उपास्य रात्रिशेषं तु शोणाकूले महर्षिभिः ।
निशायां सुप्रभातायां विश्वामित्रो ऽभ्यभाषत ॥१॥

1. After spending the rest of the night with the great sages (maharṣibhiḥ) on the bank of the Śoṇā River, when the night had yielded to a beautiful dawn, Viśvāmitra addressed them.
सुप्रभाता निशा राम पूर्वा संध्या प्रवर्तते ।
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ भद्रं ते गमनायाभिरोचय ॥२॥
2. suprabhātā niśā rāma pūrvā saṃdhyā pravartate ,
uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha bhadraṃ te gamanāyābhirocaya.

2. O Rāma, the night has ended, and the early dawn (sandhyā) is setting in. Arise, arise! May good fortune be upon you; prepare yourself for the journey.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य कृत्वा पौर्वाह्णिकीं क्रियाम् ।
गमनं रोचयामास वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह ॥३॥
3. tacchrutvā vacanaṃ tasya kṛtvā paurvāhṇikīṃ kriyām ,
gamanaṃ rocayāmāsa vākyaṃ cedamuvāca ha.
3. tat śrutvā vacanam tasya kṛtvā paurvāhṇikīm
kriyām gamanam rocayāmāsa vākyam ca idam uvāca ha
3. tasya vacanam śrutvā paurvāhṇikīm kriyām kṛtvā

3. Having heard his words and performed the morning rituals, he then approved of the journey and spoke the following words.
अयं शोणः शुभजलो गाधः पुलिनमण्डितः ।
कतरेण पथा ब्रह्मन् संतरिष्यामहे वयम् ॥४॥
4. ayaṃ śoṇaḥ śubhajalo gādhaḥ pulinamaṇḍitaḥ ,
katareṇa pathā brahman saṃtariṣyāmahe vayam.
4. ayam śoṇaḥ śubhajalaḥ gādhaḥ pulinamaṇḍitaḥ

4. This river Śoṇa has clear and pure waters, is shallow, and is adorned with sandbanks. O venerable one (brahman), by which path shall we cross?
एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण विश्वामित्रो ऽब्रवीदिदम् ।
एष पन्था मयोद्दिष्टो येन यान्ति महर्षयः ॥५॥
5. evamuktastu rāmeṇa viśvāmitro'bravīdidam ,
eṣa panthā mayoddiṣṭo yena yānti maharṣayaḥ.

5. Thus spoken to by Rāma, Viśvāmitra then said this: 'This is the path I have indicated, by which the great sages (maharṣi) always travel.'
ते गत्वा दूरमध्वानं गते ऽर्धदिवसे तदा ।
जाह्नवीं सरितां श्रेष्ठां ददृशुर्मुनिसेविताम् ॥६॥
6. te gatvā dūramadhvānaṃ gate'rdhadivase tadā ,
jāhnavīṃ saritāṃ śreṣṭhāṃ dadṛśurmunisevitām.

jāhnavīm saritām śreṣṭhām dadṛśuḥ munisevitām

6. After traveling a long distance, when half the day had passed, they then saw the Gaṅgā (Jāhnavī), the foremost of rivers, frequented by sages.
तां दृष्ट्वा पुण्यसलिलां हंससारससेविताम् ।
बभूवुर्मुदिताः सर्वे मुनयः सहराघवाः ।
तस्यास्तीरे ततश्चक्रुस्ते आवासपरिग्रहम् ॥७॥
7. tāṃ dṛṣṭvā puṇyasalilāṃ haṃsasārasasevitām ,
babhūvurmuditāḥ sarve munayaḥ saharāghavāḥ ,
tasyāstīre tataścakruste āvāsaparigraham.

haṃsasārasasevitām babhūvuḥ muditāḥ sarve

7. Seeing that sacred-watered river (Jāhnavī), frequented by swans and cranes, all the sages, along with the Raghus, became delighted. Then, on her bank, they established their dwelling.
ततः स्नात्वा यथान्यायं संतर्प्य पितृदेवताः ।
हुत्वा चैवाग्निहोत्राणि प्राश्य चामृतवद्धविः ॥८॥
8. tataḥ snātvā yathānyāyaṃ saṃtarpya pitṛdevatāḥ ,
hutvā caivāgnihotrāṇi prāśya cāmṛtavaddhaviḥ.
8. tataḥ snātvā yathānyāyam saṃtarpya pitṛdevatāḥ
hutvā ca eva agnihotrāṇi prāśya ca amṛtavat haviḥ

8. Then, having bathed according to the proper procedure, having satisfied the ancestors and deities with offerings, and having performed the fire sacrifices (agnihotra), they then partook of the sacrificial food (haviḥ) as if it were nectar.
विविशुर्जाह्नवीतीरे शुचौ मुदितमानसाः ।
विश्वामित्रं महात्मानं परिवार्य समन्ततः ॥९॥
9. viviśurjāhnavītīre śucau muditamānasāḥ ,
viśvāmitraṃ mahātmānaṃ parivārya samantataḥ.
9. viviśuḥ jāhnavītīre śucau muditamānasāḥ
viśvāmitram mahātmānam parivārya samantataḥ
9. muditamānasāḥ te viśvāmitram mahātmānam

9. With delighted minds, they entered the pure bank of the Gaṅgā (Jāhnavī), having surrounded the great-souled Viśvāmitra on all sides.
संप्रहृष्टमना रामो विश्वामित्रमथाब्रवीत् ।
भगवञ् श्रोतुमिच्छामि गङ्गां त्रिपथगां नदीम् ।
त्रैलोक्यं कथमाक्रम्य गता नदनदीपतिम् ॥१०॥
10. saṃprahṛṣṭamanā rāmo viśvāmitramathābravīt ,
bhagavañ śrotumicchāmi gaṅgāṃ tripathagāṃ nadīm ,
trailokyaṃ kathamākramya gatā nadanadīpatim.
10. saṃprahr̥ṣṭamanāḥ rāmaḥ viśvāmitram
atha abravīt bhagavan śrotum icchāmi
gaṅgām tripathagām nadīm trailokyam
katham ākramya gatā nadanadīpatim

10. With a greatly delighted mind, Rāma then said to Viśvāmitra: 'O venerable one, I wish to hear about the river Gaṅgā, the one who flows through three paths. How did she, after encompassing the three worlds, reach the lord of rivers (the ocean)?'
चोदितो राम वाक्येन विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
वृद्धिं जन्म च गङ्गाया वक्तुमेवोपचक्रमे ॥११॥
11. codito rāma vākyena viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ ,
vṛddhiṃ janma ca gaṅgāyā vaktumevopacakrame.
11. coditaḥ rāma vākyena viśvāmitraḥ mahāmuniḥ
vr̥ddhim janma ca gaṅgāyāḥ vaktum eva upacakrame
11. rāma vākyena coditaḥ mahāmuniḥ viśvāmitraḥ ca

11. Prompted by Rāma's question, the great sage Viśvāmitra then began to narrate the growth and birth of Gaṅgā.
शैलेन्द्रो हिमवान्नाम धातूनामाकरो महान् ।
तस्य कन्या द्वयं राम रूपेणाप्रतिमं भुवि ॥१२॥
12. śailendro himavānnāma dhātūnāmākaro mahān ,
tasya kanyā dvayaṃ rāma rūpeṇāpratimaṃ bhuvi.
12. śailendraḥ himavān nāma dhātūnām ākaraḥ mahān
tasya kanyā dvayam rāma rūpeṇa apratimam bhuvi
12. himavān nāma śailendraḥ mahān dhātūnām ākaraḥ [asti]
rāma tasya bhuvi rūpeṇa apratimam kanyā dvayam [āsīt]
12. There is a great king of mountains named Himavān, who is a vast repository of minerals. O Rāma, he has two daughters whose beauty is unparalleled on earth.
या मेरुदुहिता राम तयोर्माता सुमध्यमा ।
नाम्ना मेना मनोज्ञा वै पत्नी हिमवतः प्रिया ॥१३॥
13. yā meruduhitā rāma tayormātā sumadhyamā ,
nāmnā menā manojñā vai patnī himavataḥ priyā.

nāmnā menā manojñā vai patnī himavataḥ priyā
13. rāma,
yā meruduhitā tayoḥ sumadhyamā mātā [sā] nāmnā menā,
manojñā vai,

13. O Rāma, their mother, the slender-waisted one, is the daughter of Meru. Her name is Menā, delightful, and she is the beloved wife of Himavān.
तस्यां गङ्गेयमभवज्ज्येष्ठा हिमवतः सुता ।
उमा नाम द्वितीयाभूत् कन्या तस्यैव राघव ॥१४॥
14. tasyāṃ gaṅgeyamabhavajjyeṣṭhā himavataḥ sutā ,
umā nāma dvitīyābhūt kanyā tasyaiva rāghava.
14. tasyām gaṅgā iyam abhavat jyeṣṭhā himavataḥ sutā
umā nāma dvitīyā abhūt kanyā tasya eva rāghava
14. rāghava tasyām himavataḥ jyeṣṭhā sutā iyam gaṅgā
abhavat tasya eva dvitīyā kanyā umā nāma abhūt
14. From her (Menakā), Gaṅgā was born, the eldest daughter of Himavat. A second daughter, named Umā, was also born from him, O Rāghava.
अथ ज्येष्ठां सुराः सर्वे देवतार्थचिकीर्षया ।
शैलेन्द्रं वरयामासुर्गङ्गां त्रिपथगां नदीम् ॥१५॥
15. atha jyeṣṭhāṃ surāḥ sarve devatārthacikīrṣayā ,
śailendraṃ varayāmāsurgaṅgāṃ tripathagāṃ nadīm.
15. atha jyeṣṭhām surāḥ sarve devatārthacikīrṣayā
śaila-indram varayāmāsuḥ gaṅgām tripathagām nadīm
15. atha sarve surāḥ devatārthacikīrṣayā śailendram
jyeṣṭhām tripathagām gaṅgām nadīm varayāmāsuḥ
15. Then all the gods, desiring to accomplish the divine purpose, sought (in marriage) from the lord of mountains (Himavat) Gaṅgā, the three-pathed river.
ददौ धर्मेण हिमवांस्तनयां लोकपावनीम् ।
स्वच्छन्दपथगां गङ्गां त्रैलोक्यहितकाम्यया ॥१६॥
16. dadau dharmeṇa himavāṃstanayāṃ lokapāvanīm ,
svacchandapathagāṃ gaṅgāṃ trailokyahitakāmyayā.

svacchandapathagām gaṅgām trailokyahitakāmyayā

16. Himavat, in accordance with the intrinsic nature (dharma) of things, gave his daughter, Gaṅgā, the purifier of worlds and one who flows as she pleases, out of a desire for the welfare of the three worlds.
प्रतिगृह्य त्रिलोकार्थं त्रिलोकहितकारिणः ।
गङ्गामादाय ते ऽगच्छन् कृतार्थेनान्तरात्मना ॥१७॥
17. pratigṛhya trilokārthaṃ trilokahitakāriṇaḥ ,
gaṅgāmādāya te'gacchan kṛtārthenāntarātmanā.
17. pratigṛhya triloka-artham trilokahitakāriṇaḥ
gaṅgām ādāya te agacchan kṛtārthena antarātmanā
17. trilokahitakāriṇaḥ trilokārtham pratigṛhya
gaṅgām ādāya te kṛtārthena antarātmanā agacchan
17. Having accepted Gaṅgā for the purpose of the three worlds, those benefactors of the three worlds (the gods), taking Gaṅgā, departed with their inner self (antarātman) satisfied.
या चान्या शैलदुहिता कन्यासीद् रघुनन्दन ।
उग्रं सा व्रतमास्थाय तपस्तेपे तपोधना ॥१८॥
18. yā cānyā śailaduhitā kanyāsīd raghunandana ,
ugraṃ sā vratamāsthāya tapastepe tapodhanā.
18. yā ca anyā śailaduhitā kanyā āsīt raghunandana
ugram sā vratam āsthāya tapaḥ tepe tapodhanā
18. raghunandana yā ca anyā śailaduhitā kanyā āsīt
sā ugram vratam āsthāya tapodhanā tapaḥ tepe
18. And that other daughter of the mountain, a maiden, O Rama, she, adopting a severe vow, performed intense penance (tapas), an ascetic whose wealth was austerity.
उग्रेण तपसा युक्तां ददौ शैलवरः सुताम् ।
रुद्रायाप्रतिरूपाय उमां लोकनमस्कृताम् ॥१९॥
19. ugreṇa tapasā yuktāṃ dadau śailavaraḥ sutām ,
rudrāyāpratirūpāya umāṃ lokanamaskṛtām.

rudrāya apratirūpāya umām lokanamaskṛtām
19. śailavaraḥ ugreṇa tapasā yuktām lokanamaskṛtām

19. The best of mountains (Himavan) gave his daughter Uma, who was endowed with intense penance (tapas) and revered by the worlds, to Rudra, the unrivaled one.
एते ते शैल राजस्य सुते लोकनमस्कृते ।
गङ्गा च सरितां श्रेष्ठा उमा देवी च राघव ॥२०॥
20. ete te śaila rājasya sute lokanamaskṛte ,
gaṅgā ca saritāṃ śreṣṭhā umā devī ca rāghava.
20. ete te śaila rājasya sute lokanamaskṛte
gaṅgā ca saritām śreṣṭhā umā devī ca rāghava
20. rāghava ete lokanamaskṛte te śaila rājasya
sute gaṅgā ca saritām śreṣṭhā ca umā devī
20. O Rama, these two revered by the worlds are the two daughters of the mountain king: Ganga, the foremost of rivers, and Devi Uma.
एतत्ते धर्ममाख्यातं यथा त्रिपथगा नदी ।
खं गता प्रथमं तात गतिं गतिमतां वर ॥२१॥
21. etatte dharmamākhyātaṃ yathā tripathagā nadī ,
khaṃ gatā prathamaṃ tāta gatiṃ gatimatāṃ vara.
21. etat te dharmam ākhyātam yathā tripathagā nadī
kham gatā prathamam tāta gatim gatimatām vara
21. tāta gatimatām vara te etat dharmam ākhyātam
yathā tripathagā nadī prathamam kham gatim gatā
21. This natural law (dharma) has been explained to you, dear one, how the three-pathed river (Ganga) first went to the sky, O best among those who move.
