ततः स मध्यं गतमंशुमन्तं ज्योत्स्नावितानं महदुद्वमन्तम् ।

1. Then, the intelligent one (dhīmān) Rama saw the radiant, luminous moon in the sky. It had reached the middle (of the sky), emitting a vast canopy of moonlight, appearing like an intoxicated bull wandering in a cowshed.
लोकस्य पापानि विनाशयन्तं महोदधिं चापि समेधयन्तम् ।
भूतानि सर्वाणि विराजयन्तं ददर्श शीतांशुमथाभियान्तम् ॥२॥
2. lokasya pāpāni vināśayantaṃ mahodadhiṃ cāpi samedhayantam ,
bhūtāni sarvāṇi virājayantaṃ dadarśa śītāṃśumathābhiyāntam.

2. Then, (Rama) saw the cool-rayed moon (śītāṃśu) approaching, destroying the sins of the world, swelling the great ocean, and illuminating all beings.
या भाति लक्ष्मीर्भुवि मन्दरस्था तथा प्रदोषेषु च सागरस्था ।
तथैव तोयेषु च पुष्करस्था रराज सा चारुनिशाकरस्था ॥३॥
3. yā bhāti lakṣmīrbhuvi mandarasthā tathā pradoṣeṣu ca sāgarasthā ,
tathaiva toyeṣu ca puṣkarasthā rarāja sā cāruniśākarasthā.

3. The brilliance (lakṣmī) that appears on earth as if resting on Mount Mandara, and similarly in the evenings as if resting in the ocean, and likewise in the waters as if resting on a lotus – that same brilliance was resplendent in the beautiful moon.
हंसो यथा राजतपञ्जुरस्थः सिंहो यथा मन्दरकन्दरस्थः ।
वीरो यथा गर्वितकुञ्जरस्थश्चन्द्रो ऽपि बभ्राज तथाम्बरस्थः ॥४॥
4. haṃso yathā rājatapañjurasthaḥ siṃho yathā mandarakandarasthaḥ ,
vīro yathā garvitakuñjarasthaścandro'pi babhrāja tathāmbarasthaḥ.

4. Just as a swan appears glorious in a silver cage, just as a lion in a cave of Mount Mandara, and just as a hero on a proud elephant, so too did the moon shine resplendently, situated in the sky.
स्थितः ककुद्मानिव तीक्ष्णशृङ्गो महाचलः श्वेत इवोच्चशृङ्गः ।
हस्तीव जाम्बूनदबद्धशृङ्गो विभाति चन्द्रः परिपूर्णशृङ्गः ॥५॥
5. sthitaḥ kakudmāniva tīkṣṇaśṛṅgo mahācalaḥ śveta ivoccaśṛṅgaḥ ,
hastīva jāmbūnadabaddhaśṛṅgo vibhāti candraḥ paripūrṇaśṛṅgaḥ.

śvetaḥ uccaśṛṅgaḥ mahācalaḥ iva,
jāmbūnadabaddhaśṛṅgaḥ hastī iva vibhāti
5. The moon, with its full disc, shines brightly, appearing like a sharp-horned, humped bull, or like a great white mountain with lofty peaks, or like an elephant whose tusks are adorned with gold.
प्रकाशचन्द्रोदयनष्टदोषः प्रवृद्धरक्षः पिशिताशदोषः ।
रामाभिरामेरितचित्तदोषः स्वर्गप्रकाशो भगवान्प्रदोषः ॥६॥
6. prakāśacandrodayanaṣṭadoṣaḥ pravṛddharakṣaḥ piśitāśadoṣaḥ ,
rāmābhirāmeritacittadoṣaḥ svargaprakāśo bhagavānpradoṣaḥ.

6. The divine evening (pradoṣa) shines with a heavenly glow. It is a time when imperfections are dispelled by the rising moonlight, but also when the menace of increasing demons and flesh-eaters thrives, and mental agitation is stirred by captivating delights.
तन्त्री स्वनाः कर्णसुखाः प्रवृत्ताः स्वपन्ति नार्यः पतिभिः सुवृत्ताः ।
नक्तंचराश्चापि तथा प्रवृत्ता विहर्तुमत्यद्भुतरौद्रवृत्ताः ॥७॥
7. tantrī svanāḥ karṇasukhāḥ pravṛttāḥ svapanti nāryaḥ patibhiḥ suvṛttāḥ ,
naktaṃcarāścāpi tathā pravṛttā vihartumatyadbhutaraudravṛttāḥ.

7. The pleasing sounds of stringed instruments have begun. Chaste women are sleeping with their husbands. And similarly, night-wanderers, whose conduct is exceedingly wondrous and terrifying, have also set out to roam.
मत्तप्रमत्तानि समाकुलानि रथाश्वभद्रासनसंकुलानि ।
वीरश्रिया चापि समाकुलानि ददर्श धीमान् स कपिः कुलानि ॥८॥
8. mattapramattāni samākulāni rathāśvabhadrāsanasaṃkulāni ,
vīraśriyā cāpi samākulāni dadarśa dhīmān sa kapiḥ kulāni.

8. That wise monkey (Hanuman) observed the noble households (or communities) bustling with intoxicated and heedless individuals, filled with chariots, horses, and magnificent seats, and also vibrant with heroic glory.
परस्परं चाधिकमाक्षिपन्ति भुजांश्च पीनानधिविक्षिपन्ति ।
मत्तप्रलापानधिविक्षिपन्ति मत्तानि चान्योन्यमधिक्षिपन्ति ॥९॥
9. parasparaṃ cādhikamākṣipanti bhujāṃśca pīnānadhivikṣipanti ,
mattapralāpānadhivikṣipanti mattāni cānyonyamadhikṣipanti.

9. They greatly insult each other, and they wildly swing their thick arms. They utter the ravings of the intoxicated, and the drunken ones abuse one another.
रक्षांसि वक्षांसि च विक्षिपन्ति गात्राणि कान्तासु च विक्षिपन्ति ।
ददर्श कान्ताश्च समालपन्ति तथापरास्तत्र पुनः स्वपन्ति ॥१०॥
10. rakṣāṃsi vakṣāṃsi ca vikṣipanti gātrāṇi kāntāsu ca vikṣipanti ,
dadarśa kāntāśca samālapanti tathāparāstatra punaḥ svapanti.

10. He saw the rākṣasas (rakṣas) heaving their chests and limbs upon their beloved women. And he also saw other women conversing, while still others were sleeping there.
महागजैश्चापि तथा नदद्भिः सूपूजितैश्चापि तथा सुसद्भिः ।
रराज वीरैश्च विनिःश्वसद्भिर्ह्रदो भुजङ्गैरिव निःश्वसद्भिः ॥११॥
11. mahāgajaiścāpi tathā nadadbhiḥ sūpūjitaiścāpi tathā susadbhiḥ ,
rarāja vīraiśca viniḥśvasadbhirhrado bhujaṅgairiva niḥśvasadbhiḥ.
11. mahāgajaiḥ ca api tathā nadadbhiḥ
sūpūjitaiḥ ca api tathā susadbhiḥ
rarāja vīraiḥ ca viniḥśvasadbhiḥ
hradaḥ bhujaṅgaiḥ iva niḥśvasadbhiḥ
11. tat rarāja mahāgajaiḥ nadadbhiḥ ca api tathā sūpūjitaiḥ susadbhiḥ ca api tathā vīraiḥ viniḥśvasadbhiḥ ca,
iva hradaḥ bhujaṅgaiḥ niḥśvasadbhiḥ
11. It shone splendidly, adorned by great, roaring elephants and by highly respected, noble persons. It was magnificent with heroes sighing deeply, just like a lake with hissing snakes.
बुद्धिप्रधानान् रुचिराभिधानान् संश्रद्दधानाञ्जगतः प्रधानान् ।
नानाविधानान् रुचिराभिधानान्ददर्श तस्यां पुरि यातुधानान् ॥१२॥
12. buddhipradhānān rucirābhidhānān saṃśraddadhānāñjagataḥ pradhānān ,
nānāvidhānān rucirābhidhānāndadarśa tasyāṃ puri yātudhānān.

12. In that city, he saw the rākṣasas (yātudhāna) who were foremost in intellect, possessed beautiful names, were deeply faithful (śraddhā), prominent in the world, and of various kinds, all with charming names.
ननन्द दृष्ट्वा स च तान् सुरूपान्नानागुणानात्मगुणानुरूपान् ।
विद्योतमानान् स च तान् सुरूपान्ददर्श कांश्चिच्च पुनर्विरूपान् ॥१३॥
13. nananda dṛṣṭvā sa ca tān surūpānnānāguṇānātmaguṇānurūpān ,
vidyotamānān sa ca tān surūpāndadarśa kāṃścicca punarvirūpān.

13. He rejoiced upon seeing those beautiful ones, who possessed various excellent qualities reflecting his own intrinsic nature (ātman), and who were shining brightly. He also observed some who were deformed.
ततो वरार्हाः सुविशुद्धभावास्तेषां स्त्रियस्तत्र महानुभावाः ।
प्रियेषु पानेषु च सक्तभावा ददर्श तारा इव सुप्रभावाः ॥१४॥
14. tato varārhāḥ suviśuddhabhāvāsteṣāṃ striyastatra mahānubhāvāḥ ,
priyeṣu pāneṣu ca saktabhāvā dadarśa tārā iva suprabhāvāḥ.
14. tataḥ varārhāḥ suviśuddhabhāvāḥ
teṣām striyaḥ tatra mahānubhāvāḥ
priyeṣu pāneṣu ca saktabhāvāḥ
dadarśa tārāḥ iva suprabhāvāḥ
14. Thereafter, he saw their noble women, who were worthy of honor, of very pure essence, and of great renown. Their minds were intent on their beloved companions and on drinks, and they shone like brilliant stars.
श्रिया ज्वलन्तीस्त्रपयोपगूढा निशीथकाले रमणोपगूढाः ।
ददर्श काश्चित् प्रमदोपगूढा यथा विहंगाः कुसुमोपगूडाः ॥१५॥
15. śriyā jvalantīstrapayopagūḍhā niśīthakāle ramaṇopagūḍhāḥ ,
dadarśa kāścit pramadopagūḍhā yathā vihaṃgāḥ kusumopagūḍāḥ.

15. He observed some women shining with radiance, veiled by modesty, and at midnight, intimately embraced by their lovers. He also saw some women who were immersed in delight, resembling birds concealed among blossoms.
अन्याः पुनर्हर्म्यतलोपविष्टास्तत्र प्रियाङ्केषु सुखोपविष्टाः ।
भर्तुः प्रिया धर्मपरा निविष्टा ददर्श धीमान्मनदाभिविष्टाः ॥१६॥
16. anyāḥ punarharmyatalopaviṣṭāstatra priyāṅkeṣu sukhopaviṣṭāḥ ,
bhartuḥ priyā dharmaparā niviṣṭā dadarśa dhīmānmanadābhiviṣṭāḥ.
16. anyāḥ punar harmyatalopaviṣṭāḥ
tatra priyāṅkeṣu sukhopaviṣṭāḥ
bhartuḥ priyāḥ dharmaparāḥ niviṣṭāḥ
dadarśa dhīmān manadābhiviṣṭāḥ
16. The wise one then saw other women seated there on palace terraces, comfortably settled in their beloveds' laps. These dear women, devoted to the natural law (dharma), were deeply absorbed in delight.
अप्रावृताः काञ्चनराजिवर्णाः काश्चित् परार्ध्यास्तपनीयवर्णाः ।
पुनश्च काश्चिच्छशलक्ष्मवर्णाः कान्तप्रहीणा रुचिराङ्गवर्णाः ॥१७॥
17. aprāvṛtāḥ kāñcanarājivarṇāḥ kāścit parārdhyāstapanīyavarṇāḥ ,
punaśca kāścicchaśalakṣmavarṇāḥ kāntaprahīṇā rucirāṅgavarṇāḥ.

cit parārdhyāḥ tapanīyavarṇāḥ
punaḥ ca kāḥ cit śaśalakṣmavarṇāḥ

punaḥ ca kāḥ cit kāntaprahīṇāḥ śaśalakṣmavarṇāḥ rucirāṅgavarṇāḥ (āsan).
17. Some women were uncovered and had complexions like streaks of gold. Others had the color of supremely precious refined gold. And still others, separated from their beloveds, had complexions like the moon's mark and displayed beautiful bodily hues.
ततः प्रियान्प्राप्य मनोऽभिरामान् सुप्रीतियुक्ताः प्रसमीक्ष्य रामाः ।
गृहेषु हृष्टाः परमाभिरामा हरिप्रवीरः स ददर्श रामाः ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ priyānprāpya mano'bhirāmān suprītiyuktāḥ prasamīkṣya rāmāḥ ,
gṛheṣu hṛṣṭāḥ paramābhirāmā haripravīraḥ sa dadarśa rāmāḥ.

suprītiyuktāḥ prasamīkṣya
rāmāḥ gṛheṣu hṛṣṭāḥ paramābhirāmāḥ

18. tataḥ rāmāḥ manaḥ abhirāmān priyān prāpya suprītiyuktāḥ prasamīkṣya gṛheṣu hṛṣṭāḥ paramābhirāmāḥ (ca babhūvuḥ).

18. Then, having reunited with their beloveds, who were pleasing to the mind, the women, filled with great affection, observed them. These greatly delighted and supremely charming women were in their homes. That foremost hero among monkeys (Hanuman) saw these women.
चन्द्रप्रकाशाश्च हि वक्त्रमाला वक्राक्षिपक्ष्माश्च सुनेत्रमालाः ।
विभूषणानां च ददर्श मालाः शतह्रदानामिव चारुमालाः ॥१९॥
19. candraprakāśāśca hi vaktramālā vakrākṣipakṣmāśca sunetramālāḥ ,
vibhūṣaṇānāṃ ca dadarśa mālāḥ śatahradānāmiva cārumālāḥ.

vakrākṣipakṣmāḥ ca sunetramālāḥ
vibhūṣaṇānām ca dadarśa

19. And indeed, he saw series of faces shining like the moon, and series of beautiful eyes with curved eyelashes. He also saw strings of ornaments, which were like beautiful garlands of lightning flashes.
न त्वेव सीतां परमाभिजातां पथि स्थिते राजकुले प्रजाताम् ।
लतां प्रफुल्लामिव साधुजातां ददर्श तन्वीं मनसाभिजाताम् ॥२०॥
20. na tveva sītāṃ paramābhijātāṃ pathi sthite rājakule prajātām ,
latāṃ praphullāmiva sādhujātāṃ dadarśa tanvīṃ manasābhijātām.

pathi sthite rājakule prajātām
latām praphullām iva sādhujātām
dadarśa tanvīm manasābhijātām
20. tu eva na dadarśa sītām paramābhijātām rājakule prajātām pathi sthite (satyām).
(saḥ na dadarśa tāṃ) tanvīm manasābhijātām,
praphullām sādhujātām latām iva (sthitaām).
20. But he certainly did not see Sītā, the highly noble lady, born into a royal lineage, who was following the path (of righteousness). He did not see that slender woman, intrinsically noble in spirit, resembling a beautifully grown, fully bloomed creeper.
सनातने वर्त्मनि संनिविष्टां रामेक्षणीं तां मदनाभिविष्टाम् ।
भर्तुर्मनः श्रीमदनुप्रविष्टां स्त्रीभ्यो वराभ्यश्च सदा विशिष्टाम् ॥२१॥
21. sanātane vartmani saṃniviṣṭāṃ rāmekṣaṇīṃ tāṃ madanābhiviṣṭām ,
bharturmanaḥ śrīmadanupraviṣṭāṃ strībhyo varābhyaśca sadā viśiṣṭām.

21. Her, who is established in the eternal path (dharma), whose eyes are fixed on Rāma, overcome by love (madana), who has deeply entered the glorious mind of her husband, and who is always superior even to the most excellent women.
उष्णार्दितां सानुसृतास्रकण्ठीं पुरा वरार्होत्तमनिष्ककण्ठीम् ।
सुजातपक्ष्मामभिरक्तकण्ठीं वने प्रवृत्तामिव नीलकण्ठीम् ॥२२॥
22. uṣṇārditāṃ sānusṛtāsrakaṇṭhīṃ purā varārhottamaniṣkakaṇṭhīm ,
sujātapakṣmāmabhiraktakaṇṭhīṃ vane pravṛttāmiva nīlakaṇṭhīm.

purā varārhotammaniṣkakaṇṭhīm
sujātapakṣmām abhiraktakaṇṭhīm

22. Afflicted by the heat, with a throat wet from constantly flowing tears, whose neck was formerly adorned with a precious, excellent necklace; with beautiful eyelashes, whose throat is now reddened (by tears), resembling a peahen (nīlakaṇṭhī) residing in the forest.
अव्यक्तलेखामिव चन्द्रलेखां पांसुप्रदिग्धामिव हेमलेखाम् ।
क्षतप्ररूढामिव बाणलेखां वायुप्रभिन्नामिव मेघलेखाम् ॥२३॥

23. (She appeared) like an indistinct line or a faded crescent moon; like a streak of gold smeared with dust; like a line of arrows (whose marks are) overgrown with scars; or like a line of clouds scattered by the wind.
सीतामपश्यन्मनुजेश्वरस्य रामस्य पत्नीं वदतां वरस्य ।
बभूव दुःखाभिहतश्चिरस्य प्लवंगमो मन्द इवाचिरस्य ॥२४॥
24. sītāmapaśyanmanujeśvarasya rāmasya patnīṃ vadatāṃ varasya ,
babhūva duḥkhābhihataścirasya plavaṃgamo manda ivācirasya.

24. Not seeing Sītā, the wife of Rāma, the lord of men and the best of speakers, the monkey (plavaṃgama) became overwhelmed by sorrow for a long time, appearing sluggish as if for a brief period.
