नारदस्य तु तद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वामृतमयं यथा ।
प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे लक्ष्मणं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. nāradasya tu tadvākyaṃ śrutvāmṛtamayaṃ yathā ,
praharṣamatulaṃ lebhe lakṣmaṇaṃ cedamabravīt.

praharṣam atulam lebhe lakṣmaṇam ca idam abravīt
1. Having heard that speech of Nārada, which was like nectar, he attained unequalled joy and spoke this to Lakṣmaṇa.
गच्छ सौम्य द्विजश्रेष्ठं समाश्वासय लक्ष्मण ।
बालस्य च शरीरं तत्तैलद्रोण्यां निधापय ॥२॥
2. gaccha saumya dvijaśreṣṭhaṃ samāśvāsaya lakṣmaṇa ,
bālasya ca śarīraṃ tattailadroṇyāṃ nidhāpaya.
2. gaccha saumya dvijaśreṣṭham samāśvāsaya lakṣmaṇa
bālasya ca śarīram tat tailadroṇyām nidhāpaya
2. saumya lakṣmaṇa dvijaśreṣṭham gaccha samāśvāsaya

2. Go, gentle Lakṣmaṇa, and comfort the eminent brāhmaṇa. And have that child's body placed in an oil vat.
गन्धैश्च परमोदारैस्तैलैश्च सुसुगन्धिभिः ।
यथा न क्षीयते बालस्तथा सौम्य विधीयताम् ॥३॥
3. gandhaiśca paramodāraistailaiśca susugandhibhiḥ ,
yathā na kṣīyate bālastathā saumya vidhīyatām.
3. gandhaiḥ ca paramodāraiḥ tailaiḥ ca susugandhibhiḥ
yathā na kṣīyate bālaḥ tathā saumya vidhīyatām
3. saumya gandhaiḥ ca paramodāraiḥ susugandhibhiḥ

3. And with highly excellent fragrances and very fragrant oils, gentle one, ensure that the child does not decay.
यथा शरीरे बालस्य गुप्तस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः ।
विपत्तिः परिभेदो वा भवेन्न च तथा कुरु ॥४॥
4. yathā śarīre bālasya guptasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ,
vipattiḥ paribhedo vā bhavenna ca tathā kuru.
4. yathā śarīre bālasya guptasya akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ
vipattiḥ paribhedaḥ vā bhaven na ca tathā kuru
4. yathā guptasya akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ bālasya śarīre
vipattiḥ vā paribhedaḥ na ca bhaven tathā kuru
4. And act in such a way that no harm or decomposition occurs to the body of the child, who is protected and whose actions are pure.
तथा संदिश्य काकुत्स्थो लक्ष्मणं शुभलक्षणम् ।
मनसा पुष्पकं दध्यावागच्छेति महायशाः ॥५॥
5. tathā saṃdiśya kākutstho lakṣmaṇaṃ śubhalakṣaṇam ,
manasā puṣpakaṃ dadhyāvāgaccheti mahāyaśāḥ.
5. tathā saṃdiśya kākutsthaḥ lakṣmaṇam śubhalakṣaṇam
manasā puṣpakam dadhyau āgaccha iti mahāyaśāḥ
5. mahāyaśāḥ kākutsthaḥ tathā śubhalakṣaṇam lakṣmaṇam

5. Having thus instructed Lakṣmaṇa, who bore auspicious marks, the greatly renowned Kakutstha (Rāma) contemplated the Puṣpaka (aerial chariot) in his mind, saying, 'Come!'
इङ्गितं स तु विज्ञाय पुष्पको हेमभूषितः ।
आजगाम मुहूर्तेन संपीपं राघवस्य वै ॥६॥
6. iṅgitaṃ sa tu vijñāya puṣpako hemabhūṣitaḥ ,
ājagāma muhūrtena saṃpīpaṃ rāghavasya vai.
6. iṅgitam saḥ tu vijñāya puṣpakaḥ hemabhūṣitaḥ
ājagāma muhūrtena saṃpīpam rāghavasya vai
6. saḥ hemabhūṣitaḥ puṣpakaḥ iṅgitam tu vijñāya
muhūrtena rāghavasya saṃpīpam vai ājagāma
6. Having understood his signal, the Puṣpaka (aerial vehicle), adorned with gold, arrived near Rāghava (Rāma) in an instant.
सो ऽब्रवीत् प्रणतो भूत्वा अयमस्मि नराधिप ।
वश्यस्तव महाबाहो किंकरः समुपस्थितः ॥७॥
7. so'bravīt praṇato bhūtvā ayamasmi narādhipa ,
vaśyastava mahābāho kiṃkaraḥ samupasthitaḥ.
7. saḥ abravīt praṇataḥ bhūtvā ayam asmi narādhipa
vaśyaḥ tava mahābāho kiṃkaraḥ samupasthitaḥ
7. saḥ praṇataḥ bhūtvā abravīt narādhipa mahābāho
ayam asmi tava vaśyaḥ kiṃkaraḥ samupasthitaḥ
7. Having prostrated, it spoke, "Here I am, O king, O mighty-armed one! Your obedient servant is present."
भाषितं रुचिरं श्रुत्वा पुष्पकस्य नराधिपः ।
अभिवाद्य महर्षीस्तान् विमानं सो ऽध्यरोहत ॥८॥
8. bhāṣitaṃ ruciraṃ śrutvā puṣpakasya narādhipaḥ ,
abhivādya maharṣīstān vimānaṃ so'dhyarohata.
8. bhāṣitam ruchiram śrutvā puṣpakasya narādhipaḥ
abhivādya maharṣīn tān vimānam saḥ adhyarohata
8. puṣpakasya ruchiram bhāṣitam śrutvā narādhipaḥ
tān maharṣīn abhivādya saḥ vimānam adhyarohata
8. Having heard the pleasant words of the Puṣpaka, the king (Rāma), after saluting those great sages, ascended the aerial vehicle.
धनुर्गृहीत्वा तूणीं च खग्दं च रुचिरप्रभम् ।
निक्षिप्य नगरे वीरौ सौमित्रिभरताव् उभौ ॥९॥
9. dhanurgṛhītvā tūṇīṃ ca khagdaṃ ca ruciraprabham ,
nikṣipya nagare vīrau saumitribharatāv ubhau.
9. dhanuḥ gṛhītvā tūṇīm ca khaḍgam ca ruchiraprabham
nikṣipya nagare vīrau saumitribharatau ubhau
9. dhanuḥ ca tūṇīm ca ruchiraprabham khaḍgam gṛhītvā
ubhau vīrau saumitribharatau nagare nikṣipya
9. Having taken his bow, quiver, and the brightly shining sword, and having left both heroes, Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa) and Bharata, in the city (Ayodhyā).
प्रायात् प्रतीचीं स मरून् विचिन्वंश्च समन्ततः ।
उत्तरामगमच्छ्रीमान्दिशं हिमवदावृतम् ॥१०॥
10. prāyāt pratīcīṃ sa marūn vicinvaṃśca samantataḥ ,
uttarāmagamacchrīmāndiśaṃ himavadāvṛtam.
10. prāyāt pratīcīm saḥ marūn vicinvan ca samantataḥ
uttarām agamat śrīmān diśam himavadāvṛtam
10. saḥ pratīcīm diśam marūn samantataḥ vicinvan ca
prāyāt śrīmān uttarām diśam himavadāvṛtam agamat
10. He went to the west, searching through the deserts all around. Then, that glorious one proceeded to the northern region, which is covered by the Himalayas.
अपश्यमानस्तत्रापि स्वल्पमप्यथ दुष्कृतम् ।
पूर्वामपि दिशं सर्वामथापश्यन्नराधिपः ॥११॥
11. apaśyamānastatrāpi svalpamapyatha duṣkṛtam ,
pūrvāmapi diśaṃ sarvāmathāpaśyannarādhipaḥ.
11. apaśyamānaḥ tatra api svalpam api atha duṣkṛtam
pūrvām api diśam sarvām atha apaśyat narādhipaḥ
11. tatra api svalpam api duṣkṛtam apaśyamānaḥ atha
narādhipaḥ sarvām pūrvām diśam api atha apaśyat
11. Even there (in the northern region), not finding even a slight misdeed, the king then searched the entire eastern region as well, but found nothing.
दक्षिणां दिशमाक्रामत्ततो राजर्षिनन्दनः ।
शैवलस्योत्तरे पार्श्वे ददर्श सुमहत् सरः ॥१२॥
12. dakṣiṇāṃ diśamākrāmattato rājarṣinandanaḥ ,
śaivalasyottare pārśve dadarśa sumahat saraḥ.
12. dakṣiṇām diśam ākrāmat tataḥ rājarṣinandanaḥ
śaivalasya uttare pārśve dadarśa sumahat saraḥ
12. tataḥ rājarṣinandanaḥ dakṣiṇām diśam ākrāmat
śaivalasya uttare pārśve sumahat saraḥ dadarśa
12. Then, the son of the royal sage (rājarṣi) proceeded to the southern region. On the northern side of (Mount) Shaivala, he saw a very large lake.
तस्मिन् सरसि तप्यन्तं तापसं सुमहत्तपः ।
ददर्श राघवः श्रीमांल् लम्बमानमधो मुखम् ॥१३॥
13. tasmin sarasi tapyantaṃ tāpasaṃ sumahattapaḥ ,
dadarśa rāghavaḥ śrīmāṃl lambamānamadho mukham.
13. tasmin sarasi tapyantam tāpasam sumahat tapaḥ
dadarśa rāghavaḥ śrīmān lambamānam adhomukham
13. śrīmān rāghavaḥ tasmin sarasi sumahat tapaḥ
tapyantam adhomukham lambamānam tāpasam dadarśa
13. In that lake, the glorious Rāghava saw an ascetic practicing very severe austerities (tapas), hanging head downwards.
अथैनं समुपागम्य तप्यन्तं तप उत्तमम् ।
उवाच राघवो वाक्यं धन्यस्त्वमसि सुव्रत ॥१४॥
14. athainaṃ samupāgamya tapyantaṃ tapa uttamam ,
uvāca rāghavo vākyaṃ dhanyastvamasi suvrata.
14. atha enam samupāgamya tapyantam tapaḥ uttamam
uvāca rāghavaḥ vākyam dhanyaḥ tvam asi suvrata
14. atha rāghavaḥ uttamam tapaḥ tapyantam enam
samupāgamya vākyam uvāca suvrata tvam dhanyaḥ asi
14. Then, having approached him who was performing excellent austerity (tapas), Rāghava spoke these words: "You are blessed, O virtuous one."
कस्यां योन्यां तपोवृद्धवर्तसे दृढविक्रम ।
कौतूहलात्त्वां पृच्छामि रामो दाशरथिर्ह्यहम् ॥१५॥
15. kasyāṃ yonyāṃ tapovṛddhavartase dṛḍhavikrama ,
kautūhalāttvāṃ pṛcchāmi rāmo dāśarathirhyaham.
15. kasyām yonyām tapovṛddha vartase dṛḍhavikrama
kautūhalāt tvām pṛcchāmi rāmaḥ dāśarathiḥ hi aham
15. tapovṛddha dṛḍhavikrama kasyām yonyām vartase
aham hi dāśarathiḥ rāmaḥ kautūhalāt tvām pṛcchāmi
15. O one advanced in austerity (tapas) and of firm valor, in what origin are you dwelling? I ask you out of curiosity, for I am Rāma, the son of Daśaratha.
मनीषितस्ते को न्वर्थः स्वर्गलाभो वराश्रयः ।
यमश्रित्य तपस्तप्तं श्रोतुमिच्छामि तापस ॥१६॥
16. manīṣitaste ko nvarthaḥ svargalābho varāśrayaḥ ,
yamaśritya tapastaptaṃ śrotumicchāmi tāpasa.
16. manīṣitaḥ te kaḥ nu arthaḥ svargalābhaḥ vā varāśrayaḥ
yam āśritya tapaḥ taptam śrotum icchāmi tāpasa
16. tāpasa te manīṣitaḥ kaḥ nu arthaḥ svargalābhaḥ vā
varāśrayaḥ yam āśritya tapaḥ taptam śrotum icchāmi
16. O ascetic, what purpose is desired by you? Is it the attainment of heaven, or a superior refuge? I wish to hear with what intention you have performed this austerity (tapas).
ब्राह्मणो वासि भद्रं ते क्षत्रियो वासि दुर्जयः ।
वैश्यो वा यदि वा शूद्रः सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥१७॥
17. brāhmaṇo vāsi bhadraṃ te kṣatriyo vāsi durjayaḥ ,
vaiśyo vā yadi vā śūdraḥ satyametadbravīhi me.
17. brāhmaṇaḥ vā asi bhadram te kṣatriyaḥ vā asi durjayaḥ
vaiśyaḥ vā yadi vā śūdraḥ satyam etat bravīhi me
17. bhadram te brāhmaṇaḥ vā asi vā durjayaḥ kṣatriyaḥ
asi vā vaiśyaḥ yadi vā śūdraḥ etat satyam me bravīhi
17. Are you a brāhmaṇa, or an unconquerable kṣatriya? Or are you a vaiśya, or if you are a śūdra? May good fortune be to you. Tell me this truth.
