तच्छ्रुत्वा भाषितं तस्य शत्रुघ्नस्य महात्मनः ।
क्रोधमाहारयत्तीव्रं तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. tacchrutvā bhāṣitaṃ tasya śatrughnasya mahātmanaḥ ,
krodhamāhārayattīvraṃ tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti cābravīt.

1. Having heard that speech of the noble Shatrughna, he (Lavaṇa) felt intense anger and exclaimed, 'Stop! Stop!'
पाणौ पाणिं विनिष्पिष्य दन्तान् कटकटाय्य च ।
लवणो रघुशार्दूलमाह्वयामास चासकृत् ॥२॥
2. pāṇau pāṇiṃ viniṣpiṣya dantān kaṭakaṭāyya ca ,
lavaṇo raghuśārdūlamāhvayāmāsa cāsakṛt.

2. Rubbing his hands together and gnashing his teeth, Lavaṇa repeatedly challenged the best of the Raghus (Raghuśārdūla).
तं ब्रुवाणं तथा वाक्यं लवणं घोरविक्रमम् ।
शत्रुघ्नो देव शत्रुघ्न इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. taṃ bruvāṇaṃ tathā vākyaṃ lavaṇaṃ ghoravikramam ,
śatrughno deva śatrughna idaṃ vacanamabravīt.
3. tam bruvāṇam tathā vākyam lavaṇam ghoravikramam
śatrughnaḥ deva śatrughna idam vacanam abravīt

3. Shatrughna, the divine slayer of foes, then spoke these words to Lavana, who was speaking thus and possessed terrible valor.
शत्रुघ्नो न तदा जातो यदान्ये निर्जितास्त्वया ।
तदद्य बाणाभिहतो व्रज तं यमसादनम् ॥४॥
4. śatrughno na tadā jāto yadānye nirjitāstvayā ,
tadadya bāṇābhihato vraja taṃ yamasādanam.
4. śatrughnaḥ na tadā jātaḥ yadā anye nirjitāḥ
tvayā tat adya bāṇābhihataḥ vraja tam yamasādanam

4. Shatrughna was not born then when others were conquered by you. Therefore, today, struck by my arrows, go to that abode of Yama.
ऋषयो ऽप्यद्य पापात्मन्मया त्वां निहतं रणे ।
पश्यन्तु विप्रा विद्वांसस्त्रिदशा इव रावणम् ॥५॥
5. ṛṣayo'pyadya pāpātmanmayā tvāṃ nihataṃ raṇe ,
paśyantu viprā vidvāṃsastridaśā iva rāvaṇam.
5. ṛṣayaḥ api adya pāpātman mayā tvām nihatam raṇe
paśyantu viprāḥ vidvāṃsaḥ tridaśāḥ iva rāvaṇam
5. pāpātman adya mayā raṇe tvām nihatam ṛṣayaḥ api

5. O evil-souled (ātman) one, let the sages, wise Brahmins, and divine beings witness you slain by me in battle today, just as (they witnessed) Ravana.
त्वयि मद्बाणनिर्दग्धे पतिते ऽद्य निशाचर ।
पुरं जनपदं चापि क्षेममेतद्भविष्यति ॥६॥
6. tvayi madbāṇanirdagdhe patite'dya niśācara ,
puraṃ janapadaṃ cāpi kṣemametadbhaviṣyati.
6. tvayi matbāṇanirdagdhe patite adya niśācara
puram janapadam ca api kṣemam etat bhaviṣyati
6. niśācara adya tvayi matbāṇanirdagdhe patite
puram janapadam ca api etat kṣemam bhaviṣyati
6. O night-wanderer, when you are utterly destroyed by my arrows and fall today, this city and the region will also become safe and secure.
अद्य मद्बाहुनिष्क्रान्तः शरो वज्रनिभाननः ।
प्रवेक्ष्यते ते हृदयं पद्ममंशुरिवार्कजः ॥७॥
7. adya madbāhuniṣkrāntaḥ śaro vajranibhānanaḥ ,
pravekṣyate te hṛdayaṃ padmamaṃśurivārkajaḥ.
7. adya mat-bāhu-niṣkrāntaḥ śaraḥ vajra-nibha-ānanaḥ
pravekṣyate te hṛdayam padmam aṃśuḥ iva arka-jaḥ
7. adya mat-bāhu-niṣkrāntaḥ vajra-nibha-ānanaḥ śaraḥ
te hṛdayam pravekṣyate padmam arka-jaḥ aṃśuḥ iva
7. Today, this arrow, discharged from my arm and resembling a thunderbolt, will penetrate your heart, just as a sunbeam enters a lotus.
एवमुक्तो महावृक्षं लवणः क्रोधमूर्छितः ।
शत्रुघ्नोरसि चिक्षेप तं शूरः शतधाच्छिनत् ॥८॥
8. evamukto mahāvṛkṣaṃ lavaṇaḥ krodhamūrchitaḥ ,
śatrughnorasi cikṣepa taṃ śūraḥ śatadhācchinat.
8. evam uktaḥ mahā-vṛkṣam lavaṇaḥ krodha-mūrchitaḥ
śatrughna-urasi cikṣepa tam śūraḥ śatadhā acchinat
8. evam uktaḥ krodha-mūrchitaḥ lavaṇaḥ mahā-vṛkṣam
śatrughna-urasi cikṣepa śūraḥ tam śatadhā acchinat
8. Addressed in this manner, Lavaṇa, overcome with rage, hurled a mighty tree at Śatrughna's chest. But the hero shattered it into a hundred pieces.
तद्दृष्ट्वा विफलं कर्म राक्षसः पुनरेव तु ।
पादपान् सुबहून् गृह्य शत्रुघ्ने व्यसृजद्बली ॥९॥
9. taddṛṣṭvā viphalaṃ karma rākṣasaḥ punareva tu ,
pādapān subahūn gṛhya śatrughne vyasṛjadbalī.
9. tat dṛṣṭvā viphalam karma rākṣasaḥ punar eva tu
pādapān su-bahūn gṛhya śatrughne vyasṛjat balī
9. rākṣasaḥ balī tat viphalam karma dṛṣṭvā punar
eva tu su-bahūn pādapān gṛhya śatrughne vyasṛjat
9. Upon seeing that action (karma) was futile, the mighty demon (rākṣasa) again seized many trees and hurled them at Śatrughna.
शत्रुघ्नश्चापि तेजस्वी वृक्षानापततो बहून् ।
त्रिभिश्चतुर्भिरेकैकं चिच्छेद नतपर्वभिः ॥१०॥
10. śatrughnaścāpi tejasvī vṛkṣānāpatato bahūn ,
tribhiścaturbhirekaikaṃ ciccheda nataparvabhiḥ.
10. śatrughnaḥ ca api tejasvī vṛkṣān āpatataḥ bahūn
tribhiḥ caturbhiḥ eka-ekam ciccheda nata-parvabhiḥ
10. tejasvī śatrughnaḥ ca api tribhiḥ caturbhiḥ
nata-parvabhiḥ āpatataḥ bahūn vṛkṣān eka-ekam ciccheda
10. And the radiant Śatrughna also, with three or four arrows, each having bent joints (nata-parva), cut down each of the many falling trees.
ततो बाणमयं वर्षं व्यसृजद् राक्षसोरसि ।
शत्रुघ्नो वीर्यसंपन्नो विव्यथे न च राक्षसः ॥११॥
11. tato bāṇamayaṃ varṣaṃ vyasṛjad rākṣasorasi ,
śatrughno vīryasaṃpanno vivyathe na ca rākṣasaḥ.
11. tataḥ bāṇamayam varṣam vyasṛjat rākṣasa urasi
śatrughnaḥ vīryasampannaḥ vivyathe na ca rākṣasaḥ
11. tataḥ vīryasampannaḥ śatrughnaḥ rākṣasa urasi
bāṇamayam varṣam vyasṛjat ca rākṣasaḥ na vivyathe
11. Then, endowed with prowess, Shatrughna discharged a shower of arrows upon the demon's chest, but the demon was not pained.
ततः प्रहस्य लवणो वृक्षमुत्पाट्य लीलया ।
शिरस्यभ्यहनच्छूरं स्रस्ताङ्गः स मुमोह वै ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ prahasya lavaṇo vṛkṣamutpāṭya līlayā ,
śirasyabhyahanacchūraṃ srastāṅgaḥ sa mumoha vai.
12. tataḥ prahasya lavaṇaḥ vṛkṣam utpāṭya līlayā
śirasi abhyahanat śūram srastāṅgaḥ saḥ mumoha vai
12. tataḥ lavaṇaḥ prahasya līlayā vṛkṣam utpāṭya
śūram śirasi abhyahanat saḥ srastāṅgaḥ vai mumoha
12. Then, Lavana, having laughed loudly, playfully uprooted a tree and struck the brave one on the head. He (Shatrughna), with his limbs collapsing, certainly fainted.
तस्मिन्निपतिते वीरे हाहाकारो महानभूत् ।
ऋषीणां देव संघानां गन्धर्वाप्सरसामपि ॥१३॥
13. tasminnipatite vīre hāhākāro mahānabhūt ,
ṛṣīṇāṃ deva saṃghānāṃ gandharvāpsarasāmapi.
13. tasmin nipatite vīre hāhākāraḥ mahān abhūt
ṛṣīṇām deva saṅghānām gandharva apsarasām api
13. tasmin vīre nipatite ṛṣīṇām devasaṅghānām
gandharvāpsarasām api mahān hāhākāraḥ abhūt
13. When that hero fell, a great cry of lamentation arose from the sages, the hosts of deities, and also from the Gandharvas and Apsaras.
तमवज्ञाय तु हतं शत्रुघ्नं भुवि पातितम् ।
रक्षो लब्धान्तरमपि न विवेश स्वमालयम् ॥१४॥
14. tamavajñāya tu hataṃ śatrughnaṃ bhuvi pātitam ,
rakṣo labdhāntaramapi na viveśa svamālayam.
14. tam avajñāya tu hatam śatrughnam bhuvi pātitam
rakṣaḥ labdhāntaram api na viveśa svam ālayam
14. tu rakṣaḥ tam hatam bhuvi pātitam śatrughnam
avajñāya labdhāntaram api svam ālayam na viveśa
14. However, disregarding Shatrughna, who was slain and fallen on the ground, the demon, even though he had gained an opportunity, did not enter his own abode.
नापि शूलं प्रजग्राह तं दृष्ट्वा भुवि पातितम् ।
ततो हत इति ज्ञात्वा तान्भक्षान् समुदावहत् ॥१५॥
15. nāpi śūlaṃ prajagrāha taṃ dṛṣṭvā bhuvi pātitam ,
tato hata iti jñātvā tānbhakṣān samudāvahat.
15. na api śūlam prajagrāha tam dṛṣṭvā bhuvi pātitam
| tataḥ hataḥ iti jñātvā tān bhakṣān samudāvahat
15. Seeing him fallen on the ground, he did not even pick up the spear. Then, knowing that he was killed, he gathered those provisions.
मुहूर्ताल् लब्धसंज्ञस्तु पुनस्तस्थौ धृतायुधः ।
शत्रुघ्नो राक्षसद्वारि ऋषिभिः संप्रपूजितः ॥१६॥
16. muhūrtāl labdhasaṃjñastu punastasthau dhṛtāyudhaḥ ,
śatrughno rākṣasadvāri ṛṣibhiḥ saṃprapūjitaḥ.
16. muhūrtāt labdhasaṃjñaḥ tu punaḥ tasthau dhṛtāyudhaḥ
| śatrughnaḥ rākṣasadvāri ṛṣibhiḥ samprapūjitaḥ
16. After a moment, Shatrughna, having regained consciousness, stood up again, holding his weapons. At the demon's gate, he was well-honored by the sages.
ततो दिव्यममोघं तं जग्राह शरमुत्तमम् ।
ज्वलन्तं तेजसा घोरं पूरयन्तं दिशो दश ॥१७॥
17. tato divyamamoghaṃ taṃ jagrāha śaramuttamam ,
jvalantaṃ tejasā ghoraṃ pūrayantaṃ diśo daśa.
17. tataḥ divyam amogham tam jagrāha śaram uttamam
| jvalantam tejasā ghoram pūrayantam diśaḥ daśa
17. Then he grasped that divine, unfailing, and excellent arrow, which was blazing with splendor, dreadful, and filling the ten directions.
वज्राननं वज्रवेगं मेरुमन्दर गौरवम् ।
नतं पर्वसु सर्वेषु संयुगेष्वपराजितम् ॥१८॥
18. vajrānanaṃ vajravegaṃ merumandara gauravam ,
nataṃ parvasu sarveṣu saṃyugeṣvaparājitam.
18. vajrānanām vajravegam merumandara gauravam
| natam parvasu sarveṣu saṃyugeṣu aparājitam
18. With a thunderbolt-like tip, the speed of a thunderbolt, and the majesty of Mount Meru and Mandara, it was perfectly formed at all its sections and unconquered in all battles.
असृक्चन्दनदिग्धाङ्गं चारुपत्रं पतत्रिणम् ।
दानवेन्द्राचलेन्द्राणामसुराणां च दारुणम् ॥१९॥
19. asṛkcandanadigdhāṅgaṃ cārupatraṃ patatriṇam ,
dānavendrācalendrāṇāmasurāṇāṃ ca dāruṇam.
19. asṛkcandanadigdhāṅgam cārupatram patatriṇam
dānave-ndrācale-ndrāṇām asurāṇām ca dāruṇam
19. patatriṇam asṛkcandanadigdhāṅgam cārupatram
dāruṇam dānave-ndrācale-ndrāṇām ca asurāṇām
19. Its limbs were smeared with blood and sandalwood paste, it had beautiful wings, and this winged creature was dreadful to the chiefs of the dānavās, the chief mountains, and the asuras.
तं दीप्तमिव कालाग्निं युगान्ते समुपस्थिते ।
दृष्ट्वा सर्वाणि भूतानि परित्रासमुपागमन् ॥२०॥
20. taṃ dīptamiva kālāgniṃ yugānte samupasthite ,
dṛṣṭvā sarvāṇi bhūtāni paritrāsamupāgaman.
20. tam dīptam iva kālāgnim yugānte samupasthite
dṛṣṭvā sarvāṇi bhūtāni paritrāsam upāgaman
20. sarvāṇi bhūtāni yugānte samupasthite tam
kālāgnim dīptam iva dṛṣṭvā paritrāsam upāgaman
20. Having seen that entity, blazing like the fire of universal dissolution (kālāgni) when the end of the age (yuga) had arrived, all beings became extremely terrified.
सदेवासुरगन्धर्वं समुनिं साप्सरोगणम् ।
जगद्धि सर्वमस्वस्थं पितामहमुपस्थितम् ॥२१॥
21. sadevāsuragandharvaṃ samuniṃ sāpsarogaṇam ,
jagaddhi sarvamasvasthaṃ pitāmahamupasthitam.
21. sadevāsuragandharvam samunim sāpsarogaṇam
jagat hi sarvam asvastham pitāmaham upasthitam
21. hi jagat sarvam sadevāsuragandharvam samunim
sāpsarogaṇam asvastham pitāmaham upasthitam
21. Indeed, the entire world (jagat), along with the devas, asuras, gandharvas, munis, and hosts of apsaras, became disturbed and approached the Grandfather (Brahmā).
ऊचुश्च देवदेवेशं वरदं प्रपितामहम् ।
कच्चिल् लोकक्षयो देव प्राप्तो वा युगसंकयः ॥२२॥
22. ūcuśca devadeveśaṃ varadaṃ prapitāmaham ,
kaccil lokakṣayo deva prāpto vā yugasaṃkayaḥ.
22. ūcuḥ ca devadeveśam varadam prapitāmaham kaccit
lokakṣayaḥ deva prāptaḥ vā yugasaṃkṣayaḥ
22. ca ūcuḥ devadeveśam varadam prapitāmaham: kaccit
he deva lokakṣayaḥ prāptaḥ vā yugasaṃkṣayaḥ
22. And they (the beings) spoke to the God of gods, the bestower of boons, the Great-Grandfather (Brahmā), saying: 'O Lord, has the destruction of the worlds (loka) arrived, or the complete dissolution of the age (yuga)?'
नेदृशं दृष्टपूर्वं न श्रुतं वा प्रपितामह ।
देवानां भयसंमोहो लोकानां संक्षयः प्रभो ॥२३॥
23. nedṛśaṃ dṛṣṭapūrvaṃ na śrutaṃ vā prapitāmaha ,
devānāṃ bhayasaṃmoho lokānāṃ saṃkṣayaḥ prabho.
23. na īdṛśam dṛṣṭapūrvam na śrutam vā prapitāmaha
devānām bhayasaṃmohaḥ lokānām saṃkṣayaḥ prabho
23. prapitāmaha prabho īdṛśam na dṛṣṭapūrvam na vā
śrutam devānām bhayasaṃmohaḥ lokānām saṃkṣayaḥ
23. O Grandfather, neither such a thing has been seen before nor heard. There is great fear and confusion among the gods, and destruction among the worlds, O Lord.
तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा ब्रह्मा लोकपितामनः ।
भयकारणमाचष्टे देवानामभयंकरः ॥२४॥
24. teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā brahmā lokapitāmanaḥ ,
bhayakāraṇamācaṣṭe devānāmabhayaṃkaraḥ.
24. teṣām tat vacanam śrutvā brahmā lokapitāmanaḥ
bhayakāraṇam ācaṣṭe devānām abhayaṃkaraḥ
24. teṣām tat vacanam śrutvā lokapitāmanaḥ devānām
abhayaṃkaraḥ brahmā bhayakāraṇam ācaṣṭe
24. Having heard their words, Brahmā, the grandfather (prapitāmaha) of the worlds, who grants fearlessness to the gods, explained the cause of their fear.
वधाय लवणस्याजौ शरः शत्रुघ्नधारितः ।
तेजसा यस्य सर्वे स्म संमूढाः सुरसत्तमाः ॥२५॥
25. vadhāya lavaṇasyājau śaraḥ śatrughnadhāritaḥ ,
tejasā yasya sarve sma saṃmūḍhāḥ surasattamāḥ.
25. vadhāya lavaṇasya ājau śaraḥ śatrughnadhāritaḥ
tejasā yasya sarve sma saṃmūḍhāḥ surasattamāḥ
25. lavasya vadhāya ājau śaraḥ śatrughnadhāritaḥ
yasya tejasā sarve surasattamāḥ sma saṃmūḍhāḥ
25. The arrow, wielded by Śatrughna, for the destruction of Lavaṇa in battle, by whose (arrow's) brilliant power (tejas) all of us, the foremost among the gods, were utterly bewildered.
एषो हि पूर्वं देवस्य लोककर्तुः सनातनः ।
शरस्तेजोमयो वत्सा येन वै भयमागतम् ॥२६॥
26. eṣo hi pūrvaṃ devasya lokakartuḥ sanātanaḥ ,
śarastejomayo vatsā yena vai bhayamāgatam.
26. eṣaḥ hi pūrvam devasya lokakartuḥ sanātanaḥ
śaraḥ tejomayaḥ vatsā yena vai bhayam āgatam
26. vatsā eṣaḥ hi pūrvam devasya lokakartuḥ
sanātanaḥ tejomayaḥ śaraḥ yena vai bhayam āgatam
26. O son, this is indeed that eternal arrow, made of pure radiance (tejas), belonging to the god who is the creator of the worlds. It is by this (arrow) that such fear has certainly arisen.
एष वै कैटभस्यार्थे मधुनश्च महाशरः ।
सृष्टो महात्मना तेन वधार्थं दैत्ययोस्तयोः ॥२७॥
27. eṣa vai kaiṭabhasyārthe madhunaśca mahāśaraḥ ,
sṛṣṭo mahātmanā tena vadhārthaṃ daityayostayoḥ.
27. eṣa vai kaiṭabhasya arthe madhunaḥ ca mahāśaraḥ
sṛṣṭaḥ mahātmanā tena vadhārtham daityayoḥ tayoḥ
27. This great arrow was indeed created by that great-souled one for the sake of Kaiṭabha and Madhu, for the purpose of killing those two demons.
एवमेतं प्रजानीध्वं विष्णोस्तेजोमयं शरम् ।
एषा चैव तनुः पूर्वा विष्णोस्तस्य महात्मनः ॥२८॥
28. evametaṃ prajānīdhvaṃ viṣṇostejomayaṃ śaram ,
eṣā caiva tanuḥ pūrvā viṣṇostasya mahātmanaḥ.
28. evam etam prajānīdhvam viṣṇoḥ tejomayam śaram
eṣā ca eva tanuḥ pūrvā viṣṇoḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ
28. Thus, you all should know this arrow to be made of Viṣṇu's divine radiance. And this, indeed, is the original form of that great-souled Viṣṇu.
इतो गच्छता पश्यध्वं वध्यमानं महात्मना ।
रामानुजेन वीरेण लवणं राक्षसोत्तमम् ॥२९॥
29. ito gacchatā paśyadhvaṃ vadhyamānaṃ mahātmanā ,
rāmānujena vīreṇa lavaṇaṃ rākṣasottamam.
29. itaḥ gacchatā paśyadhvam vadhyamānam mahātmanā
rāmānujena vīreṇa lavaṇam rākṣasottamam
29. Go from here and witness Lavaṇa, the foremost of the rākṣasas (demons), being slain by the great-souled, heroic brother of Rāma.
तस्य ते देवदेवस्य निशम्य मधुरां गिरम् ।
आजग्मुर्यत्र युध्येते शत्रुघ्नलवणाव् उभौ ॥३०॥
30. tasya te devadevasya niśamya madhurāṃ giram ,
ājagmuryatra yudhyete śatrughnalavaṇāv ubhau.
30. tasya te devadevasya niśamya madhurām giram
ājagmuḥ yatra yudhyete śatrughṇalavaṇau ubhau
30. Having heard the sweet words of that god of gods, they both arrived at the place where Śatrughna and Lavaṇa were fighting.
तं शरं दिव्यसंकाशं शत्रुघ्नकरधारितम् ।
ददृशुः सर्वभूतानि युगान्ताग्निमिवोत्थितम् ॥३१॥
31. taṃ śaraṃ divyasaṃkāśaṃ śatrughnakaradhāritam ,
dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni yugāntāgnimivotthitam.
31. tam śaram divyasaṃkāśam śatrughnakaradhāritam
dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni yugāntāgnim iva utthitam
31. All beings saw that splendid, divine-like arrow, held in Śatrughna's hand, as if it were the fire that rises at the dissolution of a cosmic age.
