तासां विलपमानानां तथा राक्षसयोषिताम् ।
ज्येष्ठा पत्नी प्रिया दीना भर्तारं समुदैक्षत ॥१॥
1. tāsāṃ vilapamānānāṃ tathā rākṣasayoṣitām ,

1. Among those lamenting demonesses, his eldest, beloved, and distressed wife gazed upon her husband.
दशग्रीवं हतं दृष्ट्वा रामेणाचिन्त्यकर्मणा ।
पतिं मन्दोदरी तत्र कृपणा पर्यदेवयत् ॥२॥
2. daśagrīvaṃ hataṃ dṛṣṭvā rāmeṇācintyakarmaṇā ,
patiṃ mandodarī tatra kṛpaṇā paryadevayat.
2. daśagrīvam hatam dṛṣṭvā rāmeṇa acintya-karmaṇā
| patim mandodarī tatra kṛpaṇā paryadevayat

2. Upon seeing Daśagrīva, her husband, slain there by Rāma, whose deeds are inconceivable, the pitiable Mandodarī lamented.
ननु नाम महाबाहो तव वैश्रवणानुज ।
क्रुद्धस्य प्रमुखे स्थातुं त्रस्यत्यपि पुरंदरः ॥३॥
3. nanu nāma mahābāho tava vaiśravaṇānuja ,
kruddhasya pramukhe sthātuṃ trasyatyapi puraṃdaraḥ.
3. nanu nāma mahābāho tava vaiśravaṇa-anuja |
kruddhasya pramukhe sthātum trasyati api purandaraḥ
3. nanu nāma mahābāho tava vaiśravaṇa-anuja!
kruddhasya pramukhe sthātum purandaraḥ api trasyati
3. Indeed, O mighty-armed one, you who are the younger brother of Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera)! Even Purandara (Indra) used to tremble to stand before you when you were enraged.
ऋषयश्च महीदेवा गन्धर्वाश्च यशस्विनः ।
ननु नाम तवोद्वेगाच्चारणाश्च दिशो गताः ॥४॥
4. ṛṣayaśca mahīdevā gandharvāśca yaśasvinaḥ ,
nanu nāma tavodvegāccāraṇāśca diśo gatāḥ.
4. ṛṣayaḥ ca mahīdevāḥ gandharvāḥ ca yaśasvinaḥ |
nanu nāma tava udvegāt cāraṇāḥ ca diśaḥ gatāḥ

gandharvāḥ ca cāraṇāḥ ca tava udvegāt diśaḥ gatāḥ
4. Indeed, sages, great brahmins, and glorious gandharvas, and charaṇas too, fled in all directions because of the terror you caused.
स त्वं मानुषमात्रेण रामेण युधि निर्जितः ।
न व्यपत्रपसे राजन् किमिदं राक्षसर्षभ ॥५॥
5. sa tvaṃ mānuṣamātreṇa rāmeṇa yudhi nirjitaḥ ,
na vyapatrapase rājan kimidaṃ rākṣasarṣabha.
5. sa tvam mānuṣamātreṇa rāmeṇa yudhi nirjitaḥ
na vyapatrapase rājan kim idam rākṣasarṣabha
5. rājan rākṣasarṣabha sa tvam mānuṣamātreṇa

5. O king, O chief among rākṣasas, you, having been defeated in battle by a mere human, Rama, are you not ashamed of this? What is this?
कथं त्रैलोक्यमाक्रम्य श्रिया वीर्येण चान्वितम् ।
अविषह्यं जघान त्वां मानुषो वनगोचरः ॥६॥
6. kathaṃ trailokyamākramya śriyā vīryeṇa cānvitam ,
aviṣahyaṃ jaghāna tvāṃ mānuṣo vanagocaraḥ.
6. katham trailokyam ākramya śriyā vīryeṇa ca
anvitam avisahyam jaghāna tvām mānuṣaḥ vanagocaraḥ
6. katham mānuṣaḥ vanagocaraḥ trailokyam ākramya
śriyā vīryeṇa ca anvitam avisahyam tvām jaghāna
6. How could a human, a forest-dweller, have killed you, who were irresistible, having overwhelmed the three worlds and being endowed with splendor and valor?
मानुषाणामविषये चरतः कामरूपिणः ।
विनाशस्तव रामेण संयुगे नोपपद्यते ॥७॥
7. mānuṣāṇāmaviṣaye carataḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ ,
vināśastava rāmeṇa saṃyuge nopapadyate.
7. mānuṣāṇām aviṣaye carataḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ
vināśaḥ tava rāmeṇa saṃyuge na upapadyate
7. mānuṣāṇām aviṣaye carataḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ
tava vināśaḥ rāmeṇa saṃyuge na upapadyate
7. It is not justifiable that you, who move in realms beyond the reach of humans and can assume any form at will, were destroyed by Rama in battle.
न चैतत् कर्म रामस्य श्रद्दधामि चमूमुखे ।
सर्वतः समुपेतस्य तव तेनाभिमर्शनम् ॥८॥
8. na caitat karma rāmasya śraddadhāmi camūmukhe ,
sarvataḥ samupetasya tava tenābhimarśanam.
8. na ca etat karma rāmasya śraddadhāmi camūmukhe
sarvataḥ samupetasya tava tena abhimarśanam
8. ca etat rāmasya karma na śraddadhāmi,
tena sarvataḥ samupetasya tava camūmukhe abhimarśanam
8. And I do not believe this deed (karma) of Rama: that he could have attacked you, who were fully endowed with all resources, at the forefront of the army.
इन्द्रियाणि पुरा जित्वा जितं त्रिभुवणं त्वया ।
स्मरद्भिरिव तद्वैरमिन्द्रियैरेव निर्जितः ॥९॥
9. indriyāṇi purā jitvā jitaṃ tribhuvaṇaṃ tvayā ,
smaradbhiriva tadvairamindriyaireva nirjitaḥ.
9. indriyāṇi purā jitvā jitam tribhuvaṇam tvayā
smaradbhiḥ iva tat vairam indriyaiḥ eva nirjitaḥ
9. tvayā purā indriyāṇi jitvā tribhuvaṇam jitam
tat vairam smaradbhiḥ iva indriyaiḥ eva nirjitaḥ
9. Previously, having conquered your senses, the three worlds were also conquered by you. Now, however, as if remembering that past enmity, you have been defeated by those very same senses.
अथ वा रामरूपेण वासवः स्वयमागतः ।
मायां तव विनाशाय विधायाप्रतितर्किताम् ॥१०॥
10. atha vā rāmarūpeṇa vāsavaḥ svayamāgataḥ ,
māyāṃ tava vināśāya vidhāyāpratitarkitām.
10. atha vā rāmarūpeṇa vāsavaḥ svayam āgataḥ
māyām tava vināśāya vidhāya apratitarkitām
10. atha vā vāsavaḥ svayam rāmarūpeṇa āgataḥ
tava vināśāya apratitarkitām māyām vidhāya
10. Or perhaps Indra himself has arrived in the form of Rāma, having created an unforeseen deceptive power (māyā) for your destruction.
यदैव हि जनस्थाने राक्षसैर्बहुभिर्वृतः ।
खरस्तव हतो भ्राता तदैवासौ न मानुषः ॥११॥
11. yadaiva hi janasthāne rākṣasairbahubhirvṛtaḥ ,
kharastava hato bhrātā tadaivāsau na mānuṣaḥ.
11. yadā eva hi janasthāne rākṣasaiḥ bahubhiḥ vṛtaḥ
kharaḥ tava hataḥ bhrātā tadā eva asau na mānuṣaḥ
11. hi yadā eva janasthāne bahubhiḥ rākṣasaiḥ vṛtaḥ tava bhrātā kharaḥ hataḥ,
tadā eva asau na mānuṣaḥ
11. Indeed, the moment your brother Khara, surrounded by numerous demons, was killed in Janasthāna, it became clear that he (Rāma) was not a human.
यदैव नगरीं लङ्कां दुष्प्रवेषां सुरैरपि ।
प्रविष्टो हनुमान् वीर्यात्तदैव व्यथिता वयम् ॥१२॥
12. yadaiva nagarīṃ laṅkāṃ duṣpraveṣāṃ surairapi ,
praviṣṭo hanumān vīryāttadaiva vyathitā vayam.
12. yadā eva nagarīm laṅkām duṣpraveṣām suraiḥ api
praviṣṭaḥ hanumān vīryāt tadā eva vyathitāḥ vayam
12. yadā eva hanumān vīryāt suraiḥ api duṣpraveṣām nagarīm laṅkām praviṣṭaḥ,
tadā eva vayam vyathitāḥ
12. The very moment Hanumān, by his prowess, entered the city of Laṅkā, which is difficult for even the gods to penetrate, we immediately became distressed.
क्रियतामविरोधश्च राघवेणेति यन्मया ।
उच्यमानो न गृह्णासि तस्येयं व्युष्टिरागता ॥१३॥
13. kriyatāmavirodhaśca rāghaveṇeti yanmayā ,
ucyamāno na gṛhṇāsi tasyeyaṃ vyuṣṭirāgatā.
13. kriyatām avirodhaḥ ca rāghaveṇa iti yat mayā
ucyamānaḥ na gṛhṇāsi tasya iyam vyuṣṭiḥ āgatā
13. yat mayā ucyamānaḥ rāghaveṇa avirodhaḥ ca
kriyatām iti na gṛhṇāsi tasya iyam vyuṣṭiḥ āgatā
13. You did not accept what I repeatedly told you, which was to make peace (avirodha) with Rāghava. This consequence of that [refusal] has now arrived.
अकस्माच्चाभिकामो ऽसि सीतां राक्षसपुंगव ।
ऐश्वर्यस्य विनाशाय देहस्य स्वजनस्य च ॥१४॥
14. akasmāccābhikāmo'si sītāṃ rākṣasapuṃgava ,
aiśvaryasya vināśāya dehasya svajanasya ca.
14. akasmāt ca abhikāmaḥ asi sītām rākṣasapuṅgava
aiśvaryasya vināśāya dehasya svajanasya ca
14. rākṣasapuṅgava akasmāt ca sītām abhikāmaḥ asi
aiśvaryasya dehasya svajanasya ca vināśāya
14. And, O chief among the rākṣasas, you have unexpectedly become desirous of Sītā, [which will lead] to the destruction of your sovereignty (aiśvarya), your body, and your own people.
अरुन्धत्या विशिष्टां तां रोहिण्याश्चापि दुर्मते ।
सीतां धर्षयता मान्यां त्वया ह्यसदृशं कृतम् ॥१५॥
15. arundhatyā viśiṣṭāṃ tāṃ rohiṇyāścāpi durmate ,
sītāṃ dharṣayatā mānyāṃ tvayā hyasadṛśaṃ kṛtam.
15. arundhatyā viśiṣṭām tām rohiṇyāḥ ca api durmate
sītām dharṣayatā mānyām tvayā hi asadṛśam kṛtam
15. durmate arundhatyā rohiṇyāḥ ca api viśiṣṭām mānyām
tām sītām dharṣayatā tvayā hi asadṛśam kṛtam
15. O evil-minded one, by violating that venerable Sītā, who is superior even to Arundhatī and Rohiṇī, you have indeed done something unbefitting.
न कुलेन न रूपेण न दाक्षिण्येन मैथिली ।
मयाधिका वा तुल्या वा त्वं तु मोहान्न बुध्यसे ॥१६॥
16. na kulena na rūpeṇa na dākṣiṇyena maithilī ,
mayādhikā vā tulyā vā tvaṃ tu mohānna budhyase.
16. na kulena na rūpeṇa na dākṣiṇyena maithilī mayā
adhikā vā tulyā vā tvam tu mohāt na budhyase
16. maithilī na kulena na rūpeṇa na dākṣiṇyena mayā
adhikā vā tulyā vā tvam tu mohāt na budhyase
16. Maithilī (Sītā) is neither superior to me nor even equal to me in terms of lineage, beauty, or grace. But you, due to delusion (moha), do not understand this.
सर्वथा सर्वभूतानां नास्ति मृत्युरलक्षणः ।
तव तावदयं मृत्युर्मैथिलीकृतलक्षणः ॥१७॥
17. sarvathā sarvabhūtānāṃ nāsti mṛtyuralakṣaṇaḥ ,
tava tāvadayaṃ mṛtyurmaithilīkṛtalakṣaṇaḥ.
17. sarvathā sarvabhūtānām na asti mṛtyuḥ alakṣaṇaḥ
tava tāvat ayam mṛtyuḥ maithilīkṛtalakṣaṇaḥ
17. sarvathā sarvabhūtānām alakṣaṇaḥ mṛtyuḥ na asti
tava ayam mṛtyuḥ tāvat maithilīkṛtalakṣaṇaḥ
17. There is no death for any being that lacks a specific cause. However, this particular death of yours is certainly marked and brought about by Maithilī.
मैथिली सह रामेण विशोका विहरिष्यति ।
अल्पपुण्या त्वहं घोरे पतिता शोकसागरे ॥१८॥
18. maithilī saha rāmeṇa viśokā vihariṣyati ,
alpapuṇyā tvahaṃ ghore patitā śokasāgare.
18. maithilī saha rāmeṇa viśokā vihariṣyati
alpapuṇyā tu aham ghore patitā śokasāgare
18. maithilī rāmeṇa saha viśokā vihariṣyati
tu aham alpapuṇyā ghore śokasāgare patitā
18. Maithilī, free from sorrow, will enjoy herself with Rāma. But I, having little merit, have fallen into a terrible ocean of grief.
कैलासे मन्दरे मेरौ तथा चैत्ररथे वने ।
देवोद्यानेषु सर्वेषु विहृत्य सहिता त्वया ॥१९॥
19. kailāse mandare merau tathā caitrarathe vane ,
devodyāneṣu sarveṣu vihṛtya sahitā tvayā.
19. kailāse mandare merau tathā caitrarathe vane
devodyāneṣu sarveṣu vihṛtya sahitā tvayā
19. tvayā sahitā kailāse mandare merau tathā
caitrarathe vane sarveṣu devodyāneṣu vihṛtya
19. Having sported with you in all the divine gardens on Kailāsa, Mandara, Meru, and similarly in the Caitraratha forest...
विमानेनानुरूपेण या याम्यतुलया श्रिया ।
पश्यन्ती विविधान्देशांस्तांस्तांश्चित्रस्रगम्बरा ।
भ्रंशिता कामभोगेभ्यः सास्मि वीरवधात्तव ॥२०॥
20. vimānenānurūpeṇa yā yāmyatulayā śriyā ,
paśyantī vividhāndeśāṃstāṃstāṃścitrasragambarā ,
bhraṃśitā kāmabhogebhyaḥ sāsmi vīravadhāttava.
20. vimānena anurūpeṇa yā yāmi atulayā
śriyā paśyantī vividhān deśān tān
tān ca citrasragambarā bhraṃśitā
kāmabhogebhyaḥ sā asmi vīravadhāt tava
20. yā anurūpeṇa vimānena atulayā śriyā
vividhān deśān tān tān ca paśyantī
citrasragambarā yāmi sā asmi tava
vīravadhāt kāmabhogebhyaḥ bhraṃśitā
20. I, who used to travel by a suitable aircraft with incomparable splendor, observing various lands, adorned with diverse garlands and garments, am now deprived of all desired enjoyments due to your slaying of a hero.
सत्यवाक् स महाभागो देवरो मे यदब्रवीत् ।
अयं राक्षसमुख्यानां विनाशः पर्युपस्थितः ॥२१॥
21. satyavāk sa mahābhāgo devaro me yadabravīt ,
ayaṃ rākṣasamukhyānāṃ vināśaḥ paryupasthitaḥ.
21. satyavāk sa mahābhāgaḥ devaraḥ me yat abravīt
ayam rākṣasamukhyānām vināśaḥ paryupasthitaḥ
21. me satyavāk sa mahābhāgaḥ devaraḥ yat abravīt
ayam rākṣasamukhyānām vināśaḥ paryupasthitaḥ
21. That truthful and glorious brother-in-law of mine said that the destruction of these chief rākṣasas is imminent.
कामक्रोधसमुत्थेन व्यसनेन प्रसङ्गिना ।
त्वया कृतमिदं सर्वमनाथं रक्षसां कुलम् ॥२२॥
22. kāmakrodhasamutthena vyasanena prasaṅginā ,
tvayā kṛtamidaṃ sarvamanāthaṃ rakṣasāṃ kulam.
22. kāmakrodhasamutthena vyasanena prasaṅginā
tvayā kṛtam idam sarvam anātham rakṣasām kulam
22. kāmakrodhasamutthena prasaṅginā vyasanena
tvayā idam sarvam rakṣasām kulam anātham kṛtam
22. This entire clan of rākṣasas has been rendered helpless by you, due to your misfortune, which arose from desire and anger.
न हि त्वं शोचितव्यो मे प्रख्यातबलपौरुषः ।
स्त्रीस्वभावात्तु मे बुद्धिः कारुण्ये परिवर्तते ॥२३॥
23. na hi tvaṃ śocitavyo me prakhyātabalapauruṣaḥ ,
strīsvabhāvāttu me buddhiḥ kāruṇye parivartate.
23. na hi tvam śocitavyaḥ me prakhyātabalapauruṣaḥ
strīsvabhāvāt tu me buddhiḥ kāruṇye parivartate
23. hi tvam prakhyātabalapauruṣaḥ me na śocitavyaḥ
tu strīsvabhāvāt me buddhiḥ kāruṇye parivartate
23. Indeed, you, renowned for your strength and valor, should not be grieved for by me. But my intellect, due to a woman's intrinsic nature (svabhāva), turns to compassion.
सुकृतं दुष्कृतं च त्वं गृहीत्वा स्वां गतिं गतः ।
आत्मानमनुशोचामि त्वद्वियोगेन दुःखिताम् ॥२४॥
24. sukṛtaṃ duṣkṛtaṃ ca tvaṃ gṛhītvā svāṃ gatiṃ gataḥ ,
ātmānamanuśocāmi tvadviyogena duḥkhitām.
24. sukṛtam duṣkṛtam ca tvam gṛhītvā svām gatim
gataḥ ātmānam anuśocāmi tvadviyogena duḥkhitām
24. tvam sukṛtam ca duṣkṛtam gṛhītvā svām gatim
gataḥ tvadviyogena duḥkhitām ātmānam anuśocāmi
24. You have gone to your own destination, having taken both your good and bad deeds. I grieve for my own self (ātman), distressed by separation from you.
नीलजीमूतसंकाशः पीताम्बरशुभाङ्गदः ।
सर्वगात्राणि विक्षिप्य किं शेषे रुधिराप्लुतः ।
प्रसुप्त इव शोकार्तां किं मां न प्रतिभाषसे ॥२५॥
25. nīlajīmūtasaṃkāśaḥ pītāmbaraśubhāṅgadaḥ ,
sarvagātrāṇi vikṣipya kiṃ śeṣe rudhirāplutaḥ ,
prasupta iva śokārtāṃ kiṃ māṃ na pratibhāṣase.
25. nīlajīmūtasaṃkāśaḥ pītāmbaraśubhāṅgadaḥ
sarvagātrāṇi vikṣipya kim
śeṣe rudhirāplutaḥ prasuptaḥ
iva śokārtām kim mām na pratibhāṣase
25. kim rudhirāplutaḥ sarvagātrāṇi
vikṣipya nīlajīmūtasaṃkāśaḥ
pītāmbaraśubhāṅgadaḥ śeṣe? kim prasuptaḥ
iva śokārtām mām na pratibhāṣase?
25. Why do you lie here bathed in blood, with all your limbs cast about, you who resemble a dark cloud and wear yellow garments with auspicious armlets? Why do you not speak to me, distressed by sorrow, as if you were deeply asleep?
महावीर्यस्य दक्षस्य संयुगेष्वपलायिनः ।
यातुधानस्य दौहित्रीं किं त्वं मां नाभ्युदीक्षसे ॥२६॥
26. mahāvīryasya dakṣasya saṃyugeṣvapalāyinaḥ ,
yātudhānasya dauhitrīṃ kiṃ tvaṃ māṃ nābhyudīkṣase.
26. mahāvīryasya dakṣasya saṃyugeṣu apalāyinaḥ
yātudhānasya dauhitrīm kim tvam mām na abhi-udīkṣase
26. kim tvam mahāvīryasya dakṣasya saṃyugeṣu apalāyinaḥ
yātudhānasya dauhitrīm mām na abhi-udīkṣase?
26. Why do you not look upon me, the granddaughter of the greatly powerful and skillful demon (yātudhāna), who never fled from battlefields?
येन सूदयसे शत्रून् समरे सूर्यवर्चसा ।
वज्रो वज्रधरस्येव सो ऽयं ते सततार्चितः ॥२७॥
27. yena sūdayase śatrūn samare sūryavarcasā ,
vajro vajradharasyeva so'yaṃ te satatārcitaḥ.
27. yena sūdayase śatrūn samare sūryavarcasā vajraḥ
vajradharasya iva saḥ ayam te satatārcitaḥ
27. saḥ ayam te yena sūryavarcasā samare śatrūn sūdayase,
vajradharasya vajraḥ iva,
satatārcitaḥ (asti).
27. This (weapon) of yours, by which you destroy enemies in battle, shining with sun-like splendor, is perpetually revered, just like the thunderbolt of the thunderbolt-wielder (Indra).
रणे शत्रुप्रहरणो हेमजालपरिष्कृतः ।
परिघो व्यवकीर्णस्ते बाणैश्छिन्नः सहस्रधा ॥२८॥
28. raṇe śatrupraharaṇo hemajālapariṣkṛtaḥ ,
parigho vyavakīrṇaste bāṇaiśchinnaḥ sahasradhā.
28. raṇe śatrupraharaṇaḥ hemajālapariṣkṛtaḥ parighaḥ
vyavakīrṇaḥ te bāṇaiḥ chinnaḥ sahasradhā
28. te raṇe śatrupraharaṇaḥ hemajālapariṣkṛtaḥ parighaḥ bāṇaiḥ chinnaḥ sahasradhā vyavakīrṇaḥ (asti).
28. Your club (parigha), which in battle struck down enemies and was adorned with a net of gold, lies scattered, cut into a thousand pieces by arrows.
धिगस्तु हृदयं यस्या ममेदं न सहस्रधा ।
त्वयि पञ्चत्वमापन्ने फलते शोकपीडितम् ॥२९॥
29. dhigastu hṛdayaṃ yasyā mamedaṃ na sahasradhā ,
tvayi pañcatvamāpanne phalate śokapīḍitam.
29. dhik astu hṛdayam yasyā mama idam na sahasradhā
tvayi pañcatvam āpanne phalate śokapīḍitam
29. dhik astu idam mama hṛdayam yasyā tvayi pañcatvam
āpanne śokapīḍitam na sahasradhā phalate
29. Fie upon this heart of mine, which, though tormented by grief, does not break into a thousand pieces when you have met your demise.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे रामो विभीषणमुवाच ह ।
संस्कारः क्रियतां भ्रातुः स्त्रियश्चैता निवर्तय ॥३०॥
30. etasminnantare rāmo vibhīṣaṇamuvāca ha ,
saṃskāraḥ kriyatāṃ bhrātuḥ striyaścaitā nivartaya.
30. etasmin antare rāmaḥ vibhīṣaṇam uvāca ha saṃskāraḥ
kriyatām bhrātuḥ striyaḥ ca etāḥ nivartaya
30. etasmin antare rāmaḥ vibhīṣaṇam ha uvāca bhrātuḥ
saṃskāraḥ kriyatām ca etāḥ striyaḥ nivartaya
30. At this juncture, Rāma spoke to Vibhīṣaṇa: "Let the funeral rites (saṃskāra) for your brother be performed, and send these women back."
तं प्रश्रितस्ततो रामं श्रुतवाक्यो विभीषणः ।
विमृश्य बुद्ध्या धर्मज्ञो धर्मार्थसहितं वचः ।
रामस्यैवानुवृत्त्यर्थमुत्तरं प्रत्यभाषत ॥३१॥
31. taṃ praśritastato rāmaṃ śrutavākyo vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
vimṛśya buddhyā dharmajño dharmārthasahitaṃ vacaḥ ,
rāmasyaivānuvṛttyarthamuttaraṃ pratyabhāṣata.
31. tam praśritaḥ tataḥ rāmam śrutavākyaḥ
vibhīṣaṇaḥ vimṛśya buddhyā dharmajñaḥ
dharma artha sahitam vacaḥ rāmasya eva
anuvṛtti artham uttaram pratyabhāṣata
31. tataḥ śrutavākyaḥ dharmajñaḥ praśritaḥ
vibhīṣaṇaḥ buddhyā dharma artha sahitam
vacaḥ vimṛśya rāmasya eva anuvṛtti
artham tam rāmam uttaram pratyabhāṣata
31. Then, the humble Vibhīṣaṇa, having heard the words [of Rāma] and being a knower of (dharma), pondered with his intellect the speech that was combined with (dharma) and purpose. He then replied, for the sake of complying with Rāma himself.
त्यक्तधर्मव्रतं क्रूरं नृशंसमनृतं तथा ।
नाहमर्हो ऽस्मि संस्कर्तुं परदाराभिमर्शकम् ॥३२॥
32. tyaktadharmavrataṃ krūraṃ nṛśaṃsamanṛtaṃ tathā ,
nāhamarho'smi saṃskartuṃ paradārābhimarśakam.
32. tyakta dharma vratam krūram nṛśaṃsam anṛtam tathā na
aham arhaḥ asmi saṃskartum para dārā abhimarśakam
32. aham tyakta dharma vratam krūram nṛśaṃsam anṛtam
tathā para dārā abhimarśakam saṃskartum na arhaḥ asmi
32. I am not worthy to perform the rites for one who has abandoned the vow of (dharma), who is cruel, brutal, untruthful, and one who violates others' wives.
भ्रातृरूपो हि मे शत्रुरेष सर्वाहिते रतः ।
रावणो नार्हते पूजां पूज्यो ऽपि गुरुगौरवात् ॥३३॥
33. bhrātṛrūpo hi me śatrureṣa sarvāhite rataḥ ,
rāvaṇo nārhate pūjāṃ pūjyo'pi gurugauravāt.
33. bhrātṛrūpaḥ hi me śatruḥ eṣaḥ sarvāhite rataḥ
rāvaṇaḥ na arhate pūjām pūjyaḥ api gurugauravāt
33. hi eṣaḥ me bhrātṛrūpaḥ śatruḥ sarvāhite rataḥ
rāvaṇaḥ gurugauravāt pūjyaḥ api pūjām na arhate
33. Indeed, this enemy of mine, though appearing as a brother, is intent on causing harm to all. Rāvaṇa does not deserve reverence, even if he were worthy of respect due to his elder (guru) status.
नृशंस इति मां राम वक्ष्यन्ति मनुजा भुवि ।
श्रुत्वा तस्य गुणान् सर्वे वक्ष्यन्ति सुकृतं पुनः ॥३४॥
34. nṛśaṃsa iti māṃ rāma vakṣyanti manujā bhuvi ,
śrutvā tasya guṇān sarve vakṣyanti sukṛtaṃ punaḥ.
34. nṛśaṃsaḥ iti mām rāma vakṣyanti manujāḥ bhuvi
śrutvā tasya guṇān sarve vakṣyanti sukṛtam punaḥ
34. rāma bhuvi manujāḥ mām nṛśaṃsaḥ iti vakṣyanti
tasya guṇān śrutvā sarve punaḥ sukṛtam vakṣyanti
34. People on earth, O Rāma, will call me cruel. Having heard of his merits, everyone will again speak of his good deeds.
तच्छ्रुत्वा परमप्रीतो रामो धर्मभृतां वरः ।
विभीषणमुवाचेदं वाक्यज्ञो वाक्यकोविदम् ॥३५॥
35. tacchrutvā paramaprīto rāmo dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ,
vibhīṣaṇamuvācedaṃ vākyajño vākyakovidam.
35. tat śrutvā paramaprītaḥ rāmaḥ dharmabhṛtām varaḥ
vibhīṣaṇam uvāca idam vākyajñaḥ vākyakovidam
35. tat śrutvā dharmabhṛtām varaḥ rāmaḥ paramaprītaḥ
vākyajñaḥ vākyakovidam vibhīṣaṇam idam uvāca
35. Having heard that, Rāma, the best among those who uphold natural law (dharma), was exceedingly pleased. Skilled in speech himself, he then spoke these words to the eloquent Vibhīṣaṇa.
तवापि मे प्रियं कार्यं त्वत्प्रभवाच्च मे जितम् ।
अवश्यं तु क्षमं वाच्यो मया त्वं राक्षसेश्वर ॥३६॥
36. tavāpi me priyaṃ kāryaṃ tvatprabhavācca me jitam ,
avaśyaṃ tu kṣamaṃ vācyo mayā tvaṃ rākṣaseśvara.
36. tava api me priyam kāryam tvatprabhavāt ca me jitam
avaśyam tu kṣamam vācyaḥ mayā tvam rākṣaseśvara
36. api me priyam tava kāryam ca tvatprabhavāt me jitam
tu mayā tvam rākṣaseśvara avaśyam kṣamam vācyaḥ
36. Also, a favor of yours, which is dear to me, must be accomplished; indeed, through your influence, victory has been achieved by me. However, something fitting must certainly be conveyed by me to you, O lord of rākṣasas.
अधर्मानृतसंयुक्तः काममेष निशाचरः ।
तेजस्वी बलवाञ् शूरः संग्रामेषु च नित्यशः ॥३७॥
37. adharmānṛtasaṃyuktaḥ kāmameṣa niśācaraḥ ,
tejasvī balavāñ śūraḥ saṃgrāmeṣu ca nityaśaḥ.
37. adharmanṛtasaṃyuktaḥ kāmam eṣaḥ niśācaraḥ
tejasvī balavān śūraḥ saṃgrāmeṣu ca nityaśaḥ
37. eṣaḥ niśācaraḥ adharmanṛtasaṃyuktaḥ kāmam
tejasvī balavān śūraḥ ca saṃgrāmeṣu nityaśaḥ
37. Indeed, this night-prowler is associated with unrighteousness (adharma) and falsehood. He is glorious, powerful, and always valiant in battles.
शतक्रतुमुखैर्देवैः श्रूयते न पराजितः ।
महात्मा बलसंपन्नो रावणो लोकरावणः ॥३८॥
38. śatakratumukhairdevaiḥ śrūyate na parājitaḥ ,
mahātmā balasaṃpanno rāvaṇo lokarāvaṇaḥ.

38. It is heard that he, Rāvaṇa, was not defeated by the gods led by Śatakratu (Indra). He is a great personality, endowed with immense strength, and one who makes the worlds lament.
मरणान्तानि वैराणि निर्वृत्तं नः प्रयोजनम् ।
क्रियतामस्य संस्कारो ममाप्येष यथा तव ॥३९॥
39. maraṇāntāni vairāṇi nirvṛttaṃ naḥ prayojanam ,
kriyatāmasya saṃskāro mamāpyeṣa yathā tava.
39. maraṇāntāni vairāṇi nirvr̥ttam naḥ prayojanam
kriyatām asya saṃskāraḥ mama api eṣaḥ yathā tava
39. vairāṇi maraṇāntāni naḥ prayojanam nirvr̥ttam

39. Enmities conclude with death. Our objective has been accomplished. Therefore, let his funeral rites (saṃskāra) be performed, for he is as much mine as he is yours.
त्वत्सकाशान्महाबाहो संस्कारं विधिपूर्वकम् ।
क्षिप्रमर्हति धर्मज्ञ त्वं यशोभाग्भविष्यसि ॥४०॥
40. tvatsakāśānmahābāho saṃskāraṃ vidhipūrvakam ,
kṣipramarhati dharmajña tvaṃ yaśobhāgbhaviṣyasi.
40. tvatsakāśāt mahābāho saṃskāram vidhipūrvakam
kṣipram arhati dharmajña tvam yaśobhāk bhaviṣyasi
40. mahābāho dharmajña! tvam tvatsakāśāt kṣipram vidhipūrvakam saṃskāram (saḥ) arhati,
(tataḥ) yaśobhāk bhaviṣyasi
40. O mighty-armed one, from you, let the funeral rites (saṃskāra) be performed according to tradition. O knower of natural law (dharmajña), you will quickly become a partaker of glory.
राघवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा त्वरमाणो विभीषणः ।
संस्कारेणानुरूपेण योजयामास रावणम् ॥४१॥
41. rāghavasya vacaḥ śrutvā tvaramāṇo vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
saṃskāreṇānurūpeṇa yojayāmāsa rāvaṇam.

41. Hearing Rāghava's words, Vibhīṣaṇa, acting swiftly, performed the appropriate funeral rites (saṃskāra) for Rāvaṇa.
स ददौ पावकं तस्य विधियुक्तं विभीषणः ।
ताः स्त्रियो ऽनुनयामास सान्त्वमुक्त्वा पुनः पुनः ॥४२॥
42. sa dadau pāvakaṃ tasya vidhiyuktaṃ vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
tāḥ striyo'nunayāmāsa sāntvamuktvā punaḥ punaḥ.
42. sa dadau pāvakam tasya vidhiyuktam vibhīṣaṇaḥ
tāḥ striyaḥ anunayāmāsa sāntvam uktvā punaḥ punaḥ
42. saḥ vibhīṣaṇaḥ tasya vidhiyuktam pāvakam dadau saḥ
tāḥ striyaḥ sāntvam uktvā punaḥ punaḥ anunayāmāsa
42. Following the proper rituals, Vibhīṣaṇa offered the sacred fire to him (Rāvaṇa). He then repeatedly consoled those women, speaking words of comfort.
प्रविष्टासु च सर्वासु राक्षसीषु विभीषणः ।
रामपार्श्वमुपागम्य तदातिष्ठद्विनीतवत् ॥४३॥
43. praviṣṭāsu ca sarvāsu rākṣasīṣu vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
rāmapārśvamupāgamya tadātiṣṭhadvinītavat.
43. praviṣṭāsu ca sarvāsu rākṣasīṣu vibhīṣaṇaḥ
rāmapārśvam upāgamya tadā atiṣṭhat vinītavat
43. ca sarvāsu rākṣasīṣu praviṣṭāsu,
tadā vibhīṣaṇaḥ rāmapārśvam upāgamya vinītavat atiṣṭhat
43. Once all the demonesses had entered, Vibhīṣaṇa approached Rāma's side and then stood there with humility and reverence.
रामो ऽपि सह सैन्येन ससुग्रीवः सलक्ष्मणः ।
हर्षं लेभे रिपुं हत्वा यथा वृत्रं शतक्रतुः ॥४४॥
44. rāmo'pi saha sainyena sasugrīvaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ ,
harṣaṃ lebhe ripuṃ hatvā yathā vṛtraṃ śatakratuḥ.
44. rāmaḥ api saha sainyena sasugrīvaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ
harṣam lebhe ripum hatvā yathā vṛtram śatakratuḥ
44. api rāmaḥ sasugrīvaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ sainyena saha ripum hatvā harṣam lebhe,
yathā śatakratuḥ vṛtram (hatvā)
44. Rāma, accompanied by his army, Sugrīva, and Lakṣmaṇa, also experienced great joy after slaying his enemy, just as Śatakratu (Indra) did after vanquishing Vṛtra.
