अथाश्रमादुपावृत्तमन्तरा रघुनन्दनः ।
परिपप्रच्छ सौमित्रिं रामो दुःखार्दितः पुनः ॥१॥
1. athāśramādupāvṛttamantarā raghunandanaḥ ,
paripapraccha saumitriṃ rāmo duḥkhārditaḥ punaḥ.

1. Then, Rama, the delight of the Raghus, greatly afflicted by sorrow, again questioned Lakshmana, who had returned from the hermitage (āśrama).
तमुवाच किमर्थं त्वमागतो ऽपास्य मैथिलीम् ।
यदा सा तव विश्वासाद्वने विहरिता मया ॥२॥
2. tamuvāca kimarthaṃ tvamāgato'pāsya maithilīm ,
yadā sā tava viśvāsādvane viharitā mayā.
2. tam uvāca kimartham tvam āgataḥ apāsya maithilīm
yadā sā tava viśvāsāt vane viharitā mayā

2. (Rama) said to him (Lakshmana): "Why have you come, abandoning Maithili (Sītā), when I entrusted her to your care in the forest, relying on your trust?"
दृष्ट्वैवाभ्यागतं त्वां मे मैथिलीं त्यज्य लक्ष्मण ।
शङ्कमानं महत् पापं यत् सत्यं व्यथितं मनः ॥३॥
3. dṛṣṭvaivābhyāgataṃ tvāṃ me maithilīṃ tyajya lakṣmaṇa ,
śaṅkamānaṃ mahat pāpaṃ yat satyaṃ vyathitaṃ manaḥ.
3. dṛṣṭvā eva abhyāgatam tvām me maithilīm tyajya lakṣmaṇa
śaṅkamānam mahat pāpam yat satyam vyathitam manaḥ
3. lakṣmaṇa,
maithilīm tyajya tvām abhyāgatam dṛṣṭvā eva,
me manaḥ mahat pāpam śaṅkamānam,
yat satyam vyathitam.
3. O Lakshmana, upon seeing you arrive after abandoning Maithili (Sītā), my mind is truly distressed, apprehending some great misfortune.
स्फुरते नयनं सव्यं बाहुश्च हृदयं च मे ।
दृष्ट्वा लक्ष्मण दूरे त्वां सीताविरहितं पथि ॥४॥
4. sphurate nayanaṃ savyaṃ bāhuśca hṛdayaṃ ca me ,
dṛṣṭvā lakṣmaṇa dūre tvāṃ sītāvirahitaṃ pathi.
4. sphurate nayanam savyam bāhuḥ ca hṛdayam ca me
dṛṣṭvā lakṣmaṇa dūre tvām sītāvirahitam pathi
4. lakṣmaṇa,
dūre pātī sītāvirahitam tvām dṛṣṭvā,
me savyam nayanam ca bāhuḥ ca hṛdayam ca sphurate
4. O Lakshmana, seeing you from afar on the path, separated from Sītā, my left eye, arm, and heart all throb.
एवमुक्तस्तु सौमित्रिर्लक्ष्मणः शुभलक्षणः ।
भूयो दुःखसमाविष्टो दुःखितं राममब्रवीत् ॥५॥
5. evamuktastu saumitrirlakṣmaṇaḥ śubhalakṣaṇaḥ ,
bhūyo duḥkhasamāviṣṭo duḥkhitaṃ rāmamabravīt.
5. evam uktaḥ tu saumitriḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ śubhalakṣaṇaḥ
bhūyaḥ duḥkhasamāviṣṭaḥ duḥkhitam rāmam abravīt
5. evam uktaḥ tu śubhalakṣaṇaḥ saumitriḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ
bhūyaḥ duḥkhasamāviṣṭaḥ duḥkhitam rāmam abravīt
5. Thus addressed, Lakṣmaṇa, the auspiciously marked son of Sumitrā, became again overwhelmed with sorrow and spoke to the sorrowful Rāma.
न स्वयं कामकारेण तां त्यक्त्वाहमिहागतः ।
प्रचोदितस्तयैवोग्रैस्त्वत्सकाशमिहागतः ॥६॥
6. na svayaṃ kāmakāreṇa tāṃ tyaktvāhamihāgataḥ ,
pracoditastayaivograistvatsakāśamihāgataḥ.
6. na svayam kāmakāreṇa tām tyaktvā aham iha āgataḥ
pracoditaḥ tayā eva ugraiḥ tvat sakāśam iha āgataḥ
6. aham na svayam kāmakāreṇa tām tyaktvā iha āgataḥ tayā
eva ugraiḥ (vākyaiḥ) pracoditaḥ tvat sakāśam iha āgataḥ
6. I did not come here of my own accord, having abandoned her. I was compelled by her alone, by her harsh words, and thus I have come here to your presence.
आर्येणेव परिक्रुष्टं हा सीते लक्ष्मणेति च ।
परित्राहीति यद्वाक्यं मैथिल्यास्तच्छ्रुतिं गतम् ॥७॥
7. āryeṇeva parikruṣṭaṃ hā sīte lakṣmaṇeti ca ,
paritrāhīti yadvākyaṃ maithilyāstacchrutiṃ gatam.
7. āryeṇa eva parikruṣṭam hā sīte lakṣmaṇa iti ca
paritrāhi iti yat vākyam maithilyāḥ tat śrutim gatam
7. āryeṇa eva (kṛtam) parikruṣṭam 'hā sīte lakṣmaṇa' iti ca,
'paritrāhi' iti yat vākyam (āśīḥ),
tat maithilyāḥ śrutim gatam
7. A cry, like that of the noble one (Rāma) himself, 'Oh Sītā! Oh Lakṣmaṇa!' and 'Protect me!' – that very statement (from the false Rāma) reached the ears of Maithilī (Sītā).
सा तमार्तस्वरं श्रुत्वा तव स्नेहेन मैथिली ।
गच्छ गच्छेति मामाह रुदन्ती भयविह्वला ॥८॥
8. sā tamārtasvaraṃ śrutvā tava snehena maithilī ,
gaccha gaccheti māmāha rudantī bhayavihvalā.
8. sā tam ārtasvaram śrutvā tava snehena maithilī
gaccha gaccha iti mām āha rudantī bhayavihvalā
8. sā maithilī tava snehena (yuktā) tam ārtasvaram śrutvā
bhayavihvalā rudantī 'gaccha gaccha' iti mām āha
8. Having heard that distressed sound, Maithilī (Sītā), out of love for you (Rāma), became overwhelmed with fear and, weeping, said to me, 'Go! Go!'
प्रचोद्यमानेन मया गच्छेति बहुशस्तया ।
प्रत्युक्ता मैथिली वाक्यमिदं त्वत्प्रत्ययान्वितम् ॥९॥
9. pracodyamānena mayā gaccheti bahuśastayā ,
pratyuktā maithilī vākyamidaṃ tvatpratyayānvitam.
9. prachodyamānena mayā gaccha iti bahuśaḥ tayā
pratyuktā maithilī vākyam idam tvatpratyayānvitam
9. mayā bahuśaḥ gaccha iti prachodyamānena tayā
maithilī idam tvatpratyayānvitam vākyam pratyuktā
9. Repeatedly urged by me with the command 'Go!', Sītā (Maithilī) replied with these words, which were full of confidence in you (Rāma).
न तत् पश्याम्यहं रक्षो यदस्य भयमावहेत् ।
निर्वृता भव नास्त्येतत् केनाप्येवमुदाहृतम् ॥१०॥
10. na tat paśyāmyahaṃ rakṣo yadasya bhayamāvahet ,
nirvṛtā bhava nāstyetat kenāpyevamudāhṛtam.
10. na tat paśyāmi aham rakṣaḥ yat asya bhayam āvahet
nirvṛtā bhava na asti etat kena api evam udāhṛtam
10. aham tat rakṣaḥ na paśyāmi yat asya bhayam āvahet.
nirvṛtā bhava.
etat na asti.
kena api evam udāhṛtam.
10. I do not see any demon (rakṣas) that could bring fear to this (area/person). Be calm. Such a thing (as this fear) does not exist, and it has not been declared by anyone to exist in this manner.
विगर्हितं च नीचं च कथमार्यो ऽभिधास्यति ।
त्राहीति वचनं सीते यस्त्रायेत्त्रिदशानपि ॥११॥
11. vigarhitaṃ ca nīcaṃ ca kathamāryo'bhidhāsyati ,
trāhīti vacanaṃ sīte yastrāyettridaśānapi.
11. vigarhitam ca nīcam ca katham āryaḥ abhidhāsyati
trāhi iti vacanam sīte yaḥ trāyet tridaśān api
11. sīte yaḥ tridaśān api trāyet āryaḥ katham vigarhitam
ca nīcam ca trāhi iti vacanam abhidhāsyati
11. O Sītā, how could a noble person (ārya) - one who would protect even the gods - utter such a censurable and base cry as 'Protect (trāhi) me!'?
किंनिमित्तं तु केनापि भ्रातुरालम्ब्य मे स्वरम् ।
विस्वरं व्याहृतं वाक्यं लक्ष्मण त्राहि मामिति ।
न भवत्या व्यथा कार्या कुनारीजनसेविता ॥१२॥
12. kiṃnimittaṃ tu kenāpi bhrāturālambya me svaram ,
visvaraṃ vyāhṛtaṃ vākyaṃ lakṣmaṇa trāhi māmiti ,
na bhavatyā vyathā kāryā kunārījanasevitā.
12. kimnimittam tu kena api bhrātuḥ
ālambya me svaram visvaram vyāhṛtam
vākyam lakṣmaṇa trāhi mām iti na
bhavatyā vyathā kāryā kunārījanasevitā
12. tu kena api me bhrātuḥ svaram ālambya kimnimittam visvaram lakṣmaṇa mām trāhi iti vākyam vyāhṛtam? bhavatyā kunārījanasevitā vyathā na kāryā.
12. But for what reason would anyone, imitating my brother's voice, utter such a discordant statement as 'O Lakṣmaṇa, protect me!'? You (Sītā) should not give in to such anxiety, which is characteristic of wicked women.
अलं वैक्लव्यमालम्ब्य स्वस्था भव निरुत्सुका ।
न चास्ति त्रिषु लोकेषु पुमान्यो राघवं रणे ।
जातो वा जायमानो वा संयुगे यः पराजयेत् ॥१३॥
13. alaṃ vaiklavyamālambya svasthā bhava nirutsukā ,
na cāsti triṣu lokeṣu pumānyo rāghavaṃ raṇe ,
jāto vā jāyamāno vā saṃyuge yaḥ parājayet.
13. alam vaiklavyam ālambya svasthā
bhava nirutsukā na ca asti triṣu lokeṣu
pumān yaḥ rāghavam raṇe jātaḥ
vā jāyamānaḥ vā saṃyuge yaḥ parājayet
13. vailkavyam ālambya alam svasthā
nirutsukā bhava ca triṣu lokeṣu pumān
na asti yaḥ jātaḥ vā jāyamānaḥ vā
saṃyuge raṇe rāghavam yaḥ parājayet
13. Enough of dwelling in dejection; become self-possessed and free from anxiety. There is no man in the three worlds, whether already born or yet to be born, who could defeat Rāghava in battle.
एवमुक्ता तु वैदेही परिमोहितचेतना ।
उवाचाश्रूणि मुञ्चन्ती दारुणं मामिदं वचः ॥१४॥
14. evamuktā tu vaidehī parimohitacetanā ,
uvācāśrūṇi muñcantī dāruṇaṃ māmidaṃ vacaḥ.
14. evam uktā tu vaidehī parimohitacetanā uvāca
aśrūṇi muñcantī dāruṇam mām idam vacaḥ
14. evam uktā tu parimohitacetanā vaidehī aśrūṇi
muñcantī mām idam dāruṇam vacaḥ uvāca
14. But Vaidehī (Sītā), thus addressed and with her consciousness completely bewildered, spoke these harsh words to me while shedding tears.
भावो मयि तवात्यर्थं पाप एव निवेशितः ।
विनष्टे भ्रातरि प्राप्ते न च त्वं मामवाप्स्यसि ॥१५॥
15. bhāvo mayi tavātyarthaṃ pāpa eva niveśitaḥ ,
vinaṣṭe bhrātari prāpte na ca tvaṃ māmavāpsyasi.
15. bhāvaḥ mayi tava atyartham pāpaḥ eva niveśitaḥ
vinaṣṭe bhrātari prāpte na ca tvam mām avāpsyasi
15. tava bhāvaḥ mayi atyartham pāpaḥ eva niveśitaḥ
bhrātari vinaṣṭe prāpte ca tvam mām na avāpsyasi
15. Your intention towards me is exceedingly sinful, indeed, it has been fixed upon me. Even if your brother perishes, you will not obtain me.
संकेताद्भरतेन त्वं रामं समनुगच्छसि ।
क्रोशन्तं हि यथात्यर्थं नैनमभ्यवपद्यसे ॥१६॥
16. saṃketādbharatena tvaṃ rāmaṃ samanugacchasi ,
krośantaṃ hi yathātyarthaṃ nainamabhyavapadyase.
16. saṃketāt bharatena tvam rāmam samanugacchasi
krośantam hi yathā atyartham na enam abhyavapadyase
16. tvam bharatena saṃketāt rāmam samanugacchasi hi
enam krośantam atyartham yathā na abhyavapadyase
16. It is by a secret understanding (saṃketa) with Bharata that you are following Rāma. For you are not approaching and helping him, even though he is crying out exceedingly.
रिपुः प्रच्छन्नचारी त्वं मदर्थमनुगच्छसि ।
राघवस्यान्तरप्रेप्सुस्तथैनं नाभिपद्यसे ॥१७॥
17. ripuḥ pracchannacārī tvaṃ madarthamanugacchasi ,
rāghavasyāntaraprepsustathainaṃ nābhipadyase.
17. ripuḥ pracchannacārī tvam madartham anugacchasi
rāghavasya antaraprepsuḥ tathā enam na abhipadyase
17. tvam pracchannacārī ripuḥ madartham anugacchasi
rāghavasya antaraprepsuḥ tathā enam na abhipadyase
17. You, a hidden enemy, follow me for your own gain, seeking to find a vulnerability in Rāghava (Rama), yet you do not confront him.
एवमुक्तो हि वैदेह्या संरब्धो रक्तलोचनः ।
क्रोधात् प्रस्फुरमाणौष्ठ आश्रमादभिनिर्गतः ॥१८॥
18. evamukto hi vaidehyā saṃrabdho raktalocanaḥ ,
krodhāt prasphuramāṇauṣṭha āśramādabhinirgataḥ.
18. evam uktaḥ hi vaidehyā saṃrabdhaḥ raktalocanaḥ
krodhāt prasphuramāṇauṣṭhaḥ āśramāt abhinirgataḥ
18. hi vaidehyā evam uktaḥ saḥ saṃrabdhaḥ raktalocanaḥ
krodhāt prasphuramāṇauṣṭhaḥ āśramāt abhinirgataḥ
18. Indeed, thus addressed by the princess of Videha (Sītā), he, enraged, with red eyes, and trembling lips due to anger, departed from the hermitage (āśrama).
एवं ब्रुवाणं सौमित्रिं रामः संतापमोहितः ।
अब्रवीद्दुष्कृतं सौम्य तां विना यत्त्वमागतः ॥१९॥
19. evaṃ bruvāṇaṃ saumitriṃ rāmaḥ saṃtāpamohitaḥ ,
abravīdduṣkṛtaṃ saumya tāṃ vinā yattvamāgataḥ.
19. evam bruvāṇam saumitrim rāmaḥ saṃtāpamohitaḥ
abravīt duṣkṛtam saumya tām vinā yat tvam āgataḥ
19. saṃtāpamohitaḥ rāmaḥ evam bruvāṇam saumitrim
abravīt saumya tvam tām vinā yat āgataḥ duṣkṛtam
19. Rama, overwhelmed by distress, spoke to Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), who was speaking thus: 'O gentle one, it is a great wrong (duṣkṛtam) that you have come without her!'
जानन्नपि समर्थं मां रक्षसां विनिवारणे ।
अनेन क्रोधवाक्येन मैथिल्या निःसृतो भवान् ॥२०॥
20. jānannapi samarthaṃ māṃ rakṣasāṃ vinivāraṇe ,
anena krodhavākyena maithilyā niḥsṛto bhavān.
20. jānan api samartham mām rakṣasām vinivāraṇe
anena krodhavākyena maithilyāḥ niḥsṛtaḥ bhavān
20. bhavān rakṣasām vinivāraṇe mām samartham jānan
api anena maithilyāḥ krodhavākyena niḥsṛtaḥ
20. Though knowing me capable in repelling demons (rakṣas), you have departed at the instigation of Maitheli's (Sītā's) angry words.
न हि ते परितुष्यामि त्यक्त्वा यद् यासि मैथिलीम् ।
क्रुद्धायाः परुषं श्रुत्वा स्त्रिया यत्त्वमिहागतः ॥२१॥
21. na hi te parituṣyāmi tyaktvā yad yāsi maithilīm ,
kruddhāyāḥ paruṣaṃ śrutvā striyā yattvamihāgataḥ.
21. na hi te parituṣyāmi tyaktvā yat yāsi maithilīm
kruddhāyāḥ paruṣam śrutvā striyā yat tvam iha āgataḥ
21. hi te na parituṣyāmi yat maithilīm tyaktvā yāsi,
yat kruddhāyāḥ striyāḥ paruṣam śrutvā tvam iha āgataḥ
21. Indeed, I am not pleased with you for leaving Maithili (Sītā) and coming here, instigated by the harsh words of an angry woman.
सर्वथा त्वपनीतं ते सीतया यत् प्रचोदितः ।
क्रोधस्य वशमागम्य नाकरोः शासनं मम ॥२२॥
22. sarvathā tvapanītaṃ te sītayā yat pracoditaḥ ,
krodhasya vaśamāgamya nākaroḥ śāsanaṃ mama.
22. sarvathā tu apanītam te sītayā yat pracoditaḥ
krodhasya vaśam āgamya na akaroḥ śāsanam mama
22. sarvathā tu te apanītam,
yat sītayā pracoditaḥ.
krodhasya vaśam āgamya mama śāsanam na akaroḥ
22. This was entirely improper of you, to be instigated by Sītā. Having succumbed to the control of anger, you did not follow my command.
असौ हि राक्षसः शेते शरेणाभिहतो मया ।
मृगरूपेण येनाहमाश्रमादपवादितः ॥२३॥
23. asau hi rākṣasaḥ śete śareṇābhihato mayā ,
mṛgarūpeṇa yenāhamāśramādapavāditaḥ.
23. asau hi rākṣasaḥ śete śareṇa abhihataḥ mayā
mṛgarūpeṇa yena aham āśramāt apavāditaḥ
23. hi asau rākṣasaḥ,
mayā śareṇa abhihataḥ,
śete.
yena mṛgarūpeṇa aham āśramāt apavāditaḥ
23. Indeed, this demon lies dead, struck by my arrow. It was by him, in the form of a deer, that I was lured away from the hermitage.
विकृष्य चापं परिधाय सायकं सलील बाणेन च ताडितो मया ।
मार्गीं तनुं त्यज्य च विक्लवस्वरो बभूव केयूरधरः स राक्षसः ॥२४॥
24. vikṛṣya cāpaṃ paridhāya sāyakaṃ salīla bāṇena ca tāḍito mayā ,
mārgīṃ tanuṃ tyajya ca viklavasvaro babhūva keyūradharaḥ sa rākṣasaḥ.
24. vikṛṣya cāpam paridhāya sāyakam
salīla bāṇena ca tāḍitaḥ mayā
mārgīm tanum tyajya ca viklavasvaraḥ
babhūva keyūradharaḥ sa rākṣasaḥ
24. cāpam vikṛṣya,
sāyakam paridhāya,
ca mayā salīla bāṇena tāḍitaḥ,
ca mārgīm tanum tyajya,
sa rākṣasaḥ viklavasvaraḥ keyūradharaḥ babhūva
24. Having drawn my bow and fitted an arrow, and then struck by my arrow with ease, that demon, abandoning his deer form, cried out in distress and transformed into that armlet-wearing demon.
शराहतेनैव तदार्तया गिरा स्वरं ममालम्ब्य सुदूरसंश्रवम् ।
उदाहृतं तद्वचनं सुदारुणं त्वमागतो येन विहाय मैथिलीम् ॥२५॥
25. śarāhatenaiva tadārtayā girā svaraṃ mamālambya sudūrasaṃśravam ,
udāhṛtaṃ tadvacanaṃ sudāruṇaṃ tvamāgato yena vihāya maithilīm.
25. śara āhatena eva tat ārtayā girā
svaram mama ālambya sudūrasaṃśravam
udāhṛtam tat vacanam sudāruṇam
tvam āgataḥ yena vihāya maithilīm
25. śara āhatena eva,
mama sudūrasaṃśravam svaram ālambya,
tat ārtayā girā sudāruṇam vacanam udāhṛtam.
yena tvam maithilīm vihāya āgataḥ.
25. Indeed, he who was struck by an arrow, mimicking my voice - a sound audible from a great distance - uttered that extremely terrible statement with a distressed cry. It was because of this that you came, abandoning Maithili (Sita).
