तमल्पजीवितं भूमौ स्फुरन्तं राक्षसाधिपः ।
ददर्श गृध्रं पतितं समीपे राघवाश्रमात् ॥१॥

1. The lord of the Rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa) saw that vulture, fallen on the ground, barely alive and still quivering, near Rāma's hermitage.
सा तु ताराधिपमुखी रावणेन समीक्ष्य तम् ।
गृध्रराजं विनिहतं विललाप सुदुःखिता ॥२॥
2. sā tu tārādhipamukhī rāvaṇena samīkṣya tam ,
gṛdhrarājaṃ vinihataṃ vilalāpa suduḥkhitā.

2. But she, whose face resembled the moon, having seen that king of vultures (Jaṭāyu) killed by Rāvaṇa, became extremely distressed and lamented.
निमित्तं लक्षणज्ञानं शकुनिस्वरदर्शनम् ।
अवश्यं सुखदुःखेषु नराणां प्रतिदृश्यते ॥३॥
3. nimittaṃ lakṣaṇajñānaṃ śakunisvaradarśanam ,
avaśyaṃ sukhaduḥkheṣu narāṇāṃ pratidṛśyate.

3. Omens, the knowledge of auspicious marks, and the perception of bird sounds are certainly observed by humans in both their joys and their sorrows.
न नूनं राम जानासि महद्व्यसनमात्मजः ।
धावन्ति नूनं काकुत्स्थ मदर्थं मृगपक्षिणः ॥४॥
4. na nūnaṃ rāma jānāsi mahadvyasanamātmajaḥ ,
dhāvanti nūnaṃ kākutstha madarthaṃ mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ.
4. na nūnam rāma jānāsi mahat vyasanam ātma-jaḥ |
dhāvanti nūnam kākutstha mad-artham mṛga-pakṣiṇaḥ

4. Indeed, O Rāma, my beloved, you surely do not know my great distress. Indeed, O Kakutstha, animals and birds are certainly running for my sake.
त्राहि मामद्य काकुत्स्थ लक्ष्मणेति वराङ्गना ।
सुसंत्रस्ता समाक्रन्दच्छृण्वतां तु यथान्तिके ॥५॥
5. trāhi māmadya kākutstha lakṣmaṇeti varāṅganā ,
susaṃtrastā samākrandacchṛṇvatāṃ tu yathāntike.
5. trāhi mām adya kākutstha lakṣmaṇa iti varāṅganā |
susantrastā samākrandat śṛṇvatām tu yathā antike

5. "O Kakutstha, O Lakṣmaṇa, save me today!" - thus the beautiful woman, greatly terrified, cried out as if within earshot of those who were listening.
तां क्लिष्टमाल्याभरणां विलपन्तीमनाथवत् ।
अभ्यधावत वैदेहीं रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ॥६॥
6. tāṃ kliṣṭamālyābharaṇāṃ vilapantīmanāthavat ,
abhyadhāvata vaidehīṃ rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ.

6. Rāvaṇa, the king of rākṣasas, ran towards Vaidehī (Sītā), who had damaged garlands and ornaments and was lamenting like one without a protector.
तां लतामिव वेष्टन्तीमालिङ्गन्तीं महाद्रुमान् ।
मुञ्च मुञ्चेति बहुशः प्रवदन् राक्षसाधिपः ॥७॥
7. tāṃ latāmiva veṣṭantīmāliṅgantīṃ mahādrumān ,
muñca muñceti bahuśaḥ pravadan rākṣasādhipaḥ.
7. tām latām iva veṣṭantīm āliṅgantīm mahā-drumān |
muñca muñca iti bahuśaḥ pravadan rākṣasa-adhipaḥ
7. rākṣasa-adhipaḥ bahuśaḥ muñca muñca iti pravadan

7. The king of rākṣasas, repeatedly saying "Release! Release!", approached her as she clung to great trees, embracing them like a creeper.
क्रोशन्तीं राम रामेति रामेण रहितां वने ।
जीवितान्ताय केशेषु जग्राहान्तकसंनिभः ॥८॥
8. krośantīṃ rāma rāmeti rāmeṇa rahitāṃ vane ,
jīvitāntāya keśeṣu jagrāhāntakasaṃnibhaḥ.
8. krośantīm rāma rāma iti rāmeṇa rahitām vane
jīvitāntāya keśeṣu jagrāha antakasaṃnibhaḥ

8. Crying out "Rama, Rama!" while abandoned by Rama in the forest, he, who resembled the bringer of death, seized her by the hair as if to end her life.
प्रधर्षितायां वैदेह्यां बभूव सचराचरम् ।
जगत् सर्वममर्यादं तमसान्धेन संवृतम् ॥९॥
9. pradharṣitāyāṃ vaidehyāṃ babhūva sacarācaram ,
jagat sarvamamaryādaṃ tamasāndhena saṃvṛtam.
9. pradharṣitāyām vaidehyām babhūva sa-carācaram
jagat sarvam amaryādam tamasā andhena saṃvṛtam
9. vaidehyām pradharṣitāyām sa-carācaram sarvam

9. When Vaidehi was assaulted, the entire universe, including all moving and non-moving beings, became devoid of order (amaryāda) and was enveloped by a blind darkness.
दृष्ट्वा सीतां परामृष्टां दीनां दिव्येन चक्षुषा ।
कृतं कार्यमिति श्रीमान् व्याजहार पितामहः ॥१०॥
10. dṛṣṭvā sītāṃ parāmṛṣṭāṃ dīnāṃ divyena cakṣuṣā ,
kṛtaṃ kāryamiti śrīmān vyājahāra pitāmahaḥ.
10. dṛṣṭvā sītām parāmṛṣṭām dīnām divyena cakṣuṣā
kṛtam kāryam iti śrīmān vyājahāra pitāmahaḥ

10. Having observed Sita, molested and distressed, through his divine vision, the illustrious Grandfather (Brahmā) declared, "The task is accomplished."
प्रहृष्टा व्यथिताश्चासन् सर्वे ते परमर्षयः ।
दृष्ट्वा सीतां परामृष्टां दण्डकारण्यवासिनः ॥११॥
11. prahṛṣṭā vyathitāścāsan sarve te paramarṣayaḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā sītāṃ parāmṛṣṭāṃ daṇḍakāraṇyavāsinaḥ.
11. prahṛṣṭāḥ vyathitāḥ ca āsan sarve te paramarṣayaḥ
dṛṣṭvā sītām parāmṛṣṭām daṇḍakāraṇyavāsinaḥ

11. All those great sages dwelling in the Dandaka forest were simultaneously delighted and distressed upon witnessing Sita's molestation.
स तु तां राम रामेति रुदन्तीं लक्ष्मणेति च ।
जगामाकाशमादाय रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ॥१२॥
12. sa tu tāṃ rāma rāmeti rudantīṃ lakṣmaṇeti ca ,
jagāmākāśamādāya rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ.
12. saḥ tu tām rāma rāma iti rudantīm lakṣmaṇa iti
ca jagāma ākāśam ādāya rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasa-adhipaḥ
12. rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasa-adhipaḥ saḥ tu tām rāma rāma
iti lakṣmaṇa iti ca rudantīm ākāśam ādāya jagāma
12. But Ravana, the lord of the Rākṣasas, carried her, crying "Rama, Rama!" and "Lakshmana!", into the sky.
तप्ताभरणसर्वाङ्गी पीतकौशेयवासनी ।
रराज राजपुत्री तु विद्युत् सौदामनी यथा ॥१३॥
13. taptābharaṇasarvāṅgī pītakauśeyavāsanī ,
rarāja rājaputrī tu vidyut saudāmanī yathā.

13. The princess, with all her limbs adorned with glowing ornaments and wearing a yellow silk garment, shone radiantly, just like a flash of lightning (saudāminī).
उद्धूतेन च वस्त्रेण तस्याः पीतेन रावणः ।
अधिकं परिबभ्राज गिरिर्दीप इवाग्निना ॥१४॥
14. uddhūtena ca vastreṇa tasyāḥ pītena rāvaṇaḥ ,
adhikaṃ paribabhrāja girirdīpa ivāgninā.

adhikam paribabhrāja giriḥ dīpaḥ iva agninā

14. And with her fluttering yellow garment, Ravana shone with even greater brilliance, like a mountain illuminated by fire.
तस्याः परमकल्याण्यास्ताम्राणि सुरभीणि च ।
पद्मपत्राणि वैदेह्या अभ्यकीर्यन्त रावणम् ॥१५॥
15. tasyāḥ paramakalyāṇyāstāmrāṇi surabhīṇi ca ,
padmapatrāṇi vaidehyā abhyakīryanta rāvaṇam.
15. tasyāḥ paramakalyāṇyāḥ tāmrāṇi surabhīṇi ca
padmapatrāṇi vaidehyāḥ abhyakīryanta rāvaṇam

15. From that supremely auspicious Vaidehi, reddish and fragrant lotus petals were scattered upon Ravana.
तस्याः कौशेयमुद्धूतमाकाशे कनकप्रभम् ।
बभौ चादित्यरागेण ताम्रमभ्रमिवातपे ॥१६॥
16. tasyāḥ kauśeyamuddhūtamākāśe kanakaprabham ,
babhau cādityarāgeṇa tāmramabhramivātape.
16. tasyāḥ kauśeyam uddhūtam ākāśe kanakaprabham
babhau ca ādityarāgeṇa tāmram abhram iva ātape

16. Her silken garment, tossed up into the sky, shone with a golden radiance. And it gleamed copper-red from the sun's rays, just like a cloud in the sunlight.
तस्यास्तद्विमलं वक्त्रमाकाशे रावणाङ्कगम् ।
न रराज विना रामं विनालमिव पङ्कजम् ॥१७॥
17. tasyāstadvimalaṃ vaktramākāśe rāvaṇāṅkagam ,
na rarāja vinā rāmaṃ vinālamiva paṅkajam.
17. tasyāḥ tat vimalam vaktram ākāśe rāvaṇāṅkagam
na rarāja vinā rāmam vinālam iva paṅkajam

17. Her pure face (vaktra), though resting in Rāvaṇa's lap in the sky, did not shine without Rāma, just like a lotus (paṅkaja) without its stalk.
बभूव जलदं नीलं भित्त्वा चन्द्र इवोदितः ।
सुललाटं सुकेशान्तं पद्मगर्भाभमव्रणम् ।
शुक्लैः सुविमलैर्दन्तैः प्रभावद्भिरलंकृतम् ॥१८॥
18. babhūva jaladaṃ nīlaṃ bhittvā candra ivoditaḥ ,
sulalāṭaṃ sukeśāntaṃ padmagarbhābhamavraṇam ,
śuklaiḥ suvimalairdantaiḥ prabhāvadbhiralaṃkṛtam.

iva uditaḥ sulalāṭam sukeśāntam
padmagarbhābham avraṇam śuklaiḥ suvimalaiḥ

dantaiḥ alaṅkṛtam (vaktram) babhūva
18. (Her face) appeared like the moon risen after piercing a dark blue cloud. It had a beautiful forehead, lovely hair-ends, the radiance of a lotus bud, and was flawless. It was adorned with bright, very pure, radiant teeth.
रुदितं व्यपमृष्टास्त्रं चन्द्रवत् प्रियदर्शनम् ।
सुनासं चारुताम्रौष्ठमाकाषे हाटकप्रभम् ॥१९॥
19. ruditaṃ vyapamṛṣṭāstraṃ candravat priyadarśanam ,
sunāsaṃ cārutāmrauṣṭhamākāṣe hāṭakaprabham.
19. ruditam vyapamṛṣṭāsram candravat priyadarśanam
sunāsam cārutāmrauṣṭham ākāśe hāṭakaprabham
19. vyapamṛṣṭāsram ruditam candravat priyadarśanam sunāsam
cārutāmrauṣṭham (vaktram) ākāśe hāṭakaprabham (āsīt)
19. (Her face), with tears wiped away, was pleasing to behold like the moon. It had a beautiful nose and lovely reddish lips, and in the sky, it glowed with the brilliance of gold.
राक्षसेन्द्रसमाधूतं तस्यास्तद्वचनं शुभम् ।
शुशुभे न विना रामं दिवा चन्द्र इवोदितः ॥२०॥
20. rākṣasendrasamādhūtaṃ tasyāstadvacanaṃ śubham ,
śuśubhe na vinā rāmaṃ divā candra ivoditaḥ.
20. rākṣasendra-samādhūtam tasyāḥ tat vacanam śubham
śuśubhe na vinā rāmam divā candraḥ iva uditaḥ
20. tasyāḥ śubham tat vacanam rākṣasendrasamādhūtam
rāmam vinā divā uditaḥ candraḥ iva na śuśubhe
20. Her auspicious words, though addressed by the lord of demons (Ravana), did not appear beautiful without Rama, just like the moon rising during the day.
सा हेमवर्णा नीलाङ्गं मैथिली राक्षसाधिपम् ।
शुशुभे काञ्चनी काञ्ची नीलं मणिमिवाश्रिता ॥२१॥
21. sā hemavarṇā nīlāṅgaṃ maithilī rākṣasādhipam ,
śuśubhe kāñcanī kāñcī nīlaṃ maṇimivāśritā.
21. sā hemavarṇā nīlāṅgam maithilī rākṣasādhipam
śuśubhe kāñcanī kāñcī nīlam maṇim iva āśritā
21. sā hemavarṇā maithilī nīlāṅgam rākṣasādhipam āśritā
(satī) nīlam maṇim āśritā kāñcanī kāñcī iva śuśubhe
21. That golden-complexioned Maithili (Sita), leaning against the blue-bodied lord of demons (Ravana), shone like a golden girdle wrapped around a blue gem.
सा पद्मगौरी हेमाभा रावणं जनकात्मजा ।
विद्युद्घनमिवाविश्य शुशुभे तप्तभूषणा ॥२२॥
22. sā padmagaurī hemābhā rāvaṇaṃ janakātmajā ,
vidyudghanamivāviśya śuśubhe taptabhūṣaṇā.
22. sā padmagaurī hemābhā rāvaṇam janakātmajā
vidyudghanam iva āviśya śuśubhe taptabhūṣaṇā
22. sā padmagaurī hemābhā janakātmajā rāvaṇam āviśya
taptabhūṣaṇā (satī) vidyudghanam iva śuśubhe
22. That daughter of Janaka (Sita), fair as a lotus and lustrous like gold, appeared beautiful, her ornaments shining brightly, as she stood before Ravana, just like lightning illuminating a cloud.
तस्या भूषणघोषेण वैदेह्या राक्षसाधिपः ।
बभूव विमलो नीलः सघोष इव तोयदः ॥२३॥
23. tasyā bhūṣaṇaghoṣeṇa vaidehyā rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
babhūva vimalo nīlaḥ saghoṣa iva toyadaḥ.
23. tasyāḥ bhūṣaṇaghoṣeṇa vaidehyāḥ rākṣasādhipaḥ
babhūva vimalaḥ nīlaḥ saghoṣaḥ iva toyadaḥ
23. vaidehyāḥ tasyāḥ bhūṣaṇaghoṣeṇa rākṣasādhipaḥ
saghoṣaḥ toyadaḥ iva vimalaḥ nīlaḥ babhūva
23. Due to the tinkling sound of Vaidehi's (Sita's) ornaments, the lord of demons (Ravana) appeared clear and blue, like a noisy cloud.
उत्तमाङ्गच्युता तस्याः पुष्पवृष्टिः समन्ततः ।
सीताया ह्रियमाणायाः पपात धरणीतले ॥२४॥
24. uttamāṅgacyutā tasyāḥ puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ samantataḥ ,
sītāyā hriyamāṇāyāḥ papāta dharaṇītale.
24. uttamāṅgacyutā tasyāḥ puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ samantataḥ
sītāyāḥ hriyamāṇāyāḥ papāta dharaṇītale

24. As Sītā was being abducted, a shower of flowers, which had fallen from her head, scattered everywhere and descended upon the ground.
सा तु रावणवेगेन पुष्पवृष्टिः समन्ततः ।
समाधूता दशग्रीवं पुनरेवाभ्यवर्तत ॥२५॥
25. sā tu rāvaṇavegena puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ samantataḥ ,
samādhūtā daśagrīvaṃ punarevābhyavartata.
25. sā tu rāvaṇavegena puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ samantataḥ
samādhūtā daśagrīvam punaḥ eva abhyavartata
25. sā puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ tu rāvaṇavegena samantataḥ

25. But that very shower of flowers, scattered everywhere by the speed of Rāvaṇa, turned back again towards Daśagrīva.
अभ्यवर्तत पुष्पाणां धारा वैश्रवणानुजम् ।
नक्षत्रमालाविमला मेरुं नगमिवोत्तमम् ॥२६॥
26. abhyavartata puṣpāṇāṃ dhārā vaiśravaṇānujam ,
nakṣatramālāvimalā meruṃ nagamivottamam.
26. abhyavartata puṣpāṇām dhārā vaiśravaṇānujam
nakṣatramālāvimalā merum nagam iva uttamam
26. nakṣatramālāvimalā dhārā puṣpāṇām vaiśravaṇānujam

26. A stream of flowers, as luminous as a garland of stars, turned towards the younger brother of Vaiśravaṇa (Rāvaṇa), just as a pure garland of stars would encircle the supreme mountain Meru.
चरणान्नूपुरं भ्रष्टं वैदेह्या रत्नभूषितम् ।
विद्युन्मण्डलसंकाशं पपात मधुरस्वनम् ॥२७॥
27. caraṇānnūpuraṃ bhraṣṭaṃ vaidehyā ratnabhūṣitam ,
vidyunmaṇḍalasaṃkāśaṃ papāta madhurasvanam.
27. caraṇāt nūpuram bhraṣṭam vaidehyāḥ ratnabhūṣitam
vidyunmaṇḍalasaṃkāśam papāta madhurasvanam

27. An anklet, adorned with jewels, slipped from the foot of the princess of Videha (Sītā). It shone like a flash of lightning and fell with a sweet sound.
तरुप्रवालरक्ता सा नीलाङ्गं राक्षसेश्वरम् ।
प्राशोभयत वैदेही गजं कष्येव काञ्चनी ॥२८॥
28. tarupravālaraktā sā nīlāṅgaṃ rākṣaseśvaram ,
prāśobhayata vaidehī gajaṃ kaṣyeva kāñcanī.
28. tarupravalaraktā sā nīlāṅgaṃ rākṣaseśvaram
prāśobhayata vaidehī gajaṃ kaṣyā iva kāñcanī
28. sā vaidehī tarupravalaraktā nīlāṅgaṃ

28. Red like a fresh tree sprout, Vaidehī (Sītā) made the blue-bodied lord of demons resplendent, just as golden ornamentation (kaṣyā) would an elephant.
तां महोल्कामिवाकाशे दीप्यमानां स्वतेजसा ।
जहाराकाशमाविश्य सीतां वैश्रवणानुजः ॥२९॥
29. tāṃ maholkāmivākāśe dīpyamānāṃ svatejasā ,
jahārākāśamāviśya sītāṃ vaiśravaṇānujaḥ.
29. tām maholkām iva ākāśe dīpyamānām svatejasā
jahāra ākāśam āviśya sītām vaiśravaṇānūjaḥ
29. vaiśravaṇānūjaḥ ākāśam āviśya svatejasā
dīpyamānām maholkām iva tām sītām ākāśe jahāra
29. The younger brother of Vaiśravaṇa (Rāvaṇa), having entered the sky, carried away Sītā, who was shining with her own radiance, like a great meteor in the sky.
तस्यास्तान्यग्निवर्णानि भूषणानि महीतले ।
सघोषाण्यवकीर्यन्त क्षीणास्तारा इवाम्बरात् ॥३०॥
30. tasyāstānyagnivarṇāni bhūṣaṇāni mahītale ,
saghoṣāṇyavakīryanta kṣīṇāstārā ivāmbarāt.

30. Her fiery ornaments, with a clamor, fell scattered onto the ground, just like faded stars (tārāḥ) falling from the sky.
तस्याः स्तनान्तराद्भ्रष्टो हारस्ताराधिपद्युतिः ।
वैदेह्या निपतन्भाति गङ्गेव गगनाच्च्युता ॥३१॥
31. tasyāḥ stanāntarādbhraṣṭo hārastārādhipadyutiḥ ,
vaidehyā nipatanbhāti gaṅgeva gaganāccyutā.

31. From between Vaidehī's (Sītā's) breasts, her necklace, shining with the brilliance of the moon (tārādhipa), falls and appears like the river Gaṅgā fallen from the sky.
उत्पात वाताभिहता नानाद्विज गणायुताः ।
मा भैरिति विधूताग्रा व्याजह्रुरिव पादपाः ॥३२॥
32. utpāta vātābhihatā nānādvija gaṇāyutāḥ ,
mā bhairiti vidhūtāgrā vyājahruriva pādapāḥ.

32. The trees, assailed by stormy winds and filled with diverse flocks of birds, their swaying tops seemed to cry out, "Do not fear!"
नलिन्यो ध्वस्तकमलास्त्रस्तमीनजले चराः ।
सखीमिव गतोत्साहां शोचन्तीव स्म मैथिलीम् ॥३३॥
33. nalinyo dhvastakamalāstrastamīnajale carāḥ ,
sakhīmiva gatotsāhāṃ śocantīva sma maithilīm.

33. The lotus ponds, whose lotuses were destroyed and whose distressed fish were moving in their waters, seemed to grieve for Maithili (Sita), as if for a disheartened friend.
समन्तादभिसंपत्य सिंहव्याघ्रमृगद्विजाः ।
अन्वधावंस्तदा रोषात् सीताच्छायानुगामिनः ॥३४॥
34. samantādabhisaṃpatya siṃhavyāghramṛgadvijāḥ ,
anvadhāvaṃstadā roṣāt sītācchāyānugāminaḥ.

34. Gathering from all directions, lions, tigers, deer, and birds then pursued (the abductor) out of anger, as if they were following Sita's very shadow.
जलप्रपातास्रमुखाः शृङ्गैरुच्छ्रितबाहवः ।
सीतायां ह्रियमाणायां विक्रोशन्तीव पर्वताः ॥३५॥
35. jalaprapātāsramukhāḥ śṛṅgairucchritabāhavaḥ ,
sītāyāṃ hriyamāṇāyāṃ vikrośantīva parvatāḥ.

35. As Sita was being carried away, the mountains, whose faces streamed with tears like waterfalls and whose peaks were raised like arms, seemed to wail aloud.
ह्रियमाणां तु वैदेहीं दृष्ट्वा दीनो दिवाकरः ।
प्रविध्वस्तप्रभः श्रीमानासीत् पाण्डुरमण्डलः ॥३६॥
36. hriyamāṇāṃ tu vaidehīṃ dṛṣṭvā dīno divākaraḥ ,
pravidhvastaprabhaḥ śrīmānāsīt pāṇḍuramaṇḍalaḥ.

36. Upon seeing Vaidehi (Sita) being carried away, the sun (divākara), though glorious, became distressed, its brilliance destroyed, and its disc pale.
नास्ति धर्मः कुतः सत्यं नार्जवं नानृशंसता ।
यत्र रामस्य वैदेहीं भार्यां हरति रावणः ॥३७॥
37. nāsti dharmaḥ kutaḥ satyaṃ nārjavaṃ nānṛśaṃsatā ,
yatra rāmasya vaidehīṃ bhāryāṃ harati rāvaṇaḥ.

37. There is no natural law (dharma); how then can there be truth, straightforwardness, or kindness, in a place where Ravana abducts Rama's wife, Vaidehi?
इति सर्वाणि भूतानि गणशः पर्यदेवयन् ।
वित्रस्तका दीनमुखा रुरुदुर्मृगपोतकाः ॥३८॥
38. iti sarvāṇi bhūtāni gaṇaśaḥ paryadevayan ,
vitrastakā dīnamukhā rurudurmṛgapotakāḥ.

38. Thus, all creatures lamented in groups. Young deer, frightened and with sorrowful faces, cried.
उद्वीक्ष्योद्वीक्ष्य नयनैरास्रपाताविलेक्षणाः ।
सुप्रवेपितगात्राश्च बभूवुर्वनदेवताः ॥३९॥
39. udvīkṣyodvīkṣya nayanairāsrapātāvilekṣaṇāḥ ,
supravepitagātrāśca babhūvurvanadevatāḥ.

39. The forest deities, looking up repeatedly with eyes agitated by falling tears, also became greatly trembling in their bodies.
विक्रोशन्तीं दृढं सीतां दृष्ट्वा दुःखं तथा गताम् ।
तां तु लक्ष्मण रामेति क्रोशन्तीं मधुरस्वराम् ॥४०॥
40. vikrośantīṃ dṛḍhaṃ sītāṃ dṛṣṭvā duḥkhaṃ tathā gatām ,
tāṃ tu lakṣmaṇa rāmeti krośantīṃ madhurasvarām.

जहारात्मविनाशाय दशग्रीवो मनस्विनाम् ॥४१॥
41. avekṣamāṇāṃ bahuṣo vaidehīṃ dharaṇītalam ,
sa tāmākulakeśāntāṃ vipramṛṣṭaviśeṣakām ,
jahārātmavināśāya daśagrīvo manasvinām.

41. Ravana, for his own destruction (ātman), abducted her, Vaidehi (Sita), who was looking repeatedly at the ground, her hair disheveled, and her forehead mark (tilaka) wiped away; she who belonged to the noble-minded.
ततस्तु सा चारुदती शुचिस्मिता विनाकृता बन्धुजनेन मैथिली ।
अपश्यती राघवलक्ष्मणाव् उभौ विवर्णवक्त्रा भयभारपीडिता ॥४२॥
42. tatastu sā cārudatī śucismitā vinākṛtā bandhujanena maithilī ,
apaśyatī rāghavalakṣmaṇāv ubhau vivarṇavaktrā bhayabhārapīḍitā.

42. Then, that Maithili (Sita), with her beautiful teeth and pure smile, separated from her family, not seeing both Rama and Lakshmana, became pale-faced and afflicted by the heavy burden of fear.
