1. When Rāma, the son of Daśaratha, had crossed the ocean with his army, the illustrious Rāvaṇa spoke to his two ministers, Śuka and Sāraṇa.
समग्रं सागरं तीर्णं दुस्तरं वानरं बलम् ।
अभूतपूर्वं रामेण सागरे सेतुबन्धनम् ॥२॥
2. samagraṃ sāgaraṃ tīrṇaṃ dustaraṃ vānaraṃ balam ,
abhūtapūrvaṃ rāmeṇa sāgare setubandhanam.

2. The entire monkey army has crossed the ocean, which is difficult to traverse. This building of a bridge across the ocean by Rāma is unprecedented.
सागरे सेतुबन्धं तु न श्रद्दध्यां कथं चन ।
अवश्यं चापि संख्येयं तन्मया वानरं बलम् ॥३॥
3. sāgare setubandhaṃ tu na śraddadhyāṃ kathaṃ cana ,
avaśyaṃ cāpi saṃkhyeyaṃ tanmayā vānaraṃ balam.
3. sāgare setubandham tu na śraddadhyām katham cana
avaśyam ca api saṃkhyeyam tat mayā vānaram balam
3. mayā sāgare setubandham katham cana na śraddadhyām
ca api tat vānaram balam avaśyam saṃkhyeyam
3. But I would never believe in such a bridge-building across the ocean. And that monkey army must certainly be enumerated by me.
भवन्तौ वानरं सैन्यं प्रविश्यानुपलक्षितौ ।
परिमाणं च वीर्यं च ये च मुख्याः प्लवंगमाः ॥४॥
4. bhavantau vānaraṃ sainyaṃ praviśyānupalakṣitau ,
parimāṇaṃ ca vīryaṃ ca ye ca mukhyāḥ plavaṃgamāḥ.

parimāṇam ca vīryam ca ye ca mukhyāḥ plavaṅgamāḥ

4. You two, having entered the monkey army unnoticed, should ascertain its size and strength, and who are the chief monkeys among them.
मन्त्रिणो ये च रामस्य सुग्रीवस्य च संमताः ।
ये पूर्वमभिवर्तन्ते ये च शूराः प्लवंगमाः ॥५॥
5. mantriṇo ye ca rāmasya sugrīvasya ca saṃmatāḥ ,
ye pūrvamabhivartante ye ca śūrāḥ plavaṃgamāḥ.
5. mantriṇaḥ ye ca rāmasya sugrīvasya ca saṃmatāḥ
ye pūrvam abhivartante ye ca śūrāḥ plavaṅgamāḥ
5. rāmasya ca sugrīvasya ca ye saṃmatāḥ mantriṇaḥ

5. And who are the trusted ministers of Rāma and (Sugrīva)? Also, who are the brave monkeys who are always at the forefront?
स च सेतुर्यथा बद्धः सागरे सलिलार्णवे ।
निवेशश्च यथा तेषां वानराणां महात्मनाम् ॥६॥
6. sa ca seturyathā baddhaḥ sāgare salilārṇave ,
niveśaśca yathā teṣāṃ vānarāṇāṃ mahātmanām.
6. saḥ ca setuḥ yathā baddhaḥ sāgare salilārṇave
niveśaḥ ca yathā teṣām vānarāṇām mahātmanām
6. saḥ ca setuḥ salilārṇave sāgare yathā baddhaḥ

6. Also, how that bridge was constructed in the watery ocean, and how the encampment of those great-souled monkeys was established.
रामस्य व्यवसायं च वीर्यं प्रहरणानि च ।
लक्ष्मणस्य च वीरस्य तत्त्वतो ज्ञातुमर्हथ ॥७॥
7. rāmasya vyavasāyaṃ ca vīryaṃ praharaṇāni ca ,
lakṣmaṇasya ca vīrasya tattvato jñātumarhatha.
7. rāmasya vyavasāyam ca vīryam praharaṇāni ca
lakṣmaṇasya ca vīrasya tattvataḥ jñātum arhatha
7. rāmasya ca vīrasya lakṣmaṇasya ca vyavasāyam
vīryam ca praharaṇāni tattvataḥ jñātum arhatha
7. You ought to truly understand the resolve and valor, as well as the weapons, of Rāma and of the heroic Lakṣmaṇa.
कश्च सेनापतिस्तेषां वानराणां महौजसाम् ।
एतज्ज्ञात्वा यथातत्त्वं शीघ्रमगन्तुमर्हथः ॥८॥
8. kaśca senāpatisteṣāṃ vānarāṇāṃ mahaujasām ,
etajjñātvā yathātattvaṃ śīghramagantumarhathaḥ.
8. kaḥ ca senāpatiḥ teṣām vānarāṇām mahaujasām etat
jñātvā yathātattvam śīghram agantum arhathaḥ
8. teṣām mahaujasām vānarāṇām kaḥ ca senāpatiḥ etat

8. And who is the commander of those mighty monkeys? Having truly understood this, you two should promptly go.
इति प्रतिसमादिष्टौ राक्षसौ शुकसारणौ ।
हरिरूपधरौ वीरौ प्रविष्टौ वानरं बलम् ॥९॥
9. iti pratisamādiṣṭau rākṣasau śukasāraṇau ,
harirūpadharau vīrau praviṣṭau vānaraṃ balam.

9. Thus, the two valiant demons, Shuka and Saraṇa, having been instructed, assumed the forms of monkeys and entered the monkey army.
ततस्तद्वानरं सैन्यमचिन्त्यं लोमहर्षणम् ।
संख्यातुं नाध्यगच्छेतां तदा तौ शुकसारणौ ॥१०॥
10. tatastadvānaraṃ sainyamacintyaṃ lomaharṣaṇam ,
saṃkhyātuṃ nādhyagacchetāṃ tadā tau śukasāraṇau.
10. tataḥ tat vānaraṃ sainyam acintyam lomaharṣaṇam
saṃkhyātuṃ na adhyagacchetām tadā tau śukasāraṇau
10. tataḥ tadā tau śukasāraṇau tat vānaraṃ sainyam
acintyam lomaharṣaṇam saṃkhyātuṃ na adhyagacchetām
10. Then, at that time, those two, Shuka and Saraṇa, were unable to count that monkey army, which was inconceivable and hair-raising.
तत् स्थितं पर्वताग्रेषु निर्दरेषु गुहासु च ।
समुद्रस्य च तीरेषु वनेषूपवनेषु च ॥११॥
11. tat sthitaṃ parvatāgreṣu nirdareṣu guhāsu ca ,
samudrasya ca tīreṣu vaneṣūpavaneṣu ca.
11. tat sthitam parvatāgreṣu nirdareṣu guhāsu
ca samudrasya ca tīreṣu vaneṣu upavaneṣu ca
11. tat sthitam parvatāgreṣu nirdareṣu guhāsu
ca samudrasya ca tīreṣu vaneṣu upavaneṣu ca
11. That army was stationed on mountain peaks, in valleys, and in caves, as well as on the seashores, in forests, and in groves.
तरमाणं च तीर्णं च तर्तुकामं च सर्वशः ।
निविष्टं निविशच्चैव भीमनादं महाबलम् ॥१२॥
12. taramāṇaṃ ca tīrṇaṃ ca tartukāmaṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ,
niviṣṭaṃ niviśaccaiva bhīmanādaṃ mahābalam.
12. taramāṇaṃ ca tīrṇaṃ ca tartukāmaṃ ca sarvaśaḥ
niviṣṭaṃ niviśat ca eva bhīmanādaṃ mahābalam
12. bhīmanādaṃ mahābalam sarvaśaḥ taramāṇaṃ ca
tīrṇaṃ ca tartukāmaṃ ca niviṣṭaṃ niviśat ca eva
12. That mighty and terrible-roaring army was everywhere: some units were crossing, some had already crossed, and some were about to cross; some were encamped, and others were still settling down.
तौ ददर्श महातेजाः प्रच्छन्नौ च विभीषणः ।
आचचक्षे ऽथ रामाय गृहीत्वा शुकसारणौ ।
लङ्कायाः समनुप्राप्तौ चारौ परपुरंजयौ ॥१३॥
13. tau dadarśa mahātejāḥ pracchannau ca vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
ācacakṣe'tha rāmāya gṛhītvā śukasāraṇau ,
laṅkāyāḥ samanuprāptau cārau parapuraṃjayau.
13. tau dadarśa mahātejāḥ pracchannau
ca vibhīṣaṇaḥ | ācacakshe atha rāmāya
gṛhītvā śukasāraṇau | laṅkāyāḥ

13. mahātejāḥ vibhīṣaṇaḥ tau pracchannau

śukasāraṇau gṛhītvā rāmāya ācacakshe
13. The greatly effulgent Vibhīṣaṇa saw those two hidden individuals. Then, having captured Śuka and Sāraṇa, who had arrived from Laṅkā as spies capable of penetrating enemy fortresses, he reported this to Rāma.
तौ दृष्ट्वा व्यथितौ रामं निराशौ जीविते तदा ।
कृताञ्जलिपुटौ भीतौ वचनं चेदमूचतुः ॥१४॥
14. tau dṛṣṭvā vyathitau rāmaṃ nirāśau jīvite tadā ,
kṛtāñjalipuṭau bhītau vacanaṃ cedamūcatuḥ.
14. tau dṛṣṭvā vyathitau rāmam nirāśau jīvite tadā
| kṛtāñjalipuṭau bhītau vacanam ca idam ūcatuḥ
14. tadā tau rāmam dṛṣṭvā vyathitau jīvite nirāśau

14. Having seen Rāma, those two (spies), distressed and despairing of their lives, then, frightened and with hands folded in supplication, spoke these words.
आवामिहागतौ सौम्य रावणप्रहिताव् उभौ ।
परिज्ञातुं बलं कृत्स्नं तवेदं रघुनन्दन ॥१५॥
15. āvāmihāgatau saumya rāvaṇaprahitāv ubhau ,
parijñātuṃ balaṃ kṛtsnaṃ tavedaṃ raghunandana.
15. āvām iha āgatau saumya rāvaṇaprahitau ubhau |
parijñātum balam kṛtsnam tava idam raghunandana
15. saumya raghunandana ! rāvaṇaprahitau ubhau āvām
iha āgatau tava idam kṛtsnam balam parijñātum
15. "O gentle one, O delight of the Raghu dynasty, we both have come here, sent by Rāvaṇa, to ascertain this entire army of yours."
तयोस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा रामो दशरथात्मजः ।
अब्रवीत् प्रहसन् वाक्यं सर्वभूतहिते रतः ॥१६॥
16. tayostadvacanaṃ śrutvā rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ ,
abravīt prahasan vākyaṃ sarvabhūtahite rataḥ.
16. tayoḥ tat vacanam śrutvā rāmaḥ daśarathātmajaḥ
| abravīt prahasan vākyam sarvabhūtahite rataḥ
16. daśarathātmajaḥ rāmaḥ tayoḥ tat vacanam śrutvā
sarvabhūtahite rataḥ prahasan vākyam abravīt
16. Having heard their words, Rāma, the son of Daśaratha, who was intent on the welfare of all creatures, spoke (to them) with a smile.
यदि दृष्टं बलं कृत्स्नं वयं वा सुसमीक्षिताः ।
यथोक्तं वा कृतं कार्यं छन्दतः प्रतिगम्यताम् ॥१७॥
17. yadi dṛṣṭaṃ balaṃ kṛtsnaṃ vayaṃ vā susamīkṣitāḥ ,
yathoktaṃ vā kṛtaṃ kāryaṃ chandataḥ pratigamyatām.
17. yadi dṛṣṭam balam kṛtsnam vayam vā susamīkṣitāḥ
yathoktam vā kṛtam kāryam chandataḥ pratigamyatām
17. If the entire strength has been seen, or if we have been thoroughly observed, or if the task has been completed as instructed, then you may return at will.
प्रविश्य नगरीं लङ्कां भवद्भ्यां धनदानुजः ।
वक्तव्यो रक्षसां राजा यथोक्तं वचनं मम ॥१८॥
18. praviśya nagarīṃ laṅkāṃ bhavadbhyāṃ dhanadānujaḥ ,
vaktavyo rakṣasāṃ rājā yathoktaṃ vacanaṃ mama.
18. praviśya nagarīm laṅkām bhavadbhyām dhanadānujaḥ
vaktavyaḥ rakṣasām rājā yathoktam vacanam mama
18. Having entered the city of Laṅkā, you two should deliver my message, exactly as instructed, to the king of the Rākṣasas, Rāvaṇa, the younger brother of Kubera (Dhanada).
यद्बलं च समाश्रित्य सीतां मे हृतवानसि ।
तद्दर्शय यथाकामं ससैन्यः सहबान्धवः ॥१९॥
19. yadbalaṃ ca samāśritya sītāṃ me hṛtavānasi ,
taddarśaya yathākāmaṃ sasainyaḥ sahabāndhavaḥ.
19. yat balam ca samāśritya sītam me hṛtavān asi
tat darśaya yathākāmam sasainyaḥ sahabāndhavaḥ
19. Show me that strength, accompanied by your army and kinsmen, upon which you relied when you abducted my Sītā, as you please.
श्वःकाले नगरीं लङ्कां सप्राकारां सतोरणाम् ।
राक्षसं च बलं पश्य शरैर्विध्वंसितं मया ॥२०॥
20. śvaḥkāle nagarīṃ laṅkāṃ saprākārāṃ satoraṇām ,
rākṣasaṃ ca balaṃ paśya śarairvidhvaṃsitaṃ mayā.
20. śvaḥkāle nagarīm laṅkām saprākārām satoraṇām
rākṣasam ca balam paśya śaraiḥ vidhvamsitam mayā
20. Tomorrow, behold the city of Laṅkā, complete with its ramparts and gateways, and the rākṣasa army utterly destroyed by my arrows.
घोरं रोषमहं मोक्ष्ये बलं धारय रावण ।
श्वःकाले वज्रवान् वज्रं दानवेष्विव वासवः ॥२१॥
21. ghoraṃ roṣamahaṃ mokṣye balaṃ dhāraya rāvaṇa ,
śvaḥkāle vajravān vajraṃ dānaveṣviva vāsavaḥ.
21. ghoram roṣam aham mokṣye balam dhāraya rāvaṇa
śvaḥkāle vajravān vajram dānaveṣu iva vāsavaḥ
21. I shall unleash a terrible wrath; gather your strength, Ravana. Tomorrow, I will be like Vasava (Indra), who, as the wielder of the thunderbolt, casts it among the Danavas.
इति प्रतिसमादिष्टौ राक्षसौ शुकसारणौ ।
आगम्य नगरीं लङ्कामब्रूतां राक्षसाधिपम् ॥२२॥
22. iti pratisamādiṣṭau rākṣasau śukasāraṇau ,
āgamya nagarīṃ laṅkāmabrūtāṃ rākṣasādhipam.
22. iti pratisamādiṣṭau rākṣasau śukasāraṇau
āgamya nagarīm laṅkām abrūtām rākṣasādhipam
22. Thus, the two demons, Shuka and Sarana, having been fully instructed, returned to the city of Lanka and spoke to the lord of the demons.
विभीषणगृहीतौ तु वधार्हौ राक्षसेश्वर ।
दृष्ट्वा धर्मात्मना मुक्तौ रामेणामिततेजसा ॥२३॥
23. vibhīṣaṇagṛhītau tu vadhārhau rākṣaseśvara ,
dṛṣṭvā dharmātmanā muktau rāmeṇāmitatejasā.
23. vibhīṣaṇagṛhītau tu vadhārhau rākṣaseśvara
dṛṣṭvā dharmātmanā muktau rāmeṇa amitatejasā
23. But O lord of demons, though the two (spies) were seized by Vibhishana and deserved death, they were released by Rama, the righteous one (dharmātmanā) of immeasurable prowess, after he saw them.
एकस्थानगता यत्र चत्वारः पुरुषर्षभाः ।
लोकपालोपमाः शूराः कृतास्त्रा दृढविक्रमाः ॥२४॥
24. ekasthānagatā yatra catvāraḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ ,
lokapālopamāḥ śūrāḥ kṛtāstrā dṛḍhavikramāḥ.
24. ekasthānagatāḥ yatra catvāraḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ
lokapālopamāḥ śūrāḥ kṛtāstrāḥ dṛḍhavikramāḥ
24. Where four foremost among men, who are like the guardians of the world, brave, skilled in weapons, and of firm valor, are assembled in one place.
रामो दाशरथिः श्रीमांल् लक्ष्मणश्च विभीषणः ।
सुग्रीवश्च महातेजा महेन्द्रसमविक्रमः ॥२५॥
25. rāmo dāśarathiḥ śrīmāṃl lakṣmaṇaśca vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
sugrīvaśca mahātejā mahendrasamavikramaḥ.
25. rāmaḥ dāśarathiḥ śrīmān lakṣmaṇaḥ ca vibhīṣaṇaḥ
sugrīvaḥ ca mahātejāḥ mahendrasamavikramaḥ
25. Rāma, the glorious son of Daśaratha, along with Lakṣmaṇa, Vibhīṣaṇa, and Sugrīva, who is exceedingly mighty and possesses valor equal to the great Indra.
एते शक्ताः पुरीं लङ्कां सप्राकारां सतोरणाम् ।
उत्पाट्य संक्रामयितुं सर्वे तिष्ठन्तु वानराः ॥२६॥
26. ete śaktāḥ purīṃ laṅkāṃ saprākārāṃ satoraṇām ,
utpāṭya saṃkrāmayituṃ sarve tiṣṭhantu vānarāḥ.
26. ete śaktāḥ purīm laṅkām saprākārām satoraṇām
utpāṭya saṁkrāmayitum sarve tiṣṭhantu vānarāḥ
26. These (Rāma and his companions) are capable of uprooting and moving the city of Laṅkā, along with its walls and archways. Let all the Vānaras (monkeys) stay back.
यादृशं तस्य रामस्य रूपं प्रहरणानि च ।
वधिष्यति पुरीं लङ्कामेकस्तिष्ठन्तु ते त्रयः ॥२७॥
27. yādṛśaṃ tasya rāmasya rūpaṃ praharaṇāni ca ,
vadhiṣyati purīṃ laṅkāmekastiṣṭhantu te trayaḥ.
27. yādṛśam tasya rāmasya rūpam praharaṇāni ca
vadhiṣyati purīm laṅkām ekaḥ tiṣṭhantu te trayaḥ
27. Considering the nature of Rāma's form and his weapons, he alone will destroy the city of Laṅkā. Let those three (Lakṣmaṇa, Vibhīṣaṇa, and Sugrīva) remain behind.
रामलक्ष्मणगुप्ता सा सुग्रीवेण च वाहिनी ।
बभूव दुर्धर्षतरा सर्वैरपि सुरासुरैः ॥२८॥
28. rāmalakṣmaṇaguptā sā sugrīveṇa ca vāhinī ,
babhūva durdharṣatarā sarvairapi surāsuraiḥ.
28. rāmalakṣmaṇaguptā sā sugrīveṇa ca vāhinī
babhūva durdharṣatarā sarvaiḥ api surāsuraiḥ
28. That army, protected by Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, and Sugrīva, became even more formidable and unconquerable by all the gods and asuras alike.
प्रहृष्टरूपा ध्वजिनी वनौकसां महात्मनां संप्रति योद्धुमिच्छताम् ।
अलं विरोधेन शमो विधीयतां प्रदीयतां दाशरथाय मैथिली ॥२९॥
29. prahṛṣṭarūpā dhvajinī vanaukasāṃ mahātmanāṃ saṃprati yoddhumicchatām ,
alaṃ virodhena śamo vidhīyatāṃ pradīyatāṃ dāśarathāya maithilī.
29. prahr̥ṣṭarūpā dhvajinī vanaukasām
mahātmanām samprati yoddhum
icchhatām alam virodhena śamaḥ vidhīyatām
pradīyatām dāśarathāya maithilī

29. The army of forest-dwellers, those great-souled ones, now eager to fight, shows joyful faces. Enough with this conflict; let peace be established. Let Sītā, the princess of Mithilā, be returned to Rāma, the son of Daśaratha.
