1. Having spent that night, those Brahmins, who were masters of the Vedas, along with the royal priests, then approached the assembly place.
अमात्या बलमुख्याश्च मुख्या ये निगमस्य च ।
राघवस्याभिषेकार्थे प्रीयमाणास्तु संगताः ॥२॥
2. amātyā balamukhyāśca mukhyā ye nigamasya ca ,
rāghavasyābhiṣekārthe prīyamāṇāstu saṃgatāḥ.

2. Ministers, chief commanders, and also the prominent leaders of the guilds, all delighted, had assembled for the consecration (abhiṣeka) of Rāghava.
उदिते विमले सूर्ये पुष्ये चाभ्यागते ऽहनि ।
अभिषेकाय रामस्य द्विजेन्द्रैरुपकल्पितम् ॥३॥
3. udite vimale sūrye puṣye cābhyāgate'hani ,
abhiṣekāya rāmasya dvijendrairupakalpitam.

3. When the pure sun had risen and the day, marked by the Puṣya constellation, had arrived, everything was arranged by the chief brahmins for Rama's consecration.
काञ्चना जलकुम्भाश्च भद्रपीठं स्वलंकृतम् ।
रामश्च सम्यगास्तीर्णो भास्वरा व्याघ्रचर्मणा ॥४॥
4. kāñcanā jalakumbhāśca bhadrapīṭhaṃ svalaṃkṛtam ,
rāmaśca samyagāstīrṇo bhāsvarā vyāghracarmaṇā.

4. Golden water-pots and a well-decorated auspicious seat were prepared. And Rama was properly furnished with a shining tiger-skin.
गङ्गायमुनयोः पुण्यात् संगमादाहृतं जलम् ।
याश्चान्याः सरितः पुण्या ह्रदाः कूपाः सरांसि च ॥५॥
5. gaṅgāyamunayoḥ puṇyāt saṃgamādāhṛtaṃ jalam ,
yāścānyāḥ saritaḥ puṇyā hradāḥ kūpāḥ sarāṃsi ca.

5. Water was brought from the sacred confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna, and from whatever other sacred rivers, lakes, wells, and ponds there are.
प्राग्वाहाश्चोर्ध्ववाहाश्च तिर्यग्वाहाः समाहिताः ।
ताभ्यश्चैवाहृतं तोयं समुद्रेभ्यश्च सर्वशः ॥६॥
6. prāgvāhāścordhvavāhāśca tiryagvāhāḥ samāhitāḥ ,
tābhyaścaivāhṛtaṃ toyaṃ samudrebhyaśca sarvaśaḥ.

6. And water was collected from those rivers flowing eastward, flowing northward, and flowing transversely. Indeed, water was also brought from all the oceans.
क्षौद्रं दधि घृतं लाजा दर्भाः सुमनसः पयः ।
सलाजाः क्षीरिभिश्छन्ना घटाः काञ्चनराजताः ।
पद्मोत्पलयुता भान्ति पूर्णाः परमवारिणा ॥७॥
7. kṣaudraṃ dadhi ghṛtaṃ lājā darbhāḥ sumanasaḥ payaḥ ,
salājāḥ kṣīribhiśchannā ghaṭāḥ kāñcanarājatāḥ ,
padmotpalayutā bhānti pūrṇāḥ paramavāriṇā.
7. kṣaudram dadhi ghṛtam lājāḥ darbhāḥ
sumanasaḥ payaḥ sa-lājāḥ kṣīribhiḥ
channāḥ ghaṭāḥ kāñcana-rājatāḥ padma-utpala-yutāḥ
bhānti pūrṇāḥ parama-vāriṇā
7. kṣaudram dadhi ghṛtam lājāḥ darbhāḥ
sumanasaḥ payaḥ kāñcana-rājatāḥ sa-lājāḥ
kṣīribhiḥ channāḥ padma-utpala-yutāḥ
parama-vāriṇā pūrṇāḥ ghaṭāḥ bhānti
7. Honey, curds, ghee, parched rice, Darbha grass, flowers, and milk are arranged. Gold and silver jars, covered with branches of milk-exuding trees, adorned with parched rice, and containing lotuses and water lilies, shine brightly, filled with excellent water.
चन्द्रांशुविकचप्रख्यं पाण्डुरं रत्नभूषितम् ।
सज्जं तिष्ठति रामस्य वालव्यजनमुत्तमम् ॥८॥
8. candrāṃśuvikacaprakhyaṃ pāṇḍuraṃ ratnabhūṣitam ,
sajjaṃ tiṣṭhati rāmasya vālavyajanamuttamam.
8. candra-aṃśu-vikaca-prakhyam pāṇḍuram ratna-bhūṣitam
sajjjam tiṣṭhati rāmasya vāla-vyajanam uttamam
8. rāmasya uttamam pāṇḍuram ratna-bhūṣitam

8. Rama's excellent fly-whisk (vālavyaajana), white, adorned with jewels, and shining like the expanded rays of the moon, stands prepared.
चन्द्रमण्डलसंकाशमातपत्रं च पाण्डुरम् ।
सज्जं द्युतिकरं श्रीमदभिषेकपुरस्कृतम् ॥९॥
9. candramaṇḍalasaṃkāśamātapatraṃ ca pāṇḍuram ,
sajjaṃ dyutikaraṃ śrīmadabhiṣekapuraskṛtam.
9. candra-maṇḍala-saṃkāśam ātapatram ca pāṇḍuram
sajjjam dyuti-karam śrīmat abhiṣeka-puraskṛtam
9. ca pāṇḍuram candra-maṇḍala-saṃkāśam sajjjam
dyuti-karam śrīmat abhiṣeka-puraskṛtam ātapatram
9. And a white parasol (ātapatra), shining brightly and glorious, resembling the orb of the moon, stands prepared and placed in front for the anointing (abhiṣeka).
पाण्डुरश्च वृषः सज्जः पाण्डुराश्वश्च सुस्थितः ।
प्रस्रुतश्च गजः श्रीमानौपवाह्यः प्रतीक्षते ॥१०॥
10. pāṇḍuraśca vṛṣaḥ sajjaḥ pāṇḍurāśvaśca susthitaḥ ,
prasrutaśca gajaḥ śrīmānaupavāhyaḥ pratīkṣate.
10. pāṇḍuraḥ ca vṛṣaḥ sajjaḥ pāṇḍura-aśvaḥ ca su-sthitaḥ
prasrutaḥ ca gajaḥ śrīmān aupavāhyaḥ pratīkṣate
10. pāṇḍuraḥ vṛṣaḥ sajjaḥ ca pāṇḍura-aśvaḥ su-sthitaḥ
ca prasrutaḥ ca śrīmān aupavāhyaḥ gajaḥ pratīkṣate
10. A white bull stands ready, and a well-positioned white horse is also prepared. And a majestic elephant, oozing ichor and serving as a ceremonial mount, awaits.
अष्टौ कन्याश्च मङ्गल्याः सर्वाभरणभूषिताः ।
वादित्राणि च सर्वाणि बन्दिनश्च तथापरे ॥११॥
11. aṣṭau kanyāśca maṅgalyāḥ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ ,
vāditrāṇi ca sarvāṇi bandinaśca tathāpare.
11. aṣṭau kanyāḥ ca maṅgalyāḥ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ
vāditrāṇi ca sarvāṇi bandinaḥ ca tathā apare

11. Eight auspicious maidens, adorned with all ornaments, and all musical instruments, and similarly other panegyrists.
इक्ष्वाकूणां यथा राज्ये संभ्रियेताभिषेचनम् ।
तथा जातीयामादाय राजपुत्राभिषेचनम् ॥१२॥
12. ikṣvākūṇāṃ yathā rājye saṃbhriyetābhiṣecanam ,
tathā jātīyāmādāya rājaputrābhiṣecanam.
12. ikṣvākuṇām yathā rājye saṃbhriyeta abhiṣecanam
tathā jātīyām ādāya rājaputra abhiṣecanam
12. yathā ikṣvākuṇām rājye abhiṣecanam saṃbhriyeta,

12. Just as the anointing (abhiṣecana) ceremony is traditionally arranged in the kingdom for the Ikshvakus, so too, having collected the necessary preparations of that kind, the anointing (abhiṣecana) of the prince (should be performed).
ते राजवचनात्तत्र समवेता महीपतिम् ।
अपश्यन्तो ऽब्रुवन् को नु राज्ञो नः प्रतिवेदयेत् ॥१३॥
13. te rājavacanāttatra samavetā mahīpatim ,
apaśyanto'bruvan ko nu rājño naḥ prativedayet.

apaśyantaḥ abruvan kaḥ nu rājñaḥ naḥ prativedayet
13. te rājavacanāt tatra samavetāḥ mahīpatim apaśyantaḥ abruvan,

13. They, having assembled there by the king's command, not seeing the king, said, "Who indeed would inform the king about us?"
न पश्यामश्च राजानमुदितश्च दिवाकरः ।
यौवराज्याभिषेकश्च सज्जो रामस्य धीमतः ॥१४॥
14. na paśyāmaśca rājānamuditaśca divākaraḥ ,
yauvarājyābhiṣekaśca sajjo rāmasya dhīmataḥ.
14. na paśyāmaḥ ca rājānam uditaḥ ca divākaraḥ
yauvarājyābhiṣekaḥ ca sajjaḥ rāmasya dhīmataḥ
14. ca vayam rājānam na paśyāmaḥ ca divākaraḥ uditaḥ
ca dhīmataḥ rāmasya yauvarājyābhiṣekaḥ sajjaḥ
14. And we do not see the king; and the sun has risen. And the consecration (abhiṣecana) of the wise Rama as crown prince is ready.
इति तेषु ब्रुवाणेषु सार्वभौमान्महीपतीन् ।
अब्रवीत्तानिदं सर्वान् सुमन्त्रो राजसत्कृतः ॥१५॥
15. iti teṣu bruvāṇeṣu sārvabhaumānmahīpatīn ,
abravīttānidaṃ sarvān sumantro rājasatkṛtaḥ.
15. iti teṣu bruvāṇeṣu sārvabhaumān mahīpatīn
abravīt tān idam sarvān sumantraḥ rājasat-kṛtaḥ
15. teṣu sārvabhaumān mahīpatīn iti bruvāṇeṣu,

15. As those universal sovereigns (mahīpati) were speaking thus, Sumantra, who was honored by the king, said this to all of them.
अयं पृच्छामि वचनात् सुखमायुष्मतामहम् ।
राज्ञः संप्रतिबुद्धस्य यच्चागमनकारणम् ॥१६॥
16. ayaṃ pṛcchāmi vacanāt sukhamāyuṣmatāmaham ,
rājñaḥ saṃpratibuddhasya yaccāgamanakāraṇam.
16. ayam pṛcchāmi vacanāt sukham āyuṣmatām aham
rājñaḥ saṃpratibuddhasya yat ca āgamanakāraṇam
16. ayam aham vacanāt āyuṣmatām sukham pṛcchāmi,
ca yat saṃpratibuddhasya rājñaḥ āgamanakāraṇam (asti)
16. By the king's command (vacanāt), I inquire about the well-being of you long-lived ones. And also, what is the reason for the arrival of the recently awakened king?
इत्युक्त्वान्तःपुरद्वारमाजगाम पुराणवित् ।
आशीर्भिर्गुणयुक्ताभिरभितुष्टाव राघवम् ॥१७॥
17. ityuktvāntaḥpuradvāramājagāma purāṇavit ,
āśīrbhirguṇayuktābhirabhituṣṭāva rāghavam.
17. iti uktvā antaḥpuradvāram ājagāma purāṇavit
āśīrbhiḥ guṇayuktābhiḥ abhitustāva rāghavam
17. purāṇavit iti uktvā antaḥpuradvāram ājagāma.
(saḥ) guṇayuktābhiḥ āśīrbhiḥ rāghavam abhitustāva
17. Having spoken thus, the knower of ancient lore (purāṇavit) approached the door of the inner chambers. He then praised Rāghava with auspicious blessings full of good qualities.
गता भगवती रात्रिरहः शिवमुपस्थितम् ।
बुध्यस्व नृपशार्दूल कुरु कार्यमनन्तरम् ॥१८॥
18. gatā bhagavatī rātrirahaḥ śivamupasthitam ,
budhyasva nṛpaśārdūla kuru kāryamanantaram.
18. gatā bhagavatī rātriḥ ahaḥ śivam upasthitam
budhyasva nṛpaśārdūla kuru kāryam anantaram
18. bhagavatī rātriḥ gatā.
śivam ahaḥ upasthitam (asti).

18. The blessed night has passed, and an auspicious day has arrived. O tiger among kings (nṛpaśārdūla), awaken and attend to your immediate duties.
ब्राह्मणा बलमुख्याश्च नैगमाश्चागता नृप ।
दर्शनं प्रतिकाङ्क्षन्ते प्रतिबुध्यस्व राघव ॥१९॥
19. brāhmaṇā balamukhyāśca naigamāścāgatā nṛpa ,
darśanaṃ pratikāṅkṣante pratibudhyasva rāghava.

darśanam pratikāṅkṣante pratibudhyasva rāghava

19. O King (nṛpa), O Raghava, Brahmins, chief warriors, and merchants have arrived and are awaiting your audience. Awaken!
स्तुवन्तं तं तदा सूतं सुमन्त्रं मन्त्रकोविदम् ।
प्रतिबुध्य ततो राजा इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२०॥
20. stuvantaṃ taṃ tadā sūtaṃ sumantraṃ mantrakovidam ,
pratibudhya tato rājā idaṃ vacanamabravīt.
20. stuvantam tam tadā sūtam sumantram mantrakovidam
pratibudhya tataḥ rājā idam vacanam abravīt
20. tataḥ rājā pratibudhya stuvantam tam sumantram

20. Having awakened, the king then spoke these words to that charioteer Sumantra, who was praising him and was skilled in counsel (mantra).
न चैव संप्रसुतो ऽहमानयेदाशु राघवम् ।
इति राजा दशरथः सूतं तत्रान्वशात् पुनः ॥२१॥
21. na caiva saṃprasuto'hamānayedāśu rāghavam ,
iti rājā daśarathaḥ sūtaṃ tatrānvaśāt punaḥ.
21. na ca eva saṃprasuptaḥ aham ānayet āśu rāghavam
iti rājā daśarathaḥ sūtam tatra anvaśāt punaḥ
21. aham na ca eva saṃprasuptaḥ rāghavam āśu ānayet
iti rājā daśarathaḥ tatra sūtam punaḥ anvaśāt
21. "I was not deeply asleep; bring Rāghava (Rama) quickly!" Thus, King Daśaratha again instructed the charioteer there.
स राजवचनं श्रुत्वा शिरसा प्रतिपूज्य तम् ।
निर्जगाम नृपावासान्मन्यमानः प्रियं महत् ॥२२॥
22. sa rājavacanaṃ śrutvā śirasā pratipūjya tam ,
nirjagāma nṛpāvāsānmanyamānaḥ priyaṃ mahat.
22. saḥ rājavacanam śrutvā śirasā pratipūjya tam
nirjagāma nṛpāvāsāt manyamānaḥ priyam mahat

22. Having heard the king's command and honored him by bowing his head, he departed from the royal dwelling, considering it a great favor.
प्रपन्नो राजमार्गं च पताका ध्वजशोभितम् ।
स सूतस्तत्र शुश्राव रामाधिकरणाः कथाः ॥२३॥
23. prapanno rājamārgaṃ ca patākā dhvajaśobhitam ,
sa sūtastatra śuśrāva rāmādhikaraṇāḥ kathāḥ.
23. prapannaḥ rājamārgam ca patākā dhvajaśobhitam
saḥ sūtaḥ tatra śuśrāva rāmādhikaraṇāḥ kathāḥ
23. saḥ sūtaḥ patākā dhvajaśobhitam rājamārgam

23. The charioteer, having entered the royal road, which was adorned with banners and flags, heard stories there concerning Rama.
ततो ददर्श रुचिरं कैलाससदृशप्रभम् ।
रामवेश्म सुमन्त्रस्तु शक्रवेश्मसमप्रभम् ॥२४॥
24. tato dadarśa ruciraṃ kailāsasadṛśaprabham ,
rāmaveśma sumantrastu śakraveśmasamaprabham.
24. tataḥ dadarśa ruchiram kailāsasadṛśaprabham
rāmavesma sumantraḥ tu śakravesmasamaprabham
24. tataḥ sumantraḥ tu ruchiram kailāsasadṛśaprabham

24. Then Sumantra saw Rama's beautiful dwelling, which was radiant like Mount Kailasa and shone with a brilliance equal to Indra's abode.
महाकपाटपिहितं वितर्दिशतशोभितम् ।
काञ्चनप्रतिमैकाग्रं मणिविद्रुमतोरणम् ॥२५॥
25. mahākapāṭapihitaṃ vitardiśataśobhitam ,
kāñcanapratimaikāgraṃ maṇividrumatoraṇam.

25. It was concealed by grand doors, embellished with hundreds of balconies, featuring prominent golden statues at its forefront, and adorned with arches of gems and coral.
शारदाभ्रघनप्रख्यं दीप्तं मेरुगुहोपमम् ।
दामभिर्वरमाल्यानां सुमहद्भिरलंकृतम् ॥२६॥
26. śāradābhraghanaprakhyaṃ dīptaṃ meruguhopamam ,
dāmabhirvaramālyānāṃ sumahadbhiralaṃkṛtam.

dāmabhiḥ varamālyānām sumahadbhiḥ alaṅkṛtam

26. It was radiant like dense autumnal clouds, splendid, resembling a cave on Mount Meru, and adorned with very large garlands of excellent flowers.
स वाजियुक्तेन रथेन सारथिर्नराकुलं राजकुलं विलोकयन् ।
ततः समासाद्य महाधनं महत् प्रहृष्टरोमा स बभूव सारथिः ॥२७॥
27. sa vājiyuktena rathena sārathirnarākulaṃ rājakulaṃ vilokayan ,
tataḥ samāsādya mahādhanaṃ mahat prahṛṣṭaromā sa babhūva sārathiḥ.
27. saḥ vāji-yuktena rathena sārathiḥ
nara-ākulam rāja-kulam vilokayan
tataḥ samāsādya mahā-dhanam mahat
prahṛṣṭa-romā saḥ babhūva sārathiḥ
27. saḥ sārathiḥ vāji-yuktena rathena
nara-ākulam rāja-kulam vilokayan
tataḥ mahā-dhanam mahat samāsādya
saḥ sārathiḥ prahṛṣṭa-romā babhūva
27. The charioteer, in his horse-drawn chariot, observed the royal palace bustling with people. As he then approached that magnificent and richly endowed palace, his hair stood on end with excitement.
तदद्रिकूटाचलमेघसंनिभं महाविमानोत्तमवेश्मसंघवत् ।
अवार्यमाणः प्रविवेश सारथिः प्रभूतरत्नं मकरो यथार्णवम् ॥२८॥
28. tadadrikūṭācalameghasaṃnibhaṃ mahāvimānottamaveśmasaṃghavat ,
avāryamāṇaḥ praviveśa sārathiḥ prabhūtaratnaṃ makaro yathārṇavam.
28. tat adri-kūṭa-acala-megha-saṃnibham
mahā-vimāna-uttama-veśma-saṅghavat
avāryamāṇaḥ praviveśa sārathiḥ
prabhūta-ratnam makaraḥ yathā arṇavam
28. avāryamāṇaḥ sārathiḥ tat adri-kūṭa-acala-megha-saṃnibham mahā-vimāna-uttama-veśma-saṅghavat praviveśa,
yathā makaraḥ prabhūta-ratnam arṇavam
28. The charioteer, unhindered, entered that palace, which was as imposing as a mountain peak, an immovable mountain, or a cloud, and which contained many excellent mansions, just as a sea-monster enters an ocean abundant with jewels.
