तां तथा गर्हयित्वा तु मातरं भरतस्तदा ।
रोषेण महताविष्टः पुनरेवाब्रवीद्वचः ॥१॥
1. tāṃ tathā garhayitvā tu mātaraṃ bharatastadā ,
roṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭaḥ punarevābravīdvacaḥ.

1. Having thus rebuked his mother, Bharata, overwhelmed by great wrath, then spoke words again.
राज्याद्भ्रंशस्व कैकेयि नृशंसे दुष्टचारिणि ।
परित्यक्ता च धर्मेण मा मृतं रुदती भव ॥२॥
2. rājyādbhraṃśasva kaikeyi nṛśaṃse duṣṭacāriṇi ,
parityaktā ca dharmeṇa mā mṛtaṃ rudatī bhava.
2. rājyāt bhraṃśasva kaikeyi nṛśaṃse duṣṭacāriṇi
parityaktā ca dharmeṇa mā mṛtam rudatī bhava
2. nṛśaṃse duṣṭacāriṇi kaikeyi,
rājyāt bhraṃśasva! dharmeṇa ca parityaktā (asi).
mṛtam rudatī mā bhava!
2. Fall from the kingdom, Kaikeyī, you cruel one, whose conduct is evil! You are abandoned by natural law (dharma)! Do not be one who weeps for the dead!
किं नु ते ऽदूषयद् राजा रामो वा भृशधार्मिकः ।
ययोर्मृत्युर्विवासश्च त्वत्कृते तुल्यमागतौ ॥३॥
3. kiṃ nu te'dūṣayad rājā rāmo vā bhṛśadhārmikaḥ ,
yayormṛtyurvivāsaśca tvatkṛte tulyamāgatau.
3. kiṃ nu te adūṣayat rājā rāmaḥ vā bhṛśadhārmikaḥ
yayoḥ mṛtyuḥ vivāsaḥ ca tvatkṛte tulyam āgatau
3. bhṛśadhārmikaḥ rāmaḥ rājā te kiṃ nu adūṣayat

3. What wrong did King Rama, who is exceedingly righteous (dharma), do to you? Because of you, both death and exile have equally come upon them.
भ्रूणहत्यामसि प्राप्ता कुलस्यास्य विनाशनात् ।
कैकेयि नरकं गच्छ मा च भर्तुः सलोकताम् ॥४॥
4. bhrūṇahatyāmasi prāptā kulasyāsya vināśanāt ,
kaikeyi narakaṃ gaccha mā ca bhartuḥ salokatām.
4. bhūṇahatyām asi prāptā kulasya asya vināśanāt
kaikeyi narakam gaccha mā ca bhartuḥ salokatām
4. he kaikeyi,
asya kulasya vināśanāt [tvaṃ] bhūṇahatyām prāptā asi narakam gaccha ca bhartuḥ salokatām mā [gaccha]
4. You have incurred the sin of killing an embryo (bhūṇahatya) by causing the destruction of this family. O Kaikeyi, go to hell, and do not attain the same world as your husband.
यत्त्वया हीदृशं पापं कृतं घोरेण कर्मणा ।
सर्वलोकप्रियं हित्वा ममाप्यापादितं भयम् ॥५॥
5. yattvayā hīdṛśaṃ pāpaṃ kṛtaṃ ghoreṇa karmaṇā ,
sarvalokapriyaṃ hitvā mamāpyāpāditaṃ bhayam.
5. yat tvayā hi īdṛśam pāpam kṛtam ghoreṇa karmaṇā
sarvalokapriyam hitvā mama api āpāditam bhayam
5. yat hi īdṛśam pāpam tvayā ghoreṇa karmaṇā kṛtam,
[tena] sarvalokapriyam hitvā mama api bhayam āpāditam
5. Indeed, such a dreadful sin has been committed by you through a terrible action (karma). By abandoning him who is dear to all people, you have also caused me fear.
त्वत्कृते मे पिता वृत्तो रामश्चारण्यमाश्रितः ।
अयशो जीवलोके च त्वयाहं प्रतिपादितः ॥६॥
6. tvatkṛte me pitā vṛtto rāmaścāraṇyamāśritaḥ ,
ayaśo jīvaloke ca tvayāhaṃ pratipāditaḥ.
6. tvatkṛte me pitā vṛttaḥ rāmaḥ ca āraṇyam āśritaḥ
ayaśaḥ jīvaloke ca tvayā aham pratipāditaḥ
6. tvatkṛte me pitā vṛttaḥ,
ca rāmaḥ āraṇyam āśritaḥ ca jīvaloke aham ayaśaḥ tvayā pratipāditaḥ
6. Because of you, my father has died, and Rama has gone to the forest. And through your actions, I have been subjected to dishonor (ayaśas) in the mortal world.
मातृरूपे ममामित्रे नृशंसे राज्यकामुके ।
न ते ऽहमभिभाष्यो ऽस्मि दुर्वृत्ते पतिघातिनि ॥७॥
7. mātṛrūpe mamāmitre nṛśaṃse rājyakāmuke ,
na te'hamabhibhāṣyo'smi durvṛtte patighātini.
7. mātṛrūpe mama amitre nṛśaṃse rājyakāmuke na
te aham abhibhāṣyaḥ asmi durvṛtte patighātini
7. mātṛrūpe mama amitre nṛśaṃse rājyakāmuke durvṛtte patighātini,

7. To you, my enemy in the guise of a mother, cruel, desirous of the kingdom, ill-behaved, and the slayer of your husband, I am not to be spoken.
कौसल्या च सुमित्रा च याश्चान्या मम मातरः ।
दुःखेन महताविष्टास्त्वां प्राप्य कुलदूषिणीम् ॥८॥
8. kausalyā ca sumitrā ca yāścānyā mama mātaraḥ ,
duḥkhena mahatāviṣṭāstvāṃ prāpya kuladūṣiṇīm.
8. kausalyā ca sumitrā ca yāḥ ca anyāḥ mama mātaraḥ
duḥkhena mahatā āviṣṭāḥ tvām prāpya kuladūṣiṇīm
8. kausalyā ca sumitrā ca yāḥ ca anyāḥ mama mātaraḥ,
kuladūṣiṇīm tvām prāpya,
mahatā duḥkhena āviṣṭāḥ
8. Kausalya and Sumitra, and my other mothers, are afflicted with great sorrow because of you, the disgracer of the family.
न त्वमश्वपतेः कन्या धर्मराजस्य धीमतः ।
राक्षसी तत्र जातासि कुलप्रध्वंसिनी पितुः ॥९॥
9. na tvamaśvapateḥ kanyā dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ ,
rākṣasī tatra jātāsi kulapradhvaṃsinī pituḥ.
9. na tvam aśvapateḥ kanyā dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ
rākṣasī tatra jātā asi kulapradhvaṃsinī pituḥ
9. tvam aśvapateḥ dhīmataḥ dharmarājasya kanyā na.
tatra rākṣasī kulapradhvaṃsinī pituḥ jātā asi
9. You are not the daughter of the wise Ashvapati, the king of natural law (dharma). Rather, you were born there as a female demon, the destroyer of your father's lineage.
यत्त्वया धार्मिको रामो नित्यं सत्यपरायणः ।
वनं प्रस्थापितो दुःखात् पिता च त्रिदिवं गतः ॥१०॥
10. yattvayā dhārmiko rāmo nityaṃ satyaparāyaṇaḥ ,
vanaṃ prasthāpito duḥkhāt pitā ca tridivaṃ gataḥ.
10. yat tvayā dhārmikaḥ rāmaḥ nityam satyapārāyaṇaḥ
vanam prasthāpitaḥ duḥkhāt pitā ca tridivam gataḥ
10. yat tvayā dhārmikaḥ nityam satyapārāyaṇaḥ rāmaḥ vanam prasthāpitaḥ,
ca duḥkhāt pitā tridivam gataḥ
10. Because by you the righteous Rama, who was always devoted to truth, was sent to the forest, and our father, due to sorrow, went to heaven.
यत् प्रधानासि तत् पापं मयि पित्रा विनाकृते ।
भ्रातृभ्यां च परित्यक्ते सर्वलोकस्य चाप्रिये ॥११॥
11. yat pradhānāsi tat pāpaṃ mayi pitrā vinākṛte ,
bhrātṛbhyāṃ ca parityakte sarvalokasya cāpriye.
11. yat pradhānā asi tat pāpam mayi pitrā vinākṛte
bhrātṛbhyām ca parityakte sarvalokasya ca apriye
11. yat pāpam tvam pradhānā asi,
tat mayi pitrā vinākṛte,
bhrātṛbhyām ca parityakte,
sarvalokasya ca apriye (nipatati).
11. The sin that you instigate will fall upon me, who am deprived of my father, abandoned by my two brothers, and disliked by all people.
कौसल्यां धर्मसंयुक्तां वियुक्तां पापनिश्चये ।
कृत्वा कं प्राप्स्यसे त्वद्य लोकं निरयगामिनी ॥१२॥
12. kausalyāṃ dharmasaṃyuktāṃ viyuktāṃ pāpaniścaye ,
kṛtvā kaṃ prāpsyase tvadya lokaṃ nirayagāminī.
12. kausalyām dharmasaṃyuktām viyuktām pāpaniścaye
kṛtvā kam prāpsyase tvam adya lokam nirayagāminī
12. (he) nirayagāminī,
tvam adya dharmasaṃyuktām kausalyām (rāmeṇa) pāpaniścaye viyuktām kṛtvā kam lokam prāpsyase?
12. Having separated Kausalyā, who is endowed with (dharma), by your sinful decision, what world will you, who are destined for hell, obtain today?
किं नावबुध्यसे क्रूरे नियतं बन्धुसंश्रयम् ।
ज्येष्ठं पितृसमं रामं कौसल्यायात्मसंभवम् ॥१३॥
13. kiṃ nāvabudhyase krūre niyataṃ bandhusaṃśrayam ,
jyeṣṭhaṃ pitṛsamaṃ rāmaṃ kausalyāyātmasaṃbhavam.
13. kim na avabudhyase krūre niyatam bandhusaṃśrayam
jyeṣṭham pitṛsamam rāmam kausalyāyāḥ ātmasaṃbhavam
13. he krūre,
tvam niyatam bandhusaṃśrayam,
jyeṣṭham,
pitṛsamam,
kausalyāyāḥ ātmasaṃbhavam rāmam kim na avabudhyase?
13. Cruel one, why do you not understand Rāma, who is the certain refuge of relatives, the eldest, equal to his father, and Kausalyā's own son?
अङ्गप्रत्यङ्गजः पुत्रो हृदयाच्चापि जायते ।
तस्मात् प्रियतरो मातुः प्रियत्वान्न तु बान्धवः ॥१४॥
14. aṅgapratyaṅgajaḥ putro hṛdayāccāpi jāyate ,
tasmāt priyataro mātuḥ priyatvānna tu bāndhavaḥ.
14. aṅgapratyaṅgajaḥ putraḥ hṛdayāt ca api jāyate
tasmāt priyataraḥ mātuḥ priyatvāt na tu bāndhavaḥ
14. putraḥ aṅgapratyaṅgajaḥ (asti) ca api hṛdayāt jāyate.
tasmāt priyatvāt saḥ mātuḥ priyataraḥ (asti),
tu bāndhavaḥ na.
14. A son is born from every limb and part of the body, and also from the heart. Therefore, because of his dearness, he is dearer to his mother than any other relative.
अन्यदा किल धर्मज्ञा सुरभिः सुरसंमता ।
वहमानौ ददर्शोर्व्यां पुत्रौ विगतचेतसौ ॥१५॥
15. anyadā kila dharmajñā surabhiḥ surasaṃmatā ,
vahamānau dadarśorvyāṃ putrau vigatacetasau.
15. anyadā kila dharmajñā surabhiḥ surasaṃmatā
vahamānau dadarśa urvyām putrau vigatacetasau
15. surabhiḥ dharmajñā surasaṃmatā anyadā kila
urvyām vahamānau vigatacetasau putrau dadarśa
15. Once, Surabhi, who understood (natural) law (dharma) and was revered by the gods, saw her two sons on the earth, carrying burdens and utterly exhausted.
तावर्धदिवसे श्रान्तौ दृष्ट्वा पुत्रौ महीतले ।
रुरोद पुत्र शोकेन बाष्पपर्याकुलेक्षणा ॥१६॥
16. tāvardhadivase śrāntau dṛṣṭvā putrau mahītale ,
ruroda putra śokena bāṣpaparyākulekṣaṇā.
16. tau ardhadivase śrāntau dṛṣṭvā putrau mahītale
ruroda putraśokena bāṣpaparyākulekṣaṇā
16. tau ardhadivase mahītale śrāntau putrau
dṛṣṭvā putraśokena bāṣpaparyākulekṣaṇā ruroda
16. Seeing her two sons exhausted on the ground at midday, she wept from sorrow for her sons, her eyes agitated by tears.
अधस्ताद्व्रजतस्तस्याः सुरराज्ञो महात्मनः ।
बिन्दवः पतिता गात्रे सूक्ष्माः सुरभिगन्धिनः ॥१७॥
17. adhastādvrajatastasyāḥ surarājño mahātmanaḥ ,
bindavaḥ patitā gātre sūkṣmāḥ surabhigandhinaḥ.
17. adhastāt vrajataḥ tasyāḥ surarājñaḥ mahātmanaḥ
bindavaḥ patitāḥ gātre sūkṣmāḥ surabhigandhinaḥ
17. tasyāḥ adhastāt vrajataḥ surarājñaḥ mahātmanaḥ
gātre sūkṣmāḥ surabhigandhinaḥ bindavaḥ patitāḥ
17. As the great-souled king of gods (Indra) was passing beneath her, subtle, fragrant drops fell upon his body.
तां दृष्ट्वा शोकसंतप्तां वज्रपाणिर्यशस्विनीम् ।
इन्द्रः प्राञ्जलिरुद्विग्नः सुरराजो ऽब्रवीद्वचः ॥१८॥
18. tāṃ dṛṣṭvā śokasaṃtaptāṃ vajrapāṇiryaśasvinīm ,
indraḥ prāñjalirudvignaḥ surarājo'bravīdvacaḥ.
18. tām dṛṣṭvā śokasaṃtaptām vajrapāṇiḥ yaśasvinīm
indraḥ prāñjaliḥ udvignaḥ surarājaḥ abravīt vacaḥ
18. vajrapāṇiḥ yaśasvinīm śokasaṃtaptām tām dṛṣṭvā
prāñjaliḥ udvignaḥ surarājaḥ indraḥ vacaḥ abravīt
18. Seeing her, glorious and tormented by grief, Indra, the bearer of the thunderbolt (Vajrapani) and king of gods, became agitated and, with folded hands, spoke these words.
भयं कच्चिन्न चास्मासु कुतश्चिद्विद्यते महत् ।
कुतो निमित्तः शोकस्ते ब्रूहि सर्वहितैषिणि ॥१९॥
19. bhayaṃ kaccinna cāsmāsu kutaścidvidyate mahat ,
kuto nimittaḥ śokaste brūhi sarvahitaiṣiṇi.
19. bhayam kaccit na ca asmāsu kutaścit vidyate mahat
| kutaḥ nimittaḥ śokaḥ te brūhi sarvahiteṣiṇi
19. sarvahiteṣiṇi asmāsu kutaścit mahat bhayam kaccit
na ca vidyate te śokaḥ kutaḥ nimittaḥ brūhi
19. Is it that no great fear exists for us from any quarter? What is the cause of your sorrow? Tell me, O well-wisher of all.
एवमुक्ता तु सुरभिः सुरराजेन धीमता ।
पत्युवाच ततो धीरा वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदा ॥२०॥
20. evamuktā tu surabhiḥ surarājena dhīmatā ,
patyuvāca tato dhīrā vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradā.
20. evam uktā tu surabhiḥ surarājena dhīmatā |
pati uvāca tataḥ dhīrā vākyam vākyaviśāradā
20. evam dhīmatā surarājena uktā tu,
tataḥ dhīrā vākyaviśāradā surabhiḥ vākyam pati uvāca
20. Thus addressed by the intelligent king of gods, the resolute Surabhi, skilled in speech, then replied to the lord with these words.
शान्तं पातं न वः किं चित् कुतश्चिदमराधिप ।
अहं तु मग्नौ शोचामि स्वपुत्रौ विषमे स्थितौ ॥२१॥
21. śāntaṃ pātaṃ na vaḥ kiṃ cit kutaścidamarādhipa ,
ahaṃ tu magnau śocāmi svaputrau viṣame sthitau.
21. śāntam pātam na vaḥ kim cit kutaścit amarādhipa
| aham tu magnau śocāmi svaputrau viṣame sthitau
21. amarādhipa,
vaḥ śāntam (asti),
kutaścit kim cit pātam na (asti).
aham tu magnau viṣame sthitau svaputrau śocāmi
21. O king of immortals, there is peace for you all, and no harm (will come) to you from any quarter. But I grieve for my own two sons, who are in a dire situation.
एतौ दृष्ट्वा कृषौ दीनौ सूर्यरश्मिप्रतापिनौ ।
वध्यमानौ बलीवर्दौ कर्षकेण सुराधिप ॥२२॥
22. etau dṛṣṭvā kṛṣau dīnau sūryaraśmipratāpinau ,
vadhyamānau balīvardau karṣakeṇa surādhipa.
22. etau dṛṣṭvā kṛśau dīnau sūryaraśmipratāpinau
| vadhyamānau balīvardau karṣakeṇa surādhipa
22. surādhipa,
karṣakeṇa sūryaraśmipratāpinau vadhyamānau kṛśau dīnau etau balīvardau dṛṣṭvā (aham śocāmi)
22. O lord of gods, having seen these two emaciated and miserable oxen, tormented by the sun's rays and being beaten by the farmer, (I grieve).
मम कायात् प्रसूतौ हि दुःखितौ भार पीडितौ ।
यौ दृष्ट्वा परितप्ये ऽहं नास्ति पुत्रसमः प्रियः ॥२३॥
23. mama kāyāt prasūtau hi duḥkhitau bhāra pīḍitau ,
yau dṛṣṭvā paritapye'haṃ nāsti putrasamaḥ priyaḥ.
23. mama kāyāt prasūtau hi duḥkhitau bhārapīḍitau yau
dṛṣṭvā paritapye aham na asti putrasamaḥ priyaḥ
23. aham mama kāyāt prasūtau hi duḥkhitau bhārapīḍitau
yau dṛṣṭvā paritapye putrasamaḥ priyaḥ na asti
23. Indeed, seeing these two, born from my body, who are distressed and oppressed by a burden, I lament. There is no one as dear as a son.
यस्याः पुत्र सहस्राणि सापि शोचति कामधुक् ।
किं पुनर्या विना रामं कौसल्या वर्तयिष्यति ॥२४॥
24. yasyāḥ putra sahasrāṇi sāpi śocati kāmadhuk ,
kiṃ punaryā vinā rāmaṃ kausalyā vartayiṣyati.
24. yasyāḥ putrasahasrāṇi sā api śocati kāmadhuk
kim punaḥ yā vinā rāmam kausalyā vartayiṣyati
24. yasyāḥ putrasahasrāṇi sā kāmadhuk api śocati
kim punaḥ yā kausalyā rāmam vinā vartayiṣyati
24. Even the wish-fulfilling cow (Kāmadhuk), who has thousands of sons, grieves. How then will Kauśalyā survive without Rāma?
एकपुत्रा च साध्वी च विवत्सेयं त्वया कृता ।
तस्मात्त्वं सततं दुःखं प्रेत्य चेह च लप्स्यसे ॥२५॥
25. ekaputrā ca sādhvī ca vivatseyaṃ tvayā kṛtā ,
tasmāttvaṃ satataṃ duḥkhaṃ pretya ceha ca lapsyase.
25. ekaputrā ca sādhvī ca vivatsā iyam tvayā kṛtā tasmāt
tvam satatam duḥkham pretya ca iha ca lapsyase
25. tvayā iyam ekaputrā ca sādhvī ca vivatsā kṛtā tasmāt
tvam pretya ca iha ca satatam duḥkham lapsyase
25. This virtuous woman, who has only one son, has been made childless by you. Therefore, you will constantly experience sorrow (duḥkha) both in this world and in the next (after death).
अहं ह्यपचितिं भ्रातुः पितुश्च सकलामिमाम् ।
वर्धनं यशसश्चापि करिष्यामि न संशयः ॥२६॥
26. ahaṃ hyapacitiṃ bhrātuḥ pituśca sakalāmimām ,
vardhanaṃ yaśasaścāpi kariṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ.
26. aham hi apacitim bhrātuḥ pituḥ ca sakalām imām
vardhanam yaśasaḥ ca api kariṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ
26. aham hi bhrātuḥ ca pituḥ ca imām sakalām apacitim
yaśasaḥ vardhanam ca api kariṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ
26. Indeed, without a doubt, I shall render all this homage to my brother and father, and also augment their glory.
आनाययित्वा तनयं कौसल्याया महाद्युतिम् ।
स्वयमेव प्रवेक्ष्यामि वनं मुनिनिषेवितम् ॥२७॥
27. ānāyayitvā tanayaṃ kausalyāyā mahādyutim ,
svayameva pravekṣyāmi vanaṃ muniniṣevitam.
27. ānāyayitvā tanayam kausalyāyāḥ mahādyutim
svayam eva pravekṣyāmi vanam muniniṣevitam
27. svayam eva pravekṣyāmi vanam muniniṣevitam
ānāyayitvā tanayam kausalyāyāḥ mahādyutim
27. After bringing back Kausalya's greatly radiant son, I myself will enter the forest frequented by sages.
इति नाग इवारण्ये तोमराङ्कुशचोदितः ।
पपात भुवि संक्रुद्धो निःश्वसन्निव पन्नगः ॥२८॥
28. iti nāga ivāraṇye tomarāṅkuśacoditaḥ ,
papāta bhuvi saṃkruddho niḥśvasanniva pannagaḥ.
28. iti nāgaḥ iva araṇye tomarāṅkuśacoditaḥ papāta
bhuvi saṃkruddhaḥ niḥśvasan iva pannagaḥ
28. iti saṃkruddhaḥ pannagaḥ iva niḥśvasan
tomarāṅkuśacoditaḥ nāgaḥ iva araṇye bhuvi papāta
28. Thus, like an elephant in the forest driven by a spear and a goad, he fell to the ground, greatly enraged, sighing like a serpent.
संरक्तनेत्रः शिथिलाम्बरस्तदा विधूतसर्वाभरणः परंतपः ।
बभूव भूमौ पतितो नृपात्मजः शचीपतेः केतुरिवोत्सवक्षये ॥२९॥
29. saṃraktanetraḥ śithilāmbarastadā vidhūtasarvābharaṇaḥ paraṃtapaḥ ,
babhūva bhūmau patito nṛpātmajaḥ śacīpateḥ keturivotsavakṣaye.
29. saṃraktanetraḥ śithilāmbaraḥ tadā
vidhūtasarvābharaṇaḥ paraṃtapaḥ
babhūva bhūmau patitaḥ nṛpātmajaḥ
śacīpateḥ ketuḥ iva utsavakṣaye
29. tadā paraṃtapaḥ nṛpātmajaḥ saṃraktanetraḥ śithilāmbaraḥ vidhūtasarvābharaṇaḥ bhūmau patitaḥ,
utsavakṣaye śacīpateḥ ketuḥ iva babhūva
29. Then, the king's son, the tormentor of foes (paraṃtapa), with bloodshot eyes, loosened garments, and all ornaments cast off, lay fallen on the ground like Indra's banner at the end of a festival.
