ततः स कपिशार्दूलस्तेन वाक्येन हर्षितः ।
सीतामुवाच तच्छ्रुत्वा वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः ॥१॥
1. tataḥ sa kapiśārdūlastena vākyena harṣitaḥ ,
sītāmuvāca tacchrutvā vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ.

1. Then, that best among monkeys, an expert in speech, gladdened by those words, having heard them, spoke to Sītā.

सदृशं स्त्रीस्वभावस्य साध्वीनां विनयस्य च ॥२॥
2. yuktarūpaṃ tvayā devi bhāṣitaṃ śubhadarśane ,
sadṛśaṃ strīsvabhāvasya sādhvīnāṃ vinayasya ca.
2. yuktarūpam tvayā devi bhāṣitam śubhadarśane
sadṛśam strīsvabhāvasya sādhvīnām vinayasya ca

2. O Goddess, O beautiful one, what you have spoken is truly appropriate. It is fitting for the natural disposition of women and for the modesty of virtuous ladies.
स्त्रीत्वं न तु समर्थं हि सागरं व्यतिवर्तितुम् ।
मामधिष्ठाय विस्तीर्णं शतयोजनमायतम् ॥३॥
3. strītvaṃ na tu samarthaṃ hi sāgaraṃ vyativartitum ,
māmadhiṣṭhāya vistīrṇaṃ śatayojanamāyatam.
3. strītvam na tu samartham hi sāgaram vyativartitum
mām adhiṣṭhāya vistīrṇam śatayojanam āyatam
3. hi tu strītvam mām adhiṣṭhāya vistīrṇam śatayojanam

3. Indeed, for a woman, it is not possible to cross the ocean, which is vast and extends a hundred yojanas, even by relying upon me.
द्वितीयं कारणं यच्च ब्रवीषि विनयान्विते ।
रामादन्यस्य नार्हामि संस्पर्शमिति जानकि ॥४॥
4. dvitīyaṃ kāraṇaṃ yacca bravīṣi vinayānvite ,
rāmādanyasya nārhāmi saṃsparśamiti jānaki.
4. dvitīyam kāraṇam yat ca bravīṣi vinayānvite
rāmāt anyasya na arhāmi saṃsparśam iti jānakī
4. jānakī vinayānvite ca yat dvitīyam kāraṇam
bravīṣi rāmāt anyasya saṃsparśam na arhāmi iti
4. And Janaki, concerning the second reason you mention, being endowed with humility, I am not worthy of the touch of anyone other than Rama.
एतत्ते देवि सदृशं पत्न्यास्तस्य महात्मनः ।
का ह्यन्या त्वामृते देवि ब्रूयाद्वचनमीदृशम् ॥५॥
5. etatte devi sadṛśaṃ patnyāstasya mahātmanaḥ ,
kā hyanyā tvāmṛte devi brūyādvacanamīdṛśam.
5. etat te devi sadṛśam patnyāḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ
kā hi anyā tvām ṛte devi brūyāt vacanam īdṛśam
5. devi etat tasya mahātmanaḥ patnyāḥ te sadṛśam
hi devi tvām ṛte kā anyā īdṛśam vacanam brūyāt
5. O goddess, this is indeed fitting for you, the wife of that great soul. For what other woman, O goddess, besides you, could utter such words?
श्रोष्यते चैव काकुत्स्थः सर्वं निरवशेषतः ।
चेष्टितं यत्त्वया देवि भाषितं मम चाग्रतः ॥६॥
6. śroṣyate caiva kākutsthaḥ sarvaṃ niravaśeṣataḥ ,
ceṣṭitaṃ yattvayā devi bhāṣitaṃ mama cāgrataḥ.
6. śroṣyate ca eva kākutsthaḥ sarvam niravaśeṣataḥ
ceṣṭitam yat tvayā devi bhāṣitam mama ca agrataḥ
6. ca eva kākutsthaḥ sarvam niravaśeṣataḥ śroṣyate
yat tvayā devi ceṣṭitam ca mama agrataḥ bhāṣitam
6. And Kakutstha (Rama) will certainly hear everything completely – whatever action was done by you, O goddess, and whatever was said in front of me.
कारणैर्बहुभिर्देवि राम प्रियचिकीर्षया ।
स्नेहप्रस्कन्नमनसा मयैतत् समुदीरितम् ॥७॥
7. kāraṇairbahubhirdevi rāma priyacikīrṣayā ,
snehapraskannamanasā mayaitat samudīritam.
7. kāraṇaiḥ bahubhiḥ devi rāmapriyacikīrṣayā
sneha-praskanna-manasā mayā etat sam-udīritam

7. O goddess, this has been uttered by me, with a heart overflowing with affection, for many reasons, and out of a desire to please Rama.
लङ्काया दुष्प्रवेशत्वाद्दुस्तरत्वान्महोदधेः ।
सामर्थ्यादात्मनश्चैव मयैतत् समुदाहृतम् ॥८॥
8. laṅkāyā duṣpraveśatvāddustaratvānmahodadheḥ ,
sāmarthyādātmanaścaiva mayaitat samudāhṛtam.
8. laṅkāyāḥ duṣpraveśatvāt dustaratvāt mahodadheḥ
sāmarthyāt ātmanaḥ ca eva mayā etat samudāhṛtam
8. mayā etat samudāhṛtam laṅkāyāḥ duṣpraveśatvāt
mahodadheḥ dustaratvāt ātmanaḥ ca eva sāmarthyāt
8. I have stated this because of Lanka's inaccessibility, the great ocean's immense difficulty to cross, and indeed, my own ability.
इच्छामि त्वां समानेतुमद्यैव रघुबन्धुना ।
गुरुस्नेहेन भक्त्या च नान्यथा तदुदाहृतम् ॥९॥
9. icchāmi tvāṃ samānetumadyaiva raghubandhunā ,
gurusnehena bhaktyā ca nānyathā tadudāhṛtam.
9. icchāmi tvām samānetum adya eva raghubandhunā
gurusnehena bhaktyā ca na anyathā tat udāhṛtam
9. icchāmi tvām samānetum adya eva raghubandhunā
tat udāhṛtam gurusnehena bhaktyā ca na anyathā
9. I wish to bring you to the kinsman of Raghu today itself. This statement is made purely out of profound affection and devotion (bhakti), and not for any other reason.
यदि नोत्सहसे यातुं मया सार्धमनिन्दिते ।
अभिज्ञानं प्रयच्छ त्वं जानीयाद् राघवो हि यत् ॥१०॥
10. yadi notsahase yātuṃ mayā sārdhamanindite ,
abhijñānaṃ prayaccha tvaṃ jānīyād rāghavo hi yat.
10. yadi na utsahase yātum mayā sārdham anindite
abhijñānam prayaccha tvam jānīyāt rāghavaḥ hi yat
10. anindite yadi mayā sārdham yātum na utsahase tvam
abhijñānam prayaccha yat rāghavaḥ hi jānīyāt
10. O blameless one, if you are unable to come with me, then give a token of recognition so that Rāma may indeed know (of my visit and your plight).
एवमुक्ता हनुमता सीता सुरसुतोपमा ।
उवाच वचनं मन्दं बाष्पप्रग्रथिताक्षरम् ॥११॥
11. evamuktā hanumatā sītā surasutopamā ,
uvāca vacanaṃ mandaṃ bāṣpapragrathitākṣaram.

vacanam mandam bāṣpapragrathitākṣaram
11. hanumatā evam uktā surasutopamā sītā

11. Having been addressed thus by Hanumān, Sītā, who resembled a divine maiden, spoke slow words, her syllables choked with tears.
इदं श्रेष्ठमभिज्ञानं ब्रूयास्त्वं तु मम प्रियम् ।
शैलस्य चित्रकूटस्य पादे पूर्वोत्तरे तदा ॥१२॥
12. idaṃ śreṣṭhamabhijñānaṃ brūyāstvaṃ tu mama priyam ,
śailasya citrakūṭasya pāde pūrvottare tadā.
12. idam śreṣṭham abhijñānam brūyāḥ tvam tu mama
priyam śailasya citrakūṭasya pāde pūrvottare tadā
12. You (Hanumān) should indeed tell my beloved (Rāma) this excellent sign (of recognition). At that time, at the northeastern foot of the Citrakūṭa mountain...
तापसाश्रमवासिन्याः प्राज्यमूलफलोदके ।
तस्मिन् सिद्धाश्रमे देशे मन्दाकिन्या अदूरतः ॥१३॥
13. tāpasāśramavāsinyāḥ prājyamūlaphalodake ,
tasmin siddhāśrame deśe mandākinyā adūrataḥ.
13. tāpasāśramavāsīnyāḥ prājyamūlaphalodake
tasmin siddhāśrame deśe mandākinyāḥ adūrataḥ
13. In that region, that hermitage (āśrama) of perfected beings (siddhas), rich with abundant roots, fruits, and water, where she (Sītā) resided in an ascetic's dwelling (tāpasāśrama), not far from the Mandākinī river.
तस्योपवनषण्डेषु नानापुष्पसुगन्धिषु ।
विहृत्य सलिलक्लिन्ना तवाङ्के समुपाविशम् ॥१४॥
14. tasyopavanaṣaṇḍeṣu nānāpuṣpasugandhiṣu ,
vihṛtya salilaklinnā tavāṅke samupāviśam.
14. tasya upavanaṣaṇḍeṣu nānāpuṣpasugandhiṣu
vihṛtya salilaklinnā tava aṅke samupāviśam
14. Having strolled in its (the hermitage's) groves and thickets, fragrant with various flowers, I, wet from the water, sat down in your lap.
पर्यायेण प्रसुप्तश्च
ममाङ्के भरताग्रजः ॥१५॥
15. paryāyeṇa prasuptaśca
mamāṅke bharatāgrajaḥ.

15. And then, the elder brother of Bharata (Rāma) in turn fell asleep in my lap.
ततो मांससमायुक्तो वायसः पर्यतुण्डयत् ।
तमहं लोष्टमुद्यम्य वारयामि स्म वायसं ॥१६॥
16. tato māṃsasamāyukto vāyasaḥ paryatuṇḍayat ,
tamahaṃ loṣṭamudyamya vārayāmi sma vāyasaṃ.
16. tataḥ māṃsa-samāyuktaḥ vāyasaḥ paryatuṇḍayat
tam aham loṣṭam udyamya vārayāmi sma vāyasam
16. tataḥ māṃsa-samāyuktaḥ vāyasaḥ paryatuṇḍayat
aham loṣṭam udyamya tam vāyasam vārayāmi sma
16. Then a crow, having obtained some meat, began to peck at it. I, lifting a clod of earth, attempted to ward off that crow.
दारयन् स च मां काकस्तत्रैव परिलीयते ।
न चाप्युपरमन्मांसाद्भक्षार्थी बलिभोजनः ॥१७॥
17. dārayan sa ca māṃ kākastatraiva parilīyate ,
na cāpyuparamanmāṃsādbhakṣārthī balibhojanaḥ.
17. dārayan saḥ ca mām kākaḥ tatra eva parilīyate na
ca api uparaman māṃsāt bhakṣa-arthī bali-bhojanaḥ
17. saḥ kākaḥ ca mām dārayan tatra eva parilīyate ca
bhakṣa-arthī bali-bhojanaḥ māṃsāt na api uparaman
17. And that crow, wounding me, persistently hovered there. The eater of offerings (the crow), desirous of food, also did not desist from the meat.
उत्कर्षन्त्यां च रशनां क्रुद्धायां मयि पक्षिणे ।
स्रंसमाने च वसने ततो दृष्टा त्वया ह्यहम् ॥१८॥
18. utkarṣantyāṃ ca raśanāṃ kruddhāyāṃ mayi pakṣiṇe ,
sraṃsamāne ca vasane tato dṛṣṭā tvayā hyaham.
18. utkarṣantyām ca raśanām kruddhāyām mayi pakṣiṇe
sraṃsamāne ca vasane tataḥ dṛṣṭā tvayā hi aham
18. raśanām utkarṣantyām ca mayi pakṣiṇe kruddhāyām
ca vasane sraṃsamāne tataḥ hi aham tvayā dṛṣṭā
18. While I was pulling up my garment, angry at the bird, and as my upper garment was slipping, at that moment I was indeed seen by you.
त्वया विहसिता चाहं क्रुद्धा संलज्जिता तदा ।
भक्ष्य गृद्धेन कालेन दारिता त्वामुपागता ॥१९॥
19. tvayā vihasitā cāhaṃ kruddhā saṃlajjitā tadā ,
bhakṣya gṛddhena kālena dāritā tvāmupāgatā.
19. tvayā vihasitā ca aham kruddhā saṃlajjitā tadā
bhakṣya-gṛddhena kālena dāritā tvām upāgatā
19. tadā tvayā ca aham kruddhā saṃlajjitā vihasitā
bhakṣya-gṛddhena kālena dāritā tvām upāgatā
19. Then I was laughed at by you, angry and ashamed. Wounded by the crow, which was like greedy time (kāla), I approached you.
आसीनस्य च ते श्रान्ता पुनरुत्सङ्गमाविशम् ।
क्रुध्यन्ती च प्रहृष्टेन त्वयाहं परिसान्त्विता ॥२०॥
20. āsīnasya ca te śrāntā punarutsaṅgamāviśam ,
krudhyantī ca prahṛṣṭena tvayāhaṃ parisāntvitā.
20. āsīnasya ca te śrāntā punaḥ utsaṅgam āviśam
krudhyantī ca prahr̥ṣṭena tvayā aham parisantvitā
20. āsīnasya te śrāntā aham punaḥ utsaṅgam āviśam ca
krudhyantī aham prahr̥ṣṭena tvayā parisantvitā
20. As you sat there, I, tired, again settled into your lap. And though I was angry, you, being delighted, completely consoled me.
बाष्पपूर्णमुखी मन्दं चक्षुषी परिमार्जती ।
लक्षिताहं त्वया नाथ वायसेन प्रकोपिता ॥२१॥
21. bāṣpapūrṇamukhī mandaṃ cakṣuṣī parimārjatī ,
lakṣitāhaṃ tvayā nātha vāyasena prakopitā.
21. bāṣpapurṇamukhī mandam cakṣuṣī parimārjatī
lakṣitā aham tvayā nātha vāyasena prakopitā
21. aham bāṣpapurṇamukhī mandam cakṣuṣī parimārjatī

21. With a face full of tears, slowly wiping my eyes, I, provoked by a crow, was noticed by you, O lord.
आशीविष इव क्रुद्धः श्वसान् वाक्यमभाषथाः ।
केन ते नागनासोरु विक्षतं वै स्तनान्तरम् ।
कः क्रीडति सरोषेण पञ्चवक्त्रेण भोगिना ॥२२॥
22. āśīviṣa iva kruddhaḥ śvasān vākyamabhāṣathāḥ ,
kena te nāganāsoru vikṣataṃ vai stanāntaram ,
kaḥ krīḍati saroṣeṇa pañcavaktreṇa bhoginā.
22. āśīviṣaḥ iva kruddhaḥ śvasān vākyam
abhāṣathāḥ kena te nāganāsoru
vikṣatam vai stanāntaram kaḥ krīḍati
saroṣeṇa pañcavaktreṇa bhoginā

22. Like an angry, hissing venomous snake, you spoke. 'By whom, O lady with beautiful thighs, has the space between your breasts been wounded? Who would dare to play with a furious, five-headed serpent?'
वीक्षमाणस्ततस्तं वै वायसं समवैक्षथाः ।
नखैः सरुधिरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्मामेवाभिमुखं स्थितम् ॥२३॥
23. vīkṣamāṇastatastaṃ vai vāyasaṃ samavaikṣathāḥ ,
nakhaiḥ sarudhiraistīkṣṇairmāmevābhimukhaṃ sthitam.
23. vīkṣamāṇaḥ tataḥ tam vai vāyasam samavaikṣathāḥ
nakhaiḥ sarudhiraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ mām eva abhimukham sthitam
23. tataḥ vīkṣamāṇaḥ tam vai vāyasam mām eva abhimukham
tīkṣṇaiḥ sarudhiraiḥ nakhaiḥ sthitam samavaikṣathāḥ
23. Then, looking intently, you indeed perceived that crow which was standing facing me, its sharp claws covered in blood.
पुत्रः किल स शक्रस्य वायसः पततां वरः ।
धरान्तरचरः शीघ्रं पवनस्य गतौ समः ॥२४॥
24. putraḥ kila sa śakrasya vāyasaḥ patatāṃ varaḥ ,
dharāntaracaraḥ śīghraṃ pavanasya gatau samaḥ.
24. putraḥ kila sa śakrasya vāyasaḥ patatām varaḥ
dharāntaracaraḥ śīghram pavanasya gatau samaḥ
24. sa kila śakrasya putraḥ patatām varaḥ
dharāntaracaraḥ pavanasya gatau śīghram samaḥ
24. He was indeed the son of Indra (Śakra), the foremost among birds. He moved swiftly across the earth, matching the speed of the wind.
ततस्तस्मिन्महाबाहुः कोपसंवर्तितेक्षणः ।
वायसे कृतवान् क्रूरां मतिं मतिमतां वर ॥२५॥
25. tatastasminmahābāhuḥ kopasaṃvartitekṣaṇaḥ ,
vāyase kṛtavān krūrāṃ matiṃ matimatāṃ vara.
25. tataḥ tasmin mahābāhuḥ kopasaṃvartitekṣaṇaḥ
vāyase kṛtavān krūrām matim matimatām vara
25. tataḥ mahābāhuḥ matimatām varaḥ kopasaṃvartitekṣaṇaḥ
tasmin vāyase krūrām matim kṛtavān
25. Then, the mighty-armed (Rāma), with eyes contracted in anger, formed a cruel resolve concerning that crow, he who was the foremost among the wise.
स दर्भसंस्तराद्गृह्य ब्रह्मणो ऽस्त्रेण योजयः ।
स दीप्त इव कालाग्निर्जज्वालाभिमुखो द्विजम् ॥२६॥
26. sa darbhasaṃstarādgṛhya brahmaṇo'streṇa yojayaḥ ,
sa dīpta iva kālāgnirjajvālābhimukho dvijam.
26. sa darbhasaṃstarāt gṛhya brahmaṇaḥ astreṇa yojayaḥ
sa dīptaḥ iva kālāgniḥ jajjvāla abhimukhaḥ dvijam
26. sa darbhasaṃstarāt gṛhya brahmaṇaḥ astreṇa yojayaḥ
sa dīptaḥ kālāgniḥ iva dvijam abhimukhaḥ jajjvāla
26. He, taking (a blade of grass) from the kusa grass mat, imbued it with the divine weapon (astra) of Brahmā. Like the blazing fire of universal destruction (kālāgni), he ignited, facing the bird (dvija).
चिक्षेपिथ प्रदीप्तां तामिषीकां वायसं प्रति ।
अनुसृष्टस्तदा कालो जगाम विविधां गतिम् ।
त्राणकाम इमं लोकं सर्वं वै विचचार ह ॥२७॥
27. cikṣepitha pradīptāṃ tāmiṣīkāṃ vāyasaṃ prati ,
anusṛṣṭastadā kālo jagāma vividhāṃ gatim ,
trāṇakāma imaṃ lokaṃ sarvaṃ vai vicacāra ha.
27. cikṣepitha pradīptām tām iṣīkām
vāyasam prati anusṛṣṭaḥ tadā kālaḥ
jagāma vividhām gatim trāṇakāmaḥ
imam lokam sarvam vai vicacāra ha
27. pradīptām tām iṣīkām vāyasam prati
cikṣepitha tadā anusṛṣṭaḥ kālaḥ
vividhām gatim jagāma trāṇakāmaḥ
sarvam imam lokam vai vicacāra ha
27. Then, you (Rāma) hurled that blazing blade of grass towards the crow. Once released, that agent of death (kāla) pursued it, taking various forms. Desiring protection, (the crow) indeed wandered throughout this entire world.
स पित्रा च परित्यक्तः सुरैः सर्वैर्महर्षिभिः ।
त्रींल् लोकान् संपरिक्रम्य त्वामेव शरणं गतः ॥२८॥
28. sa pitrā ca parityaktaḥ suraiḥ sarvairmaharṣibhiḥ ,
trīṃl lokān saṃparikramya tvāmeva śaraṇaṃ gataḥ.
28. saḥ pitrā ca parityaktaḥ suraiḥ sarvaiḥ maharṣibhiḥ
trīn lokān saṃparikramya tvām eva śaraṇam gataḥ
28. saḥ pitrā sarvaiḥ suraiḥ maharṣibhiḥ ca parityaktaḥ
trīn lokān saṃparikramya tvām eva śaraṇam gataḥ
28. Abandoned by his father, and by all the gods and great sages, he roamed through the three worlds and then came to you alone for refuge.
तं त्वं निपतितं भूमौ शरण्यः शरणागतम् ।
वधार्हमपि काकुत्स्थ कृपया पर्यपालयः ।
न शर्म लब्ध्वा लोकेषु त्वामेव शरणं गतः ॥२९॥
29. taṃ tvaṃ nipatitaṃ bhūmau śaraṇyaḥ śaraṇāgatam ,
vadhārhamapi kākutstha kṛpayā paryapālayaḥ ,
na śarma labdhvā lokeṣu tvāmeva śaraṇaṃ gataḥ.
29. tam tvam nipatitam bhūmau śaraṇyaḥ
śaraṇāgatam vadhārham api kākutstha
kṛpayā paryapālayaḥ na śarma
labdhvā lokeṣu tvām eva śaraṇam gataḥ
29. he kākutstha! tvam śaraṇyaḥ tam bhūmau
nipatitam śaraṇāgatam vadhārham
api kṛpayā paryapālayaḥ saḥ lokeṣu
śarma na labdhvā tvām eva śaraṇam gataḥ
29. O Kakutstha, you, the protector, out of compassion, protected him even though he deserved death, when he fell to the ground and sought your refuge. Not having found peace in any of the worlds, he came to you alone for shelter.
परिद्यूनं विषण्णं च स त्वमायान्तमुक्तवान् ।
मोघं कर्तुं न शक्यं तु ब्राह्ममस्त्रं तदुच्यताम् ॥३०॥
30. paridyūnaṃ viṣaṇṇaṃ ca sa tvamāyāntamuktavān ,
moghaṃ kartuṃ na śakyaṃ tu brāhmamastraṃ taducyatām.
30. paridyūnam viṣaṇṇam ca saḥ tvām āyāntam uktavān
mogham kartum na śakyam tu brāhmam astram tat ucyatām
30. saḥ paridyūnam viṣaṇṇam ca āyāntam tvām uktavān brāhmam astram tu mogham kartum na śakyam,
tat ucyatām
30. He (Jayanta) said to you (Rama), who were approaching, emaciated and dejected: 'The divine weapon (brahmāstra) cannot be rendered useless; therefore, let it be employed.'
ततस्तस्याक्षि काकस्य
हिनस्ति स्म स दक्षिणम् ॥३१॥
31. tatastasyākṣi kākasya

31. Then he (Rama) injured the right eye of that crow.
स ते तदा नमस्कृत्वा राज्ञे दशरथाय च ।
त्वया वीर विसृष्टस्तु प्रतिपेदे स्वमालयम् ॥३२॥
32. sa te tadā namaskṛtvā rājñe daśarathāya ca ,
tvayā vīra visṛṣṭastu pratipede svamālayam.
32. saḥ te tadā namaskṛtvā rājñe daśarathāya ca
tvayā vīra visṛṣṭaḥ tu pratipede svam ālayam
32. He then, having paid homage to you and to King Daśaratha, O hero, when dismissed by you, returned to his own abode.
मत्कृते काकमात्रे ऽपि ब्रह्मास्त्रं समुदीरितम् ।
कस्माद् यो मां हरत्त्वत्तः क्षमसे तं महीपते ॥३३॥
33. matkṛte kākamātre'pi brahmāstraṃ samudīritam ,
kasmād yo māṃ harattvattaḥ kṣamase taṃ mahīpate.
33. matkṛte kākamātre api brahmāstram samudīritam
kasmāt yaḥ mām harat tvattaḥ kṣamase tam mahīpate
33. For my sake, even against a mere crow, the brahmāstra (divine weapon) was invoked. O lord of the earth, why do you forgive him who snatched me from you?
स कुरुष्व महोत्साहं कृपां मयि नरर्षभ ।
आनृशंस्यं परो धर्मस्त्वत्त एव मया श्रुतः ॥३४॥
34. sa kuruṣva mahotsāhaṃ kṛpāṃ mayi nararṣabha ,
ānṛśaṃsyaṃ paro dharmastvatta eva mayā śrutaḥ.
34. sa kuruṣva mahotsāham kṛpām mayi nararṣabha
ānṛśaṃsyam paraḥ dharmaḥ tvattaḥ eva mayā śrutaḥ
34. Therefore, O best among men, show great enthusiasm and compassion towards me. Non-cruelty is the supreme natural law (dharma); this I have heard from you yourself.
जानामि त्वां महावीर्यं महोत्साहं महाबलम् ।
अपारपारमक्षोभ्यं गाम्भीर्यात् सागरोपमम् ।
भर्तारं ससमुद्राया धरण्या वासवोपमम् ॥३५॥
35. jānāmi tvāṃ mahāvīryaṃ mahotsāhaṃ mahābalam ,
apārapāramakṣobhyaṃ gāmbhīryāt sāgaropamam ,
bhartāraṃ sasamudrāyā dharaṇyā vāsavopamam.
35. jānāmi tvām mahāvīryam mahotsāham
mahābalam apāraparam akṣobhyam
gāmbhīryāt sāgaropamam bhartāram
sasamudrāyā dharaṇyā vāsavopamam
35. I know you to be of great valor, great enthusiasm, and great strength; one whose shores are boundless, unshakeable, and in profundity comparable to the ocean. I know you as the maintainer of the earth with its oceans, and comparable to Vāsava (Indra).
एवमस्त्रविदां श्रेष्ठः सत्त्ववान्बलवानपि ।
किमर्थमस्त्रं रक्षःसु न योजयसि राघव ॥३६॥
36. evamastravidāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ sattvavānbalavānapi ,
kimarthamastraṃ rakṣaḥsu na yojayasi rāghava.
36. evam astravidām śreṣṭhaḥ sattvavān balavān api
kimartham astram rakṣaḥsu na yojayasi rāghava
36. rāghava evam astravidām śreṣṭhaḥ sattvavān
balavān api kimartham astram rakṣaḥsu na yojayasi
36. O Rāghava, even though you are the foremost among those who know the use of weapons, and are endowed with courage and power, why do you not employ your weapons against the Rākṣasas?
न नागा नापि गन्धर्वा नासुरा न मरुद्गणाः ।
रामस्य समरे वेगं शक्ताः प्रति समाधितुम् ॥३७॥
37. na nāgā nāpi gandharvā nāsurā na marudgaṇāḥ ,
rāmasya samare vegaṃ śaktāḥ prati samādhitum.
37. na nāgāḥ na api gandharvāḥ na asurāḥ na marudgaṇāḥ
rāmasya samare vegam śaktāḥ prati samādhitum
37. na nāgāḥ na api gandharvāḥ na asurāḥ na marudgaṇāḥ
rāmasya samare vegam prati samādhitum śaktāḥ
37. Neither the Nāgas, nor the Gandharvas, nor the Asuras, nor even the hosts of Maruts are capable of matching Rāma's irresistible force in battle.
तस्या वीर्यवतः कश्चिद् यद्यस्ति मयि संभ्रमः ।
किमर्थं न शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः क्षयं नयति राक्षसान् ॥३८॥
38. tasyā vīryavataḥ kaścid yadyasti mayi saṃbhramaḥ ,
kimarthaṃ na śaraistīkṣṇaiḥ kṣayaṃ nayati rākṣasān.
38. tasya vīryavataḥ kaścit yadi asti mayi saṃbhramaḥ
kimartham na śaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ kṣayam nayati rākṣasān
38. yadi tasya vīryavataḥ kaścit saṃbhramaḥ mayi asti,
kimartham śaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ rākṣasān kṣayam na nayati
38. If that valorous (vīryavat) one has any concern for me, why does he not bring the Rākṣasas to their end with his sharp arrows?
भ्रातुरादेशमादाय लक्ष्मणो वा परंतपः ।
कस्य हेतोर्न मां वीरः परित्राति महाबलः ॥३९॥
39. bhrāturādeśamādāya lakṣmaṇo vā paraṃtapaḥ ,
kasya hetorna māṃ vīraḥ paritrāti mahābalaḥ.
39. bhrātuḥ ādeśam ādāya lakṣmaṇaḥ vā paraṃtapaḥ
kasya hetoḥ na mām vīraḥ paritrāti mahābalaḥ
39. vā bhrātuḥ ādeśam ādāya,
lakṣmaṇaḥ paraṃtapaḥ mahābalaḥ vīraḥ kasya hetoḥ mām na paritrāti
39. Or, having taken his brother's command, why does the mighty hero Lakṣmaṇa, the tormentor of foes, not protect me?
यदि तौ पुरुषव्याघ्रौ वाय्विन्द्रसमतेजसौ ।
सुराणामपि दुर्धर्षो किमर्थं मामुपेक्षतः ॥४०॥
40. yadi tau puruṣavyāghrau vāyvindrasamatejasau ,
surāṇāmapi durdharṣo kimarthaṃ māmupekṣataḥ.
40. yadi tau puruṣavyāghrau vāyvindrasamatejasau
surāṇām api durdharṣau kimartham mām upekṣataḥ
40. yadi puruṣavyāghrau vāyvindrasamatejasau surāṇām

40. If those two, the foremost among men (puruṣavyāghrau), whose prowess is equal to Vayu and Indra, are invincible even to the gods, then why do they neglect me?
ममैव दुष्कृतं किं चिन्महदस्ति न संशयः ।
समर्थावपि तौ यन्मां नावेक्षेते परंतपौ ॥४१॥
41. mamaiva duṣkṛtaṃ kiṃ cinmahadasti na saṃśayaḥ ,
samarthāvapi tau yanmāṃ nāvekṣete paraṃtapau.
41. mama eva duṣkṛtam kim cit mahat asti na saṃśayaḥ
samarthau api tau yat mām na avekṣete paraṃtapau
41. mama eva kim cit mahat duṣkṛtam asti,
na saṃśayaḥ; yat samarthau paraṃtapau api tau mām na avekṣete
41. Indeed, some great misdeed (duṣkṛtam) of mine certainly exists; there is no doubt. For though those two capable ones, the tormentors of enemies (paraṃtapau), do not regard me.
कौसल्या लोकभर्तारं सुषुवे यं मनस्विनी ।
तं ममार्थे सुखं पृच्छ शिरसा चाभिवादय ॥४२॥
42. kausalyā lokabhartāraṃ suṣuve yaṃ manasvinī ,
taṃ mamārthe sukhaṃ pṛccha śirasā cābhivādaya.
42. kausalyā lokabhartāram suṣuve yam manasvinī tam
mama arthe sukham pṛccha śirasā ca abhivādaya
42. manasvinī kausalyā yam lokabhartāram suṣuve,

42. The high-minded Kausalya gave birth to him, the protector of the world (lokabhartāram). On my behalf, inquire about his welfare and salute him with your head bowed.
स्रजश्च सर्वरत्नानि प्रिया याश्च वराङ्गनाः ।
ऐश्वर्यं च विशालायां पृथिव्यामपि दुर्लभम् ॥४३॥
43. srajaśca sarvaratnāni priyā yāśca varāṅganāḥ ,
aiśvaryaṃ ca viśālāyāṃ pṛthivyāmapi durlabham.
43. srajaḥ ca sarvaratnāni priyāḥ yāḥ ca varāṅganāḥ
aiśvaryam ca viśālāyām pṛthivyām api durlabham
43. srajaḥ ca sarvaratnāni,

43. Garlands, all kinds of jewels, and beloved excellent women; also, sovereignty, which is rare even on the vast earth – all these are hard to acquire.
पितरं मातरं चैव संमान्याभिप्रसाद्य च ।
अनुप्रव्रजितो रामं सुमित्रा येन सुप्रजाः ।
आनुकूल्येन धर्मात्मा त्यक्त्वा सुखमनुत्तमम् ॥४४॥
44. pitaraṃ mātaraṃ caiva saṃmānyābhiprasādya ca ,
anupravrajito rāmaṃ sumitrā yena suprajāḥ ,
ānukūlyena dharmātmā tyaktvā sukhamanuttamam.
44. pitaram mātaram ca eva saṃmānya
abhiprasādya ca anupravrajitaḥ rāmam
sumitrā yena suprajāḥ ānukūlyena
dharmātmā tyaktvā sukham anuttamam

44. Having honored and duly propitiated his father and mother, and having followed Rama into exile - by him, Sumitra is truly blessed with an excellent son. That righteous soul (dharmātmā), abandoning unequalled happiness, acts with utmost devotion.
अनुगच्छति काकुत्स्थं भ्रातरं पालयन् वने ।
सिंहस्कन्धो महाबाहुर्मनस्वी प्रियदर्शनः ॥४५॥
45. anugacchati kākutsthaṃ bhrātaraṃ pālayan vane ,
siṃhaskandho mahābāhurmanasvī priyadarśanaḥ.
45. anugacchati kākutstham bhrātaram pālayan vane
siṃhaskandhaḥ mahābāhuḥ manasvī priyadarśanaḥ
45. vane kākutstham bhrātaram pālayan anugacchati

45. He follows his brother Rama (Kākutstha) in the forest, protecting him. He is lion-shouldered, mighty-armed, resolute, and of pleasing appearance.
पितृवद्वर्तते रामे मातृवन्मां समाचरन् ।
ह्रियमाणां तदा वीरो न तु मां वेद लक्ष्मणः ॥४६॥
46. pitṛvadvartate rāme mātṛvanmāṃ samācaran ,
hriyamāṇāṃ tadā vīro na tu māṃ veda lakṣmaṇaḥ.
46. pitṛvat vartate rāme mātṛvat mām samācaran
hriyamāṇām tadā vīraḥ na tu mām veda lakṣmaṇaḥ
46. rāme pitṛvat vartate mām mātṛvat samācaran tu
tadā hriyamāṇām mām vīraḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ na veda
46. He acts towards Rama as he would a father, and treats me like a mother. But then, that hero Lakshmana, while I was being abducted, truly did not know (about my plight).
वृद्धोपसेवी लक्ष्मीवाञ् शक्तो न बहुभाषिता ।
राजपुत्रः प्रियश्रेष्ठः सदृशः श्वशुरस्य मे ॥४७॥
47. vṛddhopasevī lakṣmīvāñ śakto na bahubhāṣitā ,
rājaputraḥ priyaśreṣṭhaḥ sadṛśaḥ śvaśurasya me.
47. vṛddhopasevī lakṣmīvān śaktaḥ na bahubhāṣitā
rājaputraḥ priyaśreṣṭhaḥ sadṛśaḥ śvaśurasya me
47. vṛddhopasevī lakṣmīvān śaktaḥ na bahubhāṣitā

47. He is devoted to serving elders, is endowed with auspicious qualities, is capable, and not prone to excessive talk. This prince is the dearest and best, and he is similar to my father-in-law.
मत्तः प्रियतरो नित्यं भ्राता रामस्य लक्ष्मणः ।
नियुक्तो धुरि यस्यां तु तामुद्वहति वीर्यवान् ॥४८॥
48. mattaḥ priyataro nityaṃ bhrātā rāmasya lakṣmaṇaḥ ,
niyukto dhuri yasyāṃ tu tāmudvahati vīryavān.
48. mattaḥ priyataraḥ nityam bhrātā rāmasya lakṣmaṇaḥ
| niyuktaḥ dhuri yasyām tu tām udvahati vīryavān
48. rāmasya bhrātā lakṣmaṇaḥ mattaḥ nityam priyataraḥ

48. Lakshmana, the brother of Rama, is always dearer to him than I am. That valiant one carries out whatever responsibility he is assigned.
यं दृष्ट्वा राघवो नैव वृद्धमार्यमनुस्मरत् ।
स ममार्थाय कुशलं वक्तव्यो वचनान्मम ।
मृदुर्नित्यं शुचिर्दक्षः प्रियो रामस्य लक्ष्मणः ॥४९॥
49. yaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāghavo naiva vṛddhamāryamanusmarat ,
sa mamārthāya kuśalaṃ vaktavyo vacanānmama ,
mṛdurnityaṃ śucirdakṣaḥ priyo rāmasya lakṣmaṇaḥ.
49. yam dṛṣṭvā rāghavaḥ na eva vṛddham āryam
anusmarat | saḥ mama arthāya kuśalam
vaktavyaḥ vacanāt mama | mṛduḥ nityam
śuciḥ dakṣaḥ priyaḥ rāmasya lakṣmaṇaḥ
49. rāghavaḥ yam dṛṣṭvā vṛddham āryam na eva
anusmarat saḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ mama arthāya
mama vacanāt kuśalam vaktavyaḥ rāmasya
priyaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ nityam mṛduḥ śuciḥ dakṣaḥ
49. Lakshmana, upon seeing whom Rama never remembered his aged and venerable father, and who is always gentle, pure, capable, and beloved by Rama, should be informed of my welfare on my behalf.
इदं ब्रूयाश्च मे नाथं शूरं रामं पुनः पुनः ।
जीवितं धारयिष्यामि मासं दशरथात्मज ।
ऊर्ध्वं मासान्न जीवेयं सत्येनाहं ब्रवीमि ते ॥५०॥
50. idaṃ brūyāśca me nāthaṃ śūraṃ rāmaṃ punaḥ punaḥ ,
jīvitaṃ dhārayiṣyāmi māsaṃ daśarathātmaja ,
ūrdhvaṃ māsānna jīveyaṃ satyenāhaṃ bravīmi te.
50. idam brūyāḥ ca me nātham śūram rāmam
punaḥ punaḥ | jīvitam dhārayiṣyāmi
māsam daśarathātmaja | ūrdhvam
māsāt na jīveyam satyena aham bravīmi te
50. ca me nātham śūram rāmam idam punaḥ punaḥ brūyāḥ he daśarathātmaja,
māsam jīvitam dhārayiṣyāmi māsāt ūrdhvam na jīveyam,
aham te satyena bravīmi
50. You should repeatedly tell my lord, the heroic Rama, this: 'Son of Dasaratha, I will sustain my life for only one month. After that month, I shall not live. I truly tell you this.'
रावणेनोपरुद्धां मां निकृत्या पापकर्मणा ।
त्रातुमर्हसि वीर त्वं पातालादिव कौशिकीम् ॥५१॥
51. rāvaṇenoparuddhāṃ māṃ nikṛtyā pāpakarmaṇā ,
trātumarhasi vīra tvaṃ pātālādiva kauśikīm.
51. rāvaṇena uparuddhām mām nikṛtyā pāpakarmaṇā |
trātum arhasi vīra tvam pātālāt iva kauśikīm
51. he vīra,
pāpakarmaṇā rāvaṇena nikṛtyā uparuddhām mām,
pātālāt kauśikīm iva,
tvam trātum arhasi
51. O hero, you ought to save me, who has been imprisoned by the evil-doer Ravana through deceit, just as (you would save) Kaushiki from the netherworld (pātāla).
ततो वस्त्रगतं मुक्त्वा दिव्यं चूडामणिं शुभम् ।
प्रदेयो राघवायेति सीता हनुमते ददौ ॥५२॥
52. tato vastragataṃ muktvā divyaṃ cūḍāmaṇiṃ śubham ,
pradeyo rāghavāyeti sītā hanumate dadau.
52. tataḥ vastragatam muktvā divyam cūḍāmaṇim śubham
pradeyaḥ rāghavāya iti sītā hanumate dadau
52. Then, taking out the divine and auspicious crest-jewel that was held in her garment, Sītā gave it to Hanumān, saying, 'This is to be given to Rāghava (Rāma).'
प्रतिगृह्य ततो वीरो मणिरत्नमनुत्तमम् ।
अङ्गुल्या योजयामास न ह्यस्या प्राभवद्भुजः ॥५३॥
53. pratigṛhya tato vīro maṇiratnamanuttamam ,
aṅgulyā yojayāmāsa na hyasyā prābhavadbhujaḥ.
53. pratigṛhya tataḥ vīraḥ maṇiratnam anuttamam
aṅgulyā yojayāmāsa na hi asyā prābhavat bhujaḥ
53. Then the hero (Hanumān), having received that unsurpassed jewel-gem, tried to place it on his finger, but indeed his arm was not capable (of accommodating it).
मणिरत्नं कपिवरः प्रतिगृह्याभिवाद्य च ।
सीतां प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा प्रणतः पार्श्वतः स्थितः ॥५४॥
54. maṇiratnaṃ kapivaraḥ pratigṛhyābhivādya ca ,
sītāṃ pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā praṇataḥ pārśvataḥ sthitaḥ.
54. maṇiratnam kapivaraḥ pratigṛhya abhivādya ca
sītām pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā praṇataḥ pārśvataḥ sthitaḥ
54. Having received the jewel-gem and offered salutations, the best of monkeys (Hanumān), after circumambulating Sītā, stood humbly by her side.
हर्षेण महता युक्तः सीतादर्शनजेन सः ।
हृदयेन गतो रामं शरीरेण तु विष्ठितः ॥५५॥
55. harṣeṇa mahatā yuktaḥ sītādarśanajena saḥ ,
hṛdayena gato rāmaṃ śarīreṇa tu viṣṭhitaḥ.
55. harṣeṇa mahatā yuktaḥ sītādarśanajena saḥ
hṛdayena gataḥ rāmam śarīreṇa tu viṣṭhitaḥ
55. He (Hanumān), filled with great joy born from the sight of Sītā, had spiritually reached Rāma with his heart, but remained physically present with his body.
मणिवरमुपगृह्य तं महार्हं जनकनृपात्मजया धृतं प्रभावात् ।
गिरिवरपवनावधूतमुक्तः सुखितमनाः प्रतिसंक्रमं प्रपेदे ॥५६॥
56. maṇivaramupagṛhya taṃ mahārhaṃ janakanṛpātmajayā dhṛtaṃ prabhāvāt ,
girivarapavanāvadhūtamuktaḥ sukhitamanāḥ pratisaṃkramaṃ prapede.
56. maṇivaram upagṛhya tam mahārham
janakanṛpātmajaya dhṛtam prabhāvāt
girivarapavanāvadhūtamuktaḥ

56. Having received that highly precious, excellent jewel, which was held by the daughter of King Janaka (Sita) due to its inherent power, with a joyful mind, freed from the powerful winds on the mountain peak, he set out on his return journey.
