तां तु शूर्पणखां रामः कामपाशावपाशिताम् ।
स्वेच्छया श्लक्ष्णया वाचा स्मितपूर्वमथाब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. tāṃ tu śūrpaṇakhāṃ rāmaḥ kāmapāśāvapāśitām ,

1. Then, Rama, with a gentle voice, preceded by a smile, intentionally spoke to that Shurpanakha, who was completely ensnared by the bonds of desire.
कृतदारो ऽस्मि भवति भार्येयं दयिता मम ।
त्वद्विधानां तु नारीणां सुदुःखा ससपत्नता ॥२॥
2. kṛtadāro'smi bhavati bhāryeyaṃ dayitā mama ,
tvadvidhānāṃ tu nārīṇāṃ suduḥkhā sasapatnatā.
2. kṛtadāraḥ asmi bhavati bhāryā iyam dayitā mama
tvat-vidhānām tu nārīṇām suduḥkhā sasapatnatā

2. O lady, I am already married, and this is my beloved wife. Indeed, for women of your kind, the state of having co-wives is extremely distressing.
अनुजस्त्वेष मे भ्राता शीलवान्प्रियदर्शनः ।
श्रीमानकृतदारश्च लक्ष्मणो नाम वीर्यवान् ॥३॥
3. anujastveṣa me bhrātā śīlavānpriyadarśanaḥ ,
śrīmānakṛtadāraśca lakṣmaṇo nāma vīryavān.
3. anujaḥ tu eṣaḥ me bhrātā śīlavān priyadarśanaḥ
śrīmān akṛtadāraḥ ca lakṣmaṇaḥ nāma vīryavān
3. eṣaḥ tu me bhrātā anujaḥ śīlavān priyadarśanaḥ
śrīmān ca akṛtadāraḥ nāma lakṣmaṇaḥ vīryavān
3. This, indeed, is my younger brother, Lakshmana by name, who is virtuous, pleasant to behold, glorious, and mighty; and he is unmarried.
अपूर्वी भार्यया चार्थी तरुणः प्रियदर्शनः ।
अनुरूपश्च ते भर्ता रूपस्यास्य भविष्यति ॥४॥
4. apūrvī bhāryayā cārthī taruṇaḥ priyadarśanaḥ ,
anurūpaśca te bhartā rūpasyāsya bhaviṣyati.
4. apūrvī bhāryayā ca arthī taruṇaḥ priyadarśanaḥ
anurūpaḥ ca te bhartā rūpasya asya bhaviṣyati

4. He is without a previous wife and seeks a wife; he is young and pleasant to behold. He would indeed be a suitable husband for your beauty.
एनं भज विशालाक्षि भर्तारं भ्रातरं मम ।
असपत्ना वरारोहे मेरुमर्कप्रभा यथा ॥५॥
5. enaṃ bhaja viśālākṣi bhartāraṃ bhrātaraṃ mama ,
asapatnā varārohe merumarkaprabhā yathā.
5. enam bhaja viśālākṣi bhartāraṃ bhrātaraṃ mama
asapatnā varārohe merum arkaprabhā yathā

5. O wide-eyed one, serve him, my brother, as your unrivaled husband, O lady of beautiful thighs, just as the sun's radiance belongs to Mount Meru.
इति रामेण सा प्रोक्ता राक्षसी काममोहिता ।
विसृज्य रामं सहसा ततो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. iti rāmeṇa sā proktā rākṣasī kāmamohitā ,
visṛjya rāmaṃ sahasā tato lakṣmaṇamabravīt.
6. iti rāmeṇa sā proktā rākṣasī kāmamohitā
visṛjya rāmaṃ sahasā tataḥ lakṣmaṇam abravīt
6. iti sā rākṣasī kāmamohitā rāmeṇa proktā

6. Thus addressed by Rāma, the ogress, infatuated by desire, quickly left Rāma and then spoke to Lakṣmaṇa.
अस्य रूपस्य ते युक्ता भार्याहं वरवर्णिनी ।
मया सह सुखं सर्वान्दण्डकान् विचरिष्यसि ॥७॥
7. asya rūpasya te yuktā bhāryāhaṃ varavarṇinī ,
mayā saha sukhaṃ sarvāndaṇḍakān vicariṣyasi.
7. asya rūpasya te yuktā bhāryā aham varavarṇinī
mayā saha sukhaṃ sarvān daṇḍakān vicariṣyasi
7. varavarṇinī aham te asya rūpasya yuktā bhāryā
mayā saha sukhaṃ sarvān daṇḍakān vicariṣyasi
7. O fair-complexioned one, I am a fitting wife for your beauty. With me, you will happily wander through all of the Daṇḍaka forest.
एवमुक्तस्तु सौमित्री राक्षस्या वाक्यकोविदः ।
ततः शूर्पणखीं स्मित्वा लक्ष्मणो युक्तमब्रवीत् ॥८॥
8. evamuktastu saumitrī rākṣasyā vākyakovidaḥ ,
tataḥ śūrpaṇakhīṃ smitvā lakṣmaṇo yuktamabravīt.
8. evam uktaḥ tu saumitriḥ rākṣasyā vākyakovidaḥ
tataḥ śūrpaṇakhīṃ smitvā lakṣmaṇaḥ yuktam abravīt
8. evam rākṣasyā uktaḥ tu saumitriḥ vākyakovidaḥ
tataḥ smitvā lakṣmaṇaḥ śūrpaṇakhīṃ yuktam abravīt
8. Thus addressed by the ogress, Lakṣmaṇa, the son of Sumitrā, who was skilled in speech, then smiled and spoke appropriately to Śūrpaṇakhā.
कथं दासस्य मे दासी भार्या भवितुमिच्छसि ।
सो ऽहमार्येण परवान्भ्रात्रा कमलवर्णिनी ॥९॥
9. kathaṃ dāsasya me dāsī bhāryā bhavitumicchasi ,
so'hamāryeṇa paravānbhrātrā kamalavarṇinī.
9. katham dāsasya me dāsī bhāryā bhavitum icchasi
saḥ aham āryeṇa paravān bhrātrā kamalavarṇinī
9. kamalavarṇinī katham dāsasya me dāsī bhāryā
bhavitum icchasi saḥ aham āryeṇa bhrātrā paravān
9. O lotus-complexioned one (kamalavarṇinī), how do you, a female servant, desire to become the wife of me, a servant? I am entirely subordinate to my noble brother.
समृद्धार्थस्य सिद्धार्था मुदितामलवर्णिनी ।
आर्यस्य त्वं विशालाक्षि भार्या भव यवीयसी ॥१०॥
10. samṛddhārthasya siddhārthā muditāmalavarṇinī ,
āryasya tvaṃ viśālākṣi bhāryā bhava yavīyasī.
10. samṛddhārthasya siddhārthā muditāmalavarṇinī
āryasya tvam viśālākṣi bhāryā bhava yavīyasī
10. muditāmalavarṇinī viśālākṣi siddhārthā tvam
samṛddhārthasya āryasya bhāryā bhava aham yavīyasī
10. O joyful, pure-complexioned one (muditāmalavarṇinī)! O broad-eyed one (viśālākṣi)! You, whose aims are fulfilled, become the wife of the noble one (ārya) whose aims are accomplished. I am the younger (brother).
एतां विरूपामसतीं करालां निर्णतोदरीम् ।
भार्यां वृद्धां परित्यज्य त्वामेवैष भजिष्यति ॥११॥
11. etāṃ virūpāmasatīṃ karālāṃ nirṇatodarīm ,
bhāryāṃ vṛddhāṃ parityajya tvāmevaiṣa bhajiṣyati.
11. etām virūpām asatīm karālām nirṇatodarīm bhāryām
vṛddhām parityajya tvām eva eṣaḥ bhajiṣyati
11. eṣaḥ etām virūpām asatīm karālām nirṇatodarīm
vṛddhām bhāryām parityajya tvām eva bhajiṣyati
11. Having abandoned his ugly, unchaste, terrifying, emaciated, old wife, he (Lakshmana) will certainly seek you alone.
को हि रूपमिदं श्रेष्ठं संत्यज्य वरवर्णिनि ।
मानुषेषु वरारोहे कुर्याद्भावं विचक्षणः ॥१२॥
12. ko hi rūpamidaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ saṃtyajya varavarṇini ,
mānuṣeṣu varārohe kuryādbhāvaṃ vicakṣaṇaḥ.
12. kaḥ hi rūpam idam śreṣṭham saṃtyajya varavarṇini
mānuṣeṣu varārohe kuryāt bhāvam vicakṣaṇaḥ
12. varavarṇini varārohe kaḥ vicakṣaṇaḥ hi idam
śreṣṭham rūpam saṃtyajya mānuṣeṣu bhāvam kuryāt
12. O fair-complexioned one (varavarṇinī)! O beautiful-hipped one (varārohe)! What discerning person (vicakṣaṇaḥ) indeed, would abandon this supreme beauty (such as yours) and develop affection for other human women?
इति सा लक्ष्मणेनोक्ता कराला निर्णतोदरी ।
मन्यते तद्वचः सत्यं परिहासाविचक्षणा ॥१३॥
13. iti sā lakṣmaṇenoktā karālā nirṇatodarī ,
manyate tadvacaḥ satyaṃ parihāsāvicakṣaṇā.
13. iti sā lakṣmaṇena uktā karālā nirṇatodarī
manyate tat vacaḥ satyam parihāsāvicakṣaṇā
13. sā karālā nirṇatodarī lakṣmaṇena uktā iti
tat vacaḥ satyam manyate parihāsāvicakṣaṇā
13. Thus, that hideous one with a sunken belly, having been addressed by Lakshmana, believed his words to be true, as she lacked discernment regarding jests.
सा रामं पर्णशालायामुपविष्टं परंतपम् ।
सीतया सह दुर्धर्षमब्रवीत् काममोहिता ॥१४॥
14. sā rāmaṃ parṇaśālāyāmupaviṣṭaṃ paraṃtapam ,
sītayā saha durdharṣamabravīt kāmamohitā.
14. sā rāmam parṇaśālāyām upaviṣṭam paraṃtapam
sītayā saha durdharṣam abravīt kāmamohitā
14. sā kāmamohitā rāmam paraṃtapam durdharṣam
sītayā saha parṇaśālāyām upaviṣṭam abravīt
14. Deluded by desire (kāma), she addressed Rama, the tormentor of enemies, who was formidable and seated in the leaf-hut with Sita.
इमां विरूपामसतीं करालां निर्णतोदरीम् ।
वृद्धां भार्यामवष्टभ्य न मां त्वं बहु मन्यसे ॥१५॥
15. imāṃ virūpāmasatīṃ karālāṃ nirṇatodarīm ,
vṛddhāṃ bhāryāmavaṣṭabhya na māṃ tvaṃ bahu manyase.
15. imām virūpām asatīm karālām nirṇatodarīm vṛddhām
bhāryām avaṣṭabhya na mām tvam bahu manyase
15. tvam imām virūpām asatīm karālām nirṇatodarīm
vṛddhām bhāryām avaṣṭabhya mām bahu na manyase
15. Because you cherish this ugly, unchaste, dreadful, emaciated, old wife, you do not value me highly.
अद्येमां भक्षयिष्यामि पश्यतस्तव मानुषीम् ।
त्वया सह चरिष्यामि निःसपत्ना यथासुखम् ॥१६॥
16. adyemāṃ bhakṣayiṣyāmi paśyatastava mānuṣīm ,
tvayā saha cariṣyāmi niḥsapatnā yathāsukham.
16. adya imām bhakṣayiṣyāmi paśyataḥ tava mānuṣīm
tvayā saha cariṣyāmi niḥsapatnā yathāsukham
16. adya tava paśyataḥ imām mānuṣīm bhakṣayiṣyāmi
niḥsapatnā tvayā saha yathāsukham cariṣyāmi
16. Today, I will devour this human (woman) in your sight. Then, free from rivals, I will enjoy roaming with you as I please.
इत्युक्त्वा मृगशावाक्षीमलातसदृशेक्षणा ।
अभ्यधावत् सुसंक्रुद्धा महोल्का रोहिणीमिव ॥१७॥
17. ityuktvā mṛgaśāvākṣīmalātasadṛśekṣaṇā ,
abhyadhāvat susaṃkruddhā maholkā rohiṇīmiva.
17. iti uktvā mṛgaśāvākṣīm alātasadṛśekṣaṇā
abhyadhāvat susaṃkruddhā maholkā rohiṇīm iva
17. iti uktvā alātasadṛśekṣaṇā susaṃkruddhā
mṛgaśāvākṣīm abhyadhāvat maholkā rohiṇīm iva
17. Having spoken thus, she (Śūrpaṇakhā), whose eyes were like glowing firebrands, exceedingly enraged, rushed towards the fawn-eyed Sītā, just like a great meteor (maholkā) races towards the star Rohiṇī.
तां मृत्युपाशप्रतिमामापतन्तीं महाबलः ।
निगृह्य रामः कुपितस्ततो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. tāṃ mṛtyupāśapratimāmāpatantīṃ mahābalaḥ ,
nigṛhya rāmaḥ kupitastato lakṣmaṇamabravīt.
18. tām mṛtyupāśapratimām āpatantīm mahābalaḥ
nigṛhya rāmaḥ kupitaḥ tataḥ lakṣmaṇam abravīt
18. tataḥ mahābalaḥ rāmaḥ kupitaḥ mṛtyupāśapratimām
āpatantīm tām nigṛhya lakṣmaṇam abravīt
18. Then, the exceedingly strong Rāma, enraged, seized her (Śūrpaṇakhā) as she advanced, resembling a noose of death, and spoke to Lakṣmaṇa.
क्रूरैरनार्यैः सौमित्रे परिहासः कथं चन ।
न कार्यः पश्य वैदेहीं कथं चित् सौम्य जीवतीम् ॥१९॥
19. krūrairanāryaiḥ saumitre parihāsaḥ kathaṃ cana ,
na kāryaḥ paśya vaidehīṃ kathaṃ cit saumya jīvatīm.
19. krūraiḥ anāryaiḥ saumitre parihāsaḥ katham cana na
kāryaḥ paśya vaidehīm katham cit saumya jīvatīm
19. saumitre saumya krūraiḥ anāryaiḥ parihāsaḥ katham
cana na kāryaḥ vaidehīm katham cit jīvatīm paśya
19. O Saumitra (Lakṣmaṇa), one should never jest with cruel and ignoble beings. Look, O gentle one, how Vaidehī (Sītā) is still alive somehow.
इमां विरूपामसतीमतिमत्तां महोदरीम् ।
राक्षसीं पुरुषव्याघ्र विरूपयितुमर्हसि ॥२०॥
20. imāṃ virūpāmasatīmatimattāṃ mahodarīm ,
rākṣasīṃ puruṣavyāghra virūpayitumarhasi.
20. imām virūpām asatīm atimattām mahodarīm
rākṣasīm puruṣavyāghra virūpayitum arhasi
20. puruṣavyāghra imām virūpām asatīm atimattām
mahodarīm rākṣasīm virūpayitum arhasi
20. O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), you should disfigure this ugly, unchaste, utterly arrogant, large-bellied demoness.
इत्युक्तो लक्ष्मणस्तस्याः क्रुद्धो रामस्य पश्यतः ।
उद्धृत्य खड्गं चिच्छेद कर्णनासं महाबलः ॥२१॥
21. ityukto lakṣmaṇastasyāḥ kruddho rāmasya paśyataḥ ,
uddhṛtya khaḍgaṃ ciccheda karṇanāsaṃ mahābalaḥ.
21. iti uktaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ tasyāḥ kruddhaḥ rāmasya paśyataḥ
uddhṛtya khaḍgaṃ ciccheda karṇanāsam mahābalaḥ
21. iti uktaḥ kruddhaḥ mahābalaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ rāmasya
paśyataḥ tasyāḥ khaḍgam uddhṛtya karṇanāsam ciccheda
21. Thus spoken to, the mighty Lakṣmaṇa, enraged and with Rāma watching, drew his sword and cut off her ear and nose.
निकृत्तकर्णनासा तु विस्वरं सा विनद्य च ।
यथागतं प्रदुद्राव घोरा शूर्पणखा वनम् ॥२२॥
22. nikṛttakarṇanāsā tu visvaraṃ sā vinadya ca ,
yathāgataṃ pradudrāva ghorā śūrpaṇakhā vanam.
22. nikṛttakarṇanāsā tu visvaram sā vinadya ca
yathāgatam pradudrāva ghorā śūrpaṇakhā vanam
22. tu nikṛttakarṇanāsā ghorā sā śūrpaṇakhā
visvaram vinadya ca yathāgatam vanam pradudrāva
22. But the terrifying Śūrpaṇakhā, with her ear and nose cut off, let out a piercing scream and fled back to the forest the way she had come.
सा विरूपा महाघोरा राक्षसी शोणितोक्षिता ।
ननाद विविधान्नादान्यथा प्रावृषि तोयदः ॥२३॥
23. sā virūpā mahāghorā rākṣasī śoṇitokṣitā ,
nanāda vividhānnādānyathā prāvṛṣi toyadaḥ.
23. sā virūpā mahāghorā rākṣasī śoṇitokṣitā
nanāda vividhān nādān yathā prāvṛṣi toyadaḥ
23. sā virūpā mahāghorā śoṇitokṣitā rākṣasī
vividhān nādān nanāda yathā prāvṛṣi toyadaḥ
23. That disfigured, exceedingly terrifying demoness, drenched in blood, roared with various cries, just as a cloud thunders in the rainy season.
सा विक्षरन्ती रुधिरं बहुधा घोरदर्शना ।
प्रगृह्य बाहू गर्जन्ती प्रविवेश महावनम् ॥२४॥
24. sā vikṣarantī rudhiraṃ bahudhā ghoradarśanā ,
pragṛhya bāhū garjantī praviveśa mahāvanam.

pragṛhya bāhū garjantī praviveśa mahāvanam
24. sā rudhiram vikṣarantī bahudhā ghoradarśanā

24. She, profusely bleeding and presenting a terrifying sight, roaring and clasping her arms, entered the great forest.
ततस्तु सा राक्षससंघसंवृतं खरं जनस्थानगतं विरूपिता ।
उपेत्य तं भ्रातरमुग्रतेजसं पपात भूमौ गगनाद् यथाशनिः ॥२५॥
25. tatastu sā rākṣasasaṃghasaṃvṛtaṃ kharaṃ janasthānagataṃ virūpitā ,
upetya taṃ bhrātaramugratejasaṃ papāta bhūmau gaganād yathāśaniḥ.
25. tataḥ tu sā rākṣasasaṅghasaṃvṛtam
kharam janasthānagatam virūpitā
upetya tam bhrātaram ugratejasam
papāta bhūmau gaganāt yathā aśaniḥ
25. tataḥ virūpitā sā rākṣasasaṅghasaṃvṛtam
janasthānagatam ugratejasam

25. Then, having been disfigured, she approached her brother Khara, who was of fierce prowess and surrounded by a host of Rākṣasas in Janasthāna. She fell to the ground like a lightning bolt from the sky.
ततः सभार्यं भयमोहमूर्छिता सलक्ष्मणं राघवमागतं वनम् ।
विरूपणं चात्मनि शोणितोक्षिता शशंस सर्वं भगिनी खरस्य सा ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ sabhāryaṃ bhayamohamūrchitā salakṣmaṇaṃ rāghavamāgataṃ vanam ,
virūpaṇaṃ cātmani śoṇitokṣitā śaśaṃsa sarvaṃ bhaginī kharasya sā.
26. tataḥ sabhāryam bhayamohamūrcchitā
salakṣmaṇam rāghavam āgatam vanam
virūpaṇam ca ātmani śoṇitokṣitā
śaśaṃsa sarvam bhaginī kharasya sā
26. tataḥ bhayamohamūrcchitā śoṇitokṣitā
kharasya bhaginī sā sabhāryam
salakṣmaṇam vanam āgatam rāghavam
ātmani virūpaṇam ca sarvam śaśaṃsa
26. Then, that sister of Khara, drenched in blood and faint from fear and delusion, reported everything: how Rāghava (Rāma) had arrived in the forest with his wife and Lakṣmaṇa, and about her own disfigurement.
