तच्छ्रुत्वा निपुणं सर्वं भरतः सह मन्त्रिभिः ।

2. abravījjananīḥ sarvā iha tena mahātmanā ,
śarvarī śayitā bhūmāvidamasya vimarditam.

2. He then said to all the mothers: 'Here, that great soul (ātman) spent the night sleeping on the ground, and this spot was pressed down by him.'
महाभागकुलीनेन महाभागेन धीमता ।
जातो दशरथेनोर्व्यां न रामः स्वप्तुमर्हति ॥३॥
3. mahābhāgakulīnena mahābhāgena dhīmatā ,
jāto daśarathenorvyāṃ na rāmaḥ svaptumarhati.

3. Rama, who is of a great and noble family, highly fortunate, and intelligent, and who was born of Dasaratha on this earth, should not have to sleep.
अजिनोत्तरसंस्तीर्णे वरास्तरणसंचये ।
शयित्वा पुरुषव्याघ्रः कथं शेते महीतले ॥४॥
4. ajinottarasaṃstīrṇe varāstaraṇasaṃcaye ,
śayitvā puruṣavyāghraḥ kathaṃ śete mahītale.

4. Having previously slept on excellent piles of bedding, covered with deer skins, how can this tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra) now sleep on the bare ground?
प्रासादाग्र विमानेषु वलभीषु च सर्वदा ।
हैमराजतभौमेषु वरास्तरणशालिषु ॥५॥
5. prāsādāgra vimāneṣu valabhīṣu ca sarvadā ,
haimarājatabhaumeṣu varāstaraṇaśāliṣu.

5. He always [slept] in the highest points of palaces, in aerial mansions (vimāna), and in balconies, in rooms with floors of gold and silver, adorned with excellent coverings.
पुष्पसंचयचित्रेषु चन्दनागरुगन्धिषु ।
पाण्डुराभ्रप्रकाशेषु शुकसंघरुतेषु च ॥६॥
6. puṣpasaṃcayacitreṣu candanāgarugandhiṣu ,
pāṇḍurābhraprakāśeṣu śukasaṃgharuteṣu ca.

6. They were also adorned with diverse arrangements of flowers, fragrant with sandalwood and agarwood, shining like pale clouds, and filled with the sounds of parrot flocks.
गीतवादित्रनिर्घोषैर्वराभरणनिःस्वनैः ।
मृदङ्गवरशब्दैश्च सततं प्रतिबोधितः ॥७॥
7. gītavāditranirghoṣairvarābharaṇaniḥsvanaiḥ ,
mṛdaṅgavaraśabdaiśca satataṃ pratibodhitaḥ.

7. He was constantly awakened by the sounds of songs and musical instruments, by the jingling of exquisite ornaments, and by the excellent beats of the mṛdaṅga drums.
बन्दिभिर्वन्दितः काले बहुभिः सूतमागधैः ।
गाथाभिरनुरूपाभिः स्तुतिभिश्च परंतपः ॥८॥
8. bandibhirvanditaḥ kāle bahubhiḥ sūtamāgadhaiḥ ,
gāthābhiranurūpābhiḥ stutibhiśca paraṃtapaḥ.
8. bandibhiḥ vanditaḥ kāle bahubhiḥ sūtamāgadhaiḥ
gāthābhiḥ anurūpābhiḥ stutibhiḥ ca paraṃtapaḥ

8. The scorcher of foes was praised at the proper time by many bards and panegyrists with fitting songs and eulogies.
अश्रद्धेयमिदं लोके न सत्यं प्रतिभाति मा ।
मुह्यते खलु मे भावः स्वप्नो ऽयमिति मे मतिः ॥९॥
9. aśraddheyamidaṃ loke na satyaṃ pratibhāti mā ,
muhyate khalu me bhāvaḥ svapno'yamiti me matiḥ.
9. aśraddheyam idam loke na satyam pratibhāti mā
muhyate khalu me bhāvaḥ svapnaḥ ayam iti me matiḥ
9. loke idam aśraddheyam mā na satyam pratibhāti
khalu me bhāvaḥ muhyate me matiḥ ayam svapnaḥ iti
9. This in the world is unbelievable and does not appear true to me. My state of mind (bhāva) is indeed bewildered, and my thought (mati) is that this must be a dream.
न नूनं दैवतं किं चित् कालेन बलवत्तरम् ।
यत्र दाशरथी रामो भूमावेवं शयीत सः ॥१०॥
10. na nūnaṃ daivataṃ kiṃ cit kālena balavattaram ,
yatra dāśarathī rāmo bhūmāvevaṃ śayīta saḥ.
10. na nūnam daivatam kim cit kālena balavattaram
yatra dāśarathī rāmaḥ bhūmau evam śayīta saḥ
10. nūnam kālena daivatam kim cit balavattaram na
yatra dāśarathī rāmaḥ saḥ evam bhūmau śayīta
10. Surely, no divine power (daivata) is stronger than Time, in a situation where Rama, the son of Dasaratha, would thus lie on the ground.
विदेहराजस्य सुता सीता च प्रियदर्शना ।
दयिता शयिता भूमौ स्नुषा दशरथस्य च ॥११॥
11. videharājasya sutā sītā ca priyadarśanā ,
dayitā śayitā bhūmau snuṣā daśarathasya ca.

11. And Sita, the daughter of the king of Videha, beautiful to behold, the beloved one, and also Dasaratha's daughter-in-law, lies on the ground.
इयं शय्या मम भ्रातुरिदं हि परिवर्तितम् ।
स्थण्डिले कठिने सर्वं गात्रैर्विमृदितं तृणम् ॥१२॥
12. iyaṃ śayyā mama bhrāturidaṃ hi parivartitam ,
sthaṇḍile kaṭhine sarvaṃ gātrairvimṛditaṃ tṛṇam.
12. iyam śayyā mama bhrātuḥ idam hi parivartitam
sthaṇḍile kaṭhine sarvam gātraiḥ vimṛditam tṛṇam
12. iyam mama bhrātuḥ śayyā hi idam parivartitam
kaṭhine sthaṇḍile sarvam tṛṇam gātraiḥ vimṛditam
12. This bed belongs to my brother. Indeed, it has been displaced, and all the grass on the hard ground has been crushed by his limbs.
मन्ये साभरणा सुप्ता सीतास्मिञ् शयने तदा ।
तत्र तत्र हि दृश्यन्ते सक्ताः कनकबिन्दवः ॥१३॥
13. manye sābharaṇā suptā sītāsmiñ śayane tadā ,
tatra tatra hi dṛśyante saktāḥ kanakabindavaḥ.
13. manye sābharaṇā suptā sītā asmin śayane tadā
tatra tatra hi dṛśyante saktāḥ kanakabindavaḥ
13. manye sābharaṇā suptā sītā tadā asmin śayane

13. I believe that Sītā, adorned with her ornaments, slept on this bed then. Indeed, particles of gold are seen clinging here and there.
उत्तरीयमिहासक्तं सुव्यक्तं सीतया तदा ।
तथा ह्येते प्रकाशन्ते सक्ताः कौशेयतन्तवः ॥१४॥
14. uttarīyamihāsaktaṃ suvyaktaṃ sītayā tadā ,
tathā hyete prakāśante saktāḥ kauśeyatantavaḥ.
14. uttariyam iha āsaktam suvyaktam sītayā tadā
tathā hi ete prakāśante saktāḥ kauśeyatantavaḥ
14. tadā sītayā uttariyam iha suvyaktam āsaktam
tathā hi ete saktāḥ kauśeyatantavaḥ prakāśante
14. An upper garment (uttarīya) was clearly left here by Sītā then. Indeed, thus these attached silk threads are visible.
मन्ये भर्तुः सुखा शय्या येन बाला तपस्विनी ।
सुकुमारी सती दुःखं न विजानाति मैथिली ॥१५॥
15. manye bhartuḥ sukhā śayyā yena bālā tapasvinī ,
sukumārī satī duḥkhaṃ na vijānāti maithilī.

sukumārī satī duḥkham na vijānāti maithilī

15. I believe that the husband's bed is so comfortable that because of it, the delicate, ascetic girl, Maithilī, does not experience suffering.
सार्वभौम कुले जातः सर्वलोकसुखावहः ।
सर्वलोकप्रियस्त्यक्त्वा राज्यं प्रियमनुत्तमम् ॥१६॥
16. sārvabhauma kule jātaḥ sarvalokasukhāvahaḥ ,
sarvalokapriyastyaktvā rājyaṃ priyamanuttamam.

sarvalokapriyaḥ tyaktvā rājyam priyam anuttamam
16. sārvabhauma kule jātaḥ sarvalokasukāvahaḥ

16. Born in a family of universal sovereigns, bringing happiness to all people, and beloved by all, having abandoned his most cherished and unparalleled kingdom...
कथमिन्दीवरश्यामो रक्ताक्षः प्रियदर्शनः ।
सुखभागी च दुःखार्हः शयितो भुवि राघवः ॥१७॥
17. kathamindīvaraśyāmo raktākṣaḥ priyadarśanaḥ ,
sukhabhāgī ca duḥkhārhaḥ śayito bhuvi rāghavaḥ.
17. katham indīvaraśyāmaḥ raktākṣaḥ priyadarśanaḥ
sukhabhāgī ca duḥkhārhaḥ śayitaḥ bhuvi rāghavaḥ
17. katham rāghavaḥ indīvaraśyāmaḥ raktākṣaḥ
priyadarśanaḥ sukhabhāgī ca duḥkhārhaḥ bhuvi śayitaḥ
17. How can Rāghava, whose complexion is dark like a blue lotus, whose eyes are reddish, and whose appearance is pleasing, he who is accustomed to happiness yet undeserving of misery, now lie on the bare ground?
सिद्धार्था खलु वैदेही पतिं यानुगता वनम् ।
वयं संशयिताः सर्वे हीनास्तेन महात्मना ॥१८॥
18. siddhārthā khalu vaidehī patiṃ yānugatā vanam ,
vayaṃ saṃśayitāḥ sarve hīnāstena mahātmanā.
18. siddhārthā khalu vaidehī patim yā anugatā vanam
vayam saṃśayitāḥ sarve hīnāḥ tena mahātmanā
18. khalu vaidehī yā patim vanam anugatā siddhārthā
vayam sarve saṃśayitāḥ hīnāḥ tena mahātmanā
18. Indeed, Vaidehī (Sītā), who followed her husband into the forest, has surely achieved her purpose. But all of us are doubtful, abandoned by that great soul (ātman).
अकर्णधारा पृथिवी शून्येव प्रतिभाति मा ।
गते दशरथे स्वर्गे रामे चारण्यमाश्रिते ॥१९॥
19. akarṇadhārā pṛthivī śūnyeva pratibhāti mā ,
gate daśarathe svarge rāme cāraṇyamāśrite.
19. akarṇadhārā pṛthivī śūnyā iva pratibhāti mā
gate daśarathe svarge rāme ca araṇyam āśrite
19. mā pṛthivī pratibhāti śūnyā iva akarṇadhārā
daśarathe svarge gate ca rāme araṇyam āśrite
19. To me, the earth appears as if without a helmsman and empty, now that Daśaratha has gone to heaven and Rāma has resorted to the forest.
न च प्रार्थयते कश्चिन्मनसापि वसुंधराम् ।
वने ऽपि वसतस्तस्य बाहुवीर्याभिरक्षिताम् ॥२०॥
20. na ca prārthayate kaścinmanasāpi vasuṃdharām ,
vane'pi vasatastasya bāhuvīryābhirakṣitām.
20. na ca prārthayate kaścit manasā api vasundharām
vane api vasatas tasya bāhuvīryābhirakṣitām
20. kaścit manasā api vasundharām na ca prārthayate,
tasya vane api vasatas bāhuvīryābhirakṣitām
20. No one, not even mentally, would covet the earth, even if he were living in a forest, as long as it is protected by the might of his arms.
शून्यसंवरणारक्षामयन्त्रितहयद्विपाम् ।
अपावृतपुरद्वारां राजधानीमरक्षिताम् ॥२१॥
21. śūnyasaṃvaraṇārakṣāmayantritahayadvipām ,
apāvṛtapuradvārāṃ rājadhānīmarakṣitām.
21. śūnyasaṃvaraṇārakṣām ayantritahayadvipām
apāvṛtapuradvārām rājadhānīm arakṣitām
21. śūnyasaṃvaraṇārakṣām ayantritahayadvipām
apāvṛtapuradvārām arakṣitām rājadhānīm
21. A capital city (rājadhānī) that is devoid of defenses and guards, whose horses and elephants are uncontrolled, whose city gates are open, and which is entirely unprotected.
अप्रहृष्टबलां न्यूनां विषमस्थामनावृताम् ।
शत्रवो नाभिमन्यन्ते भक्ष्यान् विषकृतानिव ॥२२॥
22. aprahṛṣṭabalāṃ nyūnāṃ viṣamasthāmanāvṛtām ,
śatravo nābhimanyante bhakṣyān viṣakṛtāniva.
22. aprahṛṣṭabalām nyūnām viṣamasthām anāvṛtām
śatravaḥ na abhimanyante bhakṣyān viṣakṛtān iva
22. aprahṛṣṭabalām nyūnām viṣamasthām anāvṛtām (nagarām)
śatravaḥ viṣakṛtān bhakṣyān iva na abhimanyante
22. Enemies do not value such a city – one whose forces are disheartened, diminished, in a difficult position, and undefended – any more than they would poisoned food.
अद्य प्रभृति भूमौ तु शयिष्ये ऽहं तृणेषु वा ।
फलमूलाशनो नित्यं जटाचीराणि धारयन् ॥२३॥
23. adya prabhṛti bhūmau tu śayiṣye'haṃ tṛṇeṣu vā ,
phalamūlāśano nityaṃ jaṭācīrāṇi dhārayan.
23. adya prabhṛti bhūmau tu śayiṣye aham tṛṇeṣu
vā phalamūlāśanaḥ nityam jaṭācīrāṇi dhārayan
23. adya prabhṛti aham bhūmau vā tṛṇeṣu tu śayiṣye
phalamūlāśanaḥ nityam jaṭācīrāṇi dhārayan
23. From today onwards, I shall indeed sleep on the ground or on grass, constantly subsisting on fruits and roots, and wearing matted hair and bark garments.
तस्यार्थमुत्तरं कालं निवत्स्यामि सुखं वने ।
तं प्रतिश्रवमामुच्य नास्य मिथ्या भविष्यति ॥२४॥
24. tasyārthamuttaraṃ kālaṃ nivatsyāmi sukhaṃ vane ,
taṃ pratiśravamāmucya nāsya mithyā bhaviṣyati.
24. tasya artham uttaram kālam nivatsyāmi sukham vane
| tam pratiśravam āmucya na asya mithyā bhaviṣyati
24. tasya artham uttaram kālam sukham vane nivatsyāmi
tam pratiśravam āmucya asya mithyā na bhaviṣyati
24. For his sake, I will happily reside in the forest for the remaining period. Having made that promise, this promise of mine will not prove false.
वसन्तं भ्रातुरर्थाय शत्रुघ्नो मानुवत्स्यति ।
लक्ष्मणेन सह त्वार्यो अयोध्यां पालयिष्यति ॥२५॥
25. vasantaṃ bhrāturarthāya śatrughno mānuvatsyati ,
lakṣmaṇena saha tvāryo ayodhyāṃ pālayiṣyati.
25. vasantam bhrātuḥ arthāya śatrughnaḥ mā anuvatsyati
| lakṣmaṇena saha tu āryaḥ ayodhyām pālayiṣyati
25. śatrughnaḥ bhrātuḥ arthāya vasantam mā anuvatsyati
tu āryaḥ lakṣmaṇena saha ayodhyām pālayiṣyati
25. Shatrughna will reside with me, me dwelling in the forest for the sake of our brother (Rama). But the noble one (Rama), along with Lakshmana, will govern Ayodhya.
अभिषेक्ष्यन्ति काकुत्स्थमयोध्यायां द्विजातयः ।
अपि मे देवताः कुर्युरिमं सत्यं मनोरथम् ॥२६॥
26. abhiṣekṣyanti kākutsthamayodhyāyāṃ dvijātayaḥ ,
api me devatāḥ kuryurimaṃ satyaṃ manoratham.
26. abhiṣekṣyanti kākutstham ayodhyāyām dvijātayaḥ
| api me devatāḥ kuryuḥ imam satyam manoratham
26. dvijātayaḥ ayodhyāyām kākutstham abhiṣekṣyanti
api devatāḥ me imam manoratham satyam kuryuḥ
26. The Brahmins (dvijātayaḥ) will consecrate Kakutstha (Rama) in Ayodhya. May the gods also make this desire of mine true.
प्रसाद्यमानः शिरसा मया स्वयं बहुप्रकारं यदि न प्रपत्स्यते ।
ततो ऽनुवत्स्यामि चिराय राघवं वने वसन्नार्हति मामुपेक्षितुम् ॥२७॥
27. prasādyamānaḥ śirasā mayā svayaṃ bahuprakāraṃ yadi na prapatsyate ,
tato'nuvatsyāmi cirāya rāghavaṃ vane vasannārhati māmupekṣitum.
27. prasādyamānaḥ śirasā mayā svayam
bahuprakāram yadi na prapatsyate |
tataḥ anuvatsyāmi cirāya rāghavam
vane vasan na arhati mām upekṣitum
27. yadi mayā śirasā svayam bahuprakāram
prasādyamānaḥ na prapatsyate
tataḥ cirāya rāghavam vane anuvatsyāmi
vasan mām upekṣitum na arhati
27. If, though being implored by me personally in many ways with my bowed head, he (Rama) does not accept (my plea), then I will reside in the forest with Raghava (Rama) for a long time. For he, while dwelling (there), should not abandon me.
