निवृत्तकार्यं सिद्धार्थं प्रमदाभिरतं सदा ।
प्राप्तवन्तमभिप्रेतान् सर्वानेव मनोरथान् ॥३॥
3. nivṛttakāryaṃ siddhārthaṃ pramadābhirataṃ sadā ,
prāptavantamabhipretān sarvāneva manorathān.

स्वां च पात्नीमभिप्रेतां तारां चापि समीप्सिताम् ।
विहरन्तमहोरात्रं कृतार्थं विगतज्वलम् ॥४॥
4. svāṃ ca pātnīmabhipretāṃ tārāṃ cāpi samīpsitām ,
viharantamahorātraṃ kṛtārthaṃ vigatajvalam.

4. ...including his beloved wife Tara, for whom he greatly longed. He thus spent day and night in enjoyment, with his aims accomplished and free from all anxiety.
क्रीडन्तमिव देवेशं नन्दने ऽप्सरसां गणैः ।
मन्त्रिषु न्यस्तकार्यं च मन्त्रिणामनवेक्षकम् ॥५॥
5. krīḍantamiva deveśaṃ nandane'psarasāṃ gaṇaiḥ ,
mantriṣu nyastakāryaṃ ca mantriṇāmanavekṣakam.
5. krīḍantam iva deveśam nandane apsarasām gaṇaiḥ
mantriṣu nyastakāryam ca mantriṇām anavekṣakam
5. (saḥ) deveśam iva nandane apsarasām gaṇaiḥ krīḍantam āsīt;
mantriṣu kāryam nyastam ca mantriṇām anavekṣakam āsīt
5. He was like the lord of gods playing in the Nandana garden with hosts of Apsaras; having entrusted his tasks to ministers, he then neglected to oversee those very ministers.
उत्सन्नराज्यसंदेशं कामवृत्तमवस्थितम् ।
निश्चितार्थो ऽर्थतत्त्वज्ञः कालधर्मविशेषवित् ॥६॥
6. utsannarājyasaṃdeśaṃ kāmavṛttamavasthitam ,
niścitārtho'rthatattvajñaḥ kāladharmaviśeṣavit.

niścitārthaḥ arthatattvajñaḥ kāladharmaviśeṣavit
6. (saḥ) utsannarājyasaṃdeśam

6. He had neglected state communications and acted according to his own desires. (But there was) one whose purpose was resolute, who understood the true nature of affairs, and who knew the specific characteristics of time's natural law (dharma) -
प्रसाद्य वाक्यैर्मधुरैर्हेतुमद्भिर्मनोरमैः ।
वाक्यविद्वाक्यतत्त्वज्ञं हरीशं मारुतात्मजः ॥७॥
7. prasādya vākyairmadhurairhetumadbhirmanoramaiḥ ,
vākyavidvākyatattvajñaṃ harīśaṃ mārutātmajaḥ.
7. prasādya vākyaiḥ madhuraiḥ hetumadbhiḥ manoramaiḥ
vākyavit vākyatattvajñam harīśam mārutātmajaḥ
7. mārutātmajaḥ vākyavit (san) madhuraiḥ hetumadbhiḥ
manoramaiḥ vākyaiḥ vākyatattvajñam harīśam prasādya
7. The son of Maruta (Mārutātmajaḥ), an expert in speech (vākyavit), having placated the lord of monkeys (Harīśam), who himself possessed deep knowledge of speech's essence, by means of words that were sweet, reasoned, and delightful.
शक्तिमानसि विक्रान्तो वानरर्ष्क गणेश्वर ।
कर्तुं दाशरथेः प्रीतिमाज्ञायां किं नु सज्जसे ॥२०॥
20. śaktimānasi vikrānto vānararṣka gaṇeśvara ,
kartuṃ dāśaratheḥ prītimājñāyāṃ kiṃ nu sajjase.
20. śaktimān asi vikrāntaḥ vānararṣkagaṇeśvara
kartum dāśaratheḥ prītim ājñāyām kim nu sajjase
20. he vānararṣkagaṇeśvara,
tvam śaktimān vikrāntaḥ asi; kim nu ājñāyām dāśaratheḥ prītim kartum sajjase?
20. O lord of the multitudes of monkeys and bears (vānararṣkagaṇeśvara)! You are truly powerful (śaktimān) and valiant (vikrāntaḥ). Why then are you delaying to bring satisfaction (prītim) to the son of Daśaratha (Rāma) concerning his command (ājñāyām)?
कामं खलु शरैर् शक्तः सुरासुरमहोरगान् ।
वशे दाशरथिः कर्तुं त्वत्प्रतिज्ञां तु काङ्क्षते ॥२१॥
21. kāmaṃ khalu śarair śaktaḥ surāsuramahoragān ,
vaśe dāśarathiḥ kartuṃ tvatpratijñāṃ tu kāṅkṣate.
21. kāmam khalu śaraiḥ śaktaḥ surāsuramahoragān vaśe
dāśarathiḥ kartum tvatpratijñām tu kāṅkṣate
21. dāśarathiḥ śaraiḥ surāsuramahoragān vaśe kartum
khalu kāmam śaktaḥ tu tvatpratijñām kāṅkṣate
21. Indeed, Rāma, the son of Daśaratha, is certainly capable of bringing gods, demons, and great serpents under his control with his arrows, but he (first) desires your solemn promise.
प्राणत्यागाविशङ्केन कृतं तेन तव प्रियम् ।
तस्य मार्गाम वैदेहीं पृथिव्यामपि चाम्बरे ॥२२॥
22. prāṇatyāgāviśaṅkena kṛtaṃ tena tava priyam ,
tasya mārgāma vaidehīṃ pṛthivyāmapi cāmbare.
22. prāṇatyāgāviśaṅkena kṛtam tena tava priyam
tasya mārgāma vaidehīm pṛthivyām api ca ambare
22. prāṇatyāgāviśaṅkena tena tava priyam kṛtam
tasya vaidehīm pṛthivyām ca ambare api mārgāma
22. By him (Rāma), fearless of sacrificing his life, that which is dear to you has been accomplished. Therefore, let us search for Vaidehī (Sītā) for his sake, both on earth and in the sky.
न देवा न च गन्धर्वा नासुरा न मरुद्गणाः ।
न च यक्षा भयं तस्य कुर्युः किमुत राक्षसाः ॥२३॥
23. na devā na ca gandharvā nāsurā na marudgaṇāḥ ,
na ca yakṣā bhayaṃ tasya kuryuḥ kimuta rākṣasāḥ.
23. na devāḥ na ca gandharvāḥ na asurāḥ na marudgaṇāḥ
na ca yakṣāḥ bhayam tasya kuryuḥ kim uta rākṣasāḥ
23. devāḥ na ca gandharvāḥ na asurāḥ na marudgaṇāḥ ca
yakṣāḥ na tasya bhayam kuryuḥ kim uta rākṣasāḥ
23. Neither the gods, nor the Gandharvas, nor the Asuras, nor the hosts of Maruts, nor the Yakṣas would be able to cause him any fear; what then to speak of the Rākṣasas?
तदेवं शक्तियुक्तस्य पूर्वं प्रियकृतस्तथा ।
रामस्यार्हसि पिङ्गेश कर्तुं सर्वात्मना प्रियम् ॥२४॥
24. tadevaṃ śaktiyuktasya pūrvaṃ priyakṛtastathā ,
rāmasyārhasi piṅgeśa kartuṃ sarvātmanā priyam.
24. tat evam śaktiyuktasya pūrvam priyakṛtaḥ tathā
rāmasya arhasi piṅgeśa kartum sarvātmanā priyam
24. piṅgeśa tat evam śaktiyuktasya tathā pūrvam
priyakṛtaḥ rāmasya priyam sarvātmanā kartum arhasi
24. Therefore, O leader of monkeys (Piṅgeśa), you ought to wholeheartedly (sarvātmanā) do what is pleasing for Rāma, who is endowed with such power (śakti) and who has previously done what is dear to you.
नाधस्तादवनौ नाप्सु गतिर्नोपरि चाम्बरे ।
कस्य चित् सज्जते ऽस्माकं कपीश्वर तवाज्ञया ॥२५॥
25. nādhastādavanau nāpsu gatirnopari cāmbare ,
kasya cit sajjate'smākaṃ kapīśvara tavājñayā.
25. na adhaḥtāt avanau na apsu gatiḥ na upari ca ambare .
kasya cit sajjate asmākam kapīśvara tava ājñayā
25. kapīśvara tava ājñayā na adhaḥtāt avanau na apsu
na upari ca ambare asmākam kasya cit gatiḥ sajjate
25. O King of Monkeys, by your command, the movement of any of us is not hindered neither below on the earth, nor in the waters, nor above in the sky.
तदाज्ञापय कः किं ते कृते वसतु कुत्र चित् ।
हरयो ह्यप्रधृष्यास्ते सन्ति कोट्यग्रतो ऽनघ ॥२६॥
26. tadājñāpaya kaḥ kiṃ te kṛte vasatu kutra cit ,
harayo hyapradhṛṣyāste santi koṭyagrato'nagha.
26. tat ājñāpaya kaḥ kim te kṛte vasatu kutra cit .
harayaḥ hi apradhṛṣyāḥ te santi koṭyaḥ agrataḥ anagha
26. anagha,
tat ājñāpaya,
te kṛte kaḥ kim kutra cit vasatu.
hi,
te harayaḥ apradhṛṣyāḥ,
koṭyaḥ agrataḥ santi.
26. Therefore, O sinless one, command who should do what for your sake, and where they should be positioned. For these unassailable monkeys stand in crores before you.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा काले साधुनिवेदितम् ।
सुग्रीवः सत्त्वसंपन्नश्चकार मतिमुत्तमाम् ॥२७॥
27. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā kāle sādhuniveditam ,
sugrīvaḥ sattvasaṃpannaścakāra matimuttamām.
27. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā kāle sādhu niveditam .
sugrīvaḥ sattvasampannaḥ cakāra matim uttamām
27. kāle sādhu niveditam tasya tat vacanam śrutvā,
sattvasampannaḥ sugrīvaḥ uttamām matim cakāra.
27. Having heard his words, which were well-presented at the opportune time, Sugriva, endowed with courage, formed an excellent resolve.
स संदिदेशाभिमतं नीलं नित्यकृतोद्यमम् ।
दिक्षु सर्वासु सर्वेषां सैन्यानामुपसंग्रहे ॥२८॥
28. sa saṃdideśābhimataṃ nīlaṃ nityakṛtodyamam ,
dikṣu sarvāsu sarveṣāṃ sainyānāmupasaṃgrahe.
28. sa saṃdideśa abhimatam nīlam nityakṛtodyamam .
dikṣu sarvāsu sarveṣām sainyānām upasaṃgrahe
28. sa (sugrīvaḥ) abhimatam nityakṛtodyamam nīlam sarvāsu dikṣu sarveṣām sainyānām upasaṃgrahe saṃdideśa.
28. He (Sugriva) commanded the esteemed Nila, who was always diligent, regarding the collection of all armies in all directions.
यथा सेना समग्रा मे यूथपालाश्च सर्वशः ।
समागच्छन्त्यसंगेन सेनाग्राणि तथा कुरु ॥२९॥
29. yathā senā samagrā me yūthapālāśca sarvaśaḥ ,
samāgacchantyasaṃgena senāgrāṇi tathā kuru.
29. yathā senā samagrā me yūthapālāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
samāgacchanti asaṅgena senāgrāṇi tathā kuru
29. me samagrā senā ca sarvaśaḥ yūthapālāḥ asaṅgena
yathā samāgacchanti tathā senāgrāṇi kuru
29. Just as my entire army and all the group leaders assemble unimpededly, so too, organize the vanguard.
ये त्वन्तपालाः प्लवगाः शीघ्रगा व्यवसायिनः ।
समानयन्तु ते सैन्यं त्वरिताः शासनान्मम ।
स्वयं चानन्तरं सैन्यं भवानेवानुपश्यतु ॥३०॥
30. ye tvantapālāḥ plavagāḥ śīghragā vyavasāyinaḥ ,
samānayantu te sainyaṃ tvaritāḥ śāsanānmama ,
svayaṃ cānantaraṃ sainyaṃ bhavānevānupaśyatu.
30. ye tu antapālāḥ plavagāḥ śīghragāḥ
vyavasāyinaḥ samānayantu te sainyam
tvaritāḥ śāsanāt mama svayam ca
anantaram sainyam bhavān eva anupaśyatu
30. ye tu antapālāḥ plavagāḥ śīghragāḥ
vyavasāyinaḥ tvaritāḥ te mama śāsanāt
sainyam samānayantu ca bhavān
svayam anantaram sainyam eva anupaśyatu
30. Let those swift-moving, energetic monkey border guards (antapālāḥ) quickly lead my army according to my command. And you yourself, immediately thereafter, should inspect the army.
त्रिपञ्चरात्रादूर्ध्वं यः प्राप्नुयान्नेह वानरः ।
तस्य प्राणान्तिको दण्डो नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥३१॥
31. tripañcarātrādūrdhvaṃ yaḥ prāpnuyānneha vānaraḥ ,
tasya prāṇāntiko daṇḍo nātra kāryā vicāraṇā.
31. tripañcarātrāt ūrdhvam yaḥ prāpnuyāt na iha vānaraḥ
tasya prāṇāntikaḥ daṇḍaḥ na atra kāryā vicāraṇā
31. iha tripañcarātrāt ūrdhvam yaḥ vānaraḥ na prāpnuyāt
tasya prāṇāntikaḥ daṇḍaḥ atra vicāraṇā na kāryā
31. If any monkey does not arrive here within fifteen nights, the punishment for him shall be death. No deliberation should be made in this matter.
हरींश्च वृद्धानुपयातु साङ्गदो भवान्ममाज्ञामधिकृत्य निश्चिताम् ।
इति व्यवस्थां हरिपुंगवेश्वरो विधाय वेश्म प्रविवेश वीर्यवान् ॥३२॥
32. harīṃśca vṛddhānupayātu sāṅgado bhavānmamājñāmadhikṛtya niścitām ,
iti vyavasthāṃ haripuṃgaveśvaro vidhāya veśma praviveśa vīryavān.
32. harīn ca vṛddhān upayātu sāṅgadaḥ
bhavān mama ājñām adhikṛtya niścitām
iti vyavasthām haripuṅgaveśvaraḥ
vidhāya veśma praviveśa vīryavān
32. ca sāṅgadaḥ bhavān niścitām mama
ājñām adhikṛtya vṛddhān harīn upayātu
iti vyavasthām vidhāya vīryavān
haripuṅgaveśvaraḥ veśma praviveśa
32. And you, Angada (sāṅgada), should approach the elder monkeys, having received my definite command. Having thus made this arrangement, the powerful lord of the monkey chiefs (haripuṅgaveśvara) entered his dwelling.
