and diligent son of the king to forest dwelling.
एता वाचो मनुष्याणां ग्रामसंवासवासिनाम् ।
शृण्वन्नतिययौ वीरः कोसलान् कोसलेश्वरः ॥७॥
7. etā vāco manuṣyāṇāṃ grāmasaṃvāsavāsinām ,
śṛṇvannatiyayau vīraḥ kosalān kosaleśvaraḥ.
7. etāḥ vācaḥ manuṣyāṇām grāmasaṃvāsavāsinām
śṛṇvan atiyayau vīraḥ kosalān kosaleśvaraḥ
7. grāmasaṃvāsavāsinām manuṣyāṇām etāḥ vācaḥ
śṛṇvan vīraḥ kosaleśvaraḥ kosalān atiyayau
7. Hearing these words from the people dwelling in the villages, the heroic lord of Kosala (Rama) passed beyond the Kosala region.
ततो वेदश्रुतिं नाम शिववारिवहां नदीम् ।
उत्तीर्याभिमुखः प्रायादगस्त्याध्युषितां दिशम् ॥८॥
8. tato vedaśrutiṃ nāma śivavārivahāṃ nadīm ,
uttīryābhimukhaḥ prāyādagastyādhyuṣitāṃ diśam.
8. tataḥ vedaśrutim nāma śivavārivahām nadīm
uttīrya abhimukhaḥ prāyāt agastyādhyuṣitām diśam
8. tataḥ uttīrya nāma śivavārivahām vedaśrutim
nadīm abhimukhaḥ agastyādhyuṣitām diśam prāyāt
8. Then, having crossed the river named Vedaśruti, which carried auspicious waters, he proceeded, facing the direction (diś) inhabited by the sage Agastya.
गत्वा तु सुचिरं कालं ततः शीतजलां नदीम् ।
गोमतीं गोयुतानूपामतरत् सागरंगमाम् ॥९॥
9. gatvā tu suciraṃ kālaṃ tataḥ śītajalāṃ nadīm ,
gomatīṃ goyutānūpāmatarat sāgaraṃgamām.
9. gatvā tu suciraṃ kālam tataḥ śītajalām nadīm
gomatīm goyutānūpām atarat sāgaraṃgamām
9. tu suciraṃ kālam gatvā tataḥ śītajalām
goyutānūpām sāgaraṃgamām gomatīm nadīm atarat
9. Having traveled for a very long time, he then crossed the Gomati river, which had cold waters, was rich in cattle and lowlands, and flowed towards the ocean.
गोमतीं चाप्यतिक्रम्य राघवः शीघ्रगैर्हयैः ।
मयूरहंसाभिरुतां ततार स्यन्दिकां नदीम् ॥१०॥
10. gomatīṃ cāpyatikramya rāghavaḥ śīghragairhayaiḥ ,
mayūrahaṃsābhirutāṃ tatāra syandikāṃ nadīm.
10. gomatīm ca api atikramya rāghavaḥ śīghragaiḥ
hayaiḥ mayūrahaṃsābhirutām tatāra syandikām nadīm
10. rāghavaḥ gomatīm ca api atikramya śīghragaiḥ
hayaiḥ mayūrahaṃsābhirutām syandikām nadīm tatāra
10. And having also crossed the Gomati, Rama (rāghavaḥ) then, with his swift-moving horses, crossed the Syandika river, which was resounding with the cries of peacocks and swans.
स महीं मनुना राज्ञा दत्तामिक्ष्वाकवे पुरा ।
स्फीतां राष्ट्रावृतां रामो वैदेहीमन्वदर्शयत् ॥११॥
11. sa mahīṃ manunā rājñā dattāmikṣvākave purā ,
sphītāṃ rāṣṭrāvṛtāṃ rāmo vaidehīmanvadarśayat.
11. sa mahīm manunā rājñā dattām ikṣvākave purā
sphītām rāṣṭrāvṛtām rāmaḥ vaidehīm anvadarśayat
11. saḥ rāmaḥ vaidehīm anvadarśayat sphītām rāṣṭrāvṛtām
mahīm purā rājñā manunā ikṣvākave dattām
11. He, Rama, then showed Vaidehi (Sītā) that prosperous land, covered with kingdoms, which King Manu had formerly given to Ikshvaku.
सूत इत्येव चाभाष्य सारथिं तमभीक्ष्णशः ।
हंसमत्तस्वरः श्रीमानुवाच पुरुषर्षभः ॥१२॥
12. sūta ityeva cābhāṣya sārathiṃ tamabhīkṣṇaśaḥ ,
haṃsamattasvaraḥ śrīmānuvāca puruṣarṣabhaḥ.
12. sūta iti eva ca ābhāṣya sārathim tam abhīkṣṇaśaḥ
haṃsamattasvaraḥ śrīmān uvāca puruṣarṣabhaḥ
12. śrīmān puruṣarṣabhaḥ haṃsamattasvaraḥ tam sārathim
sūta iti eva ca abhīkṣṇaśaḥ ābhāṣya uvāca
12. And having repeatedly addressed that charioteer with the words 'Charioteer (sūta)!', the glorious best among men (puruṣarṣabhaḥ), whose voice was like that of a joyous swan, spoke.
कदाहं पुनरागम्य सरय्वाः पुष्पिते वने ।
मृगयां पर्याटष्यामि मात्रा पित्रा च संगतः ॥१३॥
13. kadāhaṃ punarāgamya sarayvāḥ puṣpite vane ,
mṛgayāṃ paryāṭaṣyāmi mātrā pitrā ca saṃgataḥ.
13. kadā aham punar āgamya sarayvāḥ puṣpite vane
mṛgayām paryāṭiṣyāmi mātrā pitrā ca saṅgataḥ
13. aham kadā punar sarayvāḥ puṣpite vane
mṛgayām mātrā pitrā ca saṅgataḥ paryāṭiṣyāmi
13. When will I return again to the blossoming forest along the Sarayu river and roam, hunting, accompanied by my mother and father?
नात्यर्थमभिकाङ्क्षामि मृगयां सरयूवने ।
रतिर्ह्येषातुला लोके राजर्षिगणसंमता ॥१४॥
14. nātyarthamabhikāṅkṣāmi mṛgayāṃ sarayūvane ,
ratirhyeṣātulā loke rājarṣigaṇasaṃmatā.
14. na atyartham abhikāṅkṣāmi mṛgayām sarayūvane
ratiḥ hi eṣā atulā loke rājarṣigaṇasaṁmatā
14. aham sarayūvane mṛgayām atyartham na abhikāṅkṣāmi
hi eṣā atulā ratiḥ loke rājarṣigaṇasaṁmatā
14. I do not greatly desire hunting in the Sarayu forest, for this activity, incomparable in the world, is truly esteemed by assemblies of royal sages.
स तमध्वानमैक्ष्वाकः सूतं मधुरया गिरा ।
तं तमर्थमभिप्रेत्य ययौवाक्यमुदीरयन् ॥१५॥
15. sa tamadhvānamaikṣvākaḥ sūtaṃ madhurayā girā ,
taṃ tamarthamabhipretya yayauvākyamudīrayan.
15. saḥ tam adhvānam aikṣvākaḥ sūtam madhurayā girā
tam tam artham abhipretya yayau vākyam udīrayan
15. saḥ aikṣvākaḥ tam adhvānam yayau sūtam madhurayā
girā tam tam artham abhipretya vākyam udīrayan
15. As he, the scion of Ikṣvāku, traveled that path, he spoke to the charioteer in a sweet voice, uttering words that conveyed various relevant meanings (artham), having those intentions in mind.
