अथ रामः प्रसन्नात्मा श्रुत्वा वायुसुतस्य ह ।
प्रत्यभाषत दुर्धर्षः श्रुतवानात्मनि स्थितम् ॥१॥
1. atha rāmaḥ prasannātmā śrutvā vāyusutasya ha ,
pratyabhāṣata durdharṣaḥ śrutavānātmani sthitam.

1. Then, the unconquerable Rāma, his mind pleased, having heard the son of Vayu (Hanuman) indeed replied. He was learned and firm in his own nature (ātman).
ममापि तु विवक्षास्ति का चित् प्रति विभीषणम् ।
श्रुतमिच्छामि तत् सर्वं भवद्भिः श्रेयसि स्थितैः ॥२॥
2. mamāpi tu vivakṣāsti kā cit prati vibhīṣaṇam ,
śrutamicchāmi tat sarvaṃ bhavadbhiḥ śreyasi sthitaiḥ.
2. mama api tu vivakṣā asti kā cit prati vibhīṣaṇam
śrutam icchāmi tat sarvam bhavadbhiḥ śreyasi sthitaiḥ
2. Indeed, I also have something to say regarding Vibhīṣaṇa. I wish all of it to be heard by you, who are established in what is auspicious.
मित्रभावेन संप्राप्तं न त्यजेयं कथं चन ।
दोषो यद्यपि तस्य स्यात् सतामेतदगर्हितम् ॥३॥
3. mitrabhāvena saṃprāptaṃ na tyajeyaṃ kathaṃ cana ,
doṣo yadyapi tasya syāt satāmetadagarhitam.
3. mitrabhāvena samprāptam na tyajeyam katham cana
doṣaḥ yadi api tasya syāt satām etat agarhitam
3. One who has approached with a friendly disposition, I should not abandon him under any circumstances. Even if a fault were to exist in him, this is not condemned by the virtuous.
रामस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवः प्लवगेश्वरः ।
प्रत्यभाषत काकुत्स्थं सौहार्देनाभिचोदितः ॥४॥
4. rāmasya vacanaṃ śrutvā sugrīvaḥ plavageśvaraḥ ,
pratyabhāṣata kākutsthaṃ sauhārdenābhicoditaḥ.

4. Having heard Rāma's words, Sugrīva, the lord of monkeys, spoke in reply to Kākuṛstha (Rāma), prompted by affection.
किमत्र चित्रं धर्मज्ञ लोकनाथशिखामणे ।
यत्त्वमार्यं प्रभाषेथाः सत्त्ववान् सपथे स्थितः ॥५॥
5. kimatra citraṃ dharmajña lokanāthaśikhāmaṇe ,
yattvamāryaṃ prabhāṣethāḥ sattvavān sapathe sthitaḥ.
5. kim atra citram dharmajña lokanāthaśikhāmaṇe yat
tvam āryam prabhāṣethāḥ sattvavān sapathe sthitaḥ
5. dharmajña lokanāthaśikhāmaṇe atra kim citram yat
tvam sattvavān sapathe sthitaḥ āryam prabhāṣethāḥ
5. What is surprising in this, O knower of natural law (dharma), O foremost among the protectors of the world, that you, being valorous and established on the path of truth, would utter such noble words?
मम चाप्यन्तरात्मायं शुद्धिं वेत्ति विभीषणम् ।
अनुमनाच्च भावाच्च सर्वतः सुपरीक्षितः ॥६॥
6. mama cāpyantarātmāyaṃ śuddhiṃ vetti vibhīṣaṇam ,
anumanācca bhāvācca sarvataḥ suparīkṣitaḥ.
6. mama ca api antarātman ayam śuddhim vetti vibhīṣaṇam
anumanāt ca bhāvāt ca sarvataḥ suparīkṣitaḥ
6. mama antarātman ayam api vibhīṣaṇam śuddhim
vetti anumanāt ca bhāvāt ca sarvataḥ suparīkṣitaḥ
6. My inner self (antarātman) also knows Vibhīṣaṇa to be pure. He has been thoroughly examined from all angles, both by inference and by his disposition.
तस्मात् क्षिप्रं सहास्माभिस्तुल्यो भवतु राघव ।
विभीषणो महाप्राज्ञः सखित्वं चाभ्युपैतु नः ॥७॥
7. tasmāt kṣipraṃ sahāsmābhistulyo bhavatu rāghava ,
vibhīṣaṇo mahāprājñaḥ sakhitvaṃ cābhyupaitu naḥ.
7. tasmāt kṣipram saha asmābhiḥ tulyaḥ bhavatu rāghava
vibhīṣaṇaḥ mahāprājñaḥ sakhitvam ca abhyupaitu naḥ
7. tasmāt rāghava kṣipram vibhīṣaṇaḥ mahāprājñaḥ asmābhiḥ
saha tulyaḥ bhavatu ca naḥ sakhitvam abhyupaitu
7. Therefore, O Rāghava, let that greatly wise Vibhīṣaṇa quickly become equal to us and accept our friendship.
स सुग्रीवस्य तद्वाक्यं रामः श्रुत्वा विमृश्य च ।
ततः शुभतरं वाक्यमुवाच हरिपुंगवम् ॥८॥
8. sa sugrīvasya tadvākyaṃ rāmaḥ śrutvā vimṛśya ca ,
tataḥ śubhataraṃ vākyamuvāca haripuṃgavam.
8. sa sugrīvasya tat vākyam rāmaḥ śrutvā vimṛśya
ca tataḥ śubhataram vākyam uvāca haripuṅgavam
8. Having heard and carefully considered Sugrīva's words, Rāma then spoke a more auspicious statement to the foremost of monkeys.
सुदुष्टो वाप्यदुष्टो वा किमेष रजनीचरः ।
सूक्ष्ममप्यहितं कर्तुं ममाशक्तः कथं चन ॥९॥
9. suduṣṭo vāpyaduṣṭo vā kimeṣa rajanīcaraḥ ,
sūkṣmamapyahitaṃ kartuṃ mamāśaktaḥ kathaṃ cana.
9. suduṣṭaḥ vā api aduṣṭaḥ vā kim eṣaḥ rajānīcaraḥ
sūkṣmam api ahitam kartum mama aśaktaḥ kathaṃ cana
9. Whether this night-wanderer (rākṣasa) is very wicked or not wicked, he is certainly incapable of inflicting even the slightest harm upon me.
पिशाचान्दानवान्यक्षान्पृथिव्यां चैव राक्षसान् ।
अङ्गुल्यग्रेण तान् हन्यामिच्छन् हरिगणेश्वर ॥१०॥
10. piśācāndānavānyakṣānpṛthivyāṃ caiva rākṣasān ,
aṅgulyagreṇa tān hanyāmicchan harigaṇeśvara.
10. piśācān dānavān yakṣān pṛthivyām ca eva rākṣasān
aṅgulyagreṇa tān hanyām icchan harigaṇeśvara
10. O lord of the monkey hosts, should I wish, I could kill those Piśācas, Dānavas, Yakṣas, and even the Rākṣasas on earth, merely with the tip of my finger.
श्रूयते हि कपोतेन शत्रुः शरणमागतः ।
अर्चितश्च यथान्यायं स्वैश्च मांसैर्निमन्त्रितः ॥११॥
11. śrūyate hi kapotena śatruḥ śaraṇamāgataḥ ,
arcitaśca yathānyāyaṃ svaiśca māṃsairnimantritaḥ.
11. śrūyate hi kapotena śatruḥ śaraṇam āgataḥ arcitaḥ
ca yathānyāyam svaiḥ ca māṃsaiḥ nimantritaḥ
11. Indeed, it is recounted that a pigeon, when an enemy sought refuge, honored that enemy properly and even offered its own flesh.
स हि तं प्रतिजग्राह भार्या हर्तारमागतम् ।
कपोतो वानरश्रेष्ठ किं पुनर्मद्विधो जनः ॥१२॥
12. sa hi taṃ pratijagrāha bhāryā hartāramāgatam ,
kapoto vānaraśreṣṭha kiṃ punarmadvidho janaḥ.
12. saḥ hi tam pratijagrāha bhāryāhartāram āgatam |
kapotaḥ vānaraśreṣṭha kim punaḥ matvidhaḥ janaḥ
12. Indeed, a pigeon welcomed him who had arrived as the abductor of his wife, O best of monkeys. What then of a person like me?
ऋषेः कण्वस्य पुत्रेण कण्डुना परमर्षिणा ।
शृणु गाथां पुरा गीतां धर्मिष्ठां सत्यवादिना ॥१३॥
13. ṛṣeḥ kaṇvasya putreṇa kaṇḍunā paramarṣiṇā ,
śṛṇu gāthāṃ purā gītāṃ dharmiṣṭhāṃ satyavādinā.
13. ṛṣeḥ kaṇvasya putreṇa kaṇḍunā paramarṣiṇā |
śṛṇu gāthām purā gītām dharmiṣṭhām satyavādinā
13. Listen to an ancient verse, most righteous (dharma), which was sung by the truthful great sage Kaṇḍu, son of the sage Kaṇva.
बद्धाञ्जलिपुटं दीनं याचन्तं शरणागतम् ।
न हन्यादानृशंस्यार्थमपि शत्रुं परं पत ॥१४॥
14. baddhāñjalipuṭaṃ dīnaṃ yācantaṃ śaraṇāgatam ,
na hanyādānṛśaṃsyārthamapi śatruṃ paraṃ pata.
14. baddhāñjalipuṭam dīnam yācantam śaraṇāgatam |
na hanyāt ānṛśaṃsyārtham api śatrum param pata
14. O king, one should not kill even a supreme enemy who has clasped his hands in supplication, who is helpless, begging, and has sought refuge; this should be done for the sake of compassion.
आर्तो वा यदि वा दृप्तः परेषां शरणं गतः ।
अरिः प्राणान्परित्यज्य रक्षितव्यः कृतात्मना ॥१५॥
15. ārto vā yadi vā dṛptaḥ pareṣāṃ śaraṇaṃ gataḥ ,
ariḥ prāṇānparityajya rakṣitavyaḥ kṛtātmanā.
15. ārtaḥ vā yadi vā dṛptaḥ pareṣām śaraṇam gataḥ
| ariḥ prāṇān parityajya rakṣitavyaḥ kṛtātmanā
15. Whether distressed or arrogant, an enemy who has sought refuge with others must be protected by one who has disciplined their self (ātman), even if it means abandoning one's own life.
स चेद्भयाद्वा मोहाद्वा कामाद्वापि न रक्षति ।
स्वया शक्त्या यथातत्त्वं तत् पापं लोकगर्हितम् ॥१६॥
16. sa cedbhayādvā mohādvā kāmādvāpi na rakṣati ,
svayā śaktyā yathātattvaṃ tat pāpaṃ lokagarhitam.
16. sa cet bhayāt vā mohāt vā kāmāt vā api na rakṣati
| svayā śaktyā yathātattvam tat pāpam lokagarhitam
16. sa cet bhayāt vā mohāt vā kāmāt vā api svayā śaktyā yathātattvam na rakṣati,
tat pāpam lokagarhitam
16. If he does not protect with his own ability (śakti) as is proper, whether from fear, delusion, or even desire, then that sin is censured by the people.
विनष्टः पश्यतस्तस्य रक्षिणः शरणागतः ।
आदाय सुकृतं तस्य सर्वं गच्छेदरक्षितः ॥१७॥
17. vinaṣṭaḥ paśyatastasya rakṣiṇaḥ śaraṇāgataḥ ,
ādāya sukṛtaṃ tasya sarvaṃ gacchedarakṣitaḥ.
17. vinaṣṭaḥ paśyataḥ tasya rakṣiṇaḥ śaraṇāgataḥ
| ādāya sukṛtam tasya sarvam gacchet arakṣitaḥ
17. tasya paśyataḥ rakṣiṇaḥ śaraṇāgataḥ vinaṣṭaḥ (cet),
arakṣitaḥ tasya sarvam sukṛtam ādāya gacchet
17. If a supplicant, under the very eyes of that protector, is destroyed, then that unprotected person carries away all of the protector's good deeds.
एवं दोषो महानत्र प्रपन्नानामरक्षणे ।
अस्वर्ग्यं चायशस्यं च बलवीर्यविनाशनम् ॥१८॥
18. evaṃ doṣo mahānatra prapannānāmarakṣaṇe ,
asvargyaṃ cāyaśasyaṃ ca balavīryavināśanam.
18. evam doṣaḥ mahān atra prapannānām arakṣaṇe |
asvargyam ca ayaśasyam ca balavīryavināśanam
18. evam atra prapannānām arakṣaṇe mahān doṣaḥ (asti),
ca (ca) asvargyam,
ca (ca) ayaśasyam,
balavīryavināśanam (ca asti)
18. Thus, there is a great fault in not protecting those who have taken refuge. It leads to loss of heaven, loss of fame, and the destruction of strength and valor.
करिष्यामि यथार्थं तु कण्डोर्वचनमुत्तमम् ।
धर्मिष्ठं च यशस्यं च स्वर्ग्यं स्यात्तु फलोदये ॥१९॥
19. kariṣyāmi yathārthaṃ tu kaṇḍorvacanamuttamam ,
dharmiṣṭhaṃ ca yaśasyaṃ ca svargyaṃ syāttu phalodaye.
19. kariṣyāmi yathārtham tu kaṇḍoḥ vacanam uttamam |
dharmiṣṭham ca yaśasyam ca svargyam syāt tu phalodaye
19. kaṇḍoḥ uttamam vacanam yathārtham kariṣyāmi tu,
ca (ca) dharmiṣṭham,
ca (ca) yaśasyam,
ca (ca) svargyam phalodaye syāt tu
19. I shall truly carry out Kaṇḍu's excellent instruction. And it shall certainly be most righteous (dharmiṣṭha), renowned, and conducive to heaven upon the fruition of its results.
सकृदेव प्रपन्नाय तवास्मीति च याचते ।
अभयं सर्वभूतेभ्यो ददाम्येतद्व्रतं मम ॥२०॥
20. sakṛdeva prapannāya tavāsmīti ca yācate ,
abhayaṃ sarvabhūtebhyo dadāmyetadvrataṃ mama.
20. sakṛt eva prapannāya tava asmi iti ca yācate
abhayam sarvabhūtebhyaḥ dadāmi etat vratam mama
20. sakṛt eva prapannāya tava asmi iti ca yācate
sarvabhūtebhyaḥ abhayam dadāmi etat mama vratam
20. To one who, having surrendered just once, requests 'I am yours,' I grant freedom from fear from all beings. This is my vow.
आनयैनं हरिश्रेष्ठ दत्तमस्याभयं मया ।
विभीषणो वा सुग्रीव यदि वा रावणः स्वयम् ॥२१॥
21. ānayainaṃ hariśreṣṭha dattamasyābhayaṃ mayā ,
vibhīṣaṇo vā sugrīva yadi vā rāvaṇaḥ svayam.
21. ānaya enam hariśreṣṭha dattam asya abhayam mayā
vibhīṣaṇaḥ vā sugrīva yadi vā rāvaṇaḥ svayam
21. hariśreṣṭha enam ānaya.
asya abhayam mayā dattam.
vibhīṣaṇaḥ vā yadi vā sugrīva rāvaṇaḥ svayam
21. O best of monkeys, bring him here! Freedom from fear has been granted by me to him. Be he Vibhīṣaṇa, or Sugrīva, or even Rāvaṇa himself.
ततस्तु सुग्रीववचो निशम्य तद्धरीश्वरेणाभिहितं नरेश्वरः ।
विभीषणेनाशु जगाम संगमं पतत्रिराजेन यथा पुरंदरः ॥२२॥
22. tatastu sugrīvavaco niśamya taddharīśvareṇābhihitaṃ nareśvaraḥ ,
vibhīṣaṇenāśu jagāma saṃgamaṃ patatrirājena yathā puraṃdaraḥ.
22. tataḥ tu sugrīvavacaḥ niśamya tat
harīśvareṇa abhihitam nareśvaraḥ
vibhīṣaṇena āśu jagāma saṃgamam
patatrirājena yathā puraṃdaraḥ
22. tataḥ tu nareśvaraḥ harīśvareṇa
abhihitam tat sugrīvavacaḥ niśamya
yathā puraṃdaraḥ patatrirājena
āśu vibhīṣaṇena saṃgamam jagāma
22. Then, hearing that speech of Sugrīva, spoken by the lord of monkeys, the lord of men (Rāma) quickly went to meet Vibhīṣaṇa, just as Indra (Puraṃdara) would meet Garuḍa (Patatrirāja).
