तदावसाने यज्ञस्य रामः परमदुर्मनाः ।
अपश्यमानो वैदेहीं मेने शून्यमिदं जगत् ।
शोकेन परमायत्तो न शान्तिं मनसागमत् ॥१॥
1. tadāvasāne yajñasya rāmaḥ paramadurmanāḥ ,
apaśyamāno vaidehīṃ mene śūnyamidaṃ jagat ,
śokena paramāyatto na śāntiṃ manasāgamat.

1. At the conclusion of that Vedic ritual (yajña), Rama, extremely distressed and not seeing Vaidehi (Sita), considered this world empty. Overcome by sorrow, he could not find peace of mind.
विसृज्य पार्थिवान् सर्वानृक्षवानरराक्षसान् ।
जनौघं ब्रह्ममुख्यानां वित्तपूर्णं व्यसर्जयत् ॥२॥
2. visṛjya pārthivān sarvānṛkṣavānararākṣasān ,
janaughaṃ brahmamukhyānāṃ vittapūrṇaṃ vyasarjayat.

2. Having dismissed all the kings, as well as the bears, monkeys, and rākṣasas, he then sent away the multitude of people, led by brahmins, providing them with ample wealth.
ततो विसृज्य तान् सर्वान् रामो राजीवलोचनः ।
हृदि कृत्वा तदा सीतामयोध्यां प्रविवेश सः ॥३॥
3. tato visṛjya tān sarvān rāmo rājīvalocanaḥ ,
hṛdi kṛtvā tadā sītāmayodhyāṃ praviveśa saḥ.

hṛdi kṛtvā tadā sītām ayodhyām praviveśa saḥ

3. Then, having dismissed all of them, Rama, whose eyes were like lotuses, entered Ayodhya, keeping Sita in his heart.
न सीतायाः परां भार्यां वव्रे स रघुनन्दनः ।
यज्ञे यज्ञे च पत्न्यर्थं जानकी काञ्चनी भवत् ॥४॥
4. na sītāyāḥ parāṃ bhāryāṃ vavre sa raghunandanaḥ ,
yajñe yajñe ca patnyarthaṃ jānakī kāñcanī bhavat.
4. na sītāyāḥ parām bhāryām vavre saḥ raghunandanaḥ
yajñe yajñe ca patnyartham jānakī kāñcanī bhavat
4. saḥ raghunandanaḥ sītāyāḥ parām bhāryām na vavre
ca yajñe yajñe patnyartham kāñcanī jānakī bhavat
4. That scion of Raghu (Rama) never chose another wife superior to Sita. And in every Vedic ritual (yajña), a golden image of Janaki served as his wife.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि वाजिमेधमुपाकरोत् ।
वाजपेयान्दशगुणांस्तथा बहुसुवर्णकान् ॥५॥
5. daśavarṣasahasrāṇi vājimedhamupākarot ,
vājapeyāndaśaguṇāṃstathā bahusuvarṇakān.

vājapeyān daśaguṇān tathā bahusuvarṇakān
5. saḥ (implied) daśavarṣasahasrāṇi vājimedham

5. He performed horse (vājimedha) Vedic rituals for ten thousand years, along with Vajapeya (vājapeya) rituals ten times that number, and many Bahusuvarṇaka (bahusuvarṇaka) rituals.
अग्निष्टोमातिरात्राभ्यां गोसवैश्च महाधनैः ।
ईजे क्रतुभिरन्यैश्च स श्रीमानाप्तदक्षिणैः ॥६॥
6. agniṣṭomātirātrābhyāṃ gosavaiśca mahādhanaiḥ ,
īje kratubhiranyaiśca sa śrīmānāptadakṣiṇaiḥ.
6. agniṣṭomātirātrābhyām gosavaiḥ ca mahādhanaiḥ
īje kratubhiḥ anyaiḥ ca saḥ śrīmān āptadakṣiṇaiḥ

āptadakṣiṇaiḥ anyaiḥ ca gosavaiḥ anyaiḥ ca kratubhiḥ īje
6. He, the glorious one, performed (Vedic rituals) with Agnishtoma (agniṣṭoma) and Atiratra (atirātra) rituals, and with other cow (gosava) Vedic rituals that involved great wealth and generous sacrificial fees.
एवं स कालः सुमहान् राज्यस्थस्य महात्मनः ।
धर्मे प्रयतमानस्य व्यतीयाद् राघवस्य तु ॥७॥
7. evaṃ sa kālaḥ sumahān rājyasthasya mahātmanaḥ ,
dharme prayatamānasya vyatīyād rāghavasya tu.
7. evam saḥ kālaḥ sumahān rājyasthasya mahātmanaḥ
dharme prayatamānasya vyatīyāt rāghavasya tu
7. evam tu rājyasthasya dharme prayatamānasya
mahātmanaḥ rāghavasya saḥ sumahān kālaḥ vyatīyāt
7. Thus, that very great period of time passed for the great-souled Rāghava (Rāma), who was ruling the kingdom and diligently upholding his natural law (dharma).
ऋक्षवानररक्षांसि स्थिता रामस्य शासने ।
अनुरज्यन्ति राजानो अहन्यहनि राघवम् ॥८॥
8. ṛkṣavānararakṣāṃsi sthitā rāmasya śāsane ,
anurajyanti rājāno ahanyahani rāghavam.

anurajyanti rājānaḥ ahanyahani rāghavam

8. Bears, monkeys, and rākṣasas remained under Rāma's command, and kings daily became devoted to Rāghava (Rāma).
काले वर्षति पर्जन्यः सुभिक्षं विमला दिशः ।
हृष्टपुष्टजनाकीर्णं पुरं जनपदस्तथा ॥९॥
9. kāle varṣati parjanyaḥ subhikṣaṃ vimalā diśaḥ ,
hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanākīrṇaṃ puraṃ janapadastathā.
9. kāle varṣati parjanyaḥ subhikṣam vimalā diśaḥ
hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanākīrṇam puram janapadaḥ tathā
9. parjanyaḥ kāle varṣati subhikṣam diśaḥ vimalā

9. The rain god showers at the proper time, there is abundance, and the directions are clear. The city and the countryside are filled with happy and well-nourished people.
नाकाले म्रियते कश्चिन्न व्याधिः प्राणिनां तदा ।
नाधर्मश्चाभवत् कश्चिद् रामे राज्यं प्रशासति ॥१०॥
10. nākāle mriyate kaścinna vyādhiḥ prāṇināṃ tadā ,
nādharmaścābhavat kaścid rāme rājyaṃ praśāsati.
10. na akāle mriyate kaścit na vyādhiḥ prāṇinām tadā na
adharmaḥ ca abhavat kaścit rāme rājyam praśāsati
10. kaścit akāle na mriyate tadā prāṇinām na vyādhiḥ
rāme rājyam praśāsati ca kaścit adharmaḥ na abhavat
10. No one died prematurely, nor was there any disease among living beings then. And no unrighteousness (adharma) occurred while Rāma was ruling the kingdom.
अथ दीर्घस्य कालस्य राममाता यशस्विनी ।
पुत्रपौत्रैः परिवृता कालधर्ममुपागमत् ॥११॥
11. atha dīrghasya kālasya rāmamātā yaśasvinī ,
putrapautraiḥ parivṛtā kāladharmamupāgamat.

putrapautraiḥ parivṛtā kāladharmam upāgamat

11. Then, after a long time, the renowned mother of Rāma, surrounded by her sons and grandsons, approached the law of time (kāladharma).
अन्वियाय सुमित्रापि कैकेयी च यशस्विनी ।
धर्मं कृत्वा बहुविधं त्रिदिवे पर्यवस्थिता ॥१२॥
12. anviyāya sumitrāpi kaikeyī ca yaśasvinī ,
dharmaṃ kṛtvā bahuvidhaṃ tridive paryavasthitā.
12. anviyāya sumitrā api kaikeyī ca yaśasvinī
dharmam kṛtvā bahuvidham tridive paryavasthitā
12. sumitrā api anviyāya ca yaśasvinī kaikeyī
bahuvidham dharmam kṛtvā tridive paryavasthitā
12. Sumitrā also followed (i.e., passed away), and the renowned Kaikeyī, having performed many kinds of righteous actions (dharma), came to reside in heaven.
सर्वाः प्रतिष्ठिताः स्वर्गे राज्ञा दशरथेन च ।
समागता महाभागाः सह धर्मं च लेभिरे ॥१३॥
13. sarvāḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ svarge rājñā daśarathena ca ,
samāgatā mahābhāgāḥ saha dharmaṃ ca lebhire.
13. sarvāḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ svarge rājñā daśarathena ca
samāgatāḥ mahābhāgāḥ saha dharmam ca lebhire
13. mahābhāgāḥ rājñā daśarathena svarge pratiṣṭhitāḥ

13. All those highly fortunate ones, established in heaven by King Daśaratha, having gathered together, also attained their intrinsic nature (dharma).
तासां रामो महादानं काले काले प्रयच्छति ।
मातॄणामविशेषेण ब्राह्मणेषु तपस्विषु ॥१४॥
14. tāsāṃ rāmo mahādānaṃ kāle kāle prayacchati ,
mātṝṇāmaviśeṣeṇa brāhmaṇeṣu tapasviṣu.
14. tāsām rāmaḥ mahādānam kāle kāle prayacchati
mātṝṇām aviśeṣeṇa brāhmaṇeṣu tapasviṣu
14. rāmaḥ tāsām mātṝṇām brāhmaṇeṣu tapasviṣu
aviśeṣeṇa kāle kāle mahādānam prayacchati
14. Rāma gives great gifts from time to time to those mothers, especially to Brahmins and ascetics.
पित्र्याणि बहुरत्नानि यज्ञान्परमदुस्तरान् ।
चकार रामो धर्मात्मा पितॄन्देवान् विवर्धयन् ॥१५॥
15. pitryāṇi bahuratnāni yajñānparamadustarān ,
cakāra rāmo dharmātmā pitṝndevān vivardhayan.

15. The righteous (dharma) Rāma performed ancestral (Vedic rituals) yajñas, which were rich in many treasures and extremely difficult to accomplish, thereby promoting his ancestors and the gods.
