नारायणगिरिं ते तु गर्जन्तो राक्षसाम्बुदाः ।
अवर्षन्निषुवर्षेण वर्षेणाद्रिमिवाम्बुदाः ॥१॥

1. Roaring, those demon-clouds showered Vishnu, who resembled Mount Nārāyaṇa, with a rain of arrows, just as clouds pour rain upon a mountain.
श्यामावदातस्तैर्विष्णुर्नीलैर्नक्तंचरोत्तमैः ।
वृतो ऽञ्जनगिरीवासीद्वर्षमाणैः पयोधरैः ॥२॥
2. śyāmāvadātastairviṣṇurnīlairnaktaṃcarottamaiḥ ,
vṛto'ñjanagirīvāsīdvarṣamāṇaiḥ payodharaiḥ.

2. Vishnu, dark and resplendent, surrounded by those blue, foremost demons, appeared like a collyrium mountain encircled by showering clouds.
शलभा इव केदारं मशका इव पर्वतम् ।
यथामृतघटं जीवा मकरा इव चार्णवम् ॥३॥
3. śalabhā iva kedāraṃ maśakā iva parvatam ,
yathāmṛtaghaṭaṃ jīvā makarā iva cārṇavam.

3. Just as locusts swarm a field, mosquitoes cover a mountain, living beings pursue a pot of nectar, and sea-monsters inhabit an ocean...
तथा रक्षोधनुर्मुक्ता वज्रानिलमनोजवाः ।
हरिं विशन्ति स्म शरा लोकास्तमिव पर्यये ॥४॥
4. tathā rakṣodhanurmuktā vajrānilamanojavāḥ ,
hariṃ viśanti sma śarā lokāstamiva paryaye.

4. Similarly, the arrows released from the demons' bows, possessing the speed of thunderbolts, wind, and thought, entered Hari (Viṣṇu), just as all worlds merge into him at the time of dissolution.
स्यन्दनैः स्यन्दनगता गजैश्च गजधूर्गताः ।
अश्वारोहाः सदश्वैश्च पादाताश्चाम्बरे चराः ॥५॥
5. syandanaiḥ syandanagatā gajaiśca gajadhūrgatāḥ ,
aśvārohāḥ sadaśvaiśca pādātāścāmbare carāḥ.

5. Charioteers in their chariots, elephant riders on their elephants, horsemen on fine steeds, and foot soldiers, along with those who traverse the sky.
राक्षसेन्द्रा गिरिनिभाः शरशक्त्यृष्टितोमरैः ।
निरुच्छ्वासं हरिं चक्रुः प्राणायाम इव द्विजम् ॥६॥
6. rākṣasendrā girinibhāḥ śaraśaktyṛṣṭitomaraiḥ ,
nirucchvāsaṃ hariṃ cakruḥ prāṇāyāma iva dvijam.
6. rākṣasa-indrāḥ giri-nibhāḥ śara-śakti-ṛṣṭi-tomaraiḥ
nirucchvāsam harim cakruḥ prāṇāyāmaḥ iva dvijam
6. giri-nibhāḥ rākṣasa-indrāḥ śara-śakti-ṛṣṭi-tomaraiḥ

6. The mighty leaders of the rākṣasas, resembling mountains, rendered Viṣṇu breathless with their arrows, spears, javelins, and lances, as if a twice-born (dvija) were performing breath control (prāṇāyāma).
निशाचरैस्तुद्यमानो मीनैरिव महातिमिः ।
शार्ङ्गमायम्य गात्राणि राक्षसानां महाहवे ॥७॥
7. niśācaraistudyamāno mīnairiva mahātimiḥ ,
śārṅgamāyamya gātrāṇi rākṣasānāṃ mahāhave.

śārṅgam āyamya gātrāṇi rākṣasānām mahā-āhave

7. Being tormented by the rākṣasas, just as a great whale is by (smaller) fish, (Viṣṇu) drew his Śārṅga bow, (aiming at) the bodies of the rākṣasas in the great battle.
शरैः पूर्णायतोत्सृष्टैर्वज्रवक्त्रैर्मनोजवैः ।
चिच्छेद तिलशो विष्णुः शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ॥८॥
8. śaraiḥ pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭairvajravaktrairmanojavaiḥ ,
ciccheda tilaśo viṣṇuḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.
8. śaraiḥ pūrṇa-āyata-utsṛṣṭaiḥ vajra-vaktrāiḥ manojavaiḥ
ciccheda tilaśaḥ viṣṇuḥ śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ

śaraiḥ tilaśaḥ śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ ciccheda
8. With arrows released after a full draw of his bow, whose tips were like thunderbolts and which flew with the speed of thought, (Lord) Viṣṇu cut (the rākṣasa bodies) into hundreds, then thousands, of sesame-seed-sized pieces.
विद्राव्य शरवर्षं तं वर्षं वायुरिवोत्थितम् ।
पाञ्चजन्यं महाशङ्खं प्रदध्मौ पुरुषोत्तमः ॥९॥
9. vidrāvya śaravarṣaṃ taṃ varṣaṃ vāyurivotthitam ,
pāñcajanyaṃ mahāśaṅkhaṃ pradadhmau puruṣottamaḥ.
9. vidrāvya śaravarṣam tam varṣam vāyuḥ iva utthitam
pāñcajanyam mahāśaṅkham pradadhamau puruṣottamaḥ
9. The supreme cosmic person (puruṣa), Kṛṣṇa, blew his great conch, Pāñcajanya, after dispersing that shower of arrows, just as a rising wind disperses rain.
सो ऽम्बुजो हरिणा ध्मातः सर्वप्राणेन शङ्खराट् ।
ररास भीमनिह्रादो युगान्ते जलदो यथा ॥१०॥
10. so'mbujo hariṇā dhmātaḥ sarvaprāṇena śaṅkharāṭ ,
rarāsa bhīmanihrādo yugānte jalado yathā.
10. saḥ ambujaḥ hariṇā dhmātaḥ sarvaprāṇena śaṅkharāṭ
rarāsa bhīmanihrādaḥ yugānte jaladaḥ yathā
10. That water-born conch (ambuja), the king of conches, blown by Hari (Kṛṣṇa) with all his might, roared with a terrifying sound, like a cloud at the end of an eon.
शङ्खराजरवः सो ऽथ त्रासयामास राक्षसान् ।
मृगराज इवारण्ये समदानिव कुञ्जरान् ॥११॥
11. śaṅkharājaravaḥ so'tha trāsayāmāsa rākṣasān ,
mṛgarāja ivāraṇye samadāniva kuñjarān.
11. śaṅkharājaravaḥ saḥ atha trāsayāmāsa rākṣasān
mṛgarājaḥ iva araṇye samadān iva kuñjarān
11. Then that sound of the king of conches terrified the Rākṣasas, just as a lion in the forest frightens mighty elephants.
न शेकुरश्वाः संस्थातुं विमदाः कुञ्जराभवन् ।
स्यन्दनेभ्यश्च्युता योधाः शङ्खरावितदुर्बलाः ॥१२॥
12. na śekuraśvāḥ saṃsthātuṃ vimadāḥ kuñjarābhavan ,
syandanebhyaścyutā yodhāḥ śaṅkharāvitadurbalāḥ.
12. na śekuḥ aśvāḥ saṃsthātum vimadāḥ kuñjarāḥ abhavan
syandanebhyaḥ cyutāḥ yodhāḥ śaṅkharāvitadurbalāḥ
12. The horses were unable to stand still, the elephants became disoriented and lost their might, and the warriors, weakened by the conch's roar, fell from their chariots.
शार्ङ्गचापविनिर्मुक्ता वज्रतुल्याननाः शराः ।
विदार्य तानि रक्षांसि सुपुङ्खा विविशुः क्षितिम् ॥१३॥
13. śārṅgacāpavinirmuktā vajratulyānanāḥ śarāḥ ,
vidārya tāni rakṣāṃsi supuṅkhā viviśuḥ kṣitim.
13. śārṅgacāpavinirmuktāḥ vajratulyānanāḥ śarāḥ
vidārya tāni rakṣāṃsi supuṅkhāḥ viviśuḥ kṣitim

13. Arrows, released from the Śārṅga bow, resembling thunderbolts in their formidable points, tore apart those demons and, being well-feathered, penetrated the earth.
भिद्यमानाः शरैश्चान्ये नारायणधनुश्च्युतैः ।
निपेतू राक्षसा भीमाः शैला वज्रहता इव ॥१४॥
14. bhidyamānāḥ śaraiścānye nārāyaṇadhanuścyutaiḥ ,
nipetū rākṣasā bhīmāḥ śailā vajrahatā iva.
14. bhidyamānāḥ śaraiḥ ca anye nārāyaṇadhanuścyutaiḥ
nipetuḥ rākṣasāḥ bhīmāḥ śailāḥ vajrahatāḥ iva
14. ca anye rākṣasāḥ bhīmāḥ nārāyaṇadhanuścyutaiḥ
śaraiḥ bhidyamānāḥ vajrahatāḥ śailāḥ iva nipetuḥ
14. And other demons, being torn apart by arrows released from Nārāyaṇa's bow, those formidable demons fell down, just like mountains struck by a thunderbolt.
व्रणैर्व्रणकरारीणामधोक्षजशरोद्भवैः ।
असृक्क्षरन्ति धाराभिः स्वर्णधारामिवाचलाः ॥१५॥
15. vraṇairvraṇakarārīṇāmadhokṣajaśarodbhavaiḥ ,
asṛkkṣaranti dhārābhiḥ svarṇadhārāmivācalāḥ.
15. vraṇaiḥ vraṇakarārīṇām adhokṣajaśarodbhavaiḥ
asṛk kṣaranti dhārābhiḥ svarṇadhārām iva acalāḥ
15. vraṇakarārīṇām acalāḥ adhokṣajaśarodbhavaiḥ
vraṇaiḥ dhārābhiḥ asṛk svarṇadhārām iva kṣaranti
15. From the wounds inflicted by the arrows of (Viṣṇu) Adhokṣaja, the immovable ones (demons) - who were themselves fierce wound-inflicting enemies - gushed forth streams of blood, resembling golden streams.
शङ्खराजरवश्चापि शार्ङ्गचापरवस्तथा ।
राक्षसानां रवांश्चापि ग्रसते वैष्णवो रवः ॥१६॥
16. śaṅkharājaravaścāpi śārṅgacāparavastathā ,
rākṣasānāṃ ravāṃścāpi grasate vaiṣṇavo ravaḥ.
16. śaṅkharājaravaḥ ca api śārṅgacāparavaḥ tathā
rākṣasānām ravān ca api grasate vaiṣṇavaḥ ravaḥ
16. śaṅkharājaravaḥ ca api śārṅgacāparavaḥ tathā
rākṣasānām ravān ca api vaiṣṇavaḥ ravaḥ grasate
16. And the sound of the king of conches, and similarly the sound of the Śārṅga bow, and also the roars of the demons - all these are swallowed by Viṣṇu's (vaiṣṇava) roar.
सूर्यादिव करा घोरा ऊर्मयः सागरादिव ।
पर्वतादिव नागेन्द्रा वार्योघा इव चाम्बुदात् ॥१७॥
17. sūryādiva karā ghorā ūrmayaḥ sāgarādiva ,
parvatādiva nāgendrā vāryoghā iva cāmbudāt.
17. sūryāt iva karāḥ ghorāḥ ūrmayaḥ sāgarāt iva
parvatāt iva nāgendrāḥ vāryoghāḥ iva ca ambudāt
17. ghorāḥ karāḥ sūryāt iva ūrmayaḥ sāgarāt iva
nāgendrāḥ parvatāt iva ca vāryoghāḥ ambudāt iva
17. Like terrifying rays from the sun, like waves from the ocean, like great elephants from mountains, and like torrents of water from a cloud.
तथा बाणा विनिर्मुक्ताः शार्ङ्गान्नरायणेरिताः ।
निर्धावन्तीषवस्तूर्णं शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ॥१८॥
18. tathā bāṇā vinirmuktāḥ śārṅgānnarāyaṇeritāḥ ,
nirdhāvantīṣavastūrṇaṃ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.
18. tathā bāṇāḥ vinirmuktāḥ śārṅgāt nārāyaṇerītāḥ
nirdhāvanti iṣavaḥ tūrṇam śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
18. tathā śārṅgāt nārāyaṇerītāḥ vinirmuktāḥ iṣavaḥ
tūrṇam śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ nirdhāvanti
18. Thus, arrows released and propelled by Nārāyaṇa from his Śārṅga bow, rush forth swiftly by hundreds and by thousands.
शरभेण यथा सिंहाः सिंहेन द्विरदा यथा ।
द्विरदेन यथा व्याघ्रा व्याघ्रेण द्वीपिनो यथा ॥१९॥
19. śarabheṇa yathā siṃhāḥ siṃhena dviradā yathā ,
dviradena yathā vyāghrā vyāghreṇa dvīpino yathā.
19. śarabheṇa yathā siṃhāḥ siṃhena dviradāḥ yathā
dviradena yathā vyāghrāḥ vyāghreṇa dvīpinaḥ yathā
19. yathā siṃhāḥ śarabheṇa yathā dviradāḥ siṃhena

19. As lions are put to flight by a śarabha, as elephants by a lion, as tigers by an elephant, and as leopards by a tiger.
द्वीपिना च यथा श्वानः शुना मार्जारका यथा ।
मार्जारेण यथा सर्पाः सर्पेण च यथाखवः ॥२०॥
20. dvīpinā ca yathā śvānaḥ śunā mārjārakā yathā ,
mārjāreṇa yathā sarpāḥ sarpeṇa ca yathākhavaḥ.
20. dvīpinā ca yathā śvānaḥ śunā mārjārakāḥ yathā
mārjāreṇa yathā sarpāḥ sarpeṇa ca yathā ākhavaḥ
20. ca yathā śvānaḥ dvīpinā yathā mārjārakāḥ śunā
yathā sarpāḥ mārjāreṇa ca yathā ākhavaḥ sarpeṇa
20. And as dogs are put to flight by a leopard, as cats by a dog, as snakes by a cat, and as mice by a snake.
तथा ते राक्षसा युद्धे विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना ।
द्रवन्ति द्राविताश्चैव शायिताश्च महीतले ॥२१॥
21. tathā te rākṣasā yuddhe viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā ,
dravanti drāvitāścaiva śāyitāśca mahītale.
21. tathā te rākṣasāḥ yuddhe viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā
/ dravanti drāvitāḥ ca eva śāyitāḥ ca mahītale
21. tathā yuddhe te rākṣasāḥ prabhaviṣṇunā viṣṇunā
drāvitāḥ ca eva śāyitāḥ ca mahītale dravanti
21. Thus, those demons in battle, having been routed and laid low on the ground by the mighty (Viṣṇu), flee.
राक्षसानां सहस्राणि निहत्य मधुसूदनः ।
वारिजं नादयामास तोयदं सुरराडिव ॥२२॥
22. rākṣasānāṃ sahasrāṇi nihatya madhusūdanaḥ ,
vārijaṃ nādayāmāsa toyadaṃ surarāḍiva.
22. rākṣasānām sahasrāṇi nihatya madhusūdanaḥ
/ vārijaṃ nādayāmāsa toyadaṃ surarāṭ iva
22. madhusūdanaḥ rākṣasānām sahasrāṇi nihatya
vārijaṃ nādayāmāsa surarāṭ toyadaṃ iva
22. Having slain thousands of demons, Madhusūdana blew his conch, just as the king of the gods (Indra) causes a thundercloud to roar.
नारायणशरग्रस्तं शङ्खनादसुविह्वलम् ।
ययौ लङ्कामभिमुखं प्रभग्नं राक्षसं बलम् ॥२३॥
23. nārāyaṇaśaragrastaṃ śaṅkhanādasuvihvalam ,
yayau laṅkāmabhimukhaṃ prabhagnaṃ rākṣasaṃ balam.

laṅkām abhimukhaṃ prabhagnaṃ rākṣasaṃ balam

23. The routed demon army, afflicted by Nārāyaṇa's arrows and greatly agitated by the sound of the conch, fled towards Laṅkā.
प्रभग्ने राक्षसबले नारायणशराहते ।
सुमाली शरवर्षेण आववार रणे हरिम् ॥२४॥
24. prabhagne rākṣasabale nārāyaṇaśarāhate ,
sumālī śaravarṣeṇa āvavāra raṇe harim.

24. When the demon army was routed and struck by Nārāyaṇa's arrows, Sumāli assailed Hari in battle with a shower of arrows.
उत्क्षिप्य हेमाभरणं करं करमिव द्विपः ।
ररास राक्षसो हर्षात् सतडित्तोयदो यथा ॥२५॥
25. utkṣipya hemābharaṇaṃ karaṃ karamiva dvipaḥ ,
rarāsa rākṣaso harṣāt sataḍittoyado yathā.
25. utkṣipya hemābharaṇam karam karam iva dvipaḥ
rarāsa rākṣasaḥ harṣāt sa-taḍit-toyadaḥ yathā
25. rākṣasaḥ harṣāt hemābharaṇam karam dvipaḥ karam

25. Raising his hand with a golden ornament, like an elephant raises its trunk, the demon roared with joy, just like a cloud accompanied by lightning.
सुमालेर्नर्दतस्तस्य शिरो ज्वलितकुण्डलम् ।
चिच्छेद यन्तुरश्वाश्च भ्रान्तास्तस्य तु रक्षसः ॥२६॥
26. sumālernardatastasya śiro jvalitakuṇḍalam ,
ciccheda yanturaśvāśca bhrāntāstasya tu rakṣasaḥ.
26. sumāleḥ nardataḥ tasya śiraḥ jvalitakuṇḍalam
ciccheda yantuḥ aśvāḥ ca bhrāntāḥ tasya tu rakṣasaḥ
26. tasya nardataḥ sumāleḥ jvalitakuṇḍalam śiraḥ
ciccheda ca tasya rakṣasaḥ yantuḥ aśvāḥ tu bhrāntāḥ
26. He cut off the head, adorned with blazing earrings, of the roaring Sumāli. And the horses of that demon (rakṣasa)'s charioteer became bewildered.
तैरश्वैर्भ्राम्यते भ्रान्तैः सुमाली राक्षसेश्वरः ।
इन्द्रियाश्वैर्यथा भ्रान्तैर्धृतिहीनो यथा नरः ॥२७॥
27. tairaśvairbhrāmyate bhrāntaiḥ sumālī rākṣaseśvaraḥ ,
indriyāśvairyathā bhrāntairdhṛtihīno yathā naraḥ.
27. taiḥ aśvaiḥ bhrāmyate bhrāntaiḥ sumālī rākṣaseśvaraḥ
indriya-aśvaiḥ yathā bhrāntaiḥ dhṛti-hīnaḥ yathā naraḥ
27. rākṣaseśvaraḥ sumālī taiḥ bhrāntaiḥ aśvaiḥ bhrāmyate
yathā dhṛtihīnaḥ naraḥ bhrāntaiḥ indriyāśvaiḥ yathā
27. Sumāli, the lord of demons, was dragged around by those bewildered horses, just as a man devoid of fortitude (dhṛti) is bewildered by the horses of the senses (indriyas).
माली चाभ्यद्रवद् युद्धे प्रगृह्य सशरं धनुः ।
मालेर्धनुश्च्युता बाणाः कार्तस्वरविभूषिताः ।
विविशुर्हरिमासाद्य क्रौञ्चं पत्ररथा इव ॥२८॥
28. mālī cābhyadravad yuddhe pragṛhya saśaraṃ dhanuḥ ,
mālerdhanuścyutā bāṇāḥ kārtasvaravibhūṣitāḥ ,
viviśurharimāsādya krauñcaṃ patrarathā iva.
28. mālī ca abhyadravat yuddhe pragṛhya
sa-śaram dhanuḥ māleḥ dhanuḥ cyutāḥ
bāṇāḥ kārtasvara-vibhūṣitāḥ viviśuḥ
harim āsādya krauñcam patrarathāḥ iva
28. ca mālī yuddhe saśaram dhanuḥ pragṛhya
abhyadravat māleḥ dhanuḥ cyutāḥ
kārtasvaravibhūṣitāḥ bāṇāḥ harim
āsādya viviśuḥ patrarathāḥ krauñcam iva
28. And Māli attacked in battle, having seized his bow equipped with arrows. Arrows, adorned with gold, discharged from Māli's bow, penetrated the enemy (hari) upon reaching him, just as birds enter the Krauñca mountain.
अर्द्यमानः शरैः सो ऽथ मालिमुक्तैः सहस्रशः ।
चुक्षुभे न रणे विष्णुर्जितेन्द्रिय इवाधिभिः ॥२९॥
29. ardyamānaḥ śaraiḥ so'tha mālimuktaiḥ sahasraśaḥ ,
cukṣubhe na raṇe viṣṇurjitendriya ivādhibhiḥ.

29. Then, Viṣṇu, though tormented by thousands of arrows released by Mali, was not agitated in battle, just as one with subdued senses (jitendriya) is not disturbed by mental distresses (adhi).
अथ मौर्वी स्वनं कृत्वा भगवान्भूतभावनः ।
मालिनं प्रति बाणौघान् ससर्जासिगदाधरः ॥३०॥
30. atha maurvī svanaṃ kṛtvā bhagavānbhūtabhāvanaḥ ,
mālinaṃ prati bāṇaughān sasarjāsigadādharaḥ.

30. Then, the divine Lord (bhagavān), the maintainer of beings (bhūtabhāvana), holding the sword and mace (asigadādhara), making the bowstring twang, discharged a volley of arrows towards Mali.
ते मालिदेहमासाद्य वज्रविद्युत्प्रभाः शराः ।
पिबन्ति रुधिरं तस्य नागा इव पुरामृतम् ॥३१॥
31. te mālidehamāsādya vajravidyutprabhāḥ śarāḥ ,
pibanti rudhiraṃ tasya nāgā iva purāmṛtam.

pibanti rudhiram tasya nāgāḥ iva purāmṛtam
31. Those arrows, which had the brilliance of thunderbolts and lightning, having reached Mali's body, drank his blood, just as nāgas (nāga) formerly drank the ancient elixir (amṛta).
मालिनं विमुखं कृत्वा मालिमौलिं हरिर्बलात् ।
रथं च सध्वजं चापं वाजिनश्च न्यपातयत् ॥३२॥
32. mālinaṃ vimukhaṃ kṛtvā mālimauliṃ harirbalāt ,
rathaṃ ca sadhvajaṃ cāpaṃ vājinaśca nyapātayat.

32. Hari (Viṣṇu), having defeated Mali, forcefully struck down Mali's head, his chariot with its banner, his bow, and his horses.
विरथस्तु गदां गृह्य माली नक्तंचरोत्तमः ।
आपुप्लुवे गदापाणिर्गिर्यग्रादिव केषरी ॥३३॥
33. virathastu gadāṃ gṛhya mālī naktaṃcarottamaḥ ,
āpupluve gadāpāṇirgiryagrādiva keṣarī.
33. virathaḥ tu gadām gṛhya mālī naktaṃcara-uttamaḥ

33. The foremost of the night-wanderers (rākṣasas), Mālin, having dismounted from his chariot and grasping his mace, sprang forth, mace in hand, like a lion from a mountain peak.
स तया गरुडं संख्ये ईशानमिव चान्तकः ।
ललाटदेशे ऽभ्यहनद्वज्रेणेन्द्रो यथाचलम् ॥३४॥
34. sa tayā garuḍaṃ saṃkhye īśānamiva cāntakaḥ ,
lalāṭadeśe'bhyahanadvajreṇendro yathācalam.

lalāṭa-deśe abhyahanat vajreṇa indraḥ yathā acalam
34. With that (mace), Mālin struck Garuḍa in battle on the forehead region, just as Antaka (Yama) would strike Īśāna (Śiva), and as Indra would strike a mountain with his thunderbolt.
गदयाभिहतस्तेन मालिना गरुडो भृशम् ।
रणात् पराङ्मुखं देवं कृतवान् वेदनातुरः ॥३५॥
35. gadayābhihatastena mālinā garuḍo bhṛśam ,
raṇāt parāṅmukhaṃ devaṃ kṛtavān vedanāturaḥ.

35. Garuḍa, severely struck by that mace from Mālin and distressed by pain, was caused by him to turn away from the battle.
पराङ्मुखे कृते देवे मालिना गरुडेन वै ।
उदतिष्ठन्महानादो रक्षसामभिनर्दताम् ॥३६॥
36. parāṅmukhe kṛte deve mālinā garuḍena vai ,
udatiṣṭhanmahānādo rakṣasāmabhinardatām.

36. When the god Garuḍa had thus been made to turn away by Mālin, a great roar arose from the shouting (rākṣasas).
रक्षसां नदतां नादं श्रुत्वा हरिहयानुजः ।
पराङ्मुखो ऽप्युत्ससर्ज चक्रं मालिजिघांसया ॥३७॥
37. rakṣasāṃ nadatāṃ nādaṃ śrutvā harihayānujaḥ ,
parāṅmukho'pyutsasarja cakraṃ mālijighāṃsayā.

37. Hearing the roaring sound of the rākṣasas, Kṛṣṇa, the younger brother of Indra, even while facing away, hurled his discus with the intent to slay Māli.
तत् सूर्यमण्डलाभासं स्वभासा भासयन्नभः ।
कालचक्रनिभं चक्रं मालेः शीर्षमपातयत् ॥३८॥
38. tat sūryamaṇḍalābhāsaṃ svabhāsā bhāsayannabhaḥ ,
kālacakranibhaṃ cakraṃ māleḥ śīrṣamapātayat.

38. That discus, which shone like the solar orb and illuminated the sky with its own brilliance, resembling the wheel of time, caused Māli's head to fall.
तच्छिरो राक्षसेन्द्रस्य चक्रोत्कृत्तं विभीषणम् ।
पपात रुधिरोद्गारि पुरा राहुशिरो यथा ॥३९॥
39. tacchiro rākṣasendrasya cakrotkṛttaṃ vibhīṣaṇam ,
papāta rudhirodgāri purā rāhuśiro yathā.

39. That terrifying head of the king of rākṣasas, severed by the discus and gushing blood, fell, just like Rāhu's head in ancient times.

सिंहनादरवो मुक्तः साधु देवेति वादिभिः ॥४०॥
40. tataḥ suraiḥ susaṃhṛṣṭaiḥ sarvaprāṇasamīritaḥ ,
siṃhanādaravo muktaḥ sādhu deveti vādibhiḥ.

40. Then, the exceedingly joyful gods, proclaiming "Well done, O divine one! (deva)", let out a lion-like roar of applause, uttered with all their breath.
मालिनं निहतं दृष्ट्वा सुमाली मल्यवानपि ।
सबलौ शोकसंतप्तौ लङ्कां प्रति विधावितौ ॥४१॥
41. mālinaṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā sumālī malyavānapi ,
sabalau śokasaṃtaptau laṅkāṃ prati vidhāvitau.

41. Seeing Mālin slain, Sumālī and Mālyavān, both overcome with grief, fled with their forces towards Laṅkā.
गरुडस्तु समाश्वस्तः संनिवृत्य महामनाः ।
राक्षसान्द्रावयामास पक्षवातेन कोपितः ॥४२॥
42. garuḍastu samāśvastaḥ saṃnivṛtya mahāmanāḥ ,
rākṣasāndrāvayāmāsa pakṣavātena kopitaḥ.

42. But the great-souled Garuḍa, having regained his composure, turned back and, enraged, drove away the demons with the wind from his wings.
नारायणो ऽपीषुवराशनीभिर्विदारयामास धनुःप्रमुक्तैः ।
नक्तंचरान्मुक्तविधूतकेशान्यथाशनीभिः सतडिन्महेन्द्रः ॥४३॥
43. nārāyaṇo'pīṣuvarāśanībhirvidārayāmāsa dhanuḥpramuktaiḥ ,
naktaṃcarānmuktavidhūtakeśānyathāśanībhiḥ sataḍinmahendraḥ.

43. Nārāyaṇa also, with excellent arrows, which were like thunderbolts, released from his bow, tore apart the night-roaming demons whose hair was loose and disheveled, just as the great Indra (Mahendra) does with lightning-accompanied thunderbolts.
भिन्नातपत्रं पतमानशस्त्रं शरैरपध्वस्तविशीर्णदेहम् ।
विनिःसृतान्त्रं भयलोलनेत्रं बलं तदुन्मत्तनिभं बभूव ॥४४॥
44. bhinnātapatraṃ patamānaśastraṃ śarairapadhvastaviśīrṇadeham ,
viniḥsṛtāntraṃ bhayalolanetraṃ balaṃ tadunmattanibhaṃ babhūva.

44. With shattered parasols, falling weapons, bodies destroyed and torn apart by arrows, protruding intestines, and eyes trembling with fear - that army became like a crazed host.
सिंहार्दितानामिव कुञ्जराणां निशाचराणां सह कुञ्जराणाम् ।
रवाश्च वेगाश्च समं बभूवुः पुराणसिंहेन विमर्दितानाम् ॥४५॥
45. siṃhārditānāmiva kuñjarāṇāṃ niśācarāṇāṃ saha kuñjarāṇām ,
ravāśca vegāśca samaṃ babhūvuḥ purāṇasiṃhena vimarditānām.

45. The roars and charges of the night-rovers, along with their elephants, occurred simultaneously, resembling those of elephants tormented by lions, as they were being crushed by the ancient lion (Rāma).
संछाद्यमाना हरिबाणजालैः स्वबाणजालानि समुत्सृजन्तः ।
धावन्ति नक्तंचरकालमेघा वायुप्रणुन्ना इव कालमेघाः ॥४६॥
46. saṃchādyamānā haribāṇajālaiḥ svabāṇajālāni samutsṛjantaḥ ,
dhāvanti naktaṃcarakālameghā vāyupraṇunnā iva kālameghāḥ.

46. The night-roaming dark clouds (demons), releasing their own arrays of arrows while being obscured by the arrays of Hari's (Rāma's) arrows, rush about like dark clouds driven by the wind.
चक्रप्रहारैर्विनिकृत्तशीर्षाः संचूर्णिताङ्गाश्च गदाप्रहारैः ।
असिप्रहारैर्बहुधा विभक्ताः पतन्ति शैला इव राक्षसेन्द्राः ॥४७॥
47. cakraprahārairvinikṛttaśīrṣāḥ saṃcūrṇitāṅgāśca gadāprahāraiḥ ,
asiprahārairbahudhā vibhaktāḥ patanti śailā iva rākṣasendrāḥ.

47. The chief demons fall like mountains, their heads severed by disc-blows, their limbs crushed by mace-blows, and their bodies divided in many ways by sword-blows.
चक्रकृत्तास्यकमला गदासंचूर्णितोरसः ।
लाङ्गलग्लपितग्रीवा मुसलैर्भिन्नमस्तकाः ॥४८॥
48. cakrakṛttāsyakamalā gadāsaṃcūrṇitorasaḥ ,

48. With their lotus-like faces severed by discs, their chests utterly crushed by maces, their necks wasted by ploughshares, and their heads split by pestles.
के चिच्चैवासिना छिन्नास्तथान्ये शरताडिताः ।
निपेतुरम्बरात्तूर्णं राक्षसाः सागराम्भसि ॥४९॥
49. ke ciccaivāsinā chinnāstathānye śaratāḍitāḥ ,
nipeturambarāttūrṇaṃ rākṣasāḥ sāgarāmbhasi.

49. Some demons (rākṣasas) were cut down by swords, while others, struck by arrows, quickly fell from the sky into the ocean's waters.
तदाम्बरं विगलितहारकुण्डलैर्निशाचरैर्नीलबलाहकोपमैः ।
निपात्यमानैर्ददृशे निरन्तरं निपात्यमानैरिव नीलपर्वतैः ॥५०॥
50. tadāmbaraṃ vigalitahārakuṇḍalairniśācarairnīlabalāhakopamaiḥ ,
nipātyamānairdadṛśe nirantaraṃ nipātyamānairiva nīlaparvataiḥ.

50. That sky was seen incessantly, filled with night-wanderers (niśācaras) who resembled dark clouds and had their garlands and earrings fallen, as if blue mountains themselves were being continuously hurled down.
