एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण परां व्रीडामुपागतः ।
शत्रुघ्नो वीर्यसंपन्नो मन्दं मन्दमुवाच ह ॥१॥
1. evamuktastu rāmeṇa parāṃ vrīḍāmupāgataḥ ,
śatrughno vīryasaṃpanno mandaṃ mandamuvāca ha.

1. rāmeṇa evam uktaḥ tu,
vīrya-sampannaḥ śatrughnaḥ parām vrīḍām upāgataḥ,
(saḥ) mandam mandam uvāca ha
1. Thus addressed by Rāma, Śatrughna, who was endowed with prowess, felt great shame and spoke very, very slowly.
अवश्यं करणीयं च शासनं पुरुषर्षभ ।
तव चैव महाभाग शासनं दुरतिक्रमम् ।
अयं कामकरो राजंस्तवास्मि पुरुषर्षभ ॥२॥
2. avaśyaṃ karaṇīyaṃ ca śāsanaṃ puruṣarṣabha ,
tava caiva mahābhāga śāsanaṃ duratikramam ,
ayaṃ kāmakaro rājaṃstavāsmi puruṣarṣabha.
2. avaśyam karaṇīyam ca śāsanam
puruṣa-ṛṣabha | tava ca eva mahā-bhāga
śāsanam duratikramam | ayam kāma-karaḥ
rājan tava asmi puruṣa-ṛṣabha
2. puruṣa-ṛṣabha,
(mama) śāsanam ca avaśyam karaṇīyam mahā-bhāga,
tava śāsanam eva ca duratikramam rājan,
puruṣa-ṛṣabha,
ayam tava kāma-karaḥ asmi
2. And O best among men (puruṣa-ṛṣabha), your command must certainly be carried out. Indeed, O greatly fortunate one (mahābhāga), your command is difficult to transgress. O king, O best among men, I am your obedient servant.
एवमुक्ते तु शूरेण शत्रुघ्नेन महात्मना ।
उवाच रामः संहृष्टो लक्ष्मणं भरतं तथा ॥३॥
3. evamukte tu śūreṇa śatrughnena mahātmanā ,
uvāca rāmaḥ saṃhṛṣṭo lakṣmaṇaṃ bharataṃ tathā.
3. evam ukte tu śūreṇa śatrughnena mahātmanā
uvāca rāmaḥ saṃhṛṣṭaḥ lakṣmaṇam bharatam tathā
3. śūreṇa mahātmanā śatrughnena evam ukte tu,
saṃhṛṣṭaḥ rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇam bharatam tathā uvāca.
3. When the great-souled and brave Śatrughna had spoken thus, Rāma, greatly delighted, spoke to Lakṣmaṇa and Bharata as well.
संभारानभिषेकस्य आनयध्वं समाहिताः ।
अद्यैव पुरुषव्याघ्रमभिषेक्ष्यामि दुर्जयम् ॥४॥
4. saṃbhārānabhiṣekasya ānayadhvaṃ samāhitāḥ ,
adyaiva puruṣavyāghramabhiṣekṣyāmi durjayam.
4. saṃbhārān abhiṣekasya ānayadhvam samāhitāḥ
adya eva puruṣavyāghram abhiṣekṣyāmi durjayam
4. samāhitāḥ abhiṣekasya saṃbhārān ānayadhvam.
adya eva durjayam puruṣavyāghram abhiṣekṣyāmi.
4. Attentively gather the materials for the consecration (abhiṣeka). Today itself, I will consecrate this invincible best among men.
पुरोधसं च काकुत्स्थौ नैगमानृत्विजस्तथा ।
मन्त्रिणश्चैव मे सर्वानानयध्वं ममाज्ञया ॥५॥
5. purodhasaṃ ca kākutsthau naigamānṛtvijastathā ,
mantriṇaścaiva me sarvānānayadhvaṃ mamājñayā.
5. purodhasam ca kākutsthau naigamān ṛtvijaḥ tathā
mantriṇaḥ ca eva me sarvān ānayadhvam mama ājñayā
5. mama ājñayā,
kākutsthau,
purodhasam ca,
naigamān ṛtvijaḥ tathā,
me sarvān mantriṇaḥ ca eva ānayadhvam.
5. By my command, O two princes of Kakutstha, bring the royal priest, the citizens and the ritual priests, and also all my ministers.
राज्ञः शासनमाज्ञाय तथाकुर्वन्महारथाः ।
अभिषेकसमारम्भं पुरस्कृत्य पुरोधसं ।
प्रविष्टा राजभवनं पुरंदरगृहोपमम् ॥६॥
6. rājñaḥ śāsanamājñāya tathākurvanmahārathāḥ ,
abhiṣekasamārambhaṃ puraskṛtya purodhasaṃ ,
praviṣṭā rājabhavanaṃ puraṃdaragṛhopamam.
6. rājñaḥ śāsanam ājñāya tathā akurvan
mahārathāḥ abhiṣekasamārambham
puraskṛtya purodhasam praviṣṭāḥ
rājabhavanam purandaragṛhopamam
6. mahārathāḥ rājñaḥ śāsanam ājñāya,
tathā akurvan.
purodhasam abhiṣekasamārambham puraskṛtya,
purandaragṛhopamam rājabhavanam praviṣṭāḥ.
6. Understanding the king's (Rāma's) command, the great warriors acted accordingly. Placing the royal priest at the forefront for the commencement of the consecration, they entered the royal palace, which resembled the abode of Indra.
ततो ऽभिषेको ववृधे शत्रुघ्नस्य महात्मनः ।
संप्रहर्षकरः श्रीमान् राघवस्य पुरस्य च ॥७॥
7. tato'bhiṣeko vavṛdhe śatrughnasya mahātmanaḥ ,
saṃpraharṣakaraḥ śrīmān rāghavasya purasya ca.
7. tataḥ abhiṣekaḥ vavṛdhe śatrughnasya mahātmanaḥ
sampraharṣakaraḥ śrīmān rāghavasya purasya ca
7. Then the glorious consecration ceremony (abhiṣeka) of the great-souled Śatrughna greatly progressed, bringing immense joy to Rāghava and his city.
ततो ऽभिषिक्तं शत्रुघ्नमङ्कमारोप्य राघवः ।
उवाच मधुरां वाणीं तेजस्तस्याभिपूरयन् ॥८॥
8. tato'bhiṣiktaṃ śatrughnamaṅkamāropya rāghavaḥ ,
uvāca madhurāṃ vāṇīṃ tejastasyābhipūrayan.
8. tataḥ abhiṣiktam śatrughnam aṅkam āropya rāghavaḥ
uvāca madhurām vāṇīm tejaḥ tasya abhipūrayan
8. Then, Rāghava, placing the newly consecrated (abhiṣikta) Śatrughna on his lap, spoke sweet words, thereby enhancing his (Śatrughna's) vigor.
अयं शरस्त्वमोघस्ते दिव्यः परपुरंजयः ।
अनेन लवणं सौम्य हन्तासि रघुनन्दन ॥९॥
9. ayaṃ śarastvamoghaste divyaḥ parapuraṃjayaḥ ,
anena lavaṇaṃ saumya hantāsi raghunandana.
9. ayam śaraḥ tu amoghaḥ te divyaḥ parapurajayaḥ
anena lavaṇam saumya hantā asi raghunandana
9. This divine arrow of yours is indeed unfailing, capable of conquering enemy cities. With this, O gentle one (saumya), O delight of the Raghus (raghunandana), you shall slay Lavaṇa.
सृष्टः शरो ऽयं काकुत्स्थ यदा शेते महार्णवे ।
स्वयम्भूरजितो देवो यं नापश्यन् सुरासुराः ॥१०॥
10. sṛṣṭaḥ śaro'yaṃ kākutstha yadā śete mahārṇave ,
svayambhūrajito devo yaṃ nāpaśyan surāsurāḥ.
10. sṛṣṭaḥ śaraḥ ayam kākutstha yadā śete mahārṇave
svayambhūḥ ajitaḥ devaḥ yam na apaśyan surāsurāḥ
10. This arrow, O Kakutstha, was fashioned when the self-born (svayambhū), unconquered god slept in the great ocean, a being whom neither the gods nor the demons could perceive.
अदृश्यः सर्वभूतानां तेनायं हि शरोत्तमः ।
सृष्टः क्रोधाभिभूतेन विनाशार्थं दुरात्मनोः ।
मधुकैटभयोर्वीर विघाते वर्तमानयोः ॥११॥
11. adṛśyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ tenāyaṃ hi śarottamaḥ ,
sṛṣṭaḥ krodhābhibhūtena vināśārthaṃ durātmanoḥ ,
madhukaiṭabhayorvīra vighāte vartamānayoḥ.
11. adṛśyaḥ sarvabhūtānām tena ayam hi
śarottamaḥ sṛṣṭaḥ krodhābhibhūtena
vināśārtham durātmanoḥ
madhukaiṭabhayoḥ vīra vighāte vartamānayoḥ
11. vīra adṛśyaḥ sarvabhūtānām ayam hi
śarottamaḥ tena krodhābhibhūtena
vighāte vartamānayoḥ durātmanoḥ
madhukaiṭabhayoḥ vināśārtham sṛṣṭaḥ
11. O hero, this supreme arrow, invisible to all beings, was indeed created by one overwhelmed by anger for the destruction of the two evil-minded Madhu and Kaiṭabha, who were then engaged in their obstructive activities.
स्रष्टुकामेन लोकांस्त्रींस्तौ चानेन हतौ युधि ।
अनेन शरमुख्येन ततो लोकांश्चकार सः ॥१२॥
12. sraṣṭukāmena lokāṃstrīṃstau cānena hatau yudhi ,
anena śaramukhyena tato lokāṃścakāra saḥ.
12. sraṣṭukāmena lokān trīn tau ca anena hatau
yudhi anena śaramukhyena tataḥ lokān cakāra saḥ
12. trīn lokān sraṣṭukāmena anena ca tau yudhi
hatau anena śaramukhyena tataḥ saḥ lokān cakāra
12. By the one desirous of creating the three worlds, those two (Madhu and Kaiṭabha) were killed in battle by him. Thereafter, with this foremost arrow, he created the worlds.
नायं मया शरः पूर्वं रावणस्य वधार्थिना ।
मुक्तः शत्रुघ्न भूतानां महांस्त्रासो भवेदिति ॥१३॥
13. nāyaṃ mayā śaraḥ pūrvaṃ rāvaṇasya vadhārthinā ,
muktaḥ śatrughna bhūtānāṃ mahāṃstrāso bhavediti.
13. na ayam mayā śaraḥ pūrvam rāvaṇasya vadhārthinā
muktaḥ śatrughna bhūtānām mahān trāsaḥ bhavet iti
13. śatrughna mayā pūrvam rāvaṇasya vadhārthinā ayam
śaraḥ na muktaḥ iti bhūtānām mahān trāsaḥ bhavet
13. O Śatrughna, I did not release this arrow previously for the purpose of killing Rāvaṇa, thinking that 'a great terror would befall (all) beings'.
यच्च तस्य महच्छूलं त्र्यम्बकेण महात्मना ।
दत्तं शत्रुविनाशाय मधोरायुधमुत्तमम् ॥१४॥
14. yacca tasya mahacchūlaṃ tryambakeṇa mahātmanā ,
dattaṃ śatruvināśāya madhorāyudhamuttamam.
14. yat ca tasya mahat śūlam tryambakeṇa mahātmanā
dattam śatruvināśāya madhoḥ āyudham uttamam
14. yat ca tasya madhoḥ āyudham mahat uttamam śūlam
tryambakeṇa mahātmanā śatruvināśāya dattam
14. And that great trident, which was given by the great-souled Tryambaka (Shiva) to Madhu for the destruction of enemies, was his supreme weapon.
तत् संनिक्षिप्य भवने पूज्यमानं पुनः पुनः ।
दिशः सर्वाः समालोक्य प्राप्नोत्याहारमात्मनः ॥१५॥
15. tat saṃnikṣipya bhavane pūjyamānaṃ punaḥ punaḥ ,
diśaḥ sarvāḥ samālokya prāpnotyāhāramātmanaḥ.
15. tat saṃnikṣipya bhavane pūjyamānam punaḥ punaḥ
diśaḥ sarvāḥ samālokya prāpnoti āhāram ātmanaḥ
15. tat bhavane punaḥ punaḥ pūjyamānam saṃnikṣipya,
sarvāḥ diśaḥ samālokya,
ātmanaḥ āhāram prāpnoti.
15. Having placed that (victim) in his dwelling, where it is repeatedly attended to, and having surveyed all directions, he then obtains food for himself (ātman).
यदा तु युद्धमाकाङ्क्षन् कश्चिदेनं समाह्वयेत् ।
तदा शूलं गृहीत्वा तद्भस्म रक्षः करोति तम् ॥१६॥
16. yadā tu yuddhamākāṅkṣan kaścidenaṃ samāhvayet ,
tadā śūlaṃ gṛhītvā tadbhasma rakṣaḥ karoti tam.
16. yadā tu yuddham ākaṅkṣan kaścid enam samāhvayet
tadā śūlam gṛhītvā tat bhasma rakṣaḥ karoti tam
16. Tu yadā kaścid yuddham ākaṅkṣan enam samāhvayet,
tadā rakṣaḥ śūlam gṛhītvā,
tam tat bhasma karoti.
16. But when someone, desiring battle, should challenge him, then, taking up a spear, that (rākṣasa) turns him into ash.
स त्वं पुरुषशार्दूल तमायुधविवर्जितम् ।
अप्रविष्टपुरं पूर्वं द्वारि तिष्ठ धृतायुधः ॥१७॥
17. sa tvaṃ puruṣaśārdūla tamāyudhavivarjitam ,
apraviṣṭapuraṃ pūrvaṃ dvāri tiṣṭha dhṛtāyudhaḥ.
17. sa tvam puruṣaśārdūla tam āyudhavivarjitam
apraviṣṭapuram pūrvam dvāri tiṣṭha dhṛtāyudhaḥ
17. Sa tvam puruṣaśārdūla,
pūrvam tam āyudhavivarjitam apraviṣṭapuram (santam tam),
dhṛtāyudhaḥ dvāri tiṣṭha.
17. Therefore, you, O tiger among men, stand armed at the gate, before he (the rākṣasa) has entered our dwelling and while he is weaponless.
अप्रविष्टं च भवनं युद्धाय पुरुषर्षभ ।
आह्वयेथा महाबाहो ततो हन्तासि राक्षसं ॥१८॥
18. apraviṣṭaṃ ca bhavanaṃ yuddhāya puruṣarṣabha ,
āhvayethā mahābāho tato hantāsi rākṣasaṃ.
18. apraviṣṭam ca bhavanam yuddhāya puruṣarṣabha
āhvayethā mahābāho tataḥ hantā asi rākṣasam
18. Ca puruṣarṣabha,
mahābāho,
apraviṣṭam bhavanam (santam tam),
yuddhāya āhvayethā; tataḥ rākṣasam hantā asi.
18. And, O bull among men, O mighty-armed one, you should challenge him for battle before he has entered our dwelling; then you will be the slayer of the (rākṣasa).
अन्यथा क्रियमाणे तु अवध्यः स भविष्यति ।
यदि त्वेवं कृते वीर विनाशमुपयास्यति ॥१९॥
19. anyathā kriyamāṇe tu avadhyaḥ sa bhaviṣyati ,
yadi tvevaṃ kṛte vīra vināśamupayāsyati.
19. anyathā kriyamāṇe tu avadhyaḥ saḥ bhaviṣyati
yadi tu evam kṛte vīra vināśam upayāsyati
19. But if it is done otherwise, he will become invulnerable. However, if it is done in this way, O hero, he will surely meet his destruction.
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं शूलस्य च विपर्ययम् ।
श्रीमतः शितिकण्ठस्य कृत्यं हि दुरतिक्रमम् ॥२०॥
20. etatte sarvamākhyātaṃ śūlasya ca viparyayam ,
śrīmataḥ śitikaṇṭhasya kṛtyaṃ hi duratikramam.
20. etat te sarvam ākhyātam śūlasya ca viparyayam
śrīmataḥ śitikaṇṭhasya kṛtyam hi duratikramam
20. All this has been explained to you, including the extraordinary nature of the spear. Indeed, the actions of the glorious blue-throated (Śiva) are insurmountable.
