यामेव रात्रिं शत्रुघ्न पर्णशालां समाविशत् ।
तामेव रात्रिं सीतापि प्रसूता दारकद्वयम् ॥१॥
1. yāmeva rātriṃ śatrughna parṇaśālāṃ samāviśat ,

1. O Shatrughna, the very night you entered the leaf-hut, Sita also gave birth to twin sons.
ततो ऽर्धरात्रसमये बालका मुनिदारकाः ।
वाल्मीकेः प्रियमाचख्युः सीतायाः प्रसवं शुभम् ।
तस्य रक्षां महातेजः कुरु भूतविनाशिनीम् ॥२॥
2. tato'rdharātrasamaye bālakā munidārakāḥ ,
vālmīkeḥ priyamācakhyuḥ sītāyāḥ prasavaṃ śubham ,
tasya rakṣāṃ mahātejaḥ kuru bhūtavināśinīm.
2. tataḥ ardharātrasamaye bālakāḥ
munidārakāḥ vālmīkeḥ priyam ācakhyuḥ
sītāyāḥ prasavaṃ śubham tasya
rakṣāṃ mahātejaḥ kuru bhūtavināśinīm
2. Then, at midnight, the boys, the disciples of the sages (muni), announced to Valmiki the pleasant news of Sita's auspicious delivery. 'O greatly powerful one,' they entreated, 'provide protection for it, a protection that destroys all evil beings!'
तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा मुनिर्हर्षमुपागमत् ।
भूतघ्नीं चाकरोत्ताभ्यां रक्षां रक्षोविनाशिनीम् ॥३॥
3. teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā munirharṣamupāgamat ,
bhūtaghnīṃ cākarottābhyāṃ rakṣāṃ rakṣovināśinīm.
3. teṣām tat vacanam śrutvā muniḥ harṣam upāgamat
bhūtaghnīm ca akarot tābhyām rakṣām rakṣovināśinīm
3. muniḥ teṣām tat vacanam śrutvā harṣam upāgamat ca

3. Having heard their words, the sage became joyful. He then created for them a protection that destroys both ghosts and rākṣasas.
कुशमुष्टिमुपादाय लवं चैव तु स द्विजः ।
वाल्मीकिः प्रददौ ताभ्यां रक्षां भूतविनाशिनीम् ॥४॥
4. kuśamuṣṭimupādāya lavaṃ caiva tu sa dvijaḥ ,
vālmīkiḥ pradadau tābhyāṃ rakṣāṃ bhūtavināśinīm.
4. kuśamuṣṭim upādāya lavam ca eva tu saḥ dvijaḥ
vālmīkiḥ pradadau tābhyām rakṣām bhūtavināśinīm
4. ca eva tu saḥ dvijaḥ vālmīkiḥ kuśamuṣṭim upādāya
lavam tābhyām bhūtavināśinīm rakṣām pradadau
4. And that twice-born (dvija) Valmiki, having taken a handful of kuśa grass and also Lava, bestowed upon those two a protection that destroys spirits.
यस्तयोः पूर्वजो जातः स कुशैर्मन्त्रसंस्कृतैः ।
निर्मार्जनीयस्तु भवेत् कुश इत्यस्य नामतः ॥५॥
5. yastayoḥ pūrvajo jātaḥ sa kuśairmantrasaṃskṛtaiḥ ,
nirmārjanīyastu bhavet kuśa ityasya nāmataḥ.
5. yaḥ tayoḥ pūrvajaḥ jātaḥ saḥ kuśaiḥ mantrasaṃskṛtaiḥ
nirmārjanīyaḥ tu bhavet kuśaḥ iti asya nāmataḥ
5. tayoḥ yaḥ pūrvajaḥ jātaḥ saḥ mantrasaṃskṛtaiḥ kuśaiḥ
निर्मार्जनीयः tu bhavet asya nāmataḥ iti kuśaḥ
5. The one who was born as the elder (pūrvaja) of those two should be purified with kuśa grass, consecrated by mantras. And so, he should be named Kuśa due to this.
यश्चापरो भवेत्ताभ्यां लवेन सुसमाहितः ।
निर्मार्जनीयो वृद्धाभिर्लवश्चेति स नामतः ॥६॥
6. yaścāparo bhavettābhyāṃ lavena susamāhitaḥ ,
nirmārjanīyo vṛddhābhirlavaśceti sa nāmataḥ.
6. yaḥ ca aparaḥ bhavet tābhyām lavena susamāhitaḥ
nirmārjanīyaḥ vṛddhābhiḥ lavaḥ ca iti saḥ nāmataḥ
6. ca yaḥ aparaḥ tābhyām bhavet saḥ lavena susamāhitaḥ
वृद्धाभिः nirmārjanīyaḥ ca iti saḥ nāmataḥ lavaḥ
6. And the other one who is born to those two should be purified by old women, with a well-performed (ritual involving) 'cutting' (lava). And so, he is named Lava due to this.
एवं कुशलवौ नाम्ना ताव् उभौ यमजातकौ ।
मत्कृतभ्यां च नामभ्यां ख्यातियुक्तौ भविष्यतः ॥७॥
7. evaṃ kuśalavau nāmnā tāv ubhau yamajātakau ,
matkṛtabhyāṃ ca nāmabhyāṃ khyātiyuktau bhaviṣyataḥ.
7. evam kuśalavau nāmnā tau ubhau yamajātakau
matkṛtabhyām ca nāmbhyām khyātiyuktau bhaviṣyataḥ
7. evam tau ubhau nāmnā yamajātakau kuśalavau
matkṛtabhyām nāmbhyām ca khyātiyuktau bhaviṣyataḥ
7. Thus, these two, Kuśa and Lava by name, born as twins, will become renowned through the names given by me.
ते रक्षां जगृहुस्तां च मुनिहस्तात् समाहिताः ।
अकुर्वंश्च ततो रक्षां तयोर्विगतकल्मषाः ॥८॥
8. te rakṣāṃ jagṛhustāṃ ca munihastāt samāhitāḥ ,
akurvaṃśca tato rakṣāṃ tayorvigatakalmaṣāḥ.
8. te rakṣām jagṛhuḥ tām ca munihastāt samāhitāḥ
akurvan ca tataḥ rakṣām tayoḥ vigatakalmaṣāḥ
8. samāhitāḥ vigatakalmaṣāḥ te munihastāt tām
rakṣām jagṛhuḥ ca tataḥ tayoḥ rakṣām akurvan ca
8. And those pure individuals, being attentive, accepted that protective ritual from the sage's hands. Thereafter, they performed the protective rituals for those two.
तथा तां क्रियमाणां तु रक्षां गोत्रं च नाम च ।
संकीर्तनं च रामस्य सीतायाः प्रसवौ शुभौ ॥९॥
9. tathā tāṃ kriyamāṇāṃ tu rakṣāṃ gotraṃ ca nāma ca ,
saṃkīrtanaṃ ca rāmasya sītāyāḥ prasavau śubhau.
9. tathā tām kriyamāṇām tu rakṣām gotram ca nāma ca
saṃkīrtanam ca rāmasya sītāyāḥ prasavau śubhāu
9. tathā tu tām kriyamāṇām rakṣām ca rāmasya sītāyāḥ
gotram ca nāma ca saṃkīrtanam ca śubhāu prasavau
9. Similarly, during that ongoing protective ritual, the lineage, the name, and the glorification of Rama and Sītā were (also observed) for the two auspicious offspring.
अर्धरात्रे तु शत्रुघ्नः शुश्राव सुमहत् प्रियम् ।
पर्णशालां गतो रात्रौ दिष्ट्या दिष्ट्येति चाब्रवीत् ॥१०॥
10. ardharātre tu śatrughnaḥ śuśrāva sumahat priyam ,
parṇaśālāṃ gato rātrau diṣṭyā diṣṭyeti cābravīt.

parṇaśālām gataḥ rātrau diṣṭyā diṣṭyā iti ca abravīt
10. tu ardharātre śatrughnaḥ sumahat priyam śuśrāva

10. At midnight, Shatrughna heard very significant and pleasant news. Having gone to the leaf-hut at night, he exclaimed, 'Fortunately! Fortunately!'
तथ तस्य प्रहृष्टस्य शत्रुघ्नस्य महात्मनः ।
व्यतीता वार्षिकी रात्रिः श्रावणी लघुविक्रमा ॥११॥
11. tatha tasya prahṛṣṭasya śatrughnasya mahātmanaḥ ,
vyatītā vārṣikī rātriḥ śrāvaṇī laghuvikramā.
11. tatha tasya prahṛṣṭasya śatrughnasya mahātmanaḥ
vyatītā vārṣikī rātriḥ śrāvaṇī laghuvikramā
11. tatha tasya prahṛṣṭasya mahātmanaḥ śatrughnasya

11. Thus, for the greatly delighted, magnanimous Shatrughna, the rainy season night of Shravana, which passed quickly, came to an end.
प्रभाते तु महावीर्यः कृत्वा पौर्वाह्णिकं क्रमम् ।
मुनिं प्राञ्जलिरामन्त्र्य प्रायात् पश्चान्मुखः पुनः ॥१२॥
12. prabhāte tu mahāvīryaḥ kṛtvā paurvāhṇikaṃ kramam ,
muniṃ prāñjalirāmantrya prāyāt paścānmukhaḥ punaḥ.
12. prabhāte tu mahāvīryaḥ kṛtvā paurvāhṇikaṃ kramam
munim prāñjaliḥ āmantrya prāyāt paścānmukhaḥ punaḥ

12. Then, in the morning, the mighty Shatrughna, after completing his morning routine, addressed the sage (muni) with folded hands and again departed, facing west.
स गत्वा यमुनातीरं सप्तरात्रोषितः पथि ।
ऋषीणां पुण्यकीर्तीनामाश्रमे वासमभ्ययात् ॥१३॥
13. sa gatvā yamunātīraṃ saptarātroṣitaḥ pathi ,
ṛṣīṇāṃ puṇyakīrtīnāmāśrame vāsamabhyayāt.
13. sa gatvā yamunātīram saptarātroṣitaḥ pathi
ṛṣīṇām puṇyakīrtīnām āśrame vāsam abhyayāt
13. sa yamunātīram gatvā pathi saptarātroṣitaḥ

13. He, having traveled to the bank of the Yamuna River, stayed seven nights on the way. Then, he took up residence in the hermitage (āśrama) of the sages (ṛṣi), who were renowned for their virtue.
स तत्र मुनिभिः सार्धं भार्गवप्रमुखैर्नृपः ।
कथाभिर्बहुरूपाभिर्वासं चक्रे महायशाः ॥१४॥
14. sa tatra munibhiḥ sārdhaṃ bhārgavapramukhairnṛpaḥ ,
kathābhirbahurūpābhirvāsaṃ cakre mahāyaśāḥ.

nṛpaḥ kathābhiḥ bahurūpābhiḥ vāsam cakre mahāyaśāḥ

14. There, the greatly renowned king (Shatrughna), along with the sages (muni) led by Bhargava, spent his time engaging in various kinds of discussions.
