इत्युक्त्वा हनुमांस्तत्र पुनः कृष्णाजिनाम्बराम् ।
अब्रवीत्तां महाभागां तापसीं धर्मचारिणीम् ॥१॥
1. ityuktvā hanumāṃstatra punaḥ kṛṣṇājināmbarām ,
abravīttāṃ mahābhāgāṃ tāpasīṃ dharmacāriṇīm.

1. Having said this, Hanumān there again spoke to that illustrious ascetic woman, clad in a black deerskin, who was practicing her natural law (dharma).
इदं प्रविष्टाः सहसा बिलं तिमिरसंवृतम् ।
क्षुत्पिपासा परिश्रान्ताः परिखिन्नाश्च सर्वशः ॥२॥
2. idaṃ praviṣṭāḥ sahasā bilaṃ timirasaṃvṛtam ,
kṣutpipāsā pariśrāntāḥ parikhinnāśca sarvaśaḥ.
2. idam praviṣṭāḥ sahasā bilam timirasaṃvṛtam
kṣutpipāsāpariśrāntāḥ parikhinnāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
2. sahasā timirasaṃvṛtam idam bilam praviṣṭāḥ

2. Having suddenly entered this cave enveloped in darkness, we are completely exhausted by hunger and thirst and greatly distressed in every way.
महद्धिरण्या विवरं प्रविष्टाः स्म पिपासिताः ।
इमांस्त्वेवं विधान्भावान् विविधानद्भुतोपमान् ।
दृष्ट्वा वयं प्रव्यथिताः संभ्रान्ता नष्टचेतसः ॥३॥
3. mahaddhiraṇyā vivaraṃ praviṣṭāḥ sma pipāsitāḥ ,
imāṃstvevaṃ vidhānbhāvān vividhānadbhutopamān ,
dṛṣṭvā vayaṃ pravyathitāḥ saṃbhrāntā naṣṭacetasaḥ.
3. mahat hiraṇyā vivaram praviṣṭāḥ sma
pipāsitāḥ imān tu evam vidhān bhāvān
vividhān adbhutopamān dṛṣṭvā vayam
pravyathitāḥ saṃbhrāntāḥ naṣṭacetasaḥ
3. pipāsitāḥ vayam mahat hiraṇyā vivaram
praviṣṭāḥ sma tu imān evam vidhān
vividhān adbhutopamān bhāvān dṛṣṭvā vayam
pravyathitāḥ saṃbhrāntāḥ naṣṭacetasaḥ
3. Being thirsty, we entered a great cavity (or passage) filled with gold. But seeing these various things, wondrous to behold, we became greatly agitated, bewildered, and lost our senses.
कस्येमे काञ्चना वृक्षास्तरुणादित्यसंनिभाः ।
शुचीन्यभ्यवहार्याणि मूलानि च फलानि च ॥४॥
4. kasyeme kāñcanā vṛkṣāstaruṇādityasaṃnibhāḥ ,
śucīnyabhyavahāryāṇi mūlāni ca phalāni ca.
4. kasya ime kāñcanāḥ vṛkṣāḥ taruṇādityasaṃnibhāḥ
śucīni abhyavahāryāṇi mūlāni ca phalāni ca
4. kasya ime taruṇādityasaṃnibhāḥ kāñcanāḥ vṛkṣāḥ
ca kasya śucīni abhyavahāryāṇi mūlāni ca phalāni
4. Whose are these golden trees, resembling the rising sun? And whose are these pure, edible roots and fruits?
काञ्चनानि विमानानि राजतानि गृहाणि च ।
तपनीय गवाक्षाणि मणिजालावृतानि च ॥५॥
5. kāñcanāni vimānāni rājatāni gṛhāṇi ca ,
tapanīya gavākṣāṇi maṇijālāvṛtāni ca.

tapanīyagavākṣāṇi maṇijālāvṛtāni ca
5. kāñcanāni vimānāni,
rājatāni gṛhāṇi ca,

5. Golden aerial chariots, silver houses, windows made of gold, and (also) adorned with nets of jewels.
पुष्पिताः फालवन्तश्च पुण्याः सुरभिगन्धिनः ।
इमे जाम्बूनदमयाः पादपाः कस्य तेजसा ॥६॥
6. puṣpitāḥ phālavantaśca puṇyāḥ surabhigandhinaḥ ,
ime jāmbūnadamayāḥ pādapāḥ kasya tejasā.
6. puṣpitāḥ phalavantaḥ ca puṇyāḥ surabhigandhinaḥ
ime jāmbūnadamayāḥ pādapāḥ kasya tejasā
6. ime jāmbūnadamayāḥ pādapāḥ puṣpitāḥ phalavantaḥ

6. These trees, which are made of gold, blossomed, fruit-bearing, pure, and fragrant, by whose splendor (tejas) do they exist?
काञ्चनानि च पद्मानि जातानि विमले जले ।
कथं मत्स्याश्च सौवर्णा चरन्ति सह कच्छपैः ॥७॥
7. kāñcanāni ca padmāni jātāni vimale jale ,
kathaṃ matsyāśca sauvarṇā caranti saha kacchapaiḥ.
7. kāñcanāni ca padmāni jātāni vimale jale katham
matsyāḥ ca sauvarṇāḥ caranti saha kacchapaiḥ
7. katham kāñcanāni padmāni ca vimale jale jātāni (bhavanti)?
katham sauvarṇāḥ matsyāḥ ca kacchapaiḥ saha caranti?
7. How do golden lotuses (padma) grow in pure water? And how do golden fish move together with tortoises?
आत्मानमनुभावं च कस्य चैतत्तपोबलम् ।
अजानतां नः सर्वेषां सर्वमाख्यातुमर्हसि ॥८॥
8. ātmānamanubhāvaṃ ca kasya caitattapobalam ,
ajānatāṃ naḥ sarveṣāṃ sarvamākhyātumarhasi.
8. ātmānam anubhāvam ca kasya ca etat tapaḥbalam
ajānatām naḥ sarveṣām sarvam ākhyātum arhasi
8. (tvam) naḥ sarveṣām ajānatām ātmānam ca anubhāvam
ca etat kasya tapaḥbalam sarvam ākhyātum arhasi
8. You ought to explain everything to us, all who are ignorant, regarding your own true self (ātman), your greatness, and whose ascetic power (tapas) this is.
एवमुक्ता हनुमता तापसी धर्मचारिणी ।
प्रत्युवाच हनूमन्तं सर्वभूतहिते रता ॥९॥
9. evamuktā hanumatā tāpasī dharmacāriṇī ,
pratyuvāca hanūmantaṃ sarvabhūtahite ratā.
9. evam uktā hanumatā tapasī dharmacāriṇī |
pratyuvāca hanūmantaṃ sarvabhūtahite ratā
9. hanumatā evam uktā tapasī dharmacāriṇī
sarvabhūtahite ratā hanūmantaṃ pratyuvāca
9. Thus addressed by Hanumat, the female ascetic, who was diligent in her observance of righteousness (dharma) and devoted to the welfare of all beings, replied to Hanumat.
मयो नाम महातेजा मायावी दानवर्षभः ।
तेनेदं निर्मितं सर्वं मायया काञ्चनं वनम् ॥१०॥
10. mayo nāma mahātejā māyāvī dānavarṣabhaḥ ,
tenedaṃ nirmitaṃ sarvaṃ māyayā kāñcanaṃ vanam.
10. mayaḥ nāma mahātejā māyāvī dānava ṛṣabhaḥ |
tena idam nirmitam sarvam māyayā kāñcanam vanam
10. mahātejā māyāvī dānavarṣabhaḥ nāma mayaḥ tena
idaṃ sarvaṃ kāñcanaṃ vanaṃ māyayā nirmitam
10. A greatly effulgent master of illusion (māyā) and foremost among the dānavas, named Maya, created this entire golden forest by means of his illusory power (māyā).
पुरा दानवमुख्यानां विश्वकर्मा बभूव ह ।
येनेदं काञ्चनं दिव्यं निर्मितं भवनोत्तमम् ॥११॥
11. purā dānavamukhyānāṃ viśvakarmā babhūva ha ,
yenedaṃ kāñcanaṃ divyaṃ nirmitaṃ bhavanottamam.
11. purā dānava mukhyānām viśvakarmā babhūva ha | yena
idam kāñcanam divyam nirmitam bhavana uttamam
11. purā ha viśvakarmā dānavamukhyānām babhūva yena
idaṃ kāñcanaṃ divyaṃ bhavanottamam nirmitam
11. Indeed, Viśvakarmā, the divine architect, formerly served the chiefs of the dānavas; it was by him that this excellent, divine, golden palace was constructed.
स तु वर्षसहस्राणि तपस्तप्त्वा महावने ।
पितामहाद्वरं लेभे सर्वमौशसनं धनम् ॥१२॥
12. sa tu varṣasahasrāṇi tapastaptvā mahāvane ,
pitāmahādvaraṃ lebhe sarvamauśasanaṃ dhanam.
12. sa tu varṣa sahasrāṇi tapaḥ taptvā mahāvane |
pitāmahāt varam lebhe sarvam auśasanam dhanam
12. tu saḥ mahāvane varṣasahasrāṇi tapaḥ taptvā
pitāmahāt auśasanaṃ sarvaṃ dhanaṃ varaṃ lebhe
12. But he, having performed severe asceticism (tapas) for thousands of years in a great forest, received a boon from Pitāmaha (Brahmā): all the wealth of Uśanas (Śukrācārya).
विधाय सर्वं बलवान् सर्वकामेश्वरस्तदा ।
उवास सुखितः कालं कं चिदस्मिन्महावने ॥१३॥
13. vidhāya sarvaṃ balavān sarvakāmeśvarastadā ,
uvāsa sukhitaḥ kālaṃ kaṃ cidasminmahāvane.
13. vidhāya sarvam balavān sarvakāmeśvaraḥ tadā
uvāsa sukhitaḥ kālam kam cit asmin mahāvane
13. balavān sarvakāmeśvaraḥ sarvam vidhāya tadā
sukhitaḥ kam cit kālam asmin mahāvane uvāsa
13. Having accomplished everything, the powerful lord of all desires then dwelled happily for some time in this great forest.
तमप्सरसि हेमायां सक्तं दानवपुंगवम् ।
विक्रम्यैवाशनिं गृह्य जघानेशः पुरंदरः ॥१४॥
14. tamapsarasi hemāyāṃ saktaṃ dānavapuṃgavam ,
vikramyaivāśaniṃ gṛhya jaghāneśaḥ puraṃdaraḥ.
14. tam apsarasi hemāyām saktam dānavapuṃgavam
vikramya eva aśanim gṛhya jaghāna īśaḥ purandaraḥ
14. īśaḥ purandaraḥ eva vikramya aśanim gṛhya tam
apsarasi hemāyām saktam dānavapuṃgavam jaghāna
14. Indra (Purandara), the lord, powerfully seized his thunderbolt and struck that chief of Dānavas who was attached to the Apsaras Hemā.
इदं च ब्रह्मणा दत्तं हेमायै वनमुत्तमम् ।
शाश्वतः कामभोगश्च गृहं चेदं हिरण्मयम् ॥१५॥
15. idaṃ ca brahmaṇā dattaṃ hemāyai vanamuttamam ,
śāśvataḥ kāmabhogaśca gṛhaṃ cedaṃ hiraṇmayam.
15. idam ca brahmaṇā dattam hemāyai vanam uttamam
śāśvataḥ kāmabhogaḥ ca gṛham ca idam hiraṇmayam
15. idam uttamam vanam ca brahmaṇā hemāyai dattam
ca śāśvataḥ kāmabhogaḥ ca idam hiraṇmayam gṛham
15. This excellent forest was given by Brahmā to Hemā, along with eternal enjoyment of desires (kāma-bhoga) and this golden house.
दुहिता मेरुसावर्णेरहं तस्याः स्वयं प्रभा ।
इदं रक्षामि भवनं हेमाया वानरोत्तम ॥१६॥
16. duhitā merusāvarṇerahaṃ tasyāḥ svayaṃ prabhā ,
idaṃ rakṣāmi bhavanaṃ hemāyā vānarottama.
16. duhitā merusāvarṇeḥ aham tasyāḥ svayam prabhā
idam rakṣāmi bhavanam hemāyāḥ vānarottama
16. vānarottama,
aham merusāvarṇeḥ tasyāḥ duhitā svayamprabhā (asmi) (aham) idam hemāyāḥ bhavanam rakṣāmi
16. O best of Vānarās, I am Svayaṃprabhā, the daughter of Merusāvarṇi. I protect this dwelling of Hemā.
मम प्रियसखी हेमा नृत्तगीतविशारदा ।
तया दत्तवरा चास्मि रक्षामि भवनोत्तमम् ॥१७॥
17. mama priyasakhī hemā nṛttagītaviśāradā ,
tayā dattavarā cāsmi rakṣāmi bhavanottamam.
17. mama priyasakhī hemā nṛttagītaviśāradā tayā
dattavarā ca asmi rakṣāmi bhavana uttamam
17. mama priyasakhī hemā nṛttagītaviśāradā tayā
dattavarā ca asmi bhavana uttamam rakṣāmi
17. My dear friend Hema is skilled in dance and song. I have been granted a boon by her, and I protect this excellent dwelling.
किं कार्यं कस्य वा हेतोः कान्ताराणि प्रपद्यथ ।
कथं चेदं वनं दुर्गं युष्माभिरुपलक्षितम् ॥१८॥
18. kiṃ kāryaṃ kasya vā hetoḥ kāntārāṇi prapadyatha ,
kathaṃ cedaṃ vanaṃ durgaṃ yuṣmābhirupalakṣitam.
18. kim kāryam kasya vā hetoḥ kāntārāṇi prapadyatha
katham ca idam vanam durgam yuṣmābhiḥ upalakṣitam
18. kim kāryam vā hetoḥ kasya kāntārāṇi prapadyatha
ca katham yuṣmābhiḥ idam durgam vanam upalakṣitam
18. What is your purpose, or for what reason have you entered these wildernesses? And how did you perceive this difficult forest?
इमान्यभ्यवहार्याणि मूलानि च फलानि च ।
भुक्त्वा पीत्वा च पानीयं सर्वं मे वक्तुमर्हथ ॥१९॥
19. imānyabhyavahāryāṇi mūlāni ca phalāni ca ,
bhuktvā pītvā ca pānīyaṃ sarvaṃ me vaktumarhatha.
19. imāni abhyavahāryāṇi mūlāni ca phalāni ca
bhuktvā pītvā ca pānīyam sarvam me vaktum arhatha
19. imāni abhyavahāryāṇi mūlāni ca phalāni ca
bhuktvā ca pānīyam pītvā me sarvam vaktum arhatha
19. Having eaten these edible roots and fruits, and having drunk water, you should tell me everything.
