तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः ।
अवाक्शिरास्तथाभूतो वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥१॥
1. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ,
avākśirāstathābhūto vākyametaduvāca ha.

avākśirāḥ tathābhūtaḥ vākyam etat uvāca ha

1. Having heard those words from Rāma, whose actions were unblemished, he, with his head bowed low and in that very state, spoke these words.
शूद्रयोन्यां प्रसूतो ऽस्मि तप उग्रं समास्थितः ।
देवत्वं प्रार्थये राम सशरीरो महायशः ॥२॥
2. śūdrayonyāṃ prasūto'smi tapa ugraṃ samāsthitaḥ ,
devatvaṃ prārthaye rāma saśarīro mahāyaśaḥ.
2. śūdrayonām prasūtaḥ asmi tapaḥ ugram samāsthitaḥ
devatvam prārthaye rāma saśarīraḥ mahāyaśaḥ
2. rāma mahāyaśaḥ,
(aham) śūdrayonām prasūtaḥ asmi,
(aham) ugram tapaḥ samāsthitaḥ saśarīraḥ devatvam prārthaye
2. I am born from a śūdra lineage and have undertaken severe austerities (tapas). O Rāma, O greatly renowned one, I am praying for divinity while still in this body.
न मिथ्याहं वदे राजन्देवलोकजिगीषया ।
शूद्रं मां विद्धि काकुत्स्थ शम्बूकं नाम नामतः ॥३॥
3. na mithyāhaṃ vade rājandevalokajigīṣayā ,
śūdraṃ māṃ viddhi kākutstha śambūkaṃ nāma nāmataḥ.
3. na mithyā aham vade rājan devalokajigīṣayā śūdram
mām viddhi kākutstha śambūkam nāma nāmataḥ
3. rājan,
kākutstha,
aham devalokajigīṣayā mithyā na vade.
mām śūdram śambūkam nāma nāmataḥ viddhi.
3. O King, I do not speak falsely out of a desire to conquer the realm of the gods. O Kakutstha, know me to be a śūdra named Śambūka.
भाषतस्तस्य शूद्रस्य खड्गं सुरुचिरप्रभम् ।
निष्कृष्य कोशाद्विमलं शिरश्चिच्छेद राघवः ॥४॥
4. bhāṣatastasya śūdrasya khaḍgaṃ suruciraprabham ,
niṣkṛṣya kośādvimalaṃ śiraściccheda rāghavaḥ.
4. bhāṣataḥ tasya śūdrasya khaḍgam suruciraprabham
niṣkṛṣya kośāt vimalam śiraḥ ciccheda rāghavaḥ
4. tasya śūdrasya bhāṣataḥ (sati),
rāghavaḥ सुरुचिरप्रभम् विमलम् खड्गम् कोशात् निष्कृष्य शिरः चिच्छेद
4. While that śūdra was speaking, Rāghava drew out his exceedingly radiant, spotless sword from its sheath and cut off his head.
तस्मिन्मुहूर्ते बालो
ऽसौ जीवेन समयुज्यत ॥५॥
5. tasminmuhūrte bālo'sau
jīvena samayujyata.

asau jīvena samayujyata

5. In that moment, that child became united with life (jīva).
ततो ऽगस्त्याश्रमपदं रामः कमललोचनः ।
स गत्वा विनयेनैव तं नत्वा मुमुदे सुखी ॥६॥
6. tato'gastyāśramapadaṃ rāmaḥ kamalalocanaḥ ,
sa gatvā vinayenaiva taṃ natvā mumude sukhī.
6. tataḥ agastyāśramapadam rāmaḥ kamalalocanaḥ
saḥ gatvā vinayena eva tam natvā mumude sukhī
6. tataḥ kamalalocanaḥ rāmaḥ saḥ agastyāśramapadam
vinayena eva gatvā tam natvā sukhī mumude
6. Thereafter, the lotus-eyed Rama went to the hermitage of Agastya. Having humbly bowed to him, he rejoiced, becoming happy.
सो ऽभिवाद्य महात्मानं ज्वलन्तमिव तेजसा ।
आतिथ्यं परमं प्राप्य निषसाद नराधिपः ॥७॥
7. so'bhivādya mahātmānaṃ jvalantamiva tejasā ,
ātithyaṃ paramaṃ prāpya niṣasāda narādhipaḥ.
7. saḥ abhivādya mahātmānam jvalantam iva tejasā
ātithyam paramam prāpya niṣasāda narādhipaḥ
7. saḥ narādhipaḥ tejasā jvalantam iva mahātmānam
abhivādya paramam ātithyam prāpya niṣasāda
7. Having saluted that great soul (mahātman), who blazed as if with spiritual energy (tejas), and having received supreme hospitality, the king of men (narādhipa) sat down.
तमुवाच महातेजाः कुम्भयोनिर्महातपाः ।
स्वागतं ते नरश्रेष्ठ दिष्ट्या प्राप्तो ऽसि राघव ॥८॥
8. tamuvāca mahātejāḥ kumbhayonirmahātapāḥ ,
svāgataṃ te naraśreṣṭha diṣṭyā prāpto'si rāghava.
8. tam uvāca mahātejāḥ kumbhayoniḥ mahātapaḥ svāgatam
te naraśreṣṭha diṣṭyā prāptaḥ asi rāghava
8. mahātejāḥ kumbhayoniḥ mahātapaḥ tam uvāca
naraśreṣṭha rāghava te svāgatam diṣṭyā asi prāptaḥ
8. Then, the greatly radiant sage, Agastya (kumbhayoni), who was endowed with great austerities (mahātapas), said to him: 'Welcome to you, O best among men (naraśreṣṭha), O Raghava! It is by good fortune that you have arrived.'
त्वं मे बहुमतो राम गुणैर्बहुभिरुत्तमैः ।
अतिथिः पूजनीयश्च माम राजन् हृदि स्थितः ॥९॥
9. tvaṃ me bahumato rāma guṇairbahubhiruttamaiḥ ,
atithiḥ pūjanīyaśca māma rājan hṛdi sthitaḥ.
9. tvam me bahumataḥ rāma guṇaiḥ bahubhiḥ uttamaiḥ
| atithiḥ pūjanīyaḥ ca mām rājan hṛdi sthitaḥ
9. rāma tvam me bahumataḥ,
bahubhiḥ uttamaiḥ guṇaiḥ ca mām atithiḥ pūjanīyaḥ,
rājan hṛdi sthitaḥ
9. O Rama, you are highly esteemed by me due to your many excellent qualities. You are a guest to be honored, and O King, you reside in my heart.
सुरा हि कथयन्ति त्वामागतं शूद्रघातिनम् ।
ब्राह्मणस्य तु धर्मेण त्वया जीवापितः सुतः ॥१०॥
10. surā hi kathayanti tvāmāgataṃ śūdraghātinam ,
brāhmaṇasya tu dharmeṇa tvayā jīvāpitaḥ sutaḥ.
10. surāḥ hi kathayanti tvām āgatam śūdraghātanam
| brāhmaṇasya tu dharmeṇa tvayā jīvāpitaḥ sutaḥ
10. hi surāḥ kathayanti tvām śūdraghātanam āgatam
tu brāhmaṇasya dharmeṇa tvayā sutaḥ jīvāpitaḥ
10. Indeed, the gods describe you as having come as the slayer of a śūdra. Yet, by the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a brāhmaṇa, a son has been brought back to life by you.
उष्यतां चेह रजनीं सकाशे मम राघव ।
प्रभाते पुष्पकेण त्वं गन्ता स्वपुरमेव हि ॥११॥
11. uṣyatāṃ ceha rajanīṃ sakāśe mama rāghava ,
prabhāte puṣpakeṇa tvaṃ gantā svapurameva hi.
11. uṣyatām ca iha rajanīm sakāśe mama rāghava |
prabhāte puṣpakeṇa tvam gantā svapuram eva hi
11. rāghava ca iha rajanīm mama sakāśe uṣyatām
prabhāte tvam puṣpakeṇa svapuram eva hi gantā
11. And, O Rāghava, please spend this night here in my presence. Then, in the morning, you will certainly go to your own city by the Puṣpaka chariot.
इदं चाभरणं सौम्य निर्मितं विश्वकर्मणा ।
दिव्यं दिव्येन वपुषा दीप्यमानं स्वतेजसा ।
प्रतिगृह्णीष्व काकुत्स्थ मत्प्रियं कुरु राघव ॥१२॥
12. idaṃ cābharaṇaṃ saumya nirmitaṃ viśvakarmaṇā ,
divyaṃ divyena vapuṣā dīpyamānaṃ svatejasā ,
pratigṛhṇīṣva kākutstha matpriyaṃ kuru rāghava.
12. idam ca ābharaṇam saumya nirmitam
viśvakarmaṇā | divyam divyena vapuṣā
dīpyamānam svatejasā | pratigṛhṇīṣva
kākutstha matpriyam kuru rāghava
12. saumya rāghava kākutstha ca idam divyam ābharaṇam viśvakarmaṇā nirmitam divyena vapuṣā svatejasā dīpyamānam pratigṛhṇīṣva,
matpriyam kuru
12. O gentle one, and O Rāghava, descendant of Kakutstha, please accept this divine ornament, which was created by Viśvakarmā, possesses a divine form, and shines with its own splendor, thus doing what is dear to me.
दत्तस्य हि पुनर्दानं सुमहत् फलमुच्यते ।
तस्मात् प्रदास्ये विधिवत्तत् प्रतीच्छ नरर्षभ ॥१३॥
13. dattasya hi punardānaṃ sumahat phalamucyate ,
tasmāt pradāsye vidhivattat pratīccha nararṣabha.
13. dattasya hi punar dānam sumahat phalam ucyate |
tasmāt pradāsye vidhivat tat pratīccha nararṣabha
13. nararṣabha! dattasya hi punar dānam sumahat phalam ucyate.
tasmāt vidhivat tat pradāsye; pratīccha.
13. Indeed, giving back what has been given is said to yield a very great reward. Therefore, I shall give that properly; please accept it, O best among men.
तद् रामः प्रतिजग्राह मुनेस्तस्य महात्मनः ।
दिव्यमाभरणं चित्रं प्रदीप्तमिव भास्करम् ॥१४॥
14. tad rāmaḥ pratijagrāha munestasya mahātmanaḥ ,
divyamābharaṇaṃ citraṃ pradīptamiva bhāskaram.
14. tat rāmaḥ pratijagrāha muneḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ |
divyam ābharaṇam citram pradīptam iva bhāskaram
14. rāmaḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ muneḥ (sakāśāt) tat divyam citram ābharaṇam pratijagrāha,
(tat ca) bhāskaram iva pradīptam (āsīt).
14. Rāma then accepted that divine, wonderful ornament from that great-souled ascetic (muni), an ornament that shone like the sun.
प्रतिगृह्य ततो रामस्तदाभरणमुत्तमम् ।
आगमं तस्य दिव्यस्य प्रष्टुमेवोपचक्रमे ॥१५॥
15. pratigṛhya tato rāmastadābharaṇamuttamam ,
āgamaṃ tasya divyasya praṣṭumevopacakrame.
15. pratigṛhya tataḥ rāmaḥ tat ābharaṇam uttamam
| āgamam tasya divyasya praṣṭum eva upacakrame
15. tataḥ rāmaḥ tat uttamam ābharaṇam pratigṛhya,
tasya divyasya āgamam praṣṭum eva upacakrame.
15. Having accepted that excellent ornament, Rāma then began to inquire about the origin of that divine object.
अत्यद्भुतमिदं ब्रह्मन् वपुषा युक्तमुत्तमम् ।
कथं भगवता प्राप्तं कुतो वा केन वाहृतम् ॥१६॥
16. atyadbhutamidaṃ brahman vapuṣā yuktamuttamam ,
kathaṃ bhagavatā prāptaṃ kuto vā kena vāhṛtam.
16. atyadbhutam idam brahman vapuṣā yuktam uttamam |
katham bhagavatā prāptam kutaḥ vā kena vā āhṛtam
16. brahman! idam atyadbhutam uttamam vapuṣā yuktam (ābharaṇam);
katham bhagavatā prāptam? kutaḥ vā? kena vā āhṛtam?
16. "O Brahmin, this object, exceedingly wondrous and excellent, endowed with such beauty – how was it obtained by your revered self, or from where, or by whom was it brought?"
कुतूहलतया ब्रह्मन्पृच्छामि त्वां महायशः ।
आश्चर्याणां बहूनां हि निधिः परमको भवान् ॥१७॥
17. kutūhalatayā brahmanpṛcchāmi tvāṃ mahāyaśaḥ ,
āścaryāṇāṃ bahūnāṃ hi nidhiḥ paramako bhavān.
17. kutūhalatayā brahman pṛcchāmi tvām mahāyaśaḥ
āścaryāṇām bahūnām hi nidhiḥ paramakaḥ bhavān
17. brahman mahāyaśaḥ tvām kutūhalatayā pṛcchāmi.
hi bhavān bahūnām āścaryāṇām paramakaḥ nidhiḥ.
17. O venerable one, O greatly glorious one, I ask you out of curiosity; for indeed, you are the supreme repository of many wonders.
एवं ब्रुवति काकुत्स्थे मुनिर्वाक्यमथाब्रवीत् ।
शृणु राम यथावृत्तं पुरा त्रेतायुगे गते ॥१८॥
18. evaṃ bruvati kākutsthe munirvākyamathābravīt ,
śṛṇu rāma yathāvṛttaṃ purā tretāyuge gate.
18. evam bruvati kākutsthe muniḥ vākyam atha abravīt
śṛṇu rāma yathāvṛttam purā tretāyuge gate
18. kākutsthe evam bruvati,
muniḥ atha vākyam abravīt: "rāma,
purā tretāyuge gate,
yathāvṛttam śṛṇu.
"
18. When Kāku-stha (Rāma) spoke thus, the sage (muni) then uttered these words: 'Listen, O Rāma, to what transpired long ago, when the Tretā age (tretāyuga) had passed.'
