Having traveled one and a half yojanas, Rāma, the delight of the Raghu dynasty, saw the sacred-watered Sarayū river, which flowed westward.
अथ तस्मिन्मुहूर्ते तु ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः ।
सर्वैः परिवृतो देवैरृषिभिश्च महात्मभिः ॥२॥

Then, at that very moment, Brahmā, the grandfather of all worlds, accompanied by all the great-souled gods and sages...
आययौ यत्र काकुत्स्थः स्वर्गाय समुपस्थितः ।
विमानशतकोटीभिर्दिव्याभिरभिसंवृतः ॥३॥

3. āyayau yatra kākutsthaḥ svargāya samupasthitaḥ ,
vimānaśatakoṭībhirdivyābhirabhisaṃvṛtaḥ.

Brahmā arrived where Rāma, prepared for his ascent to heaven (svarga), was present, surrounded by hundreds of millions of divine aerial chariots (vimāna).

And a shower of flowers, released by the wind, fell like a great torrent.
तस्मिंस्तूर्यशताकीर्णे गन्धर्वाप्सरसंकुले ।

In that place, filled with hundreds of musical instruments and teeming with Gandharvas and Apsarases, Rama entered the waters of the Sarayu with his feet.
ततः पितामहो वाणीमन्तरिक्षादभाषत ।
आगच्छ विष्णो भद्रं ते दिष्ट्या प्राप्तो ऽसि राघव ॥६॥

6. tataḥ pitāmaho vāṇīmantarikṣādabhāṣata ,

Then Brahma (pitāmaha) spoke a voice from the sky: "Come, O Viṣṇu! May good fortune be upon you. Fortunately, O descendant of Raghu (Rāghava), you have arrived."
भ्रातृभिः सह देवाभैः प्रविशस्व स्वकां तनुम् ।
वैष्णवीं तां महातेजस्तदाकाशं सनातनम् ॥७॥

7. bhrātṛbhiḥ saha devābhaiḥ praviśasva svakāṃ tanum ,
vaiṣṇavīṃ tāṃ mahātejastadākāśaṃ sanātanam.

mahātejas! devābhaiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha svakām tām vaiṣṇavīm tanum,
tat sanātanam ākāśam ca praviśasva.

O greatly effulgent one (mahātejas)! With your brothers, who possess the splendor of gods, enter your own (Viṣṇu) body, which is that eternal space.
त्वं हि लोकगतिर्देव न त्वां के चित् प्रजानते ।
ऋते मायां विशालाक्ष तव पूर्वपरिग्रहाम् ॥८॥

8. tvaṃ hi lokagatirdeva na tvāṃ ke cit prajānate ,
ṛte māyāṃ viśālākṣa tava pūrvaparigrahām.

Indeed, O God, you are the refuge of the world. No one truly knows you, O wide-eyed one, except through your anciently adopted illusion (māyā).
त्वमचिन्त्यं महद्भूतमक्षयं सर्वसंग्रहम् ।
यामिच्छसि महातेजस्तां तनुं प्रविश स्वयम् ॥९॥

9. tvamacintyaṃ mahadbhūtamakṣayaṃ sarvasaṃgraham ,
yāmicchasi mahātejastāṃ tanuṃ praviśa svayam.

tvam acintyam mahat bhūtam akṣayam sarvasaṅgraham

You are the inconceivable, great being, imperishable, the repository of all. O greatly effulgent one, whichever form you desire, into that form you yourself enter.
पितामहवचः श्रुत्वा विनिश्चित्य महामतिः ।
विवेश वैष्णवं तेजः सशरीरः सहानुजः ॥१०॥

10. pitāmahavacaḥ śrutvā viniścitya mahāmatiḥ ,
viveśa vaiṣṇavaṃ tejaḥ saśarīraḥ sahānujaḥ.

Having heard the words of the grandfather (Brahmā), and having resolved the matter with great intelligence, he entered the divine radiance (tejas) of Viṣṇu, still embodied and accompanied by his younger brother.
ततो विष्णुगतं देवं पूजयन्ति स्म देवताः ।
साध्या मरुद्गणाश्चैव सेन्द्राः साग्निपुरोगमाः ॥११॥

11. tato viṣṇugataṃ devaṃ pūjayanti sma devatāḥ ,
sādhyā marudgaṇāścaiva sendrāḥ sāgnipurogamāḥ.

tataḥ viṣṇugatam devam pūjayanti sma devatāḥ

Then, the gods (devas) – the Sādhyas and the Maruts, along with Indra and led by Agni – worshipped the deity who had entered Viṣṇu.
ये च दिव्या ऋषिगणा गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्च याः ।
सुपर्णनागयक्षाश्च दैत्यदानवराक्षसाः ॥१२॥

12. ye ca divyā ṛṣigaṇā gandharvāpsarasaśca yāḥ ,
suparṇanāgayakṣāśca daityadānavarākṣasāḥ.

ye ca divyāḥ ṛṣigaṇāḥ ca yāḥ gandharva-apsarasaḥ ca

And those divine groups of sages, and those Gandharvas and Apsarases, and Suparṇas, Nāgas, Yakṣas, Daityas, Dānavas, and Rākṣasas (were present).
सर्वं हृष्टं प्रमुदितं सर्वं पूर्णमनोरथम् ।
साधु साध्विति तत् सर्वं त्रिदिवं गतकल्मषम् ॥१३॥

13. sarvaṃ hṛṣṭaṃ pramuditaṃ sarvaṃ pūrṇamanoratham ,
sādhu sādhviti tat sarvaṃ tridivaṃ gatakalmaṣam.

sarvam hṛṣṭam pramuditam sarvam pūrṇa-manoratham
sādhu sādhu iti tat sarvam tridivam gata-kalmaṣam

All (beings) were delighted and exceedingly joyful; all had their desires fully accomplished. Saying 'Excellent! Excellent!', all that assembly was heavenly and freed from all impurities.
अथ विष्णुर्महातेजाः पितामहमुवाच ह ।
एषां लोकाञ्जनौघानां दातुमर्हसि सुव्रत ॥१४॥

14. atha viṣṇurmahātejāḥ pitāmahamuvāca ha ,
eṣāṃ lokāñjanaughānāṃ dātumarhasi suvrata.

Then Viṣṇu, the exceedingly brilliant one, indeed said to the Grandsire (Brahmā): 'O virtuous one, you ought to grant worlds to these multitudes of people.'
इमे हि सर्वे स्नेहान्मामनुयाता मनस्विनः ।
भक्ता भाजयितव्याश्च त्यक्तात्मानश्च मत्कृते ॥१५॥

15. ime hi sarve snehānmāmanuyātā manasvinaḥ ,
bhaktā bhājayitavyāśca tyaktātmānaśca matkṛte.

hi ime sarve manasvinaḥ bhaktāḥ (ca) mām snehāt anuyātāḥ
(ca) mat-kṛte tyakta-ātmānaḥ (ca) bhājayitavyāḥ (santi)
(ca) mat-kṛte tyakta-ātmānaḥ (ca) bhājayitavyāḥ (santi)
15.
Indeed, all these noble-minded (beings) followed me out of affection. They are my devotees and should be rewarded, for they have given up their lives (ātman) for my sake.
तच्छ्रुत्वा विष्णुवचनं ब्रह्मा लोकगुरुः प्रभुः ।
लोकान् सान्तानिकान्नाम यास्यन्तीमे समागताः ॥१६॥

16. tacchrutvā viṣṇuvacanaṃ brahmā lokaguruḥ prabhuḥ ,
lokān sāntānikānnāma yāsyantīme samāgatāḥ.

tat śrutvā viṣṇuvacanam brahmā lokaguruḥ prabhuḥ

Having heard those words of Viṣṇu, Brahmā, the preceptor and lord of the worlds, declared that all those who have assembled here would go to the worlds named Sāntānika.
यच्च तिर्यग्गतं किं चिद् राममेवानुचिन्तयत् ।
प्राणांस्त्यक्ष्यति भक्त्या वै संताने तु निवत्स्यति ।
सर्वैरेव गुणैर्युक्ते ब्रह्मलोकादनन्तरे ॥१७॥
प्राणांस्त्यक्ष्यति भक्त्या वै संताने तु निवत्स्यति ।
सर्वैरेव गुणैर्युक्ते ब्रह्मलोकादनन्तरे ॥१७॥
17. yacca tiryaggataṃ kiṃ cid rāmamevānucintayat ,
prāṇāṃstyakṣyati bhaktyā vai saṃtāne tu nivatsyati ,
sarvaireva guṇairyukte brahmalokādanantare.
prāṇāṃstyakṣyati bhaktyā vai saṃtāne tu nivatsyati ,
sarvaireva guṇairyukte brahmalokādanantare.

yat ca tiryaggatam kim cit rāmam eva
anucintayat prāṇān tyakṣyati bhaktyā
vai saṃtāne tu nivatsyati sarvaiḥ
eva guṇaiḥ yukte brahmalokāt anantare
anucintayat prāṇān tyakṣyati bhaktyā
vai saṃtāne tu nivatsyati sarvaiḥ
eva guṇaiḥ yukte brahmalokāt anantare
17.
yat ca kim cit tiryaggatam rāmam eva
anucintayat (saḥ) bhaktyā vai prāṇān
tyakṣyati tu sarvaiḥ eva guṇaiḥ yukte
brahmalokāt anantare saṃtāne nivatsyati
anucintayat (saḥ) bhaktyā vai prāṇān
tyakṣyati tu sarvaiḥ eva guṇaiḥ yukte
brahmalokāt anantare saṃtāne nivatsyati
17.
And whatever creature, even if born as an animal, meditates solely on Rāma, will certainly give up its life with devotion (bhakti) and reside in a state of continuity (santāna), endowed with all qualities, in a realm immediately succeeding the world of (brahman).

And the monkeys, as well as the bears, similarly returned to their own original forms.
येभ्यो विनिःसृता ये ये सुरादिभ्यः सुसंभवाः ।
ऋषिभ्यो नागयक्षेभ्यस्तांस्तानेव प्रपेदिरे ॥१९॥

19. yebhyo viniḥsṛtā ye ye surādibhyaḥ susaṃbhavāḥ ,
ṛṣibhyo nāgayakṣebhyastāṃstāneva prapedire.

Those (beings) who had originated from the gods and other exalted beings, and those who were born from sages, Nāgas, and Yakṣas, all returned to their respective sources.
तथोक्तवति देवेशे गोप्रतारमुपागताः ।
भेजिरे सरयूं सर्वे हर्षपूर्णाश्रुविक्लवाः ॥२०॥

20. tathoktavati deveśe gopratāramupāgatāḥ ,
bhejire sarayūṃ sarve harṣapūrṇāśruviklavāḥ.

tathā uktavati deveśe gopratāram upāgatāḥ

When the lord of the gods spoke thus, all who had arrived at Gopratāra, overwhelmed with tears of joy, entered the Sarayū river.
अवगाह्य जलं यो यः प्राणी ह्यासीत् प्रहृष्टवत् ।
मानुषं देहमुत्सृज्य विमानं सो ऽध्यरोहत ॥२१॥

21. avagāhya jalaṃ yo yaḥ prāṇī hyāsīt prahṛṣṭavat ,
mānuṣaṃ dehamutsṛjya vimānaṃ so'dhyarohata.

avagāhya jalam yaḥ yaḥ prāṇī hi āsīt prahṛṣṭavat
mānuṣam deham utsṛjya vimānam saḥ adhyarohata

yaḥ yaḥ prāṇī jalam avagāhya prahṛṣṭavat hi āsīt,

Whichever being, having joyfully immersed themselves in the water, abandoned their human body, that one ascended to a celestial chariot.
तिर्यग्योनिगताश्चापि संप्राप्ताः सरयूजलम् ।
दिव्या दिव्येन वपुषा देवा दीप्ता इवाभवन् ॥२२॥

22. tiryagyonigatāścāpi saṃprāptāḥ sarayūjalam ,
divyā divyena vapuṣā devā dīptā ivābhavan.

And even those born in animal wombs (animals), having reached the Sarayū water, became divine with divine bodies, like resplendent gods.
गत्वा तु सरयूतोयं स्थावराणि चराणि च ।
प्राप्य तत्तोयविक्लेदं देवलोकमुपागमन् ॥२३॥

23. gatvā tu sarayūtoyaṃ sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca ,

tu sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca sarayūtoyam gatvā,

And having gone to the Sarayū water, both immobile and mobile beings, upon receiving moisture from that water, ascended to the celestial realm.
देवानां यस्य या योनिर्वानरा ऋष्कराक्षसाः ।
तामेव विविशुः सर्वे देहान्निक्षिप्य चाम्भसि ॥२४॥

All of them, having cast off their (divine) bodies into the water, entered those very species of monkeys, bears, and rākṣasas, which were the lineages (yoni) of the gods.
तथा स्वर्गगतं सर्वं कृत्वा लोकगुरुर्दिवम् ।
जगाम त्रिदशैः सार्धं हृष्टैर्हृष्टो महामतिः ॥२५॥

25. tathā svargagataṃ sarvaṃ kṛtvā lokagururdivam ,

25.
Thus, having ensured that all (the fallen heroes) had attained heaven, the great-minded preceptor of the worlds (lokaguru), himself delighted, went to his celestial abode along with the delighted gods.
एतावदेव आख्यानं सोत्तरं ब्रह्मपूजितम् ।
रामायणमिति ख्यातं मुख्यं वाल्मीकिना कृतम् ॥२६॥
