ततः प्रागुत्तरां गत्वा रामः सौमित्रिणा सह ।
विश्वामित्रं पुरस्कृत्य यज्ञवाटमुपागमत् ॥१॥

1. Then, having proceeded northeast, Rama, along with Lakshmana, and with Vishvamitra leading the way, approached the sacrificial enclosure.
रामस्तु मुनिशार्दूलमुवाच सहलक्ष्मणः ।
साध्वी यज्ञसमृद्धिर्हि जनकस्य महात्मनः ॥२॥
2. rāmastu muniśārdūlamuvāca sahalakṣmaṇaḥ ,
sādhvī yajñasamṛddhirhi janakasya mahātmanaḥ.

2. Rama, accompanied by Lakshmana, then said to the foremost of sages: "Indeed, the successful completion of the great-souled Janaka's ritual (yajña) is excellent."
बहूनीह सहस्राणि नानादेशनिवासिनाम् ।
ब्राह्मणानां महाभाग वेदाध्ययनशालिनाम् ॥३॥
3. bahūnīha sahasrāṇi nānādeśanivāsinām ,
brāhmaṇānāṃ mahābhāga vedādhyayanaśālinām.

3. O venerable one, here are many thousands of Brahmins who dwell in various lands and are distinguished by their study of the Vedas.
ऋषिवाटाश्च दृश्यन्ते शकटीशतसंकुलाः ।
देशो विधीयतां ब्रह्मन्यत्र वत्स्यामहे वयम् ॥४॥
4. ṛṣivāṭāśca dṛśyante śakaṭīśatasaṃkulāḥ ,
deśo vidhīyatāṃ brahmanyatra vatsyāmahe vayam.
4. ṛṣivāṭāḥ ca dṛśyante śakaṭīśatasaṃkulāḥ deśaḥ
vidhīyatām brahman yatra vatsyāmahe vayam

4. And here are seen hermitages (ṛṣivāṭa) crowded with hundreds of carts. O revered one (brahman), let a place be designated where we may reside.
रामस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
निवेशमकरोद्देशे विविक्ते सलिलायुते ॥५॥
5. rāmasya vacanaṃ śrutvā viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ ,
niveśamakaroddeśe vivikte salilāyute.

5. Having heard the words of Rama, the great sage Viśvāmitra established a settlement in a secluded place (deśa) endowed with water.
विश्वामित्रं मुनिश्रेष्ठं श्रुत्वा स नृपतिस्तदा ।
शतानन्दं पुरस्कृत्य पुरोहितमनिन्दितम् ॥६॥
6. viśvāmitraṃ muniśreṣṭhaṃ śrutvā sa nṛpatistadā ,
śatānandaṃ puraskṛtya purohitamaninditam.

6. Having heard about Viśvāmitra, the best of sages, that king then, placing Śatānanda, his blameless family priest, at the forefront...
ऋत्विजो ऽपि महात्मानस्त्वर्घ्यमादाय सत्वरम् ।
विश्वामित्राय धर्मेण ददुर्मन्त्रपुरस्कृतम् ॥७॥
7. ṛtvijo'pi mahātmānastvarghyamādāya satvaram ,
viśvāmitrāya dharmeṇa dadurmantrapuraskṛtam.
7. ṛtvijaḥ api mahātmānaḥ tu arghyam ādāya satvaram
viśvāmitrāya dharmeṇa daduḥ mantra-puraskṛtam
7. mahātmānaḥ ṛtvijaḥ api tu satvaram arghyam ādāya
viśvāmitrāya dharmeṇa mantra-puraskṛtam daduḥ
7. The highly revered priests, quickly taking the respectful offering (arghya), gave it to Viśvāmitra in accordance with proper conduct (dharma) and consecrated by sacred formulas (mantra).
प्रतिगृह्य तु तां पूजां जनकस्य महात्मनः ।
पप्रच्छ कुशलं राज्ञो यज्ञस्य च निरामयम् ॥८॥
8. pratigṛhya tu tāṃ pūjāṃ janakasya mahātmanaḥ ,
papraccha kuśalaṃ rājño yajñasya ca nirāmayam.
8. pratigṛhya tu tām pūjām janakasya mahātmanaḥ
papraccha kuśalam rājñaḥ yajñasya ca nirāmayam
8. tu tām mahātmanaḥ janakasya pūjām pratigṛhya

8. Indeed, having accepted that veneration (pūjā) from the great King Janaka, he inquired about the well-being of the king and the faultless state of the sacrificial ritual (yajña).
स तांश्चापि मुनीन्पृष्ट्वा सोपाध्याय पुरोधसः ।
यथान्यायं ततः सर्वैः समागच्छत् प्रहृष्टवान् ॥९॥
9. sa tāṃścāpi munīnpṛṣṭvā sopādhyāya purodhasaḥ ,
yathānyāyaṃ tataḥ sarvaiḥ samāgacchat prahṛṣṭavān.
9. saḥ tān ca api munīn pṛṣṭvā sa-upādhyāya purodhasaḥ
yathā-nyāyam tataḥ sarvaiḥ samāgacchat prahṛṣṭavān
9. saḥ tu api upādhyāya purodhasaḥ tān munīn pṛṣṭvā
tataḥ yathā-nyāyam sarvaiḥ samāgacchat prahṛṣṭavān
9. Having also questioned those sages (muni), along with their teachers and family priests, then, in accordance with what is proper, he (Viśvāmitra) met with all of them, having become greatly delighted.
अथ राजा मुनिश्रेष्ठं कृताञ्जलिरभाषत ।
आसने भगवानास्तां सहैभिर्मुनिसत्तमैः ॥१०॥
10. atha rājā muniśreṣṭhaṃ kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata ,
āsane bhagavānāstāṃ sahaibhirmunisattamaiḥ.
10. atha rājā muni-śreṣṭham kṛta-añjaliḥ abhāṣata
āsane bhagavān āstām saha ebhiḥ muni-sattamaiḥ
10. atha kṛta-añjaliḥ rājā muni-śreṣṭham abhāṣata
"bhagavān ebhiḥ muni-sattamaiḥ saha āsane āstām"
10. Then the king, with folded hands (kṛtāñjali), addressed the foremost of sages. (He said:) "May your worship (bhagavat) be seated on a seat along with these excellent sages."
जनकस्य वचः श्रुत्वा निषसाद महामुनिः ।
पुरोधा ऋत्विजश्चैव राजा च सह मन्त्रिभिः ॥११॥
11. janakasya vacaḥ śrutvā niṣasāda mahāmuniḥ ,
purodhā ṛtvijaścaiva rājā ca saha mantribhiḥ.

purodhā ṛtvijaḥ ca eva rājā ca saha mantribhiḥ

11. After hearing Janaka's words, the great sage (mahāmuni) sat down. The chief priest, the other officiating priests, and the king along with his ministers also took their seats.
आसनेषु यथान्यायमुपविष्टान् समन्ततः ।
दृष्ट्वा स नृपतिस्तत्र विश्वामित्रमथाब्रवीत् ॥१२॥
12. āsaneṣu yathānyāyamupaviṣṭān samantataḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā sa nṛpatistatra viśvāmitramathābravīt.
12. āsaneṣu yathānyāyam upaviṣṭān samantataḥ dṛṣṭvā
saḥ nṛpatiḥ tatra viśvāmitram atha abravīt
12. saḥ nṛpatiḥ āsaneṣu yathānyāyam samantataḥ

12. Having seen everyone seated appropriately on their seats all around, that king (Janaka) then spoke to Viśvāmitra there.
अद्य यज्ञसमृद्धिर्मे सफला दैवतैः कृता ।
अद्य यज्ञफलं प्राप्तं भगवद्दर्शनान्मया ॥१३॥
13. adya yajñasamṛddhirme saphalā daivataiḥ kṛtā ,
adya yajñaphalaṃ prāptaṃ bhagavaddarśanānmayā.
13. adya yajñasamṛddhiḥ me saphalā daivataiḥ kṛtā
adya yajñaphalam prāptam bhagavaddarśanāt mayā
13. adya me yajñasamṛddhiḥ daivataiḥ saphalā kṛtā
adya mayā bhagavaddarśanāt yajñaphalam prāptam
13. Today, the success of my Vedic ritual (yajña) has been made fruitful by the deities. Today, the result of the Vedic ritual (yajña) has been obtained by me through the sight of the revered one (Bhagavan).
धन्यो ऽस्म्यनुगृहीतो ऽस्मि यस्य मे मुनिपुंगव ।
यज्ञोपसदनं ब्रह्मन्प्राप्तो ऽसि मुनिभिः सह ॥१४॥
14. dhanyo'smyanugṛhīto'smi yasya me munipuṃgava ,
yajñopasadanaṃ brahmanprāpto'si munibhiḥ saha.
14. dhanyaḥ asmi anugṛhītaḥ asmi yasya me munipuṅgava
yajñopasadanam brahman prāptaḥ asi munibhiḥ saha
14. munipuṅgava brahman yasya me yajñopasadanam munibhiḥ
saha prāptaḥ asi asmi dhanyaḥ asmi anugṛhītaḥ
14. O best among sages (munipuṅgava), O Brahmin (brahman), I am truly blessed and highly favored, for you have graced my Vedic ritual (yajña) by your arrival along with other sages.
द्वादशाहं तु ब्रह्मर्षे शेषमाहुर्मनीषिणः ।
ततो भागार्थिनो देवान्द्रष्टुमर्हसि कौशिक ॥१५॥
15. dvādaśāhaṃ tu brahmarṣe śeṣamāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ ,
tato bhāgārthino devāndraṣṭumarhasi kauśika.
15. dvādaśāham tu brahmarṣe śeṣam āhuḥ manīṣiṇaḥ
tataḥ bhāgārthinaḥ devān draṣṭum arhasi kauśika
15. brahmarṣe manīṣiṇaḥ dvādaśāham tu śeṣam āhuḥ
tataḥ kauśika bhāgārthinaḥ devān draṣṭum arhasi
15. O Brahmarishi, the wise ones declare that the remaining period is twelve days. Thereafter, O Kaushika, you should behold the gods who are desirous of their share [of the offerings].
इत्युक्त्वा मुनिशार्दूलं प्रहृष्टवदनस्तदा ।
पुनस्तं परिपप्रच्छ प्राञ्जलिः प्रयतो नृपः ॥१६॥
16. ityuktvā muniśārdūlaṃ prahṛṣṭavadanastadā ,
punastaṃ paripapraccha prāñjaliḥ prayato nṛpaḥ.
16. iti uktvā muniśārdūlam prahṛṣṭavadanaḥ tadā
punaḥ tam paripapraccha prāñjaliḥ prayataḥ nṛpaḥ
16. iti uktvā muniśārdūlam tadā nṛpaḥ prahṛṣṭavadanaḥ

16. Having thus spoken to the foremost of sages, the king, with a joyful countenance, then, respectful and with folded hands (prāñjaliḥ), questioned him again.
इमौ कुमारौ भद्रं ते देवतुल्यपराक्रमौ ।
गजसिंहगती वीरौ शार्दूलवृषभोपमौ ॥१७॥
17. imau kumārau bhadraṃ te devatulyaparākramau ,
gajasiṃhagatī vīrau śārdūlavṛṣabhopamau.

17. May good fortune be upon you! These two youths possess valor equal to that of the gods. They move with the majestic gait of elephants and lions, are heroic, and resemble mighty tigers and bulls.
पद्मपत्रविशालाक्षौ खड्गतूणीधनुर्धरौ ।
अश्विनाविव रूपेण समुपस्थितयौवनौ ॥१८॥
18. padmapatraviśālākṣau khaḍgatūṇīdhanurdharau ,
aśvināviva rūpeṇa samupasthitayauvanau.

18. They possess broad eyes like lotus petals, carry swords, quivers, and bows, and in their beauty, they resemble the Ashvin (Aśvin) twins, having just entered the prime of their youth.
यदृच्छयैव गां प्राप्तौ देवलोकादिवामरौ ।
कथं पद्भ्यामिह प्राप्तौ किमर्थं कस्य वा मुने ॥१९॥
19. yadṛcchayaiva gāṃ prāptau devalokādivāmarau ,
kathaṃ padbhyāmiha prāptau kimarthaṃ kasya vā mune.
19. yādṛcchayā eva gām prāptau devalokāt iva amarau
katham padbhyām iha prāptau kimartham kasya vā mune
19. mune yādṛcchayā eva devalokāt iva amarau gām prāptau,
iha padbhyām katham prāptau,
kimartham vā kasya (putrau)
19. O sage, these two, who have arrived on earth by chance as if they were immortals from the divine realm - how did they come here on foot? And for what purpose, or whose (sons) are they?
वरायुधधरौ वीरौ कस्य पुत्रौ महामुने ।
भूषयन्ताविमं देशं चन्द्रसूर्याविवाम्बरम् ॥२०॥
20. varāyudhadharau vīrau kasya putrau mahāmune ,
bhūṣayantāvimaṃ deśaṃ candrasūryāvivāmbaram.
20. varāyudhadharau vīrau kasya putrau mahāmune
bhūṣayantau imam deśam candrasūryau iva ambaram
20. mahāmune,
varāyudhadharau vīrau,
kasya putrau (etau)? (etau) imam deśam bhūṣayantau (sthaḥ) candrasūryau ambaram iva
20. O great sage, whose sons are these two heroes bearing excellent weapons, who are adorning this region as the moon and sun adorn the sky?
परस्परस्य सदृशौ प्रमाणेङ्गितचेष्टितैः ।
काकपक्षधरौ वीरौ श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः ॥२१॥
21. parasparasya sadṛśau pramāṇeṅgitaceṣṭitaiḥ ,
kākapakṣadharau vīrau śrotumicchāmi tattvataḥ.

kākapakṣadharau vīrau śrotum icchāmi tattvataḥ
21. (ahaṃ) tattvataḥ śrotum icchāmi (etau) parasparasya pramāṇeṅgitaceṣṭitaiḥ sadṛśau,
kākapakṣadharau vīrau (ca)
21. I wish to hear truly (or, in detail) about these two heroes, who are similar to each other in their stature, gestures, and actions, and who still wear their hair in a crow's-wing style.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा जनकस्य महात्मनः ।
न्यवेदयन्महात्मानौ पुत्रौ दशरथस्य तौ ॥२२॥
22. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā janakasya mahātmanaḥ ,
nyavedayanmahātmānau putrau daśarathasya tau.
22. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā janakasya mahātmanaḥ
nyavedayan mahātmānau putrau daśarathasya tau
22. mahātmanaḥ janakasya tasya tat vacanam śrutvā,
(te) tau mahātmānau daśarathasya putrau nyavedayan
22. After hearing those words of the great-souled Janaka, (they, i.e., Viśvāmitra's party) introduced those two, the great-souled sons of Dasaratha.
सिद्धाश्रमनिवासं च राक्षसानां वधं तथा ।
तच्चागमनमव्यग्रं विशालायाश्च दर्शनम् ॥२३॥
23. siddhāśramanivāsaṃ ca rākṣasānāṃ vadhaṃ tathā ,
taccāgamanamavyagraṃ viśālāyāśca darśanam.
23. siddhāśramanivāsam ca rākṣasānām vadham tathā
tat ca āgamanam avyagram viśālāyāḥ ca darśanam
23. siddhāśramanivāsam ca rākṣasānām vadham tathā
avyagram tat āgamanam ca viśālāyāḥ darśanam
23. He recounted their stay in Siddhashrama, the killing of the demons (rākṣasāḥ), their unhindered arrival, and the sight of the city Viśālā.
अहल्यादर्शनं चैव गौतमेन समागमम् ।
महाधनुषि जिज्ञासां कर्तुमागमनं तथा ॥२४॥
24. ahalyādarśanaṃ caiva gautamena samāgamam ,
mahādhanuṣi jijñāsāṃ kartumāgamanaṃ tathā.
24. ahalyādarśanam ca eva gautamena samāgamam
mahādhanuṣi jijñāsām kartum āgamanam tathā
24. ahalyādarśanam ca eva gautamena samāgamam

24. He recounted the sight of Ahalya, the reunion with Gautama, and their arrival to inquire about the great bow.
एतत् सर्वं महातेजा जनकाय महात्मने ।
निवेद्य विररामाथ विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ॥२५॥
25. etat sarvaṃ mahātejā janakāya mahātmane ,
nivedya virarāmātha viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ.

nivedya virarāma atha viśvāmitraḥ mahāmuniḥ
25. atha mahātejāḥ mahāmuniḥ viśvāmitraḥ etat

25. Then, the greatly effulgent (mahātejāḥ) great sage (mahāmuni) Viśvāmitra, having reported all this to the noble (mahātman) Janaka, ceased speaking.
