श्रुत्वा वस्तु समग्रं तद्धर्मात्मा धर्मसंहितम् ।
व्यक्तमन्वेषते भूयो यद्वृत्तं तस्य धीमतः ॥१॥

1. Having heard that entire matter, which conformed to natural law (dharma), the righteous one (dharmātmā) then clearly sought further information about what had happened to that intelligent person.
उपस्पृश्योदकं संयन्मुनिः स्थित्वा कृताञ्जलिः ।
प्राचीनाग्रेषु दर्भेषु धर्मेणान्वेषते गतिम् ॥२॥
2. upaspṛśyodakaṃ saṃyanmuniḥ sthitvā kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
prācīnāgreṣu darbheṣu dharmeṇānveṣate gatim.

2. The self-controlled (saṃyan) sage (muni), having performed a ritual ablution, stood with folded hands (kṛtāñjaliḥ) on darbha grass with tips pointing east, and then investigates the path (gati) according to natural law (dharma).
जन्म रामस्य सुमहद्वीर्यं सर्वानुकूलताम् ।
लोकस्य प्रियतां क्षान्तिं सौम्यतां सत्यशीलताम् ॥३॥
3. janma rāmasya sumahadvīryaṃ sarvānukūlatām ,
lokasya priyatāṃ kṣāntiṃ saumyatāṃ satyaśīlatām.

3. (He considers) the birth of Rama, his very great valor, his kindness to all, his popularity among the people, his patience, gentleness, and adherence to truth.
नानाचित्राः कथाश्चान्या विश्वामित्रसहायने ।
जानक्याश्च विवाहं च धनुषश्च विभेदनम् ॥४॥
4. nānācitrāḥ kathāścānyā viśvāmitrasahāyane ,
jānakyāśca vivāhaṃ ca dhanuṣaśca vibhedanam.

4. And other diverse and fascinating stories from (Rama's time as) Viśvāmitra's companion, as well as Janaki's marriage, and the breaking of the bow.
रामरामविवादं च गुणान्दाशरथेस्तथा ।
तथाभिषेकं रामस्य कैकेय्या दुष्टभावताम् ॥५॥
5. rāmarāmavivādaṃ ca guṇāndāśarathestathā ,
tathābhiṣekaṃ rāmasya kaikeyyā duṣṭabhāvatām.

5. This (text describes) the dispute between (Paraśurāma and Rāma), and the qualities of Rāma, the son of Daśaratha. It also narrates Rāma's coronation and Kaikeyī's malicious intent.
व्याघातं चाभिषेकस्य रामस्य च विवासनम् ।
राज्ञः शोकविलापं च परलोकस्य चाश्रयम् ॥६॥
6. vyāghātaṃ cābhiṣekasya rāmasya ca vivāsanam ,
rājñaḥ śokavilāpaṃ ca paralokasya cāśrayam.

6. This (text describes) the obstruction of the coronation and the exile of Rāma, as well as the king's sorrowful lamentation and his departure to the other world (i.e., his death).
प्रकृतीनां विषादं च प्रकृतीनां विसर्जनम् ।
निषादाधिपसंवादं सूतोपावर्तनं तथा ॥७॥
7. prakṛtīnāṃ viṣādaṃ ca prakṛtīnāṃ visarjanam ,
niṣādādhipasaṃvādaṃ sūtopāvartanaṃ tathā.

7. This (text details) the sorrow (viṣāda) of the subjects (prakṛti) and their dismissal. It also covers the conversation with the chief of the Niṣādas, and the return of the charioteer (Sumantra).
गङ्गायाश्चापि संतारं भरद्वाजस्य दर्शनम् ।
भरद्वाजाभ्यनुज्ञानाच्चित्रकूटस्य दर्शनम् ॥८॥
8. gaṅgāyāścāpi saṃtāraṃ bharadvājasya darśanam ,
bharadvājābhyanujñānāccitrakūṭasya darśanam.

8. This (text describes) the crossing of the Gaṅgā, the meeting with Bharadvāja, and, by Bharadvāja's permission, the sight of Citrakūṭa.
वास्तुकर्मनिवेशं च भरतागमनं तथा ।
प्रसादनं च रामस्य पितुश्च सलिलक्रियाम् ॥९॥
9. vāstukarmaniveśaṃ ca bharatāgamanaṃ tathā ,
prasādanaṃ ca rāmasya pituśca salilakriyām.

पादुकाग्र्याभिषेकं च नन्दिग्राम निवासनम् ।
दण्डकारण्यगमनं सुतीक्ष्णेन समागमम् ॥१०॥
10. pādukāgryābhiṣekaṃ ca nandigrāma nivāsanam ,
daṇḍakāraṇyagamanaṃ sutīkṣṇena samāgamam.

अनसूयासमस्यां च अङ्गरागस्य चार्पणम् ।
शूर्पणख्याश्च संवादं विरूपकरणं तथा ॥११॥
11. anasūyāsamasyāṃ ca aṅgarāgasya cārpaṇam ,
śūrpaṇakhyāśca saṃvādaṃ virūpakaraṇaṃ tathā.

11. The discourse with Anasuya and the offering of the anointment, and the conversation with Shurpanakha and her disfigurement.

मारीचस्य वधं चैव वैदेह्या हरणं तथा ॥१२॥
12. vadhaṃ kharatriśirasorutthānaṃ rāvaṇasya ca ,
mārīcasya vadhaṃ caiva vaidehyā haraṇaṃ tathā.

12. The slaying of Khara and Trishiras, the provocation of Ravana, the slaying of Maricha, and the abduction of Vaidehi.
राघवस्य विलापं च गृध्रराजनिबर्हणम् ।
कबन्धदर्शनं चैव पम्पायाश्चापि दर्शनम् ॥१३॥
13. rāghavasya vilāpaṃ ca gṛdhrarājanibarhaṇam ,
kabandhadarśanaṃ caiva pampāyāścāpi darśanam.

13. It details Rama's lamentation, the slaying of the king of vultures, the sighting of Kabandha, and also the sighting of Lake Pampa.
शर्बर्या दर्शनं चैव हनूमद्दर्शनं तथा ।
विलापं चैव पम्पायां राघवस्य महात्मनः ॥१४॥
14. śarbaryā darśanaṃ caiva hanūmaddarśanaṃ tathā ,
vilāpaṃ caiva pampāyāṃ rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ.

14. It also describes the sighting of Shabari, the sighting of Hanuman, and indeed, the lamentation of the great-souled Rama (Raghava) by Lake Pampa.
ऋष्यमूकस्य गमनं सुग्रीवेण समागमम् ।
प्रत्ययोत्पादनं सख्यं वालिसुग्रीवविग्रहम् ॥१५॥
15. ṛṣyamūkasya gamanaṃ sugrīveṇa samāgamam ,
pratyayotpādanaṃ sakhyaṃ vālisugrīvavigraham.

15. It details the journey to Ṛṣyamūka mountain, the meeting with Sugriva, the establishment of trust, the alliance, and the conflict between Vali and Sugriva.
वालिप्रमथनं चैव सुग्रीवप्रतिपादनम् ।
ताराविलापसमयं वर्षरात्रिनिवासनम् ॥१६॥
16. vālipramathanaṃ caiva sugrīvapratipādanam ,
tārāvilāpasamayaṃ varṣarātrinivāsanam.

16. It includes the slaying of Vali, the reinstatement of Sugriva (to his kingdom), the time of Tara's lamentation, and the dwelling during the monsoon season.
कोपं राघवसिंहस्य बलानामुपसंग्रहम् ।
दिशः प्रस्थापनं चैव पृथिव्याश्च निवेदनम् ॥१७॥
17. kopaṃ rāghavasiṃhasya balānāmupasaṃgraham ,
diśaḥ prasthāpanaṃ caiva pṛthivyāśca nivedanam.

17. The anger of Rama, the lion-like hero; the gathering of forces; the dispatching (of messengers or armies) in all directions; and the report concerning the earth.
अङ्गुलीयकदानं च ऋक्षस्य बिलदर्शनम् ।
प्रायोपवेशनं चैव संपातेश्चापि दर्शनम् ॥१८॥
18. aṅgulīyakadānaṃ ca ṛkṣasya biladarśanam ,
prāyopaveśanaṃ caiva saṃpāteścāpi darśanam.

18. The giving of the ring; and the sighting of the cave (found by) the monkeys; the fast unto death (prāyopaveśanam); and also the sighting of Sampati.
पर्वतारोहणं चैव सागरस्य च लङ्घनम् ।
रात्रौ लङ्काप्रवेशं च एकस्यापि विचिन्तनम् ॥१९॥
19. parvatārohaṇaṃ caiva sāgarasya ca laṅghanam ,
rātrau laṅkāpraveśaṃ ca ekasyāpi vicintanam.

19. The ascent of the mountain; and indeed, the crossing of the ocean; the entry into Lanka at night; and the solitary contemplation.
आपानभूमिगमनमवरोधस्य दर्शनम् ।
अशोकवनिकायानं सीतायाश्चापि दर्शनम् ॥२०॥
20. āpānabhūmigamanamavarodhasya darśanam ,
aśokavanikāyānaṃ sītāyāścāpi darśanam.

20. The visit to the drinking hall; the sighting of the inner royal chambers (avarodha); the journey to the Ashoka grove; and also the sighting of Sita.

राक्षसीतर्जनं चैव त्रिजटास्वप्नदर्शनम् ॥२१॥
21. abhijñānapradānaṃ ca sītāyāścāpi bhāṣaṇam ,
rākṣasītarjanaṃ caiva trijaṭāsvapnadarśanam.

21. The delivery of the recognition token, Sita's speech, the intimidation of the ogresses, and Trijata's dream vision.
मणिप्रदानं सीताया वृक्षभङ्गं तथैव च ।
राक्षसीविद्रवं चैव किंकराणां निबर्हणम् ॥२२॥
22. maṇipradānaṃ sītāyā vṛkṣabhaṅgaṃ tathaiva ca ,
rākṣasīvidravaṃ caiva kiṃkarāṇāṃ nibarhaṇam.

प्रतिप्लवनमेवाथ मधूनां हरणं तथा ॥२३॥
23. grahaṇaṃ vāyusūnośca laṅkādāhābhigarjanam ,
pratiplavanamevātha madhūnāṃ haraṇaṃ tathā.

23. The capture of the son of Vayu (Hanuman), the roaring accompanying the burning of Lanka, his return flight, and the destruction of the honeycombs.
राघवाश्वासनं चैव मणिनिर्यातनं तथा ।
संगमं च समुद्रस्य नलसेतोश्च बन्धनम् ॥२४॥
24. rāghavāśvāsanaṃ caiva maṇiniryātanaṃ tathā ,
saṃgamaṃ ca samudrasya nalasetośca bandhanam.

विभीषणेन संसर्गं वधोपायनिवेदनम् ॥२५॥
25. pratāraṃ ca samudrasya rātrau laṅkāvarodhanam ,
vibhīṣaṇena saṃsargaṃ vadhopāyanivedanam.

रावणस्य विनाशं च सीतावाप्तिमरेः पुरे ॥२६॥
26. kumbhakarṇasya nidhanaṃ meghanādanibarhaṇam ,
rāvaṇasya vināśaṃ ca sītāvāptimareḥ pure.

अयोध्यायाश्च गमनं भरतेन समागमम् ॥२७॥
27. bibhīṣaṇābhiṣekaṃ ca puṣpakasya ca darśanam ,
ayodhyāyāśca gamanaṃ bharatena samāgamam.

27. And the coronation of Vibhishana, the sight of the Pushpaka (chariot), the journey to Ayodhya, and the meeting with Bharata.

स्वराष्ट्ररञ्जनं चैव वैदेह्याश्च विसर्जनम् ॥२८॥
28. rāmābhiṣekābhyudayaṃ sarvasainyavisarjanam ,
svarāṣṭrarañjanaṃ caiva vaidehyāśca visarjanam.

28. The auspicious coronation of Rama, the dismissal of all armies, the pleasing of his own kingdom, and the relinquishment of Vaidehi (Sita).
अनागतं च यत् किं चिद् रामस्य वसुधातले ।
तच्चकारोत्तरे काव्ये वाल्मीकिर्भगवानृषिः ॥२९॥
29. anāgataṃ ca yat kiṃ cid rāmasya vasudhātale ,
taccakārottare kāvye vālmīkirbhagavānṛṣiḥ.
29. anāgatam ca yat kim cit rāmasya vasudhātale
tat cakāra uttare kāvye vālmīkiḥ bhagavān ṛṣiḥ
29. vālmīkiḥ bhagavān ṛṣiḥ tat ca anāgatam yat kim

29. And whatever future events (anāgatam) concerning Rama would occur on earth, the venerable sage Valmiki composed that in the later part of his epic.
