तत्रोपविष्टं राजानमुपासन्ते विचक्षणाः ।

1. Wise persons and humorists from all around attend the king seated there, narrating diverse stories.

2. vijayo madhumattaśca kāśyapaḥ piṅgalaḥ kuśaḥ ,
surājiḥ kāliyo bhadro dantavakraḥ samāgadhaḥ.

2. Vijaya, Madhumatta, Kāśyapa, Piṅgala, Kuśa, Surāji, Kāliya, Bhadra, Dantavakra, and Samāgadha (were among them).
एते कथा बहुविधा परिहाससमन्विताः ।
कथयन्ति स्म संहृष्टा राघवस्य महात्मनः ॥३॥
3. ete kathā bahuvidhā parihāsasamanvitāḥ ,
kathayanti sma saṃhṛṣṭā rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ.

3. These (individuals), greatly delighted, used to narrate various humorous stories concerning the great-souled (mahātman) Rāghava.
ततः कथायां कस्यां चिद् राघवः समभाषत ।
काः कथा नगरे भद्र वर्तन्ते विषयेषु च ॥४॥
4. tataḥ kathāyāṃ kasyāṃ cid rāghavaḥ samabhāṣata ,
kāḥ kathā nagare bhadra vartante viṣayeṣu ca.

4. Then, during one of the stories, Rāghava said, "O venerable one, what stories are circulating in the city and its surrounding regions?"
मामाश्रितानि कान्याहुः पौरजानपदा जनाः ।
किं च सीतां समाश्रित्य भरतं किं नु लक्ष्मणम् ॥५॥
5. māmāśritāni kānyāhuḥ paurajānapadā janāḥ ,
kiṃ ca sītāṃ samāśritya bharataṃ kiṃ nu lakṣmaṇam.
5. mām āśritāni kāni āhuḥ paurajānapadā janāḥ / kim
ca sītām samāśritya bharatam kim nu lakṣmaṇam

5. What do the citizens and rural folk say about matters concerning me? And what do they say regarding Sītā, or Bharata, or Lakṣmaṇa?
किं नु शत्रुघ्नमाश्रित्य कैकेयीं मातरं च मे ।
वक्तव्यतां च राजानो नवे राज्ये व्रजन्ति हि ॥६॥
6. kiṃ nu śatrughnamāśritya kaikeyīṃ mātaraṃ ca me ,
vaktavyatāṃ ca rājāno nave rājye vrajanti hi.
6. kim nu śatrughnam āśritya kaikeyīm mātaram ca me
/ vaktavyatām ca rājānaḥ nave rājye vrajanti hi
6. kim nu śatrughnam āśritya kaikeyīm mātaram ca me

6. Or concerning Śatrughna, and my mother Kaikeyī? Indeed, royal family members incur criticism in a new kingdom.
एवमुक्ते तु रामेण भद्रः प्राञ्जलिरब्रवीत् ।
स्थिताः कथाः शुभा राजन् वर्तन्ते पुरवासिनाम् ॥७॥
7. evamukte tu rāmeṇa bhadraḥ prāñjalirabravīt ,
sthitāḥ kathāḥ śubhā rājan vartante puravāsinām.

sthitāḥ kathāḥ śubhāḥ rājan vartante puravāsinām

7. When Rāma had spoken thus, Bhadra, with folded hands, said: 'O King, auspicious stories are current among the city dwellers.'
अयं तु विजयः सौम्य दशग्रीववधाश्रितः ।
भूयिष्ठं स्वपुरे पौरैः कथ्यते पुरुषर्षभ ॥८॥
8. ayaṃ tu vijayaḥ saumya daśagrīvavadhāśritaḥ ,
bhūyiṣṭhaṃ svapure pauraiḥ kathyate puruṣarṣabha.
8. ayam tu vijayaḥ saumya daśagrīvavadhāśritaḥ /
bhūyiṣṭham svapure pauraiḥ kathyate puruṣarṣabha
8. saumya puruṣarṣabha ayam tu daśagrīvavadhāśritaḥ

8. O gentle one, this victory, which is based on the slaying of Daśagrīva, is mostly recounted by the city dwellers in our own city, O best of men.
एवमुक्तस्तु भद्रेण राघवो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
कथयस्व यथातथ्यं सर्वं निरवशेषतः ॥९॥
9. evamuktastu bhadreṇa rāghavo vākyamabravīt ,
kathayasva yathātathyaṃ sarvaṃ niravaśeṣataḥ.
9. evam uktaḥ tu bhadreṇa rāghavaḥ vākyam abravīt
kathayasva yathātathyam sarvam niravaśeṣataḥ

9. Addressed thus by Bhadra, Rama (rāghava) spoke these words: 'Please tell me everything truthfully and completely, without holding anything back.'
शुभाशुभानि वाक्यानि यान्याहुः पुरवासिनः ।
श्रुत्वेदानीं शुभं कुर्यां न कुर्यामशुभानि च ॥१०॥
10. śubhāśubhāni vākyāni yānyāhuḥ puravāsinaḥ ,
śrutvedānīṃ śubhaṃ kuryāṃ na kuryāmaśubhāni ca.
10. śubhāśubhāni vākyāni yāni āhuḥ puravāsinaḥ śrutvā
idānīm śubham kuryām na kuryām aśubhāni ca
10. puravāsinaḥ yāni śubhāśubhāni vākyāni āhuḥ (tāni)
śrutvā idānīm śubham kuryām ca aśubhāni na kuryām
10. I will perform auspicious deeds now and avoid inauspicious ones, after hearing the good and bad statements made by the city dwellers.
कथयस्व च विस्रब्धो निर्भयो विगतज्वरः ।
कथयन्ते यथा पौरा जना जनपदेषु च ॥११॥
11. kathayasva ca visrabdho nirbhayo vigatajvaraḥ ,
kathayante yathā paurā janā janapadeṣu ca.
11. kathayasva ca visrabdhaḥ nirbhayaḥ vigatajvaraḥ
kathayante yathā paurā janā janapadeṣu ca
11. ca visrabdhaḥ nirbhayaḥ vigatajvaraḥ kathayasva
yathā paurā ca janapadeṣu janā kathayante
11. And speak confidently, fearlessly, and without anxiety, just as the citizens and people in the rural areas speak.
राघवेणैवमुक्तस्तु भद्रः सुरुचिरं वचः ।
प्रत्युवाच महाबाहुं प्राञ्जलिः सुसमाहितः ॥१२॥
12. rāghaveṇaivamuktastu bhadraḥ suruciraṃ vacaḥ ,
pratyuvāca mahābāhuṃ prāñjaliḥ susamāhitaḥ.
12. rāghaveṇa evam uktaḥ tu bhadraḥ suruciram vacaḥ
prati-uvāca mahābāhum prāñjaliḥ susamāhitaḥ
12. rāghaveṇa evam uktaḥ tu bhadraḥ prāñjaliḥ
susamāhitaḥ mahābāhum suruciram vacaḥ pratyuvāca
12. Addressed thus by Rama (rāghava), Bhadra, with folded hands and great composure, replied with very charming words to the great-armed one.
शृणु राजन्यथा पौराः कथयन्ति शुभाशुभम् ।
चत्वरापणरथ्यासु वनेषूपवनेषु च ॥१३॥
13. śṛṇu rājanyathā paurāḥ kathayanti śubhāśubham ,
catvarāpaṇarathyāsu vaneṣūpavaneṣu ca.
13. śṛṇu rājan yathā paurāḥ kathayanti śubhāśubham
catvarāpaṇarathyāsu vaneṣu upavaneṣu ca
13. rājan śṛṇu yathā paurāḥ catvarāpaṇarathyāsu
vaneṣu upavaneṣu ca śubhāśubham kathayanti
13. Listen, O king, to what the citizens are saying, both good and bad, in the town squares, market places, and streets, as well as in the forests and gardens.
दुष्करं कृतवान् रामः समुद्रे सेतुबन्धनम् ।
अकृतं पूर्वकैः कैश्चिद्देवैरपि सदानवैः ॥१४॥
14. duṣkaraṃ kṛtavān rāmaḥ samudre setubandhanam ,
akṛtaṃ pūrvakaiḥ kaiściddevairapi sadānavaiḥ.
14. duṣkaram kṛtavān rāmaḥ samudre setubandhanam
akṛtam pūrvakaiḥ kaiścit devaiḥ api sadānavaiḥ
14. rāmaḥ samudre duṣkaram setubandhanam kṛtavān
akṛtam pūrvakaiḥ kaiścit devaiḥ api sadānavaiḥ
14. Rama accomplished the extremely difficult task of constructing a bridge across the ocean. This feat had never been achieved before by any predecessors, not even by the gods along with the demons.
रावणश्च दुराधर्षो हतः सबलवाहनः ।
वानराश्च वशं नीता ऋक्षाश्च सह राक्षसैः ॥१५॥
15. rāvaṇaśca durādharṣo hataḥ sabalavāhanaḥ ,
vānarāśca vaśaṃ nītā ṛkṣāśca saha rākṣasaiḥ.
15. rāvaṇaḥ ca durādharṣaḥ hataḥ sabalavāhanaḥ
vānarāḥ ca vaśam nītāḥ ṛkṣāḥ ca saha rākṣasaiḥ
15. durādharṣaḥ rāvaṇaḥ ca sabalavāhanaḥ hataḥ
vānarāḥ ca ṛkṣāḥ ca rākṣasaiḥ saha vaśam nītāḥ
15. The formidable Ravana was slain along with his army and conveyances. The Vanaras (monkeys) and Ṛkṣas (bears) were brought under control, as were the (rākṣasas) demons themselves.
हत्वा च रावणं युद्धे सीतामाहृत्य राघवः ।
अमर्षं पृष्ठतः कृत्वा स्ववेश्म पुनरानयत् ॥१६॥
16. hatvā ca rāvaṇaṃ yuddhe sītāmāhṛtya rāghavaḥ ,
amarṣaṃ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā svaveśma punarānayat.
16. hatvā ca rāvaṇam yuddhe sītām āhṛtya rāghavaḥ
amarṣam pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā svaveśma punaḥ ānayat
16. rāghavaḥ yuddhe rāvaṇam hatvā ca sītām āhṛtya
amarṣam pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā punaḥ svaveśma ānayat
16. After killing Ravana in battle and rescuing Sita, Rama set aside his anger and brought her back to his own dwelling.
कीदृशं हृदये तस्य सीतासंभोगजं सुखम् ।
अङ्कमारोप्य हि पुरा रावणेन बलाद्धृताम् ॥१७॥
17. kīdṛśaṃ hṛdaye tasya sītāsaṃbhogajaṃ sukham ,
aṅkamāropya hi purā rāvaṇena balāddhṛtām.
17. kīdṛśam hṛdaye tasya sītāsaṃbhogajam sukham
aṅkam āropya hi purā rāvaṇena balāt dhṛtām
17. tasya hṛdaye sītāsaṃbhogajam sukham kīdṛśam

17. What kind of joy (sukha) can be in his heart, arising from union with Sita, who was indeed formerly forcibly abducted by Ravana after he had placed her on his lap?
लङ्कामपि पुनर्नीतामशोकवनिकां गताम् ।
रक्षसां वशमापन्नां कथं रामो न कुत्सते ॥१८॥
18. laṅkāmapi punarnītāmaśokavanikāṃ gatām ,
rakṣasāṃ vaśamāpannāṃ kathaṃ rāmo na kutsate.
18. laṅkām api punaḥ nītām aśokavanikām gatām
rakṣasām vaśam āpannām katham rāmaḥ na kutsate
18. rāmaḥ katham na kutsate laṅkām api punaḥ nītām
aśokavanikām gatām rakṣasām vaśam āpannām
18. How is it that Rama does not condemn (Sita), even though she was taken back to Laṅkā, resided in the Aśoka garden, and had fallen under the control of the rākṣasas?
अस्माकमपि दारेषु सहनीयं भविष्यति ।
यथा हि कुरुते राजा प्रजा तमनुवर्तते ॥१९॥
19. asmākamapi dāreṣu sahanīyaṃ bhaviṣyati ,
yathā hi kurute rājā prajā tamanuvartate.
19. asmākam api dāreṣu sahanīyam bhaviṣyati
yathā hi kurute rājā prajā tam anuvartate
19. sahanīyam bhaviṣyati asmākam api dāreṣu
hi yathā rājā kurute prajā tam anuvartate
19. Even among us, concerning our own wives, it will become something to be endured. For, just as the king acts, so do the people follow him.
एवं बहुविधा वाचो वदन्ति पुरवासिनः ।
नगरेषु च सर्वेषु राजञ्जनपदेषु च ॥२०॥
20. evaṃ bahuvidhā vāco vadanti puravāsinaḥ ,
nagareṣu ca sarveṣu rājañjanapadeṣu ca.
20. evam bahuvidhāḥ vācaḥ vadanti puravāsinaḥ
nagareṣu ca sarveṣu rājan janapadeṣu ca
20. rājan puravāsinaḥ evam bahuvidhāḥ vācaḥ
vadanti ca sarveṣu nagareṣu ca janapadeṣu
20. Thus, the city dwellers utter various words (such as these). And, O King, in all cities and in all regions (janapadas) these words are spoken.
तस्यैतद्भाषितं श्रुत्वा राघवः परमार्तवत् ।
उवाच सर्वान् सुहृदः कथमेतन्निवेद्यताम् ॥२१॥
21. tasyaitadbhāṣitaṃ śrutvā rāghavaḥ paramārtavat ,
uvāca sarvān suhṛdaḥ kathametannivedyatām.
21. tasya etat bhāṣitam śrutvā rāghavaḥ parama-ārtavat
uvāca sarvān suhṛdaḥ katham etat nivedyatām
21. rāghavaḥ tasya etat bhāṣitam śrutvā parama-ārtavat
sarvān suhṛdaḥ uvāca etat katham nivedyatām
21. Having heard these words of his, Rāghava, appearing extremely distressed, asked all his friends, "How should this be reported?"
सर्वे तु शिरसा भूमावभिवाद्य प्रणम्य च ।
प्रत्यूचू राघवं दीनमेवमेतन्न संशयः ॥२२॥
22. sarve tu śirasā bhūmāvabhivādya praṇamya ca ,
pratyūcū rāghavaṃ dīnamevametanna saṃśayaḥ.
22. sarve tu śirasā bhūmau abhivādya praṇamya ca
pratyūcuḥ rāghavam dīnam evam etat na saṃśayaḥ
22. tu sarve śirasā bhūmau abhivādya ca praṇamya
dīnam rāghavam pratyūcuḥ evam etat saṃśayaḥ na
22. However, all of them, having saluted and prostrated with their heads to the ground, replied to the distressed Rāghava, "This is certainly true; there is no doubt."
श्रुत्वा तु वाक्यं काकुत्स्थः सर्वेषां समुदीरितम् ।
विसर्जयामास तदा सर्वांस्ताञ् शत्रुतापनः ॥२३॥
23. śrutvā tu vākyaṃ kākutsthaḥ sarveṣāṃ samudīritam ,
visarjayāmāsa tadā sarvāṃstāñ śatrutāpanaḥ.
23. śrutvā tu vākyam kākutsthaḥ sarveṣām sam-udīritam
visarjayāmāsa tadā sarvān tān śatru-tāpanaḥ
23. tadā kākutsthaḥ śatru-tāpanaḥ tu sarveṣām

23. Then, Kākutstha, the subduer of foes, having heard the words spoken by all of them, dismissed them all.
