एवमुक्ता तु वैदेही प्रियार्हा प्रियवादिनी ।
प्रणयादेव संक्रुद्धा भर्तारमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१॥

1. Having been addressed thus, Vaidehī, who was worthy of affection and spoke endearingly, became angry out of love (praṇaya) itself, and spoke these words to her husband.
आर्यपुत्र पिता माता भ्राता पुत्रस्तथा स्नुषा ।
स्वानि पुण्यानि भुञ्जानाः स्वं स्वं भाग्यमुपासते ॥२॥
2. āryaputra pitā mātā bhrātā putrastathā snuṣā ,
svāni puṇyāni bhuñjānāḥ svaṃ svaṃ bhāgyamupāsate.
2. āryaputra pitā mātā bhrātā putraḥ tathā snuṣā
svāni puṇyāni bhuñjānāḥ svam svam bhāgyam upāsate

2. O noble son (āryaputra), father, mother, brother, son, and also daughter-in-law – all enjoying their own merits, attend to their own individual fortune.
भर्तुर्भाग्यं तु भार्यैका प्राप्नोति पुरुषर्षभ ।
अतश्चैवाहमादिष्टा वने वस्तव्यमित्यपि ॥३॥
3. bharturbhāgyaṃ tu bhāryaikā prāpnoti puruṣarṣabha ,
ataścaivāhamādiṣṭā vane vastavyamityapi.
3. bhartuḥ bhāgyam tu bhāryā ekā prāpnoti puruṣarṣabha
ataḥ ca eva aham ādiṣṭā vane vastavyam iti api
3. puruṣarṣabha bhāryā ekā bhartuḥ bhāgyam tu prāpnoti
ataḥ ca eva aham vane vastavyam iti api ādiṣṭā
3. O best among men, a wife alone partakes in her husband's destiny. For this very reason, I too have been instructed: 'You must reside in the forest.'
न पिता नात्मजो नात्मा न माता न सखीजनः ।
इह प्रेत्य च नारीणां पतिरेको गतिः सदा ॥४॥
4. na pitā nātmajo nātmā na mātā na sakhījanaḥ ,
iha pretya ca nārīṇāṃ patireko gatiḥ sadā.

iha pretya ca nārīṇām patiḥ ekaḥ gatiḥ sadā

4. For women, neither father, nor son, nor even one's own self (ātman), nor mother, nor friends, provide refuge. Both in this world and after death, the husband alone is always their sole refuge (gati).
यदि त्वं प्रस्थितो दुर्गं वनमद्यैव राघव ।
अग्रतस्ते गमिष्यामि मृद्नन्ती कुशकण्टकान् ॥५॥
5. yadi tvaṃ prasthito durgaṃ vanamadyaiva rāghava ,
agrataste gamiṣyāmi mṛdnantī kuśakaṇṭakān.
5. yadi tvam prasthitaḥ durgam vanam adya eva
rāghava agrataḥ te gamiṣyāmi mṛdnantī kuśakaṇṭakān
5. rāghava yadi tvam adya eva durgam vanam prasthitaḥ
agrataḥ te kuśakaṇṭakān mṛdnantī gamiṣyāmi
5. O descendent of Raghu, if you are indeed setting out today for the difficult forest, I will go ahead of you, trampling down the thorns of kuśa grass.
ईर्ष्या रोषौ बहिष्कृत्य भुक्तशेषमिवोदकम् ।
नय मां वीर विश्रब्धः पापं मयि न विद्यते ॥६॥
6. īrṣyā roṣau bahiṣkṛtya bhuktaśeṣamivodakam ,
naya māṃ vīra viśrabdhaḥ pāpaṃ mayi na vidyate.
6. īrṣyā roṣau bahiṣkṛtya bhuktaśeṣam iva udakam
naya mām vīra viśrabdhaḥ pāpam mayi na vidyate
6. vīra īrṣyā roṣau bhahiṣkṛtya bhuktaśeṣam udakam
iva viśrabdhaḥ mām naya mayi pāpam na vidyate
6. O hero, having cast out jealousy and anger, just as one discards leftover water after a meal, confidently lead me (with you). There is no sin in me.
प्रासादाग्रैर्विमानैर्वा वैहायसगतेन वा ।
सर्वावस्थागता भर्तुः पादच्छाया विशिष्यते ॥७॥
7. prāsādāgrairvimānairvā vaihāyasagatena vā ,
sarvāvasthāgatā bhartuḥ pādacchāyā viśiṣyate.
7. prāsādāgraiḥ vimānaiḥ vā vaihāyasagatena vā
sarvāvasthāgatā bhartuḥ pādacchāyā viśiṣyate
7. bhartuḥ pādacchāyā sarvāvasthāgatā prāsādāgraiḥ
vā vimānaiḥ vā vaihāyasagatena vā viśiṣyate
7. Whether from the tops of palaces, or from celestial chariots, or by moving through the sky, the shelter (lit. shade) of a husband's feet is superior in all situations.
अनुशिष्टास्मि मात्रा च पित्रा च विविधाश्रयम् ।
नास्मि संप्रति वक्तव्या वर्तितव्यं यथा मया ॥८॥
8. anuśiṣṭāsmi mātrā ca pitrā ca vividhāśrayam ,
nāsmi saṃprati vaktavyā vartitavyaṃ yathā mayā.
8. anuśiṣṭā asmi mātrā ca pitrā ca vividhāśrayam na
asmi saṃprati vaktavyā vartitavyaṃ yathā mayā
8. mayā mātrā ca pitrā ca vividhāśrayam anuśiṣṭā asmi
saṃprati mayā yathā vartitavyaṃ vaktavyā na asmi
8. I have been instructed by my mother and by my father concerning various principles. I am not now to be told how I should conduct myself.
सुखं वने निवत्स्यामि यथैव भवने पितुः ।
अचिन्तयन्ती त्रींल् लोकांश्चिन्तयन्ती पतिव्रतम् ॥९॥
9. sukhaṃ vane nivatsyāmi yathaiva bhavane pituḥ ,
acintayantī trīṃl lokāṃścintayantī pativratam.
9. sukhaṃ vane nivatsyāmi yathā eva bhavane pituḥ
acintayantī trīn lokān cintayantī pativratam
9. vane sukhaṃ nivatsyāmi yathā pituḥ bhavane eva
acintayantī trīn lokān cintayantī pativratam
9. I will happily reside in the forest, just as I did in my father's home, not contemplating the three worlds, but reflecting solely on my devotion (pativratam) to my husband.
शुश्रूषमाणा ते नित्यं नियता ब्रह्मचारिणी ।
सह रंस्ये त्वया वीर वनेषु मधुगन्धिषु ॥१०॥
10. śuśrūṣamāṇā te nityaṃ niyatā brahmacāriṇī ,
saha raṃsye tvayā vīra vaneṣu madhugandhiṣu.
10. śuśrūṣamāṇā te nityaṃ niyatā brahmacāriṇī
saha raṃsye tvayā vīra vaneṣu madhugandhiṣu
10. vīra nityaṃ te śuśrūṣamāṇā niyatā brahmacāriṇī
tvayā saha madhugandhiṣu vaneṣu raṃsye
10. Always serving you, self-controlled and observing the ascetic vow (brahmacāriṇī), O hero, I will rejoice with you in the forests fragrant with spring flowers.
त्वं हि कर्तुं वने शक्तो राम संपरिपालनम् ।
अन्यस्य पै जनस्येह किं पुनर्मम मानद ॥११॥
11. tvaṃ hi kartuṃ vane śakto rāma saṃparipālanam ,
anyasya pai janasyeha kiṃ punarmama mānada.
11. tvam hi kartum vane śaktaḥ rāma saṃparipālanam
anyasya vai janasya iha kim punaḥ mama mānada
11. mānada rāma tvam hi vane anyasya vai janasya
saṃparipālanam kartum śaktaḥ mama kim punaḥ
11. O Rama, you are certainly capable of providing complete protection in the forest even for another person here; how much more so for me, O giver of honor!
फलमूलाशना नित्यं भविष्यामि न संशयः ।
न ते दुःखं करिष्यामि निवसन्ती सह त्वया ॥१२॥
12. phalamūlāśanā nityaṃ bhaviṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ ,
na te duḥkhaṃ kariṣyāmi nivasantī saha tvayā.
12. phalamūlāśanā nityam bhaviṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ
na te duḥkham kariṣyāmi nivasanti saha tvayā
12. nityam phalamūlāśanā bhaviṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ
tvayā saha nivasanti te duḥkham na kariṣyāmi
12. I will constantly subsist on fruits and roots; there is no doubt about that. Dwelling with you, I will not cause you any sorrow.
इच्छामि सरितः शैलान्पल्वलानि वनानि च ।
द्रष्टुं सर्वत्र निर्भीता त्वया नाथेन धीमता ॥१३॥
13. icchāmi saritaḥ śailānpalvalāni vanāni ca ,
draṣṭuṃ sarvatra nirbhītā tvayā nāthena dhīmatā.
13. icchāmi saritaḥ śailān palvalāni vanāni ca
draṣṭum sarvatra nirbhītā tvayā nāthena dhīmatā
13. tvayā dhīmatā nāthena nirbhītā sarvatra saritaḥ
śailān palvalāni vanāni ca draṣṭum icchāmi
13. With you, my wise protector (nāthena), I wish to fearlessly see rivers, mountains, ponds, and forests everywhere.
हंसकारण्डवाकीर्णाः पद्मिनीः साधुपुष्पिताः ।
इच्छेयं सुखिनी द्रष्टुं त्वया वीरेण संगता ॥१४॥
14. haṃsakāraṇḍavākīrṇāḥ padminīḥ sādhupuṣpitāḥ ,
iccheyaṃ sukhinī draṣṭuṃ tvayā vīreṇa saṃgatā.
14. haṃsakāraṇḍavākīrṇāḥ padminīḥ sādhupuṣpitāḥ
iccheyam sukhinī draṣṭum tvayā vīreṇa saṃgatā
14. tvayā vīreṇa saṃgatā sukhinī haṃsakāraṇḍavākīrṇāḥ
sādhupuṣpitāḥ padminīḥ draṣṭum iccheyam
14. Accompanied by you, the hero, I would happily wish to see lotus ponds, abundant with swans and karandava ducks and beautifully bloomed.
सह त्वया विशालाक्ष रंस्ये परमनन्दिनी ।
एवं वर्षसहस्राणां शतं वाहं त्वया सह ॥१५॥
15. saha tvayā viśālākṣa raṃsye paramanandinī ,
evaṃ varṣasahasrāṇāṃ śataṃ vāhaṃ tvayā saha.
15. saha tvayā viśālākṣa raṃsye paramanandinī
evam varṣasahasrāṇām śatam vā aham tvayā saha
15. viśālākṣa paramanandinī aham tvayā saha raṃsye
evam vā tvayā saha varṣasahasrāṇām śatam
15. O broad-eyed one, I shall rejoice with you, supremely delighted. And thus, I shall be with you for a hundred thousand years.
स्वर्गे ऽपि च विना वासो भविता यदि राघव ।
त्वया मम नरव्याघ्र नाहं तमपि रोचये ॥१६॥
16. svarge'pi ca vinā vāso bhavitā yadi rāghava ,
tvayā mama naravyāghra nāhaṃ tamapi rocaye.
16. svarge api ca vinā vāsaḥ bhavitā yadi rāghava
tvayā mama naravyāghra na aham tam api rocaye
16. rāghava naravyāghra yadi mama tvayā vinā vāsaḥ svarge api ca bhavitā,
aham tam api na rocaye
16. O Rāghava, O tiger among men, if there is to be a dwelling for me even in heaven without you, I do not desire even that.
अहं गमिष्यामि वनं सुदुर्गमं मृगायुतं वानरवारणैर्युतम् ।
वने निवत्स्यामि यथा पितुर्गृहे तवैव पादाव् उपगृह्य संमता ॥१७॥
17. ahaṃ gamiṣyāmi vanaṃ sudurgamaṃ mṛgāyutaṃ vānaravāraṇairyutam ,
vane nivatsyāmi yathā piturgṛhe tavaiva pādāv upagṛhya saṃmatā.
17. aham gamiṣyāmi vanam sudurgamam
mṛgāyutam vānaravāraṇaiḥ yutam
vane nivatsyāmi yathā pituḥ gṛhe
tava eva pādau upagṛhya saṃmatā
17. aham sudurgamam mṛgāyutam vānaravāraṇaiḥ
yutam vanam gamiṣyāmi
saṃmatā (aham) tava eva pādau upagṛhya
yathā pituḥ gṛhe vane nivatsyāmi
17. I shall go to the forest, which is very difficult to access, filled with deer, and teeming with monkeys and elephants. I shall dwell in that forest as if in my father's house, clasping your feet alone, contented.
अनन्यभावामनुरक्तचेतसं त्वया वियुक्तां मरणाय निश्चिताम् ।
नयस्व मां साधु कुरुष्व याचनां न ते मयातो गुरुता भविष्यति ॥१८॥
18. ananyabhāvāmanuraktacetasaṃ tvayā viyuktāṃ maraṇāya niścitām ,
nayasva māṃ sādhu kuruṣva yācanāṃ na te mayāto gurutā bhaviṣyati.
18. ananyabhāvām anuraktacetasam tvayā
viyuktam maraṇāya niścitām
nayasva mām sādhu kuruṣva yācanām
na te mayā ataḥ gurutā bhaviṣyati
18. ananyabhāvām anuraktacetasam tvayā

nayasva sādhu yācanām kuruṣva
ataḥ mayā te gurutā na bhaviṣyati
18. Take me, whose devotion is to no other, whose mind is attached (to you), and who, separated from you, is resolved on death. Graciously grant my request; no burden will arise for you from me because of this.
तथा ब्रुवाणामपि धर्मवत्सलो न च स्म सीतां नृवरो निनीषति ।
उवाच चैनां बहु संनिवर्तने वने निवासस्य च दुःखितां प्रति ॥१९॥
19. tathā bruvāṇāmapi dharmavatsalo na ca sma sītāṃ nṛvaro ninīṣati ,
uvāca caināṃ bahu saṃnivartane vane nivāsasya ca duḥkhitāṃ prati.
19. tathā bruvāṇām api dharmavatsalaḥ
na ca sma sītām nṛvaraḥ ninīṣati
uvāca ca enām bahu saṃnivartane
vane nivāsasya ca duḥkhitām prati
19. nṛvaraḥ dharmavatsalaḥ tathā bruvāṇām
api sītām ninīṣati na ca sma
enām duḥkhitām saṃnivartane vane
nivāsasya ca prati bahu uvāca ca
19. Even though she (Sita) was speaking thus (insisting on accompanying him), the best among men (Rama), who was devoted to righteousness (dharma), did not wish to take Sita (with him to the forest). Instead, he spoke much to her, who was distressed, urging her to return (home) and explaining the hardships of living in the forest.
