परं विषादमागम्य वैदेही निपपात ह ॥१॥

1. Hearing Lakshmana's harsh words, the daughter of Janaka, Vaidehi, overcome with extreme dejection, fell down.
सा मुहूर्तमिवासंज्ञा बाष्पव्याकुलितेक्षणा ।
लक्ष्मणं दीनया वाचा उवाच जनकात्मजा ॥२॥
2. sā muhūrtamivāsaṃjñā bāṣpavyākulitekṣaṇā ,
lakṣmaṇaṃ dīnayā vācā uvāca janakātmajā.
2. sā muhūrtam iva asaṃjñā bāṣpavyākulitekṣaṇā
lakṣmaṇam dīnayā vācā uvāca janakātmajā
2. sā janakātmajā muhūrtam iva asaṃjñā

2. For a moment, she, the daughter of Janaka, was as if unconscious, her eyes agitated by tears, and then she spoke to Lakshmana with a piteous voice.
मामिकेयं तनुर्नूनं सृष्टा दुःखाय लक्ष्मण ।
धात्रा यस्यास्तथा मे ऽद्य दुःखमूर्तिः प्रदृश्यते ॥३॥
3. māmikeyaṃ tanurnūnaṃ sṛṣṭā duḥkhāya lakṣmaṇa ,
dhātrā yasyāstathā me'dya duḥkhamūrtiḥ pradṛśyate.
3. māmikā iyam tanuḥ nūnam sṛṣṭā duḥkhāya lakṣmaṇa |
dhātrā yasyāḥ tathā me adya duḥkhamūrtiḥ pradṛśyate
3. lakṣmaṇa māmikā iyam tanuḥ nūnam dhātrā duḥkhāya
sṛṣṭā yasyāḥ tathā duḥkhamūrtiḥ me adya pradṛśyate
3. O Lakṣmaṇa, surely this body of mine was created for suffering (duḥkha) by the creator, since today, such a sorrowful image (duḥkhamūrti) of it appears to me.
किं नु पापं कृतं पूर्वं को वा दारैर्वियोजितः ।
याहं शुद्धसमाचारा त्यक्ता नृपतिना सती ॥४॥
4. kiṃ nu pāpaṃ kṛtaṃ pūrvaṃ ko vā dārairviyojitaḥ ,
yāhaṃ śuddhasamācārā tyaktā nṛpatinā satī.
4. kim nu pāpam kṛtam pūrvam kaḥ vā dāraiḥ viyojitaḥ
| yā aham śuddhasamācārā tyaktā nṛpatinā satī
4. kim nu pāpam pūrvam kṛtam vā kaḥ dāraiḥ viyojitaḥ
yā aham śuddhasamācārā satī nṛpatinā tyaktā
4. What sin (karma) was committed by me previously, or who was separated from his wife, such that I, a woman of pure conduct and virtue, am abandoned by the king?
पुराहमाश्रमे वासं रामपादानुवर्तिनी ।
अनुरुध्यापि सौमित्रे दुःखे विपरिवर्तिनी ॥५॥
5. purāhamāśrame vāsaṃ rāmapādānuvartinī ,
anurudhyāpi saumitre duḥkhe viparivartinī.
5. purā aham āśrame vāsam rāmapādānuvartinī |
anurudhya api saumitre duḥkhe viparivartinī
5. saumitre purā aham āśrame rāmapādānuvartinī
vāsam anurudhya api duḥkhe viparivartinī
5. O Saumitre, though I formerly dwelt in the hermitage, following Rāma's feet, and even after having constantly submitted (to his will), I am (now) enveloped in sorrow (duḥkha).
सा कथं ह्याश्रमे सौम्य वत्स्यामि विजनीकृता ।
आख्यास्यामि च कस्याहं दुःखं दुःखपरायणा ॥६॥
6. sā kathaṃ hyāśrame saumya vatsyāmi vijanīkṛtā ,
ākhyāsyāmi ca kasyāhaṃ duḥkhaṃ duḥkhaparāyaṇā.
6. sā katham hi āśrame saumya vatsyāmi vijanīkṛtā |
ākhyāsyāmi ca kasyāḥ aham duḥkham duḥkhaparāyaṇā
6. saumya sā aham vijanīkṛtā āśrame katham hi vatsyāmi
ca duḥkhaparāyaṇā aham kasyāḥ duḥkham ākhyāsyāmi
6. O gentle one, how indeed shall I, now made solitary, live in this hermitage? And to whom shall I, who am utterly devoted to suffering (duḥkha), narrate my sorrow (duḥkha)?
किं च वक्ष्यामि मुनिषु किं मयापकृतं नृपे ।
कस्मिन् वा कारणे त्यक्ता राघवेण महात्मना ॥७॥
7. kiṃ ca vakṣyāmi muniṣu kiṃ mayāpakṛtaṃ nṛpe ,
kasmin vā kāraṇe tyaktā rāghaveṇa mahātmanā.
7. kim ca vakṣyāmi muniṣu kim mayā apakṛtam nṛpe
kasmin vā kāraṇe tyaktā rāghaveṇa mahātmanā
7. mayā nṛpe kim apakṛtam ca muniṣu kim vakṣyāmi
vā kasmin kāraṇe mahātmanā rāghaveṇa tyaktā
7. And what shall I say to the sages? What wrong have I committed against the king? Or for what reason was I abandoned by the great-souled Rāghava (Rāma)?
न खल्वद्यैव सौमित्रे जीवितं जाह्नवीजले ।
त्यजेयं राजवंशस्तु भर्तुर्मे परिहास्यते ॥८॥
8. na khalvadyaiva saumitre jīvitaṃ jāhnavījale ,
tyajeyaṃ rājavaṃśastu bharturme parihāsyate.
8. na khalu adya eva saumitre jīvitam jāhnavījale
tyajeyam rājavaṃśaḥ tu bhartuḥ me parihāsyate
8. saumitre khalu adya eva jāhnavījale jīvitam na
tyajeyam tu me bhartuḥ rājavaṃśaḥ parihāsyate
8. Indeed, O son of Sumitrā (Lakṣmaṇa), I would certainly not abandon my life in the Gaṅgā's waters today. However, if I were to do so, my husband's royal lineage would be ridiculed.
यथाज्ञां कुरु सौमित्रे त्यज मां दुःखभागिनीम् ।
निदेशे स्थीयतां राज्ञः शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥९॥
9. yathājñāṃ kuru saumitre tyaja māṃ duḥkhabhāginīm ,
nideśe sthīyatāṃ rājñaḥ śṛṇu cedaṃ vaco mama.
9. yathā ājñām kuru saumitre tyaja mām duḥkhabhāginīm
nideśe sthīyatām rājñaḥ śṛṇu ca idam vacaḥ mama
9. saumitre yathā ājñām kuru duḥkhabhāginīm mām tyaja
rājñaḥ nideśe sthīyatām ca mama idam vacaḥ śṛṇu
9. O son of Sumitrā (Lakṣmaṇa), just as commanded, abandon me, who am destined for sorrow. Let the king's directive be obeyed, and listen to these words of mine.
श्वश्रूणामविशेषेण प्राञ्जलिः प्रग्रहेण च ।
शिरसा वन्द्य चरणौ कुशलं ब्रूहि पार्थिवम् ॥१०॥
10. śvaśrūṇāmaviśeṣeṇa prāñjaliḥ pragraheṇa ca ,
śirasā vandya caraṇau kuśalaṃ brūhi pārthivam.
10. śvaśrūṇām aviśeṣeṇa prāñjaliḥ pragraheṇa ca
śirasā vandya caraṇau kuśalam brūhi pārthivam
10. prāñjaliḥ pragraheṇa ca aviśeṣeṇa śvaśrūṇām
śirasā caraṇau vandya pārthivam kuśalam brūhi
10. Convey my respects to all the mothers-in-law without distinction, with folded hands and reverence. Bow your head and venerate their feet, and ask the king about his well-being.
यथा भ्रातृषु वर्तेथास्तथा पौरेषु नित्यदा ।
परमो ह्येष धर्मः स्यादेषा कीर्तिरनुत्तमा ॥११॥
11. yathā bhrātṛṣu vartethāstathā paureṣu nityadā ,
paramo hyeṣa dharmaḥ syādeṣā kīrtiranuttamā.
11. yathā bhrātṛṣu varteṭhāḥ tathā paureṣu nityadā |
paramaḥ hi eṣaḥ dharmaḥ syāt eṣā kīrtiḥ anuttamā
11. yathā bhrātṛṣu varteṭhāḥ tathā nityadā paureṣu
hi eṣaḥ paramaḥ dharmaḥ syāt eṣā anuttamā kīrtiḥ
11. You should always treat your citizens just as you would treat your brothers. For this is indeed the highest natural law (dharma), and this would be supreme glory.
यत्त्वं पौरजनं राजन्धर्मेण समवाप्नुयाः ।
अहं तु नानुशोचामि स्वशरीरं नरर्षभ ।
यथापवादं पौराणां तथैव रघुनन्दन ॥१२॥
12. yattvaṃ paurajanaṃ rājandharmeṇa samavāpnuyāḥ ,
ahaṃ tu nānuśocāmi svaśarīraṃ nararṣabha ,
yathāpavādaṃ paurāṇāṃ tathaiva raghunandana.
12. yat tvam paurajanam rājan dharmeṇa
samavāpnuyāḥ | aham tu na anuśocāmi
svaśarīram nararṣabha | yathā apavādam
paurāṇām tathā eva raghunandana
12. rājan,
yat tvam dharmeṇa paurajanam samavāpnuyāḥ.
tu nararṣabha,
aham svaśarīram na anuśocāmi.
raghunandana,
yathā paurāṇām apavādam tathā eva.
12. O King, may you always govern your citizens in accordance with natural law (dharma). As for myself, O best among men (nararṣabha), I do not grieve for my own body; rather, it is just as the citizens' reproach (apavāda) dictates, O delight of Raghu (raghunandana).
एवं ब्रुवन्त्यां सीतायां लक्ष्मणो दीनचेतनः ।
शिरसा धरणीं गत्वा व्याहर्तुं न शशाक ह ॥१३॥
13. evaṃ bruvantyāṃ sītāyāṃ lakṣmaṇo dīnacetanaḥ ,
śirasā dharaṇīṃ gatvā vyāhartuṃ na śaśāka ha.
13. evam bruvantyām sītāyām lakṣmaṇaḥ dīnacetanaḥ
| śirasā dharaṇīm gatvā vyāhartum na śaśāka ha
13. evam sītāyām bruvantyām,
dīnacetanaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ śirasā dharaṇīm gatvā,
vyāhartum na śaśāka ha.
13. Even as Sītā spoke thus, Lakṣmaṇa, his mind grief-stricken, bowed his head to the ground and was indeed unable to speak.
प्रदक्षिणं च कृत्वा स रुदन्नेव महास्वनम् ।
आरुरोह पुनर्नावं नाविकं चाभ्यचोदयत् ॥१४॥
14. pradakṣiṇaṃ ca kṛtvā sa rudanneva mahāsvanam ,
āruroha punarnāvaṃ nāvikaṃ cābhyacodayat.
14. pradakṣiṇam ca kṛtvā saḥ rudan eva mahāsvanam
| āruroha punaḥ nāvam nāvikam ca abhyacodayat
14. saḥ pradakṣiṇam ca kṛtvā,
mahāsvanam rudan eva,
punaḥ nāvam āruroha,
ca nāvikam abhyacodayat.
14. And having performed a circumambulation, he, weeping loudly, again boarded the boat and urged the boatman on.
स गत्वा चोत्तरं कूलं शोकभारसमन्वितः ।
संमूढ इव दुःखेन रथमध्यारुहद्द्रुतम् ॥१५॥
15. sa gatvā cottaraṃ kūlaṃ śokabhārasamanvitaḥ ,
saṃmūḍha iva duḥkhena rathamadhyāruhaddrutam.
15. sa gatvā ca uttaram kūlam śokabhārasamanvitaḥ
saṃmūḍhaḥ iva duḥkhena ratham adhyāruhat drutam
15. sa śokabhārasamanvitaḥ duḥkhena saṃmūḍhaḥ iva
uttaram kūlam gatvā ca drutam ratham adhyāruhat
15. He went to the northern bank, overwhelmed by a heavy burden of grief. As if bewildered by sorrow, he quickly mounted the chariot.
मुहुर्मुहुरपावृत्य दृष्ट्वा सीतामनाथवत् ।
वेष्टन्तीं परतीरस्थां लक्ष्मणः प्रययावथ ॥१६॥
16. muhurmuhurapāvṛtya dṛṣṭvā sītāmanāthavat ,
veṣṭantīṃ paratīrasthāṃ lakṣmaṇaḥ prayayāvatha.
16. muhuḥ muhuḥ apāvṛtya dṛṣṭvā sītām anāthavat
veṣṭantīm paratīrasthām lakṣmaṇaḥ prayayau atha
16. lakṣmaṇaḥ muhuḥ muhuḥ apāvṛtya paratīrasthām
anāthavat veṣṭantīm sītām dṛṣṭvā atha prayayau
16. Lakṣmaṇa repeatedly turned back, seeing Sītā, helpless and lamenting on the opposite bank. Then he departed.
दूरस्थं रथमालोक्य लक्ष्मणं च मुहुर्मुहुः ।
निरीक्षमाणामुद्विग्नां सीतां शोकः समाविशत् ॥१७॥
17. dūrasthaṃ rathamālokya lakṣmaṇaṃ ca muhurmuhuḥ ,
nirīkṣamāṇāmudvignāṃ sītāṃ śokaḥ samāviśat.
17. dūrastham ratham ālokya lakṣmaṇam ca muhuḥ muhuḥ
nirīkṣamāṇām udvignām sītām śokaḥ samāviśat
17. dūrastham ratham lakṣmaṇam ca ālokya muhuḥ muhuḥ
nirīkṣamāṇām udvignām sītām śokaḥ samāviśat
17. Grief seized Sītā as she anxiously watched the distant chariot and Lakṣmaṇa, gazing at them again and again.
सा दुःखभारावनता तपस्विनी यशोधरा नाथमपश्यती सती ।
रुरोद सा बर्हिणनादिते वने महास्वनं दुःखपरायणा सती ॥१८॥
18. sā duḥkhabhārāvanatā tapasvinī yaśodharā nāthamapaśyatī satī ,
ruroda sā barhiṇanādite vane mahāsvanaṃ duḥkhaparāyaṇā satī.
18. sā duḥkhabhārāvanatā tapasvinī
yaśodharā nātham apaśyatī satī
ruroda sā barhiṇanādite vane
mahāsvanam duḥkhaparāyaṇā satī
18. sā दुःखभारावनता तपस्विनी यशोधरा नाथम् अपश्यती सती
दुःखपरायणा सती बर्हिणनादिते वने महास्वनम् रुरोद
18. That pitiable ascetic (tapasvinī) woman, illustrious and bowed down by the heavy burden of grief, not seeing her protector, wept loudly in the forest, which echoed with the cries of peacocks, utterly consumed by sorrow.
