यावत्तु निर्यतस्तस्य रजोरूपमदृश्यत ।
नैवेक्ष्वाकुवरस्तावत् संजहारात्मचक्षुषी ॥१॥
1. yāvattu niryatastasya rajorūpamadṛśyata ,
naivekṣvākuvarastāvat saṃjahārātmacakṣuṣī.

1. As long as the dust-cloud from his departure was visible, the best of the Ikshvakus (Dasharatha) did not withdraw his own eyes, not even then.
यावद् राजा प्रियं पुत्रं पश्यत्यत्यन्तधार्मिकम् ।
तावद्व्यवर्धतेवास्य धरण्यां पुत्रदर्शने ॥२॥
2. yāvad rājā priyaṃ putraṃ paśyatyatyantadhārmikam ,
tāvadvyavardhatevāsya dharaṇyāṃ putradarśane.
2. yāvat rājā priyam putram paśyati atyantadhārmikam
tāvat vyavardhata eva asya dharaṇyām putradarśane

2. As long as the king saw his dear, extremely righteous son, so long did his prosperity indeed increase on earth at the sight of his son.
न पश्यति रजो ऽप्यस्य यदा रामस्य भूमिपः ।
तदार्तश्च विषण्णश्च पपात धरणीतले ॥३॥
3. na paśyati rajo'pyasya yadā rāmasya bhūmipaḥ ,
tadārtaśca viṣaṇṇaśca papāta dharaṇītale.
3. na paśyati rajaḥ api asya yadā rāmasya bhūmipaḥ
tadā ārtaḥ ca viṣaṇṇaḥ ca papāta dharaṇītale
3. yadā bhūmipaḥ rāmasya asya rajaḥ api na paśyati

3. When the king no longer saw even a trace of his Rāma, then, distressed and dejected, he fell to the ground.
तस्य दक्षिणमन्वगात् कौसल्या बाहुमङ्गना ।
वामं चास्यान्वगात् पार्श्वं कैकेयी भरतप्रिया ॥४॥
4. tasya dakṣiṇamanvagāt kausalyā bāhumaṅganā ,
vāmaṃ cāsyānvagāt pārśvaṃ kaikeyī bharatapriyā.
4. tasya dakṣiṇam anvagāt kausalyā bāhum aṅganā
vāmam ca asya anvagāt pārśvam kaikeyī bharatapriyā
4. aṅganā kausalyā tasya dakṣiṇam bāhum anvagāt ca

4. Kausalyā, the woman, supported him by his right arm, and Kaikeyī, dear to Bharata, supported him by his left side.
तां नयेन च संपन्नो धर्मेण निवयेन च ।
उवाच राजा कैकेयीं समीक्ष्य व्यथितेन्द्रियः ॥५॥
5. tāṃ nayena ca saṃpanno dharmeṇa nivayena ca ,
uvāca rājā kaikeyīṃ samīkṣya vyathitendriyaḥ.
5. tām nayena ca saṃpannaḥ dharmeṇa nivayena ca
uvāca rājā kaikeyīm samīkṣya vyathitendriyaḥ
5. nayena ca dharmeṇa ca nivayena saṃpannaḥ rājā

5. The king, endowed with prudence, (dharma) righteousness, and humility, looked at Kaikeyī with troubled senses and spoke to her.
कैकेयि मा ममाङ्गानि स्प्राक्षीस्त्वं दुष्टचारिणी ।
न हि त्वां द्रष्टुमिच्छामि न भार्या न च बान्धवी ॥६॥
6. kaikeyi mā mamāṅgāni sprākṣīstvaṃ duṣṭacāriṇī ,
na hi tvāṃ draṣṭumicchāmi na bhāryā na ca bāndhavī.
6. kaikeyi mā mama aṅgāni sprākṣīḥ tvam duṣṭacāriṇī na
hi tvām draṣṭum icchāmi na bhāryā na ca bāndhavī
6. kaikeyi duṣṭacāriṇī tvam mama aṅgāni mā sprākṣīḥ hi
na tvām draṣṭum icchāmi na bhāryā na ca bāndhavī
6. O Kaikeyī, you wicked woman, do not touch my limbs. I certainly do not wish to see you; you are neither my wife nor my relative.
ये च त्वामुपजीवन्ति नाहं तेषां न ते मम ।
केवलार्थपरां हि त्वां त्यक्तधर्मां त्यजाम्यहम् ॥७॥
7. ye ca tvāmupajīvanti nāhaṃ teṣāṃ na te mama ,
kevalārthaparāṃ hi tvāṃ tyaktadharmāṃ tyajāmyaham.
7. ye ca tvām upajīvanti na aham teṣām na te mama
kevalārthaparām hi tvām tyaktadharmām tyajāmi aham
7. ye ca tvām upajīvanti aham teṣām na te mama na hi
aham kevalārthaparām tyaktadharmām tvām tyajāmi
7. And as for those who depend on you, I do not belong to them, nor do they belong to me. Indeed, I abandon you, who are solely devoted to material gain and have forsaken your intrinsic nature (dharma).
अगृह्णां यच्च ते पाणिमग्निं पर्यणयं च यत् ।
अनुजानामि तत् सर्वमस्मिंल् लोके परत्र च ॥८॥
8. agṛhṇāṃ yacca te pāṇimagniṃ paryaṇayaṃ ca yat ,
anujānāmi tat sarvamasmiṃl loke paratra ca.
8. agṛhṇām yat ca te pāṇim agnim paryaṇayam ca
yat anujānāmi tat sarvam asmin loke paratra ca
8. yat ca te pāṇim agṛhṇām yat ca agnim paryaṇayam
tat sarvam asmin loke ca paratra anujānāmi
8. Whatever hand of yours I took (in marriage), and whatever sacred fire I circumambulated (with you), I renounce all that, both in this world and in the next.
भरतश्चेत् प्रतीतः स्याद् राज्यं प्राप्येदमव्ययम् ।
यन्मे स दद्यात् पित्रर्थं मा मा तद्दत्तमागमत् ॥९॥
9. bharataścet pratītaḥ syād rājyaṃ prāpyedamavyayam ,
yanme sa dadyāt pitrarthaṃ mā mā taddattamāgamat.
9. bharataḥ cet pratītaḥ syāt rājyam prāpya idam avyayam
yat me sa dadyāt pitrartham mā mā tat dattam āgamat
9. cet bharataḥ idam avyayam rājyam prāpya pratītaḥ syāt
sa yat me pitrartham dadyāt tat dattam mā mā āgamat
9. If Bharata becomes pleased after obtaining this imperishable kingdom, then whatever he might offer to me for our ancestors, may that offering never reach me.
अथ रेणुसमुध्वस्तं तमुत्थाप्य नराधिपम् ।
न्यवर्तत तदा देवी कौसल्या शोककर्शिता ॥१०॥
10. atha reṇusamudhvastaṃ tamutthāpya narādhipam ,
nyavartata tadā devī kausalyā śokakarśitā.
10. atha reṇusamudhvastaṃ tam utthāpya narādhipam
nyavartata tadā devī kausalyā śokakarśitā
10. atha tadā śokakarśitā devī kausalyā
reṇusamudhvastaṃ taṃ narādhipam utthāpya nyavartata
10. Then, having lifted up that king, who was covered with dust, Queen Kausalya, emaciated by grief, returned.
हत्वेव ब्राह्मणं कामात् स्पृष्ट्वाग्निमिव पाणिना ।
अन्वतप्यत धर्मात्मा पुत्रं संचिन्त्य तापसं ॥११॥
11. hatveva brāhmaṇaṃ kāmāt spṛṣṭvāgnimiva pāṇinā ,
anvatapyata dharmātmā putraṃ saṃcintya tāpasaṃ.
11. hatvā iva brāhmaṇam kāmāt spṛṣṭvā agnim iva pāṇinā
anvatapyata dharmātmā putram saṃcintya tāpasam
11. dharmātmā tāpasam putram saṃcintya brāhmaṇam kāmāt
hatvā iva pāṇinā agnim iva spṛṣṭvā anvatapyata
11. The virtuous king (dharmātmā), reflecting on his ascetic son, repented as if he had killed a Brahmin (brāhmaṇam) out of desire or touched fire with his hand.
निवृत्यैव निवृत्यैव सीदतो रथवर्त्मसु ।
राज्ञो नातिबभौ रूपं ग्रस्तस्यांशुमतो यथा ॥१२॥
12. nivṛtyaiva nivṛtyaiva sīdato rathavartmasu ,
rājño nātibabhau rūpaṃ grastasyāṃśumato yathā.
12. nivṛtya eva nivṛtya eva sīdataḥ rathavartmasu
rājñaḥ na atibabhau rūpam grastasya aṃśumataḥ yathā
12. rathavartmasu nivṛtya eva nivṛtya eva sīdataḥ
rājñaḥ rūpam grastasya aṃśumataḥ yathā na atibabhau
12. As the king kept turning back, sinking down upon the chariot tracks, his form did not shine brightly, just like the eclipsed sun (aṃśumat).
विललाप च दुःखार्तः प्रियं पुत्रमनुस्मरन् ।
नगरान्तमनुप्राप्तं बुद्ध्वा पुत्रमथाब्रवीत् ॥१३॥
13. vilalāpa ca duḥkhārtaḥ priyaṃ putramanusmaran ,
nagarāntamanuprāptaṃ buddhvā putramathābravīt.
13. vilalāpa ca duḥkhārtaḥ priyam putram anusmaran
nagarāntam anuprāptam buddhvā putram atha abravīt
13. ca duḥkhārtaḥ priyam putram anusmaran vilalāpa.
atha nagarāntam anuprāptam putram buddhvā abravīt
13. And he, afflicted by sorrow, lamented, remembering his dear son. Then, having realized that his son had reached the city limits, he spoke concerning his son.
वाहनानां च मुख्यानां वहतां तं ममात्मजम् ।
पदानि पथि दृश्यन्ते स महात्मा न दृश्यते ॥१४॥
14. vāhanānāṃ ca mukhyānāṃ vahatāṃ taṃ mamātmajam ,
padāni pathi dṛśyante sa mahātmā na dṛśyate.
14. vāhanānām ca mukhyānām vahatām tam mama ātmajam
| padāni pathi dṛśyante saḥ mahātmā na dṛśyate
14. mama ātmajam tam mukhyānām vāhanānām vahatam ca
padāni pathi dṛśyante saḥ mahātmā na dṛśyate
14. The footprints of the chief vehicles that carried my son are visible on the path, but that great soul (ātman) is not seen.
स नूनं क्व चिदेवाद्य वृक्षमूलमुपाश्रितः ।
काष्ठं वा यदि वाश्मानमुपधाय शयिष्यते ॥१५॥
15. sa nūnaṃ kva cidevādya vṛkṣamūlamupāśritaḥ ,
kāṣṭhaṃ vā yadi vāśmānamupadhāya śayiṣyate.
15. saḥ nūnam kva cit eva adya vṛkṣamūlam upāśritaḥ
| kāṣṭham vā yadi vā aśmānam upadhāya śayiṣyate
15. saḥ nūnam adya kva cit eva vṛkṣamūlam upāśritaḥ
kāṣṭham vā yadi vā aśmānam upadhāya śayiṣyate
15. Surely, today he must have taken refuge somewhere at the root of a tree, and he will lie down, using either a log or a stone as a pillow.
उत्थास्यति च मेदिन्याः कृपणः पांशुगुण्ठितः ।
विनिःश्वसन्प्रस्रवणात् करेणूनामिवर्षभः ॥१६॥
16. utthāsyati ca medinyāḥ kṛpaṇaḥ pāṃśuguṇṭhitaḥ ,
viniḥśvasanprasravaṇāt kareṇūnāmivarṣabhaḥ.
16. utthāsyati ca medinyāḥ kṛpaṇaḥ pāṃśuguṇṭhitaḥ
| viniḥśvasan prasravaṇāt kareṇūnām iva ṛṣabhaḥ
16. kṛpaṇaḥ pāṃśuguṇṭhitaḥ medinyāḥ ca utthāsyati
kareṇūnām iva ṛṣabhaḥ prasravaṇāt viniḥśvasan
16. And he will rise from the earth, pitiable and covered in dust, sighing heavily like a bull (ṛṣabha) among female elephants (kareṇū) emerging from a stream.
द्रक्ष्यन्ति नूनं पुरुषा दीर्घबाहुं वनेचराः ।
राममुत्थाय गच्छन्तं लोकनाथमनाथवत् ॥१७॥
17. drakṣyanti nūnaṃ puruṣā dīrghabāhuṃ vanecarāḥ ,
rāmamutthāya gacchantaṃ lokanāthamanāthavat.
17. drakṣyanti nūnam puruṣāḥ dīrghabāhum vanecarāḥ
| rāmam utthāya gacchantam lokanātham anāthavat
17. nūnam vanecarāḥ puruṣāḥ dīrghabāhum lokanātham
rāmam anāthavat utthāya gacchantam drakṣyanti
17. Surely, the forest-dwelling men will see the long-armed Rama, the lord of the world (lokanātha), rising and moving about like one without a protector.
सकामा भव कैकेयि विधवा राज्यमावस ।
न हि तं पुरुषव्याघ्रं विना जीवितुमुत्सहे ॥१८॥
18. sakāmā bhava kaikeyi vidhavā rājyamāvasa ,
na hi taṃ puruṣavyāghraṃ vinā jīvitumutsahe.
18. sakāmā bhava kaikeyi vidhavā rājyam āvasa na
hi tam puruṣavyāghram vinā jīvitum utsahe
18. kaikeyi sakāmā bhava vidhavā rājyam āvasa hi
tam puruṣavyāghram vinā jīvitum na utsahe
18. Kaikeyi, be content with your desires; rule the kingdom as a widow. Indeed, I cannot bear to live without that tiger among men.
इत्येवं विलपन् राजा जनौघेनाभिसंवृतः ।
अपस्नात इवारिष्टं प्रविवेश पुरोत्तमम् ॥१९॥
19. ityevaṃ vilapan rājā janaughenābhisaṃvṛtaḥ ,
apasnāta ivāriṣṭaṃ praviveśa purottamam.
19. iti evam vilapan rājā janaughena abhisaṃvṛtaḥ
apasnātaḥ iva ariṣṭam praviveśa purottamam
19. rājā iti evam vilapan janaughena abhisaṃvṛtaḥ
ariṣṭam apasnātaḥ iva purottamam praviveśa
19. Lamenting in this manner, the king, surrounded by a throng of people, entered the excellent city as one who has just performed a ritual bath for an inauspicious occasion.
शून्यचत्वरवेश्मान्तां संवृतापणदेवताम् ।
क्लान्तदुर्बलदुःखार्तां नात्याकीर्णमहापथाम् ॥२०॥
20. śūnyacatvaraveśmāntāṃ saṃvṛtāpaṇadevatām ,
klāntadurbaladuḥkhārtāṃ nātyākīrṇamahāpathām.
20. śūnyacatvaraveśmāntām saṃvṛtāpaṇadevatām
klāntadurbaladuḥkhārtām na atyākīrṇamahāpathām
20. śūnyacatvaraveśmāntām saṃvṛtāpaṇadevatām

20. It had deserted squares and empty houses, its shops were closed and temples covered (or deserted), and it was weary, weak, and afflicted by sorrow; its main roads were not overly crowded.
तामवेक्ष्य पुरीं सर्वां राममेवानुचिन्तयन् ।
विलपन्प्राविशद् राजा गृहं सूर्य इवाम्बुदम् ॥२१॥
21. tāmavekṣya purīṃ sarvāṃ rāmamevānucintayan ,
vilapanprāviśad rājā gṛhaṃ sūrya ivāmbudam.
21. tām avekṣya purīm sarvām rāmam eva anucintayan
vilapan prāviśat rājā gṛham sūryaḥ iva ambudam
21. rājā tām sarvām purīm avekṣya rāmam eva anucintayan
vilapan gṛham ambudam iva sūryaḥ prāviśat
21. Having surveyed that entire city, and constantly reflecting only on Rama, the king, lamenting, entered his palace like the sun entering a cloud.
महाह्रदमिवाक्षोभ्यं सुपर्णेन हृतोरगम् ।
रामेण रहितं वेश्म वैदेह्या लक्ष्मणेन च ॥२२॥
22. mahāhradamivākṣobhyaṃ suparṇena hṛtoragam ,
rāmeṇa rahitaṃ veśma vaidehyā lakṣmaṇena ca.
22. mahāhradam iva akṣobhyam suparṇena hṛtoragam
rāmeṇa rahitam veśma vaidehyā lakṣmaṇena ca
22. rāmeṇa vaidehyā lakṣmaṇena ca rahitam veśma
suparṇena hṛtoragam mahāhradam iva akṣobhyam
22. The dwelling, forsaken by Rama, Vaidehi (Sita), and Lakshmana, became like a great, tranquil lake from which Suparṇa had carried away its serpents.
कौसल्याया गृहं शीघ्रं राम मातुर्नयन्तु माम् ।
इति ब्रुवन्तं राजानमनयन्द्वारदर्शितः ॥२३॥
23. kausalyāyā gṛhaṃ śīghraṃ rāma māturnayantu mām ,
iti bruvantaṃ rājānamanayandvāradarśitaḥ.
23. kausalyāyāḥ gṛham śīghram rāma mātuḥ nayantu
mām iti bruvantam rājānam anayan dvāradarśitaḥ
23. rāma mātuḥ kausalyāyāḥ gṛham mām śīghram nayantu
iti bruvantam rājānam dvāradarśitaḥ anayan
23. 'Lead me quickly to the dwelling of Kausalya, Rama's mother!' Thus speaking, the doorkeeper led the king away.
ततस्तत्र प्रविष्टस्य कौसल्याया निवेशनम् ।
अधिरुह्यापि शयनं बभूव लुलितं मनः ॥२४॥
24. tatastatra praviṣṭasya kausalyāyā niveśanam ,
adhiruhyāpi śayanaṃ babhūva lulitaṃ manaḥ.
24. tataḥ tatra praviṣṭasya kausalyāyāḥ niveśanam
adhiruhya api śayanam babhūva lulitam manaḥ
24. tataḥ tatra kausalyāyāḥ niveśanam praviṣṭasya (tasya
rājañaḥ) śayanam adhiruhya api manaḥ lulitam babhūva
24. Then, after he (the king) entered Kausalya's dwelling, even upon ascending the bed, his mind became agitated.
तच्च दृष्ट्वा महाराजो भुजमुद्यम्य वीर्यवान् ।
उच्चैः स्वरेण चुक्रोश हा राघव जहासि माम् ॥२५॥
25. tacca dṛṣṭvā mahārājo bhujamudyamya vīryavān ,
uccaiḥ svareṇa cukrośa hā rāghava jahāsi mām.
25. tat ca dṛṣṭvā mahārājaḥ bhujam udyamya vīryavān
uccaiḥ svareṇa cukrośa hā rāghava jahāsi mām
25. ca tat dṛṣṭvā vīryavān mahārājaḥ bhujam udyamya
uccaiḥ svareṇa hā rāghava mām jahāsi iti cukrośa
25. And having seen that, the mighty king, raising his arm, cried out loudly with his voice: 'Alas, Raghava, you abandon me!'
सुखिता बत तं कालं जीविष्यन्ति नरोत्तमाः ।
परिष्वजन्तो ये रामं द्रक्ष्यन्ति पुनरागतम् ॥२६॥
26. sukhitā bata taṃ kālaṃ jīviṣyanti narottamāḥ ,
pariṣvajanto ye rāmaṃ drakṣyanti punarāgatam.
26. sukhitā bata tam kālam jīviṣyanti narottamāḥ
pariṣvajantaḥ ye rāmam drakṣyanti punaḥ āgatam
26. ye narottamāḥ punaḥ āgatam rāmam pariṣvajantaḥ
drakṣyanti tam kālam sukhitāḥ jīviṣyanti bata
26. Oh, how fortunate and happy will those best of men be who will live to see that time when they will embrace Rama (rāma) upon his return.
न त्वां पश्यामि कौसल्ये साधु मां पाणिना स्पृश ।
रामं मे ऽनुगता दृष्टिरद्यापि न निवर्तते ॥२७॥
27. na tvāṃ paśyāmi kausalye sādhu māṃ pāṇinā spṛśa ,
rāmaṃ me'nugatā dṛṣṭiradyāpi na nivartate.
27. na tvām paśyāmi kausalye sādhu mām pāṇinā spṛśa
rāmam me anugatā dṛṣṭiḥ adya api na nivartate
27. kausalye tvām na paśyāmi sādhu pāṇinā mām spṛśa
me dṛṣṭiḥ rāmam anugatā adya api na nivartate
27. O Kausalya, I cannot see you; please touch me with your hand. My gaze has followed Rama (rāma), and it does not return even now.
तं राममेवानुविचिन्तयन्तं समीक्ष्य देवी शयने नरेन्द्रम् ।
उपोपविश्याधिकमार्तरूपा विनिःश्वसन्ती विललाप कृच्छ्रं ॥२८॥
28. taṃ rāmamevānuvicintayantaṃ samīkṣya devī śayane narendram ,
upopaviśyādhikamārtarūpā viniḥśvasantī vilalāpa kṛcchraṃ.
28. tam rāmam eva anuvicintayantam
samīkṣya devī śayane narendram
upopaviśya adhikam ārtarūpā
viniḥśvasantī vilalāpa kṛcchram
28. devī śayane tam rāmam eva
anuvicintayantam narendram samīkṣya

28. Having observed the king on his bed, intently meditating only on Rama (rāma), the queen, appearing exceedingly distressed, sat close by, sighing deeply, and lamented with great difficulty.
