ततो नारायणो विष्णुर्नियुक्तः सुरसत्तमैः ।
जानन्नपि सुरानेवं श्लक्ष्णं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. tato nārāyaṇo viṣṇurniyuktaḥ surasattamaiḥ ,

1. Then Narayana (Nārāyaṇa), who is Vishnu (Viṣṇu), although knowing everything, being requested by the foremost among the gods, spoke gentle words to the gods (suras) in this manner.
उपायः को वधे तस्य राक्षसाधिपतेः सुराः ।
यमहं तं समास्थाय निहन्यामृषिकण्टकम् ॥२॥
2. upāyaḥ ko vadhe tasya rākṣasādhipateḥ surāḥ ,
yamahaṃ taṃ samāsthāya nihanyāmṛṣikaṇṭakam.

2. "O gods (suras), what means (upāya) should I adopt to slay that lord of demons, who is a thorn to the sages (ṛṣis)?"
एवमुक्ताः सुराः सर्वे प्रत्यूचुर्विष्णुमव्ययम् ।
मानुषीं तनुमास्थाय रावणं जहि संयुगे ॥३॥
3. evamuktāḥ surāḥ sarve pratyūcurviṣṇumavyayam ,
mānuṣīṃ tanumāsthāya rāvaṇaṃ jahi saṃyuge.

3. Thus addressed, all the gods replied to the immutable Vishnu: 'Assuming a human form, kill Ravana in battle.'
स हि तेपे तपस्तीव्रं दीर्घकालमरिंदम ।
येन तुष्टो ऽभवद्ब्रह्मा लोककृल् लोकपूजितः ॥४॥
4. sa hi tepe tapastīvraṃ dīrghakālamariṃdama ,
yena tuṣṭo'bhavadbrahmā lokakṛl lokapūjitaḥ.
4. saḥ hi tepe tapaḥ tīvram dīrghakālam arindama
yena tuṣṭaḥ abhavat brahmā lokakṛt lokapūjitaḥ

4. Indeed, he (Ravana) performed intense austerity (tapas) for a long time. By this, Brahma, the creator of worlds and revered by all beings, became pleased.
संतुष्टः प्रददौ तस्मै राक्षसाय वरं प्रभुः ।
नानाविधेभ्यो भूतेभ्यो भयं नान्यत्र मानुषात् ॥५॥
5. saṃtuṣṭaḥ pradadau tasmai rākṣasāya varaṃ prabhuḥ ,
nānāvidhebhyo bhūtebhyo bhayaṃ nānyatra mānuṣāt.
5. saṃtuṣṭaḥ pradadau tasmai rākṣasāya varam prabhuḥ
nānāvidhebhyo bhūtebhyaḥ bhayam na anyatra mānuṣāt

5. The pleased Lord (Brahma) granted a boon (vara) to that demon (rākṣasa) (Ravana), that he would have no fear from various types of beings, except from a human.
अवज्ञाताः पुरा तेन वरदानेन मानवाः ।
तस्मात्तस्य वधो दृष्टो मानुषेभ्यः परंतप ॥६॥
6. avajñātāḥ purā tena varadānena mānavāḥ ,
tasmāttasya vadho dṛṣṭo mānuṣebhyaḥ paraṃtapa.
6. avajñātāḥ purā tena varadānena mānavāḥ tasmāt
tasya vadhaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ mānuṣebhyaḥ paraṃtapa

6. Previously, humans (mānava) were disregarded by him (Ravana) because of that granted boon (vara). Therefore, his killing (vadha) is foreseen from humans, O tormentor of foes.
इत्येतद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सुराणां विष्णुरात्मवान् ।
पितरं रोचयामास तदा दशरथं नृपम् ॥७॥
7. ityetadvacanaṃ śrutvā surāṇāṃ viṣṇurātmavān ,
pitaraṃ rocayāmāsa tadā daśarathaṃ nṛpam.
7. iti etat vacanam śrutvā surāṇām viṣṇuḥ ātmavān
pitaram rocayāmāsa tadā daśaratham nṛpam
7. surāṇām etat vacanam śrutvā ātmavān viṣṇuḥ
tadā nṛpam daśaratham pitaram rocayāmāsa iti
7. Having heard these words of the gods, Vishnu, the self-possessed (ātman), then chose King Dasharatha as his father.
स चाप्यपुत्रो नृपतिस्तस्मिन् काले महाद्युतिः ।
अयजत् पुत्रियामिष्टिं पुत्रेप्सुररिसूदनः ॥८॥
8. sa cāpyaputro nṛpatistasmin kāle mahādyutiḥ ,
ayajat putriyāmiṣṭiṃ putrepsurarisūdanaḥ.
8. saḥ ca api aputraḥ nṛpatiḥ tasmin kāle mahādyutiḥ
ayajat putriyām iṣṭim putrepsuḥ arisūdanaḥ
8. ca api saḥ aputraḥ mahādyutiḥ arisūdanaḥ nṛpatiḥ
tasmin kāle putrepsuḥ putriyām iṣṭim ayajat
8. And at that time, that illustrious king, a destroyer of enemies, who was without a son, desiring a son, performed a Vedic ritual (yajña) for offspring.
ततो वै यजमानस्य पावकादतुलप्रभम् ।
प्रादुर्भूतं महद्भूतं महावीर्यं महाबलम् ॥९॥
9. tato vai yajamānasya pāvakādatulaprabham ,
prādurbhūtaṃ mahadbhūtaṃ mahāvīryaṃ mahābalam.
9. tataḥ vai yajamānasya pāvakāt atulaprabham
prādurbhūtam mahat bhūtam mahāvīryam mahābalam
9. tataḥ vai yajamānasya pāvakāt atulaprabham

9. Then, indeed, from the fire, for the sacrificer, a great being, of unequalled splendor, great valor, and immense strength, manifested itself.
कृष्णं रक्ताम्बरधरं रक्तास्यं दुन्दुभिस्वनम् ।
स्निग्धहर्यक्षतनुजश्मश्रुप्रवरमूर्धजम् ॥१०॥
10. kṛṣṇaṃ raktāmbaradharaṃ raktāsyaṃ dundubhisvanam ,
snigdhaharyakṣatanujaśmaśrupravaramūrdhajam.
10. kṛṣṇam raktāmbaradharam raktāsyam dundubhisvanam
snigdhaharyakṣatanujaśmaśrupravaramūrdhajam
10. kṛṣṇam raktāmbaradharam raktāsyam dundubhisvanam

10. (That being was) dark-complexioned, wearing red garments, with a red face, and a voice like a war-drum; with glossy body-hair like a lion's mane, and excellent beard and head-hair.
शुभलक्षणसंपन्नं दिव्याभरणभूषितम् ।
शैलशृङ्गसमुत्सेधं दृप्तशार्दूलविक्रमम् ॥११॥
11. śubhalakṣaṇasaṃpannaṃ divyābharaṇabhūṣitam ,
śailaśṛṅgasamutsedhaṃ dṛptaśārdūlavikramam.

śailaśṛṅgasamutsedham dṛptaśārdūlavikramam

11. Endowed with auspicious marks, adorned with divine ornaments, towering like a mountain peak, and possessing the valor of a proud tiger.
दिवाकरसमाकारं दीप्तानलशिखोपमम् ।
तप्तजाम्बूनदमयीं राजतान्तपरिच्छदाम् ॥१२॥
12. divākarasamākāraṃ dīptānalaśikhopamam ,
taptajāmbūnadamayīṃ rājatāntaparicchadām.

12. (That being, appearing) like the sun, resembling a blazing flame of fire. (And he held) a vessel made of molten gold, with silver linings within.
दिव्यपायससंपूर्णां पात्रीं पत्नीमिव प्रियाम् ।
प्रगृह्य विपुलां दोर्भ्यां स्वयं मायामयीमिव ॥१३॥
13. divyapāyasasaṃpūrṇāṃ pātrīṃ patnīmiva priyām ,
pragṛhya vipulāṃ dorbhyāṃ svayaṃ māyāmayīmiva.
13. divyapāyasasampūrṇām pātrīm patnīm iva priyām
pragṛhya vipulām dorbhyām svayam māyāmayīm iva
13. svayam dorbhyām vipulām divyapāyasasampūrṇām

13. Having taken in his two arms a large vessel, filled with divine rice pudding (pāyasa), which was beloved to him like a wife, as if it were made of illusion (māyā) itself.
समवेक्ष्याब्रवीद्वाक्यमिदं दशरथं नृपम् ।
प्राजापत्यं नरं विद्धि मामिहाभ्यागतं नृप ॥१४॥
14. samavekṣyābravīdvākyamidaṃ daśarathaṃ nṛpam ,
prājāpatyaṃ naraṃ viddhi māmihābhyāgataṃ nṛpa.
14. samavekṣya abrāvīt vākyam idam daśaratham nṛpam
prājāpatyam naram viddhi mām iha abhyāgatam nṛpa
14. samavekṣya daśaratham nṛpam abrāvīt idam vākyam
nṛpa mām iha abhyāgatam prājāpatyam naram viddhi
14. Having observed King Daśaratha, he spoke these words: "O king, know me, who has arrived here, to be a man born of Prajāpati."
ततः परं तदा राजा प्रत्युवाच कृताञ्जलिः ।
भगवन् स्वागतं ते ऽस्तु किमहं करवाणि ते ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ paraṃ tadā rājā pratyuvāca kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
bhagavan svāgataṃ te'stu kimahaṃ karavāṇi te.
15. tataḥ param tadā rājā pratyuvāca kṛtāñjaliḥ
bhagavan svāgatam te astu kim aham karavāṇi te
15. rājā tataḥ param tadā kṛtāñjaliḥ pratyuvāca
bhagavan te svāgatam astu aham te kim karavāṇi
15. Then, with folded hands, the king replied, "O venerable one, welcome to you. What can I do for you?"
अथो पुनरिदं वाक्यं प्राजापत्यो नरो ऽब्रवीत् ।
राजन्नर्चयता देवानद्य प्राप्तमिदं त्वया ॥१६॥
16. atho punaridaṃ vākyaṃ prājāpatyo naro'bravīt ,
rājannarcayatā devānadya prāptamidaṃ tvayā.
16. atho punaḥ idam vākyam prājāpatyaḥ naraḥ abravīt
rājan arcayatā devān adya prāptam idam tvayā
16. atho punaḥ prājāpatyaḥ naraḥ idam vākyam abravīt

16. Then, the man, the son of Prajapati, spoke these words again: "O king, by worshipping the gods, you have obtained this today."
इदं तु नरशार्दूल पायसं देवनिर्मितम् ।
प्रजाकरं गृहाण त्वं धन्यमारोग्यवर्धनम् ॥१७॥
17. idaṃ tu naraśārdūla pāyasaṃ devanirmitam ,
prajākaraṃ gṛhāṇa tvaṃ dhanyamārogyavardhanam.
17. idam tu naraśārdūla pāyasam devanirmitam
prajākaram gṛhāṇa tvam dhanyam ārogyavardhanam
17. naraśārdūla,
tvam idam tu devanirmitam prajākaram dhanyam ārogyavardhanam pāyasam gṛhāṇa
17. "O tiger among men, accept this divine rice pudding (pāyasam), which is made by the gods, grants offspring, is auspicious, and increases health."
भार्याणामनुरूपाणामश्नीतेति प्रयच्छ वै ।
तासु त्वं लप्स्यसे पुत्रान्यदर्थं यजसे नृप ॥१८॥
18. bhāryāṇāmanurūpāṇāmaśnīteti prayaccha vai ,
tāsu tvaṃ lapsyase putrānyadarthaṃ yajase nṛpa.
18. bhāryāṇām anurūpāṇām aśnīta iti prayaccha vai
tāsu tvam lapsyase putrān yadartham yajase nṛpa
18. nṛpa vai anurūpāṇām bhāryāṇām prayaccha iti
aśnīta tāsu tvam putrān lapsyase yadartham yajase
18. Indeed, accept suitable wives and instruct them to partake [of the ritual offerings or blessings]. From them, O King, you will obtain sons, for which purpose you are performing the Vedic ritual (yajña).
तथेति नृपतिः प्रीतः शिरसा प्रतिगृह्य ताम् ।
पात्रीं देवान्नसंपूर्णां देवदत्तां हिरण्मयीम् ॥१९॥
19. tatheti nṛpatiḥ prītaḥ śirasā pratigṛhya tām ,
pātrīṃ devānnasaṃpūrṇāṃ devadattāṃ hiraṇmayīm.
19. tathā iti nṛpatiḥ prītaḥ śirasā pratigṛhya tām
pātrīm devānna-sampūrṇām devadattām hiraṇmayīm
19. nṛpatiḥ prītaḥ tām devānna-sampūrṇām devadattām
hiraṇmayīm pātrīm śirasā pratigṛhya tathā iti
19. The pleased king, receiving that golden bowl, which was full of divine food and given by the deity, with a gesture of reverence (by bowing his head), replied, "So be it."
अभिवाद्य च तद्भूतमद्भुतं प्रियदर्शनम् ।
मुदा परमया युक्तश्चकाराभिप्रदक्षिणम् ॥२०॥
20. abhivādya ca tadbhūtamadbhutaṃ priyadarśanam ,
mudā paramayā yuktaścakārābhipradakṣiṇam.
20. abhivādya ca tat bhūtam adbhutam priyadarśanam
mudā paramayā yuktaḥ cakāra abhipradakṣiṇam
20. ca adbhutam priyadarśanam tat bhūtam abhivādya
paramayā mudā yuktaḥ abhipradakṣiṇam cakāra
20. And having saluted that wondrous being, who was pleasing to behold, he, filled with supreme joy, performed a circumambulation.
ततो दशरथः प्राप्य पायसं देवनिर्मितम् ।
बभूव परमप्रीतः प्राप्य वित्तमिवाधनः ॥२१॥
21. tato daśarathaḥ prāpya pāyasaṃ devanirmitam ,
babhūva paramaprītaḥ prāpya vittamivādhanaḥ.

babhūva paramaprītaḥ prāpya vittam iva adhanaḥ
21. tataḥ daśarathaḥ devanirmitam pāyasam prāpya

21. Then Dasharatha, having received the divinely created rice pudding, became supremely pleased, just as a poor man would be upon gaining wealth.
ततस्तदद्भुतप्रख्यं भूतं परमभास्वरम् ।
संवर्तयित्वा तत् कर्म तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥२२॥
22. tatastadadbhutaprakhyaṃ bhūtaṃ paramabhāsvaram ,
saṃvartayitvā tat karma tatraivāntaradhīyata.
22. tataḥ tat adbhutaprakhyam bhūtam paramabhāsvaram
saṃvartayitva tat karma tatra eva antaradhīyata
22. tataḥ adbhutaprakhyam paramabhāsvaram tat bhūtam
tat karma saṃvartayitva tatra eva antaradhīyata
22. Then that supremely radiant and wondrous-looking being, having completed its task (karma), disappeared right there.
हर्षरश्मिभिरुद्योतं तस्यान्तःपुरमाबभौ ।
शारदस्याभिरामस्य चन्द्रस्येव नभोऽंशुभिः ॥२३॥
23. harṣaraśmibhirudyotaṃ tasyāntaḥpuramābabhau ,
śāradasyābhirāmasya candrasyeva nabho'ṃśubhiḥ.
23. harṣaraśmibhiḥ udyotam tasya antaḥpuram ābabhau
śāradasya abhirāmasya candrasya iva nabhaḥ aṃśubhiḥ
23. His inner apartment shone, radiant with rays of joy, just as the sky glows with the rays of the delightful autumnal moon.
सो ऽन्तःपुरं प्रविश्यैव कौसल्यामिदमब्रवीत् ।
पायसं प्रतिगृह्णीष्व पुत्रीयं त्विदमात्मनः ॥२४॥
24. so'ntaḥpuraṃ praviśyaiva kausalyāmidamabravīt ,
pāyasaṃ pratigṛhṇīṣva putrīyaṃ tvidamātmanaḥ.
24. saḥ antaḥpuram praviśya eva kausalyām idam abravīt
pāyasam pratigṛhṇīṣva putrīyam tu idam ātmanaḥ
24. Having just entered the inner apartment, he said this to Kauśalyā: "Accept this milk-rice pudding (pāyasa), which is for the sake of obtaining a son, for yourself."
कौसल्यायै नरपतिः पायसार्धं ददौ तदा ।
अर्धादर्धं ददौ चापि सुमित्रायै नराधिपः ।
कैकेय्यै चावशिष्टार्धं ददौ पुत्रार्थकारणात् ॥२५॥
25. kausalyāyai narapatiḥ pāyasārdhaṃ dadau tadā ,
ardhādardhaṃ dadau cāpi sumitrāyai narādhipaḥ ,
kaikeyyai cāvaśiṣṭārdhaṃ dadau putrārthakāraṇāt.
25. kausalyāyai narapatiḥ pāyasārdham
dadau tadā ardhāt ardham dadau ca api
sumitrāyai narādhipaḥ kaikeyyai ca
avaśiṣṭārdham dadau putrārthakāraṇāt
25. Then the king (narapati) gave half of the pudding to Kauśalyā. And the king (narādhipa) also gave half from a half (i.e., a quarter of the total) to Sumitrā. And for the sake of progeny, he gave the remaining half (i.e., the remaining quarter of the total) to Kaikeyī.
प्रददौ चावशिष्टार्धं पायसस्यामृतोपमम् ।
अनुचिन्त्य सुमित्रायै पुनरेव महीपतिः ॥२६॥
26. pradadau cāvaśiṣṭārdhaṃ pāyasasyāmṛtopamam ,
anucintya sumitrāyai punareva mahīpatiḥ.
26. pradadau ca avaśiṣṭārdham pāyasasya amṛtopamam
anucintya sumitrāyai punaḥ eva mahīpatiḥ
26. And having reconsidered, the king (mahīpati) indeed gave another portion, the nectar-like remaining half of the pudding, to Sumitrā again.
एवं तासां ददौ राजा
भार्याणां पायसं पृथक् ॥२७॥
27. evaṃ tāsāṃ dadau rājā
bhāryāṇāṃ pāyasaṃ pṛthak.

27. Thus, the king gave rice pudding (pāyasam) separately to those wives.
तास्त्वेतत् पायसं प्राप्य नरेन्द्रस्योत्तमाः स्त्रियः ।
संमानं मेनिरे सर्वाः प्रहर्षोदितचेतसः ॥२८॥
28. tāstvetat pāyasaṃ prāpya narendrasyottamāḥ striyaḥ ,
saṃmānaṃ menire sarvāḥ praharṣoditacetasaḥ.
28. tāḥ tu etat pāyasam prāpya narendrasya uttamāḥ striyaḥ
| sammānam menire sarvāḥ praharṣa-udita-cetasaḥ
28. tu etat pāyasam prāpya narendrasya uttamāḥ tāḥ
striyaḥ sarvāḥ praharṣa-udita-cetasaḥ sammānam menire
28. Having obtained that rice pudding (pāyasam), all those excellent wives of the king, whose minds were filled with great joy, considered it a great honor.
